You're always welcome to join at six at six to eight. That's going. Wow, there's another one. Rooted. Rooted is a grow deeply rooted in faith. That's meeting right here inside of this room, Wednesdays ten to twelve. They had like a 100 and something people here show up. It's fantastic, a lot of fun, and great to be together. This one, we've been advertising this for since April years. They've been advertising it to us for two years. No joke. They called in 2020 and started forecasting this tour with Will Graham. He's coming to do a big Billy Graham style rally over in Idaho Falls. It is September twenty third and twenty fourth at the Mountain America Center. It's going to be great. Twenty third is kids and teens. The twenty fourth is the big rally for everybody. So take somebody with you and go to see Will Graham. Look up to her. That is happening. Some of you all have trained to be counselors to receive people and talk to people afterwards. Discovery class will be September 24 between services. It's been a while since we've done one of these officially, although it happens all the time. We've we're doing one between services, September 24 in my office in there. That'll be fun. Discovery class. If you want to know more about the church or being a member of the church or just have questions about it, typically, Sunday mornings, I'm up here talking and y'all are out there sitting But we do want to interface a little better than that. So youth group. This is middle school Sunday, three to five. High school Thursday, 06:30 to eight. That's going to be at the TMC, the Tribe Ministry Center off Broadway near the Far Bureau office. Sundays for are sure. That's right. Sundays are here at three to five. That's cool. Connect hour Monday night kitchen. Monday nights, we're still going to be trying to make food for Awana. So we'd still do need volunteers that would sign up and help out with that. And connect hours, the time between services, it'd be great if we had somebody that would join in. And if there's anything else, you can sign up for the weekly emails. I'm sure there's more stuff. Did I see a hand? Did I see anybody? Objections, deletions, additions, suggestions? No. Okay. Alright. Can we get back to worshiping the Lord together then? Would you stand up? Taste and see. Oh, Lord, that is really our desire this morning that collect together, collectively, that our praises would rise to you like incense, like a sweet smelling incense to you. God, that you would be glorified and that we would taste and see truly that you are good. Amen. Lord, we've made that our song, but may that be our our prayer too, Lord. Would you lead us in your love, your self giving, others focused love? It's a different kind of it's a different kind of love than than than we really experience from day to day here. It's would you help us, Lord? Give us that your kind of love that we would walk in your spirit and and and truly love the people around us that it would point to you. In Jesus' name. Amen. Amen. You you can have a seat here for just a moment. And this is the the worship through giving part of the service and invite the ushers to come on forward, and we get to sing again. My God, my king from Psalm 95. It's come let us sing. Sing to the Lord just as we have been. Let's come to him with thanksgiving because we are thankful and sing psalms of praise to him. And before we do, Ray, would you pray? Lord God almighty, I'm thankful to be here worshiping in this group this morning. But I'm thankful that there are people all over the world, Lord, that are gathered in little groups and worship in your name. In Jesus' name. Lord, we gather. We're thankful to be a part of the family. As we are sitting here this morning, Lord, and thinking how interconnected the whole I am thinking how interconnected the whole world is. How every story touches on every other story. Lord, I thank you that you have made us a part of plan A and that there is no plan B for reaching the world. It's a daunting task in human terms. It is inestimate. Lord, I pray that we would know that it is not merely human task, that we'd be filled with your spirit, that it would overflow out of us to the community around us. I thank you for the blessing this morning of being here and seeing faces that I haven't seen in a long time. Other members of the family of God. God, would you keep on adding to that family? May everything that we do, all the words that we say and all of the actions that we do Be a part. May it just join into that. In Jesus' name, we ask you that we would be a part of doing your will and your way this morning. Would you take everything that's placed in these plates physically, financially, but also everything metaphorical to that people put in to these plates, Lord. And would you use it, amplify it for our good and your glory. In Jesus' name, amen. Thank you. So I was out of the pulpit last