3:24
hope you didn't let that temple thing take away from the message of that song. Good words, Amen?
3:31
Alright. Now, there are a lot of southerners in here but this is the battle hymn of the republic and it's been a while y'all. We can sing this, okay?
3:37
Y'all?
3:38
Yes. Hymn number eight zero four. If you would join us, we're gonna sing first, second, fourth, and fifth, skip the third because this is a baptist church.
3:45
We we'll follow you. My eyes have seen the glory of the coming of the Lord lay as trampling out the vintage where the grapes His truth is marching on. I have seen him in the watchfires of a 100 circling camps. They have builded him an altar in the evening dues and dams. I can read his righteous sentence by the dim and flaring lamps.
4:45
His day is marching on. Glory, glory, hallelujah.
5:16
Can we stop just a second?
5:18
Or is
5:19
she just pounding on, ain't she?
5:20
That's the way you do.
5:21
If you if you skip one, I'll fix it. That's what we're doing. We're playing battling Don't touch that. Don't touch
5:29
that. No touch.
5:32
Verse number four, it's the pretty one. So here we go. Alright. In
5:37
the beauty of the lilies, Christ was born across the sea with the glory in his bosom that transfigures you and me as he died to make men holy. Let us live to make men free if God is marching on. Glory glory is marching on. We can almost hear the trumpet sound. The Lord's return is near.
6:23
They are still so many people lost his message. They must hear. Father give us one more moment one more day just one more year while God is marching on glory glory
7:00
Y'all can have a seat. I've got a couple of announcements. One of em, Monday nights. Normally, on Monday nights, every Monday night, we get together in the Fellowship hall and we have meal, music, and a message. Well, this week, not.
7:13
We're not doing that this week. We're not having Monday nights on Monday. Instead, we've invited all the Monday nighters to come to Tuesday night at the Bar J for the Turning Point Annual Fundraiser. Brian and Scott and the guys have done this. I think it's been nineteen years that the Bar J has been hosting this event and it's to help raise money for the Turning Point Pregnancy Resource Center.
7:39
So, if you do not have your tickets yet and you would like to get tickets, Diana is standing up in the back, back there, next to Tanya. Diane, would you wave? Diane has tickets for that event. It's $24 for adults, dollars 12 for kids, 12 and under, and she has em with her today. It's the normal gate opening time, 05:30.
7:57
The meal starts at seven but there will be things like silent auctions and it's a good time. It's a fun time. So, barbecue beef that night come join us. We'll be there and the Monday nighters are planning on reconvening on Tuesday instead of Monday this week. Thank you all for doing that too, fellas and Barjay is actually here.
8:16
The Wranglers are here to sing for us for the operatory and for a special. So, thank you for that. We are having a vacation Bible school. The theme of Vacation Bible School this year is the Surf Shack and we still need volunteers. So, the Surf Shack Bible School from the twentieth through the twenty fourth from nine to twelve in the morning.
8:35
If you would like to, you may speak to either Krista Clemmer or Dancey Tolleson about being a volunteer or to register the kids. You can even do it online at firstbjackson.org if you would like to. I think that's all of the announcements that I have on screen but I have one little page right here. RJ, Turning Point, that's Tuesday night, this Tuesday, May 31. Graduating seniors will be honored next week.
9:04
Both services, June 5, both services. So, if you are or if you know a high school senior here in the Valley, would you have em come on? Send, Renzy, do you need a picture of em?
9:14
Yeah, most of them. That
9:17
you know about. Okay. Thank you very much. So, that's June 5, both services. June 8 is a Wednesday night and that is going to be a worship combined worship service.
9:38
So, First B's band and River Crossing's band and the Press Church Band, we're all going to get together at Rivercross and they have a great sound system and and plenty of space and so we're going to all get together on a Wednesday night at 06:30. It's June 8. Please plan on being there. It's a fun time. We have had one of em before and it's kind of growing.
9:57
So, we'd love to have you there. June 8, I don't have a slide for it and two weeks from today, we're doing a baby dedication. If there are any babies that you feel like need to be dedicated, talk to the mamas and daddies and bring em on and we'll dedicate em all on June 12. So, is there anything else anybody has? Alright.
