Speaker 3Another beautiful morning in Jackson. Great time to praise. And that's why we're here. We're here to praise God, give glory to him. Let me just, start with a verse.
0:09
It's from, Revelation four. It's you are worthy, oh Lord, our God, to receive glory and honor and power for you created all things, and they exist because you created what you pleased. So should we give praise to our creator and our sustainer? Let's stand up and do so.
0:33
Speaker 2Alright. Before the world. Before the world was made, before you spoke it to me, you were the king of kings. Yeah. You were.
0:45
Yeah. You were. And now, you're reigning still enthroned above all things. Angels and saints cry out, and we join them as we sing glory to God. Glory to God.
1:01
Let's sing it out. Glory to God forever. And we sing glory to God. Glory to God. Glory to God forever.
1:24
Alright. He gave us breath. Let's praise him. Creator and God, you gave me breath so I could praise your great and matchless name on my days, on my days. So let my whole life be a blazing offering, a life that chops and sings the greatness of our king.
1:49
Glory to God. Glory to God. Glory to God forever. And we sing glory to God. Glory to God.
2:04
Glory to God forever. Forever.
2:20
Speaker 3Amen. Let's pray. God, we are grateful for this day. This is a day that you have made, and we'll rejoice. We're gonna be glad in it, glad in you.
2:29
We're here for you, and I pray that we would make much of you today in everything that we do and and just slowly take this take this focus off ourself and put it on you, and in the process, be filled up because that's what you do. You give joy. You give life. We're grateful. Amen.
2:48
You all can have a seat.
2:51
Speaker 1Good morning, everybody. How are y'all? Good. I've got a few announcements up here. Sometimes, I make em up and sometimes, I don't know who makes em up.
3:00
This is it. No, actually, today is we're going to have a Spanish service. At 01:30 today, we're going be studying together the gospel of John. We're up to John six and Christian Rosas will be preaching today and so if you want to if you speak Spanish or you want to learn, come on and join us. It's actually a lot of fun.
3:24
The music is great. Florine does the music. So, that's at one hundred thirty today. This week is the big Turning Point Gala, the annual fundraising gala is the sixteenth. That's this Thursday at 06:00 in the evening at Spring Creek Ranch.
3:40
I think there may be a few places available but just a few. If you want to be a part of that and support that, please let us know and we will get you in touch with the right folks. Before that, there is, sorry, it's the fourteenth, not the fifteenth. I don't want to confuse you. It's in fact, it's in the bulletin.
3:57
There is in English and in Spanish because it's going to be translated. You can see this in your bulletins. That's on the fourteenth and it is here, here, not at the Presbyterian Church. So, last week, when I announced that things have changed since then, it's going to be here on the fourteenth, not the fifteenth, fourteenth. Monday nights are happening on Monday night.
4:16
That one's easy. Monday nights always happen. Meal music and a message. Carl is back. Where you heading tomorrow?
4:21
John 40. First John 4. Sounds good. Walking in the light. Testing the spirits.
4:26
Yeah. Okay, very good. And the rest of it, you can check your bulletin for that. How are you doing today? Y'all looking kind of glum quite honestly.
4:34
This is scary. I don't wanna preach to this. Y'all have to cheer up. Would you stand up and greet one another? And then we'll bring you back together with a song.
4:41
God
4:43
Speaker 2standing standing on the promises of Christ my king, who eternally just let his praises ring. Glory in the highest, I will shout and sing. Standing on the promises of God. Standing standing on the promises of God my savior. Standing standing.
5:16
I'm standing on the promises of God. This is good news right here. Let's sing of it. I'm standing on the promises that cannot fade when the howling storms of doubt and fear are saved. By the living word of God, I shall prevail.
5:36
I'm standing on the promises of God. Standing standing standing on the of God, my savior. Standing standing on the promises of God. Standing on the promises I now can see. Perfect present cleansing in the blood for me.
6:10
Standing in the liberty where Christ makes free. Standing on the promises promises of of God. God. Where Standing Standing on standing on the promises of God, my savior. Standing standing.
