A More Excellent Ministry by a Better Mediator

October 27, 2019 · Hebrews

Scripture referenced 10 passages

The passage this message was preached from, in full, with every other passage it reached for.

  • Hebrews 8:1-13 the main passage for the sermon

1 Now in the things which we are saying, the main point is this. We have such a high priest, who sat down on the right hand of the throne of the Majesty in the heavens,

2 a servant of the sanctuary, and of the true tabernacle, which the Lord pitched, not man.

3 For every high priest is appointed to offer both gifts and sacrifices. Therefore it is necessary that this high priest also have something to offer.

    4 For if he were on earth, he would not be a priest at all, seeing there are priests who offer the gifts according to the law;

5 who serve a copy and shadow of the heavenly things, even as Moses was warned by God when he was about to make the tabernacle, for he said, “See, you shall make everything according to the pattern that was shown to you on the mountain.”

6 But now he has obtained a more excellent ministry, by so much as he is also the mediator of a better covenant, which on better promises has been given as law.

7 For if that first covenant had been faultless, then no place would have been sought for a second.

    8 For finding fault with them, he said, “Behold, the days come”, says the Lord, “that I will make a new covenant with the house of Israel and with the house of Judah;

9 not according to the covenant that I made with their fathers, in the day that I took them by the hand to lead them out of the land of Egypt; for they didn’t continue in my covenant, and I disregarded them,” says the Lord.

10 “For this is the covenant that I will make with the house of Israel. After those days,” says the Lord; “I will put my laws into their mind, I will also write them on their heart. I will be their God, and they will be my people.

11 They will not teach every man his fellow citizen, and every man his brother, saying, ‘Know the Lord,’ for all will know me, from their least to their greatest.

12 For I will be merciful to their unrighteousness. I will remember their sins and lawless deeds no more.”

13 In that he says, “A new covenant”, he has made the first old. But that which is becoming old and grows aged is near to vanishing away.

Jeremiah 31:31-34

the longest Old Testament quote in the New Testament, describing the new covenant God would make with Israel and Judah

31 “Behold, the days come,” says Yahweh, “that I will make a new covenant with the house of Israel, and with the house of Judah:

32 not according to the covenant that I made with their fathers in the day that I took them by the hand to bring them out of the land of Egypt; which covenant of mine they broke, although I was a husband to them,” says Yahweh.

33 “But this is the covenant that I will make with the house of Israel after those days,” says Yahweh: I will put my law in their inward parts, and I will write it in their heart. I will be their God, and they shall be my people.

34 They will no longer each teach his neighbor, and every man teach his brother, saying, ‘Know Yahweh;’ for they will all know me, from their least to their greatest,” says Yahweh: “for I will forgive their iniquity, and I will remember their sin no more.”

Recap

The message in order, in a few minutes of reading.

Pastor Mark was preaching through Hebrews and reached chapter eight, which states plainly that Jesus is our high priest seated at the right hand of God, ministering in the true heavenly sanctuary. The sermon followed the text's argument that the old covenant was temporary by design, pointing toward a better covenant enacted by a better mediator. The long quotation from Jeremiah 31 stood at the center of the message, showing that God himself promised a new covenant written on hearts rather than stone.

What was said

The writer of Hebrews signals early that a main point is coming, and when it arrives in chapter eight it is direct: we have such a high priest. Pastor Mark traced that title back through earlier chapters, noting that Jesus being called high priest is not new information by chapter eight. The point being pressed is the kind of high priest he is, merciful and faithful, one who makes actual propitiation for sin rather than simply identifying it.

Jesus ministers in the true tabernacle, not the earthly one. The earthly tabernacle and later the temple were built according to the pattern God showed Moses on the mountain, and the writer of Hebrews treats that seriously. The pattern was given because those structures were copies and shadows pointing toward the heavenly reality where Jesus now serves.

Because Jesus is not of the tribe of Levi, he would not qualify as a priest under the old covenant at all. That is not a problem with Jesus, it is the argument. The old covenant operated by external rules administered by priests who were themselves weak and whose sacrifices had to be repeated. That system was good, and it was of God, but it was always temporary.

