Taste and See That the Lord Is Good First B Jackson 2019-02-17 Automatically transcribed. Where this and the recording disagree, the recording is the record. ---- Good morning, everyone. We have had some snow. Who who's ready to go shovel some more snow? Okay. We got a place for you to go. Just, see Mike Demetrius after church. Marion shovels. Well, good morning. I just want to introduce the Eichens. You guys probably know the Eichens, but formally, we wanna say welcome to them. And, of course, they're here because Ray and Carl and Ray's family are still in Kenya this morning. I think they get home this week. Does anybody know exactly when? Twenty first, twenty second. That's towards the end of this week then. Yeah. So Scott and Pam and their family have come down from Gillette this morning, and you're saying, Gillette? Hold it. I thought they were in Colorado. Well, the Eichens, okay, they served here as associate pastor from 2006 to 2012, And so they're good friends, of this church and and their family and that's reciprocal. And, God had gifted them and called them to Colorado to go there and to work in some churches that were that needed replanting and repurposing and repotting and all of that. And really, they were there for about seven years and planted, worked in several churches with Barbie's son, Mark. And so that's kind of the history. He's been here. He helped start the first service when they were here. He helped start Monday night, and very, very gifted family. So they are now missionaries of this church, and we are supporting them to help go to Gillette, Wyoming. Actually, they're there. They moved there end of December, and they've been there a month and a half. And they are going to help to, by God's grace, revive a little old church that's sitting there empty right now in Gillette, Wyoming. So they this we are we are helping to support them. And so we ask that you pray. I wanna pray a blessing over them this morning, and he's gonna lead worship this morning. And Seth is on the drums. Reese is a little taller than we last saw him and playing the bass. And I haven't didn't hear the horn this morning, but anyway. And of course, Pam and Sadie are there, and their oldest daughter, Addie, is at University of Wyoming. So that's a little bit of the background. Let's pray for them and their blessing over the service. Lord Jesus, we are so grateful to have the icons here this morning. Thank you for your gifting to them. Thank you for the people who have come to know you because of their ministry. And Lord, we pray your blessing upon them. They're in Gillette. Lead them to the relationships and the people who need you. Lead them to networking with people there to revive that church and bring life. Lord, you are life. You are the giver of life. And, Lord, we just ask that you would work through them and, bring many people there in Gillette to you. And Lord, we pray your blessing upon this service that you would encourage us through the the songs, encourage us through your word, direct us, instruct us, we pray. In Jesus name, amen. Amen. Good to be with you guys this morning. Can we stand? We're gonna stand and we're gonna sing. Thanks for letting the the little family band come join you today. Let's lift our voices to the Lord and sing. Here we go. Let all things all things that create worship him in humbleness. Oh, him. Hallelujah. Oh, praise, praise the father, praise the son, and praise the spirit three in one. Oh, praise him. Oh, praise him. Hallelujah. Hallelujah. Praise him above the heavenly host. Praise father, Amen. Should we clap our hands for God? Tell him he's good. Amen. Here? Uh-oh. And can we just give it up for the band again? It's so good to have Scott Eichen and the crew here. Couple of announcers. We've got Monday nights tomorrow night that's coming up, and that's gonna be at 06:00 down the hall. Yeah. If you guys wanna be seated, thank you. Down the hall, 06:00 to 07:30, we have Monday nights, a meal, music, and message, and that's gonna be paired with Awana, which starts at 05:45, I believe, right here in this room. So Awana will be going on Monday nights. That's tomorrow. Also, please keep pastor Ray and Carl in your prayers as they're still in Kenya. They'll be back a little later on this week. Connect hour, I hope you guys enjoyed connect hour and for all the other announcements that we have, those are gonna be in the bulletin. So, look into that and read through for all the prayer requests. If you guys wanna stand up and greet one another, the Eichens will bring us back together with a little music. Great deal. I'm gonna greet you. Hi. I'm gonna greet you. How are your fingers? Not that bad. Great job, everybody. Great job. You can you can go back to your seat. Although, if you would maybe stay stay standing. We're gonna sing some more. And and before we sing again, let me share Psalm 100 for us. Hear these hear these words from Psalm 100. It says, shout with joy to the Lord all the earth. Worship the Lord with gladness. Come before him singing with joy. Acknowledge that the Lord is God. He made us. We are his. We are his people, the sheep of