10:14
Thank you, Tanya for saying no. Would y'all stand up and greet one another and we will bring you back together with a peppy song.
10:50
And crown thy good with brotherhood from sea to shining sea.
11:00
Oh, beautiful four
11:20
America, America, God, win thine every flaw. Confirm thy soul in self control, and crown thy good with brotherhood from sea to shining sea
13:00
Amen. Y'all can have a seat. Y'all can have a seat. We're skipping that one. So, I can gonna invite the Barjay Wranglers if you would to come on up because y'all singing during offering, right?
13:13
And the front line. The frontline team could come forward too. I appreciate the the Barjay just started back up. Y'all know they start Memorial Day weekend. So, they've had a couple of shows under their belt now.
13:27
They've got the Tuesday night turning point thing coming up. We're going to take up just our normal general offering right now but I particularly, these guys sing all the time and they entertain, you know, 500 people a night, 700 people a night. It's crazy and they do it every single night. So, would you join me in asking God to just bless them and their voices as they go forward? I can't imagine looking at that.
13:48
I know what it's like to have to have to preach and sing every Sunday and they do it every single night. It's crazy. So, lord, would you please bless these guys in what they do? All that they endeavor to do for for you and for your kingdom and also just in service of others. Helping people to have fun, helping people to see you, helping people to see each other in a favorable light.
14:14
Lord God, I thank you for these five guys, for their families, and for their devotion to this community and to your cause. In Jesus name, lord, I ask for your blessing. I also ask for you to take these tithes and offerings that we will be given right now this morning and that you would multiply em lord to see your kingdoms advance. Lord, would you convince us of your righteousness? Would you show us what it is that you would have us do, lord?
14:44
And would you strengthen us to be able to walk in exactly the way that you'd have us go. God, would you take these as an acknowledgement of what you've given but also just like you do loaves and fishes, Multiply em and spread em to the ends of the earth for your good name's sake. In Jesus name, amen.
15:15
Lord, I'm leaving in the morning. Won't be back for a while. There's a war ago and on right now, won't see her pretty smile. The kids will ask their mama. Hey, where's my dad today?
15:46
He's off to serve our country, the good
15:52
old USA.
15:58
My boy, he's only five years old. He'll miss me. This I know. It takes all the strength I've got to saddle up and go. The girls are growing way too fast.
16:23
I hope they'll understand this life that takes me from my home back to
17:12
wrong.
17:15
I really ain't much praying. Could you hear me in my song? All I got's this old guitar and memories I hold dear. One old faded photograph held to keep them near. This good book I hold tonight, I hope it makes you hear.
19:04
Really fast. An ambush over took us. We're not gonna last.
20:48
Thank you, folks. And it's it was a privilege to get invited here today. We really, first and foremost, try to give God the glory for for what we do, and and hopefully that that song kinda touches the hearts in in remembrance of the sacrifice that goes on with the men and women that serve this country. And that's why we're invited here today to share that song. Brian wrote that song, so we're we're proud of him.
21:11
Yeah. He did a good job on that. The they asked us to do one more, so we're gonna sing one more for you. Yeah. And, hopefully, this will, you can tap your foot with
21:39
Come and forward to carry me home.
21:48
Swing low, sweet I'm gonna tell you about the coming of the judgment.
22:16
Fairly well. Fairly well.
22:18
I'm gonna tell you about the
22:20

22:30

When you see the lightning flashing fairly well. Fairly well. When you hear the thunder crashing. Fairly well. Fairly well.
22:50
When you see the stars have fallen.
22:52
Fairly well. Fairly well.
22:54

23:16
hear the chariots
23:18
calling. Good news. Good news.
23:20
Chariots are coming. News. Chariots are coming.
23:24
Glad. So
23:24

23:26

23:54
Fairly well in that great. I didn't up morning fairly well. Fairly well in that great.
24:01
I didn't up morning fairly well.
24:06
Fairly well.
24:22
Thank you, fellas. Wow. I didn't really think this. I should ask y'all to go last. We could've warmed the crowd up a little bit for you.
