Be Persuaded by Those Leading You

Watch or read it

In one paragraph

Pastor Ray worked through Hebrews 13:17, a single verse he described as not easy for the congregation and not easy for him. He was careful to explain both sides of what the verse asks, laying out what faithful leadership looks like and what a healthy response to it looks like. The verse sits inside a longer section of practical instruction that closes the book of Hebrews. The original readers were...

Talk about it

  1. Pastor Ray described Hebrews 13:17 as a passage that 'has been used to beat people up and keep them in line.' What do you think makes this verse easy to misuse, and how does understanding the Greek word for 'obey' as 'be persuaded of that which is true' change how you hear it?
  2. The sermon pointed out that the word translated 'obey' is rooted in persuasion, and that the Holy Spirit is active in persuading the believer toward truth. How have you experienced that kind of inner persuasion in your own walk, and how do you weigh it alongside the teaching you receive from church leadership?
  3. Pastor Ray read from Ezekiel 3 about the watchman who must give an account to God for whether he delivered the warning faithfully. How does knowing that your church leaders carry that kind of accountability change the way you think about your relationship with them?
  4. The sermon said the report to God becomes grievous, described as 'groaning,' not because of a tattle-tale dynamic but because rejected godly counsel is unprofitable for the person who rejects it. Can you think of a time, in your own life or in scripture, where refusing good and biblical counsel proved costly?
  5. Pastor Ray closed with James 5's reminder that teachers incur a stricter judgment and that 'we all stumble in many ways.' How does that mutual humility, leaders accountable to God, and members yielding to good teaching, shape what a healthy church community actually looks like in practice?
