Bear Much Fruit

September 25, 2016

Scripture referenced 2 passages

The passage this message was preached from, in full, with every other passage it reached for.

  • John 15:8 Norris quoted it to ground his fruit-bearing criteria for selecting leaders: 'By this is my Father glorified, that you bear much fruit and so prove to be my disciples.'

8 “In this is my Father glorified, that you bear much fruit; and so you will be my disciples.

Romans 13

Norris cited it to explain the biblical basis for a national response to refugees, distinct from a personal one.

1 Let every soul be in subjection to the higher authorities, for there is no authority except from God, and those who exist are ordained by God.

2 Therefore he who resists the authority, withstands the ordinance of God; and those who withstand will receive to themselves judgment.

3 For rulers are not a terror to the good work, but to the evil. Do you desire to have no fear of the authority? Do that which is good, and you will have praise from the same,

4 for he is a servant of God to you for good. But if you do that which is evil, be afraid, for he doesn’t bear the sword in vain; for he is a servant of God, an avenger for wrath to him who does evil.

5 Therefore you need to be in subjection, not only because of the wrath, but also for conscience’ sake.

6 For this reason you also pay taxes, for they are servants of God’s service, attending continually on this very thing.

7 Therefore give everyone what you owe: if you owe taxes, pay taxes; if customs, then customs; if respect, then respect; if honor, then honor.

8 Owe no one anything, except to love one another; for he who loves his neighbor has fulfilled the law.

9 For the commandments, “You shall not commit adultery,” “You shall not murder,” “You shall not steal,” “You shall not covet,” and whatever other commandments there are, are all summed up in this saying, namely, “You shall love your neighbor as yourself.”

10 Love doesn’t harm a neighbor. Love therefore is the fulfillment of the law.

11 Do this, knowing the time, that it is already time for you to awaken out of sleep, for salvation is now nearer to us than when we first believed.

12 The night is far gone, and the day is near. Let’s therefore throw off the deeds of darkness, and let’s put on the armor of light.

13 Let us walk properly, as in the day; not in reveling and drunkenness, not in sexual promiscuity and lustful acts, and not in strife and jealousy.

14 But put on the Lord Jesus Christ, and make no provision for the flesh, for its lusts.

Recap

The message in order, in a few minutes of reading.

This was not a traditional sermon but a ministry report and appeal from Norris Williams, a long-term missionary supported by First B Jackson, who spoke about the disciple-making movement work he leads through Church Resource Ministries. Norris described what God is doing among Muslims, refugees, disabled people, and others across the Middle East, Africa, and Eurasia through ordinary people making disciples who make more disciples. He also shared how that same approach is beginning to take root in the United States.

What was said

Norris opened by grounding everything in a simple problem: the great commission calls every follower of Jesus to make disciples, but most believers are not doing it. He pointed to the early church as the model, arguing that what spread the gospel in the first century was not organization or resources but ordinary people obeying Jesus and passing on what they had learned to others in their natural networks. He called this a disciple-making movement, and said the engine of it is a discovery Bible study built around three questions: what does the passage say, what does it mean, and what will I do in response, followed by asking who else can I tell so another group can start.

He then described what this looks like on the ground. In Lebanon's Beqa Valley, a Sunni Muslim tribal chief with 13,000 people under him came to faith and opened a school where a thousand children, all from Muslim families, are now doing discovery Bible studies and going home to tell their parents what they are learning. In Southern Beirut, a contact is running Bible studies among Hezbollah fighters. A Syrian refugee woman named Miram set a goal to start 50 new discovery groups in a year and hit it by February, after which she and her team began starting one new group every week.

Norris shared several accounts of God healing people in the midst of this work, including his own shoulder being healed by a Syrian refugee woman in Beirut after his surgeon had told him he needed surgery. He described a disabled girl in Egypt, seven years old and never having spoken or stood, who stood up and spoke the word "papa" in the middle of a meeting after her father came to faith. He was careful to frame these not as spectacles but as signs that accompanied ordinary obedience.

He used his own cherry and apricot farming as an extended picture of what fruitful discipleship requires. A cherry tree, he explained, does not naturally produce fruit. It has to be trained, its branches bent and anchored, its suckers pruned away every year. The same is true for disciple makers. Producing fruit is hard relational work, done together, not something that happens on its own.

When describing the leaders his team looks for, Norris said humility is the first quality. He looks for people who are not trying to build their own ministry, who are willing to give leadership away, who would do the work even if there were no pay, and who are willing to die to see the kingdom grow. He said money functions as a litmus test: when people learn there is no funding attached, those who were only interested in a job disappear, leaving the ones who genuinely want to see the kingdom spread.

