Be a Simple Kind of Man

May 11, 2014 · James

Scripture referenced 7 passages

The passage this message was preached from, in full, with every other passage it reached for.

  • James 5:13-20 the main passage for the sermon, covering prayer for the suffering, cheerful singing, calling the elders for the sick, anointing with oil, and the prayer of faith

13 Is any among you suffering? Let him pray. Is any cheerful? Let him sing praises.

14 Is any among you sick? Let him call for the elders of the assembly, and let them pray over him, anointing him with oil in the name of the Lord,

15 and the prayer of faith will heal him who is sick, and the Lord will raise him up. If he has committed sins, he will be forgiven.

16 Confess your offenses to one another, and pray for one another, that you may be healed. The insistent prayer of a righteous person is powerfully effective.

17 Elijah was a man with a nature like ours, and he prayed earnestly that it might not rain, and it didn’t rain on the earth for three years and six months.

18 He prayed again, and the sky gave rain, and the earth produced its fruit.

19 Brothers, if any among you wanders from the truth and someone turns him back,

20 let him know that he who turns a sinner from the error of his way will save a soul from death and will cover a multitude of sins.

quoted on counting it all joy when falling into various trials and the testing of faith producing patience

2 Count it all joy, my brothers, when you fall into various temptations,

3 knowing that the testing of your faith produces endurance.

4 Let endurance have its perfect work, that you may be perfect and complete, lacking in nothing.

James 2:1-7

quoted on not holding the faith with partiality, the man with gold rings versus the poor man in filthy clothes

1 My brothers, don’t hold the faith of our Lord Jesus Christ of glory with partiality.

2 For if a man with a gold ring, in fine clothing, comes into your synagogue, and a poor man in filthy clothing also comes in;

3 and you pay special attention to him who wears the fine clothing, and say, “Sit here in a good place”; and you tell the poor man, “Stand there,” or “Sit by my footstool”;

4 haven’t you shown partiality among yourselves, and become judges with evil thoughts?

5 Listen, my beloved brothers. Didn’t God choose those who are poor in this world to be rich in faith, and heirs of the Kingdom which he promised to those who love him?

6 But you have dishonored the poor man. Don’t the rich oppress you, and personally drag you before the courts?

7 Don’t they blaspheme the honorable name by which you are called?

Recap

The message in order, in a few minutes of reading.

The pastor closed out the study of James on Mother's Day by drawing a straight line between the book's direct, loving commands and the kind of advice a good mother gives. The sermon moved through the final passage of James alongside a few unexpected companions: Linda Sue McDaniel, and Lynyrd Skynyrd's "Simple Man."

What was said

the pastor opened by noting that James 5:13-20 is built from imperatives, as the whole book has been, and that those imperatives fall into four categories: encouragement, exhortation, warning, and challenge. He realized that list sounded familiar. It sounded exactly like his mother, Linda Sue McDaniel, who he described as five feet tall, all love, and always ready with an encouraging word no matter how hard that word might be.

Working through the passage, he pointed out that James puts the responsibility on the person who is hurting or sick to act. If you are suffering, pray. If you are cheerful, sing psalms. If you are sick, call the elders. That last one struck him as worth sitting with: James does not say wait for someone else to arrange a visit. He says let the sick person call. The elders will come, they will pray, they will anoint with oil, and the prayer of a righteous person, as the ESV puts it, has great power as it is working.

He then introduced the musical thread that had been running through his mind all week. "Simple Man" by Lynyrd Skynyrd kept looping because of something specific in its chord structure. The song uses the one, four, and six chords but never resolves to the five. It sits in a kind of unfinished tension, a minor chord that never fully lands.

He played through the song's verses and mapped them onto James almost line by line. The mother's opening instruction to sit down and listen echoed James's call to be swift to hear, slow to speak, slow to wrath. The warning to forget lust for the rich man's gold sat directly next to James's rebuke of favoritism toward the wealthy and contempt for the poor. The repeated refrain to be a simple kind of man, to love what you understand and not chase the things of this world, ran parallel to James's consistent pressure against double-mindedness and worldliness.

The unresolved chord was the point. The song never settles because the young man's life is the resolution. Whether he takes his mother's advice or not is what determines whether the music finally lands. The pastor said the same is true of James. The book is full of good, direct, loving counsel, and it only resolves in a person's life if that person actually takes it.

He offered a word of care to anyone who reads James and finds it only condemning. He said to back up and look at what is being ignored, because the Holy Spirit is sent to convict of sin and convince of God's righteousness, not to leave believers under condemnation. James is not beating anyone down. He is spurring people on toward a simple, active, God-directed faith, the same way a good mother does.

