Watch or read it

In one paragraph

Monday night the group worked through Mark 7:1-23, where Jesus confronts the Pharisees over their hand-washing traditions and cuts to the real issue: what comes out of a person's heart, not what goes in. The pastor traced that argument through the Old Testament background and into the congregation's own experience with church traditions. The trouble started when religious leaders came all the way...

Read together

  1. Mark 7:1-23 main passage read and taught through, on inner purity versus outward tradition
  2. Revelation 1 quoted to explain the worship song line about Christ coming on the clouds and everyone seeing him
  3. Romans quoted that every knee shall bow and every tongue confess to God
  4. Exodus instructions for priests at the bronze washbasin, washing hands and feet or they will die
  5. Jeremiah 17 quoted that the human heart is the most deceitful of all things and desperately wicked
  6. Ezekiel quoted the promise of a new heart and new spirit, removing the stony stubborn heart and giving a tender responsive heart
  7. Matthew Jesus calls the Pharisees whitewashed tombs, beautiful outside but filled with dead bones and impurity
  8. Romans quoted that the kingdom of God is not a matter of eating and drinking but of righteousness and peace and joy in the Holy Spirit

Talk about it

  1. The religious leaders came all the way from Jerusalem and, with everything Jesus had been doing, zeroed in on a handwashing tradition. Where do you find yourself doing something similar, focusing on a secondary thing while missing what God is actually doing?
  2. The pastor read from Exodus that the priests who failed to wash before approaching God would die, and then showed how the Pharisees extended that rule to everyone in everyday life. How do you think that kind of rule-creep happens, and what does it do to people's sense of whether God is approachable?
  3. Jesus listed what actually comes out of the heart: evil thoughts, sexual immorality, theft, murder, greed, deceit, pride, and more. Several people in the group said they saw themselves in that list. What does it do to you to sit with that list honestly, and how does it change the way you hear the good news?
  4. Ezekiel's promise is a new heart, tender and responsive, to replace the stony stubborn one. Gannon made a distinction between feeling convicted or tender and actually being responsive with your heart afterward. Where is the gap between those two things showing up in your own life right now?
  5. Laura pointed out that the Pharisees' traditions originally came from things God himself instated, meant to point people toward Him, but that hearts grow hard and the sign becomes the thing itself. What traditions in your own life or church background have genuinely drawn you closer to God, and which ones have quietly closed you off from Him?
