Romans 8:38-39 nothing shall separate us from the love of God, not death nor life nor angels nor demons
38 For I am persuaded that neither death, nor life, nor angels, nor principalities, nor things present, nor things to come, nor powers,
39 nor height, nor depth, nor any other created thing, will be able to separate us from God’s love, which is in Christ Jesus our Lord.

Matthew 7:13-14
enter through the narrow gate, wide is the road that leads to destruction, narrow is the road that leads to life
13 “Enter in by the narrow gate; for wide is the gate and broad is the way that leads to destruction, and many are those who enter in by it.
14 How narrow is the gate, and restricted is the way that leads to life! Few are those who find it.

Romans 12
cutting off the ways of this world
1 Therefore I urge you, brothers, by the mercies of God, to present your bodies a living sacrifice, holy, acceptable to God, which is your spiritual service.
2 Don’t be conformed to this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind, so that you may prove what is the good, well-pleasing, and perfect will of God.
3 For I say, through the grace that was given me, to every man who is among you, not to think of himself more highly than he ought to think; but to think reasonably, as God has apportioned to each person a measure of faith.
4 For even as we have many members in one body, and all the members don’t have the same function,
5 so we, who are many, are one body in Christ, and individually members one of another.
6 Having gifts differing according to the grace that was given to us, if prophecy, let us prophesy according to the proportion of our faith;
7 or service, let us give ourselves to service; or he who teaches, to his teaching;
8 or he who exhorts, to his exhorting: he who gives, let him do it with generosity; he who rules, with diligence; he who shows mercy, with cheerfulness.
9 Let love be without hypocrisy. Abhor that which is evil. Cling to that which is good.
10 In love of the brothers be tenderly affectionate to one another; in honor preferring one another;
11 not lagging in diligence; fervent in spirit; serving the Lord;
12 rejoicing in hope; enduring in troubles; continuing steadfastly in prayer;
13 contributing to the needs of the saints; given to hospitality.
14 Bless those who persecute you; bless, and don’t curse.
15 Rejoice with those who rejoice. Weep with those who weep.
16 Be of the same mind one toward another. Don’t set your mind on high things, but associate with the humble. Don’t be wise in your own conceits.
17 Repay no one evil for evil. Respect what is honorable in the sight of all men.
18 If it is possible, as much as it is up to you, be at peace with all men.
19 Don’t seek revenge yourselves, beloved, but give place to God’s wrath. For it is written, “Vengeance belongs to me; I will repay, says the Lord.”
20 Therefore “If your enemy is hungry, feed him. If he is thirsty, give him a drink; for in doing so, you will heap coals of fire on his head.”
21 Don’t be overcome by evil, but overcome evil with good.

Luke 10:38-42
Martha distracted by dinner while Mary sat at Jesus's feet; one thing matters and Mary has found it
38 As they went on their way, he entered into a certain village, and a certain woman named Martha received him into her house.
39 She had a sister called Mary, who also sat at Jesus’ feet, and heard his word.
40 But Martha was distracted with much serving, and she came up to him, and said, “Lord, don’t you care that my sister left me to serve alone? Ask her therefore to help me.”
41 Jesus answered her, “Martha, Martha, you are anxious and troubled about many things,
42 but one thing is needed. Mary has chosen the good part, which will not be taken away from her.”

John 15:4-11
remain in me and I will remain in you, apart from me you can do nothing, you will be filled with joy
4 Remain in me, and I in you. As the branch can’t bear fruit by itself, unless it remains in the vine, so neither can you, unless you remain in me.
5 I am the vine. You are the branches. He who remains in me, and I in him, the same bears much fruit, for apart from me you can do nothing.
6 If a man doesn’t remain in me, he is thrown out as a branch, and is withered; and they gather them, throw them into the fire, and they are burned.
7 If you remain in me, and my words remain in you, you will ask whatever you desire, and it will be done for you.
8 “In this is my Father glorified, that you bear much fruit; and so you will be my disciples.
9 Even as the Father has loved me, I also have loved you. Remain in my love.
10 If you keep my commandments, you will remain in my love; even as I have kept my Father’s commandments, and remain in his love.
11 I have spoken these things to you, that my joy may remain in you, and that your joy may be made full.

