Rinsey's got a microphone if you wanna grab it back there. And, we're gonna worship the Lord this morning, united with our hearts. And, good to see your faces this morning. You ready? I'm ready. Okay. He keeps me singing seven forty six. If you want the music, the words will be on the screen. Let's rejoice with the with the Lord together this morning. There's within my heart a melody. Jesus whispers sweet and low. Fear not I am with thee. Peace be still. In all of life's ebb and flow. Here we go. Jesus, Jesus, Jesus, sweetest name I know. Fills my every longing, keeps me singing as I go. All my life was wrecked by sin and strife. Discord filled my heart with pain. Jesus swept across the broken strings, stirred the strumming cords again. There we go. Jesus, Jesus, Jesus, sweetest name I know, fills my every longing. Keep free singing as I go. Feasting on the riches of his grace, resting beneath his sheltering wing, always looking on his smiling face. That is why I shout and sing. Are you shouting this morning? Jesus. Jesus. Jesus. Sweetest name I know. Fills my every longing. Keeps me singing as I go. Though sometimes he leads through waters deep, turn the trove across the way. Though sometimes the path seems rough and steep, see his footprints all the way. Jesus, Jesus, Jesus, sweetest name I know, fills my every longing, keeps me singing as I go. I think that's it, Judy. Yeah. They're gonna I think there's another verse, but that's that's funny because that last verse talked about the the difficult trials and the I'm I'm looking around and seeing people I know and love that know the Lord, and sometimes you are out there lost feeling like you're all alone. Jesus is never away from you. Amen? Amen. Amen. Good news. His eyes on the sparrow. Let's let's be reminded through the great words of this song. Six twenty four, if you wanna follow the music in your hymnal. Alright. Let's sing together. Why should I feel discouraged? I'm I'm name name His eye is on the sparrow, and I know he watches me. I sing because I'm happy. I sing because I'm free. His eyes on the sparrow, and I know he watches me. Great words. Let not your heart be troubled. His tender words I hear, and resting on his goodness, I lose my doubt and fear. Amen. Nobody the path he leadeth. But one step I may see His eye is on the sparrow, and I know he watches me. His eye is on the sparrow and I know he watches me amen I sing because I'm happy I sing because I'm free. On the sparrow and I know he watches me. Believe those words you're singing. Whenever I am tempted, whenever clouds arise, when song gives place to sighting, when the hope within me dies when does the closer to him from care he sets me free his eyes on the sparrow and I know he watches me his eyes on the sparrow and I know he watches me should make you happy. I sing because I'm happy I sing because I'm free His eye is on the sparrow, and I know he watches me. Nice. Nice singing. Let's have a seat. Alright. Thank you. You too. Wonderful job leading. Last week, I was telling him that Carl and I ended up leading, and it just isn't the same. That is that's what we'll say about that. But Carl did do a nice impression of you up here, Scott. So so we'll take it. He can't. Yeah. He can't. No. Alright. So welcome again. Happy Mother's Day. We're so glad all you mothers are with us here today. Just a few announcement. Pray for Guatemala. Continue to pray for them. I see we've got a couple that were just there. Mike and JJ are back. I believe Ray may have landed or is still in the air. I hope he's not at the airport because I was supposed to take his car there after church. So, if I run out of here, that's what's going on. But you guys had an awesome time, I imagine. Yes. And they could still use prayer even though you're gone? That's excellent. Yes. So we'll continue to pray for Guatemala. And I'm sure in the weeks to come, we'll hear all about that trip. Alright. Monday night is happening, 06:00 down in the Fellowship hall. And we've got a special guest that's gonna be sharing with us on Monday. Him and his wife are missionaries or they have a ministry in Kenya. And they're just gonna kinda tell us about their experience over there and and working with children over there and just what's going on. So don't miss that. Their names are David and Kim Hatfield. So that is happening on Monday night. VBS is happening as well. That's coming up June twenty third and twenty fourth. Hero Central, Discover Your Strength in God. Just two days this year and a little different format. But if you've got kids or grandkids or neighbors that you wanna get registered for, do it sooner than later. That will help everybody out. And if you wanna volunteer for VBS to help out, we are still taking or needing some volunteers for VBS. And while you're signing up back there to be volunteer for VBS, go ahead and put your name down for nursery as well. Just a shameless plug there for that. But we're always in need of of helpers in the nursery as well. So if you feel so, join us. For VBS, you can see Christa Clemmer or Liz Owens. That's right. Yes. And nursery, can see Bailey Morley. The revelations, if you