his pasture. Enter his gates with thanksgiving, go into his courts with praise, give thanks to him and praise his name. And here's why, for the Lord is good. The Lord is good. His unfailing love continues forever, and his faithfulness continues to each generation. Will you pray with me? Lord, it is our pleasure to be able to sing your praises. You're so good. You this was your word says, you're good. You provide for us. You're kind to us. You forgive. You're loving. Lord, help us worship you today because you're worthy of our worship. In Jesus name, amen. We're gonna keep singing and some you might know well, some others you may not, but let's let's make a joyful noise to him. This is a song called No One Like Our God. What is this love that won't relent, this calling out with heaven's breath? Who's reaching wide to save our souls? Only you. What is this grace that makes no sense that we could never recompense? Who gives us all a second chance? Only you, only you, Only you. And there is no one like our God. There is no one like our God. And there is no other God who can save. There is no one like our God who hung the stars upon the night and showed the sun how bright to shine, who shaped the world within his hands, only you. And who set the sky upon the hills and told the waters to be still. Who spoke before the universe? Only you, only you only you and there is no one like our God there is no one like our God there is no other god who can save. There is no one like our God. There is no one our God. There is no other God who can save. There is no one like our God. And no height or death can stand between us, no bow on earth or all creation, no life or death can separate the place power on earth or all creation, no life or death can separate us from your is no one like our God and there is no one like our God and there is no other god who can save is no one like our God and there is no one like our God. There is no other god who can save. There is no one like our God. Amen. Amen. Amen. Yeah. You can clap for God. Please do. Please do. We're gonna keep singing. Big reason we sing and we respond to God in song is Jesus. God sent his only son for us. Is that good news? That is good news. We have no hope without Jesus. But the truth is in Jesus, we have living hope. Scripture says we have a living hope in Jesus. That's also the name of the song we're gonna sing next called living hope. And I hope these words truly encourage you as we think of what of what Christ has done for us. How great the chasm that lay between us, how high the mountain I could not climb. In desperation, I turned to heaven and spoke your name into the night. Then through the darkness, your loving kindness tore through the shadows of my soul. The work is finished. The end is written. Jesus Christ, my living whole. Who could imagine so great a mercy. What heart could fathom such boundless grace? The God of ages stepped down from glory to wear my sin and bear my shame. The cross is spoken, I am forgiven. The king of kings calls me his own. A beautiful savior. I'm yours forever. Jesus Christ, my living whole. Oh, hallelujah. Praise the one who set me free. Hallelujah. Death has lost its grip on me. You have broken every chain. There's salvation in your name. Jesus Christ, my living hope. Oh, Praise the one who set me free. Hallelujah. A death has lost its grip on me. You have broken every chain. There's salvation in your name, Jesus Christ, my living hope. Then came the morning that sealed the promise. Your buried body began to breathe. Out of the silence, the roaring lion declared the grave has no claim on me. Sing that again. Then came the morning that sealed the promise. Your burying body began to breathe. Out of the silence, the roaring lion declared the grave has no claim on me. Here's why. Hallelujah. I praise the one who set me free. Hallelujah. A death has lost its grip on me. You have broken every chain. There's salvation in your name, Jesus Christ, my living hope. Hallelujah. Praise the one who set me free. Hallelujah. Death has lost its grip on me. You've broken every chain. There's salvation in your name, Jesus Christ, my living hope. Amen. Please be seated, guys. I think it is a good time now to take some time to pray. Our God is the one who says come to me. Come to me all you who are weary and carry heavy burdens and I will give you rest. First Peter five:seven we're told, give all your worries to God. Cast your anxiety upon the Lord for he cares for you. So I don't know where you're at this morning, but I know this. I know in this life there are valleys and there there are mountain tops and there's everywhere in between. But this is a place for us to to cry out to God and say, Lord, I need you. I need your help. I need your your grace. And so let's bow in prayer right now before we sing again And just take time to talk to the Lord. Wherever you're at, meet with him. And then we'll sing another song. So let's pray. He is jealous for me, Loves like a hurricane. I am a tree bending beneath the weight of his wind and mercy. When all of a sudden, I am unaware of these afflictions eclipsed by glory. And