week. Thank you to Brad for filling in again. Great job. I enjoyed the sermon myself. We were at a college retreat in North Georgia. And this group has been they've been out here one time. We've been there one other time. And it was just great to be back together again. Preston, are the slides going to come up at some point or maybe I'll just invite him back up. Okay. There we go. All right. So two weeks ago, we covered just six verses from Luke. I'm reminding you of that because we finished ten minutes early. Okay? Remember that. This is the one. Two men went up into the temple to pray, one a Pharisee and the other a tax collector. This has been pursuing me for the last few weeks. The Pharisees stood and began praying. Most religious folks, we tend to paint them as bad guys, but one of the most religious folks stood up and felt like he didn't really need anything from God. And I mentioned there that I thought that this was at the temple service where they slaughter the animals, where they sacrifice the animals. Thank you that I'm not like other people. Right? That guy. I fast twice a week. I pay tithes of all I get. But the tax collector standing at some distance away was even unwilling to raise his right eyes to heaven and he was saying, God, be merciful to me, the sinner. This guy has been pursuing me for the last few weeks. Right? And as I was thinking about it, I was thinking none of us deserve the grace that God has given. It wouldn't be grace if it was deserved. This is not based on merit. And and Jesus says, I tell you this man went to his house justified. God called him righteous. Though he was not righteous, God justified this one because he was humble. Because he recognized his need. For everyone who exalts himself will be humbled and the one who humbles himself will be exalted. So you all are used to me going to the very next passage. I'm not going to do that this week. But because this guy has been pursuing me, I've been thinking about a few things. So this is going be slightly out of chronological order by eighty five years or so. And it's going be a ton of scripture all at once. This is what I plan to do. I'm going to jettison that plan. We're going to shorten it to about six verses, but I have a story before I start. So yeah, I said really. But it's not really now. Consider this all an extended communion experience. We're getting together right here towards the end of this service. The region. So I went, Tanya went, and Pascal went, and another friend, the leader of this college house group, Mike, all went to Morocco in 2009, think. Not sure. Somewhere around there. And we went to a place that had a big earthquake yesterday. Huge, huge earthquake. And I didn't read about it yesterday. I was busy all day long. But I woke up this morning and read a bit about it in the paper. And the epicenter of this earthquake is a couple of miles. It's in the mountains. And what we did while we were there was hike in the High Atlas Mountains. If you know me, you know I'm not a hiker. Pascal rode a mule most of the way, but we hiked an extended hike. It was not a short hike. Mostly roads, but we walked around and most of the houses I've seen that we walked past are rubble. They're just destroyed. I want to tell a story about going in there. So that was the second year. When Tanya and Pascal and Mike went, we went with another buddy. And I had been exactly a year before with that same buddy and another guy. Weird story there. He has hair down about right here and wears Oakley sunglasses like that. And I look like I look, big. And that's big, big in Morocco, really big. And the other guy just by, I don't know, providence of God maybe, looks like the king of Morocco. He's a dead ringer. He could be a body double. He does not wear a red fez, but he's looks like the king of Morocco. And we hiked around and we met a guy named Jamal. So as we're there, that's great. We had a hike. We came back the next year, had a hike. I want to tell you, before going on the very first time, the long haired guy and I were in class together. And we looked over and there's another fella named Daniel. And Daniel says, I heard you're going to Morocco. We're like, yeah, man. He goes, where are you going? He said, some little town you've never heard of. He goes, hit me. I said, Really? No. It's a little town outside of Marrakech. He goes, Tell me again, where is that specific town? And we said, We're going to Amazmish. Amazmish. It's in Tashal Heit Berber territory in Morocco outside of Marrakech. And he says, I lived there for six months. Come to my house. And we went to his house and he made a tagine and we learned how to lay down on the floor to eat and all the stuff that you do, a few polite phrases and whatnot. And then he said, if you're going over there, I want you to take these letters for me. And so I'm going to write just a couple letters. So we went, you