He closed with a challenge to let their lives be that fifth chord, the note that causes a mother's advice, and James's advice, to finally resolve. For those who did not have a loving earthly mother who gave that kind of counsel, he pointed back to the Bible itself as the place where the same voice can be found.

Doing a Bible study?

Here is a guide we have prepared for you: the passages in order, questions for the group, and room to write.

  1. The pastor pointed out that James puts the responsibility on the sick person to call the elders, rather than leaving it to family or friends. What do you think holds people back from asking the church for prayer, and what would it look like for this congregation to make that easier?
  2. The pastor described the prayer of a righteous person as having 'great power as it is working,' suggesting the prayer itself is doing something even before any visible healing occurs. What does that change about the way you approach praying for someone who is sick?

0:00 Come sit, don't rule and ring. In the dark parts of the den, increase in us we pray. Need your power in past. We seek your kingdom first.
4:08 Good morning, everybody. Y'all can have a seat. Happy Mother's Day. I have been thinking about what what should we do for Mother's Day? What should we do?
4:17 Chocolate. It's a good idea. Remember, remember that. I just wanna acknowledge you. At the same time, Tanya and I were married for fourteen and a half years before we had Paschal.
4:31 And I know how difficult mother can be Mother's Day can be if you're longing for that, but you're
4:35 not that.
4:37 So, I just wanna acknowledge before all of you that mamas and those who give good advice, I'm including in that. We just really, really appreciate y'all so much. We'll get back to it again in the in the service and I think the kids have something going on downstairs doing kids church for you but we are very very happy to have our mamas. In the South, there's a tradition of wearing a carnation or a flower rose. It's a red one if your mother is living or a white one if your mother has passed, and this morning was the first morning I think I've gotten up that I have not ever I have not done that.
5:13 But I just wanna acknowledge with the passing of miss Seal Lamb, Last week, we had a service here on Thursday and to see the legacy that a mama can produce. It's just amazing. So, happy Mother's Day to all of you whether you are a mother or you just have one or you had one. Happy Mother's Day And we're gonna move on to a few announcements. Hey.
5:35 Speaking of Mother's Day, Hayden Paul Anthony Smith was born 05/02/2014, eight pounds two ounces twenty inches. Anything else you wanna add to that? Nope. Alright. Unusual announcements of upcoming events on the Mother's Day edition.
5:56 No middle school youth group tonight. Instead, do something wonderful this evening with your mom And they also helped out yesterday at the church cleanup day which is coming up soon. Tomorrow night at 06:00. Correct me if I'm wrong but it is Grand Prix night at Awana, right? It is indeed Grand Prix night at Awana tomorrow night, 06:00.
6:17 Precept Bible study is back in its normal position this week on Thursday. Last week, the reason this one's weird is because last week, it was weird. Thursday at 09:00 sharp, they'll be doing that down the fellowship hall and I wanna say thank you to the church work day. It may not be overwhelmingly apparent, like the the chairs are not facing towards the back wall, but all the windows are clean, and there are no cobwebs, and it's vacuumed upside, downside, bottom. Smells great in here.
6:42 Thank you very much for coming out. There was a scrub team. A bunch of people actually came out and helped all day yesterday, ten to two. But thank you for doing that. Men's ministry outing.
6:52 I shortened this one. Zehnder's Earth Lodge trip. Meeting here on Saturday at 7AM for the Exodus. Heading out, fellowship around good food made over a fire, manual labor followed by collaborative chili. Collaborative chili.
7:07 Does that sound good? Each one of the guys is bringing a different ingredient, and they're gonna put it all together and cook it over a fire while they're working and having fun. And then after the chili, crazy fun of various types, including shotgunning, hatchet throwing, archery, who knows what else? But plan on being back here at the church by 06:30. That's gonna be down near Cora, Wyoming.
7:29 So, if you're leaving from Bondurant, you could just meet him there instead of coming here but that ought to be a good trip. Next Saturday, May 17, it is for the men's ministry, not exclusively just the men's fraternity. Baby bottle campaign, just a reminder or turning point. If you need a due date, we called it May 27 is the due date for those bottles to be back in. They could use the help right now, but May 27 is also the annual turning point benefit out at the Bar J.
8:01 Knights of Columbus usually help organize that, but the Bar J really host it and handles most everything. Arrive early for a silent auction, but the gates open just like they always do at 05:30, and the show starts at seven just like it always is. And it'll be the early season version of the show. And if you would, help us out with BBS supplies out there over to the my left, your right, is a toolbox and a table and a bunch of posters about Vacation Bible School. There are cards in that toolbox and on the table that say that name or whatever kind of supplies we need.
