Hebrews 2-3
referenced for the wilderness wandering period skipped in chapter 11
2:1 Therefore we ought to pay greater attention to the things that were heard, lest perhaps we drift away.
2:2 For if the word spoken through angels proved steadfast, and every transgression and disobedience received a just recompense;
2:3 how will we escape if we neglect so great a salvation—which at the first having been spoken through the Lord, was confirmed to us by those who heard;
2:4 God also testifying with them, both by signs and wonders, by various works of power, and by gifts of the Holy Spirit, according to his own will?
2:5 For he didn’t subject the world to come, of which we speak, to angels.
2:6 But one has somewhere testified, saying, “What is man, that you think of him? Or the son of man, that you care for him?
2:7 You made him a little lower than the angels. You crowned him with glory and honor.
2:8 You have put all things in subjection under his feet.” For in that he subjected all things to him, he left nothing that is not subject to him. But now we don’t see all things subjected to him, yet.
2:9 But we see him who has been made a little lower than the angels, Jesus, because of the suffering of death crowned with glory and honor, that by the grace of God he should taste of death for everyone.
2:10 For it became him, for whom are all things, and through whom are all things, in bringing many children to glory, to make the author of their salvation perfect through sufferings.
2:11 For both he who sanctifies and those who are sanctified are all from one, for which cause he is not ashamed to call them brothers,
2:12 saying, “I will declare your name to my brothers. Among of the congregation I will sing your praise.”
2:13 Again, “I will put my trust in him.” Again, “Behold, here I am with the children whom God has given me.”
2:14 Since then the children have shared in flesh and blood, he also himself in the same way partook of the same, that through death he might bring to nothing him who had the power of death, that is, the devil,
2:15 and might deliver all of them who through fear of death were all their lifetime subject to bondage.
2:16 For most certainly, he doesn’t give help to angels, but he gives help to the offspring of Abraham.
2:17 Therefore he was obligated in all things to be made like his brothers, that he might become a merciful and faithful high priest in things pertaining to God, to make atonement for the sins of the people.
2:18 For in that he himself has suffered being tempted, he is able to help those who are tempted.
3:1 Therefore, holy brothers, partakers of a heavenly calling, consider the Apostle and High Priest of our confession, Jesus;
3:2 who was faithful to him who appointed him, as also was Moses in all his house.
3:3 For he has been counted worthy of more glory than Moses, because he who built the house has more honor than the house.
3:4 For every house is built by someone; but he who built all things is God.
3:5 Moses indeed was faithful in all his house as a servant, for a testimony of those things which were afterward to be spoken,
3:6 but Christ is faithful as a Son over his house; whose house we are, if we hold fast our confidence and the glorying of our hope firm to the end.
3:7 Therefore, even as the Holy Spirit says, “Today if you will hear his voice,
3:8 don’t harden your hearts, as in the rebellion, like as in the day of the trial in the wilderness,
3:9 where your fathers tested me by proving me, and saw my deeds for forty years.
3:10 Therefore I was displeased with that generation, and said, ‘They always err in their heart, but they didn’t know my ways;’
3:11 as I swore in my wrath, ‘They will not enter into my rest.’”
3:12 Beware, brothers, lest perhaps there be in any one of you an evil heart of unbelief, in falling away from the living God;
3:13 but exhort one another day by day, so long as it is called “today”; lest any one of you be hardened by the deceitfulness of sin.
3:14 For we have become partakers of Christ, if we hold fast the beginning of our confidence firm to the end:
3:15 while it is said, “Today if you will hear his voice, don’t harden your hearts, as in the rebellion.”
3:16 For who, when they heard, rebelled? No, didn’t all those who came out of Egypt by Moses?
3:17 With whom was he displeased forty years? Wasn’t it with those who sinned, whose bodies fell in the wilderness?
3:18 To whom did he swear that they wouldn’t enter into his rest, but to those who were disobedient?
3:19 We see that they were not able to enter in because of unbelief.

James 2
faith without works is dead, cited in relation to Noah's faith
1 My brothers, don’t hold the faith of our Lord Jesus Christ of glory with partiality.
2 For if a man with a gold ring, in fine clothing, comes into your synagogue, and a poor man in filthy clothing also comes in;
3 and you pay special attention to him who wears the fine clothing, and say, “Sit here in a good place”; and you tell the poor man, “Stand there,” or “Sit by my footstool”;
4 haven’t you shown partiality among yourselves, and become judges with evil thoughts?
5 Listen, my beloved brothers. Didn’t God choose those who are poor in this world to be rich in faith, and heirs of the Kingdom which he promised to those who love him?
6 But you have dishonored the poor man. Don’t the rich oppress you, and personally drag you before the courts?
7 Don’t they blaspheme the honorable name by which you are called?
8 However, if you fulfill the royal law, according to the Scripture, “You shall love your neighbor as yourself,” you do well.
9 But if you show partiality, you commit sin, being convicted by the law as transgressors.
10 For whoever keeps the whole law, and yet stumbles in one point, he has become guilty of all.
11 For he who said, “Do not commit adultery,” also said, “Do not commit murder.” Now if you do not commit adultery, but murder, you have become a transgressor of the law.
