Psalm 33 Opening verse: 'Let your unfailing love surround us, oh Lord, for our hope is on you'
1 Rejoice in Yahweh, you righteous! Praise is fitting for the upright.
2 Give thanks to Yahweh with the lyre. Sing praises to him with the harp of ten strings.
3 Sing to him a new song. Play skillfully with a shout of joy!
4 For Yahweh’s word is right. All his work is done in faithfulness.
5 He loves righteousness and justice. The earth is full of the loving kindness of Yahweh.
6 By Yahweh’s word, the heavens were made; all their army by the breath of his mouth.
7 He gathers the waters of the sea together as a heap. He lays up the deeps in storehouses.
8 Let all the earth fear Yahweh. Let all the inhabitants of the world stand in awe of him.
9 For he spoke, and it was done. He commanded, and it stood firm.
10 Yahweh brings the counsel of the nations to nothing. He makes the thoughts of the peoples to be of no effect.
11 The counsel of Yahweh stands fast forever, the thoughts of his heart to all generations.
12 Blessed is the nation whose God is Yahweh, the people whom he has chosen for his own inheritance.
13 Yahweh looks from heaven. He sees all the sons of men.
14 From the place of his habitation he looks out on all the inhabitants of the earth,
15 he who fashions all of their hearts; and he considers all of their works.
16 There is no king saved by the multitude of an army. A mighty man is not delivered by great strength.
17 A horse is a vain thing for safety, neither does he deliver any by his great power.
18 Behold, Yahweh’s eye is on those who fear him, on those who hope in his loving kindness;
19 to deliver their soul from death, to keep them alive in famine.
20 Our soul has waited for Yahweh. He is our help and our shield.
21 For our heart rejoices in him, because we have trusted in his holy name.
22 Let your loving kindness be on us, Yahweh, since we have hoped in you.

Hebrews 4:14-5:10
The main preaching text for the sermon
14 Having then a great high priest, who has passed through the heavens, Jesus, the Son of God, let us hold tightly to our confession.
15 For we don’t have a high priest who can’t be touched with the feeling of our infirmities, but one who has been in all points tempted like we are, yet without sin.
16 Let us therefore draw near with boldness to the throne of grace, that we may receive mercy, and may find grace for help in time of need.
1 For every high priest, being taken from among men, is appointed for men in things pertaining to God, that he may offer both gifts and sacrifices for sins.
2 The high priest can deal gently with those who are ignorant and going astray, because he himself is also surrounded with weakness.
3 Because of this, he must offer sacrifices for sins for the people, as well as for himself.
4 Nobody takes this honor on himself, but he is called by God, just like Aaron was.
5 So also Christ didn’t glorify himself to be made a high priest, but it was he who said to him, “You are my Son. Today I have become your father.”
6 As he says also in another place, “You are a priest forever, after the order of Melchizedek.”
7 He, in the days of his flesh, having offered up prayers and petitions with strong crying and tears to him who was able to save him from death, and having been heard for his godly fear,
8 though he was a Son, yet learned obedience by the things which he suffered.
9 Having been made perfect, he became to all of those who obey him the author of eternal salvation,
10 named by God a high priest after the order of Melchizedek.

Psalm 2
Quoted as God speaking to the Son: 'You are my Son, today I have begotten you'
1 Why do the nations rage, and the peoples plot a vain thing?
2 The kings of the earth take a stand, and the rulers take counsel together, against Yahweh, and against his Anointed, saying,
3 “Let’s break their bonds apart, and cast their cords from us.”
4 He who sits in the heavens will laugh. The Lord will have them in derision.
5 Then he will speak to them in his anger, and terrify them in his wrath:
6 “Yet I have set my King on my holy hill of Zion.”
7 I will tell of the decree. Yahweh said to me, “You are my son. Today I have become your father.
8 Ask of me, and I will give the nations for your inheritance, the uttermost parts of the earth for your possession.
9 You shall break them with a rod of iron. You shall dash them in pieces like a potter’s vessel.”
10 Now therefore be wise, you kings. Be instructed, you judges of the earth.
11 Serve Yahweh with fear, and rejoice with trembling.
12 Give sincere homage to the Son, lest he be angry, and you perish on the way, for his wrath will soon be kindled. Blessed are all those who take refuge in him.

