Pastor drew a straight line between the warnings Paul gave Timothy and the pressures people in Jackson face today. It was, as he put it, more of a preaching message than a teaching message, and he meant it that way. the preacher opened by dropping...

Talk about it
- The pastor talked about Amos delivering an unpopular message to people who thought things were going well for them. When has God's word confronted you at a time when life felt comfortable, and how did you respond?
- Paul tells Timothy to flee materialism, and the pastor applied that directly to life in Jackson. What does fleeing materialism look like in practical terms where you live and work?
- The sermon listed three things Scripture tells us to flee: materialism, sexual immorality, and idolatry. The pastor described idolatry as anything that takes God's place in a person's life. What are some things that can quietly move into that place without a person even noticing?
- The pastor read the Oswald Chambers question: 'Am I getting nobler, better, more helpful, more humble as I get older, or am I getting more self-assertive?' How would you honestly answer that question about yourself right now?
- The sermon closed by asking what you are desiring, what you are craving, what you are fleeing, and what you are pursuing. Which of those four questions is hardest for you to answer honestly, and why?