12 So speak, and so do, as men who are to be judged by a law of freedom.
13 For judgment is without mercy to him who has shown no mercy. Mercy triumphs over judgment.
14 What good is it, my brothers, if a man says he has faith, but has no works? Can faith save him?
15 And if a brother or sister is naked and in lack of daily food,
16 and one of you tells them, “Go in peace, be warmed and filled”; and yet you didn’t give them the things the body needs, what good is it?
17 Even so faith, if it has no works, is dead in itself.
18 Yes, a man will say, “You have faith, and I have works.” Show me your faith without works, and I by my works will show you my faith.
19 You believe that God is one. You do well. The demons also believe, and shudder.
20 But do you want to know, vain man, that faith apart from works is dead?
21 Wasn’t Abraham our father justified by works, in that he offered up Isaac his son on the altar?
22 You see that faith worked with his works, and by works faith was perfected;
23 and the Scripture was fulfilled which says, “Abraham believed God, and it was accounted to him as righteousness”; and he was called the friend of God.
24 You see then that by works, a man is justified, and not only by faith.
25 In the same way, wasn’t Rahab the prostitute also justified by works, in that she received the messengers, and sent them out another way?
26 For as the body apart from the spirit is dead, even so faith apart from works is dead.

John 13-16
Jesus preparing disciples for his earthly end and promising the Spirit
13:1 Now before the feast of the Passover, Jesus, knowing that his time had come that he would depart from this world to the Father, having loved his own who were in the world, he loved them to the end.
13:2 During supper, the devil having already put into the heart of Judas Iscariot, Simon’s son, to betray him,
13:3 Jesus, knowing that the Father had given all things into his hands, and that he came from God, and was going to God,
13:4 arose from supper, and laid aside his outer garments. He took a towel, and wrapped a towel around his waist.
13:5 Then he poured water into the basin, and began to wash the disciples’ feet, and to wipe them with the towel that was wrapped around him.
13:6 Then he came to Simon Peter. He said to him, “Lord, do you wash my feet?”
13:7 Jesus answered him, “You don’t know what I am doing now, but you will understand later.”
13:8 Peter said to him, “You will never wash my feet!” Jesus answered him, “If I don’t wash you, you have no part with me.”
13:9 Simon Peter said to him, “Lord, not my feet only, but also my hands and my head!”
13:10 Jesus said to him, “Someone who has bathed only needs to have his feet washed, but is completely clean. You are clean, but not all of you.”
13:11 For he knew him who would betray him, therefore he said, “You are not all clean.”
13:12 So when he had washed their feet, put his outer garment back on, and sat down again, he said to them, “Do you know what I have done to you?
13:13 You call me, ‘Teacher’ and ‘Lord.’ You say so correctly, for so I am.
13:14 If I then, the Lord and the Teacher, have washed your feet, you also ought to wash one another’s feet.
13:15 For I have given you an example, that you also should do as I have done to you.
13:16 Most certainly I tell you, a servant is not greater than his lord, neither one who is sent greater than he who sent him.
13:17 If you know these things, blessed are you if you do them.
13:18 I don’t speak concerning all of you. I know whom I have chosen. But that the Scripture may be fulfilled, ‘He who eats bread with me has lifted up his heel against me.’
13:19 From now on, I tell you before it happens, that when it happens, you may believe that I am he.
13:20 Most certainly I tell you, he who receives whomever I send, receives me; and he who receives me, receives him who sent me.”
13:21 When Jesus had said this, he was troubled in spirit, and testified, “Most certainly I tell you that one of you will betray me.”
13:22 The disciples looked at one another, perplexed about whom he spoke.
13:23 One of his disciples, whom Jesus loved, was at the table, leaning against Jesus’ breast.
13:24 Simon Peter therefore beckoned to him, and said to him, “Tell us who it is of whom he speaks.”
13:25 He, leaning back, as he was, on Jesus’ breast, asked him, “Lord, who is it?”
13:26 Jesus therefore answered, “It is he to whom I will give this piece of bread when I have dipped it.” So when he had dipped the piece of bread, he gave it to Judas, the son of Simon Iscariot.
13:27 After the piece of bread, then Satan entered into him. Then Jesus said to him, “What you do, do quickly.”
13:28 Now no man at the table knew why he said this to him.
13:29 For some thought, because Judas had the money box, that Jesus said to him, “Buy what things we need for the feast,” or that he should give something to the poor.
13:30 Therefore having received that morsel, he went out immediately. It was night.
13:31 When he had gone out, Jesus said, “Now the Son of Man has been glorified, and God has been glorified in him.
13:32 If God has been glorified in him, God will also glorify him in himself, and he will glorify him immediately.
13:33 Little children, I will be with you a little while longer. You will seek me, and as I said to the Jews, ‘Where I am going, you can’t come,’ so now I tell you.
13:34 A new commandment I give to you, that you love one another. Just as I have loved you, you also love one another.
13:35 By this everyone will know that you are my disciples, if you have love for one another.”