8:37 If y'all would like to help out with VBS, would you grab a few of those cards and just buy that stuff and then bring it back into the church? You would be a great help. If you need any more information, whisper to Christa Christa Clemmer. She has very little voice this morning, but she'll lean in close, I'm sure. And that's it, I think, except for the fact that Carl is not up here.
8:57 I'd be ready for y'all to shake hands. What's that?
8:59 Friends? This is the day we rise up and call her blessed. From the nobility of her character, the diligence of her hands, and for all her savvy buying and selling, for her discipline, her gentleness, and always for her love, for her strength and dignity, for her laughter, and for countless encouraging words, for all the vital lessons she has taught us, for her patience, and for her endless acts of service, for being the one who cheers the loudest for us to walk in the way of wisdom, and for being the first to forgive us when we take the path of the foolish, And most of all, for living each day as a daughter of the king and as a servant of the one who saves us. This is the day we rise up and call her blessed.
10:59 We let our moms know we love them. Give them a big hand. Love you moms. Yeah. Yeah.
11:08 Why don't you guys stand up, greet one another, say hi to the person next to you, and we'll get back into song. Sing to our holy God.
14:38 I live with you, and my soul sings out as your word flows down far away. I sing to you, and my heart cries only. The New Year father. Hope is heal all day long. I won't be or storm fun.
16:07 He's the past. Stand is my song. I'll stay. My hope is here alone. I'll wait on you.
16:25 You were my refuge. I'm away
17:32 God, we thank you. Thank you for being our hope, our strength, our light, our salvation. We thank you, God, for for being real and, for offering us peace, for offering us hope, for offering us forgiveness. This morning, God, we wanna lay aside are the distractions that, have kinda piled up during the week and, set our set our sights on you, the author and the perfecter of our faith. God, we thank you for the cross.
17:58 We thank you for for all that that means that it's brought us forgiveness, that it it's forgot it's given us peace with God through faith in Jesus. And, tonight, we clay or today, we claim that message, and we give you praise. Amen. You may have a seat. I'd like to invite the, offering team to come forward as we participate here in the worship of giving.
22:35 And, and if you're a first time visitor, we're not asking for your money. If this is, your home, I would strongly encourage you to participate in the worship of giving, as it is one expression of, our thanks, our adoration, our praise, our following the Lord. But I'd like to pray. God, just as we have sung your love that is so amazing and so so divine demands our soul, our life, our all. And the part that we've sang about dying to our self, bids me come and die and find that I may truly live.
23:17 That that's what it is. And God, how hard is that to die to ourselves, to to lay ourselves aside and to fix our eyes on you. But, again, with we attempt to do that as a church family. God, we just acknowledge once again that we we need you in all things and acknowledge that you are lord and that we have fallen short. But I thank you God for the righteousness of Christ, and I thank you God for the righteousness of Christ that lives in us through faith.
23:54 That's a wonderful thing that you've offered us, and so we offer our thanks, our praise this morning. Amen.
24:00 We'll see how this goes. This has been ringing in my head for three days. For three solid days, I've been able to think of nothing else. It's bad. Not the way I play it.
24:38 And the reason is because it doesn't resolve. It never resolves. You start off in c, you're playing in c, you go to g, that's a perfectly normal chord progression, and then you go to a minor. I'm nervous as can be. And it does that for seven minutes.
25:24 Okay? Imagine that. Y'all can hear it in your head now. Alright? Good.
25:29 Keep on concentrating on that. Just the sound of that, though. Because it doesn't resolve, I want you to think about that. We are today finishing up the book of James, and I'm saying it's a musical Mother's Day summary. It's been what's ringing in my ears for several days, and I've been studying the book of James.
25:50 Y'all been studying with me for six weeks, seven weeks, something like that. We skipped over Easter and when I got to Mother's Day, I thought, like I said before, what do you do for Mother's Day? Do I skip what I'm preaching on and find something, you know, Proverbs 31 or maybe another particular Mother's Day greatest hit or should we stick with where we are in the word and go forward and I think we should do that. So, James five thirteen through 20. He has so many imperatives.
26:15 We've been mentioning that since the beginning. A 140 something imperatives in the book of James and when I look back through, I found that they fell into these qualifications or categories. They are imperatives of encouragement, strengthen your hearts, like we said last week, or count it all joy, exhortation, be ye not hearers of the word only, but doers. Warning, oh to you, rich, come now, weep and mourn. Or for those who are practicing favoritism, he has very strong warnings.