6:32
I'm standing on the promises of God. Standing on the promises I cannot fall. Listening every moment to the spirit's call, resting in my savior as my all and all, standing on the promises of God. One more time. Standing on my savior.
7:06
Sending standing on the promises of God. Seated above seated above and thrown in the father's love destined to die poured out for God's own son worthy of worthy of all thy praise Jesus awesome and powerful awesome and great is your
11:52
Speaker 3Amen. From Galatians, you we're going to hear it today. Paul says, as for me, may I never boast about anything except the cross of our of our Lord Jesus Christ. We, if we're going to boast, believers, it's not in us. It really isn't.
12:13
It's not in us and it's not in our work. Sure, do good things. Be filled with the spirit. Do good things and do it all for Christ as hard as you can. But honestly, that's not what our salvation depends on.
12:26
It is so dependent on the work of Jesus and what he has done. The work's been done. What's required from us is faith and true repentance to recognize who we are. We've fallen short. We're sinners but that God is good, righteous, and holy and that through faith in him, that's where salvation's at.
12:45
Yeah. Amen? Amen.
12:56
Speaker 1Amen.
15:17
Speaker 2Let me hide myself in thee. Let me hide myself in thee.
15:36
Speaker 3So true. Yeah. I guess the image that comes to to my mind, lord, is is Jesus, you standing in front of us and pleading our case before God. And just recognizing you, God, as holy and righteous and wonderful and and just being in awe of you and then having Christ standing in our place and and and pleading for us on our behalf saying, this one's mine. We thank you for that.
16:03
We thank you for thank you for saving us for from ourselves. Thank you God for every good gift. We recognize that everything we have, it comes from you. And as we participate here in this worship of giving, just one more way to give to you. I pray that we would give with an open hand and a big heart and a lot of joy because that's what you've given.
16:33
We pray this in Christ's name. Amen. Now, can I be seated?
19:34
Speaker 1Thank you, Florine. You all know the musical direction Selah? It's in the Psalms. You see it all the time. It means let it ring.
19:42
I told Florine last week. I said, I could not help you at all with music, not one bit. But when you finish, just let it ring, man. Just let it ring. Hold that pedal down for a second longer.
19:52
So that's what he just said. He said, I let it ring. He does let it ring. Praise God. Galatians six, we're up to the last little bit of Galatians and we have been here since 03/29/2015.
20:09
Been here a while and I am a bit nostalgic today. When I get to the end of one, I mean, the end of James is where I read sang Simple Man by Leonard Skinner. Things happen. At the end of a book, it's weird. It was like, at this week, I got really, really nostalgic about this whole book and in my mind, I could see the montage of the slideshows.
20:30
It was ridiculous but there's so much to be learned. So much to be learned in Galatians and in the concluding matters, he covers basically the whole book again. So, stewardship is the first thing we'll talk about today. You can you can count em down. There are four issues today.
20:48
Stewardship is first. The next one is substantiation or authentication of the message. Summary, he summarizes the whole book of Galatians in one paragraph and then he signs off and that's it. We'll go on to second Corinthians from here. That's the next thing we'll be studying together but Galatians six nine through 18 is a very very rich passage and it covers a lot of what has been covered in this book.
21:13
Before I get into that though, y'all know who this guy is, Thomas Hobbs? Thomas Hobbs, English moral and political philosopher and I have been thinking a lot about him this week probably because of the whole church and state issue from last week, I think and so I read a bunch of his work this week and it was just kind of filling filling me up with a lot of different ideas and I was thinking that Hobbs' problem was his time period. Hobbs' dilemma is a different thing but his time period, the church and the state were the same and he basically political philosopher that he was said that you seed to the state and in his case, the church, your autonomy, you're seeding some of your liberty to them to keep order But the problem or the dilemma is that anybody that's strong enough to keep the peace is also strong enough to make war. And so it's an interesting thing. Thomas Hobbs, I don't know why I bring him up, but he he's been kind of I've been thinking a lot about this this week because he says there can only be one sovereign.