Psalm 40
David stuck in muck and mire, the Lord lifted him out of the slimy pit and set his feet on a rock
1 I waited patiently for Yahweh. He turned to me, and heard my cry.
2 He brought me up also out of a horrible pit, out of the miry clay. He set my feet on a rock, and gave me a firm place to stand.
3 He has put a new song in my mouth, even praise to our God. Many shall see it, and fear, and shall trust in Yahweh.
4 Blessed is the man who makes Yahweh his trust, and doesn’t respect the proud, nor such as turn away to lies.
5 Many, Yahweh, my God, are the wonderful works which you have done, and your thoughts which are toward us. They can’t be declared back to you. If I would declare and speak of them, they are more than can be counted.
6 Sacrifice and offering you didn’t desire. You have opened my ears. You have not required burnt offering and sin offering.
7 Then I said, “Behold, I have come. It is written about me in the book in the scroll.
8 I delight to do your will, my God. Yes, your law is within my heart.”
9 I have proclaimed glad news of righteousness in the great assembly. Behold, I will not seal my lips, Yahweh, you know.
10 I have not hidden your righteousness within my heart. I have declared your faithfulness and your salvation. I have not concealed your loving kindness and your truth from the great assembly.
11 Don’t withhold your tender mercies from me, Yahweh. Let your loving kindness and your truth continually preserve me.
12 For innumerable evils have surrounded me. My iniquities have overtaken me, so that I am not able to look up. They are more than the hairs of my head. My heart has failed me.
13 Be pleased, Yahweh, to deliver me. Hurry to help me, Yahweh.
14 Let them be disappointed and confounded together who seek after my soul to destroy it. Let them be turned backward and brought to dishonor who delight in my hurt.
15 Let them be desolate by reason of their shame that tell me, “Aha! Aha!”
16 Let all those who seek you rejoice and be glad in you. Let such as love your salvation say continually, “Let Yahweh be exalted!”
17 But I am poor and needy. May the Lord think about me. You are my help and my deliverer. Don’t delay, my God.

Psalm 23
scripture worth memorizing, turned to many times in life
1 Yahweh is my shepherd: I shall lack nothing.
2 He makes me lie down in green pastures. He leads me beside still waters.
3 He restores my soul. He guides me in the paths of righteousness for his name’s sake.
4 Even though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death, I will fear no evil, for you are with me. Your rod and your staff, they comfort me.
5 You prepare a table before me in the presence of my enemies. You anoint my head with oil. My cup runs over.
6 Surely goodness and loving kindness shall follow me all the days of my life, and I will dwell in Yahweh’s house forever.

1 Corinthians 13
memorized before parents' visit to practice patience and kindness
1 If I speak with the languages of men and of angels, but don’t have love, I have become sounding brass, or a clanging cymbal.
2 If I have the gift of prophecy, and know all mysteries and all knowledge; and if I have all faith, so as to remove mountains, but don’t have love, I am nothing.
3 If I give away all my goods to feed the poor, and if I give my body to be burned, but don’t have love, it profits me nothing.
4 Love is patient and is kind; love doesn’t envy. Love doesn’t brag, is not proud,
5 doesn’t behave itself inappropriately, doesn’t seek its own way, is not provoked, takes no account of evil;
6 doesn’t rejoice in unrighteousness, but rejoices with the truth;
7 bears all things, believes all things, hopes all things, endures all things.
8 Love never fails. But where there are prophecies, they will be done away with. Where there are various languages, they will cease. Where there is knowledge, it will be done away with.
9 For we know in part, and we prophesy in part;
10 but when that which is complete has come, then that which is partial will be done away with.
11 When I was a child, I spoke as a child, I felt as a child, I thought as a child. Now that I have become a man, I have put away childish things.
12 For now we see in a mirror, dimly, but then face to face. Now I know in part, but then I will know fully, even as I was also fully known.
13 But now faith, hope, and love remain—these three. The greatest of these is love.

Psalm 16
David declares God is his Lord, his inheritance, always beside him, will not leave him in the grave
1 Preserve me, God, for in you do I take refuge.
2 My soul, you have said to Yahweh, “You are my Lord. Apart from you I have no good thing.”
3 As for the saints who are in the earth, they are the excellent ones in whom is all my delight.
4 Their sorrows shall be multiplied who give gifts to another god. Their drink offerings of blood I will not offer, nor take their names on my lips.
5 Yahweh assigned my portion and my cup. You made my lot secure.
6 The lines have fallen to me in pleasant places. Yes, I have a good inheritance.
7 I will bless Yahweh, who has given me counsel. Yes, my heart instructs me in the night seasons.
8 I have set Yahweh always before me. Because he is at my right hand, I shall not be moved.
9 Therefore my heart is glad, and my tongue rejoices. My body shall also dwell in safety.
10 For you will not leave my soul in Sheol, neither will you allow your holy one to see corruption.
11 You will show me the path of life. In your presence is fullness of joy. In your right hand there are pleasures forever more.

