0:03
Good morning, everyone. How are you? You made it. You're here. Hey, real quick.
0:10
If you lost a pair of gray mittens that say loving life or something like that on them, they're in the they were in the parking lot and now they're in the building.
0:18
So just thought I'd let
0:20
you know. Hey, would you stand up? We'll we'll sing together. From first Timothy, there's one God and one mediator between God and mankind mankind, the man Jesus Christ.
0:44
He takes our place and stands in front of God all night. He speaks on our behalf since we don't have the right. He pleads before the God who judges hearts are man. Our mediator serve the sentence for our sin. There
1:07
is. There is only one God. There is only one mediator standing between God and man. Is the only way to salvation.
1:43
He found the captives. He found the captives. Broke the bondage of our chains. We have redemption through the price that he has paid. He gave his life to purchase freedom from the fall.
2:05
A mediator was the ransom for us all. There is. There is only one mediator standing between God and man. This is the only way to salvation again. There is only one God.
2:41
There is only one mediator standing between God and man is the only way to salvation.
3:15
Amen. Y'all have a seat. Have a few announcements for you this morning. Where are they? What are they?
3:22
Actually, I'm going invite. Is Kelly Dunn in the room right now? She will be in a minute. She can come but we'll come back around to that one. Home Sweet Home, Monday nights at First B.
3:31
Yes, we're on tomorrow. Sam is cooking, and we're in part two of Proverbs. Wisdom cries aloud. It is woven into the fabric of the universe. It is there for the taking if we would call on the Lord.
3:44
Amen. Wisdom. Sounds good. Wisdom. Monday nights, meal music and message, 06:00 tomorrow night.
3:50
That happens at the same time as Awana. Awana Kids Club starts off in this room. We just pour in scripture into the minds, hopefully, of the kids, the ears at least. I think it's reaching their minds and that's what reaches their hearts and so, we're pouring it in every Monday night here, 05:45 ish to about 07:30 and that should be happening here same time as Monday night. There is a Sunday school class that starts today for young men and through from eighth grade through twelfth grade.
4:22
It'll start today. It'll be during this service. So, when we have the time where it's Peak Children's Church downstairs, it's also the time for a teenage boys class, eighth grade through twelfth grade. Tim Dalton. Hey, Tim.
4:36
Would you stand up for just a second? Tim is teaching this study. It's called Why Jesus and you're studying why it is that Jesus really is that awesome. What makes him so awesome? Awesome.
4:59
Thank you. Tim Dalton right there. If you want to send your youngins with him, that would be great. If you are a young one and you want to go with him, please do. That sounds good.
5:08
There's also such study for girls downstairs at the same time, eighth to twelfth grade girls. Snowmobile retreat is coming up. It's January 24 through the twenty sixth. I don't see anybody waving from the back about that but that is going to be a fun time. Twenty fourth, twenty fifth, twenty sixth, Friday, Saturday, Sunday.
5:27
Guys getting together, eating good food, hanging out together, studying God's word some in the evenings but outplaying on snowmobiles or cross country skis or snow shoes, something like that during the most of the daytime hours. Bring your earplugs from experience, alright? Guys, snore. Something awful. But anyway, snowmobile retreat.
5:48
It's not a snore mobile retreat. Sorry, bike club is Wednesday mornings at six. It's not only here though. That group has starts here. They had an informational meeting last week.
6:02
Fight Club is for guys. Buy men, for men to reach men. It's an encouragement and challenge. Ten weeks of challenges. Most of them started last week but they'd be glad to have you come on in and some of those groups will be meeting at other times.
6:16
If 06:00 Wednesday morning doesn't sound enthralling to you, then maybe you could come and see one time and then figure out when another group be meeting fight club for men. We've got this study. Kelly, would you wanna come up and do a little announce about this? Oh, Kelly Ann Ann.
6:36

It's $12 I got mine last week. Came pretty quick. Let's see. 10 waves. So, we're going to dig into the first chapter entitled Delight in Jesus.