22:20
There can only be one king and I like that idea. God is the king. He is it. When people used to call me Ray in Mexico, my name my name is Ray But when I introduced myself or somebody else would introduce me in Mexico, they'd say, ah, you're Ray. And I'd say, no.
22:35
No soy, Ray. I am not the king. Ramon. I Ramon. I know the king, and I can introduce you, but I'm not him.
22:43
There is only one king and God is the king. Christ is king. So, Hobbs had the problem of the king being both church and state. He had a problem with that. We don't have that.
22:55
Our our sovereign is God. No doubt about it. Our sovereign is God. Now, we do seed because they can keep the peace to the government and that's fine but he had didn't have the benefit of having the separation of church and state. I mentioned that at the beginning only because it's been going through my head so much.
23:12
It's worth considering. Some of these old philosophers are worth considering. So, anyway, this is verse nine with the first line missing for some reason. Of and this by the way, this is Galatians. This is the summary.
23:30
These are the slides from the book of Galatians. There's a lot in Galatians. These last few sermons. Galatians six nine though with the first line reads, and let us not grow weary of doing good. For in due season, we will reap if we do not give up.
23:50
Let's just read the whole thing. So then, as we have opportunity, let us do good to everyone. Now, this is exactly opposite from Hobbes' philosophy. He said that in natural law without any government over us, we would kill each other. It would be rampant hysteria all the time.
24:05
It'd be like the walking dead. It would be something where there was no rule and we would go after each other all the time but Paul is saying, as we have opportunity, let us do good to everyone and especially to those who are of the household of faith. See with what large letters I'm writing to you with my own hand, it's those who want to make a good showing in the flesh who would force you to be circumcised. We're going talk about it again and only in order that they may not be persecuted for the cross of Christ. For even those who are circumcised do not themselves keep the law.
24:38
But they desire to have you circumcised that they may boast in your flesh. But far be it from me to boast except in the cross of our Lord Jesus Christ. By which the world has been crucified to me and I to the world for neither circumcision counts for anything nor uncircumcision but a new creation and as for all who walk by this rule, as for all who walk by this rule, peace and mercy be upon them and upon the Israel of God. From now on, let no one cause me trouble for I bear on my body the marks of Jesus. The grace of our Lord Jesus Christ be with your spirit, brothers.
25:16
Amen. God, as we come to a close, would y'all pray with me? God, as we come to a close of Galatians, I I pray lord that we would we would squeeze it and get every drop out of it. Lord, that we would learn the lessons that would keep us from legalism and overblown formality in the eyes of men. And God that you would keep us out of that ditch of license that we would walk in your spirit lord and not have to deal with the problems that come from excess.
25:50
So, lord, would you apply this to our lives and our hearts? In Jesus name, I ask you to illumine this passage today. Amen. So, the first part is about stewardship and I I hesitated to even put it up there because this is kind of a sneaky stewardship passage to me. In fact, I I covered part of it last week.
26:09
I really wanted to get to last week. God is not mocked. I wanted to get to verse seven. God is not mocked because of the whole week before. So, let's go for this.
26:23
Here it is again. Actually, and let us not grow weary of doing good for in due season we will reap. If we do not give up. If we do not give up up there is something that hangs in people's crawls sometimes. They think, how can he say that?
26:47
It's the faithfulness of God that keeps us and I agree totally with that. He's saying, God is faithful. So, stick with him. Stick with him. Don't give up.
26:56
Don't grow weary in doing good. At the Turning Point Pregnancy Resource Center board meeting this week, I listened to just some of the cases that have happened over the last month. People have come in in very very desperate situations And the ladies who are working there, Alyssa, one of our gals, and Judy, another one of our ladies that is working there, meet these ladies and gentlemen with compassion. And they do this every day, day in, day out, and it can be a heavy load sharing someone's burden. And this is a great message for that.
27:29
Do not grow weary of doing good, for in due season we will reap If we do not give up. So, it's just an encouragement to keep on going. John Calvin and the and the reformers and a lot of the reformed guys would say, this is about the perseverance of the saints and I totally agree with that. He's saying that if you are a believer, you will persist. Where do we pull the slides from this Sunday?