I realize just how beautiful you are and how great your affections are for me. And know how he loves us so. Oh, how he loves us. You are and how great your affections are for me. Know how he loves us. Oh, oh, how he loves us how he loves us all and he loves us and we are his portion and he is our prize drawn to redemption by the grace in his eyes. Oh, he loves us. Oh, how he loves us. Oh, how he loves. For God so loved the world that He sent His only Son, that whoever believes in Him will not perish but have eternal life. He loves us perfectly. In response to to him, to God's goodness, his love for us. An important part of our worship is our giving. God needs nothing. He owns everything. He's pleased when when we cheerfully give. God is a giver. He's given us life. He he gives us all everything we need. And so when we give, it's just us saying, Lord, I love you. Accept this for your glory. So that's the giving today. So let me pray, and then we'll take offering. Lord, Lord, what can we give? I mean, you need nothing, but we know it brings you honor when we follow you, when we're givers in the way you are a giver. So use this offering for the glory of your name. In Christ's name, amen. Will you all bow? We are about to open the word of God. How about you pray? We all pray right now just to prepare our hearts, and then I'll pray for us in just a moment. So let's bow in prayer. Lord, thank you for this beautiful day that you have made, Lord. Thank you for the the fact, the gift that you are here because two or three gather in your name, and you promise us that when two or three gather in your name, you are there. Lord, thank you for your presence. And now, God, thank you so much for your word. Lord, how could we know you without your word? You you've given us your word to to help us know who you are. You've given us your word so we can know truth and so that we can find life. Speak now, speak to us through your word, teach us. Lord, may I be out of the way, may you get all the praise, all the glory, and may you help us. Every one of us, we need your word, we need to hear from you. In Jesus' name we pray. Amen. Hey, brothers and sisters, thanks for letting us come. It's great to be back here in Jackson. You know, it's still snowy here. I mean, it's crazy. It just keeps snowing, you know, in in old Jackson. So we're in Gillette, Wyoming now, and it's snowy there not quite as much. And, we were in Colorado. We left here in 2012. And by God's grace, we've been a part of planting a church. We planted helped plant a church in Calvary Littleton, called Calvary Church Littleton. And by God's grace, now there are 18 Calvary's. God has been so kind, that we're seeing we're planting churches, there's replanting of churches. And so the short of it is is we've after six years at Calvary Littleton, we were compelled, our family, to go to Gillette, Wyoming to plant a Calvary church in Gillette, Wyoming. So it's our honor and our privilege to go there and we are so grateful for First Bee partnering with us. That's a real gift. So hey, I I wanna take a survey this morning. I'm curious, raise your hand if you have ever just heard about this place called the Grand Canyon. Raise your hand. Have you heard about it? Okay. Raise your hand if you've ever seen pictures of the Grand Canyon. Raise your hand if you've ever read something about the Grand Canyon. Okay. Now here's the key. Finally, raise your hand if you've ever actually been to the Grand Canyon. Most of us. Some maybe a few not. Maybe a few not. For many years I'd only like seen pictures, you know, read stories about the Grand Canyon. Know, mean, and I was always fascinated with it, but I'd never been there. So about two, two and a half years ago our family got to go to the Grand Canyon. I'm telling you, when you actually go to the Grand Canyon, that's much different than just you know seeing a picture of the Grand Canyon. Would you agree? Those of you who have been there, I mean when you walk up to the edge of the Grand Canyon and you look out you go, woah. I mean wow. And that was my thought. I mean we spent a lot of time being the tourists standing on the edge going holy moly. This is huge. Standing near the edge telling my kids, get away or you're going to die if you fall off the edge. Mean, but listen. And I remember thinking things there at the Grand Canyon like, this is so big and I'm like so small. And honestly, me it couldn't I couldn't help but go, God, you are glorious in what you make, God. I I share that just to make the point this morning that it's truly a different thing to just hear about something, read about something, see it's a different thing to just hear about it as opposed to actually experiencing something. That's a whole different thing. And I I wanna share with you this morning church that God has called us not just to hear about God from a distance. God has called us not to just kind of vaguely read about God and know that he might be the no, God's called us to come near to him. God's called us to personally know him and experience God. That's that's why God sent his son so that we could come near to