The fault the text finds with the first covenant is that it had no power to transform the people under it. It could identify sin through the law, but it made no provision to change hearts. Pastor Mark put it this way: training wheels are a good thing when you need them, but they were never the destination.

The longest Old Testament quotation in the entire New Testament then arrives, taken from Jeremiah 31. God himself, speaking through Jeremiah to a divided and covenant-breaking people, promises a new covenant. It will not be like the one made when he led them out of Egypt, which they broke. This one he will write on their minds and hearts, and its basis is his mercy: he will forgive their iniquity and remember their sins no more.

The writer of Hebrews closes the quotation and draws out one word from it: new. When God called it a new covenant, he made the first one obsolete. Pastor Mark was careful to say this is not throwing the Old Testament out. Road signs are useful until you arrive, and when you arrive you no longer need them. The old covenant pointed faithfully toward this one, and now, through Jesus as mediator, God writes his law inward rather than on external stone.

Doing a Bible study?

Here is a guide we have prepared for you: the passages in order, questions for the group, and room to write.

  1. The pastor described the original audience of Hebrews as Jewish Christians being tempted to return to first-century Judaism to escape persecution. When have you been tempted to retreat to something familiar or comfortable rather than stay the course in your faith?
  2. The sermon described the old covenant as a 'copy and shadow' of the true tabernacle in the heavens, using the illustration of a dim old projector versus a bright new one. What does it mean to you personally that Jesus ministers in the real thing rather than the copy?

