12 for the perfecting of the saints, to the work of serving, to the building up of the body of Christ;
13 until we all attain to the unity of the faith, and of the knowledge of the Son of God, to a full grown man, to the measure of the stature of the fullness of Christ;

Matthew 9
referenced as Jesus eating with the riffraff at Matthew's house and rebuking the Pharisees about mercy over religion
1 He entered into a boat, and crossed over, and came into his own city.
2 Behold, they brought to him a man who was paralyzed, lying on a bed. Jesus, seeing their faith, said to the paralytic, “Son, cheer up! Your sins are forgiven you.”
3 Behold, some of the scribes said to themselves, “This man blasphemes.”
4 Jesus, knowing their thoughts, said, “Why do you think evil in your hearts?
5 For which is easier, to say, ‘Your sins are forgiven;’ or to say, ‘Get up, and walk?’
6 But that you may know that the Son of Man has authority on earth to forgive sins-” (then he said to the paralytic), “Get up, and take up your mat, and go to your house.”
7 He arose and departed to his house.
8 But when the multitudes saw it, they marveled and glorified God, who had given such authority to men.
9 As Jesus passed by from there, he saw a man called Matthew sitting at the tax collection office. He said to him, “Follow me.” He got up and followed him.
10 As he sat in the house, behold, many tax collectors and sinners came and sat down with Jesus and his disciples.
11 When the Pharisees saw it, they said to his disciples, “Why does your teacher eat with tax collectors and sinners?”
12 When Jesus heard it, he said to them, “Those who are healthy have no need for a physician, but those who are sick do.
13 But you go and learn what this means: ‘I desire mercy, and not sacrifice,’ for I came not to call the righteous, but sinners to repentance.”
14 Then John’s disciples came to him, saying, “Why do we and the Pharisees fast often, but your disciples don’t fast?”
15 Jesus said to them, “Can the friends of the bridegroom mourn, as long as the bridegroom is with them? But the days will come when the bridegroom will be taken away from them, and then they will fast.
16 No one puts a piece of unshrunk cloth on an old garment; for the patch would tear away from the garment, and a worse hole is made.
17 Neither do people put new wine into old wine skins, or else the skins would burst, and the wine be spilled, and the skins ruined. No, they put new wine into fresh wine skins, and both are preserved.”
18 While he told these things to them, behold, a ruler came and worshiped him, saying, “My daughter has just died, but come and lay your hand on her, and she will live.”
19 Jesus got up and followed him, as did his disciples.
20 Behold, a woman who had an issue of blood for twelve years came behind him, and touched the fringe of his garment;
21 for she said within herself, “If I just touch his garment, I will be made well.”
22 But Jesus, turning around and seeing her, said, “Daughter, cheer up! Your faith has made you well.” And the woman was made well from that hour.
23 When Jesus came into the ruler’s house, and saw the flute players, and the crowd in noisy disorder,
24 he said to them, “Make room, because the girl isn’t dead, but sleeping.” They were ridiculing him.
25 But when the crowd was put out, he entered in, took her by the hand, and the girl arose.
26 The report of this went out into all that land.
27 As Jesus passed by from there, two blind men followed him, calling out and saying, “Have mercy on us, son of David!”
28 When he had come into the house, the blind men came to him. Jesus said to them, “Do you believe that I am able to do this?” They told him, “Yes, Lord.”
29 Then he touched their eyes, saying, “According to your faith be it done to you.”
30 Their eyes were opened. Jesus strictly commanded them, saying, “See that no one knows about this.”
31 But they went out and spread abroad his fame in all that land.
32 As they went out, behold, a mute man who was demon possessed was brought to him.
33 When the demon was cast out, the mute man spoke. The multitudes marveled, saying, “Nothing like this has ever been seen in Israel!”
34 But the Pharisees said, “By the prince of the demons, he casts out demons.”
35 Jesus went about all the cities and the villages, teaching in their synagogues, and preaching the Good News of the Kingdom, and healing every disease and every sickness among the people.
36 But when he saw the multitudes, he was moved with compassion for them, because they were harassed and scattered, like sheep without a shepherd.
37 Then he said to his disciples, “The harvest indeed is plentiful, but the laborers are few.
38 Pray therefore that the Lord of the harvest will send out laborers into his harvest.”

