Scripture referenced 8 passages

The passage this message was preached from, in full, with every other passage it reached for.

  • Mark 5:21-43 main passage read and discussed, covering the healing of the bleeding woman and the raising of Jairus's daughter

21 When Jesus had crossed back over in the boat to the other side, a great multitude was gathered to him; and he was by the sea.

22 Behold, one of the rulers of the synagogue, Jairus by name, came; and seeing him, he fell at his feet,

23 and begged him much, saying, “My little daughter is at the point of death. Please come and lay your hands on her, that she may be made healthy, and live.”

24 He went with him, and a great multitude followed him, and they pressed upon him on all sides.

25 A certain woman, who had an issue of blood for twelve years,

26 and had suffered many things by many physicians, and had spent all that she had, and was no better, but rather grew worse,

27 having heard the things concerning Jesus, came up behind him in the crowd, and touched his clothes.

28 For she said, “If I just touch his clothes, I will be made well.”

29 Immediately the flow of her blood was dried up, and she felt in her body that she was healed of her affliction.

30 Immediately Jesus, perceiving in himself that the power had gone out from him, turned around in the crowd, and asked, “Who touched my clothes?”

31 His disciples said to him, “You see the multitude pressing against you, and you say, ‘Who touched me?’”

32 He looked around to see her who had done this thing.

33 But the woman, fearing and trembling, knowing what had been done to her, came and fell down before him, and told him all the truth.

34 He said to her, “Daughter, your faith has made you well. Go in peace, and be cured of your disease.”

35 While he was still speaking, people came from the synagogue ruler’s house saying, “Your daughter is dead. Why bother the Teacher any more?”

36 But Jesus, when he heard the message spoken, immediately said to the ruler of the synagogue, “Don’t be afraid, only believe.”

37 He allowed no one to follow him, except Peter, James, and John the brother of James.

38 He came to the synagogue ruler’s house, and he saw an uproar, weeping, and great wailing.

39 When he had entered in, he said to them, “Why do you make an uproar and weep? The child is not dead, but is asleep.”

40 They ridiculed him. But he, having put them all out, took the father of the child, her mother, and those who were with him, and went in where the child was lying.

41 Taking the child by the hand, he said to her, “Talitha cumi!” which means, being interpreted, “Girl, I tell you, get up!”

42 Immediately the girl rose up and walked, for she was twelve years old. They were amazed with great amazement.

43 He strictly ordered them that no one should know this, and commanded that something should be given to her to eat.

Psalm 34

quoted and partially sung: 'I sought the Lord and he answered me and delivered me from all my fears'

1 I will bless Yahweh at all times. His praise will always be in my mouth.

2 My soul shall boast in Yahweh. The humble shall hear of it, and be glad.

3 Oh magnify Yahweh with me. Let us exalt his name together.

4 I sought Yahweh, and he answered me, and delivered me from all my fears.

5 They looked to him, and were radiant. Their faces shall never be covered with shame.

6 This poor man cried, and Yahweh heard him, and saved him out of all his troubles.

7 Yahweh’s angel encamps around those who fear him, and delivers them.

8 Oh taste and see that Yahweh is good. Blessed is the man who takes refuge in him.

9 Oh fear Yahweh, you his saints, for there is no lack with those who fear him.

10 The young lions do lack, and suffer hunger, but those who seek Yahweh shall not lack any good thing.

11 Come, you children, listen to me. I will teach you the fear of Yahweh.

12 Who is someone who desires life, and loves many days, that he may see good?

13 Keep your tongue from evil, and your lips from speaking lies.

14 Depart from evil, and do good. seek peace, and pursue it.

15 Yahweh’s eyes are toward the righteous. His ears listen to their cry.

16 Yahweh’s face is against those who do evil, to cut off their memory from the earth.

17 The righteous cry, and Yahweh hears, and delivers them out of all their troubles.

18 Yahweh is near to those who have a broken heart, and saves those who have a crushed spirit.

19 Many are the afflictions of the righteous, but Yahweh delivers him out of them all.

20 He protects all of his bones. Not one of them is broken.

21 Evil shall kill the wicked. Those who hate the righteous shall be condemned.

22 Yahweh redeems the soul of his servants. None of those who take refuge in him shall be condemned.

14 Is any among you sick? Let him call for the elders of the assembly, and let them pray over him, anointing him with oil in the name of the Lord,

Exodus 14

referenced via a rabbinic tradition interpreting the Israelites entering the sea up to their nostrils before the waters divided

1 Yahweh spoke to Moses, saying,

2 “Speak to the children of Israel, that they turn back and encamp before Pihahiroth, between Migdol and the sea, before Baal Zephon. You shall encamp opposite it by the sea.