4:51 Speaker 1Y'all may have a seat. I have a few announcements. I actually almost skipped the announcements this morning. I don't know if it's my lingering frustration from the head cold or what but this is not my favorite part of this of the morning. There's a paper bulletin that has all of these announcements in it and I continue to do this.
5:09 We'll go through em real quick. There's a Bible study for junior high and high school girls that's happening during the first service about 09:25 or 09:30. Youth group is tonight, five to seven. Right here, they're going to have a costume event. I don't know exactly what to call that.
5:27 This evening, five to seven right here at the church. Tomorrow, Awana will be happening. It's slightly different this week because Awana is going to meet down the hall in the fellowship hall and we are going to have here in this room, Monday nights at First B will be a concert by Tim and the Glory Boys. So, tomorrow, meal music and message. We will have the meal and we'll have the music and the music will be the message.
5:49 That's the way that tomorrow is going to go and I think I have a little blurb about that. Bible study at the Senior Center Jackson Holesmont is 12:45. The act study is wrapping up soon. Alright, this Thursday, the last one, if you want to get in on the Lamentation study, I'm going to get on on that one. It's I'm looking forward to it.
6:12 It's three weeks building up towards Thanksgiving of a study of Lamentations. This is the last one on Axis week at nine. Jackson Holt Men's Alliance started this week at 6AM right here in this building, 6AM breakfast and a Bible study on Ephesians. Operation Christmas Child is cranking up, getting ready to go. There are some green and red boxes in the back.
6:36 If you want to be a part of spreading the love of Jesus through these gifts in other places in the world, you can send out a box through Operation Christmas Child. There will be a wrapping party on November 20 and this is Tim and the Glory Boys, the Buffalo Roadshow. They're coming up. They called us yesterday from Missoula or day before. It was yesterday, wasn't it?
7:00 From Missoula and said they had limped in, lost the turbo on their tour bus, but they were still gonna make it. And they will be here tomorrow night. They've got and I'm just gonna let him talk for them.
7:18 Speaker 3Hey, my brothers and sisters. Hey, church. I'm Tim.
7:20 Speaker 1I'm Colin.
7:21 Speaker 3And we are half of Tim and the Glory Boys coming to you live from the tour bus. Whoo. That's gonna be rolling through your town on the Buffalo Roadshow. What is the Buffalo Roadshow, you ask? It's beards.
7:30 It's banjos. It's blessings.
7:32 Speaker 1That's right. It's for all denominations and all generations. It is gonna be one epic worship hoedown.
7:37 Speaker 3We can't wait to see you there.
7:38 Speaker 1One epic worship hoedown is the way they presented presented it, and it's multi generation. So it'll be some stuff that you know, some stuff you don't. You might have heard them on the radio and beards and banjos and stand up basses and all kinds of fun stuff. So connect hours happening between services still. And if there's anything else, please, it should be in the paper bulletin.
8:00 So and if if I have missed something, you can always let me know and I'll announce it. Anything else? This is that opportunity. There's one. Yes.
8:10 Okay. So, over the next couple of weeks, we have two memorial services that are coming up. One of em is for Hugh Sowas, the beloved. Our Hugh Soes service is this Friday and then West Flanagan service is the sixteenth which is Saturday. Both of em are 11.
8:26 If you could help out by bringing the dessert to the one this Friday, that would be really really helpful. So, Nancy asked me. She's in charge of bereavement ministry here. So, if you see Nancy Cummins, would you wave? That's her and just let her know that you'd be bringing something, that'd be great.
8:40 If there's anything else, it'll probably be in your paper bulletin. Would y'all stand and greet one another And Florine and I will bring you back together with a peppy little song. Near the cross.
11:49 Speaker 2Its beams around me in the cross in the cross be my glory
13:38 Speaker 1Amen and I I appreciate the extra measure between verses so I could catch my breath too. Thank you. My Jesus, I love thee. Hymn number 79. Such a good song.
13:56 Thank you. My Jesus, I love you.
14:07 Speaker 2My Jesus, I love thee I know thou for thee all the follies of sin I
16:08 Speaker 1Amen. Come on. Have a seat and I'll invite the frontline team to come forward. God, thank you for this beautiful morning and for new life, new life available in Christ and transformation that's available in Christ. Thank you for the new covenant.
16:26 Lord, I pray that we'd be proponents of that new covenant. We would use all of the Old Testament and Old Covenant teachings to point towards Jesus and I pray that we would do that. I pray that we would live our lives out in such a way that our neighbors around us though they would not understand it would be intrigued by it and come to know you through our faithful walk and witness with our words. Right now, as we come to time to take up offerings and tithes, lord, to be used in your service. We pray that you would advance your kingdom through the obedience of your servants who gathered here.
17:06 God, would you do your will and your way through the gifts offered this morning. Pray that you'd bless and multiply the gift and bless the giver. In Jesus name, we ask to do your will. Amen. Thank you, Flo We're up to Hebrews eight and on your bulletins, you have one through six.