Numbers 16
The Korah rebellion, illustrating that no one takes priestly honor to himself
1 Now Korah, the son of Izhar, the son of Kohath, the son of Levi, with Dathan and Abiram, the sons of Eliab, and On, the son of Peleth, sons of Reuben, took some men.
2 They rose up before Moses, with some of the children of Israel, two hundred fifty princes of the congregation, called to the assembly, men of renown.
3 They assembled themselves together against Moses and against Aaron, and said to them, “You take too much on yourself, since all the congregation are holy, everyone of them, and Yahweh is among them! Why do you lift yourselves up above Yahweh’s assembly?”
4 When Moses heard it, he fell on his face.
5 He said to Korah and to all his company, “In the morning, Yahweh will show who are his, and who is holy, and will cause him to come near to him. Even him whom he shall choose, he will cause to come near to him.
6 Do this: take censers, Korah, and all his company;
7 and put fire in them, and put incense on them before Yahweh tomorrow. It shall be that the man whom Yahweh chooses, he shall be holy. You have gone too far, you sons of Levi!”
8 Moses said to Korah, “Hear now, you sons of Levi!
9 Is it a small thing to you, that the God of Israel has separated you from the congregation of Israel, to bring you near to himself, to do the service of Yahweh’s tabernacle, and to stand before the congregation to minister to them;
10 and that he has brought you near, and all your brothers the sons of Levi with you? Do you seek the priesthood also?
11 Therefore you and all your company have gathered together against Yahweh! What is Aaron that you murmur against him?”
12 Moses sent to call Dathan and Abiram, the sons of Eliab; and they said, “We won’t come up!
13 Is it a small thing that you have brought us up out of a land flowing with milk and honey, to kill us in the wilderness, but you must also make yourself a prince over us?
14 Moreover you haven’t brought us into a land flowing with milk and honey, nor given us inheritance of fields and vineyards. Will you put out the eyes of these men? We won’t come up.”
15 Moses was very angry, and said to Yahweh, “Don’t respect their offering. I have not taken one donkey from them, neither have I hurt one of them.”
16 Moses said to Korah, “You and all your company go before Yahweh, you, and they, and Aaron, tomorrow.
17 Each man take his censer, and put incense on them, and each man bring before Yahweh his censer, two hundred fifty censers; you also, and Aaron, each his censer.”
18 They each took his censer, and put fire in them, and laid incense on it, and stood at the door of the Tent of Meeting with Moses and Aaron.
19 Korah assembled all the congregation opposite them to the door of the Tent of Meeting. Yahweh’s glory appeared to all the congregation.
20 Yahweh spoke to Moses and to Aaron, saying,
21 “Separate yourselves from among this congregation, that I may consume them in a moment!”
22 They fell on their faces, and said, “God, the God of the spirits of all flesh, shall one man sin, and will you be angry with all the congregation?”
23 Yahweh spoke to Moses, saying,
24 “Speak to the congregation, saying, ‘Get away from around the tent of Korah, Dathan, and Abiram!’”
25 Moses rose up and went to Dathan and Abiram; and the elders of Israel followed him.
26 He spoke to the congregation, saying, “Depart, please, from the tents of these wicked men, and touch nothing of theirs, lest you be consumed in all their sins!”
27 So they went away from the tent of Korah, Dathan, and Abiram, on every side. Dathan and Abiram came out, and stood at the door of their tents, with their wives, their sons, and their little ones.
28 Moses said, “Hereby you shall know that Yahweh has sent me to do all these works; for they are not from my own mind.
29 If these men die the common death of all men, or if they experience what all men experience, then Yahweh hasn’t sent me.
30 But if Yahweh makes a new thing, and the ground opens its mouth, and swallows them up, with all that belong to them, and they go down alive into Sheol; then you shall understand that these men have despised Yahweh.”