28:07
I saved them as pictures just like we're supposed to. Therefore thank you. Sorry. Excuse me. Therefore or so then, as we have opportunity, let us do good to everyone and especially to those who are of the household of faith.
28:40
So then, as we have opportunity, I highlighted the as we have opportunity because this is a stewardship passage. It's as we have opportunity when we run into somebody who needs help, that's an opportunity. More than that though is when we have the ability to help, that's an opportunity. We can avail ourselves if we are able. So, it's saying to the extent that you have been blessed as we have opportunity.
29:05
Some of us are more able to bless in a financial way. Some of us are more able to bless in a compassionate way. Some of us are more able to bless in time. Some of us are more able to bless in understanding than others but as we have opportunity, whatever gifts God has given, those things, let us be doing that and not just limiting it just to me, my four, and no more, not just the folks in this room right now. Let us do good to everyone.
29:30
Even the folks who come up and you know they're lying. Now what does doing good to those folks look like? I don't know. Not every time. But helping them with some money sometimes helps.
29:42
Helping them see the error of begging unnecessarily. Sometimes helps. Looking down, Diane looking over her glasses and giving the money but saying, you'd really gotta have a plan. You really need to have a plan. You're not gonna be able to stay in this valley long term if you don't have a plan.
30:02
We can help you with that. Doing good to everyone. But it does say, and especially to those who are of the household of faith. So there is some difference there, some preference. Brothers and sisters in Christ who are suffering and you have the ability to help.
30:22
He's saying, especially, do that. Make sure that you do that. I tend to be an outward looking guy. I like to do good to everyone. I like that because I think that's very, very attractive.
30:33
I think it draws people in. But you know what else is attractive? Having a family that's not your family. The family of God that take care of one another and love one another. That's very attractive too.
30:45
So, some of y'all are some of y'all are more inclined to do one or the other. I say do it with your whole heart first. Be. Be real. Be whole.
30:54
Believe. That was during this time. It'll come up again. I'm nostalgic this morning. Sorry.
31:03
If you read Galatians six ten in its own paragraph, you'll start to see a little better, I think, because this is a unit. This paragraph is a unit, and it is about stewardship. Let the one who is taught the word share all good things with the one who teaches. And what's that about? That's about tithing, offering, taking care of the folks who teach.
31:24
Sunday school teachers, preachers, ministers, people who do this. I'm I'm a professional minister and that's a weird position to me but y'all are ministering professionals and y'all have opportunities that I don't have but I have an opportunity to stand in front of 200 and something y'all a week. I have opportunities you don't have. Let the one who's taught the word share all good things with the one who teaches. Do not be deceived.
31:51
God is not mocked. For whatever one sows, that will he also reap. For the one who sows to his own flesh will from the flesh reap corruption and the one who sows to the spirit will from the spirit reap eternal life. I I've had folks call. Actually, I had a couple people call when I first got here, and they said, can we give to what about the whole tithe and offering thing?
32:11
Tell me what you think about this. Can we give to anybody? I said, yeah. Can we give to civic organizations? And I'm like, yep.
32:21
Can we do that instead of tithing? I'm like, you can. We're completely free for sure, but I think that especially might come into play there. I think it's good. I think that Christians ought to be involved in supporting completely secular organizations.
32:37
I don't think that all your money has to come here all the time. No. I don't think that. But this is something to consider. Why are you doing what you're doing?
32:45
Are you doing it for the approval of men or to avoid and our culture has changed somewhat. I heard a message from John Piper but it's from the early eighties where he said that what people do in general, all people and Hobbs would agree. They do whatever they can to avoid pokes, people poking at em and saying, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no. They have a fear of men but he said, they also do whatever they do to gain the strokes of men. Saying, oh, what you've done is wonderful and lifted up.
