Watch or read it

In one paragraph

The sermon was a pivot point in the series Pastor Matt has been preaching since coming to First Baptist Jackson. After a brief pop quiz over what the congregation had learned in Galatians, Habakkuk, and First Peter, he made the case that understanding Scripture is only half the work. The rest, he said, has to be lived out together. Pastor Matt opened by quizzing the congregation on what they had...

Read together

  1. Habakkuk 2:4 central verse of Habakkuk, the silver lining: the righteous shall live by faith
  2. Romans 1:17 one of three New Testament repetitions of Habakkuk 2:4b
  3. Galatians 3:11 central idea of the Galatians series, another repetition of Habakkuk 2:4b
  4. Hebrews 10:38 third New Testament repetition of Habakkuk 2:4b
  5. Galatians 2:20 the Christian life in one verse, I have been crucified with Christ, Christ lives in me, I live by faith in the Son of God
  6. Ephesians 4:17-19 Gentiles walking in futility of mind, darkened understanding, excluded from the life of God
  7. Ephesians 4:20-24 you did not learn Christ this way, lay aside the old self, be renewed, put on the new self
  8. Ephesians 4:25 laying aside falsehood, speak truth each one with his neighbor, we are members of one another
  9. Ephesians 4:26-27 be angry and do not sin, do not let the sun go down on your anger, do not give the devil an opportunity
  10. Ephesians 4:28 he who steals must steal no longer but labor with his own hands to share with those in need
  11. Ephesians 4:29 let no unwholesome word proceed from your mouth but only what is good for edification
  12. Ephesians 4:30 do not grieve the Holy Spirit by whom you were sealed for the day of redemption
  13. Ephesians 4:31 let all bitterness, wrath, anger, clamor, slander and malice be put away
  14. Ephesians 4:32 key verse: be kind to one another, tender hearted, forgiving each other just as God in Christ has forgiven you
  15. Ephesians 5:1 become imitators of God as dearly beloved children
  16. Ephesians 5:2 walk in love just as Christ loved you and gave himself up as an offering and sacrifice to God

Talk about it

  1. The pastor spent time reviewing what the congregation had learned from previous sermon series before moving into application. What does it look like in your own life when you understand something from Scripture but have not yet applied it? Can you think of a specific example?
  2. The pastor read through a long list of 'one another' commands from the New Testament. Which one or two from that list feel most natural to you, and which ones feel most difficult? Why do you think that is?
  3. Ephesians 4:32 calls us to be kind, tender-hearted, and forgiving toward one another, and grounds all three commands in the fact that God in Christ has forgiven us. How does remembering what God has forgiven you of actually change the way you treat someone you are having a hard time with?
  4. The pastor described his daughter Paschal picking up her teacher Miss Meg's mannerisms simply by spending time with her, and used that to illustrate what it means to become imitators of God. What habits or practices in your own life are actually helping you spend time with God and grow more like Him?
  5. The pastor said that everything he has taught since arriving at First Baptist comes back to the cross, and that if it does not, it is stubble that will burn up. How does the gospel, specifically what Christ did on the cross, serve as the motivation for the one-another commands rather than just a good moral standard to aim for?