guys are around on Memorial Day weekend, that Sunday night, there's a group from Georgia, I believe. This is a connection that Ray has. And they're gonna come out and they're gonna put on a show for us here at First Baptist. And it's all free. Just come. And they just wanna kind of use their music as ministry and and do their thing. So that is the revelations. That's memorial day weekend, believe, PM on May 28. Put it on your calendar. It's gonna be a good show. And now the bar j Chuck Wagon show. That is the fundraiser for Turning Point. Yes. We've got some claps in the back. That's what I'm talking about. Got some excitement already. So that is happening May 30. And it's out at the Chuckwagon Show. Building's all good to go. It's gonna be. It's gonna be. But tickets are for sale here at First Be as well as at Turning Point. You can get those tickets the sooner the better as well with that. That way they know how to prepare and it's just gonna be a great time of raising some funds for for Turning Point. So make sure to check that out if that's something you may be interested in. For all other announcements, check your bulletin. And, again, just happy Mother's Day. Glad you guys here. Let's stand up, greet one another, maybe give a mother a hug, tell her how great she's done. Alright. Let's stand up and sing some more. And this is one of my favorite old hymns, I need thee every hour. Just reminded Jesus that we're with you. I'm looking at you, Lord, and he loves it when we do, and he'll respond. I need thee every hour, most gracious lord. No tender voice like thine can peace of lord. I need thee, oh, I need thee. Every hour I need thee. Oh, bless me now my savior. I come to thee. I need thee every hour. Stay thou nearby. Temptations lose their power when thou art nigh. I need thee, oh, I need thee. Every hour I need thee. Oh bless me now my savior I come to thee I need thee every hour enjoy your pain come quickly and abide or life is vain I need thee oh I need thee every hour I need thee oh bless me now my savior I come to thee This is a great worshipful song just to kinda unite us before our our message today. Kind of allows God to breathe in this room as we just unite our hearts and just fills him with joy and glory. Gives him the glory that he deserves as we recognize his presence. Amen? Amen. Surely the presence of the Lord is in this place. I can feel his mighty power and his grace. I can hear the brush of angels' wings. I see glory on each face. Surely the presence of the Lord is in this place. Let's sing it again. Of the Lord is in this place. I can feel his mighty power and his grace. I can hear the brush of angels' wings. I see glory on his face. Surely the presence of the Lord is in this place. Let's bow and have a quick word while Carl comes forward. Heavenly Father, we just wanna thank you for your presence here with us this morning. We thank you for this body that we can gather together and and we do so in Jesus name. Amen. Amen. And as we participate here in the worship through giving, I'd love to offer up a quick word of prayer and thanks. God, I just as we are singing that song, I thought, where would we be without your presence? And, it is so good. Life is so good without you, so much better than it would be without you. And I pray that it's your kindness that would lead us to see that we've fallen short. It's your kindness that would lead us to repentance. Your kindness that would lead us to just be generous people. And I thank you, God, for all the gifts that you've given us. You have blessed each person here with so many different gifts. Money is just one of them. We thank you, God, for providing for us in that way, but I know that many of us have other gifts to be used, so that people, not just here in Jackson, but around the world can know that you are good and great and awesome God. And so I pray that you'd use every gift that we, have been given, that we would exercise those gifts so that the world can know you, Jesus. Amen. Happy Mother's Day, mom. Really? Where would we be without you? Right? Real quick, I I'd like to introduce somebody that doesn't really need a whole lot of introduction. That's Nick Stern. How many you know Nick? Nick's our Whoo. Office. I'm done. Good night, everybody. Thanks. That was good. Not getting any better than that. Our, office, office assistant slash office manager slash pastoral presence slash pastor today, preacher. And so would you just give him a hand? Let him know. You're glad to see him. I know for a fact that Carl's glad to see me because I was over in the fellowship hall and he ran in there with wide eyes. It's like, you're preaching the second service too. Right? Like, no. No. You gotta do it, Carl. Sorry. So he's really relieved right now that I'm still here and I didn't run away. I have to start out by saying, what a blessing it has been to be a part of this church. And frankly, for the second service folks who have meant so much to me. When I moved here eight and a half years ago, I I looked on the website of First Baptist Church and it wasn't much and I loved that. And now that I'm in charge of the website, I try to slack