33:14
He, that's what Paul is calling, one who is sowing to his own flesh. If you're sowing so that you would be built up or not be persecuted, then consider that. That's a fleshly thing and it will reap corruption eventually but the one who sows to the spirit will from the spirit reap eternal life and let us not grow weary of doing good for in due season, we will reap if we do not give up. So then, as we have opportunity, let us do good to everyone and especially to those who are of the household of faith. That's about what we do with what God has given.
33:44
Not just money, time, understanding, mental, capacity, compassion, mercy, love. If God's given you an inordinate joy and you can bring it to other people, do that. Amen. So, that's stewardship. Jesus says, where your treasure is, there will your heart be also.
34:05
Substantiation. Alright, does anybody know what that says? They were saving space back in the old days. They saved a lot of space by not putting any space between the words. They had space between the words if if they had the space, sometimes they'd be in there but in the New Testament, all of our old manuscript copies, this is taken from this passage.
34:28
If I put the space between the words, it looks like that and it's huge right there and the reason is because the next line we get to is six eleven. Galatians six eleven, Paul says, see with what large letters I am writing to you in my own hand. He's saying, I really did write this, people. Don't trust the Judaizers that say that I'm not preaching the cross anymore. He's authenticating his message.
34:55
They're not a whole lot of sub points for this one. He's just making sure that people know this is not a forgery. Remember at the beginning, he said, my authority has been given directly by God and then he gives his whole backstory and he says, Christ, Christ, Christ, Christ centered message on the authority of God directly to me. I'm not trusting or making this up and then at the end, he authenticates or substantiates his message. Baptist preachers and alliteration.
35:26
Just gotta do it. See with what large letters I am writing to you with my own hand. He substantiates it and then he goes right on to the summary and this is a summary of basically the entire book of Galatians and y'all know I've been running across the stage, not exercising but running across the stage and over here, we've been talking about the legalists and over there, we've been talking about those who have fallen into the ditch of license and they're over here in sin coming out of a pagan background. They come up to right here and in their youth of their Christianity, they understand what it's all about. They get it.
35:59
Paul has no doubt about it and Paul says, this is where it's at but our tendency as human beings is not to stick right here. Our tendency is to fall off in one ditch or the other and what the Galatians had done was come out of paganism and fall into the ditch of legalism because they had the Judaizers that were promoting that lifestyle and Paul says it was their pride. These guys wanted for the Galatians to think much of them and so, we'll get into that in a minute. It's those who want to make a good showing in the flesh who would force you to be circumcised. The legalist, the ones, the Judaizers would make a good showing in the flesh.
36:41
They can say, hey, hey, Jerusalem. Everybody in the synagogue in Jerusalem, you know what we did? We got 15 guys to circumcise themselves. That's something you can count. You know what we did?
36:54
We've got a bunch of people showing up and we get together and we go over the mosaic. It's something you can count. They're wanting to make a good showing in the flesh for themselves. They would force you to be circumcised but only in order that they may not be persecuted for the cross of Christ. The cross of Christ and the old rugged cross, it pops every bit of human pride.
37:22
Knowledge puffs up. I heard a guy say once that the splinters of the old rugged cross pop the balloon of human pride. I agree. You cannot stand at the cross and say, it's all about me. Nope.
37:41
It's not about you. Christ died for you. But it's not about you and it's not about what you can do. It's about surrendering to that. And it sounds like foolishness to people to say, no, no, no, You can pull yourself up by your bootstraps.
37:57
It's ridiculous for you to think that. Why in the world Christians think they're special or different? We're special or different only because we've accepted the way that God has made. For even those who are circumcised don't themselves keep the law. There's no one righteous.
38:14
No, not one. But they desire to have you circumcised that they may boast in your flesh. They want to brag about what they got you to do. They actually would stand up to God and say, look, God, I got them to do this. It's like you want it, right?
38:30
Right? Paul says, but far be it from me to boast except in the cross of our Lord Jesus Christ. I'm not going to boast in anything except the cross of Christ by which and grammatically, it could be or whom but I think it's which. The cross of our Lord Jesus Christ by which the world has been crucified to me and I to the world. It's both ways.