7:30
Six more ladies. Six more ladies. We have four.
7:33
Six
7:33
ladies. Sign up with Anne. Please.
7:36
Thank you.
7:36
Okay.
7:37
That's awesome.
7:37
Thank you.
7:38
Good job. Robert J Morgan actually wrote the book too. He's he's on the board of the seminary where I went to seminary and he's a good friend. That's that's nice. Good guy.
7:48
Hey, what are we doing between services today? There's a congregational meeting. If you're a member or if you just want to hang out, you can't vote if you're not a member if you want to hang out, you can hang out for the congregational meeting. If you are a member, please do. Hang back and stay and we'll be going through votes for elders and different positions for the office on board offices on the board of trustees and annual budget.
8:13
So, if you want to know about that, hang around and that's happening between services. Also, there is connect hour happening between services. You're welcome to go down and have a cup of coffee and a donut. I tried to prepare a short sermon so you had time to go down there and come back if you want to. We'll see how that works.
8:31
Anything else? There's one more. One more announcement. I didn't, it didn't make the bulletin this week and it didn't make the slides this week but there's another Christian women's group. They're getting together newly forming, starting prayer group on Friday mornings from 08:30 to ten at Cecilia and Kirk Connell's home in Driggs.
8:49
So, that's 08:30 to ten in Driggs. Anybody interested can call her. I have her number right here and you can let me know and I'll get you in touch with her. Alright? Are we all together?
9:00
Yes. Alright. Would you stand up and greet one another and we'll bring you back together with a song.
10:03
Alright. I've got a firm foundation. I've got a firm foundation. I rock the almost solid ground as nations rise and fall. Kingdoms once strong now shaken.
10:23
We trust forever in your name, The name
10:29
of Jesus. And we trust. We trust the name of Jesus. And you are the only king forever. Almighty God, we lift you higher.
10:47
You are the only king forever, forevermore. You are victorious. You are the only king forever. Almighty God, we lift you higher. You are the only king forever, forevermore.
11:06
You are victorious.
11:12
Unmatched, unmatched in all your wisdom. In love and justice, you will reign. Everything will bow. We bring our expectations, our hope
11:32
is anchored in your name, the name of Jesus. And we trust. We trust the name of Jesus. You are the only king forever. Almighty God, we lift you higher.
11:55
You are the only king forever, forevermore. You are victorious. You are the only king forever. Almighty God, we lift you higher. You are the only king forever, forevermore.
12:13
You are We lift our better eye. We lift the name of Jesus. From age to age you reign, your kingdom has no end. We lift our better right. We lift the name of Jesus from age to age you reign.
12:52
Your kingdom has no end, You are the only king forever. Almighty God, we lift you higher. You are the only king forever. Forevermore, you are victorious. You are the only king forever.
13:13
Almighty God, we lift you higher. You are the only king forever. Forevermore, You are victorious.
13:38
Can I share a Psalm with you? It's Psalm 29. The Lord rules over the floodwaters. The Lord reigns as king forever. Do you believe this?
13:48
We sang of it. I do. The Lord gives his people strength. The Lord blesses them with peace.
14:08
When darkness tries to roll over my bones, when sorrow comes to steal the joy I own, A brokenness and pain is all I know.
14:26
Oh, I won't be shaking. I won't be shaking my fear. And my fear doesn't stand a chance when I stand in your love. My fear doesn't stand a chance when I stand in your love. My fear doesn't stand a chance when I stand in your love.
14:57
And shame no longer. Shame no longer has a place to hide. I am not captive to the lies. I'm not afraid to leave my past behind.
15:17
Oh, I won't be shaking. I won't be shaking. And my fear doesn't stand a chance when I stand in your love. My fear doesn't stand a chance when I stand in your love. My fear doesn't stand a chance when I stand in your love.
15:48
And there is power. Let's sing a bit.
15:50
There's power that can break off every chain. There's power that can empty out a grave. There's resurrection power that can save. There's power in your name, power in your name. And my fear doesn't stand a chance when I stand in your love.