He closed with results: 35,000 new churches across East, West, and North Africa in seven years, thousands more in Southern Africa, Eurasia, and the Middle East, and between 500,000 and 600,000 new believers, at a cost of roughly $20 per baptism. He mentioned that a retired Egyptian police officer had prophesied over him about twelve years ago that a global movement and a voice among nations was coming, something he said he kept to himself for five years because it seemed too large. He ended by saying that what he once could not imagine is now visibly happening, and that similar movements are beginning in cities across the United States.

Doing a Bible study?

Here is a guide we have prepared for you: the passages in order, questions for the group, and room to write.

  1. Norris described two separate biblical responses to refugees, a national one and a personal one, and said his job is to love and serve those God brings his way. How do you think about that distinction in your own life, and where do you see your responsibility falling?
  2. The Discovery Bible Study format asks three questions: what does the passage say, what does it mean, and what will I do in response, followed by who can I tell so another group can start. What would change about how you read the Bible if obedience and sharing were built into the process every time?

0:36 I'm gonna start with the song Jesus name above all names. Yesterday when I was practicing, another song came in my brain. I don't know. I don't know the name of the song. So I kind of blend them together.
0:46 So please have mercy on me. Okay? Do you remember what I said one time, I always mess up chorus songs? So this is my job. But will you please, please worship with me.
0:56 Amen? If you know the song Sing with all your heart. If you don't, just close your eyes and feel God's presence in this place. Amen? Amen.