38:56
The world has been crucified to me and I to the world. Calvin, John Calvin said, about Galatians six fourteen, he says, by it and he means the cross. By it, by the cross, strictly, we die to the world. That is the only way. It is not by our superiors religiosity.
39:19
It's not by our vain philosophies. It is by the cross. Buddy says, what exactly is the meaning of the world? It is unquestionably contrasted in six fourteen with the new creature. Whatever is opposed to the spiritual kingdom of Christ is the world because it belongs to the old man or in a word, the world is the object and the aim of the old man.
39:43
So, the object and aim of the old man is to avoid pokes and to gain strokes. It is to build self up. It is to have fame, have glory, and have it be yours, not God's. The world is the object and the aim of the old man. Do y'all agree with that?
40:03
Do y'all agree that in the world, people want money, pain, money, fame, power, glory, the most part. That's what they want for themselves. So, the world is the object and aim of the old man according to Calvin And Jesus says, what shall it profit a man if he shall gain the whole world and lose his own soul? There can only be one sovereign, right? Either God is sovereign or there's another sovereign.
40:31
And those of us who make ourselves the sovereign one are self exalters, and then there are Christ exalters. And the self exalters can either be religious fanatic, legalist, or they can be irreligious altogether but self exaltation in that way. So, there are self exalters or there are Christ exalters. Self exalters can fall into either camp. You can have all of the sin that you desire and lose your own soul.
41:04
You can follow all the rules that you think God wants. And still fall short if that's where you put your trust. What shall it profit a man if he shall gain the whole world and lose his own soul? So Calvin goes on. He says, the world is crucified to me.
41:22
This exactly agrees with the language he employs on another occasion, and then he goes into his version of Philippians, Philippians three, seven, and eight and this resonates. I think this is right. I'm looking forward to getting to Philippians. We're a few books away but but what things were gained to me, whatever I counted as great before and for Paul, it was way over here. Those things I count but loss for the cause of Christ or for Christ.
41:46
Yey, doubtless. I count all things, not just those things but these things too. All things but lost for the excellency of knowledge of Christ, Jesus, my lord. For whom I have suffered the loss of all things, both sides, and I do count them but scubula, dung, rubbish, trash, garbage, Montonda garbage, a lot of I do count them but dung that I may win Christ. He's put aside everything except for the old rugged cross where his sins were nailed to that tree.
42:25
Six fifteen says, for neither circumcision counts for anything over here nor uncircumcision or natural state but a new creation The new creation is something that in second Corinthians Paul, that's where we're going next. Second Corinthians where we're going next. In five seventeen, he says, if anyone is in Christ, he is a new creation. Right here is the new creation. Now, we can still slip in our practice and in our action.
42:54
We can slip to one side or another but the new creation is a very very important concept that God has done the work. Christ on the cross has done the work and if you put your trust in him, you are a new creation. The old has passed away. Behold, the new has come. In fact, I think that Paul knowing that that's the case is why he can write to the Galatians who are not acting like this.
43:17
They're not right here in the middle. They're not right here walking in the spirit every single day but he can write with utter confidence that because Christ has saved them, he can urge them back to that center way and away from the heresy over there and away from the hardship over there. Galatians six fifteen says, for neither circumcision counts for anything nor uncircumcision but a new creation and if you just feel like you just read that, in five six, it says, for in Christ, neither circumcision nor uncircumcision counts for anything. It's very similar wording but only faith working through love and when I look at that, I put those two things together. New creation, faith working through love.
44:02
They are equated because Paul is saying, this doesn't mean anything but this does. New creation, God's work. Faith working through love. That matters. That's what new creations do.
44:18
When I survey the wondrous cross on which the prince of glory died, my riches gain account but loss and pour contempt on all my pride. I let the splinters of that cross pop my balloon of pride and just say, lord, it's you. For salvation, it's you. For my sanctification, it's you. It's not me or my human resources.
44:39
I will not exalt self. I will only boast in you and your Christ. And your cross. And as for all who walk by this rule, right here, peace and mercy be upon them. Peace and mercy be upon you.
