The Gospel of John

John 4:27-42

November 13, 2025

²⁷ Just then his disciples returned and were surprised to find him talking with a woman. But no one asked, “What do you want?” or “Why are you talking with her?”

²⁸ Then, leaving her water jar, the woman went back to the town and said to the people, ²⁹ “Come, see a man who told me everything I ever did. Could this be the Messiah?” ³⁰ They came out of the town and made their way toward him.

³¹ Meanwhile his disciples urged him, “Rabbi, eat something.”

³² But he said to them, “I have food to eat that you know nothing about.”

³³ Then his disciples said to each other, “Could someone have brought him food?”

³⁴ “My food,” said Jesus, “is to do the will of him who sent me and to finish his work. ³⁵ Don't you have a saying, ‘It's still four months until harvest’? I tell you, open your eyes and look at the fields! They are ripe for harvest. ³⁶ Even now the one who reaps draws a wage and harvests a crop for eternal life, so that the sower and the reaper may be glad together. ³⁷ Thus the saying ‘One sows and another reaps’ is true. ³⁸ I sent you to reap what you have not worked for. Others have done the hard work, and you have reaped the benefits of their labor.”

³⁹ Many of the Samaritans from that town believed in him because of the woman's testimony, “He told me everything I ever did.” ⁴⁰ So when the Samaritans came to him, they urged him to stay with them, and he stayed two days. ⁴¹ And because of his words many more became believers.

⁴² They said to the woman, “We no longer believe just because of what you said; now we have heard for ourselves, and we know that this man really is the Savior of the world.”

Faith doesn’t command—it beckons: Invitations, not instructions.

Thoughts

  • Come, See (27-30): “Surprised” (thaumazō) is tame. “Shocked,” or “blown away” better: lips sealed, but thought bubbles blowing up! Why? She drops all to worship. Her come, see is more urgent and commanding than Philip’s invitation to Nathanael Jn 1:46. Sense: You gotta come, right now! He knows everything—everything—I ever did, and loves me just the same!
  • **Harvest is NOW! (31-38)**: The village is pouring out (ērchonto) to the well en masse while the guys are sorting sandwiches. Isa 55:2 Why spend money on what is not bread, and your labor on what does not satisfy? Listen, listen to me, and eat what is good, and you will delight in the richest of fare.” The time is now, and the disciples are missing it. Open your eyes is weak—epairō has a powerful theological flavor of perceiving the big picture of what God is doing Cf. LXX Isa 40:26, Luk 21:28. The harvest is not future-tense: it’s right here, right now, fulfilling Amo 9:13 “The days are coming,” declares the LORD, “when the reaper will be overtaken by the plowman and the planter by the one treading grapes.
  • Come, See—Believe (39): The limited testimony of a “flawed” witness bears great fruit, proving: 1 Cor 1:27-29 But God chose the foolish things of the world to shame the wise; God chose the weak things of the world to shame the strong. God chose the lowly things of this world and the despised things—and the things that are not—to nullify the things that are, so that no one may boast before him.* We have only to say, “Come and see!”
  • Faith Through Encounter (40-42): The scandal is not that the Samaritans believe, but that the Jews lost the plot, choosing avoidance over engagement—because God’s call to Abram was Gen 12:3 “I will bless those who bless you, and whoever curses you I will curse; and all peoples on earth will be blessed through you.” The mission was always to all people, and here it is: We know that this man really is the Savior of the world. Recall Joh 1:11-12 MSG He came to his own people, but they didn’t want him. But whoever did want him, who believed he was who he claimed and would do what he said, he made to be their true selves, their child-of-God selves.

Reflections

  • He knows everything you ever did—and loves you just the same. Does your heart need to hear that today? Where in your life is he inviting you—to deeper love, trust, and connection?