24:33
Now, I am very very appreciative. Thank you for being here. Appreciate y'all doing that. It is Memorial Day. I I think y'all figured it out from the song service.
24:43
No doubt. Memorial Day weekend and people are coming in and crowd is here. The square is full but Memorial Day primarily is about remembering those that have been lost in the service of this country. In 1991, I was 19, gonna be 20, started school, and when the war started in 1991, we were all watching it on CNN, you know. 1991, the Gulf War, two ninety four lives were lost in that little war.
25:18
It didn't last very long. It's within the same year and it was a fairly easy defeat as American wars have gone but two ninety four people lost their lives and their families. Grieved them. So, 294 for the Gulf War. I was 19 right at the age of the draft and after Vietnam, they decided that being in college was not going to be a deferment.
25:39
So, I was really considering this because I was A one. I don't have flat feet. I don't have anything that would keep me from going. Two hundred ninety four people died in that one. Philippine American war, most of us don't remember.
25:53
There are four thousand one hundred and ninety six people lost in that three year little skirmish. The Iraq war or Afghanistan wars, Brian's son, Michael went. Between 2001 and the present, 6,700, this is the latest information I had available. 6,717 lives have been lost in that conflict in Central Asia and The Middle East. Y'all know some of those people.
26:20
I know some of those people. Michael knew some of those guys. 6,717 soldiers died. They're not dying. They died.
26:33
There. The Mexican American war. I think we've gotten over it. We're good. I think we've gotten over the Mexican American war but 13,283 American lives were lost there and more than that of Mexican lives.
26:48
The war of eighteen twelve was 15,000. Men, mainly men that were lost in the war of eighteen twelve. I I was kind of surprised that the revolutionary war, only 25,000 but the percentage of how many people were here at the time that were calling themselves Americans, 25, zero lost their lives in the American Revolutionary War. The Korean War, there are a lot of folks in this room that remember the Korean War and love. You probably remember somebody that went, that didn't come back and we're thinking about those today who have died.
27:21
It's not Veterans Day. Veterans Day is for all who have ever served but Memorial Day is for those who have died. 54, zero lives were lost in Korea, in the Korean War. Vietnam War, my dad was drafted into the service and spent a year in Vietnam in combat as a as a mortar mortar guy in the first calf. 58,000 lives are lost and the bar jay sings a song about the the Vietnam Memorial Wall.
27:53
Have y'all been to Washington DC and walked that memorial where you you walk down into a valley. It gets lower and lower and the wall beside you gets higher and higher and it's a dark black wall with names engraved on it. 58,209 names engraved on that wall and you walk into the depth of it and then you start walking back up year by year going in, and then lessening as it comes back out. And that one sticks with me because my dad was there. He didn't talk about it when I was little, but he started talking about it more recently.
28:23
And they have reunions, and I've been to a couple of them. They're threatening to come out here next year. I'm looking forward to that. Fifty eight thousand two hundred and nine people, and he knew some of those guys that died there. World War one, a 116,000.
28:38
It's a brutal, brutal war. 516 people died there. World War two, closing in on half a million people. 405,399 American lives lost in combat in World War two. That's a lot.
28:56
But the whole reason that I share these is because of this one, the American Civil War. Now, seven hundred and fifty thousand people died. Three quarters of a million people died. The percentage was two point three percent of the population of this country. And since and I know we're I mean, a lot of y'all are Southerns.
29:17
We call it the war of northern aggression, and you can argue about what it was really about or not. But at the end of the war, when it was decided that this country was indivisible, everybody who died whether they wore a blue uniform or a gray uniform is an American. So, this includes the totals from both sides of that war. 750,000. Now, the reason I am moved by this, I had heard a story but sometimes when you hear preacher stories, you better check your facts because the preachers tend to just make stuff up.
29:48
So, I'm not doing that. I had to verify the facts of this but the history of Memorial Day and I will call this a history of Memorial Day. It's not the history because both sides, the Southern Confederates and the the union side had their own versions of Memorial Day before we ever came to the concept as a nation of having a Memorial Day. So, a history of it is this, both sides would go the North, they called it decoration day and in the South, they called it a Memorial Day and this is a copy of the 1867 Atlantic Monthly Bound and you know, that sitting on the shelves at the Atlantic somewhere and this page from it is a poem. I have forgotten the poet's name.