44:55
It is a peaceful place to be when you're not so preoccupied with either of these ditches. They're very, very peaceful place and I think when Jesus says, take my burden upon you for it is light. Can you imagine what it would be like not to have any regret at all? Jesus didn't have to carry around the regret. He had those no stones in his backpack for himself.
45:17
Take this upon you. It's light. This is a great place to be. Peace and mercy, Paul says, be upon them and upon the Israel of God. Now, the Israel of God is the chosen people of God but when Paul makes this contrast especially when he's speaking about the Judaizers, he's saying, it's not about lineage.
45:38
It's not about the nation of Israel. It's not about the actual bloodline. It's about belief upon the Israel of God. That's a distinction that Paul is making right there. Now, last week, this slide, I heard about a lot this week and I know there's some visitors that weren't here last week but for the folks who were, this slide made an impression, I think, where we just put up the vice lists, a few of them, up against the fruits of the spirit and there's a big difference in these two lists.
46:11
And as I was considering it and thinking about it this week, I I I thought of Hobbs all week long because of this because if you live over here and you don't have anything to restrain or hold that back, whoo, that's an ugly place to be. I agree with Hobbs. I think we'd tear each other apart. I also agree with Calvin and Hobbes. So Hobbes says, do you or no.
46:40
Calvin says to Hobbes, Hobbes, do you think our morality is defined by our actions or by what's in our hearts? And Hobbs says, I think with Paul, I think our actions show what's in our hearts. Y'all know Calvin, right? He's a mischievous little kid, six year old kid. He's always into everything all the time.
47:03
He goes, I resent that. I think a lot of us kinda felt that last week looking at those lists and going, we're Christians but I see myself in this dark list over here probably more than I see myself over here. Well, Christ is the one who's making us into this. It's the fruit of the spirit. Put down your taproot.
47:25
So to the spirit Your resources. Put em in that and God will grow you up in that. These things will have less and less and less and less appeal. They will be with us until the end. I believe until we are glorified until Christ comes back.
47:46
I believe we will have these with us but hopefully, these will be diminishing and these will be on increase as we live yielded lives before God. We have the spirit of God in our life to direct us. Are we going to feed the spirit? Are we going to feed the flesh? And now, the sign off.
48:03
Seventeen and eighteen. From now on, let no one cause me trouble. Can you hear this? Can you hear Paul talking to the people that he loves and knowing that there are some guys who've been causing trouble for his theology especially. He's been removed at a distance but he says, from now on, let no one cause me trouble.
48:21
Now, as he's saying, I don't want to face the persecution that I've faced. I don't think so. He's willing. He's still rolling and tumbling. Literally.
48:30
Being stoned, beaten, lashed. He's willing to keep on taking that. He's saying to them, hey, my Galatian buddies, I've been making sense for five whole chapters up to this point, six chapters now and we've got it, right? You understand that it's about this right here? You understand it's about being in Christ, in the spirit, in faith, not about law, not about.
48:52
So, from now on people, don't listen to that junk. Stand up for what you believe is right. Stand up for this. Stand up for the cross. Lift high the cross.
49:03
Right here. This is what it's about. I bear on my body the marks of Christ. He's not talking about circumcision there. He's talking about having been beaten just like Jesus was beaten.
49:15
He's talking about being persecuted just like Jesus was persecuted. I bear on my body the marks of Jesus and by extension, if you stand up for it, you're probably going to take some knocks too. And then he ends just like he began. The grace of our Lord Jesus Christ be with your spirit, brothers and sisters. Amen.
49:36
So, the takeaways from Galatians. Alright, here. I'm going to put em up just like they were. Stewardship, God gives gifts and fruit to be used for good. God knows how you're using what he has given.
49:49
He's not mocked. So as you have opportunity, whatever he's blessed you with, be doing good. Substantiation. Paul uses his God given revelation and his authority to correct error and halt heresy. Summary, no mere man is righteous before God.