3 Pharaoh will say of the children of Israel, ‘They are entangled in the land. The wilderness has shut them in.’

4 I will harden Pharaoh’s heart, and he will follow after them; and I will get honor over Pharaoh, and over all his armies; and the Egyptians shall know that I am Yahweh.” They did so.

5 The king of Egypt was told that the people had fled; and the heart of Pharaoh and of his servants was changed towards the people, and they said, “What is this we have done, that we have let Israel go from serving us?”

6 He prepared his chariot, and took his army with him;

7 and he took six hundred chosen chariots, and all the chariots of Egypt, and captains over all of them.

8 Yahweh hardened the heart of Pharaoh king of Egypt, and he pursued the children of Israel; for the children of Israel went out with a high hand.

9 The Egyptians pursued them. All the horses and chariots of Pharaoh, his horsemen, and his army overtook them encamping by the sea, beside Pihahiroth, before Baal Zephon.

10 When Pharaoh came near, the children of Israel lifted up their eyes, and behold, the Egyptians were marching after them; and they were very afraid. The children of Israel cried out to Yahweh.

11 They said to Moses, “Because there were no graves in Egypt, have you taken us away to die in the wilderness? Why have you treated us this way, to bring us out of Egypt?

12 Isn’t this the word that we spoke to you in Egypt, saying, ‘Leave us alone, that we may serve the Egyptians?’ For it would have been better for us to serve the Egyptians than to die in the wilderness.”

13 Moses said to the people, “Don’t be afraid. Stand still, and see the salvation of Yahweh, which he will work for you today: for the Egyptians whom you have seen today, you shall never see them again.

14 Yahweh will fight for you, and you shall be still.”

15 Yahweh said to Moses, “Why do you cry to me? Speak to the children of Israel, that they go forward.

16 Lift up your rod, and stretch out your hand over the sea, and divide it: and the children of Israel shall go into the middle of the sea on dry ground.

17 Behold, I myself will harden the hearts of the Egyptians, and they shall go in after them: and I will get myself honor over Pharaoh, and over all his armies, over his chariots, and over his horsemen.

18 The Egyptians shall know that I am Yahweh, when I have gotten myself honor over Pharaoh, over his chariots, and over his horsemen.”

19 The angel of God, who went before the camp of Israel, moved and went behind them; and the pillar of cloud moved from before them, and stood behind them.

20 It came between the camp of Egypt and the camp of Israel; and there was the cloud and the darkness, yet gave it light by night: and one didn’t come near the other all night.

21 Moses stretched out his hand over the sea, and Yahweh caused the sea to go back by a strong east wind all night, and made the sea dry land, and the waters were divided.

22 The children of Israel went into the middle of the sea on the dry ground, and the waters were a wall to them on their right hand, and on their left.

23 The Egyptians pursued, and went in after them into the middle of the sea: all of Pharaoh’s horses, his chariots, and his horsemen.

24 In the morning watch, Yahweh looked out on the Egyptian army through the pillar of fire and of cloud, and confused the Egyptian army.

25 He took off their chariot wheels, and they drove them heavily; so that the Egyptians said, “Let’s flee from the face of Israel, for Yahweh fights for them against the Egyptians!”

26 Yahweh said to Moses, “Stretch out your hand over the sea, that the waters may come again on the Egyptians, on their chariots, and on their horsemen.”

27 Moses stretched out his hand over the sea, and the sea returned to its strength when the morning appeared; and the Egyptians fled against it. Yahweh overthrew the Egyptians in the middle of the sea.

28 The waters returned, and covered the chariots and the horsemen, even all Pharaoh’s army that went in after them into the sea. There remained not so much as one of them.

29 But the children of Israel walked on dry land in the middle of the sea, and the waters were a wall to them on their right hand, and on their left.

30 Thus Yahweh saved Israel that day out of the hand of the Egyptians; and Israel saw the Egyptians dead on the seashore.

31 Israel saw the great work which Yahweh did to the Egyptians, and the people feared Yahweh; and they believed in Yahweh, and in his servant Moses.

Luke 12

quoted briefly: 'Don't be afraid, little flock, for it gives your father great happiness to give you the kingdom.'

1 Meanwhile, when a multitude of many thousands had gathered together, so much so that they trampled on each other, he began to tell his disciples first of all, “Beware of the yeast of the Pharisees, which is hypocrisy.

2 But there is nothing covered up, that will not be revealed, nor hidden, that will not be known.

3 Therefore whatever you have said in the darkness will be heard in the light. What you have spoken in the ear in the inner rooms will be proclaimed on the housetops.

4 “I tell you, my friends, don’t be afraid of those who kill the body, and after that have no more that they can do.

5 But I will warn you whom you should fear. Fear him, who after he has killed, has power to cast into Gehenna. Yes, I tell you, fear him.