13:36 Simon Peter said to him, “Lord, where are you going?” Jesus answered, “Where I am going, you can’t follow now, but you will follow afterwards.”
13:37 Peter said to him, “Lord, why can’t I follow you now? I will lay down my life for you.”
13:38 Jesus answered him, “Will you lay down your life for me? Most certainly I tell you, the rooster won’t crow until you have denied me three times.
14:1 “Don’t let your heart be troubled. Believe in God. Believe also in me.
14:2 In my Father’s house are many homes. If it weren’t so, I would have told you. I am going to prepare a place for you.
14:3 If I go and prepare a place for you, I will come again, and will receive you to myself; that where I am, you may be there also.
14:4 Where I go, you know, and you know the way.”
14:5 Thomas said to him, “Lord, we don’t know where you are going. How can we know the way?”
14:6 Jesus said to him, “I am the way, the truth, and the life. No one comes to the Father, except through me.
14:7 If you had known me, you would have known my Father also. From now on, you know him, and have seen him.”
14:8 Philip said to him, “Lord, show us the Father, and that will be enough for us.”
14:9 Jesus said to him, “Have I been with you such a long time, and do you not know me, Philip? He who has seen me has seen the Father. How do you say, ‘Show us the Father?’
14:10 Don’t you believe that I am in the Father, and the Father in me? The words that I tell you, I speak not from myself; but the Father who lives in me does his works.
14:11 Believe me that I am in the Father, and the Father in me; or else believe me for the very works’ sake.
14:12 Most certainly I tell you, he who believes in me, the works that I do, he will do also; and he will do greater works than these, because I am going to my Father.
14:13 Whatever you will ask in my name, that will I do, that the Father may be glorified in the Son.
14:14 If you will ask anything in my name, I will do it.

Recap
The message in order, in a few minutes of reading.
This message was a walk through the final verses of Hebrews 11 and into Hebrews 12, following the writer's list of people who lived and died by faith. Pastor Ray drew a line from those ancient witnesses straight to people in this congregation who have done the same. The sermon closed with the Lord's Supper and a benediction from Jude.
What was said
The writer of Hebrews spent the first part of chapter 11 naming people one by one, Abel, Enoch, Noah, Abraham, Sarah, and others, with a repeating pattern: the person, the act that demonstrated their faith, and the outcome. Pastor Ray noted that the most common outcome in that list is death. These are not people who got an easy road. They are people who trusted God and kept going anyway.
After those thirteen specific examples, the writer shifts. He says, in effect, I could go on forever, and then rattles off a shorter list of names, Gideon, Barak, Samson, Jephthah, David, Samuel, the prophets, without stopping to explain each one. His audience knew who they were. The acts and outcomes become more general too, conquered kingdoms, quenched fire, escaped the sword, but also were tortured, mocked, imprisoned, stoned, sawn in two. The two sides of the ledger are both in the text.
Then the passage pulls back even further and says that all of these, every person on the list, did not receive the fullness of what was promised. They were looking forward to something God had planned that they could not yet see. Pastor Ray pointed out that this is the point where the Old and New Testament experience are tied together. God provided something better, not just for them but for us, so that together we would be made complete.
That movement from the ancient list to the present is where Pastor Ray made his own addition. He named people from this congregation and from his own life who lived out their faith and have died in recent years. His cousin Chad. Bud Searles. Mark Upton, an elder in this church who died protecting someone else from a bear. Grace McDaniel, his grandmother, who taught Sunday school for over sixty years. Wes Flanagan, who carried the gospel everywhere he went until his mind and body gave out. And Kurt Ripley, who passed just this week, and who for years brought a worship service to the residents of the local living center, shoveled neighbors' snow, and led people to Jesus who came in needing a vacuum cleaner fixed.
The reason for building that local list is the word "therefore" at the start of Hebrews 12. Because we have so great a cloud of witnesses surrounding us, we are called to lay aside every encumbrance and the sin that entangles us, and to run with endurance. Pastor Ray said the entire letter of Hebrews is a call to endurance, a call not to walk away from Jesus. The witnesses are not watching us from the stands to judge us. They are the reason we have confidence that it can be done.
The finish line for that call to endurance is fixing our eyes on Jesus, described in the passage as the author and perfecter of our faith. For the joy set before him, he endured the cross and despised the shame, and is now seated at the right hand of God. Pastor Ray noted that Hebrews has already told us Jesus is seated because his work is finished, and that he is also interceding, praying for those who believe, that they would endure. The Spirit draws people toward Christ, and Christ prays for those who belong to him. The congregation is held from both sides.
Doing a Bible study?
Here is a guide we have prepared for you: the passages in order, questions for the group, and room to write.
- Pastor Ray worked through the recurring phrase 'by faith' in Hebrews 11, showing that each person's act flowed from what they believed rather than from the act itself. Where in your own life have you seen that pattern, where what you believed shaped what you did?
- The writer of Hebrews moves from 13 specific examples to more general ones, including people who were tortured, mocked, imprisoned, and killed rather than deny God. What does that progression tell you about what the writer was asking his original readers to be prepared for?