off, so it's still that good too. But it's been such a blessing to be poured into by so many people, particularly in the second service. So much love and so many, good moments I can share. They get me a little choked up, frankly, of of people who have been there through some really hard times and some really good times and have made those good times even better. And, it's just an honor and a pleasure to be here today. And I've gotten several code words from several people of what should happen if I should start to fall apart. So I'm looking for all the signals throughout the church service. You guys are you guys are great and, such a blessing. I don't have to tell on most of you, but Chris and I really love the old testament. And a few weeks ago, I was reading in my morning Bible time and I got stuck in first Samuel chapter eight and I just stayed there for about a week. And just mulling over it and it just struck me as really deep. And I kept feeling like God wanted me to preach a message on first Samuel chapter eight at some point. And a week later, Ray asked me if I wanted to preach. And I'm like, well, that's easy. I got just the verse. You know, it was that was a real blessing to me. But unfortunately, I didn't realize that that means I'd be preaching on Mother's Day. So my sermon today has nothing to do with Mother's Day. I'm sorry. That's just the way it goes. But I do wanna take a moment and thank you all so much. Many of you have been like a mother to me. And here's a picture of my mom and my grandma, two very hardworking women who have sacrificed so much for my brothers and I and their relationship my mom's relationship with my dad is is exemplary and frankly why I'm not married. Because this it's so good that I don't think I can top what they have. Know, it's really special to see that symbiotic relationship with those two together. So with that said, happy Mother's Day. Today's sermon is about first Samuel chapter eight, Israel asks for a king. Now, like I said, I I love the Old Testament because I feel like we get to know so much about God's character, how he interacts with us, how we should interact with him, and we learn a lot through that. We we get to study about how we should live and really the character of God and who he is through that so that when we get to the New Testament, we kind of get a deeper perspective on that grace and that that fulfillment and I made up this little chart. It's not exact but of time in relevance from Old Testament to New Testament. The blue section is Old Testament time, most of that circle. And that is just Abraham's birth to when, the Old Testament was finished being written in about four thirty two BC. And the New Testament was written in less than ninety five years. So to give you that perspective of time, in the Old Testament, we get a huge portion of history to know how God reacts to people and how that really full is fulfilled in the New Testament. So I think it's there's a lot of value in studying the Old Testament. That's why we're there today. Now, in the bulk of the Old Testament, there was no king that led over Israel. God was their king. And can there be a better way? And in fact, I'm gonna use the the stage today as a little bit of a timeline. On this side, we've got, when Adam and Eve are walking in the Garden Of Eden with God, and they're spending time with God like walking with him in the cool of the evening. What paradise? What could be better? But as they push him away, they're expelled from there and slowly we see them continue to push God away, away, away. And God continues to call them back by lifting up people throughout history to to guide them and to raise them out and help them lead towards repentance. And these are just a few of the names there, both men and women. One of my favorite characters is Moses in the Old Testament. And he, after coming down with the 10 commandments, there's other commandments that are given to the people. There's not just 10. And, one of them is how to ask for a king. And God, tells them this little passage in Deuteronomy seventeen fourteen, which will be a little bit of a preface for today. So in Deuteronomy seventeen fourteen, it says, when you enter the land the Lord your God is giving you and have taken possession of it and settled in it, and you say, let us set a king over us like all the nations around us. Be sure to appoint a king over, appoint over you a king the Lord your God chooses. Pretty nice. Pretty simple. Right? It's pretty loving there. Like, when you get to this place, make sure you ask for king because prior to this, they were in Egypt. They were in captivity. They were slaves up to this point. God raises up Moses and Aaron, marches them through the desert, saves them again, gets their attention again over and over, and and this is God's, like, way of preparing them for the future. And it goes on. There's a few other stipulations that your king must possess. And this is a condensed version of that. It's good to go back and read it. But must be an Israelite. You should be ruled by your own people. Must not acquire a great number of horses or go to Egypt to get more