19:58 That's the what I was thinking I was going to do but from seven down through 13, there's an Old Testa quote and I just went ahead and put that in there too. So, eight one through 13 is what we're up to. I mentioned having a cold I I heard a song recently and the guy while he's talking in the midst of the song, he said, getting a head cold is like being pulled over by the grim reaper and given a warning. Just let you know of your own mortality and I am feeling that this morning. I I want to talk about and this is straight from the text, a more excellent ministry by the mediator of a better covenant.
20:34 That's what the text gets to this. It's a more excellent ministry. Jesus has a more excellent ministry by the mediator, that's Jesus of a better covenant. And after the first service, somebody came forward and said, what exactly is the fault? And I hope to bring that out in this service, in this sermon better than in the first but the fault of that old covenant is that it was passing away.
21:02 It was, there's a temporary nature of the old covenant and the new covenant is something that lasts forever. We covered that last week in Jesus's ministry being perfect and then all of the previous priest being weak. So, anyway, Hebrews eight one through 13 starts off this way and this is always nice. When a pastor or a preacher or a speaker of any type at a Ted Talk will say, now, the pain point is this, so that you don't miss what they're trying to say. Hebrews is 13 chapters long at the very end of Hebrews it says, now this is just a short little note to tell you.
21:34 It's 13 chapters long and it's cyclical and repetitive in some ways but the main point is obvious and if it has not been obvious here to four, it's flatly stated. Now, the main point in what has been said is this, we have such a high priest. Now, if you remember back, this is being spoken by the writer or writers of Hebrews. It's being spoken to people who knew first century Judaism. They knew the Old Testament Septuagint Greek translation of the Old Testament very very well.
22:12 Every argument that is made by the writers of Hebrews is made on the basis of Old Testament scripture. Taken very seriously word for word. It is very very appropriate but these Jewish background Christians who had been exposed to the truth, Jesus, the way, the truth, the life were being tempted now to go back because of persecution, being tempted to go back to what they knew where the persecution was not as strong to go back to first century Judaism The main point in what has been said is this, we have such a high priest and the such points back to last week, Jesus, the perfect high priest In contrast with all of the other priest and high priest that came before him, he has no weaknesses. He is a forever seated at the right hand. Actually, we'll go on in the text.
23:01 Now, the main point in what has been said is this, we have such a high priest. If you look back to Hebrews two seventeen says, therefore, he, Jesus, had to be made like his brothers and sisters in all things so that he, Jesus might be come a merciful and faithful high priest. It's not the first time we've heard him called a high priest. The main point is, Jesus is such a high priest. He's merciful and faithful.
23:26 He's high priest and things pertain to God to make propitiation. He actually pays the payment for sins. He can expunge, propitiate, pay for, cancel, sins of the people. Priests make atonement. That's what they do.
23:45 They attempt to absolve. That's what they are. Tasked with putting people right with God. Therefore, he had to be made like his brothers and sisters in all things, tempted in every way just as we're tempted yet without sin so that he might become a merciful and faithful high priest and things pertaining to God to make propitiation for the sins of the people. We have such a high priest, eight.
24:09 One says, and so dear brothers, this is Hebrews three one and so dear brothers and sisters, who belong to God, partakers, and who are partners with those called to heaven. Think carefully about this Jesus whom we declare to be God's messenger and high priest. I think that's a new living translation right there. The verb is at the center, consider, and actually, it would be better said, carefully consider all the way through to a conclusion. Think it through and come out with resolve on the other side.
24:39 Brethren, holy partakers of a calling that's heavenly, carefully considered all the way through to a conclusion. The apostle, one from sin, from God, and the high priest, one who can stand on behalf of mankind before God. The apostle and high priest of our confession, this, Jesus, carefully consider him all the way through and resolve to follow him. Come what may. We have such a high priest.
25:08 It's not the first time he's been called the high priest. It's not the last time either. If you look nine one through twenty eight and ten one through twenty and twelve twenty four and thirteen twelve all have to do with the same subject of the priestly service of Christ. Now, in the first century, they understood their need for a priest especially within Judaism they needed. Now, other religions are vague copies of that where people sense that there's something that's not right.
25:33 In our day, I think we have less of a consensus that there's anything wrong with us at all. Right? Everybody lives out their own truth. You live your truth. I live my truth and then it'll be fine.