30:32
I'm sorry. We can look it up. Somebody can Google it if you want to on your phone. I'll pretend you're looking at your Bible. The blue and the gray, this is in 1867 in about April and it has a line right there at the beginning before the poem that's from the New York Tribune.
30:50
It says, the women of Columbus, Mississippi, animated by nobler sentiments than are many of their sisters have shown themselves impartial in their offerings made to the memory of the dead. They strewed flowers alike on the graves of the confederate and of the national or union soldiers. So they already were celebrating and placing flowers on the graves of their loved ones, but they recognized that those union soldiers had families that loved their families just as much. And so they spread flowers equally over both sets. And hearing that story, this poet was moved.
31:28
I'll just read the first stanza. By the flow of the inland river, whence the fleets of iron have fled, where the blades of the grave grass quiver, asleep are the ranks of the dead, under the sod and the dew, waiting the judgement day. Under the one, the blue, under the other, the gray. I had to start off this way, didn't Just got myself crying before I ever get to the scripture we're going to talk about today. Romans six one to 14, I I I wrestled with this week and I wrestled with it because there are a lot of different ways that I could present and preach this but it's Memorial Day and Memorial Day is the day that we remember the dead and we think about the the price that was paid.
32:13
We think about the cost that they paid to secure us our freedom and so Romans six falls right in line with that and I feel like it's too good a passage to try to divert or do something else. So, we're gonna get into that. I wanna talk about before I get there though, There are a couple of things that I think Paul points out that if you misunderstand him or if you misunderstand this, it can cause a lot of damage, not just to you but to a lot of other people too. So I wanna talk about a binary function. Y'all know what a binary function is.
32:46
If I mentioned it in the first service, they always think of computers. It's zeros and ones. Binary function for y'all might be switches on or off. There are two. It's not like there's a continuum.
32:58
It's not varying degrees. It's either black or white. It's either on or off. It's either a zero or one. It's binary and as far as our position in Christ goes, it's a binary function.
33:10
Our position before God is a binary function. You are either one or the other. Now, back in Paul's day, when he wrote to the Romans, most people are used to hearing you were either Jew or Gentile. You were one of the other. You're either a Jew or you're a Gentile and it's binary.
33:25
There was not a middle ground in between. Last week, when we were at the end of chapter five in Romans, identification with Christ was contrasted against identification with Adam and I told you that if you choose not to decide, you still have made a choice. According to one song by Rush. Identification when Adam is where we all start off. Every single one of us is born identifying with Adam.
33:50
We have passed down to us his original sin. I used the Hungarian proverb last week of Adam ate the apple but our teeth still ache. So, we still have the remnants of that. All of us identify with Adam to begin with but after the gospel witness comes to us and we see the sacrifice that Christ has made in his death and we choose to accept that for our benefit, his substitutionary atonement, then, we can identify with Christ but Paul's gonna go in this chapter about how it is that you actually identify with Christ. So, identification with Christ and identification with Adam, that's binary.
34:29
Positionally, you are either identified with one or the other. Everybody starts out here. Some people will accept the provision Christ made and as Christians, a lot of times we fall into this. We call ourselves, those who identify with Christ, Christians. The Bible calls us that and that's fine but we also tend to identify those who are not Christians as non Christians.
34:53
So, we define them according to our terms for ourselves. Does that make sense? It makes sense and it's a little off putting if you're not a Christian. If you hear believer, but you're an unbeliever. That's a little off putting.
35:07
Everybody believes in something. I just want you to consider this, alright? If you hear saved, we're saved and you're unsaved. It's true. Positionally, it's true.
35:18
Positionally but I don't want for y'all to fall into the habit of thinking that this is a good tool to use with somebody who's outside of the knowledge of Christ, okay? God is gracious and loving and whereas this might be true to say this this way may not be loving and Paul says, we should speak the truth and love. Now, the non binary function that we have here is in our actual everyday practice. How many of you believe that at the moment that you accepted the gospel of Jesus Christ, you immediately became perfect? None of you.