26:57 And challenge. Those are the four general classifications. I haven't brought them up exactly like this in our study, because each time we hit them, we mention it, but this is what it's about. So who else does that sound like? Giving you direct commands that are encouraging, exhorting, warning, or challenging.
27:15 Who does that sound like? My mother. That is Linda Sue Pike McDaniel. That's a picture on her phone. I asked her to send me a selfie, and she didn't know what that was.
27:31 And I've comic booked it a little bit, and she didn't like the picture anyway, but I'm used to it anyway. Linda Sue McDaniel, she is all love, five feet tall. If you ask anybody who she is or what she's about, they will say, Sweet and Precious. It's a normal thing for people to call my mama sweet and precious. Sweet Sue.
27:49 She is always ready with an encouraging word. No matter how hard that word may be. Not, she is always ready with that. James is exactly the same way. I had never realized it.
28:02 I've got up here and almost, if not, completely apologize for James for the past six sermons. I've been taking some off of what he's been saying and I I don't want to do that because he's given us loving advice just like a mama. He is still in Jerusalem when he's writing this but he's writing it to the 12 tribes in the diaspora, Jewish background, Christians. He knows what it's like. They grew up in the same family.
28:29 He is ahead of them. In that, he has this wisdom directly from God. It's considered to be canonical and I think absolutely so. It's it's in the Bible. You can trust that this is truth.
28:45 And when he's writing it to him, he's writing it just like a mother would to her young child. Is anyone among you suffering? Verse 13 says, well, let him pray. Oh my goodness. My mama says, is it bothering you?
28:59 Yes. Well, pray about it, right? I can hear her saying it, you know? The thing on the refrigerator, some of y'all on Monday night heard read a while back that was worry or pray. Why worry?
29:10 What can worry do? Nothing. Only ruin everything you say or do but pray. Yeah, praying makes a difference. So, if any of you among you is suffering, let him pray.
29:21 Is anyone cheerful? Well, let him sing songs. Let's sing a song. I can hear her saying that right now and that's what James is saying. He's serious about it.
29:30 If you are sad, upset, suffering, by all means, pray. Call out to God. He listens to you. He cares for you. If anybody's cheerful, let him sing psalms about it.
29:41 There's a there's a proverb that says, let the Psalm that says, let the redeemed of the Lord say so. Out loud proclaim it Speak of his name among the congregation and among the people Is anyone among you sick? Let him call for the elders of the church and let them pray over him anointing him with oil in the name of the Lord. When I looked at this one this week, I looked at it and I thought, I'm not considered this before. As a minister now and a pastor, when somebody goes into the hospital, I think, oh, I need to go see him.
30:15 I need to go visit him and that's good. That's that's great. I think that's good for your pastor to feel that way. But I think that it's interesting that James puts the onus on the sick person. Is anyone among you sick?
30:31 It says, let him call. Not his great aunt. That's fine. Don't get me wrong. We have people that write to church weekly probably.
30:41 More than I see some of them. Diane sees tons of them. We have people weekly that say, hey, my daughter just moved out there and she's she used to go to church. Would y'all watch out for her? Can you get the elders to go visit her?
30:54 Like, why don't you call your daughter and see if she wants us to come visit her? If any of you is sick or suffering, let them pray. If they're cheerful, let them sing psalms. Is anyone among you sick? Let him call the elders of the church and let them pray over him.
31:10 Anointing him with oil in the name of the Lord. Now, if you call upon us as elders of the church, we will come and we'll pray for you. That's what we're going to do. The anointing with the oil seems a little weird for some of us but you know what? We'll do that too.
31:24 That's the truth. This is the biblical prescription for healing. It is. This is the only biblical prescription for healing. It says, let him call the elders of the church and let them pray over him, anointing him with oil in the name of the Lord.
31:41 I don't think the oil is magical but when the elders who are dedicated to God come together and they pray over someone, that's what God says to do. And the prayer of faith will save the sick and the Lord will raise him up and if he has committed sins, he will be forgiven. I think I had put in there. Yeah, verse 16, I I used two different versions. New King James and the English Standard.
32:10 16 says, confess your trespasses that is sins to one another and pray for one another that you may be healed. The effective fervent prayer of a righteous man avails much. The ESV says, therefore, confess your sins to one another and pray for one another. So far so good. It's about the same that you may be healed, same there.