4:01 have a few announcements for you this morning and actually I have I'm going to invite somebody up to do another announcement. Awana is happening on Monday nights at 06:00 right here in this room is where they start out. So, kids matter to God and so, beginning, it began a couple weeks ago. This is the third week of it. Please come on in.
4:21 Don't feel like you're late. Come on in. If you're a child and if you bring a child and you want to come on down the hall, Monday nights at First B are happening down the hallway there. Middle school youth group is Thursdays at 06:30. High school breakfast is Friday morning at 07:45.
4:39 Renzi is making breakfast for high school kids and giving a kind of a blessing before the weekend. That's always fun. Four high schools and and middle school students. There's a girl study today that happens during the connect hour which is at 10:00. So, from ten to eleven downstairs in the library for the young ladies, high school, middle school girls and for the guys, it's happening during the during this service, during 09:30 to 10:30 downstairs in Renzy's office.
5:07 So, that's a guy study today during the sermon part up here. Peak Children's Church also is happening today and that happens right at the the sermon break after the songs and Monday nights at First B. Like I said, is there anything else? Yes, there's one more thing. Anne, would you like to jump up here?
5:25 And there is a slide up there about the promises of heaven that change everything and here's your mic.
5:32 Good morning, everybody. My name is Ann Stalker and I have the privilege of being a part of a team of ladies who are putting together a fun, wonderful, thought provoking retreat. There is a flyer in each of your bulletins so all the details are there if you take a moment to take a look. So today marks the first of three Sundays that we're kicking off to register women for this retreat. It's gonna take place at Heart 6, which is about fifty minutes north of here.
6:03 So, there's gonna be a table right out there after the service. You can also sign up online or you can call the church office. And in between services, there's a slideshow so those who went last year can be reminded how wonderful it was or you can just get a sneak preview of what it may be like. So I hope you take a moment to watch it. So officially we have three people signed up for the retreat.
6:26 I'm one of them. And so today, I hope that we have about 50 ladies or so who sign up. That would be great. So my hope is that we will widen and deepen our friendships and our sense of community. I hope that we can focus on intentional Christian living in the light of the knowledge of biblical promises of heaven.
6:50 So I'm hoping at the conclusion of the retreat that you may find your joy is fuller, your hope is bigger, your gratitude is deeper and your compassion is increased. For you see, heaven changes everything. So, please sign up today, bring your check because without you, our retreat will not be complete. Thanks. Amen.
7:20 Amen. And for everything else, there may be another announcement or two that I have completely forgotten. I wanna say this though, the band, we went to Denver this weekend and saw a concert. Stephen Curtis Chapman, Mac Powell, and Brandon Heath and so we are here to worship this morning. We had a great great time.
7:40 So, would you stand up and greet one another and we'll bring you back together with a
7:43 peppy peppy song. Let's sing another song, my Jesus, I love thee. I love him so much. Thank you, Jesus. Amen.
11:35 You church sing so beautiful. It's so great to be here, honestly. I I I can feel the Holy Spirit in this place. Amen. There's a land that is fairer than they, and by faith we can see it afar.
11:50 Amen. What a beautiful hope. You're gonna enjoy this song. There's a land that is fairer than day. Amen.
14:23 I feel like I wanna sing one more time, but no. I think I choose this this song because the word of God is so important to our life. The Bible is the only way we can have a little bit of understanding of God. So thy word is the lamp into my feet and the light into my path.
16:58 Amen. Would you pray with me? God, I thank you for the opportunity that we have to worship, lord. You're amazing. After crossing eight or ten hours of driving yesterday and looking at this beautiful land that you that you placed us in.
17:19 God, I thank you for bringing us to this moment. I thank you that you care for us, that you provide, that you love, that you offer your love through us to others, to be able to see what's going on around us, lord, that you're on the move is amazing. So, God, I pray that you would use us that we would get a glimpse, lord. But whether we see it or not, lord, we want to surrender our lives to you, our resources to you. So, God right now, we want to acknowledge that you're the one.
17:54 You're the one and your kingdom is the one and we want to give and so lord, would you accept these tithes and offerings? Would you accept it? Lord, and do your kingdom's work. We trust you. Would you do it the way that you would do it?
18:11 In Jesus name, amen. Now, before the music starts and before these plates pass, I forgot to mention this. We do have Norris Williams who's speaking this morning. He's going to come up and talk and we're going to take two offerings. We're going to take two offerings not because we don't get enough the first time around, okay?
18:29 We are going to take two and this one will be just a normal general fund. If you came today and you just brought one check and it's already prepared, wait, give it to Norris at the end, okay? We're gonna take up after you've heard him speak. We're gonna take up an offering for the work that they're doing with Church Resource Ministries but this is gonna be the the general fund offering when the plates pass this time, okay? Does that make sense to you?
18:52 It's as clunky as I've ever done that, I think, but lord, would you please bless? In Jesus name, amen. First b has been first b has been supporting Norris and helping out. And Norris has been here much, much longer than I have. So I think a lot of y'all are gonna know who he is.
21:31 Thank you kids for doing what you do and people who teach them for even more for that. So, I'm gonna click this and there should be a video that comes up and then Norris will come up after that. I'm glad you're here, brother.