6 “Aren’t five sparrows sold for two assaria coins? Not one of them is forgotten by God.

7 But the very hairs of your head are all counted. Therefore don’t be afraid. You are of more value than many sparrows.

8 “I tell you, everyone who confesses me before men, him will the Son of Man also confess before the angels of God;

9 but he who denies me in the presence of men will be denied in the presence of the angels of God.

10 Everyone who speaks a word against the Son of Man will be forgiven, but those who blaspheme against the Holy Spirit will not be forgiven.

11 When they bring you before the synagogues, the rulers, and the authorities, don’t be anxious how or what you will answer, or what you will say;

12 for the Holy Spirit will teach you in that same hour what you must say.”

13 One of the multitude said to him, “Teacher, tell my brother to divide the inheritance with me.”

14 But he said to him, “Man, who made me a judge or an arbitrator over you?”

15 He said to them, “Beware! Keep yourselves from covetousness, for a man’s life doesn’t consist of the abundance of the things which he possesses.”

16 He spoke a parable to them, saying, “The ground of a certain rich man produced abundantly.

17 He reasoned within himself, saying, ‘What will I do, because I don’t have room to store my crops?’

18 He said, ‘This is what I will do. I will pull down my barns, and build bigger ones, and there I will store all my grain and my goods.

19 I will tell my soul, “Soul, you have many goods laid up for many years. Take your ease, eat, drink, be merry.”’

20 “But God said to him, ‘You foolish one, tonight your soul is required of you. The things which you have prepared—whose will they be?’

21 So is he who lays up treasure for himself, and is not rich toward God.”

22 He said to his disciples, “Therefore I tell you, don’t be anxious for your life, what you will eat, nor yet for your body, what you will wear.

23 Life is more than food, and the body is more than clothing.

24 Consider the ravens: they don’t sow, they don’t reap, they have no warehouse or barn, and God feeds them. How much more valuable are you than birds!

25 Which of you by being anxious can add a cubit to his height?

26 If then you aren’t able to do even the least things, why are you anxious about the rest?

27 Consider the lilies, how they grow. They don’t toil, neither do they spin; yet I tell you, even Solomon in all his glory was not arrayed like one of these.

28 But if this is how God clothes the grass in the field, which today exists, and tomorrow is cast into the oven, how much more will he clothe you, O you of little faith?

29 Don’t seek what you will eat or what you will drink; neither be anxious.

30 For the nations of the world seek after all of these things, but your Father knows that you need these things.

31 But seek God’s Kingdom, and all these things will be added to you.

32 Don’t be afraid, little flock, for it is your Father’s good pleasure to give you the Kingdom.

33 Sell that which you have, and give gifts to the needy. Make for yourselves purses which don’t grow old, a treasure in the heavens that doesn’t fail, where no thief approaches, neither moth destroys.

34 For where your treasure is, there will your heart be also.

35 “Let your waist be dressed and your lamps burning.

36 Be like men watching for their lord, when he returns from the marriage feast; that, when he comes and knocks, they may immediately open to him.

37 Blessed are those servants, whom the lord will find watching when he comes. Most certainly I tell you, that he will dress himself, and make them recline, and will come and serve them.

38 They will be blessed if he comes in the second or third watch, and finds them so.

39 But know this, that if the master of the house had known in what hour the thief was coming, he would have watched, and not allowed his house to be broken into.

40 Therefore be ready also, for the Son of Man is coming in an hour that you don’t expect him.”

41 Peter said to him, “Lord, are you telling this parable to us, or to everybody?”

42 The Lord said, “Who then is the faithful and wise steward, whom his lord will set over his household, to give them their portion of food at the right times?

43 Blessed is that servant whom his lord will find doing so when he comes.

44 Truly I tell you, that he will set him over all that he has.

45 But if that servant says in his heart, ‘My lord delays his coming,’ and begins to beat the menservants and the maidservants, and to eat and drink, and to be drunken,

46 then the lord of that servant will come in a day when he isn’t expecting him, and in an hour that he doesn’t know, and will cut him in two, and place his portion with the unfaithful.

47 That servant, who knew his lord’s will, and didn’t prepare, nor do what he wanted, will be beaten with many stripes,

48 but he who didn’t know, and did things worthy of stripes, will be beaten with few stripes. To whomever much is given, of him will much be required; and to whom much was entrusted, of him more will be asked.

49 “I came to throw fire on the earth. I wish it were already kindled.

50 But I have a baptism to be baptized with, and how distressed I am until it is accomplished!

Psalm 37

closing benediction: 'commit everything that we do to the Lord, to trust him, and he will help us'

1 Don’t fret because of evildoers, neither be envious against those who work unrighteousness.

2 For they shall soon be cut down like the grass, and wither like the green herb.

3 Trust in Yahweh, and do good. Dwell in the land, and enjoy safe pasture.

4 Also delight yourself in Yahweh, and he will give you the desires of your heart.

5 Commit your way to Yahweh. Trust also in him, and he will do this:

6 he will make your righteousness go out as the light, and your justice as the noon day sun.