31 As he finished speaking all these words, the ground that was under them split apart.
32 The earth opened its mouth and swallowed them up, with their households, all of Korah’s men, and all their goods.
33 So they, and all that belonged to them went down alive into Sheol. The earth closed on them, and they perished from among the assembly.
34 All Israel that were around them fled at their cry; for they said, “Lest the earth swallow us up!”
35 Fire came out from Yahweh, and devoured the two hundred fifty men who offered the incense.
36 Yahweh spoke to Moses, saying,
37 “Speak to Eleazar the son of Aaron the priest, that he take up the censers out of the burning, and scatter the fire away from the camp; for they are holy,
38 even the censers of those who sinned against their own lives. Let them be beaten into plates for a covering of the altar, for they offered them before Yahweh. Therefore they are holy. They shall be a sign to the children of Israel.”
39 Eleazar the priest took the bronze censers, which those who were burned had offered; and they beat them out for a covering of the altar,
40 to be a memorial to the children of Israel, to the end that no stranger, who isn’t of the offspring of Aaron, would come near to burn incense before Yahweh, that he not be as Korah, and as his company; as Yahweh spoke to him by Moses.
41 But on the next day all the congregation of the children of Israel murmured against Moses and against Aaron, saying, “You have killed Yahweh’s people!”
42 When the congregation was assembled against Moses and against Aaron, They looked toward the Tent of Meeting. Behold, the cloud covered it, and Yahweh’s glory appeared.
43 Moses and Aaron came to the front of the Tent of Meeting.
44 Yahweh spoke to Moses, saying,
45 “Get away from among this congregation, that I may consume them in a moment!” They fell on their faces.
46 Moses said to Aaron, “Take your censer,…

Philippians 2
Christ humbled himself, and God therefore exalted him above every name
1 If therefore there is any exhortation in Christ, if any consolation of love, if any fellowship of the Spirit, if any tender mercies and compassion,
2 make my joy full, by being like-minded, having the same love, being of one accord, of one mind;
3 doing nothing through rivalry or through conceit, but in humility, each counting others better than himself;
4 each of you not just looking to his own things, but each of you also to the things of others.
5 Have this in your mind, which was also in Christ Jesus,
6 who, existing in the form of God, didn’t consider equality with God a thing to be grasped,
7 but emptied himself, taking the form of a servant, being made in the likeness of men.
8 And being found in human form, he humbled himself, becoming obedient to death, yes, the death of the cross.
9 Therefore God also highly exalted him, and gave to him the name which is above every name;
10 that at the name of Jesus every knee should bow, of those in heaven, those on earth, and those under the earth,
11 and that every tongue should confess that Jesus Christ is Lord, to the glory of God the Father.
12 So then, my beloved, even as you have always obeyed, not only in my presence, but now much more in my absence, work out your own salvation with fear and trembling.
13 For it is God who works in you both to will and to work, for his good pleasure.
14 Do all things without murmurings and disputes,
15 that you may become blameless and harmless, children of God without defect in the middle of a crooked and perverse generation, among whom you are seen as lights in the world,
16 holding up the word of life; that I may have something to boast in the day of Christ, that I didn’t run in vain nor labor in vain.
17 Yes, and if I am poured out on the sacrifice and service of your faith, I rejoice, and rejoice with you all.
18 In the same way, you also rejoice, and rejoice with me.
19 But I hope in the Lord Jesus to send Timothy to you soon, that I also may be cheered up when I know how you are doing.
20 For I have no one else like-minded, who will truly care about you.
21 For they all seek their own, not the things of Jesus Christ.
22 But you know the proof of him, that, as a child serves a father, so he served with me in furtherance of the Good News.
23 Therefore I hope to send him at once, as soon as I see how it will go with me.
24 But I trust in the Lord that I myself also will come shortly.
25 But I counted it necessary to send to you Epaphroditus, my brother, fellow worker, fellow soldier, and your apostle and servant of my need;
26 since he longed for you all, and was very troubled, because you had heard that he was sick.