21:48 The last thing Jesus told his disciples to do was to go everywhere and teach everyone to obey everything he asked them to do. But how? How were 11 uneducated and unsophisticated Jewish men supposed to make disciples in all the different cultures and languages of the world. They had no money, no power, no organization, and no leader. And to make matters worse, they were outcasts in their own society and religion.
22:20 The disciples didn't seem to have anything and yet they changed everything. What they did have was a life changing experience with Jesus, a willingness to simply obey, the power of the Holy Spirit. Oh, yes. And lots of contacts. What we call today a social network.
22:41 Here's what happened. Everything started with prayer. Then came the power of the Holy Spirit at Pentecost. After Pentecost, people visiting Jerusalem from far away places went home and told their friends and family what God had done. And when those people passed on what they had experienced, the good news about Jesus spread like wildfire.
23:03 Post Pentecost social networking is how the gospel went viral. That was over two thousand years ago. So how are we doing today? There is some good news and some not so good news. The good news, the number of Christians is increasing.
23:19 The not so good news, the percentage of Christians is stuck. So what's the problem and how can we solve it? The biggest issue seems to be that not all believers in Jesus are actually obedient followers of Jesus. The main job of being a disciple of Jesus is to make more disciples but not many people are doing that today. In the first century what created a spiritual revolution was disciples making disciples who made disciples.
23:47 Dozens became hundreds, hundreds became thousands And before too long, thousands had multiplied to millions. All because ordinary people simply obeyed what Jesus told them to do and taught those who responded to do the same. We think this is an idea whose time has come again. We call it disciple making movements or DMM for short. It's a movement because it can multiply naturally.
24:14 So how do you start a disciple making movement? It's actually very simple. The engine is what we call a discovery Bible Study. Here's how a Discovery Bible Study works. As God reveals a leader within a community, a disciple making coach helps them to form a group from among their friends and family.
24:32 The group starts a process of direct interaction with God's Word. The format is simple. What does the passage say? What does it mean? What will I do in response?
24:43 And finally, who can I tell so another group can start? Personal discovery, immediate obedience and consistent replication are the launching pad for new movements. Every individual has a unique circle of influence. No two are exactly alike but everybody's circle overlaps with many others. The intersection points are where movements take off.
25:06 No matter what country, language or culture, people share what is important to them with those they care about. Normally when we dream about the future we want to leave behind the old and embrace the new. But perhaps as we reimagine how to complete the great commission, we need to go back to how it all began. The early followers of Jesus turned the world upside down through simple obedience and natural networking. We're watching the same thing happen today for a million new followers of Jesus who joined the mosaic of nations, tribes, and tongues around the throne through our DMM process.
25:43 That's a lot of disciples. Over 400,000 of these are Muslims who fell in love with Jesus. We believe that this is just the start of what God wants to do through unleashing the power of disciple making movements. As it was in the beginning, it will be until the end. Ordinary people multiplying disciples in their natural networks is God's plan to complete the great commission.
26:10 Disciple making movements, an idea whose time has come again.
26:20 Good morning. It's my honor to be here again. It feels like coming home. Some of you may remember me if you bought fruit from me or my children. We used to come and have the cherry fruit stand and sold cherries and peaches and apricots down on the road.
26:38 That's how my kids went to school, went to college. Now that they're gone, we sell our cherries locally. It's a we don't make the drive, but we've been here a long time in this area. My sister Lane and my brother Norris, just it's always good to be here. This is my wife, Lori, who's here with me this time as well and we've been married thirty six years.
27:03 We have four children and five grandchildren now and one more on the way. Mid missionaries since 1983. When we went on to the mission field, my father was alive then and he told us, you know, you're gonna go out and do your mission work and there are gonna be people that go to work every day and work really hard and they're gonna send you some of their money. He goes, there's no excuse for laziness as a missionary and you gotta produce something and there needs to be a return on their investment And that has has guided us all of our mission life for, thirty three years now. If if what we're doing is not producing fruit, we stop doing it, and we start doing something else.
27:54 No no business can survive unless they they have a bottom line and you gotta be producing something towards that bottom line. For us, it's discipleship. Making disciples who make more disciples. For the last fourteen years, I've been traveling in and out of The Middle East, Africa, Eurasia, launching these types of movements. That's my role within CRM.
28:18 I lead the team called Accelerate and we accelerate gospel movement movements around the world. And we find the national leaders, the ordinary men and women, who are those that reproduce, and you're gonna meet a few of them. Some people wonder where refugees come from. Here's a picture of one city that was under siege for a long time and as the siege broke, this was the view of people leaving those buildings and scattering. And you know that I get asked this question a lot.
28:57 Versus a personal response versus a national response to refugees. And I wanna I wanna tell you how we deal with this. We believe biblically there's an a national response and you can read about it in Romans 13. There are reasons that people are appointed to roles for nations, for cities. And there's a biblical response to protect the people of that city and that nation.
