¹ “I am the true vine, and my Father is the gardener. ² He cuts off every branch in me that bears no fruit, while every branch that does bear fruit he prunes so that it will be even more fruitful. ³ You are already clean because of the word I have spoken to you. ⁴ Remain in me, as I also remain in you. No branch can bear fruit by itself; it must remain in the vine. Neither can you bear fruit unless you remain in me. · ⁵ “I am the vine; you are the branches. If you remain in me and I in you, you will bear much fruit; apart from me you can do nothing. ⁶ If you do not remain in me, you are like a branch that is thrown away and withers; such branches are picked up, thrown into the fire and burned. ⁷ If you remain in me and my words remain in you, ask whatever you wish, and it will be done for you. ⁸ This is to my Father's glory, that you bear much fruit, showing yourselves to be my disciples.
The branch does not make the fruit. The vine does.
Thoughts
- The True Vine and the Father's Gracious Pruning (1-3) The cross looms hours away, and Jesus paints a picture to sustain his men when they can no longer see him: I am the true vine. They knew the OT picture. Ps 80 brings the vine of Israel up out of Egypt and ends with the hedges down and the wood burned. Israel was planted to yield fruit, and it did not. Christ takes up the role and becomes what the vine of Israel never was: true. As with the true light and the true bread, the type finds its fulfillment in him. The Father then works every branch, taking away wood that bears nothing and pruning wood that already bears. Then (3) reminds them where they already stand: You are already clean because of the word I have spoken to you. Clean and prune share a root in Greek. The Father had already begun pruning these men, and he did it through the words and works of Christ. ➤ His word cleans us first, and the Father prunes only what is already his.
- In Me (4-6) Jesus gives one small command in these verses: remain. Not work harder, feel more, resolve better. Remain where you already are: in him. The clause runs both ways: remain in me, and I in you. Jesus doesn't ask a branch to graft itself in. If you hear remain as a task, the passage turns into a schedule: remain connected, keep the devotions up, produce more. (3) shut that down before it started. What remaining gives a believer is everything Christ has. Paul's word for a Christian is a person in Christ: forgiveness (Eph 1:7), adoption (Eph 1:5), a righteousness never his own (2 Cor 5:21), and being made holy (1 Cor 1:2). Paul gathers the same gift in one line in 1 Cor 1:30: in Christ Jesus, our righteousness, holiness, and redemption. Then Jesus says it works this way because the branch never produced the fruit. The life came up out of the vine, and turned into grapes at the end of it. The branch never had the capacity to produce fruit on its own. That is what apart from me you can do nothing means. The Greek is a double negative. Not less; nothing. A severed branch is gathered and burned. ➤ In Christ, everything. Apart from him, nothing.
- The Fruit That Glorifies the Father (7-8) (4) said said remain in me, and I in you; (7) says remain in me and my words remain in you. That is how his presence reaches them (and us) once he is gone: the Spirit brings his words back, and those words live in us. Then a promise too large to read alone: ask whatever you wish, and it will be done for you. No blank check for our desires. When Christ’s words live in us, we start asking for what Christ already wants. (8) turns the focus away from the branch: the Father is glorified in much fruit, and the fruit shows them to be disciples. They are not disciples because they produced; the fruit makes visible what the word already made them. None of this waits on our feelings. Life flows from a real person, risen and reigning today. Joined to him, we bear what we could never produce on our own, not in a hundred years of trying. The fruit is received, not earned. ➤ His words in us change what we ask for, and the fruit reveals to whom we belong.