35:54
Good. So, it's not a binary function. You're not lost and then all of a sudden, you know everything and you're just like God. You know, everything. No.
36:07
It's a non binary function. Our practice actually is a lot more gray than it is black and white. Hopefully, it's going from darkness into light. Positionally, as soon as you accept, yes, you're saved. But in practice, most people don't immediately just go, hey, holy, holy, holy.
36:28
Alright. Practice. A while back, it's been a couple of years now. I was preaching a sermon. I hit this place and I drew a little diagram afterwards.
36:36
This is from second Thessalonians two thirteen to 15 and Paul is kind of telling about a timeline really. That's the way I took it and I'll show you the diagram in just a minute and he's writing to Christians and actually he's writing to Christians in this book who don't have big problems with sin. He's bragging on him because they just get it. You know, and they just spread the word that hey, like a beggar, telling another beggar where he found bread, they're just spreading the good news of Jesus. So, Paul says in second Thessalonians chapter two, but we ought always to thank God for you brothers and sisters, those beloved by the Lord because God chose you as the first fruits to be saved through the sanctifying work of the spirit and through belief in the truth.
37:19
So, right there, that belief in the truth, that acknowledges the binary function of your position but the sanctifying work of the spirit says that you're not all the way there immediately. Sanctification is the process of becoming more and more like Christ through your humble submission. So, he that called you to this through his our gospel that you might share in the glory of our Lord Jesus Christ. So then, brothers and sisters, stand firm and hold fast to the teachings that we passed on to you whether by word-of-mouth or by letter. So, you remember the slide?
37:55
So, it says that God chose the way that it would be from the beginning and he chose the process. Under his sovereignty, he chose the process by which one can be saved and that is through Christ's work. His life, his death, burial, resurrection, and ascension. Christ's work. It says that he has finished his work, that he is sitting at the right hand of the father interceding for us.
38:21
So, through Christ's work, anybody who comes to be saved will be saved. The gospel witness that is the good news witness of what Christ has done makes it possible for us to hear it and believe it. So, at the moment that you believe, one is saved and that's what it says. One is saved right there. At the moment you believe, binary function goes from off to on, from black to white, from lost to saved.
38:51
If you have to say it that way. But the sanctification process acknowledges and this where it says, you will be saved on the day of the Lord. If you look in the rest of Thessalonians, you'll see it. There is going to be that great getting up morning, fairly well, fairly well. There's going to be a great getting up morning when Christ shall return and you will be completely sanctified.
39:16
In fact, glorified is what it's called. You will be glorified. But this process right here is the gray in the middle and it is the work of the Holy Spirit. No one is righteous. No, not one, not any of us.
39:31
No matter how long you've been in church. Does not matter. The sanctification goes something like this. At the moment of your belief, you do come from darkness into light but in your actual practice, you might not have any idea. I remember one guy saying, I don't even know what I think about politics anymore.
39:51
It's been so long that I felt this way and argue this position but I don't feel that way anymore. It was just changed on a couple of issues and he said, it's going to take me a while to figure it out. Yes, it is. That process is called sanctification. I'm not saying one party is better than other.
40:08
I'm just saying in his mind, he had some issues that he was like, I gotta rethink my whole situation here. The renewing of your minds and you may go backwards. You may gain ground for a while and you may lose ground for a while but this sanctification process as we are surrendered to the work of the Holy Spirit in our lives, he will be more and more ever increasingly bringing us on an upward trajectory towards that day when ultimately we will be completely safe, glorified, meet him in the air. Okay, are you with me? So far so good.
40:42
We can get back to the scripture. No, we still got a little bit more. Alright. So, I brought this from first Corinthians. In first Corinthians, this is the main thesis sentence for the whole book of first Corinthians and it says, for the message of the cross is foolishness to those who are perishing but to those who are being saved, it's the power of God.
41:00
Now, that is a binary thing right there, right? It is binary but look at this, those who are perishing, it acknowledges that there is a gradual progression towards the perishing and it says, to those who are being saved, it's a continual action. God is still working on you. You're not completely sanctified at the moment that you believed. You are positionally.