16:22
My fear doesn't stand a chance when I stand in your love. My fear doesn't stand a chance when I stand in your
16:50
God, we sing it, but we believe it. And Lord, when we don't believe, help us in our unbelief. There's power that can break off every chain. There is power that can empty out the grave. It has.
17:03
It did. It you triumphantly rose in victory. Thank you lord for that power. Thank you for resurrection power that can save us by belief. By belief.
17:16
Amen.
17:40
I find my rest without you. I fall apart. You're the one that guides my heart.
17:57
And, Lord, I need you. Oh, I need you.
18:05
Every hour I need Where sin rots deep, your grace is mourned. Where grace is
18:31
found is where you are. Where you are and where you are. Lord, I am free. Holiness is Christ in me. And Lord, I need you.
18:53
Oh, I need you. Every hour I need you. My won't defense, my righteousness. Oh, I wanna need you.
19:17
So teach my song to rise to you. Oh, when
19:24
temptation comes my way. And when I cannot stand, I fall on me. Jesus, you are. Jesus, you're my hope and stay. And, Lord, I need you.
19:42
Oh, I need you. Need you. You're my one. You're my one. Defense, my righteousness.
20:13
Oh, God,
20:14
how
20:35
I'm gonna invite the frontline team to come forward. Well, that's a delight. Would you pray with me? God, thank you for youth and vibrance. I thank you for life and vitality.
20:52
Thank you for what you've given, lord. Thank you for the endurance that you lend an aid to us through Christ. Lord, I thank you. Delighted to be here this morning in the presence of many witnesses to your power, your strength, your love, your concern, and where we don't feel it. Lord, may we trust in you and one another.
21:18
God, would you take what we are offering right now, lord, in this offering time? Would you take this and do your kingdom's work? However, you see fit. We want to spread your love and your mercy and your grace and that's available in Christ alone. Would you allow us lord to advance the gospel?
21:37
In Jesus name, we want this to affect this community but we want it to go throughout this nation and hemisphere and even the world to the very uttermost parts. God, would you do your will and your way through us this morning? Amen.
22:15
Do receive the food of your holy word. Take your truth, plant it deep in us. In our acts of love and our deeds of faith. Speak, oh, Lord, and fulfill in us all your purposes for your glory. Speak, oh, Lord, and renew our minds.
23:13
Help us grasp the heights of your plans for us. Truths are unchanged from the dawn of time that we'll echo down through eternity. And by grace, we'll stand on your promises. And by faith, we'll walk as you walk with us. Speak, oh, Lord, till your church is built
24:25
children's church downstairs and also for young men's and young ladies study, eight through twelfth grade. For guys and gals this week. How are y'all? Good. That's good.
24:42
I am going to back up just a little bit. Last week, we covered these verses but we covered em. Oh, I think a little differently that I'm going to cover em today. I'm I'm dropping back the grammar. I feel like there was an emphasis last week that was really good for last week but I want to understand what's going on a little more than that.
25:02
When it when you're talking about, y'all probably had a speech class in college at some point, right? They talk about logos, the content, pathos, the emotion, and ethos like the heart from which it's coming. You know what I'm talking about? No? Yes.
25:18
Last week was full of pathos for me and ethos, I think but logos, I was running through to get to something and this is what I was getting to. This section right here, this is the all of we're going to cover today is right here but I'm going to slow down just a little bit and go through it a little bit at a time but this is it. Therefore, since we have so great a cloud of witnesses and that was my emphasis last week, not just Abel and Enoch and Moses but also those people in your life that were good and godly examples who have gone on before you. They're a great cloud of witnesses and that's what we talked about. I kind of ran through the rest of this but I want to spend some time on it.
25:58
So, here we go. Therefore, we're starting right there. It's only going to be this much, I promise, okay? Therefore, therefore, kicks back to everything in chapter eleven's hall of faith. All the way back to Abel and Enoch and Moses and Noah and all of those faithful ones and if you look, almost all of em, you can see some sort of deficiency in their life.