29:23 Now, I don't have one of those jobs. I'm not the leader of a of a city or a I'm not the governor of a state. I'm not the president. There's a biblical response that's national but then there's also the biblical response that's personal and even if I have a national role, if a refugee moves in next to me, my biblical response is to love my neighbor. No matter who that neighbor is.
29:51 And what the the problem that happens is we take the national response and we try to make it our personal response. And you and and neither can you take the personal response and make it the national. They're two separate things. And some people actually have both roles in their life. I don't.
30:10 My job is to love and serve those that God brings our way. So, we've seen an influx of these refugees into Lebanon where I look work a lot and we're we're seeing tremendous growth. Here's some of those refugees. These are these are Bedouin children in the Baka Valley. The chief of this tribe is a Sunni Muslim.
30:33 He has 13,000 Sunnis. He's now a believer and he's he just this year, there's over a thousand new kids in his school. And he is doing discovery Bible study with all of these students. Guess what? The homework assignment is in a discovery Bible study.
30:49 You saw it up there. Who are you going to tell about what you learned about God? So, now, these thousand students which are all Muslim are going back into their homes telling their parents what they learned about God in school. That school is their only option. So, the parents aren't pulling them out of school and we're seeing thousands of families come to know Christ because of the work with these children.
31:13 This is what some of the churches look like. Some of the churches are led by women. Some of them are led by former Muslims. Some of them are led by taxi drivers. Some of them are led by garbage collectors.
31:28 Some of them are led by former prostitutes. Ordinary people that God is reaching. And what we look for are leaders that are willing to replicate and obey, and this is what some of the churches are looking like. You can't build a building there. It's illegal to build a church building in most of these places.
31:49 So this is how the churches replicate from house to house. This is a group of men. They're all Hezbollah fighters. Hezbollah is the terrorist arm of Iran and that's a Shiite. When you hear Hamas, that's Sunni.
32:05 Hezbollah is is Shia. And these guys are all employed by Hezbollah. The guy in the striped shirt is our contact there. We don't go there. He actually comes and gets training with us because we can't go there.
32:19 You understand? Only he can go there and he's starting these Bible studies amongst Hezbollah in Southern Beirut. This is some of the Syrian women last year. This time, I was hunting with my son in Oregon and came off a horse, dislocated my shoulder, tore the bicep, all the ligaments. It was Zach's horse, cotton picking thing and my I left for Beirut and the day before I left, the surgeon who I know personally because I have both hips are fake and both knees are fake and I have steel rods in my back.
33:00 So I am really a man of steel. I have steel everywhere. And, he's been inside of me a lot. His name is Mark. We're on first name basis with your surgeon.
33:10 You know you've been there too much. And so, he says, yeah, he did an MRI. He says, all your tendons are torn, your bicep was detached, and I couldn't reach out and pick up my Bible and pick it up like this. He goes, you're gonna have, we're gonna have to go in and repair that. So, I'm in Beirut that two days later and I'm with these Syrian women who are leading, you know, we're just doing training and one of the women comes up to me and says, I think I'm supposed to pray for your shoulder.
33:39 I said, well, let's do it. You know, and so, when she put her hand on my shoulder, it felt like a block of ice. She started praying and my arm just started moving. Snapping. Bicep reattached.
33:51 Tendons reattaching right before my eyes. So, I I come back and I'm home and I meet my surgeon and he says, well, tell me about your trip and I said, well, Mark, I'm sitting there. I I said, you know, I saw God healing people. Just ordinary people praying for each other and God healing them and I and then I start moving my arm and I said, I think God healed me and he goes, woah, woah. I don't.
34:16 Now, Mark's not a Christian. See? So, I was telling him all about this. So, he goes, well, something happened and so he did some more examination and he said, well, I don't know what happened Norris but something happened and you're hanging around the right people, he said. And we're not gonna have to do surgery.
34:35 So, we can't make it any better than it is right now. So, that was a year ago, you know? And It was these ladies here who who were praying for me and they're all refugees. Some of them don't have husbands. They've been killed.
34:51 Some of them have been raped. Some of their daughters have been raped. Their sons have been killed. And instead of shaking their fist at God saying, God, you didn't come through for me. They're saying, God was with me through all of this hell on earth that I went through which is what really what he promises.
35:07 Right? The idea that God loves you and has a wonderful plan for your life. I never say that anymore because sometimes the plan is not that wonderful. What he really promises in the world, you're gonna have tribulation. You will share in my sufferings, but I'll never leave you or forsake you.
35:27 And that's the testimony you hear from these folks is that Jesus never leaves them or forsakes them. This guy here is one of the first guys I started training fourteen years ago. His name is Bassam. He's an insurance salesman. And now this insurance salesman has over a thousand families that are in his network of people that have come to know the Lord.
35:53 A thousand of them or and more. And every time I see him, he says, look what you started. He says, and he he he has this sheet and it's all in pencil because he we can't do it electronically because it puts these people in danger. And he has all their names, all their families. And this gal here, her she comes from a from a family that's in Isis.