25:47 The truth is either truth or it's not. A shadow and a copy of the truth maybe but a flawed copy. So, the main point in what has been said up to this point where at chapter eight out of 13 chapters, we have such a high priest who has taken his seat at the right hand of the throne of the majesty in the heavens and that in itself reminds me of another verse where it talks about Jesus's priestly service. It goes all the way back to the very beginning. The exor the first four verses, the third one says this, and he, Jesus, is the radiance of God's glory.
26:21 He emanates from God. He is the exact representation of his essence, his nature. He's the imprint of God exactly. God and he, Jesus, upholds all things by the word of his power and his name has not been named yet but he's building towards that and when he had made purification of sins, that's Jesus's priestly service. The purification of sins was on him and upon him alone, he then sat down at the right hand of the majesty on high.
26:51 We're seeing this repeated in chapter eight. So, the very first verses, the exodium which tells about what the whole book is about, mentions Jesus's priestly service and his session. The fact that he has seated at the right hand of the father, interceding for those who put their faith in him. Now, the main point of what had been said is this, we have such a high priest who has taken his seat at the right hand of the throne of the majesty in the heavens. Oh, it's location too.
27:21 In the heavens. It's in the heavens. The locust of where Jesus's current ministry as a priest is happening is in the heavens. A minister in the sanctuary consecrated place, holy place. Jesus is a minister in the sanctuary and in the true tabernacle and the true tabernacle.
27:43 That adjective true is to say that y'all know about the Tabernacle. You study the Old Testament. You know everything about how that was to be who was to carry the pieces and the parts, how you were supposed to set it up, and who encamped around about it, who could go into what places, you understand that. Now, the temple is standing right there and y'all understand how the temple works too. It will go on to say but those things are a copy of the true tabernacle.
28:10 The true tabernacle which the Lord pitched and not man. Jesus is seated at the right hand of the throne of majesty on high in the heavens ministering in the sanctuary and the true tabernacle which the Lord pitched not man for every high priest is appointed to offer both gifts and sacrifices at the time this was written sixty six, sixty seven AD around there. The temple's destroyed in '70. There are only three, four years left before the temple will be destroyed. The writer of Hebrews, I don't know, knew that was coming, a doubt, knew that that was coming but knew that it was coming, not just when.
28:51 Every high priest is appointed to offer both gifts and sacrifices. That's true. By the law, that's true. So, it is necessary that this high priest, this Jesus, this high priest also have something to offer. Are you with me?
29:07 Okay. So, now, if he were here on Earth, he capitulates, that's Jesus. Now, if Jesus were here on Earth, now he lived on Earth. He did. He lived for thirty, thirty three years.
29:19 He was crucified and resurrected and then ascended and is now seated at the right hand of the father. If he were on Earth, then he would not be a priest at all. Why not? Because we go on this Earth. We we're going by the law and the law said that Levites were priests.
29:37 Jesus was of the tribe of Judah. He was not a priest. Now, if he were on Earth, he'd not be a priest at all. Since there are those who offer the gifts according to the law. Like, I know what you know.
29:49 I was one of you, the writer of Hebrews or writers of Hebrews. I know what you know about this whole covenant. I understand that very well and I know that if Jesus were on this Earth right now, he would not be doing the same things that these guys are doing. He would not be making the same offers of gifts and sacrifices. Since there are those who offer gifts according to the law.
30:10 Who are those? Those are the Levites. That's on the camp out. Those are the ones who have the priestly service. They're the ones who carry the tabernacle in the wilderness.
30:18 They're the ones who are tasked with all of the holy rights in the temple. Since there are those who offer the gifts according to the law, those who serve a copy and a shadow of heavenly things. That is very important. There is a sanctuary and a true tabernacle that which really is and then there is this earthly tabernacle or earthly temple that is a copy and a shadow of those actual true heavenly things. Now, the main point of what has been said is this, we have such a high priest who's taking a seat at the right hand of the throne, a majesty in the sanctuary, a minister in the sanctuary and the true tabernacle and it goes to these Levites are serving a copy and a shadow.
31:03 It was for a time. There's a temporariness to their ministry. Copying a shadow of the heavenly things. Every argument or every point that the writer of Hebrews makes to these first century folks and to us here today is backed up by scripture. So, this is who serve a copy and a shadow of heavenly things just as Moses was warned by God when he was about to erect the tabernacle or see in a very emphatic position.
31:36 See this, take note. Behold, look, see, he says, that you make all things according to the pattern which was shown to you on the mountain Moses. I'm going to show you how things are. I'm going to show you how things are and then I'm going to give you a plan and I want you to go by that plan. Now, want you to go by that plan because that plan points towards what is true and good.