27 For indeed he was sick, nearly to death, but God had mercy on him; and not on him only, but on me also, that I might not have sorrow on sorrow.
28 I have sent him therefore the more diligently, that, when you see him again, you may rejoice, and that I may be the less sorrowful.
29 Receive him therefore in the Lord with all joy, and hold such in honor,
30 because for the work of Christ he came near to death, risking his life to supply that which was lacking in your service toward me.

Isaiah 7
Quoted as Jesus saying 'I will put my trust in him' and 'I will wait for the Lord'
1 In the days of Ahaz the son of Jotham, the son of Uzziah, king of Judah, Rezin the king of Syria, and Pekah the son of Remaliah, king of Israel, went up to Jerusalem to war against it, but could not prevail against it.
2 David’s house was told, “Syria is allied with Ephraim.” His heart trembled, and the heart of his people, as the trees of the forest tremble with the wind.
3 Then Yahweh said to Isaiah, “Go out now to meet Ahaz, you, and Shearjashub your son, at the end of the conduit of the upper pool, on the highway of the fuller’s field.
4 Tell him, ‘Be careful, and keep calm. Don’t be afraid, neither let your heart be faint because of these two tails of smoking torches, for the fierce anger of Rezin and Syria, and of the son of Remaliah.
5 Because Syria, Ephraim, and the son of Remaliah, have plotted evil against you, saying,
6 “Let’s go up against Judah, and tear it apart, and let’s divide it among ourselves, and set up a king within it, even the son of Tabeel.”
7 This is what the Lord Yahweh says: “It shall not stand, neither shall it happen.”
8 For the head of Syria is Damascus, and the head of Damascus is Rezin; and within sixty-five years Ephraim shall be broken in pieces, so that it shall not be a people;
9 and the head of Ephraim is Samaria, and the head of Samaria is Remaliah’s son. If you will not believe, surely you shall not be established.’”
10 Yahweh spoke again to Ahaz, saying,
11 “Ask a sign of Yahweh your God; ask it either in the depth, or in the height above.”
12 But Ahaz said, “I will not ask, neither will I tempt Yahweh.”
13 He said, “Listen now, house of David. Is it not enough for you to try the patience of men, that you will try the patience of my God also?
14 Therefore the Lord himself will give you a sign. Behold, the virgin will conceive, and bear a son, and shall call his name Immanuel.
15 He shall eat butter and honey when he knows to refuse the evil, and choose the good.
16 For before the child knows to refuse the evil, and choose the good, the land whose two kings you abhor shall be forsaken.
17 Yahweh will bring on you, on your people, and on your father’s house, days that have not come, from the day that Ephraim departed from Judah; even the king of Assyria.
18 It will happen in that day that Yahweh will whistle for the fly that is in the uttermost part of the rivers of Egypt, and for the bee that is in the land of Assyria.
19 They shall come, and shall all rest in the desolate valleys, in the clefts of the rocks, on all thorn hedges, and on all pastures.
20 In that day the Lord will shave with a razor that is hired in the parts beyond the River, even with the king of Assyria, the head and the hair of the feet; and it shall also consume the beard.
21 It shall happen in that day that a man shall keep alive a young cow, and two sheep;
22 and it shall happen, that because of the abundance of milk which they shall give he shall eat butter: for everyone will eat butter and honey that is left within the land.
23 It will happen in that day that every place where there were a thousand vines at a thousand silver shekels, shall be for briers and thorns.
24 People will go there with arrows and with bow, because all the land will be briers and thorns.
25 All the hills that were cultivated with the hoe, you shall not come there for fear of briers and thorns; but it shall be for the sending out of oxen, and for the treading of sheep.”

1 Peter 2
While reviled he did not revile in return but kept entrusting himself to him who judges righteously
1 Putting away therefore all wickedness, all deceit, hypocrisies, envies, and all evil speaking,
2 as newborn babies, long for the pure milk of the Word, that with it you may grow,
3 if indeed you have tasted that the Lord is gracious:
4 coming to him, a living stone, rejected indeed by men, but chosen by God, precious.