36:13 And that night, as we prayed, she was praying that she said, the Lord has given me courage and I'm starting to to talk to my brother and tell him what I'm learning about God and I really believe that God's gonna deliver him out of Isis and just so much courage. You know, you get around these people and it changes you. Fundamentally changes you inside who you are and you stop taking pride in the wrong things. I have no more pride in my accomplishments, education, nothing because when you get around women like this, it's a humbling thing, truly. And you'll do whatever you can to help them to succeed because they're willing to pay the price every day.
36:56 In this picture here, two of these men are already dead. They've been killed. The woman was divorced by her husband. And the other one was shot. These these are all Jordanians.
37:09 We do mobile baptisms, take pools, different places, and, people start baptizing each other. And we actually got in trouble with the existing church in Lebanon because we would allow people to baptize themselves and they got mad at us because they said, no, only pastors can baptize. And we said, well, there's not enough pastors to baptize. How many thousands are getting coming to know the Lord? And so now, some of these churches that were in opposition to us at the beginning are now they've come and they've received this training and now they have more people involved in groups outside their church than actually come to church because they've changed their vision.
38:03 They're no longer trying to grow their church. Because really growing a church is kind of a small vision. And when they come to us, can you help us grow our church? We say, no. There's lots of people that can help you grow your church.
38:18 But if you want to start a movement, we'll help you do that. And a movement grows way beyond the church. And guess what? Their church grows as a as a natural byproduct of now focusing on growing the kingdom. We had one pastor.
38:32 His name is Hechmad, highly intelligent life form. I mean, he speaks like seven languages, reads Aramaic, Hebrew, Greek. And when he first saw what we were doing, he said, no, that's not how we do church. He was the academic dean of the Arab Baptist Theological Seminary and was the pastor of a church. And so then he saw these thousands of people coming to know the Lord in the Beqaa Valley, which is on your way to Syria.
39:02 So he comes to us, says, okay, what's happening out there? He said, I wanna know more. And then he came and got the training. Now, at the beginning of last year, he saw what was happening with the people in his church and he actually stood up in his pulpit and he said, okay, if you're not involved in these discovery groups, either leading them or involved in them outside the church, you can no longer come to church here. Now, I'm not advocating that pastor.
39:30 I'm not saying to do that. I'm just telling you what he did because he said, church is no longer about you coming and listening to me talk. They still do that but church is about mobilizing these people to actually impact their world and now, he has 10 times the number of people involved in these groups outside the church and actually come to church on Sunday. It's just a different way of looking at it. I and I want you know I'm a church boy.
39:59 I go to church every Sunday. I was going raised in the church. I will still go to church. I love the church. I'm not saying anything against what is.
40:08 But what I'm telling you is there's more. There's more. It's happening. And these groups are multiplying and churches are multiplying by the thousands in ordinary people around the world. This is a group of disabled people in Egypt and this is the this is something only God could do.
40:29 We have movements happening amongst disabled people and in Egypt, disabled people are outcast. They're they're not even considered human. One family This was a Muslim family and they had a disabled daughter who had never spoken, had never walked, had never even stood up. She was just this a mass of bones that was crumpled up in the corner and they would feed her, change her. The people in the village didn't even know she existed because it was a shame to have a a girl like this.
41:08 So they kept her covered in a blanket. When the husband, he he was angry. Every night, he would slap his wife around. Every night, he gets to he meets one of our disciple makers in Cairo. God takes him through a Bible study and we always ask not what you learn but what are you going to do, right?
41:34 Obedience, our love language to God is obedience. It's not knowledge. If you love me, you'll obey me. So, the obedience statement from this guy, you know what it was? I'm I won't beat my wife tonight.
41:46 Well, that was something to applaud. Right? He it was it was progress. So, as he gets home, his wife's waiting for the for the beating. It doesn't come.
41:54 She's wondering what's going on. A week later, nothing's happening. She says, what's what's happening? He goes, well, I met this guy and we started studying the Bible. Now, both the husband and the wife have become followers of Christ and they're and they're multiplying across his little neighborhood.
42:12 Now, they take the blanket off the little girl. Not ashamed of her anymore. Still hasn't spoken. They're not even praying that God would heal her. In the middle of a meeting, all of a sudden, he hears the words, papa and they look and she stands up, erect.
42:29 All the bones come into place, begins to speak. First time, she's seven years old. Now, he takes her to through the streets. Look what Jesus can do and he he's starting discovery Bible studies through things like this. And now, we've got networks and Bible studies that are being led by disabled people across the across Cairo.
42:59 Thousands and thousands of people are coming to know Christ. We did a conference form here. Most of them had never ever seen a pool. Well, this conference center had a big swimming pool. And we said, well, how what can we rent that pool for?
43:16 And it was like a $100 a day. So we said, we'll we'll rent it. When they, there was 300 of them, they come in. They'd never seen water. They were jumping in.
43:24 They were just rolling their wheelchairs up and falling into the water. Laughing and playing and just pure joy over something so small. I gotta hurry. We got groups. These are all women that have been abused.