26:21
Let's call it a sin or shortfall in almost all, not all of em. Abel was kind of hard because there's not a whole lot of history of Abel. He he did something good and then he was killed for it. But all of chapter eleven's hall of faith gets us to this. Therefore, therefore, since and because of this, because of everything that was shared chapter, few paragraphs, because of that, since we have that great cloud witnesses that have gone on before us by faith, by faith, by faith, by faith, by faith.
26:52
They did everything that they did by faith because we have that history of examples by faith. Since we have so great a cloud of witnesses that are surrounding us. Now, I wanna stop right there and say the great cloud of witnesses, you know, the heavenly hosts is a big, big, big, big group, a crowd as what we would like a crowd like a concert and this is what this is conjuring up. Since we're going into an athletic analogy, it may be it may be, maybe because it can be grammatically. It may be that we're considering that we're the ones that are running the race and on the field.
27:28
We'll get to that in just a minute. But we've got a great cloud of witnesses that are surrounding us. People don't just cease to be. Okay? They do die but they don't cease to be.
27:40
So there are some commentators and some people that believe that we are surrounded by all of those cognizant and knowing souls that are paying attention. Your good and godly examples Full and understanding and without sorrow in God's heart, in his bosom with God to be absent from the body, to be present with the Lord and Jesus is seated at the right hand of the father interceding for you and they're pulling for you. Okay, that's one way of viewing this. We're surrounded by a great cloud of witnesses. We are the ones who are still on the field running the race but we've got all of these great cloud of witnesses surrounding us.
28:28
That's one way of seeing it. The other is we've got all these witnesses in front of us and can emulate even though we are flawed just like they were flawed. We can by faith keep on going forward. Witness, the word witness, that's it in Greek, Marteron, Marteron of witnesses. A witness or an eyewitness or an ear witness.
28:50
Someone who can say what they have seen or what they have heard. So we're surrounded by a great cloud of witnesses. Now, you see martyr on. Martyr on is the word is martyr. Right?
29:06
Those who have died before us in faith. The word is witness. It's in the court of law. Martyr on would be used of witnesses. Those who can say what they have seen and what they have heard and so, I want you to think about that for a minute.
29:21
The the word for us has changed meaning to someone who is killed for their faith but it's someone who's willing to say what it is that they have seen and heard. That's a good, I think that that's helpful to me. So, therefore, since we have so great a cloud of witnesses that are surrounding us, let us also. The let us also tends to say the other grammatical possibility for this great cloud of witnesses. It's not that they're paying attention to us but that we're paying attention to them.
29:52
We're paying attention to what they have done and I think that that's probably more of the sense here but both of them are possible. So, I'm giving you both ideas. I think both of them are helpful depending on who you are, how you see things. Let us also then, since they proved to be witnesses of the faith. Let us also then lay aside every encumbrance.
30:17
Encumbrance is that which weighs you down. Anything that weighs you down and in particular, at this time where they were dressed in robes, we're into an athletic analogy and if you're dressed in robes and heavy stuff, you know, toga, whatever type stuff and you wanna run a race, that ain't what you wanna have on when you're running a race, right? Nowadays, people wear less and less and less and less and it's not really encumbering them a whole lot but this is saying, let us lay aside everything that weighs us down. And ties us up that we can trip over. Now, it's every encumbrance and the sin.
31:00
So, I think that it's churchy church. He's a preacher. Of course, he's going to talk about sin and I bet he's against it. Yes, I'm against it but every encumbrance and sin says that those are two different things. There are some things that are not sin.
31:15
That can weigh us down. Do you agree? Americans. Yes. From Jackson.
31:21
Do you agree that there are some things that are not necessarily sin but they can weigh us down? There are. And so, let us lay aside every encumbrance and the sin which so easily entangles and it does. Sin is a distraction. It is a distraction from the next phrase here.