know, got the letters, put them in the backpack, and we're going. First night we get into town, we get in the airport, we see a car wreck half a mile from the airport. It was a very interesting experience, nothing like I'd ever seen here. And then before ten minutes in town, someone had placed a snake around my neck because that's what they do in the tourist bazaar. It doesn't cost anything to get to put a snake around your neck, but it does cost to get them off of your neck. It's a Muslim blessing. You can pay for the blessing. I said, you know, I've been around snakes my whole life. I'm from Georgia. And either you get that snake off me for free or I'm going to kill it. So the next thing, a guy throws me a monkey. And what are you gonna do when somebody throws a monkey at you? Can't just stand there and let it bounce off. Caught the monkey. Threw it right back. We're barely in town and we're only spending one night there before we go to Amishmij. We arrange for transportation at the Riyadh, the hotel. And when we get transportation, they send a guy in an old beat up Mercedes to pick us up, and we take off for Amish. And we've got the backpacks and whatever we need for the trip. And on our way there, our taxi driver recognizes like I have on a wedding ring, and he recognized a few signs that we might not be Muslim. We might be Christians from outside, so he starts asking questions. And he starts defending Islam. We didn't start it. He started it. But he gave all the defenses and all the apologetic stuff. Our whole ride there is 45 miles or so through the mountains, it took a while to get there. And so he kind of set his peace and have fun. We got out. We meet up with Jamal. And when we met Jamal, he said, come on in here. He took us into the soup, the market. It was market day. And he sat us down in a little dark room. We sat down and laid down, started eating. And he said, do you have any I don't know what exactly prompted it. We said, have letters for you. Turns out that our guide was one of the people that Daniel knew, which that's great. So we knew that was happening because he knew it was Jamal. There are not many workers, laborers, locals especially in the area. And so he said take this to Jamal. Well, the other letter was for his wife. The other letter was for our taxi driver. He didn't arrange that. That's pretty amazing. Like of all the taxis in Marrakesh, all the taxis going that direction in Marrakesh, it's got to be a small number. That guy. And so, okay, that's pretty cool. He says, I'll give it I'll give it to him. When I leave you on your hike today, I'll I'll track him down and give it to him. And so we hiked for four or five days, and we stayed with people. If you go into my office and you see an older man playing marbles with his kid, that's in Amish or above Amish on the hike. If you see the one below it where Pascal is standing there with four or five other little kids, she's the little blonde one, right? That family put us up for the night. And so we did that kind of trip one year and then Tanya Pascal and I went back with Mike the next year. Well, at the end of the week, the first year, our taxi driver, I'll call him Abdele. His name was Abdele. So that's what we're gonna call him, not Bill. And so he comes in, and he has upped his game with apologetics stuff. And he starts asking, and he says, oh, the Bible is corrupt. And three of us have been studying Greek the whole time we've been in seminary. We said, you wanna go back? How far do you wanna go back? That sort of thing. And he says, okay. And and we keep going for an extended breakfast. He was there to pick us up, sat down on a little plastic table. And he, after a while, looked angry. I don't know exactly what it was, but he pounds fist on the table. Everything jumps and he says, we pray. Oh my goodness. What does this mean? He said, we stand hip to hip. We get as close as we can so that the djinn, the demons can't come between us. So we stood four men, hip to hip. That's pretty close. And Abdel said, I'm going to pray in classical Arabic because that's what God listens to. He's been speaking English the whole time. I speak English. My long haired friend speaks English. The other guy is Japanese Brazilian. He said, I'm going to speak classical Arabic. You can go in English, whatever. And don't know what you speak, Japanese, Brazilian. Whatever y'all wanna do, but God will hear our prayers. What we're praying is that he would reveal to us the truth. And no matter what he tells us, even if it means an extreme change of life, we will do it. Are you committed? Hip to hip, standing face to face. Are you committed to this? And we all said yes, and he said yes, and he started off of praying, and we started off of praying. And that was a weird experience in some ways, but it was a very, very intense experience. And not always do you get the chance to go back, right? But