41:26
When God looks down from above and sees us for those who have believed, he sees the righteousness of Christ. Paul says, he gives that as a gift. He reckons us. He imputes to us the righteousness of Christ and so he sees us. Send free.
41:46
He sees Jesus in us. Now, Paul will go on from here. Let's look at the message of the cross slide. There it is. To those who are perishing and to those who are being saved.
41:56
It's binary. It's foolishness to one but it's the power of God unto salvation and is that upward trajectory for all who believe. So, here we are at the scripture for today. Romans six one through four. We're going to 14.
42:12
It says the same thing over and over, okay? These verses say the same thing over and over. There's a lot in here about death. Since it's Memorial Day, I thought that very appropriate to hang on to it. Romans six is seeking to answer after all that he has done in Romans one through five.
42:30
He's shown that no one is righteous, no not one. Good little Christian boys and girls that grew up in church and those who didn't, no one's righteous. No, not one. Jewish little boys and girls that knew the since way before. Nope.
42:44
Little people, big people, does not matter. No one is righteous. No, not one. He makes that abundantly clear in the first couple of chapters. Pagans or Jews.
42:57
He gets to the part that God is good and he is gracious and he is only made one way. It is by the blood of Jesus on the cross. That's the message of the cross. That sounds like foolishness to those who are perishing but it's the power of God to those who being are being saved. He also then says, and your justification or you're being saved by grace is through faith.
43:19
So, justification by faith in God's grace is a dangerous proposition. If it's true that it's actually grace, that means we didn't earn it. It's unmerited favor, completely unmerited. So if I hadn't gotten saved when I got saved, I could've kept on sinning and gotten saved now and been fine. Y'all ever seen Oh Brother Where Art Thel?
43:46
I love that movie. There's one point where one of the guys, I think it's Delmar says, whoo. Man, jacking up banks. So, I can see how where a fellow derive a lot of pleasure from that because it sounds like fun. Robin Banks and then he says, it almost makes me wish I hadn't got baptized and saved.
44:05
Are we to continue in sin so that grace may increase? This is what theologians would call. Paul is answering the antinomian objection. Those who feel like if grace is true, then the law has absolutely no benefit whatsoever and you are going to have absolute chaos in the streets because once people figure out that the grace for past, present, and future sins exist and they have it, whoo, they're going to run reckless. They're going to run wild.
44:36
They're going to jack up banks. They're going to do whatever they want to do. But Paul says, what shall we say then? Are we to continue in sin so that grace may increase? And he says, Meganoito in Greek which means, may it never be.
44:48
Absolutely not. No way. Can't be. Absolutely not. Shutter to think impossible, banish the thought.
44:56
Okay, may it never be. How shall we who died? Past tense. How shall we who died? Past tense.
45:09
These guys and this lady right here, this lady is decorating graves on Memorial Day. Sydney J. Marceau is not doing anything because Sydney J. Marceau is dead. He's not continuing in anything right here, right now, in the real tangible, earthy world.
45:29
William Jackson the third right there, not doing anything. Now, she is remembering those who have fallen and what their sacrifices brought for her but they're not doing anything because they're dead. So, here's what the scripture says, how shall we who die to sin still live in The dying to sin part becomes more clear the further we go. So, I'll keep going or do you not know that all of us, every single one of us who have been baptized into Christ Jesus have been baptized into his death. What we're baptized into is not into a church.
46:03
We're baptized into the death of Jesus. Jesus lived the only perfect life that has ever been lived. He's the only one who had the possibility of offering that righteousness to anyone else. And when he died on the cross, he died to break the power of sin. When he did that, we are saying by our baptism, not just our water baptism.
46:28
When we are identifying with Christ, this passage says, the way you identify with him is to be changed, to be baptized into Christ Jesus. Actually, I used an example this morning, Florine Light. The words for and last week, I used this because we baptized Elisa Walkup and Elisa Walkup is a little girl. She's 10 years old and she I I took her and I said, buried with Christ and raised to walk in newness of life which is the next verse. Verse four.
46:57
And it's a symbol of an outward symbol of an inward change that's already happened. Now, there are two words in Greek that mean baptized. One of them is bapto and bapto means to dip like you would dip something and baptizo means not just that you would dip something but how that thing has experienced an actual change. It has become different. So, the example I use this morning is from outside of the Bible but early Greek literature, Koine Greek and as you can dip a cucumber in water but if you dip it in brining solution and you leave it there, then, you change that cucumber and it becomes a pickle.