31:47
I have 42 slides this morning. I usually have 80 and as I'm thinking about this, I think there were things that I used to be able to do that I can't do anymore And this week, I've run into two different situations. Sometimes, people call and say, hey, mom really don't need to be driving anymore. This is this is a real problem in our family and for everybody that she hit in the last month. Okay.
32:14
So, can you come with us and talk about this? There are some things that we eventually have to lay aside that we used to be able to handle and we used to be able to do and we can't do that anymore. That every encumbrance, I want to back back up. I've admitted from this stage more than once that I struggle with my weight. I struggle with staying healthy, you know, and Kurt Ripley heard me do that and he gave me a Fitbit.
32:39
He helped. That's that's great. That's sweet. I always explain it jokingly to say, you know, somebody noticed I was fat and they gave me a Fitbit but it was it was because I had admitted it. I had said it out loud right here.
32:52
So, I was looking again this morning and when we get our attention diverted, it's easy to go astray. So, if I check, I also have a little app on my phone and if I check it every day, it goes down. It's amazing. If I check every day, I put in what I eat. I know how much I've exercised.
33:13
Weight goes down. It's pretty neat. If I don't check it every day in between, it goes up. Now, as far as our sanctification chart up here, we want to see kind of it going upwards and if we want to see it going upwards, then, we pay attention and we do it daily. Let us lay aside every encumbrance.
33:34
It can be very good and not sinful. The encumbrances. Sometimes, it's just busyness. All of the things are good things but it keeps us from fixing our eyes on Jesus. That's what we're getting to.
33:47
The scripture says, Jesus himself often with withdraw into the wilderness to pray and get close to God. He was God but he would himself. Do you think you're any better at this than Jesus? You need to withdraw. Take a moment.
34:04
Regularly to withdraw and get in touch with and lay aside the encumbrances. Yes, I need to do that but it can wait until I am ready. Or no, I don't need to do that and the sin. I don't need to do that and it's bad for me and it's bad for everybody around me. God, help me.
34:27
Get rid of that. Way back when playing horse and basketball, you know, horse, you get to the end of the game. Everybody's gotta have a clincher shot. So, everybody else has got more letters than you and you want to close it out. I used to have one where I would bounce it off my forehead.
34:43
That explains a lot, doesn't it? Like, bam, right off the forehead, off the backboard, and then, that was the goal. Yeah. I had another one that I used to be able to do that I can't do anymore. I used to be able to hold a cinder block in my left hand and dunk with my right hand.
35:00
On a 10 foot goal, I can't do that anymore. In fact, I carry two of em around with me all the time. There are things you used to be able to do and they were not encumbering you at one time that you might need to lay down and there are some sin that you definitely need to lay down. You can look to Jesus. This is where we're going.
35:23
Let us run though. If you want to run, you don't want to do it in a toga and you don't want to do it in heavy garments. You want to shed the stuff that is holding you down. I I also think of barnacles on a boat. Every once in a while, you need to clean the barnacles off of your boat because it messes up the way that you're able to steer and navigate through life.
35:45
So, the next phrase is the operative one in this sentence is, let us run. Let's run. It's a command to run. Actually, let us is third person command or second person in this case is include me. Let's all together.
35:57
Let us run. Let's run. Athletic metaphor. Let us run with endurance the race that set before us. Now, how are we to do that?
36:07
I talked to y'all. Some of you are up, some of you are down, and some of you say, man, how we going get through? How are we going to keep on going? How is it that we're going to keep on going? Well, the next thing says, fixing our eyes on Jesus.
36:21
Staying focused on him. For me, the weight chart helps and I hope it helps y'all because I admitting in front of people is not easy. But if I don't, I end up at the McDonald's drive thru. You know what I'm saying? That's the truth.
36:38
That's the truth. As long as I am sharing this with you and I know there are some of you who are in 12 step programs and I love that. I love that because you're sharing your burden with people who have the same burden and it helps. So, there are encumbrances, there is sin, lay those things aside. Colossians three, right?
36:58
Lay those things aside. Putting off and putting on, putting on Christ. Let's fix our eyes on Jesus. Meditate on him. John calls Jesus the word of God and how do you get to know him?