43:41 They've been discarded by their husbands. When you get divorced, you're you're forced into prostitution. These are women that are are are being healed and they now lead their own groups and churches of former prostitutes. Children, little girls that are being taken off the streets. Break your heart but God's saving them.
44:08 This was in Nigeria. No, this was in South Africa. We had Nigerians there, Kenyans. What's what happened in The Middle East? God is taking it global.
44:18 And we're now starting the same types of movements with people in different parts of the world. And we're gonna get to what the kinds of leaders we're looking for. These are some of the Nigerians that are on our team that's been in the middle, Ishaku in the green jacket. And this guy young, he's a young leader and he's he gets it. He can see move I see movements in my head just like, you know, I see what's that movie?
44:41 I see dead people in your head. I see I see movements in my head. I see how they can spread across nations. What you saw in that video, how it multiplies, I can see it everywhere I go, how how it can happen through ordinary men and women and so, Ishaku, he would come by me during the days we were got to know each other. He would just go, movements and he would walk by and he's making it happen, this guy.
45:08 And now we've got people up in the middle of the Boko Haram. You know who Boko Haram is? The ones that stole all those girls in Northern Nigeria. They're the Al Qaeda equivalent in Nigeria and these are some of our leaders. Dan Zaggy there in the red white shirt.
45:23 He's my age. When he came to know the Lord at 19 years old, his parents poured boiling oil all over him to kill him. His whole bottom half of his body is scars. They threw him into prison hoping he would die. The the Islamic prisoners actually became like angels to him.
45:40 They put balm on all of his wounds and protected him. And now he rescues these people from Al Qaeda. I mean, from Boko Haram and the little boy in his arms is a a woman a woman and and her child showed up at his house. Then, she left and now, he's adopted these kids and and he then he turned them loose after they come to the Lord back into their communities. This was two and a half weeks ago in Beirut.
46:10 You can see Bassem there and the gal on the far side. That's Miram. She's a Syrian refugee. She's one of the most apostolic leaders I've ever been around. They set a goal at the start of this year to start 50 new discovery Bible study groups.
46:28 Her and her gals. Well, they achieved that by February. So then they set a new goal. They start one every week and they meet that goal. They go out and look for a person, start a conversation, and they start Bible studies.
46:42 She's she's unreal. This cat here, he's from Northern Syria. He drove all the way to Lebanon to be at this training. And the reason that he and I bond, he's an apple farmer, and I'm a cherry farmer. In our spare time, Laurie and I have a cherry farm.
47:02 We have 400 cherry trees that we take care of. And so we compared notes, this guy. And, he's make he's just below the Turkish border. And, yeah, his name is Caesar. Caesar.
47:16 And he's a new contact that we have up in that part. He's he's he's Armenian. So, here's here's a picture of what we do with our trees and I wanna I wanna move into the John 15 verse eight. By this is my father glorified that you bear much fruit and so prove to be my disciples. Everything that we do when we build our team has to do with bearing fruit.
47:44 We are not going to pour resources, time, money, or people into things that are or people that are not producing. We don't have that luxury and we're not gonna do it. With cherry trees, you have to train the cherry tree to actually become a fruit bearer because a cherry tree just wants to grow up and grow tall. So what you have to do is you take those branches and you can see you you you bend the branches past the 90 degree. And then if you look across the orch, you can see all the trees then.
48:21 You prune these branches or you take these branches and you bend them and then you anchor them in the ground or to the base of the tree and what it does, it stresses the branch and exposes the top of the branch to the sun and what you're doing is you're producing fruit wood for the following year and then every other branch is is trimmed off because every other branch will become a sucker And a sucker does what? Sucks energy and nutrients out of the tree and doesn't produce fruit. See, it's the reason I show you, it's hard work to produce fruit. Trees just don't produce fruit on their own. The orchard just has to work hard and it's similar for us.
49:06 It it's hard work to disciple somebody else. And you don't the the tree does not prune itself. It's done in relationship. So we are building teams that keep each other lean and mean. This is an app well, this is our one of our our only apricot tree anymore.
49:26 And you see all those branches on the ground? You know how long it took all those suckers to grow? One year. You have to prune the tree every year and you prune back to look like this. And this is all fruit wood.
49:42 And then your apricots, they start hanging like grapes and then you then you thin them out and then you get fruit that looks like that. But it takes work. They won't produce like that on their own. You have to take the suckers out every year And on our team, that's what we do. Because for us, it's all about the fruit.
50:06 My wife, believe me, she does more of the work. I I take all the credit. She does all the work. But she probably picked a 160 pounds of raspberries out of our little raspberry patch because every year, all the old canes are cut out and then the new canes, she prunes them. Can see on the cherry trees wherever we created fruit wood, there it's just filled with cherries the following year because the goal is to have fruit.
50:35 That's our goal. That's our intention. So when we when we select our leaders, these are some of the things that we we look for. Number one is humility. People say, how do you find these people?
50:52 How do you find these men and women? Because we're intentionally looking for them. And humility is the number one character quality. And they're willing to prune away the suckers in their life. So in relationship, we start saying, okay, what are we doing?