32:02 In fact, the Old Testament quote builds argument. This is Exodus twenty five forty. See that you make them all of these things in the tabernacle. After the pattern for them, which was shown to you on the mountain. Actually, if you go back further than that, Exodus twenty five eight and nine says this, let them construct a sanctuary for me, God, that I may dwell among them according to all that I'm going to show you as the pattern of the tabernacle and the pattern of all its furniture just so you shall construct it.
32:35 Alright? Just so, you shall construct it. Do it like I'm telling you because I'm pointing towards something that matters. The details make a difference. But now he, the he there, capital H, is pointing to Jesus but now Jesus has obtained a more excellent ministry.
32:53 Title of the sermon was a more excellent ministry by the mediator of a better covenant but now, Jesus has obtained a more excellent ministry than any of these guys who are serving a copy or a shadow or pointing towards Jesus is actually ministering in the way that they were pointing to. The temporary external static law which would tell us what our sin was but would give us no way of really transforming but just being found guilty. Jesus has obtained a more excellent ministry by as much as he is also the mediator, that's a peacemaker, that is one who is standing between warring parties, a mediator, one that helps them come to terms. God and man brought together by the mediator, the God, man, Jesus Christ but now, he has obtained a more excellent ministry by as much as he is also the mediator of a better covenant. The other covenant was good.
34:00 It wasn't bad but it was temporary. Paul would say, it was a tutor. It was a pedagogue. It was a teacher. It was a disciplinarian but it was pointing towards this, to to to ride with a bicycle with training wheels, right?
34:22 Training wheels are good thing. When you need training wheels but it would be ridiculous for the Tour the France to be run with by people with training wheels, would it not? Or a tricycle. Yeah. It's something that helps you stabilize and figure out how to do this but if you it's pointing towards your lack.
34:39 Now, he's obtained a more excellent ministry but as much as he is also the mediator of better covenant which has been enacted on better promises and now, that's up through verse six. In verse seven, we'll see another argument, another presented logical argument, and it'll be based on an Old Testament quote. It's a big if. Last week, we had a real big if two and seven one. Eight seven says this, for if that first covenant had been faultless but it was flawed and it had a fault.
35:10 The old covenant, the first covenant had a flaw or a fault. I I believe it's the temporariness of the nature of it. It was not a forever. It was a pointing towards that which would be forever. For if that first covenant had been faultless, last week, we saw this in seven one.
35:26 Now, or seven eleven. Now, if perfection was through the Levitical priesthood, was it? It was not because they were weak and it was temporary and their sacrifices
35:37 Speaker 2had to
35:37 Speaker 1be done over and over and over again. Just the way that God had commanded pointing towards that. On the basis of that Levitical priesthood, the people received the law. What further need then was there for another priest to rise according to the order of Melchizedek? We covered that thoroughly.
35:54 Not being designated according to the order of Aaron. If Jesus were here on Earth, he wouldn't be a priest because we've got it in our minds that priests are exactly this way but I'm asking you to have a paradigm shift and come out of thinking that way. If that first covenant had been faultless but it wasn't, that's contrary to reality. If that first covenant had been faultless, there would have been no occasion sought for a second. We needed a better covenant.
36:19 Now, that might sound like heresy. God has enacted the way and he has said the way that it's going to be. Why would we be looking for anything else? Well, he said the way that it was going to be but now, the Old Testament quote that he's going to bring out is going to point to the new covenant. If that first covenant had been faultless, there would have been no occasion sought for a second for finding fault with them.
36:44 Oh my goodness. The law itself is what found fault with humanity. I can say that in Adam, we all sinned. Yes, we have original sin but then we do it by choice. It's by nature and then, it's by choice.
37:00 For finding fault with them and I I think it's speaking specifically about the wilderness generation because that's the example he's about to use. We're finding fault with them. He, God, says and then this is an Old Testament quote. It's actually the longest Old Testament quote in the whole New Testament and it's a few verses from Jeremiah 31 starting this way. Behold, days are coming.
37:28 It is future but non specific. We don't know when it's happening. At this time, when Jeremiah's writing, the old covenant is in place. If you will be my people, I will be your God. If you will follow my rules, I will do this.
37:42 It's a covenant works really. It's given by God and it's good. Behold, days are coming, says the Lord. When I will effect a new covenant, I will effect a new covenant with the house of Israel and the house of Judah. Now, the fact that this is from Jeremiah is significant.