horses. Now, is a little dated, right, because we don't necessarily need horses anymore, but that was a sign of wealth back then. And the people were told, do not go back to Egypt. Okay? Don't go back to slavery. You're free now. Live in that freedom. So going back to Egypt was a bad sign. Stay where you're at. Must not take many wives or his heart will be led astray. Must not accumulate large amounts of silver and gold. Must not consider himself better than the other Israelites and must read the scrolls of the law daily. Now, that last one, I know I'm the one that paraphrased it, but it's a little too simplified. The the king was actually supposed to copy down the scrolls themselves so that they were an active participant in the scriptures. They were supposed to know it that deep and that that heartily. So Chris here, my twin brother, told me I need to keep this whole presentation light. And so far we're doing good but we're to that point where people start to nod off and that kind of thing. So I'm gonna wake you up for just a second with a picture of a kitten. Right? Isn't that nice? Aren't we happy? And if that wasn't enough and I wasn't generous as it was, woah, whole bunch of kittens. Yeah. Every people who don't like kittens here's a dog. Okay, so good. So we're back into it a little bit. Right? See, we're all it was all about generosity here. Oh, more scripture. Okay. Let's get back into it. That's right. So now we're gonna pick up where the meat of our our dialogue takes place today in first Samuel eight four. Now, this is taking place less than five hundred years, but more than four hundred years after Moses. Okay? So this is now we're in first Samuel chapter eight four. So all the elders of Israel gathered together and came to Samuel at Ramah. They said to him, you were old and your sons do not follow your ways. Now appoint a king to lead us such as all the other nations have. This should sound familiar, right? Because earlier in Deuteronomy, they asked for a king. Sorry. He warned that they would ask for a king using almost that same, words the same words, like all the people around us. And it continues. But when, when they said, give us a king to lead us, this displeased Samuel. So he prayed to the Lord and the Lord told him, listen to all that the people are saying to you. It is not you they have rejected, but they have rejected me as their king. This kind of hurts, doesn't it? This is a weighty moment. Right? And it's a little confusing for me. It's a little confusing because earlier, four to five hundred years earlier, God gave them the instructions to have a king. And yet, when it gets to be that time, he's upset. He feels rejected. And Samuel's upset because he was their leader and God had been so faithful through that. He'd taken them to battlefields and said, hey, look how faithful God has been, and yet the people want to turn away from that. So there was this little confusion and it was really hard for me to rectify why there's this disparage why there's a problem, why they don't match up, whatever that word is. Why they don't match up? And it's really because it's that tension that we talk about a lot here at First Be, where there's the free will and there's our choice. And there's a tension between that one. Right? We can choose to have a king over us, but God wants to be our king. He desires to be a king. He is our king technically. Right? Even though we have the choice to walk away from that. And in order to put that in relatable terms, I'm a school bus driver. Most of you know that. Well, there's many school bus drivers here. In fact, nearly all the school bus drivers in T Town County go to this church. Praise God. Isn't that wonderful? So but the the the whole story comes basically like I'm a school bus driver. I'm at the front of the bus and I can look up in that mirror and the kids are misbehaving nearly all the time. Not your kids, everybody else's kids. So they're misbehaving and as long as they're in that seat, they're safe. We can tell them over and over again, stay seated bottom bottom, back to back, out of the aisle, hands and feet to yourself. I got this whole spiel I give And as we're driving down the road, I look up in that mirror and they look at me and they stand up. Right? They do it anyway. They have the freedom to stand up even though I tell them their safest spot is seated down and listening to me. It's kinda how it is with God. Right? He gives us these instructions. This is the best way you should go. And sometimes we just look him right in the eye and stand right up, don't we? And it's painful. It's hard to see that kind of stuff. It continues in the verses. Oh, I have to back up just a little bit to make this make sense. But they rejected me as their king. As they have done from the day I brought them out of Egypt until this day, forsaking me and serving other gods, so they are doing to you. Now listen to them, but warn them solemnly and let them know that they what a king who will reign over them will claim as his rights. This is heavy stuff. God's remembering back when he brought them out of Egypt back in Moses' day when the people kept rejecting