him. God wants us to taste and see him, not just from a distance, but personally to know him and to trust him and to and put to take refuge in him. And by the way, he's much grander than the Grand Canyon, much grander. So we're going to look at this truth this morning, this concept by looking at Psalm 34. So up on the screen we'll have the reference. I would ask you to grab your Bible please or on your phone. And if you're new to the Bible, no worries. It's it's right basically in the middle of your Bible. But turn to Psalm 34. By the way, I think it's important to open this. Not just to always kind of from a no, open and let's hear. Let's go to it ourselves because God speaks in power through his word. So turn with me to Psalm 34. We're gonna read through verses one through eight. And then truly we're gonna zero in to this morning on verse eight. But let's let's read all of this. By the way, let me give you a quick context before we read this psalm. Anybody know who wrote this psalm? David. David wrote this psalm. He wrote this psalm. Let me give you a quick context. If actually, if if you ever wanna read the context, the the history, if you read first Samuel 21 verse 10 through chapter 22 verse one, it tells this historical background of what was going on. It's actually a pretty funny story. Don't even tell me the Bible's not funny. There's all kinds of crazy, funny, weird things that happen in the Bible. But to give you the context, David at this time when he wrote this psalm was being pursued by a man named Saul. Saul wanted to do what to David? He wanted to kill David. Have any of you wanted has someone wanted to kill you recently? That most of us have not experienced that. But that's a crazy thing to to know that someone wants to kill you. That's where David's at when he writes the Psalm. And so he fleed, he ran away from Saul, and he ends up with this guy named King Ashish of Goth. And he I think he David, you know, went to him at first thinking of safety. But then as he's with King Ashish, he begins to then fear that King Ashish is gonna kill him. And so you can imagine he's like, man, Saul's trying to kill me. King Ashish might be trying to kill me. And so he in this story in first Samuel 21, he acts like he's crazy. He he starts foaming at the mouth. He starts acting like he's crazy so that they'll just kick him out. And they do. They kick him out and he's safe. And in safety, then David pins this psalm. In response, in gratitude, David pins this psalm. And with that in mind, let's read this, Psalm 34 starting at verse one. David says, I will praise the Lord at all times. I will constantly speak his praises. I will boast only in the Lord. Let all who are helpless take heart. Come, let us tell of the Lord's greatness. Let us exalt his name together. Then David, listen to what he says in light of what I just shared in verse four. I prayed to the Lord and he answered me. He freed me from all my fears. Verse five, those who look to him for help will be radiant with joy. No shadow of shame will darken their faces. In desperation, I prayed and the Lord listened and he saved me from all my troubles. Pause real quick. David said, he saved me from death. Verse seven, for the angel of the Lord is a guard. He surrounds and defends all who fear him. And then finally verse eight, and this is what we're gonna really focus on this morning. David, he he he's praising him. He's he's explaining what God has done. And then he finally says, verse eight, taste and see that the Lord is good. Oh, the joys or blessed are those who take refuge in him. David, again, when you think of the context, he's so overjoyed. I mean, wouldn't you be if your life was spared? Hopefully, you'd be thankful too. I I didn't get killed. And it leads him to, Lord, praise you. Lord, you answered me. You're great. I wanna tell everyone. Lord, I wanna tell and finally, it leads to him saying, again, let's go back to verse eight. Finally, it leads to him saying, it's like this proclamation to everyone. He says, taste and see that the Lord is good. Let's let's pause on that part of the verse. Taste and see that the Lord is good. In other words, David, he says, listen, everyone, go to God yourself and experience personally that he is so good. He's so good. I wanna ask you guys a question this morning. This is a personal question. So take it personally. The question is, do you personally know that God is good, personally? Have you personally tasted and seen that the Lord is good. He is good. The Bible actually says so much about God's goodness. I mean, I wanna give you some examples. Psalm 86 verse five says, oh Lord, you are so good, so ready to forgive, so full of unfailing love for all who ask for your help. Verse, Psalm 100 verse five says, for the Lord is good. His unfailing love continues forever and his faithfulness continues to each generation. Psalm one nineteen verse sixty sixty eight says, you are good and do only good. Teach me your decrees. Psalm one forty five verse nine says, the Lord is good to everyone. He showers compassion on all his creation. And then Blake, I'm gonna have Blake turn to this one, to