32:34 The prayer of a righteous person has a great power as it is working. The hospital bed with the anointing oil is not always gonna bam, make that person better. But I tell you what, the prayers of people who have dedicated themselves to the Lord, the prayers of those people during that time will be working. It'll be working on the peep on those elders. It'll be working on the one in the bed.
33:06 If God chooses to heal him, praise God. Glory be. May no man ever take any credit for that but it's interesting that it says, the prayer of the righteous person has great power as it is working. I like that translation.
33:22 I
33:22 think both of em are good translations but it was a new way of thinking about it for me. And then he gives an example of a prayer of faith. Renzi, is the microphone just going crazy because of where I'm sitting or what? Yeah, sorry about that. Elijah was a man with a nature just like ours and he prayed earnestly that it would not rain and it did not rain on the land for three years and six months and he prayed again and the heavens gave rain and the earth produced its fruit.
33:52 So, he's given an example of that prayer of faith. There are two more verses left and we'll come back to those towards the end of this talk. I almost hesitate to call it a sermon. As I was considering James and thinking about how I had kind of been taken off going, oh, that's hard. That's really hard preaching.
34:13 Like it was not good for us. It's good for us. My mother taught me tons of things, tons of things that I just they still ring in my ears and not in a bad way. I I texted her yesterday and I said, you're always whispering in my ear. Make me a better man and a better servant of God.
34:37 And stuff she doesn't remember. Doesn't even know anything about probably but I know it and it rings in my ears because it's repetitive and it's unresolved. Can't do that little part, Carl. You should do that part. That that ringing in my ears and that going on in its unresolved nature made me think of this song.
35:16 And I know it's ridiculous to bring up Leonard Skynyrd in church. But I am from Georgia, a child of the seventies, and it's something that I kind of inherited my musical taste from my uncles who grew up closer to the time this band was popular than I did but I wouldn't sing every single song that they ever sang in church but this one, I think bears repeating and there's a reason for it. Actually, the guy who wrote this, the two guys that wrote this song, one of them died in the car, a plane crash and the other one lives here in Jackson. The guitar player lives in Kelly actually. Ossington, yeah.
35:56 So, let me see if this goes. Mama told, wait a second. Let me cable this thing up.
36:04 Here we go, Carl.
36:08 I went to a church one time where they started the service and the call to worship was superstition by Stevie Wonder. And I quit going to that church. So, please, listen to the words because I think they mimic and echo exactly what James is saying.
36:31 My mama told me when I was young Come sit beside me, my only son, and listen closely to what I say and if you do this it'll help you some sunny day
37:05 So, that's the first verse. Let every man be swift to hear, slow to speak, slow to wrath. It's Mother's Day. Mama has given this advice. James has given us this advice.
37:16 If you hadn't read James in its entirety since we started this, go home this afternoon and read James all the way through. Just one time. Read it all the way through and think, this is mama's advice. It's good advice.
37:32 And be a simple kind of man be something you love and understand my baby be a simple kind of man I want to do this for myself if you can Or take your time. Don't live too fast. Troubles will come, and they will pass.
38:19 Find a
38:19 woman worthy you'll find love and don't forget the sun there is someone up above
38:36 it goes on. That there's so much of James in that verse. There's a little bit of Paul in there too. James doesn't mention finding a woman and finding love. My brother encountered all joy when you fall into various trials, knowing that the testing of your faith produces patience, but let patience have its perfect work that you may be perfect and complete lack in nothing.
38:56 Blessed is the man who endures temptation. For when he has been approved, he will receive the crown of life which the Lord has promised to those who love him. Do not be deceived, my beloved brethren. Every good and perfect gift is from above comes down from the father of lights with whom there's no shadow of turning. That's wonderful.
39:13 That's good advice. Don't forget son. There's someone up above. I'm taking this to mean that this mama knows that her boy is already a Christian. He's accepted Christ.
39:22 Don't forget that. Don't walk away from what you already know. Don't give that up. And be as simple
39:32 kind of man I'll be something you love not staying baby be a simple kind of man oh won't you do this for me son if you can next Forget your lust
40:01 for the rich man's gold.
40:05 All that you need is in your soul and you can do this if you try
40:20 all that I want for
40:22 you my son is to be satisfied
40:27 when he's speaking to us, we've said that he only mentions the Holy Spirit one time in five chapters. James does not over spiritualize life. If anything, he under spiritualizes it and he puts the onus on us to do something about it. Does your mama do the same thing? Mine did.