him, when they kept saying, we wanna go back and be slaves. Wasn't it better when we were slaves? You read those passages, you don't really fully understand, but we kinda do that too, don't we? And there's a moment of grace here that's easily skipped over. God's warning them. This is what to look out for. Things are gonna get rough. If you want a king, you wanna go your own way, he doesn't just cut them off. He says, here are some guidelines. Watch out for this. He did that five hundred years ago too. Here's a little bit more. So in first Samuel chapter eight ten, it says, Samuel told all the words of the Lord to the people who were asking him for a king. He said, this is what a king who will reign over you will claim as his rights. He will take your sons and make them serve as his chariots and horses, serve with his chariots and horses, and they will run-in front of his chariots. Some he will sign to be commanders of thousands and commanders of fifties, and others to plow the ground and reap his harvest. And still others will make weapons of war, and equipment for his chariots. He will take your daughters to be perfumers and cookers cooks and bakers. He will take the best of your fields and vineyards and olive groves and give them to his attendants. He will take a tenth of your grain and all your vintage and give it to his officials in attendance. Your male and female servants and the best of your cattle and the donkeys, he will take for his own use. He will take a tenth of your flocks, and you yourselves will become his slaves. When that day comes, you will cry out for relief from the king you had chosen, but the Lord will not answer you in that day. Ouch. That's heavy. Right? That's really heavy. I the Lord will not answer you on that day. That's not the picture of God we like to hear. Right? We don't like to hear that sometimes God is silent and lets us walk into disaster and suffer the consequences, but biblically, that's true. And that's really hard to rectify, isn't it? And God's warning them, you wanted to be slaves five hundred years ago, now you're gonna be slaves again, but to somebody you chose, this sounds like a great idea. And when you come crying to me, I'm not gonna answer you. That's really people. That's really hard. When Samuel heard all that the people said, he repeated it to the Lord. The Lord answered them, listen to them and give them a king. But the people refused to listen to Samuel. No, they said, we want a king over us. Then we will be like all the other nations with a king to lead us and go out before us and fight our battles. Think about today's culture. Right? We wanna be like everybody else, don't we? We wanna hide that we're Christians. I do this a lot too. I try to be like the world. I try to blend in. I try to be nice. I try to fit in. And I add their theology to mine, and that's not the way it's supposed to go. We're supposed to be set apart. We're supposed to be different. And how does that work out for the people of Israel when they decide to be like all the other nations? What does that look like? Does that remind you of anybody? You probably saw the slide. Solomon, the third king of Israel. So the people ask Samuel for a king, and then they get Saul as their first king. I don't know if you guys have read about Saul, but he's one of the most tragic characters in the Bible. And sadly, I relate to him because he just struggles and he just he's so into what he's doing. Second king, David, good king, still struggles. Third king, Solomon. Now this might sound familiar because back at the beginning with the let's stop there for a second. That was pretty great. Right? Right here. There's a lot of these things that really fit Solomon well. Must not acquire a great number of horses. He had a lot of horses. Must not take many wives or his heart will be led astray. He had many wives. His heart was led astray. Must not accumulate large amounts of silver and gold. Bingo. Must not consider himself better than the other Israelites. It doesn't say it explicitly in the Bible, but when you're told you're so smart and so brave, I imagine that one probably had something to do with it. Just my interpretation. And you must read the scrolls of the law daily. Solomon walked away from God and did things his way because he was supposedly the smart one, the wise one of Israel. And it's sad. He leads the people of Israel astray. And right after that, the kingdom is actually broken into two pieces under his kids. The kingdom's crumbling literally in front of his eyes walking away from God. So here's a story, a personal story, wake us all up again and relate. And I hesitate to tell a story because I'm ashamed of it. I am really ashamed of this moment. But I need to tell it. In summer of two thousand eleven, I was working for the Cleveland Indians baseball team. Best job of my life. One of the worst baseball teams of all time. So much fun. Had a great time. Loved it. How many of you know. And during that time, there was this girl that I was interested in. Had been interested in her for years. None of you know her, don't worry. I can talk freely. But my brother told me never to date