38:02 Jeremiah was a prophet who was prophesying during the time of a divided kingdom. Israel and Judah were two separate entities and Jeremiah says, speaking word of the Lord says, behold, days are coming, non specific time but in the future. Behold, days are coming, declares the Lord. When I will make a new covenant with the house of Israel and with the house of Judah, there is going to be a unifying covenant with the people of God. Imma Imma read the whole thing actually.
38:34 This is the whole quote from Jeremiah. I want you to hear it at once and then we'll go through it in Hebrews. Jeremiah 3,131 says this, behold, days are coming, future but non specific as it exactly when. Declares the Lord, when I will make a new covenant with the house of Israel and the house of Judah. It's interesting that Christ was of the tribe of Judah too, right?
39:01 I'll make a new covenant with the house of Israel and the house of Judah not like the covenant which I made with their fathers in the day that I took them by the hand to bring them out of the land of Egypt. They were slaves in Egypt. They had done nothing to deserve the deliverance that God was offering them and he took them by the hand. He says so. To lead them out of the land of Egypt.
39:22 My covenant which they broke. It was good. It was of God. It was his covenant. It was old.
39:28 It's temporary and they broke it. Although I was a husband to them, he was faithful and they were unfaithful. Declares the Lord. This repeated of declares the Lord gives you the the fact that this is of God. It's it's God that's saying this.
39:45 It's not man. It's not just a logical argument. It's just straight up from declares the Lord but this is the covenant which I will make with the house of Israel after those days. Non specific but future. Declares the Lord.
39:59 I will put my law within them and on their heart, I will write it. What it had been written on before that? It been literally carved in stone. By the finger of God, carved in stone, external, and static. Showing you your fault but making no provision for that fault.
40:24 I will put my law within them and on their heart, I will write it and I will be their God and they shall be my people. They will not teach again each man his neighbor and each man his brother saying, know the Lord for they will all know me. He's talking about his new covenant people will know him and they'll know him internal in a dynamic way, not just externally and static where they're pointing out, you broke the law, you broke the law, you broke the law, you have to follow the law this way. If you don't follow the law this way, you're not following the law. They will not teach again each man his neighbor and each man his brother saying, now, know the Lord for they will all know me from the least to the greatest of them declares the Lord for I will forgive their iniquity and their sin I will remember no more.
41:09 Behold, days are coming, says the Lord, when I will affect. He takes it on himself. God saying, I am going to do the work involved in this covenant and it's by my faithfulness that you will be forgiven your sin. Behold, days are coming, says, lord, when I will affect the new covenant with the house of Israel and the house of Judah and it's not like it is other of a different kind if you follow the text, not like the covenant which I made with their fathers on the day when I took them by the hand, lead them out of the land of Egypt for they did not continue in my covenant. That from Jeremiah flatly straight straight translated from the Hebrews says, they broke it.
41:49 They did not continue in my covenant and I did not care for them, says the Lord but that was part of the covenant. If you will be, I will be and they weren't and he wasn't but this is the covenant that I will make in the future, non specific time. When with the house of Israel after those days, says the Lord, I will put my laws into their minds. Thank you, lord. I will put their laws I I will put my laws into their minds and I will write them on their hearts and I will be their God and they shall be my people.
42:24 This is declared by the Lord and they shall not teach everyone his fellow citizen and everyone his brothers saying, know the Lord for all of my people will know me, all of them will know me. From the least to the greatest of them. There's an internal relationship with God that happens by the better ministry of Jesus Christ by that mediator, it allows us to have God to write the laws directly on our hearts. When Jesus said that the whole law can be summed up in these two love God and love people Loving God and loving people The law set up. This is the way that you love God this way.
43:06 This is the way you love people this way, exactly this way and if you fail or air in this, there's no provision made. All will know me Internally by placing faith in Christ, you can have the gift of the Holy Spirit to lead you For I will be merciful to their iniquity. This is New American Standard and I will remember their sins no more The merciful to their iniquities and the NIV is and I will forgive their wickedness It's our hearts are bent towards wickedness and I will forgive their wi ness. I'll remember their sins no more. Back to the NASB, I will be merciful, not give them the punishment that they deserve for their shortfall, iniquity, sin.