7 Rest in Yahweh, and wait patiently for him. Don’t fret because of him who prospers in his way, because of the man who makes wicked plots happen.

8 Cease from anger, and forsake wrath. Don’t fret, it leads only to evildoing.

9 For evildoers shall be cut off, but those who wait for Yahweh shall inherit the land.

10 For yet a little while, and the wicked will be no more. Yes, though you look for his place, he isn’t there.

11 But the humble shall inherit the land, and shall delight themselves in the abundance of peace.

12 The wicked plots against the just, and gnashes at him with his teeth.

13 The Lord will laugh at him, for he sees that his day is coming.

14 The wicked have drawn out the sword, and have bent their bow, to cast down the poor and needy, to kill those who are upright on the path.

15 Their sword shall enter into their own heart. Their bows shall be broken.

16 Better is a little that the righteous has, than the abundance of many wicked.

17 For the arms of the wicked shall be broken, but Yahweh upholds the righteous.

18 Yahweh knows the days of the perfect. Their inheritance shall be forever.

19 They shall not be disappointed in the time of evil. In the days of famine they shall be satisfied.

20 But the wicked shall perish. The enemies of Yahweh shall be like the beauty of the fields. They will vanish— vanish like smoke.

21 The wicked borrow, and don’t pay back, but the righteous give generously.

22 For such as are blessed by him shall inherit the land. Those who are cursed by him shall be cut off.

23 A man’s goings are established by Yahweh. He delights in his way.

24 Though he stumble, he shall not fall, for Yahweh holds him up with his hand.

25 I have been young, and now am old, yet I have not seen the righteous forsaken, nor his children begging for bread.

26 All day long he deals graciously, and lends. His offspring is blessed.

27 Depart from evil, and do good. Live securely forever.

28 For Yahweh loves justice, and doesn’t forsake his saints. They are preserved forever, but the children of the wicked shall be cut off.

29 The righteous shall inherit the land, and live in it forever.

30 The mouth of the righteous talks of wisdom. His tongue speaks justice.

31 The law of his God is in his heart. None of his steps shall slide.

32 The wicked watches the righteous, and seeks to kill him.

33 Yahweh will not leave him in his hand, nor condemn him when he is judged.

34 Wait for Yahweh, and keep his way, and he will exalt you to inherit the land. When the wicked are cut off, you shall see it.

35 I have seen the wicked in great power, spreading himself like a green tree in its native soil.

36 But he passed away, and behold, he was not. Yes, I sought him, but he could not be found.

37 Mark the perfect man, and see the upright, for there is a future for the man of peace.

38 As for transgressors, they shall be destroyed together. The future of the wicked shall be cut off.

39 But the salvation of the righteous is from Yahweh. He is their stronghold in the time of trouble.

40 Yahweh helps them, and rescues them. He rescues them from the wicked, and saves them, Because they have taken refuge in him.

Recap

The message in order, in a few minutes of reading.

This Monday night study at First B Jackson worked through two miracles in Mark 5, the healing of a bleeding woman and the raising of Jairus's daughter, with the pastor leading the group through the text and opening the floor for conversation afterward. The central thread running through both stories was faith, specifically what it looks like when belief stops being passive and becomes action. The evening closed with the group sharing their own reflections and a song together.

What was said

the pastor opened by setting the scene from the week before. Jesus had just cast demons into a herd of pigs, the crowd had asked him to leave, and he had sent the healed man home to tell what God had done. That context matters because it is the reason Jesus is crossing back to the other side of the lake when this passage begins.

When the reading started, two things were already in motion at once. Jairus, a synagogue leader, had fallen at Jesus's feet begging him to come and heal his dying daughter. And somewhere in the crowd pressing around Jesus on his way to that house, a woman who had been bleeding for twelve years was working her way toward him. The pastor noted that the woman was considered unclean and excluded from public gatherings, which made what she did a risky move. She touched his robe anyway, and the bleeding stopped immediately.

The first takeaway the pastor drew from both of these people was that Jesus answers the call of faith. He pointed to verse 34, where Jesus tells the woman "your faith has made you well," and to verse 36, where he tells Jairus "don't be afraid, just have faith." He connected that to a moment earlier in Mark where a leper said "if you are willing, you can heal me" and Jesus answered "I am willing." The pattern is consistent: Jesus turns toward those who reach out in faith.