we went back one year later and very intentionally, Jamal set up for him to be our cab driver because he had made an extreme change of life, right? Yeah. And he lives today for Jesus. It's pretty awesome. I'm gonna skip to slide 49. I'm not joking. That's the story. We're going to experience communion today. And this is for all peoples who have ever who have ever trusted in Jesus. Right? It's an open table. I don't care your denominational background. I don't care if you're Catholic. I don't care. If you've trusted in Jesus, this is an open table. This is for you. And I do want to go to slide 49 seriously. There we go. I had the first part in an LT because it's such easy reading and if you want to go back this afternoon and get what this therefore is there for. That's fine. I think the story stands for it too though. So the therefore, after that story, after the truth of the gospel, after the truth that Jesus is better than the prophets in Hebrews. Right? He's better than angels. He's better than Moses. He's better than the priesthood. He's better than the old covenant. He is initiating, inaugurating the new covenant. And this is a symbol of the new covenant in his blood. So Hebrews ten nineteen to 21, and I'll tell you one more thing that I had planned for this morning. I went back. I was teaching on this pre COVID. Right? We had been preaching through Hebrews, I think, since a long time before COVID. We were up at Hebrews 13 when we got there, and I thought, I'm I think I'm gonna preach this, the message right before COVID. And the more I delved into it, I thought, nope. That might still be divisive, and I don't wanna do that. I don't wanna do anything to tear apart the body of Christ. I wanna do everything I can to unify it. I don't care your background. Jesus is calling us out of and into. Right? He's calling us out of our own culture or subculture and affiliation. He's calling us into the body of Christ and he's asking us to partake together. Therefore, brothers and sisters, since we have confidence to enter into the holy place by the blood of Jesus. Now, earlier it talks about all of the old covenant ritual of the priest going in. But he's saying that through Jesus' sacrifice once and for all, we have confidence to enter into that holy place ourselves. Nothing separating us from God. Jesus has been the mediator and bridge. Since we have confidence to enter the holy place by the blood of Jesus, by a new and living way, that which he inaugurated for us through the veil. That is his flesh. He was the ultimate sacrifice. What made me think of this one so much this week is that guy's pursuing me. The fellow who's saying there's no way that those that the blood of those bulls and goats, that the blood of those pigeons, that the blood of those little animals is covering me, the tax collector. Right? He's never it's it's it's not sufficient and I know it. But he's still justified by his humility, Jesus said. By a new and living way which he inaugurated for us through the veil. That is his flesh. Jesus lived a perfect life in complete submission to the spirit of his father God. And he walked it out perfectly. Had a perfect record. And therefore, he could be the ultimate sacrifice. Therefore, brothers and sisters, since we have confidence entered into the holy place by the blood of Jesus, by new and living way which he, Jesus, inaugurated for us through the veil. That is his flesh. And since we have a great high priest over the house of God. That's Jesus. The rationale and the call to action. And then we're gonna get exhortations. Three exhortations. Alright. So the rationale is because all of this is true, lettuce. Oh come on. Know I was going to get a few groans. Lettuce. Let us. It is an exhortation. There are three of them. Let us Sorry. Actually, this is fairly common in Hebrews. It is a it's a second person plural command. It's let all of us. It's a command for me and for you. So Hebrews four says, therefore, let us fear while a promise remains for entering Israel. Of you may seem to have come short of it. Let us be careful about that. Make sure you've dealt with God. Therefore, let us be diligent to enter into that rest which has been offered a free gift. Let us accept it. To be diligent, enter that rest so that no one will fall through following the sample example same example of disobedience. Four fourteen says, since we have a great high priest it's not the first time in chapter 10 when he calls him the great high priest. Therefore, since we have a great high priest who has passed through the heavens, Jesus, the son of God, let us hold fast our confession. For we do not have a high priest who cannot sympathize with our weaknesses. He knows what it's like to be tempted and tried. But one who has been tempted in all things just as we are, yet he's without sin. So therefore, us draw near with confidence to the throne of grace so