50:15
Only by God's grace, the cross of Christ, not the law, may we be saved. Only by God's grace may we be saved and I would go further and say I'm sanctified. Only by God's grace, may we be saved and sanctified. Peace and mercy belong to those who trust him And then the sign off is stand for truth, Paul says, with me. Stand up for the truth of the sinner of the gospel with me no matter what the cost.
50:44
I bear the marks on my body. I know how it is. Jesus knew how it was. Stand up. No matter the cost.
50:51
And I love it that Paul always starts and ends with the blessing of grace spoken to the spirit of those who put their trust in Christ. That's an encouraging word. Now, we're coming to the table today of the Lord and yesterday, Carl and I and Kyle Knutson, maybe a couple more went over for an ordination at Saint John's Episcopal to see Trent Moore who's a good friend of ours be ordained as a priest and that's a little bit theologically on this. Man, what a beautiful service that was and I believe that Trent is my brother in Christ and I believe that he will lead people in a good and godly way and it was great to receive communion. It might seem a little unusual to me.
51:31
The the forms but if we start protecting our form and have it be exactly like this, we fall into danger of being legalist just doing it a different way. So, when I heard it yesterday, we're gonna do the Lord's prayer when we get to that point Today and the high churchiness of things yesterday was really really good for me. Really good for me. So, would could I get the elders to come forward? And I say that this is not gonna be high church.
52:00
I don't think I'm capable of high church. Thank you, Florine. God, as we gather together in your name to hear your word that it would make a difference on our lives. Lord, let us not bend it to our will but bend our wills to what the scriptures say. Would you keep us out of the ditches and walking in this peaceful place?
52:25
Brokenhearted about our sin, lord, but receiving your grace and as we now come to a time of communion, we remember you and your broken body and your shed blood, your broken body given for us, living that perfect life, and taking the beating that we deserve. Lord, as we distribute this bread, we ask that you bless everyone that partakes, lord, and for those who must let this plate pass because they don't know you, they don't put their trust in you, lord. Would you open up their minds to understand, their hearts to receive, and would you put somebody, one of us, if not more, in their lives, lord, that could explain what it means to commune with almighty God. Would you bless this bread in this time? Amen.
56:14
Holy and gracious father, in your infinite love, you made us for yourself and when we had fallen into sin and become subject to evil and death in the garden, you and your mercy, lord, sent Jesus, Your only and eternal son to share our human nature, to live and to die as one of us to reconcile us to you, God and father of all. Christ stretched out his arms upon the cross and offered himself in obedience to your will, a perfect sacrifice for the whole world. And on the night that he was handed over to suffering and death, our Lord Jesus Christ took bread and when he had given thanks to you, father, he broke it and he gave it to his disciples and he said, take and eat. This is my body which is given for you. Do this and remember it's me.
56:59
Jesus, we do remember your broken body, lord. And we think about all of the pains of life that you had up to that point. Suffering without deserving the suffering. Lord, we admit that we deserve the suffering but we rest in a place of peace and mercy because of your sacrifice. Your shed blood on the cross paid the penalty for our sin.
57:23
Would you bless this cup as we pass it, lord? And we remember your shed blood. Amen.
1:02:04
Speaker 3Miss the Lord's prayer. Let's say it together, shall we? It might sound jumbled, but let's do it. So
1:02:18
Speaker 1if you would, our father,
1:02:21
Speaker 2who art in
1:02:22
Speaker 1heaven, hallowed be your name. In the kingdom, thy will be done on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread, and forgive us our trespasses, as we forgive those who trespass against us, and lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil, for thine is the kingdom, and the power, and the glory forever. Amen.
1:02:56
Speaker 2Alright. We believe in God. We believe in God the father. We believe in Jesus Christ. We believe in the Holy Spirit, and he's given us new life.
1:03:12
We believe in the crucifixion. We believe that he conquered death. We believe in the resurrection. The Holy Spirit, and he's given us new life. We believe in the crucifixion.
1:03:46
We believe that he conquered death. Amen. We believe in the resurrection, and he's coming back
1:04:11
Speaker 1and the grace of the Lord Jesus Christ, love of God, and the fellowship of the Holy Spirit be with you all. Amen.