51:07 What's not working? Let's stop doing it. We will never become so enamored with our own stuff that we're not willing to prune it away. They do not need to be the man or the woman. What I mean by that is they're not concerned about building their own thing.
51:23 They get what it means to give away leadership and they're willing to let somebody else shine brighter than them especially if that person's better at something than you. Remember the words of Jesus, you'll do greater things even than me? That's the kind of leadership we're looking for. One that gives it away and says, let let me help you to bear the fruit that you can bear. They wanna grow the kingdom across their neighborhood rather than just growing their ministry or their church.
51:58 They're willing to pay to see the kingdom grow or another way, would you do this even if you didn't get paid? One of the things my dad told me when I started traveling, he says, money will be the litmus test and he was exactly right. When when folks know that you're not bringing money, they disappear. And that's fine with us. Because then you're left with the people that really wanna grow the kingdom.
52:30 And you start investing and we ask them that question. How bad do you wanna see the kingdom grow across your city? What are you willing to give up? What are you willing to do? Are you willing to even take out of your pocket?
52:40 Whatever. I mean, they may have nothing. Sir? So, we have all these criteria for them because we are not going people always want to do a job. They'll they'll sign up.
53:09 We don't hire anybody to do a job. What we do instead is we watch and we see who actually starts obeying, who starts producing fruit. And then we will I mean, the the one training that you saw where I told told you about Miram, that was that was two weeks, two and a half weeks ago. Every person that came to that training is required to replicate it with five other leaders within thirty days. So, there's high accountability and these are all volunteers.
53:44 But they don't get invited back to the next training unless they go and do something because it's not about them coming to a training. And everything we do, every training that we do is done in a way that everybody who comes can go and do it. So it's very simple. It's able to be multiplied. No expert is needed because it if it the moment Norris creates dependency on Norris, I become the bottleneck.
54:14 Do you understand what I mean by bottleneck? And when everything has to go through me or my organization, then it won't spread across the city. And it has to if it's going to become a movement. They have to be willing to die to see the kingdom grow. And it's a real choice for them because it could happen and it's happened to our people.
54:41 And are they willing to pray at a minimum of one hour a day for movements? Because we know that without prayer, none of this is going to happen. This is what we're these are the kind of leaders that we're looking for and we're finding them and they're there. So, some of the results as of this year, 35,000 new churches across East, West, And North Africa in the past seven years. 3,100 in Southern Africa, 3,400 in Eurasia, 2,800 in The Middle East.
55:17 Between five hundred and six hundred thousand new believers. And we're getting it done for about $20 a baptism. There's a good return on the investment monetarily and developing the right kinds of leaders. I think I'm going to finish on time here, Ray, 10:00. I know I went fast.
55:46 I'll be around to answer more questions later on. This is in the back there, there's a small table. If you'd like to get our our monthly letter, you can take my card or you can write down my email right there and just email me and say I was at the service. I'd like to be, you know, get be updated on the information. We have we have a global team now.
56:16 And all of these teammates that we have from The Middle East, the nations of The Middle East, we just got a new leader in Jordan. We're getting leaders in Nigeria, Kenya, across Western Africa, Southern Africa. We're we're building a global team. And I and I wanna tell you this that when I was in Egypt, and I'll and I'll close with this. I I want to say twelve years ago when I was I was doing a training.
56:43 There was about a 160 Egyptian house church planters. And this retired police officer, Egyptian, taller than me. He comes, he can't speak English and I can't speak Arabic. So, he comes walking up to me. He's about as big as Ray here and he puts his big hand on my chest and starts to just prophesy into my life.
57:07 And it scared me because my interpreter, William, starts telling me everything he's saying. And I didn't tell anybody for five years because it was too big. I didn't know how a cherry farmer from Washington could ever see something like this happen, truly. And it was all about there's gonna be a global movement. There's gonna be national leaders and you're gonna have a voice in these nations.
57:30 And I can what I'm asking you to prayer pray for and support is not something we hope is going to happen. It's happening right now. And it's going to grow and it's going to expand. And we also have started teams right here in The United States. Because there's a lot of people saying, why isn't this happening?
57:50 I said, well, it's starting. I know I've had conversations with Ray. He believes in the I mean, he's been a part of DMM and thinking of this way for a long time. It's happening around The US. And, we're developing trainings that are specific for cities in The US.
58:10 So anyway, thank you for listening.
58:22 Thank you, Norris. I'm gonna invite the band back up for one thing. And then can we play and have the frontline team come back up forward? We're gonna play Change My Heart, Oh God, I think.
58:34 Yes. If
58:35 if it goes by. Yep. Norris is going to be speaking tomorrow night at Monday night also. So, 06:00 tomorrow evening. Would you stand?
58:46 Well, how's this work? Y'all just stay seated. And they're gonna pass back by. This is for Church Resource Ministries, Norris and Lori Williams. And would you sing along with us though?
58:59 Change my heart, oh God.
59:06 I just wanna say one more word, and that's it. I love Monday nights very, very much. Oh, it's a wonderful place. Good food. Awesome.
59:15 And, also, if you wanna be a local missionary, please come at Monday nights. Please. Change my heart oh Amen.