37:13
Get to know him in the pages of his word for sure. On Christmas, I said, hey, there are gospels of John back there and a bunch of em left with people. Somebody called me yesterday who had come in from out of state to Kurt's funeral and he said, the time there changed me and my life and perspective on. He said, what I would have called religion. And he said, what do I need to do next?
37:39
I said, get to know Jesus. Get to know Jesus. You can do that through the gospel of John. You can get to do it through Matthew, Mark, and Luke but John, it's it's pointed. It's about what you believe.
37:51
And what you believe about Jesus. These things have been written so that you may believe and believing have life in his name. Fix your eyes on Jesus. Pay more attention, the writer of Hebrews would say, to what you've already heard so that you do not drift away from it. Pay more attention to Jesus.
38:06
Fix your eyes on Jesus. He's the author and perfecter. We're getting to that. Fixing our eyes on Jesus. Pay attention to Jesus.
38:15
Now, he also said, well, I thought surely you're going to tell me about church. Church is important. Very, very, very important but I said, get to know Jesus. Get to know what he acts like. Get to know how he is.
38:28
Get to know how loving and merciful and gracious and wise. He is and then go to church and if that church looks like Jesus, stick with it and if it doesn't, move on. When you're a believer, it's easy to go astray and fall into things that easily entangles. I've used this example before. I had two Boy Scouts wanted a religious merit badge which is funny in its own self.
38:53
A merit badge for Christianity. Sorry. By the way, the Baptist Association that I grew up in in Georgia was named after a person. It was two Rs and two Ts but it's the Merit Baptist Association. It's not about what you merit.
39:12
God's unmerited favor is what you have to receive. Nothing in your hands. Nothing in my hands I bring simply to the cross I cling, right? So, there are two boy scouts and one of em has never been in church in his life and the other one has been in church his whole life and he's they're both probably 10 or 12, I guess. I don't know exactly how old and I explained, I asked the leaders.
39:34
I said, you know I'm going to share the gospel, right? When they're doing this, this is this is what I have. This is all I have. The message of the cross. I shared the message of the cross just like I'm scared with y'all all these times.
39:45
Jesus came, lived a perfect life. He voluntarily and sacrificially gave up that perfect record in death, death on a cross by obedience and in humility for the benefit of everyone who would trust in him. That's it. That's the gospel right there and so, the kid who never been in church before said, that sounds good. I'll go with that.
40:09
Kiddo had been in church. I said, now, what is it? After going over the review, said, tell me what it is. Tell me what it is that makes us right with God and the little boy who've been in church said, I gotta be nice to my sister. I gotta do this.
40:20
I gotta do that. I gotta do this. I gotta do that and he had a list, a long list actually. I can't say these things. I don't need to do.
40:26
I was like, the kid goes, you said it was Jesus, right? I said, yeah, he goes, Imma go with that. Amen. That's it. That is it.
40:37
Every encumbrance might be a religious encumbrance, okay? It might be some errant view of God or holiness that you're carrying with you, that you need to lay aside and fix your eyes on the goal and the goal is Jesus and the goal is the author and perfecter of our faith. The author part of this is used already in Hebrews two ten for it was fit for him, for for whom things. This is Jesus and through whom are all things. Nothing was created without him and bringing many sons to glory.
41:11
He died as a ransom for all of those who would put their trust in him by faith. To perfect the author of their salvation. Jesus is the author of it. He's the pioneer of it. He denied self and acted in obedience, humble obedience even to the point of death on a cross.
41:32
He did that and it says through sufferings. Now, what were these first century Jewish background believers going through? They're going through sufferings. They're going through persecutions. They were going through a hard time and they were being tempted to deny Christ and go back to their religiosity.
41:49
Author is the originator. The author, the founder, the prince, the leader. Actually, it's only used two other times. Here we go. Sorry, Blake.
41:58
Did that properly. It is the first in a long procession. He is the firstborn of many. Brethren, properly the first and long procession. He is a file leader who pioneers the way for many others to follow.