something Jesus said. Jesus, let's be reminded, God, fully God, fully man, God in the flesh, savior, Lord. Jesus said this in John 10 verse 11. In John 10 verse 11 he said, I am the good shepherd. The good shepherd lays down his life for the sheep. Jesus wanting everyone to to clearly see I'm good and I have good for you. I will lay down my life for you. God has is good and he has shown his goodness in the ultimate way by sending his one and only son, Jesus himself, to take upon all the sins, all of nastiness. Jesus took that upon himself on the cross. I mean, we can't even we can't even fully comprehend what Jesus took upon himself to save us. Is he good? He is good. And let me ask you again, do you know him personally? Have you tasted and seen personally that the Lord is good? I love something Max Lucado said about God's goodness. He said, the heart of God is unblemished. There is nothing deceitful in God, nothing two faced, nothing fickle. He has no hidden agenda or selfish motive. He loves with a good love and forgives with a good forgiveness. And then this, God's goodness is a major headline in the Bible. I I think I know why. If God were only mighty, we would we would salute him. But since he is merciful and mighty, we can approach him. No wonder the psalmist the psalmist invited taste and see that the Lord is good. And then hear this last thing from Max Lucado, a glimpse of God's goodness changes us. A glimpse of God's goodness changes us. God wants us, every one of us here to taste and see that he is good, that he is good. The verse goes on, the second half of verse eight. Let's read that. Again, the first part of verse eight eight says, taste and see that the Lord is good. And then it says, second half of verse eight, oh, the joys of those who take refuge in him or blessed are those who take refuge in him or trust him. You see, you know that Hebrew word, it can be translated blessed. It can be translated happy are those, joyful are those who take refuge in the Lord, who trust in the Lord. By the way, our God is the author of joy. Do you know that? If anyone tells you God is boring or lame, I don't know what God they're talking about. God is joy. He's the creator of joy. The fruit of the spirit, second on the list, love, joy. God has joy for me and for you that's found only in him. God God's made all kinds of things to display how joyful he is. That we saw a moose this morning. Those goofy looking guys. They're so pretty and beautiful, but they're goofy. And you can bet God was grinning when he made this. Look at this thing. You can bet he was joyful, the Father, the Son, the Holy Spirit going, this is this, the platypus, I mean a giraffe. You can bet the joy of the Lord was a part of this, creating these things. And he wants us to have that joy. Satan wants us to think that joy is found in sin and he's a liar. Sin leads to death. But there is joy that can't be fully described in Christ. There there is a joy that that is an everlasting joy, that there's nothing better than than that. And so he wants us to trust, to take refuge in him. Jesus in John 15 verse 11, he said, I've told you these things so that you will be filled with my joy. Yes, your joy will overflow. In John 17, that whole chapter is Jesus praying. Such a cool chapter. But in verse 13 specifically, John 17 verse 13, Jesus says, now I am coming to you and I told them many things while I was with them in the world, why? So that they would be filled with my joy. God wants us to be filled with his joy, but we have to go to him to find it. It's found in him. By the way, if this morning you're going, I'm lacking joy, I understand. Go to the Lord. Go to the Lord and find joy in him. Let me read this verse again, Psalm 34 verse eight, taste and see that the Lord is good. Oh, the joys of those who take refuge in him. So let me just reiterate this. God is good and he wants us to come to him daily to personally know him and his goodness. He wants us to taste and see it. By the way, let me give you some examples. He's good in that he provides for us, does he not? He's good to forgive. Anyone ever sinned here who needs forgiveness? He's good to forgive. He's good to direct us as we seek him, as we listen to him. He's good to be, the scripture says, an ever present help. Is that good? He's good. Don't miss this. He's good to provide trials so that we might depend on him as we walk through the valley. And valleys come. Many valleys come and many trials come. But God promises that he works all things for the good of those who love him. He's good. But not only that, the second part of of this verse, there is joy in him that can't be found anywhere else. There is joy as we take refuge in him, as we go to him for protection, for shelter, as we trust him, there is joy that, again, that can't be found anywhere else. Warren Weirsby, he so wisely put it this way. He said, those who seek the Lord discover that he not only saves and keeps, but he also satisfies. Taste doesn't suggest a sip or a nibble, it implies feeding on the Lord through his word and experiencing all he has for us. It means knowing him better and