43:52 I'll remember their sins no more. Then he closes the quote, the writer of Hebrews closes the quote from thirty one thirty four chapter 31 of Jeremiah and only brings out one word, one word from that whole thing. When he said, the prophet, when or when God, capital H, when God said, a new covenant, he made the first one obsolete. Now, that sounds like the writer of Hebrews is just throwing the whole Old Testament out the window or the whole covenant, old covenant out the window but that's not exactly what he saying. That was temporary for a time to point to this.
44:29 You don't need road signs for how to get somewhere when you actually get there. When you're there, you're there, right? And we're there. A new covenant. When he said, a new company made the first obsolete but whatever is becoming obsolete, growing old is ready to disappear.
44:48 Now, this is written and distributed just three years before the destruction of the temple. The Holy of Holies, the place where God dwells, the highest place in all of Judaism. And it was by God's decree and by his law. It was a copy in the shadow but the locust of God at that point was thought to be there. Whatever is becoming obsolete and growing old is ready to disappear.
45:17 Man, what a prophetic word that was. From the author of Hebrews. Do y'all remember when we used to use these things, these projectors right here? When I would show a video on Sunday mornings, I said, watch this video. Do y'all remember seeing the video?
45:34 Most of the time you squinted like this and I said, now, this little girl in the car seat and she's saying so and so because I had to describe what was going on because you couldn't see it because these things were old. The bulbs were dull. They were dim. It was broadcast up here. It wasn't really made for the exactly But when these things is like, woah, that's a lot better than that.
45:52 The better covenant, this this is literally pointing towards that. But it's a shadow compared to this, right? So, the old covenant is a copy and a shadow but it's pointing towards this new covenant, this better covenant by this mediator, this one that is our perfect high priest. Now, when we go forward, we'll see more ways that Jesus acts as that merciful and faithful high priest seated right now in session before God. He's interceding on behalf of those who have trusted in him and he has sent his spirit forth to plead with us to the truth of his scripture for the conviction of our sins and for the convincing of God's righteousness in the way that he has made.
46:48 I'm looking forward to the rest of Hebrews and it's kind of an odd place to end right there but it it it goes on. Okay? It goes on and we will go on next week. I want you to consider these two things. I brought it out more in the first service than the second.
47:03 The external and static law from the outside had no power or provision that was made to make us better but the new covenant does make provision. By the blood of Christ, through the gift of his spirit, we do not just have this external list of do's and don'ts and do them this way just as I have commanded and we now have him writing the law in our hearts. We're saved by grace through faith. It's not of ourselves. It's gift of God so that no one should boast.
47:36 But we are his workmanship that's created in Christ Jesus to do good works. Those good works, he writes on our hearts. Are you with me? And so, whereas the world saying, I've gotta live out my truth. That's not real and good but for a Christian, it is.
47:57 It makes a difference. It's not this external list of dos and don'ts. It is an internal sense of what God is directing us into. When you walk in those steps that he has prepared ahead of time for you. When you are humble before him and you long to do his will, he will work and and he'll transform.
48:17 So, think that that's it. That's the last slide. I know that. They it went black so that's it. Would y'all stand with me and we will sing day by day.
48:29 This is a great song of lament really. There is not a choice except for to go through things day by day as hard as they are as difficult as life is. Our father's own wise bestowment. He gives what he needs. Would you sing with me?
48:44 And if you'd like to contact me, if you want to talk to me, I will be available after but also available throughout the week.
49:01 Speaker 2Day by day and with each passing moment strength I find to meet my trials here trusting in my father's own bestowment I have no cause for worry or for fear He whose heart is kind beyond all measure gives unto each day what he deems best lovingly it's part of pain and pleasure mingling tore with peace and rest every night and looms self is near me with a special mercy for each all my cares he fain would bear and cheer me he whose name is counselor and power the protection of his talent treasure this help me then in every tribulation so to trust your promises oh Lord that I lose not faith. Author me within your holy word. Help me, lord, when toil and trouble
51:08 Speaker 1Amen. For the benediction this morning, I'm taking from the words of Paul by the Holy Spirit. Romans twelve two says, and do not conform to the pattern of this world. There's a true, there's a true thing that God has asked us to conform to. Do not conform to the pattern of this world but be transformed by the renewing of your mind and then, you will be able to test and approve what God's will is, his good, and his pleasing, and his perfect will.
51:36 God, would you bring that about in our lives this week as we submit our will to the will of God, to the spirit of God by Jesus' power. We thank you that he is interceding for us and we pray that you would direct us through your spirit and we would have the strength lord to walk in the way that you prepare for us. Jesus name, amen.
