³¹ To the Jews who had believed him, Jesus said, “If you hold to my teaching, you are really my disciples. ³² Then you will know the truth, and the truth will set you free.”
³³ They answered him, “We are Abraham's descendants and have never been slaves of anyone. How can you say that we shall be set free?”
³⁴ Jesus replied, “Very truly I tell you, everyone who sins is a slave to sin. ³⁵ Now a slave has no permanent place in the family, but a son belongs to it forever. ³⁶ So if the Son sets you free, you will be free indeed. ³⁷ I know that you are Abraham's descendants. Yet you are looking for a way to kill me, because you have no room for my word. ³⁸ I am telling you what I have seen in the Father's presence, and you are doing what you have heard from your father.”
³⁹ “Abraham is our father,” they answered.
“If you were Abraham's children,” said Jesus, “then you would do what Abraham did. ⁴⁰ As it is, you are looking for a way to kill me, a man who has told you the truth that I heard from God. Abraham did not do such things. ⁴¹ You are doing the works of your own father.”
“We are not illegitimate children,” they protested. “The only Father we have is God himself.”
⁴² Jesus said to them, “If God were your Father, you would love me, for I have come here from God. I have not come on my own; God sent me. ⁴³ Why is my language not clear to you? Because you are unable to hear what I say. ⁴⁴ You belong to your father, the devil, and you want to carry out your father's desires. He was a murderer from the beginning, not holding to the truth, for there is no truth in him. When he lies, he speaks his native language, for he is a liar and the father of lies. ⁴⁵ Yet because I tell the truth, you do not believe me! ⁴⁶ Can any of you prove me guilty of sin? If I am telling the truth, why don't you believe me? ⁴⁷ Whoever belongs to God hears what God says. The reason you do not hear is that you do not belong to God.”

Thoughts
- True Discipleship and Real Freedom (31-32) Jesus turns to those who had just believed in him and gently challenges their understanding of freedom. Most of us picture freedom as total independence — “No one tells me what to do. I define my own truth, I choose my own path.” But Jesus offers a deeper, sweeter vision: since everyone is mastered by something, true freedom is not the absence of a master. Real freedom is being mastered by the right Person—Jesus Christ. As we abide in his teaching, day after day, we begin to know the truth—not just as an idea in our heads, but as a living reality in our hearts. ➤ Truth isn’t a concept. Truth is a Person—Jesus himself.
- Illusion of Freedom vs. Fact of Slavery (33-36) The people answered proudly, We are Abraham’s descendants and have never been slaves of anyone. How can you say we shall be set free? They were certain their bloodline and religious heritage made them secure in God’s family. Jesus cuts straight through the illusion: Everyone who sins is a slave to sin. The great irony is that the people who claimed they had never been slaves were actually the most enslaved of all—bound by pride, tradition, and self-righteousness. See Isa 14:14 Pride was, after all, the first sin. ➤ Only the Son can make us truly free.
- What Does it Mean to Be a Son of Abraham? (37-47) Jesus says your true father is revealed not through words, but by what you love and what you do. They boast, Abraham is our father and God is our Father. Yet they want to kill the One who speaks God’s truth. He says, If you were Abraham's children you would do what [he] did… If God were your Father, you would love me. Then he drops the gavel: You belong to your father, the devil, and you want to carry out your [his] desires. Your true father is revealed by whether you love the truth when it costs you, or whether you resist it to protect yourself. Verse 38 lands hard: Jesus speaks from intimate, personal knowledge of the Father—something seen and tasted in His very presence. The religious leaders only have head knowledge. They know about God, but they do not know Him in their hearts. Their actions betray whose voice they are actually listening to. You can have accurate theology and still belong to the wrong father. ➤ But here is Good News: The same Jesus who exposes your slavery offers to adopt you, and make you a beloved child of the Father.

- Do my loves, words, and actions show that I belong to God, or that I’m still living under the influence of the father of lies?
