Build Your House on the Rock

In one paragraph

Mike Demetrius, our youth pastor, brought the message on Graduation Sunday. Using Matthew 7:24-27 as his text, he asked what it looks like, day to day, to build your life on the rock rather than on the sand. The answer he worked toward was less about dramatic decisions and more about the ordinary patterns that either hold a life together or let it quietly come apart. Mike opened by remembering...

Read together

  1. Matthew 7:24-27 the wise and foolish builders, used as the foundation for what Michael wants graduating students to build their lives on
  2. 1 John 1:9 if we confess our sins God is faithful and just to forgive and purify us from all unrighteousness
  3. 1 Corinthians 10:13 no temptation has seized you except what is common to man, God provides a way out
  4. Romans 1:17 benediction verse, the righteousness of God revealed in the gospel, the righteous will live by faith
  5. Habakkuk 2:4 noted as the source Romans 1:17 quotes, the just will live by faith

Talk about it

  1. Michael talked about students behaving differently when they are away from authority, using more colorful language and making different choices. When have you noticed that gap between how you act publicly and how you act when no one is watching, and what does that gap tell you about where you are building your house?
  2. Michael shared the story of stealing Tic Tacs as a child and then needing more and more lies to cover the first one. Is there an area of your life right now where lies have started to stack up, and what would it take to start clearing them out?
  3. Michael said that God always works through community and the devil always works through isolation. Where in your life right now are you most tempted toward isolation, and is there someone in this room or in your life who could speak into that?
  4. Michael used the image of a credit card to describe accessing something before you have actually earned or committed to it, and said that when you finally arrive at it, it no longer feels special. How have you seen that pattern play out, whether in relationships, in faith, or somewhere else in your life?
  5. Michael closed by saying you have to build your house on the rock while the weather is warm, before the storm arrives. What does that look like practically for you right now, and what is one thing you could do this week to build before you need it?