42:13
Jesus is that, Archegos. It does not strictly mean author like he just wrote the story but a person who is the originator or founder is involved in the story. He's founded a movement. He continues as their leader and Jesus is and fix your eyes upon it. It's used two other places both of them in Acts but the but put to death the prince of life, the author of life, the originator of life, the archae gas of life.
42:44
Acts five thirty one, he is the one whom God has exalted to his right hand in perfect agreement with Hebrews as a prince or author and a savior to grant repentance to Israel and the forgiveness of sins. Fixing our eyes on Jesus. Jesus. I know there's such a thing as religious delusion and I hear people sometimes that I think, what you're doing is not looking to Jesus. It's religious delusion and you're just saying a name that you don't know the guy you're talking about about and that's heartbreaking.
43:19
Fixing our eyes on Jesus, the author and the perfecter of our faith, who for the joy set before him now, Caras, Joy, and Cara, joy, properly are the awareness of God's grace and that is his unmerited favor. So, though we don't deserve it, he still loves and he is leaning towards with an offer of good things even though we don't deserve it. Properly, the awareness of God's grace, favor, joy. Grace recognized as joy. If you understand how you don't deserve it and yet you receive it anyway.
43:53
If you don't deserve the transformational power that God has offered but you receive it anyway. Joy is what that produces. Someone who has been set free, you can see joy. So, here it is. Who for the joy set before him endured the cross.
44:10
Now, he had a gruesome, gruesome, gruesome death and it was a shame. The reason that they did it the way that they did it was public humiliation on purpose. For the joy set before him, he endured the cross which was awful and it says that despising the shame. Despising the shame is a a good way. There's another couple of ways you can do it.
44:33
Jesus endured the cross literally means scorning the scorn because there were people there who would be mocking and we read about some of em in the New Testament but he was willing to do that for the sake of other people. Having despised its shame and knowing, he went forward voluntarily anyway. Now, for those first century Jewish background folks, there were a lot of things that were absolutely shameful and they knew it. He's saying, belief in Christ even though they think it's a shame and they think it's a farce. You put that out of your mind.
45:13
That's an encumbrance. Put that out of your mind and fix your eyes on the goal. Christ, seated at the right hand of the father and interceding for you. The great cloud of witnesses that have gone before us, you pay attention to that and do so by faith, not by sight because what you're seeing is tempting you in either one direction or the other. So, fixing our eyes on Jesus, the author and perfector of faith, who for the joy set before him endured the cross, despising the shame and he has sat down because the work is finished, the exhortion, very first part of this book, first four verses of Hebrews, it says, he sat down at the right hand of the majesty on high.
45:53
Later on, it says, he is seated at the right hand of God and interceding for you. For the joy set before him and it's a joy. It's a joy to be in the presence of God and interceding for you. Does that make y'all feel better? I've seen confused look quite honestly.
46:13
Who for the joy set before him endured the cross, despising the shame. He knew that it would be worth it. He was tempted and said, father, if there be any other way that this can be done, let's do that but not my will done. He denied self. Not my will but thy will be done.
46:36
And for that reason, he humbled himself and for that reason, God has exalted him and given him a name that's above every name and a seat at the right hand of majesty. Now, this consider him. This last verse we're going on. For consider him, consider him, I think immediately to chapter three. Chapter three, it says, carefully consider the apostle and the high priest of our confession, Jesus and that's great.
46:59
It's a different word. It's this word and I've told you it's properly. It's to think up and down to a conclusion. It is getting all the way through it. All of your thinking about Jesus, getting through it, and resolutely deciding on him and that's a great word, not the same word here.
47:15
This one is more intent. And it's almost the same. It's which is second person plural imperative. This is a command to those who have put their faith in Christ but are tempted to turn away. This is the command to reason up to a conclusion by moving through whatever thought process may be needed.
