Recap
The message in order, in a few minutes of reading.
This was Father's Day at First B, and the message centered on a short passage from 1 Timothy where Paul addresses Timothy as his "true child in the faith." The preacher drew a line between what Paul offered Timothy and what fathers are called to offer their own children. It was a brief, direct word aimed at the fathers in the room and at everyone who knows God as a heavenly Father.
What was said
Paul opens 1 Timothy by identifying himself as an apostle writing to Timothy, and the preacher pointed out that Paul and Timothy were not actually father and son. What they had was a relationship that looked and felt like one, and Paul's letter reflects that kind of care.
The specific things Paul wished for Timothy were grace, mercy, and peace. The preacher read those words slowly and let them sit. These were not abstract theology, they were the actual things one person was offering another across a letter.
The application was plain: fathers in the room should think about offering those same things to their own children. The preacher acknowledged that on a hectic Sunday morning, when everyone is rushing to get out the door, that is genuinely hard to do. He did not pretend otherwise.
He then widened the circle. Whether someone in the room is a father or not, God as a heavenly Father wants to offer those same things to His children. Grace, mercy, and peace are not only things fathers give downward. They are things we all receive from above.
The service itself carried some extra texture that morning. The sanctuary was decorated for Vacation Bible School, which was starting the next day, and nineteen women from the church were preparing to take that same VBS curriculum to Kenya in August. The preacher named both of those things as reasons for prayer and gratitude, woven in around the Father's Day word.