Isaiah 49
cited to say God never forgets us because we are engraved on the palms of His hands
1 Listen, islands, to me. Listen, you peoples, from afar: Yahweh has called me from the womb; from the inside of my mother he has mentioned my name.
2 He has made my mouth like a sharp sword. He has hidden me in the shadow of his hand. He has made me a polished shaft. He has kept me close in his quiver.
3 He said to me, “You are my servant; Israel, in whom I will be glorified.”
4 But I said, “I have labored in vain. I have spent my strength in vain for nothing; yet surely the justice due to me is with Yahweh, and my reward with my God.”
5 Now Yahweh says, he who formed me from the womb to be his servant, to bring Jacob again to him, and to gather Israel to him, for I am honorable in Yahweh’s eyes, and my God has become my strength.
6 Indeed, he says, “It is too light a thing that you should be my servant to raise up the tribes of Jacob, and to restore the preserved of Israel? I will also give you as a light to the nations, that you may be my salvation to the end of the earth.”
7 Yahweh, the Redeemer of Israel, and his Holy One, says to him whom man despises, to him whom the nation abhors, to a servant of rulers: “Kings shall see and rise up; princes, and they shall worship; because of Yahweh who is faithful, even the Holy One of Israel, who has chosen you.”
8 Yahweh says, “In an acceptable time I have answered you, and in a day of salvation I have helped you. I will preserve you, and give you for a covenant of the people, to raise up the land, to make them inherit the desolate heritage,
9 saying to those who are bound, ‘Come out!’; to those who are in darkness, ‘Show yourselves!’ “They shall feed along the paths, and their pasture shall be on all treeless heights.
10 They shall not hunger nor thirst; neither shall the heat nor sun strike them: for he who has mercy on them will lead them. He will guide them by springs of water.
11 I will make all my mountains a road, and my highways shall be exalted.
12 Behold, these shall come from afar; and behold, these from the north and from the west; and these from the land of Sinim.”
13 Sing, heavens; and be joyful, earth; and break out into singing, mountains: for Yahweh has comforted his people, and will have compassion on his afflicted.
14 But Zion said, “Yahweh has forsaken me, and the Lord has forgotten me.”
15 “Can a woman forget her nursing child, that she should not have compassion on the son of her womb? Yes, these may forget, yet I will not forget you!
16 Behold, I have engraved you on the palms of my hands. your walls are continually before me.
17 Your children hurry. Your destroyers and those who devastated you will leave you.
18 Lift up your eyes all around, and see: all these gather themselves together, and come to you. As I live,” says Yahweh, “you shall surely clothe yourself with them all as with an ornament, and dress yourself with them, like a bride.
19 “For, as for your waste and your desolate places, and your land that has been destroyed, surely now that land will be too small for the inhabitants, and those who swallowed you up will be far away.
20 The children of your bereavement will say in your ears, ‘This place is too small for me. Give me a place to live in.’
21 Then you will say in your heart, ‘Who has conceived these for me, since I have been bereaved of my children, and am solitary, an exile, and wandering back and forth? Who has brought these up? Behold, I was left alone. Where were these?’”
22 Thus says the Lord Yahweh, “Behold, I will lift up my hand to the nations, and lift up my banner to the peoples; and they shall bring your sons in their bosom, and your daughters shall be carried on their shoulders.
23 Kings shall be your foster fathers, and their queens your nursing mothers. They will bow down to you with their faces to the earth, and lick the dust of your feet; Then you will know that I am Yahweh; and those who wait for me shall not be disappointed.”
24 Shall the plunder be taken from the mighty, or the lawful captives be delivered?
25 But Yahweh says, “Even the captives of the mighty shall be taken away, and the plunder retrieved from the fierce; for I will contend with him who contends with you, and I will save your children.
26 I will feed those who oppress you with their own flesh; and they will be drunk on their own blood, as with sweet wine. Then all flesh shall know that I, Yahweh, am your Savior, and your Redeemer, the Mighty One of Jacob.”

Recap
The message in order, in a few minutes of reading.
This message was delivered at a women's community Bible study event hosted at First Baptist Jackson. The speaker was Deborah Buckingham, introduced by Carolyn Warzyniak. Deborah taught on the meaning of mercy, tracing it from its definition through its roots in how God values every person.
What was said
Deborah opened by explaining why she had spent nearly a year researching mercy, describing how the theme kept appearing in unexpected places, from a trip to Thailand with Children's Hunger Fund, to a sermon series Rick Warren announced at Saddleback, to Catholic friends reaching out about the year of mercy. She said she took all of it as a clear signal from God to go deeper on the subject.
She started by separating grace from mercy. Grace, she said, is God giving us what we do not deserve, a gift we cannot earn. Mercy is different: it is an action word with two parts. First, you see that someone has a need and you do something about it. Second, you choose to forgive. She pushed back against the idea that mercy is simply being a good person, saying there is a deeper root to it.
That root came to her while watching Ben Hur. Watching Jesus in those scenes, she said she noticed He kept gravitating toward people everyone else had written off. The message He was sending them, she argued, was: you are worth it, you have value. That is the core of mercy. When we give our time or money or forgiveness to someone, we are telling them they matter. When we withhold forgiveness and push someone away, we are telling them the opposite.
She then moved to the question of how mercy grows in a person, and her answer was that it starts with knowing God. She drew on the scene in Matthew 9 where Jesus is eating with people the Pharisees considered unfit, and Jesus tells the Pharisees to go figure out what it means that God desires mercy and not religion. Knowing God personally, she said, is what produces mercy in us, not accumulating doctrine or performing rituals.
Knowing God also settles the question of identity, which she treated as the necessary foundation for everything else. She said Christians who wound people are usually people who do not know who they are. Her own answer to the question was simple: she is a daughter of the King, and that identity comes before any role she holds as a wife or mother. She worked through several passages to show that God chose us, thinks about us constantly, and engraved us on the palms of His hands.
She closed by connecting personal identity to the life of the community. Using the image of a bolt that worked loose from a plane's elevator mechanism and caused a fatal crash, she argued that each person is a critical component of the body. No one is here to take up space. God planned good works for each person before they were born, and those good works are always expressed through serving others, because, as she quoted Rick Warren, it is impossible to serve God directly. The visible form that service takes, she said, is mercy.
Doing a Bible study?
Here is a guide we have prepared for you: the passages in order, questions for the group, and room to write.
- Deborah described mercy as having two parts: meeting someone's need with action, and choosing to forgive. Which of those two is harder for you personally, and why?
- Deborah said the root of mercy is telling someone 'you are worth it, you are valued,' and that withholding forgiveness sends the opposite message. Can you think of a time when someone showing you mercy, or you showing it to another person, changed a relationship?
