Watch or read it

In one paragraph

The pastor walked through Mark 10:1-16, where Jesus addresses the Pharisees' question about divorce and then welcomes children brought to Him for blessing. The two scenes are connected by the same thread: hardness of heart on one side, and childlike openness on the other. The message pressed the congregation to examine which posture they are actually living from. Mark notes almost in passing that...

Read together

  1. Mark 10:1-16 the main passage being taught, covering Jesus on marriage, divorce, and blessing the children
  2. Deuteronomy 24 cited as the source of Moses permitting a written notice of divorce
  3. Matthew 5 mentioned as a place where adultery is given as a legitimate reason for divorce
  4. 1 Corinthians 7 mentioned as a place where abandonment is given as a legitimate reason for divorce
  5. Ephesians 5:25 quoted to show God's ideal for marriage: husbands love your wives as Christ loved the church
  6. Ephesians 5:21 quoted by Ray as submitting to one another out of reverence for Christ

Talk about it

  1. Pastor talked about Jesus deliberately walking toward Jerusalem knowing what waited for him there. What does that kind of determined obedience look like in your own life, and where do you find it hardest to keep walking when you know the road ahead is costly?
  2. The preacher pointed out that the Pharisees were asking what Moses permitted rather than what God commanded, and he turned that inward by asking whether we look for loopholes in God's design rather than seeking His real intent. Where do you notice that tendency in yourself?
  3. Pastor suggested that if a broken couple had come to Jesus seeking help, the tone of His response might have looked more like His conversation with the woman at the well. How does paying attention to the audience and context of a passage change the way you read and apply it?
  4. The preacher described God's ideal for marriage using Ephesians, where husbands are called to love their wives the way Christ loved the church, and said he personally falls short of that standard. What does sacrificial, cross-shaped love look like in the everyday relationships you are actually in right now?
  5. Pastor listed humility, trust, and dependence as the childlike qualities Jesus says we need to receive the kingdom of God, and one person in the group added the idea of being all in. Which of those qualities feels most natural to you, and which one do you find hardest to hold on to as an adult?