her. My friends told me not to date her. When I prayed, God told me not to date her. So what did I do? I dated her. Right? I walked right into that trap. And one day, it was I think it was in August, I woke up. She was she was sleeping upstairs. I was downstairs on the couch because she lived far away, and don't worry, none of that was going on. But I woke up in the middle of the night. I rolled down on my knees and felt the presence of the Lord on me. And we don't talk about this a lot at first because it's complicated. And you really do need to match up what you feel like God is saying to to scripture. And this time I knew this was God talking to me. He said, don't date her or she will destroy you. And those are the words that I felt like God was saying to me. She will destroy you. And I was terrified. I spent the morning on my knees just praying. Did I break up with her when she woke up? No. Why? God came to me and told me, you're walking in the wrong direction. I dated her for like three more weeks after that, and it was awful. How many times in our life do we walk in the wrong direction knowing it's the wrong direction and say, it's okay. It's culturally a sense it's it's culturally okay now. The world is changing. We live in a new era. God is the same. He's been the same all the way through history. Why don't we want that consistency and know when we're falling into a pit? We should want that. We should desire that. We should walk in there. So the question for you today is, who is your king? What's your king? We live in kind of a difficult place, don't we? I mean, it's great. We probably have it the easiest out of anybody in the world because we're the wealthiest community in America and have been for a while. But there's a lot of traps here. Right? The love of money. That's what I said in the first service. I've been to Christian conferences and and known people that say basically, if you're a Christian and you're poor, you're an idiot. And that is not true. And we believe a lot of things like that, don't we? What about gossip? Gossip's a sin that we just don't talk about anymore. Selfish ambition? Did you know that selfish ambition is a sin? What? I've been to conferences where you go to leadership conferences and then they tell you that you have to be something. You have to go out there and lead. Be go go get what you want. That is not scriptural. So who's our king gonna be? Are we gonna dig into the scriptures and really find out what God wants us to be and who he wants us to be? Or we're just gonna let it slide and try to pretend and get in on on the bare basics of what we can? Why don't we go back to the Garden of Eden and walk with God daily and know what he wants for us and and just just marinate in his love and scripture. Because even though years ago, God leaves the Israelites and tells them, I'm not gonna I'm not gonna listen to you when you cry out for me. Eventually, what happens? A new king, the king of everyone, whether they like it or not, comes down and saves us all, not in a battle or a war, not in a golden palace, but on a cross for each and every one of us, so we don't have to live like the world anymore. We don't have to suffer. We don't have to walk alone anymore. So why don't we go live in that presence, live in God's presence and chuck the rest of it to the trash? We don't need it anymore. We live in freedom that Christ gives us. So I'm gonna invite the, singers back up here. But tonight, if you today, if you guys need anybody to pray with, and if you're listening to this on the podcast or anything like that, call the church. Talk to each other. There's a lot of really wise good people here. Now let's bring our sins before each other, confess them, and get to know God on that intimate level once again. Thanks guys for all you do. God bless you all. What a great word. What a great word to hear this morning. Let's stand and praise God together. Dear Lord and Father of mankind, this is a pretty old hymn, but it's got some great words. Thanks, Nick. That was awesome of you to to be willing to serve, to step into that. Thank you. Amen. Dear Lord and father of mankind, forgive our foolish ways. Reclothe us in our rightful mind in pure lives thy service find in deeper reverence praise in simple trust like there's a herd beside the Syrian sea calm. That's a good heavy hymn to end with today. Yeah. That's perfect. Isn't it? You wanna give us a closing benediction? Yeah. We've got one up here on the slides Very good. You're way ahead of me. When you were dead in your sins and in this uncircumcision of your flesh, God made you alive with Christ. He forgave all our sins, having canceled the charge of our legal indebtedness, which stood against us and condemned us. He's taken it away, nailing it to the cross, and having disarmed the powers and authorities, he made a public spectacle of them triumphing over in the over the cross. So remember today that you've been forgiven if you really ask for it, that God has triumphed over all of our weaknesses and our sins, and we just need to turn in to him and do that. Go today and live like you've been forgiven. God bless you all.