5 You also, as living stones, are built up as a spiritual house, to be a holy priesthood, to offer up spiritual sacrifices, acceptable to God through Jesus Christ.
6 Because it is contained in Scripture, “Behold, I lay in Zion a chief cornerstone, chosen, and precious: He who believes in him will not be disappointed.”
7 For you who believe therefore is the honor, but for those who are disobedient, “The stone which the builders rejected, has become the chief cornerstone,”
8 and, “a stone of stumbling, and a rock of offense.” For they stumble at the word, being disobedient, to which also they were appointed.
9 But you are a chosen race, a royal priesthood, a holy nation, a people for God’s own possession, that you may proclaim the excellence of him who called you out of darkness into his marvelous light:
10 who in time past were no people, but now are God’s people, who had not obtained mercy, but now have obtained mercy.
11 Beloved, I beg you as foreigners and pilgrims, to abstain from fleshly lusts, which war against the soul;
12 having good behavior among the nations, so in that of which they speak against you as evildoers, they may by your good works, which they see, glorify God in the day of visitation.
13 Therefore subject yourselves to every ordinance of man for the Lord’s sake: whether to the king, as supreme;
14 or to governors, as sent by him for vengeance on evildoers and for praise to those who do well.
15 For this is the will of God, that by well-doing you should put to silence the ignorance of foolish men:
16 as free, and not using your freedom for a cloak of wickedness, but as bondservants of God.
17 Honor all men. Love the brotherhood. Fear God. Honor the king.
18 Servants, be in subjection to your masters with all fear; not only to the good and gentle, but also to the wicked.
19 For it is commendable if someone endures pain, suffering unjustly, because of conscience toward God.
20 For what glory is it if, when you sin, you patiently endure beating? But if, when you do well, you patiently endure suffering, this is commendable with God.
21 For to this you were called, because Christ also suffered for us, leaving you an example, that you should follow his steps,
22 who did not sin, “neither was deceit found in his mouth.”
23 Who, when he was cursed, didn’t curse back. When he suffered, didn’t threaten, but committed himself to him who judges righteously.
24 He himself bore our sins in his body on the tree, that we, having died to sins, might live to righteousness; by whose stripes you were healed.
25 For you were going astray like sheep; but now have returned to the Shepherd and Overseer of your souls.

2 Corinthians 13
Benediction: 'May the grace of the Lord Jesus Christ and the love of God and the fellowship of his Holy Spirit be with you all'
1 This is the third time I am coming to you. “At the mouth of two or three witnesses shall every word be established.”
2 I have said beforehand, and I do say beforehand, as when I was present the second time, so now, being absent, I write to those who have sinned before now, and to all the rest, that, if I come again, I will not spare;
3 seeing that you seek a proof of Christ who speaks in me; who toward you is not weak, but is powerful in you.
4 For he was crucified through weakness, yet he lives through the power of God. For we also are weak in him, but we will live with him through the power of God toward you.
5 Examine your own selves, whether you are in the faith. Test your own selves. Or don’t you know as to your own selves, that Jesus Christ is in you?—unless indeed you are disqualified.
6 But I hope that you will know that we aren’t disqualified.
7 Now I pray to God that you do no evil; not that we may appear approved, but that you may do that which is honorable, though we are as reprobate.
8 For we can do nothing against the truth, but for the truth.
9 For we rejoice when we are weak and you are strong. And this we also pray for, even your perfecting.
10 For this cause I write these things while absent, that I may not deal sharply when present, according to the authority which the Lord gave me for building up, and not for tearing down.
11 Finally, brothers, rejoice. Be perfected, be comforted, be of the same mind, live in peace, and the God of love and peace will be with you.
12 Greet one another with a holy kiss.
13 All the saints greet you.
14 The grace of the Lord Jesus Christ, God’s love, and the fellowship of the Holy Spirit, be with you all. Amen.

Recap
The message in order, in a few minutes of reading.