47:32
That make sense? So, I used, I think that baptism and by immersion is what the Bible kind of says. That's what it points to. I don't care whether you get baptized by sprinkling, dispersion, infusion. Does not matter to me but I do care whether you are actually changed and the correct order for baptism would be once someone has experienced that, their identification with Adam, they don't want, they won't identify with Christ and there's been a change, that's when you baptize In water.
48:05
So, do you not know that all of us who have been baptized or changed leaning into, identifying with Christ Jesus have been identified with him in his death. The death that was a death to conquer the power of sin. Therefore, we have been buried with him through baptism into death. We're baptized or changed into his death, killing off the sin. So that as Christ was raised from the dead through the glory of the father in the same way through the glory of the father by his spirit, we too might walk in newness of life.
48:41
Now, the might right there acknowledges that it's great. It's not binary for you to walk in newness of life is not an automatic just because you accepted Christ. You still have your will. It follows you around. The sovereignty of God is very strong and the will of man, oh my goodness, is also very strong and you can resist.
49:02
Some people resist and don't ever accept and they stay identified with Adam. Some people accept Christ but increasingly see the things that are not Christ like in their life and have to humbly allow those things to go. So, we might too walk, might walk in the newness of life. Now, look at died, death, death, and dead. He spends a lot of time now.
49:24
Next week or maybe the next week, I'm going to talk about not just the died, death, death, and dead but the alive to walk in newness of life part of this but since it was Memorial Day, I wanted to stop and hang out here for a minute. Wreck in these things. Count em. Think about em. Paul says in verse five, if we have become united with him in the likeness of his death, certainly, we shall also be in the likeness of his resurrection.
49:51
He's saying, we're identifying with his death, having died for sins even though he didn't commit any and we are accepting that and then, we want to walk just as he came out through the power of God, all the sin in the world laid on him, death was still not strong enough to hold him in the grave. God by his spirit raised him from the dead. Certainly, we shall also be with him in the likeness of his resurrection, raised to walk in newness of life and knowing this, our old self was crucified with him. Do you remember I've told you several times while you're going through Galatians that Galatians is a really good sketch for Romans. Galatians two twenty, Paul personalizes this.
50:31
It's not just we like it is here or our old self. Paul is saying personally for himself in Galatians two twenty. I, Paul, have been crucified with Christ. The word right there, all that crucified with Christ is one word in Greek and it means to be crucified in tandem with. It is as if the nails that went through Jesus's hands and feet also went through our hands and feet and we were on the cross with him.
50:56
That our sin was nailed to that cross. Paul says, it's no longer I who live but Christ lives in me and in the life which I now live in the flesh, admittedly in the flesh. I live by faith in the son of God who love me and gave himself up for me. Knowing this that our old self was crucified with him in order that our body of sin might be done away with so that we would no longer be slaves to sin for he has died. He who has died is freed.
51:21
He's completely acquitted from all sin when he's died. For if we've become united with him, wait a second. Here it is. Now, if we have died with Christ and I'm going to say again, Paul says, I have been crucified. That's a past tense thing.
51:38
If we have died with Christ, we believe that we shall also live with him. Christ was raised from the dead. Knowing that Christ having been raised from the dead is never to die again. Death is no longer master over him. Do you all remember hearing that when Jesus was in the Garden Of Gethsemane and he was praying and he's praying so profusely that he's sweating drops of blood and he prays, lord, if it be possible for this to be any other way accomplished, let's do that.
52:09
But if not, your will, not mine be done. That was humility and I believe that Christ had the very real fear of death hanging over him. He was at his completely most human point right there where he was praying. Lord, not my will but yours be done. Death no longer master over him.
52:30
When he were arose from the grave, there was no doubt. Death does not win. For the death that he died, he died to sin once for all but the life that he lives, he lives to God or he lives in a godward direction. Verse 10 says in 11, even so, consider yourselves to be dead to sin but alive to God and Jesus Christ. The consider right there is normally translated I think in the King James, it's reckon.