40:47 She was like, pray as if everything depended on God but go for it like everything depended on you. Go for it. Trusting that his spirit will lead and his grace will cover. My brethren, don't hold the faith of our Lord Jesus Christ, the Lord of glory with partiality. If there should come into your assembly man with gold rings and fine apparel and there should also come in a poor man in filthy clothes.
41:11 You pay attention to the one wearing fine clothes and say to him, you sit down here in good place and say to the poor man, you stand there, sit here at my footstool. Have you not shown partiality among yourselves and become judges with evil thoughts? Listen, my beloved brethren. Has God not chosen the poor of the world to be rich in faith and heirs of the kingdom which he promised to those who love him? But you have dishonored the poor man.
41:35 Do not the rich oppress you and drag you into courts? Do they not blaspheme that noble name by which you were called? James, Leonard Skinner would say, forget your lust. What's weird is I looked this the the words up on, I don't know how many different sites to see what they were guessing because some of it southern slurs. I understood them perfectly.
41:57 It says, forget your lust. And three of those different sites said, get get your lust for the rich man's go. Go for it. That's a complete misinterpretation. He's saying, money is not what you're going after.
42:10 Just be a simple man. Believe what it is that you believe and go for it. Follow your heart. Nothing else.
42:19 Boy, don't you worry. You'll find yourself. Follow your heart and nothing else if Jesus isn't it. You can do this if you try
42:42 All that I
42:43 want for you, my son, is to be satisfied and be a simple kind of man or be something love and understand baby be a simple kind of man
43:19 So that's ringing in my ears. It's hopefully, it's ringing in yours now too. I want to talk really quickly about a couple of musical things. I started off with this. The one, four, and five, actually, one, four, and five are the chords that make a song.
43:38 Normally, in music, there are at least three chords in a song, normally. One, four, and five are the traditional kind of western ways of going about things. Every hymn in our hymn book has those three chords. I mean, it's like G, C, and D, you learn those, you can play the song, the Baptist Hymnal. But, and we do, don't we?
44:00 That's what we do. For resolution, all three of those chords should be present at some point. The two and the six chords are usually minors. They can add a bit of darkness or mystery. When you played Amazing Grace, it's like this.
44:12 Amazing grace, how sweet the sound that saved the rest like me.
44:23 I once
44:25 was lost, but now I'm found was
44:32 That's a minor chord. Blind. It's like dark. Now I see brings it back around to cheerful. Does that make sense?
44:42 This is why it's ringing in my ears. I'm a lateral thinker. I admit it again. This song has the one and the four but never has a five. It has an element of darkness and mystery because instead of going to the five, it goes to the six, the minor.
44:57 How does it resolve? It doesn't resolve. This young man's life or whoever would take this advice, that's how this song is resolved. That's what I've awakened with every morning this week is that your mom's advice, James's advice, only matters in your life if you take it. Does that make sense?
45:21 It only makes a difference in your life if you take it. If you read scripture and it is condemning you, instead of helping you, back up. See what it is that you're ignoring. See what it is that you're ignoring. Therefore, there is no condemnation for those who are in Christ Jesus.
45:43 The Holy Spirit is sent to convict us of our sin and to convince us of God's righteousness and there is no condemnation. So, if you read James and it's condemning you, then something's wrong. He is spurring us on. He is saying, be a simple kind of man. Have a simple faith.
46:03 Look to God for your answers, and don't go after the things of this world. Just be a simple man. Now, whether he took his advice or not, y'all talk to him. He lives in Kelly. But they did have another song that said, don't ask me no questions and I won't tell you no lies.
46:15 So, anyway, I couldn't get away from this this week and I and I was surprised at how it does just kind of resonate to and I play the bass part, so it's even simpler than that. May our lives be that fifth chord, that thing that causes our mother's advice to resolve. Now, I know not all of us have a great and loving earthly father, earthly mother that gave good advice, but in the Bible, we do find that same type of advice. Carl, would you come on up and we're going to talk about what a friend we have in Jesus, I think, and the actual scripture for the day, I know that I went through it rather quickly, but the praying and the prayer of faith, oh what peace we often forfeit. Oh, what needless pain we bear.
47:10 It's in here. Y'all stand with us and sing if you would. Oh, you need a guitar.
48:03 It ready. How we try and temptations can raise
49:50 Lord bless and keep you and your mama and make this face to shine upon you both and give you peace. In Jesus name, amen.