The second takeaway was that faith is not just a belief held privately. It moves. Jairus believed Jesus could heal his daughter, and so he walked to Jesus, fell at his feet, and pleaded. The woman believed that touching the robe would be enough, and so she pushed through a crowd to do it. The pastor put it this way from the commentary he had been reading: belief about Jesus does not bring healing, but faith in Jesus that takes action does.

He connected that to James, which the elders at First B have taken seriously in practice. The passage in James calls the sick to bring the elders together to pray and anoint with oil, and promises that a prayer offered in faith will bring healing. After reading Mark 5, the pastor said, he is all the more willing to do exactly that when anyone asks.

The commentary he quoted included a rabbinic tradition about the crossing of the Red Sea, that the waters did not divide until the Israelites had gone in up to their nostrils. The pastor said he did not know whether that tradition is historically accurate, but it had stayed with him all week. Whether or not the detail is right, he said, it captures what this passage is showing: faith does not stand on the bank waiting to see what God will do before it commits. It steps out into the water trusting that God will do what is needed.

In the conversation time, the group added their own observations. Monique noted how Jesus works outside of time and does not compare one person's faith to another's, meeting each person where they are. Nick pointed out that Jesus welcomes people who are raw and not cleaned up, and that the text gives permission to keep bringing the same struggles back to him. The pastor closed by naming what he saw in both Jairus and the woman: a desperate faith that had nowhere else to go, leaning entirely on Jesus rather than on their own resources.

Doing a Bible study?

Here is a guide we have prepared for you: the passages in order, questions for the group, and room to write.

  1. Pastor Nathan pointed out that Jairus and the bleeding woman both believed and then acted on that belief. Where in your own life have you found it hardest to move from belief to action, and what held you back?
  2. The bleeding woman was considered unclean and risked a lot by pressing through the crowd to touch Jesus. Has there been a time when coming to Jesus felt risky or costly for you? What happened?