enjoying him more. It was a great blessing for David to be delivered from Goth and it was a greater blessing for him to be protected by the Lord after he fled, but the greatest blessing was drawing near to God and enjoying his presence, not just his gift. Psalm 34 verse eight says, taste and see that the Lord is good. Oh, the joys of those who take refuge in him. So with all that said, we might ask the question, okay, we hear this truth, we're called to taste and see that the Lord is good, we're we're called to to trust him, to take refuge in him and we find joy. But if you're like me, you might go, how? How do you do that? And so I wanna just give you three things, three short things. How do we how do we taste and see that he is good? How do we trust him? Number one, we go to him in his word. We open the Bible and we say, God, you tell me you're good. Show me. Speak to me. This is the book more than any other book that we are called to open expecting him to speak, not just in the past, but today. His word is living and active. And as we read it and as we seek after him, he shows us time and time again, I'm good. But we have to open it. And we have to say, God, help me here. So that's one, go to the word, open it. But also number two, pray. God has called us to communicate with him, to talk to him. Jesus in in Luke eighteen one, it says he told the disciples a parable that they would pray and never give up, that they would pray and never give up, never lose heart. We're called to pray because God made us and you talk to someone you love. If I'm gonna know my wife well, we have to talk and I have to listen. And so can I encourage you? Just these are just simple things, but we're so forgetful. How do we taste and see that the Lord is good? How do we find joy in him? Open the word and and come to him with expectation. Pray. And finally, this is key, and if I hope you've already done this, but we have to trust in Jesus as Lord and Savior. Jesus in John ten ten, he said, a thief, referring to Satan. A thief comes only to steal and kill and destroy. Jesus said, I have come so that they may have life and have it in abundance. Jesus came to give us true life. It is only found in Christ as we trust him as Lord and Savior, as we give him our sins and repent, and we believe on him that he is the only one who can save. If you have not trusted in Jesus, trust him today. But if you do trust him, then may this be refreshment to you today. Yes, Lord. A reminder. Yes, Lord. You are good, and I'm called to to taste and see that you're good. I'm called to take refuge in you, and as I do, experience the joy that's found nowhere else. Let me read this verse one more time if you haven't heard it yet. Taste and see that the Lord is good. Oh, the joys of those who take refuge in him. Friends, just in closing, I'll just share with you. This is why the Eichen family is going to plant a church in Gillette. We want everyone possible in Gillette to taste and see that the Lord is good. We want everyone in Gillette to see that there is joy to be found in Christ. There is joy as you trust in him. And so we fit we feel called to do that by planting this church. There's an empty, humble empty church building that's been empty for three years. And by God's grace, we're gonna he is gonna build his church. And by his grace, we're gonna see disciples made. We're gonna see people who come to see the Lord is good. We're gonna see people come to see that there is joy in Jesus that I find nowhere else, not in more money, not in more stuff, not in more anything else, but Jesus. Thank you for partnering with us. First b is partnering with us. We we greatly covet your prayers. If you wanna talk with me more, I would love to talk to you. But it is our privilege to be with you. And will you bow in prayer with me now? I'm gonna allow you just some quiet moments for you to just pray about what God has spoken to you through his word. And then I'll pray and we'll sing one last song. So let's bow in prayer. Lord you are so good. Father, I pray that we would be refreshed this morning by who you are. That you are good. That there is joy in you. Yes, Lord. Refresh us with this. And Lord, anyone here this morning who has not yet trusted in you, I pray that that this morning they would personally taste and see that the Lord is good. They would put their trust in Jesus. That you would help them do that. Thank you, Lord, for for who you are. We praise you, and we love you. In Jesus' name, Amen. Friends, would you stand with us as we sing this last song together. And surrender all and I surrender all to thee my to surrender. May me savior, thine. Let me feel the Holy Spirit truly know that surrender all to thee, my high blessed savior. Amen. Alright. Listen, we're gonna go, but hear these words. Do not conform to the pattern of this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind. Then you will be able to test and approve what God's will is, his good, pleasing, and perfect will. Lord, thank you for this day. Help us go now, not only to daily experience your goodness, but to share it. In Jesus' name, amen. God bless you guys.