that we may receive mercy and find grace to help in the time of need. Six one, let us press on to maturity. It's not just salvation but also sanctification. Leaving the elementary things about Christ, let's press on to maturity, not laying again the foundation of repentance from dead works and of faith toward God. Let us let us draw near. Oh, let us draw near with a sincere heart in full assurance of the faith. Lord God, forgive us for what we make it. And may we draw near with sincere hearts in full assurance of the faith, the actual gospel, not anything else that we've added to it. Forgive us for adding to it. Having our hearts sprinkled clean from an evil conscience, the blood of Jesus is sufficient. And our bodies washed with pure water. I do think that's a reference to baptism. Let us hold fast. Let us hold fast the confession of our hope. Our hope is in you, Lord. Our hope is in you. There's nothing that we've done. Lord, be merciful on me, the sinner. Let us hold fast the confession of our hope without wavering. Don't ever let anybody talk you into anything else. Jesus' blood is sufficient. His life was a sufficient sacrifice. So why? For he who promised is faithful. God is not lying. He can be trusted, and he has told you this is the way. And you've said, I'll take that way. And let us. Let us consider what? How to stimulate one another to love and good deeds. There is action that takes place when you've accepted the love of God, when you've accepted the mercy of God, when you've accepted the forgiveness of God. Like the old song says, there are lots of old songs that say this. Let's skip the song. If you get a taste of that, you want to spread it. You want to spread his love to everyone. You want to pass it on. That's the cheesy, cheesy, cheesy thing from my youth, right? Pass it on. You spread his love to everyone. You want to pass it on. Let us consider how to stimulate one another to love and good deeds. Let us consider one another in order to stir up love and good works. That's the New King James. It's only used twice in the New Testament. This is an interesting one for me. Maybe not for you, but used twice in the New Testament. It means stimulation, provocation or even irritation. Let's consider how to irritate one another towards good works. Stimulate, provoke, stir up. It is it's it's something that's like, let's get this going. Let's encourage one another. Let's get it going. Let's make it happen. If you feel led that God is leading you to do something and it's a ministry you're already doing, tell us about it and we want to help. Right? Stimulation, provocation, irritation. If you feel because of some irritation even about what's going on, we're here to listen. Really. But I think mainly it means stimulation stirring up. Let us consider how to stimulate one another loving good deeds. The other place where it's used is as angry dispute. Isn't that fun? Acts. This is pre COVID, I said. Yeah. Angry dispute. I have seen so many. After some days, Paul said to Barnabas, let us return and visit the brethren in every city in which we proclaim the word of the Lord and see how they are. I want to go back on another missionary journey and just check-in on the churches. Going back that second year was fantastic. Was really, really first year was amazing. Barnabas wanted to take John called Mark along with him also, but Paul kept insisting they should not take him along because he had deserted them in Pamphylia and had not gone with them to the work. And there occurred such a there's the word, a sharp disagreement that they separated from one another. And Barnabas took Mark with him and sailed away to Cyprus. Words can be used positively or negatively. This example to stir up is not a sharp disagreement where you just go start something else. Okay? It's a call to stir one another into love and good works. Go with a blessing and do what God has called you to do. Not forsaking our own assembling together as is the habit of some, but encouraging one another. Encouraging one another and all the more as you see the day, the great mighty day of the Lord drawing near. The closer we get, we're one day closer today than we were yesterday. And there's still a lot of people who've not heard the news of the gospel. And so we should be leaning into finishing this task. Right? Encouraging one another all the more as you see the day approaching. Three lettuces. Let us draw near with a sincere heart. This morning, like I said, if you right now are thinking I hadn't taken communion in years because I'm holding on to something against somebody and you know what it is, I say, let it go. Just let it go. Be sincere about it. I can't give this up is a really bad deal. Okay? Unforgiveness is a poison pill that kills you, not the person you're upset with. Let us draw near with a sincere heart. You can come to this table knowing that you're forgiven. Let us