Pastor Mark picked up where he left off the previous week in Hebrews 4:14 through 5:10, working through the passage that describes Jesus as our great high priest. He spent the sermon building a case for why that title means something, drawing on the Old Testament priestly system and the mysterious figure of Melchizedek. The goal was not just to explain a theological category but to show why it matters personally that Christ is both fully human and fully divine.
What was said
Before getting to the new material, Pastor Mark quickly reviewed the "hortatory subjunctives" he had introduced the week before. These are the writer of Hebrews encouraging the reader toward something good while leaving the choice with them, phrases like "let us pay closer attention," "let us fear," "let us be diligent," and "let us hold fast our confession." He compared it to gently waking a child for school. The let us language is an invitation to join in, not a pointed command, and the writer uses it repeatedly because drifting away from what you already know is a real danger.
The passage then moves to the priestly system itself. Every high priest is taken from among ordinary men, appointed to deal with the things of God on behalf of the people, and able to deal gently with those who sin out of ignorance or being misguided because he himself is subject to weakness. That weakness is not a disqualification. It actually shapes a priest who understands what he is dealing with. And crucially, no one appoints himself to that role. It comes from God, as it did with Aaron.
So also, the text says, Christ did not glorify himself to become a high priest. Pastor Mark pointed out that this would have been a sharp line for the original Hebrew readers of the letter, since Jesus was from the tribe of Judah, not Levi. How could he possibly be a priest? The writer of Hebrews answers by citing two Psalms. God the Father said to the Son, "You are my Son, today I have begotten you," and in another place, "You are a priest forever according to the order of Melchizedek." The priesthood of Jesus does not depend on tribal lineage. It rests on a divine declaration, and it is eternal.
The passage then describes what Jesus's earthly life actually looked like. In the days of his flesh, he offered up prayers and supplications with loud crying and tears to the one who was able to save him from death. Pastor Mark paused here to press on what it means that Jesus prayed that way. He pointed to the Garden of Gethsemane, to Jesus weeping outside Jerusalem, to his tears at Lazarus's tomb. This was not a performance. He was heard because of his piety, not because he twisted God's arm. He entrusted himself to the Father, and the Father heard him.
Although he was a Son, he learned obedience from the things he suffered. Pastor Mark noted that this mirrors what Hebrews 2 already said, that Jesus was made perfect through suffering, not because he was impure to begin with, but because he was being prepared. Obedience in the face of real temptation and real suffering is what qualified him to become to all those who obey him the source of eternal salvation. He drew a line between belief and action here: what you truly believe is what you act on, and if the gospel has taken hold, obedience follows.
Melchizedek appears briefly at the end of the passage and Pastor Mark treated him briefly in proportion. He traced the two Old Testament references, Genesis 14 where Melchizedek, king of Salem and priest of God Most High, blesses Abraham returning from battle and receives a tithe from him, and Psalm 110:4 where God swears the Son is a priest forever after his order. The point is not to build a theology around Melchizedek himself. Pastor Mark warned plainly that heresy thrives on obscure biblical references and felt need, and that cultic groups have made much of this figure for the wrong reasons. The fuller treatment is coming in chapter seven.
He closed by saying that six weeks into preaching Hebrews, his own understanding of what it means that Christ is his great high priest, that Christ has taken his sin and his punishment, is richer than when he started, because he has been paying closer attention to what he had already heard. That is the invitation the letter keeps extending to its readers.
Doing a Bible study?
Here is a guide we have prepared for you: the passages in order, questions for the group, and room to write.
- The pastor walked through several 'let us' encouragements from Hebrews, including 'let us pay closer attention to what we have already heard so that we do not drift away from it.' Where in your own life do you notice yourself drifting, and what does paying closer attention actually look like for you day to day?
- The pastor described the difference between a throne of judgment and the throne of grace, and said believers can 'keep on coming before God and keep a right relationship with him through Jesus' sacrifice.' What gets in the way of you actually approaching God with that kind of confidence?