47:42
Consider this every possible way and we're already well, he's given us 11 chapters of things to consider. Analysis, add things up, reckoning, go all the way through with the premise all the way to a conclusion especially and I like this part. This is straight dictionary definition. I didn't come up with this, alright? By repeated and nuanced reflection that advances up the levels of truth.
48:07
There, you can keep on studying Jesus and keep on getting more out of it. You can have the Boy Scout example of, yeah, I'm going with that. And then study it and go, wow, the way he reacted to religiosity is kind of amazing. Wow, the way that he reacted to someone caught in adultery was amazing. Wow, he befuddled people because he acted out of grace and mercy and love and shared.
48:38
Life abundant. Can't be good enough to get in, Nicodemus. You can't be bad enough to be excluded, Samaritan woman. You can keep on studying him forever and that's what the author of Hebrews is saying to do. Keep on considering.
48:55
Keep on considering it because it'll just keep getting better. You're not going to find flaw. I dare you to read the New Testament. Read John. Read the book of John and come away not liking Jesus.
49:05
I don't think you can do it. Consider him who has endured such hostility by sinners against himself. Christ and the writer of Hebrews are not asking us to do anything that Christ himself has not already done. Consider him fully who has endured such hostility by sinners against himself. He did it first.
49:28
He's the pioneer, author, originator, archegos but why should we do that? And this is the thing that people often come and say, how am I going to get through? So, the sow that there, so that you will not grow weary and lose heart. Do you feel like, do you feel weary? Sometimes, some of you don't feel weary nearly as much as others.
49:47
That's that's fine. But this is fixing your eyes on Jesus is to help you not grow weary and lose heart. The other day at the funeral, I called on Rich Stig to come up for the benediction. He knew it ahead of time. I called him ahead of time.
50:05
I wish I had Rich Stig right here because this is the last life. I've laid out everything that I know about this. Oh, no, not everything. There's something more. Y'all, it's a collective thing.
50:20
This is a collective thing. Now, yes, it's for each individual that's in this group. That's who I'm writing to but the continuing body of Christ on Earth is y'all, me, and y'all together. We are carrying out the work of God by denying self, by humbling ourselves, and by going forward in obedience to what he's called us to do, scorning the shame from either side. Going forward and following after our pioneer.
50:50
Would y'all pray with me just a second? I'll ask the band to come back up. The words last song are really really good. God, would you help us? In Jesus name, we ask you, would you help us?
51:10
Help us to see, lord, him when we're fixing our eyes on him. Help us to see who he really is Instead of some distorted icon or representation that does not get after the heart of God. Would you help us? We look to you. We're humbling ourselves before you lord and resisting the temptation of the evil one, our adversary.
51:38
Stay in sober. Stay in vigilant lord and we're asking for you that you would confirm and perfect and strengthen and establish us like you tell us in first Peter, I pray lord that you would confirm and strengthen and establish and you're the author and perfecter of faith. Lord, would you perfect our faith? May it have a difference. In other people's lives so that more may know you and trust in you and be able therefore to get through believing, have life in your name.
52:10
In Jesus name, amen.
52:18
Would you stand? We'll sing together.
52:26
As I rise, strength of God, go
52:33
before. Lift me up.
52:38
As I wait. Eyes of God. Look upon being my side. As I wait, heart of God, satisfied
53:13
and sustained.
53:16
As I hear. Voice of God,
53:23
lead me on. Be my God. Me all around me.
54:03
And as I go hand of
54:07
God, my defense
54:13
by my side as I rest. Breath of God fall upon.
54:25
Bring me peace. Bring me peace above and below me, before and behind me in every eye that sees me. Christ be all around me above and below me before and behind me. In every eye that sees me, grasp beyond me.
54:59
Singing your life and your death.
55:17
Your death, your blood will shed for every moment. Every moment above and below me, before and behind me. In every eye that sees me, grasping all around me, above and below me.
56:01
Amen. Colossians three one says this, since then, since then, you have been raised with Christ. Now, set your heart on things above where Christ is seated at the right hand of of the father God. In Jesus name, lord, I pray to be so. Amen.