52:56
I like reckon. I like the word reckon. I reckon all the time. So, even so, reckon yourself to be. Count yourselves.
53:04
It's an accounting term. Reckon yourselves to be dead to sin. Paul is saying, yeah, positionally, you're right but as you walk, you're going to be tempted. Consider that that is past. That is what Jesus paid for.
53:18
That is something that we can leave behind. Even so, reckon yourselves or consider yourselves to be dead to sin but alive to God in Christ Jesus and this is the first time we hit imperatives, okay? Imperative verb tenses are commands. They're direct command tenses and so at this point is the place where Paul finally gets to a direct kind of do this or don't do that. Now, I say this and I'd say it kind of not sheepishly because the word says it, no doubt about it but I don't want for you to think that the whole Bible or God forbid that church services are always about dos and don't dos.
53:56
I think that that's binary thinking too. I think it's more about the attitude of the heart and about humility. Paul says, right here, do not let or do not allow sin to reign, to be your master. Do not allow sin to reign in your mortal mortal body so that you obey all of its lust. Now, this is an answer to that question.
54:23
What shall we say? Are we to continue in sin so that grace may increase? Meganoito. May it never be. He gives us an imperative.
54:31
Don't let sin reign and don't go on presenting the members of your body to sin as instruments of unrighteousness but present yourselves to God as those who are alive from the dead. And your members as instruments of the righteousness of God. God can use absolutely everything that you've ever been through and he does. He uses all the hard stuff, all of the stuff, and when that lady was sitting there and she's remembering the dead and laying out the flowers, She's remembering fallen heroes who died so that she may live in freedom. In Christianity, we have but one hero.
55:09
And he died so that we may live in freedom. Verse 14 says, for sin shall not be master over you. Now, all the other stuff about died was past tense, died, death, died, died, died, all past tense. This is the first future tense that we've seen. Sin shall not be master over you.
55:28
This is pointing back to my graph or my timeline up there where that ultimate glorification and ultimate day of the Lord, that great getting up morning, it's pointing towards that. Sin shall not be master over you because you're not under law but under grace. It's really really about God's grace. No matter what has gone on and that's for the legalist as much as it's for the licentious one. It's for both.
55:58
Sin shall not be master over you. You're not under law but under grace. Would y'all stand with us? Judy's going to come up and play and actually, I think we're singing God bless America for the closing one. That's not exactly what I'm preaching about but it kind of is.
56:14
We do pray for God's blessing because if it doesn't happen from him, nobody else is going be blessing it. Would you stand with us, Scott? If you want to come on up forward, we're going to sing it.
56:38
God bless America land that I love. Stand beside her and guide her through the night with the light from above from the mountains to the prairie to the oceans white with home God bless America my home sweet
57:34
Amen. And I have one more slide up here and it points to the mystery here. First Timothy three sixteen. Now, second Timothy three sixteen, every Iwana kid in here knows is that all scriptures God breathe but first Timothy three sixteen says, by common confession, great is the mystery of godliness. How can you be both binary and non binary at the same time?
57:58
How can it be that you are either a Christian or not a Christian but both of em can act exactly the same. Christians, for those of you who are on that upward trajectory, I praise God. For those of you who are dangling and coming down in that trajectory right now, I'll pray for you. I'll pray for me. Y'all pray for me too.
58:26
It's a mystery how this can be. This is probably one of the earliest hymns of the church. He who was revealed in the flesh, that's Christ, born of a virgin, revealed in the flesh, had to live in this life just like we have to live in it. He had choices before him. He happened to make all the right choices.
58:44
He was revealed in the flesh. He was vindicated by the spirit or justified by the spirit. He always was obedient to the spirit of God. He was seen by angels. He's proclaimed among the nations.
58:57
He's believed on in the world and he has been taken up in the glory and Paul says, if we are baptized, changed into those who are identifying with Christ. We'll be taken up in the glory with him. It's a mystery though how this is. God, would you go with us this week and would you show us your upward way? Would you help us as we struggle with the non binary stuff of life?
59:25
In Jesus name, would you guide us from the darkness to the light? Amen.