All over my life. How about you?
Alright.
I think we're set. Hey, everybody. Welcome to another Monday night, and a big thank you to Pamela for dinner tonight. Thank you for for dinner, Pamela, and also to Scottie. Scottie made a little run with me too to the grocery store, and we're making our way through Mark right now, the gospel market.
It's conversation style, so just keep that in mind. If you got a little verse, word of encouragement at the end so we can have a little back and forth. But before we get there, can we worship in song together? I'd love to do that. I'll sing of the Lord's unfailing love forever.
Young and old will hear of his faithfulness. There's a song in my soul.
And there's a song in my soul, and I feel it stirring in me. This I know for sure. And that your love is like a flood and mercy never ending. I give my song to you. There's a joy.
There's a joy in my soul. And it rises like the morning. This I know for sure. That your grace is enough Oh, my soul that sings for you, for all of your goodness. I will love you forever.
All my songs I sing for you. Yes. All my songs I sing for you. And all of your goodness. I will love you forever.
All my songs I'll sing for you. Yes. All my songs I'll sing for you. And let my life in my life be to you a symphony singing out holy,
God, thanks that we get to sing these praises to you. God, you're worthy. You're worthy of our worship, of our adoration, of our praise. God, I pray that the scripture would come to life in us tonight, that these words of yours would come to life in us. That you say, come to me, all of you who are weary and you carry heavy burdens, and I'll give you rest.
Lord, for that very real invitation to us. God, that we would accept.
Come to Jesus and find your way. You want freedom, need forgiveness. Just come The comforter, counselor, prince of peace, author and baker of everything, defender, deliverer, king of kings is. He is helper and healer forevermore, savior and shelter through every storm. Our refuge, redeemer, and lord of lords is.
He is a child of vivid son of man, provider protector the great I am, health on big of beginning and end years. Is hope for the whole place, rest for the weary help for the hurting broken bring the burden
Amen. You can have a a seat here for a moment. I don't have a little remote control, but maybe I could give a clue. How are doing everybody? How's your Monday?
On a scale of one to five, one was awful and five was great. How are how are we doing?
Alright. Okay. Good. That's that's that's alright.
Here we go. The gospel according to Mark. Tonight, we are in chapter five verses 21 to 43. So this is where Jesus heals a bleeding woman, and he restores a girl to life in response to faith. And faith, I believe, is is a a keyword here.
Right out of the gate, I wanna I wanna share this with you. Let me see if this is working. There it is. I wanna share this with you, a couple of takeaways that I had. And I know that you're gonna have some of your own as well, and I wanna hear them during the conversation time.
But here are a couple of mine that jumped out to me. I was just studying this. One being that Jesus answers the call of faith. Seems extremely obvious, but this is very, very important. Jesus does answer the call of faith.
K? And then the other is that faith is demonstrated in belief, but also action. There's belief there, but it turns to action. So those were a couple of my takeaways. During the conversation, Tom, wanna hear yours.
But first, let's go ahead and read it. I wanna see what God has for us this evening. This is what it says. Starts off, Jesus got into the boat again. So for context, last week, we studied that after Jesus healed that demoniac in that region, he sends these demons into a herd of pigs, and then the pigs jump off a cliff and drown.
You Do remember this story? And he... The crowd pleads with Jesus to go away and to leave them alone. Please. We we we...
You're scaring us. Jesus, go away. And so Jesus does go away, but before he goes, he does send that healed man back to his family to tell them what Jesus had done and how merciful he'd been. And that's my favorite part of last week's story. He says go back and tell everyone how merciful they've been.
And he goes back to his family, and he goes to these different towns in the region, and the gospel spreads because of these miracles. So Jesus goes into, gets back into the boat. He goes to the other side of the lake again where a large crowd gathered around him on shore. Large crowds are always gathering around Jesus. Then check out this.
Verse 22. A leader of the local synagogue, whose name was Jairus, arrived. And when he saw Jesus, he fell at his feet, pleading fervently with him. My little daughter is dying, he said. Please come and lay your hands on her.
Heal her so she can live. This is intense. So Jesus went with him, and all the people followed, crowding around him. A woman in the crowd had suffered for twelve years with constant bleeding. She had suffered a great deal from many doctors, and over the years, she had spent everything she had to pay them.
But she had gotten no better. In fact, she had gotten worse. She had heard about Jesus, and so she came up behind him through the crowd and touched his robe. For she thought to herself, if I can just touch his robe, I will be healed. And immediately, the bleeding stopped, and she could feel in her body that she had been healed of her terrible condition.
And Jesus realized at once the healing power had gone out from him, And so he turned around in the crowd and he asked, who touched my robe? His disciples said to him, look at this crowd pressing around you. How can you ask who touched me? But he kept looking around to see who had done it. Then the frightened woman, trembling at the realization of what had happened to her, came and fell to her knees in front of him and told him what she had done.
And he said to her, daughter, your faith has made you well. Go in peace. Your suffering is over. And while he was still speaking to her, messengers arrived from the home of Jairus, the leader of the synagogue, and they told him, your daughter is dead. There's no use troubling the teacher now.
But Jesus overheard them, and he said to Jairus, don't be afraid. Just have faith or only believe. And then Jesus stopped the crowd and wouldn't let anyone go with him except Peter, James, and John, the brothers of James. Verse 38. When they came to the home of the synagogue leader, Jesus saw much commotion and weeping and wailing.
He went inside and asked, why all this commotion and weeping? The child isn't dead. She's only asleep. The crowd laughed at him, but he made them all leave. And he took the girl's father and mother and his three disciples into a room where the girl was lying.
Holding her hand, he said, Talitha kum, which means little girl, get up. And the girl, who was 12 years old, immediately stood up and she walked around. They were overwhelmed and totally amazed. Jesus gave them strict orders not to tell anyone what had happened, and then he told them to give her something to eat. So I'm gonna stop there for now.