Recap
The message in order, in a few minutes of reading.
Deborah taught from John 15 and the story of Mary and Martha, pressing into the question of why so many people who say they follow Jesus don't seem to change. She argued that real transformation comes not from a one-time decision but from daily habits, the spiritual disciplines, that close the gap between us and Christ. The sermon was part of an ongoing study on being rooted in Jesus.
What was said
Deborah opened by revisiting the previous week's ground: truth is what is based on reality, and lies are any deviation from it. Jesus told Pilate that one of the reasons He came was to teach truth, and that truth matters because it shapes how we actually live. Making a decision for Christ, she said, is like any real decision, it cuts something else off. The narrow gate in Matthew 7 is not just about getting to heaven; it is the entrance to a new and countercultural way of living.
She drew on a recent interview with author Eric Metaxas and his book "Letter to the American Church," which compares the silence of today's church on questions of human dignity with the silence of the German church in the 1930s. A story from one of Erwin Lutzer's books stayed with her: a man who was in choir practice when trains carrying people to extermination camps passed by outside, and the choir director told them to sing louder. Deborah connected that image directly to the study's call for believers to be rooted firmly enough in truth that they are willing to speak up.
The Mary and Martha passage from Luke 10 gave her the sermon's center of gravity. Jesus did not tell Martha that her responsibilities were unimportant, Deborah said, but that Martha was so consumed by temporary details that she was missing the one thing that mattered. Mary had already tasted how good Jesus was and would not let anything pull her away from listening to Him. That hunger for more of Jesus, Deborah said, is what this whole study is trying to stir up.
From John 15, she read Jesus' words on remaining in the vine. Apart from Him, nothing we do carries eternal weight. But if we remain in Him and His words remain in us, we produce fruit, a significant life that matters for eternity, and we are filled with overflowing joy. She noted that genuinely joyful Christians are rare and asked whether that absence of joy might be a sign that people are not actually remaining in Christ.
The spiritual disciplines, she said, are the practices that close that gap. She listed Bible reading, listening to solid teachers, prayer, meditation, memorizing scripture, community, silence, singing, Sabbath rest, serving, and gratitude. She pushed back on the idea that effort in these practices is the same as trying to earn God's approval. Citing Dallas Willard, she put it this way: grace is not opposed to effort, but it is opposed to earning. The disciplines are how we partner with God to change, not how we earn a better standing with Him.
She told a personal story about her parents' visit to illustrate the difference between trying to manage behavior and training through the disciplines. Knowing she would be exhausted and easily triggered, she got up early each morning, used the Lectio 365 meditation app, and memorized 1 Corinthians 13, visualizing herself responding with patience rather than reacting. When her father's only comment on her study guide was a missed capitalization, she was able to respond gently instead of firing back. By the end of the visit he told her he and her mother were proud of her, which she took as evidence that responding in Jesus' way had opened a door that her own instincts would have slammed shut.
She closed by asking everyone to take inventory over the coming weeks: what they are reading, who is speaking into their lives, how they start their mornings, where their time goes, what they turn to when they are anxious, and what narrative runs in their heads. The invitation was simple: identify one bad habit, replace it with one spiritual practice, and show up. David's words from Psalm 16 gave her the final image, a man who could say he would not be shaken because he knew the Lord was right beside him, and who arrived at that confidence through a lifelong practice of seeking God.
Doing a Bible study?
Here is a guide we have prepared for you: the passages in order, questions for the group, and room to write.
- Deborah said that the narrow gate in Matthew 7 is not about your eternal destiny but about the entrance to a new way of living after you follow Jesus. What does that distinction mean to you personally, and how does it change the way you think about discipleship?
- Deborah drew a parallel between the German church staying silent in the 1930s and the American church today. Where do you feel the tension between staying quiet to avoid conflict and speaking up about things that matter, and how do you navigate that in your own life?