hold fast the confession unswervingly. We believe that Jesus is the sufficient sacrifice and where I can only be classified as a sinner. I can be saved by his grace. Let us consider how to stimulate one another to love and good deeds. It's not just here together, me, my four, and no more, just our families. It is going out into the world, lovingly and acting. This one I heard quoted a lot during COVID. This one came. What about this? This is a tertiary point beyond the lettuces. Right? It's down the list. It is in there. It is in there. And getting together however you can get together is wonderful. So that is beyond or behind these three. It's actually behind that third one right there. Consider how you might stir up love and good works in all circumstances. Let us draw near. I'm going ask the ushers to come forward. And Lisa, would you play something pretty? Where is Lisa? There she is. Thank you. Not forsaken our own we're here together. We're going to celebrate communion together. And I pray it will be as encouraging for you as it is for me. For me this morning, I've been thinking about the great communion when we are all gathered together in heaven. It will be great to sit across the table from Abel again, knowing that we are part of the communion of saints. Lord God, we ask your blessing on this bread as we allow it to pass by. As we pass it out, as we distribute it, Lord, I pray that you would bless, each one who would partake. If there's someone here who just doesn't know you, is not at this point, trusting in you, and it needs to pass by, Lord, I pray that the the life and the words of the people in this room might make a difference to them, that they might be persuaded. Would you work on their hearts, Lord, and would you work on ours? In Jesus' name, Lord, we ask your blessing on this bread as we distribute it. Amen. I've got one more little explanatory note. We have a few cups in here that are cups with the tops on them. It's gluten free. The juice is. The top wafer is. If you're gluten free and need to be, that's for you. There was supposed to be a slide beforehand, but it didn't come up. So the the crackers are for, everybody else. Amen. On the very night that Jesus was betrayed, he took bread after supper. And after he had blessed it, he said to his disciples who were there with him, this is my body which is given for you. It's a voluntary sacrifice. My body which is given for you. Take this. Take it in. Eat of it and do it in remembrance of me. Lord Jesus, we thank you for your obedient life. We pray that you would give to us that obedient lifestyle where we see and hear from the spirit, see in your word the way we should walk circumspectly. Lord, we pray that we would willingly and humbly accept that that walk. Thank you, Lord Jesus, for doing what no one else could do. Though we may long to have someone else be transformed, Our blood is not sufficient for that, Lord. Paul's blood was not sufficient for that. Only your blood was sufficient for that. One time and forever. Lord Jesus, thank you for your shed blood. Thank you, father God, for the plan of salvation. And thank you, spirit, for drawing people still. In Jesus' name, Lord, we pray that you bless this little cup of grape juice that is representative of the blood of Christ. Amen. And in the same manner he had taken the bread, he also took the cup, probably a common cup for them. We're sharing in that common cup right now in a very individual way. He took the cup and he said to them there that this is the new covenant in my blood. What Jeremiah had talked about in Jeremiah 31, what Joel had talked about. They knew to be expected, and he inaugurated it right there that night. This is the new covenant in my blood. Take this and drink. Do it as often as you will in remembrance of me. Amen. Paul says as often as we do that, we declare the Lord's death until he comes again. There's something about what happened in the past that last into eternity future, and I would pray that y'all would be stirring one another up into love and good works. Would you stand with us? We'll sing another song. Get the band back up here. Exactly ten minutes. We believe in God, We believe in Jesus Christ. We believe in the Holy Spirit, and he's given us new life. We believe in the crucifixion. We believe that he conquered death. We believe in the resurrection. And he's coming back there. We believe. Let's sing that again. Shall we? We believe in God the father. We believe in Jesus Christ. We believe in the Holy Spirit and he's given us new life. We believe in the crucifixion. We believe that he conquered death. We believe in the resurrection, and he's coming back. Yeah. We believe. We believe. Romans twelve one says, therefore, I urge you brothers and sisters in view of God's mercy to offer your bodies as a living sacrifice, holy and pleasing to God. This is your true and proper worship. Amen.