But can we pray first before we go any further? And and I just... I wanna chat about these miracles some more. So, Lord, every story, every miracle, it reveals more of more of who you are. And what we're seeing in Mark is that you are God's beloved son.
You are king. You are messiah. You are lord. God, that we would see your loving kindness on every page through Mark, and that we would take these words to heart this evening to not be afraid, to only believe. God, that we would be divinely persuaded by you and have a faith that is humble and trusting, but also bold and persistent, and it takes action like we see Jairus and and the woman in this story.
In Jesus' name. Amen. So, again, couple of take... Just a couple of takeaways that stood out to me in these miracles there. That first, that Jesus answers the call of faith.
Blake, could you advance that next slide for me, please? And that faith is demonstrated in belief and in action. So starting with Jesus answers the call of of faith. So, again, I I know this is very, very obvious, but I wanna point it out anyway because I believe it's so important. When the woman and Jairus reach out in faith, Jesus responds.
He does not turn anyone away who comes to him in faith. Like, verse 34, there it is. Daughter, your faith has made you well. So your belief, your trust, your confidence directed toward Jesus rightly has made you well. Go in peace.
Your suffering is over. Isn't that good news? Or in verse 36, don't be afraid. Just have faith. Again, belief, trust, confidence directed rightly toward Jesus, and Jesus answers to that.
Just like he did in chapter one. Do you do you remember this? Blake, real quick. Is the... Like a Spotify or something like that?
Or am I just... I might be just hearing things. I'm sorry if I am. Just like he did in chapter one with a leper, he said, Jesus, if you're willing, you can heal me, and you can make me clean. And Jesus answers that call of faith by saying, I'm willing.
Be healed. So I just... I say that to encourage us, church, not to hesitate to reach out in faith because Jesus turns his face toward those who reach out in faith. Psalm 34 is one of my favorite psalms for that reason. It says, I sought the Lord and he answered me.
We sing this in church sometimes. Psalm 34, I sought the Lord and he answered me and delivered me from all my fears
and those who look on him.
So good. How about I just say it rather than sing it? I sought the Lord. He answered me. He delivered me from my fears.
Those who look on him are radiant. Their faces are never covered with shame. This poor man called, and the Lord heard him, and he saved him out of all his troubles. All to say, Jesus answers the call of faith, church. Jesus answers the call of faith.
But also note also note, faith is demonstrated in belief and action. So Jairus, for example, in verse twenty two and twenty three says, Jesus, would you please come lay your hands on her so that she can live? So there's the belief right there. I believe Jesus, if you lay your hands on her, that she will be healed, that she will live. There's his belief.
But his belief also takes action. He went to Jesus. He physically went to Jesus. He fell at his feet, and he pleaded fervently with him. He put that belief into action.
Same with the woman in verses twenty seven and and twenty eight, thinking to herself, if I can just touch his robe, I'm gonna be healed. If I can just just touch his robe, just just a little bit of his garment, I'm gonna be healed. That's belief. But then she also acts on it. She doesn't just say there and go, maybe that...
I I believe that could happen, maybe. She's going, no. I'm gonna I'm gonna put this into action. I'm going to actually... To do this.
She she came up behind him through the crowd, and that was risky, a very risky move, by the way, on her part because she was considered unclean and she was excluded from social settings like this. But she did it anyway, and I'm glad she did. She touched his robe. And it's a beautiful picture, I think, of putting belief into action. And I say this to encourage us as well.
More than believing, more than believing, putting that belief into action. In our case, how can we do that? How about how about going to Jesus in prayer? Asking, pleading, gathering in his name. I think of this verse in James because this is one we've, we put into practice here as a...
As an elder board here at First Be. And in James, it says, are any of you sick? You should call for the elders of the church to come and pray over you, anointing you with oil in the name of the Lord. Such a prayer offered in faith will heal the sick, and the Lord will make you well. And if you have committed any sins, you will be forgiven.
Now that is a big, bold statement. But after reading Mark five, like, I'm in. I'm in. I will gladly do this. If any of you were to say, listen, elder...
Elders, would would you guys come and and pray for us? I will gladly do this. Because what I see here is that Jesus wants for us wants for us to put our faith into action. He... And he gladly answers that call of faith.
I wanna... I just wanna end with this here before we get into our conversation time. It's a quote from a from a commentary I read this week, but it really inspired me. It really stuck with me. And so can I invite you to just to listen?
If you wanna close your eyes, great. Look at the floor. Look at the ceiling. Look at me. I don't I don't...
It doesn't matter. I just... I want you to hear it. It says this. It says, faith is embodied in action.
Faith is something that can be seen, Like the men digging through a roof to bring their friend to Jesus. You remember that story? How inspiring is that? Faith can be seen. It kneels.
It begs. It reaches out. That's what faith does. Belief about Jesus does not bring healing, but faith in Jesus that takes action does. May I just repeat that one more time?
Belief about Jesus does not bring healing. Oh, we saw that. We've been seeing that through scripture. The Pharisees, the religious teachers of the law, they're... They...
They've seen it. They know that Jesus exists. They know about him. But it's faith in him that takes action. That's where the healing occurs.
Neither the man nor the woman identify Jesus as the Messiah or even as a prophet. They are unclear precisely who he is, but they believe that he has the power to heal. And they're willing to put their faith to the test. Catch this. A rabbinic tradition interprets Exodus 14 to mean that only after the Israelites had gone into the sea up to their nostrils did the waters divide and expose dry ground.
That's a very interesting interpretation. Again, it's a tradition. I don't know if it's true or not, but I am inspired by it. I've been thinking about it all week. This interpretation accurately captures what faith is all about.
It does not wait to see if the waters will divide and then step out. It steps out trusting God to do what's needing. I like that. And may that be us, stepping out, taking action while believing and trusting God to do what is needed even before the waters divide. Even before the waters divide going, I'm stepping out here, God, even if it's up to my nostrils in the water, knowing, believing, trusting that you will do what's needed here.
And so I'll I'll end there. But I'd like to know what what spoke to you in these in these miracles of of the woman and with Jairus and his daughter. But may... Before we we we talk, may I pray just one more time? Lord, that that would be us stepping out, taking action while believing while believing and trusting that you will do what is needed even before even before the waters divide.
God, thank you for the gift of faith that you give to us. Your divine persuasion in us, Lord, that we would have a faith that is just like demonstrated in this story that it's bold, it's persuasive, it's it's humble. It comes to you trusting. In Jesus' name, amen. Alright.
Well, would anybody have any comments? I... To me, these two miracles, I thought, are just... They're two of my favorites. They're two of my favorites in scripture, and they're happening simultaneously at the same time.
I thought that was just, whoops, absolutely amazing is that these things are happening. They're both together, and Jesus can do it because Jesus is Jesus. But would anybody have a comment from Mark? And we'll skip the microphone because it seems like it's gonna blow up any second. It might.
Regardless of the circumstance at times too. Because I think by the way, I love what you're saying here. And I think James ties beautifully into it because that is the big theme in James. It is faith without works is a dead faith. So faith and action working together.
I love it. Have you got a comment there, Kyle? It is. Two amazing miracles here. Any others?
Any other comments? Monique, have you got one?
Can I do this just so some people online can hear it? I
think what stands out to me in these patch well, a couple of things, but it's just the timing of stuff. So the woman she dealt with the issue of blood for twelve years and then she's in that moment and then we don't know internally how Jairus reacted, Like hey, my daughter's really sick and then getting the news like she just died Jesus is in the middle of this miracle just like the humanness of that, you know, being like, okay, well, if you didn't interrupt, you know, maybe, I don't know, just the humanness, I think, of timing and how Jesus is outside of time even though he works in the constraints of time and then even made me think of the other miracle about the commander, the officer commander who also had a sick child he said, hey, just give the word. You know, and how Jesus doesn't compare us, I guess, you know, like he gives each of us a measure of faith and like that's what we're accountable for, not like our brother or sister like, hey, I didn't I didn't have faith like the commander. I wanted you to come to my house and lay hands on my daughter, you know, with Jairus but he doesn't compare.
He's able to, I think, meet each of us where we're at and we're accountable for like our own faith and just to know that like he's outside of time. So, like you said, like, he can do two miracles at once. He can do a lot more than that but yeah, it's a good reminder for me just that Jesus works outside of all kinds of boundaries, time, and comparison and just all kinds of things like that.
Yeah. Good point. Good point. I
I just like about these verses too that we're allowed to come to Jesus when we are ugly and not perfect and and raw. I I think that's really helpful for me because sometimes, you know, you're struggling with something over and over again, but he wants you to keep giving it up. Just this thing this thing again? Yeah. Here, take this this and just keep keep working on those things.
I... That's why I I like the reaffirming of of these verses tonight comes well for me just to remind me that like Jesus expects us to come to him whether we look clean or not, whether we are clean or not, like just just come. Just believe. So... Yep.
Amen.
Any others? Any other comments from this? Thanks for sharing your thoughts on this. I always appreciate hearing from you. The desperation of faith too really stood out to me that there were...
Where else were they gonna go? You know? But they believe that Jesus could truly do what Jesus does, and so they they came to him. And, Lord, I would make that our prayer as well. Lord, we would have a desperate faith as well that we would be heavily leaning depending not on our our own wisdom and ourselves, but on you and and come to you just as we are, as as Nick just mentioned as well, that we would come just as we are.
And, Lord, what I see in scripture is you don't turn anyone away. You're you're you're not... When someone comes to you in faith, you don't turn them away. And so we thank you for that, Lord, that you accept us, and you meet us where we where we are at as well. Thank you.
In Jesus' name, amen. Should we sing one more song? Evidence. Here's Jesus again in Luke 12. He says, don't be afraid, little flock, for it gives your father great happiness to give you the kingdom.
All throughout my history, Your faithfulness is warm beside me. The windstorms made way for spring. And every season from where I'm standing in, I see the abundance of your goodness all over my life, all over my life. I see your promises and fulfillments all over my life, all over my life. It'll me remember when I'm weak.
You fear me come or feel you leave. You lead my heart to victory. You are my strength and you will be. I see the evidence of your goodness all over my life, all over my life. I see your promises in fulfillment all over my life, all over my life.
See the cross, the empty grave.
See the cross, the empty grave. Yeah. That ends his endness. All my sin rolled away because of you, oh, Jesus. See the cross, the empty grave.
Yeah. But in this is endless, all my sin rolled away because of you, oh, Jesus. I see the evidence of your goodness all over my life, all over my life. And I see your promises in the fulfillment all over my life, all over my life. So why should I fear?
So why should I fear? Oh, the incense here. So why should I fear of all the incense here?
Can I leave this with us to you before we part? A little benediction from Psalm 37. It says to commit everything that we do to the Lord, to trust him, and he will help us. Thank you, God, for your divine help, for your divine persuasion in us, God, that gives birth to faith and more faith and more faith as we put it into practice. Lord, that that would be us, that we would be like the the Israelites in the in the story, in
the
tradition that they waited up to their nostrils, before the the the waters even parted because of their belief, knowing that you would do what only you can do. In Jesus' name. Amen.
