John 21:1-8

Jesus manifests himself to disciples at the Sea of Tiberias, they catch nothing all night

1 After these things, Jesus revealed himself again to the disciples at the sea of Tiberias. He revealed himself this way.

2 Simon Peter, Thomas called Didymus, Nathanael of Cana in Galilee, and the sons of Zebedee, and two others of his disciples were together.

3 Simon Peter said to them, “I’m going fishing.” They told him, “We are also coming with you.” They immediately went out, and entered into the boat. That night, they caught nothing.

4 But when day had already come, Jesus stood on the beach, yet the disciples didn’t know that it was Jesus.

5 Jesus therefore said to them, “Children, have you anything to eat?” They answered him, “No.”

6 He said to them, “Cast the net on the right side of the boat, and you will find some.” They cast it therefore, and now they weren’t able to draw it in for the multitude of fish.

7 That disciple therefore whom Jesus loved said to Peter, “It’s the Lord!” So when Simon Peter heard that it was the Lord, he wrapped his coat around him (for he was naked), and threw himself into the sea.

8 But the other disciples came in the little boat (for they were not far from the land, but about two hundred cubits away), dragging the net full of fish.

John 21:9-14

Jesus invites disciples to come and dine, breakfast on the beach, third appearance after resurrection

9 So when they got out on the land, they saw a fire of coals there, and fish laid on it, and bread.

10 Jesus said to them, “Bring some of the fish which you have just caught.”

11 Simon Peter went up, and drew the net to land, full of great fish, one hundred fifty-three; and even though there were so many, the net wasn’t torn.

12 Jesus said to them, “Come and eat breakfast.” None of the disciples dared inquire of him, “Who are you?” knowing that it was the Lord.

13 Then Jesus came and took the bread, gave it to them, and the fish likewise.

14 This is now the third time that Jesus was revealed to his disciples, after he had risen from the dead.

John 21:15-17

Jesus asks Peter three times do you love me, tells him to feed and tend his sheep

15 So when they had eaten their breakfast, Jesus said to Simon Peter, “Simon, son of Jonah, do you love me more than these?” He said to him, “Yes, Lord; you know that I have affection for you.” He said to him, “Feed my lambs.”

16 He said to him again a second time, “Simon, son of Jonah, do you love me?” He said to him, “Yes, Lord; you know that I have affection for you.” He said to him, “Tend my sheep.”

17 He said to him the third time, “Simon, son of Jonah, do you have affection for me?” Peter was grieved because he asked him the third time, “Do you have affection for me?” He said to him, “Lord, you know everything. You know that I have affection for you.” Jesus said to him, “Feed my sheep.

John 21:18-23

Jesus tells Peter how he will die and says follow me, Peter asks about John

18 Most certainly I tell you, when you were young, you dressed yourself, and walked where you wanted to. But when you are old, you will stretch out your hands, and another will dress you, and carry you where you don’t want to go.”

19 Now he said this, signifying by what kind of death he would glorify God. When he had said this, he said to him, “Follow me.”

20 Then Peter, turning around, saw a disciple following. This was the disciple whom Jesus loved, the one who had also leaned on Jesus’ breast at the supper and asked, “Lord, who is going to betray You?”

21 Peter seeing him, said to Jesus, “Lord, what about this man?”

22 Jesus said to him, “If I desire that he stay until I come, what is that to you? You follow me.”

23 This saying therefore went out among the brothers, that this disciple wouldn’t die. Yet Jesus didn’t say to him that he wouldn’t die, but, “If I desire that he stay until I come, what is that to you?”

John 1

John the Baptist says Jesus must be made manifest to Israel, he came baptizing in water for this reason

1 In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God.

2 The same was in the beginning with God.

3 All things were made through him. Without him was not anything made that has been made.

4 In him was life, and the life was the light of men.

5 The light shines in the darkness, and the darkness hasn’t overcome it.

6 There came a man, sent from God, whose name was John.

7 The same came as a witness, that he might testify about the light, that all might believe through him.

8 He was not the light, but was sent that he might testify about the light.

9 The true light that enlightens everyone was coming into the world.

10 He was in the world, and the world was made through him, and the world didn’t recognize him.

11 He came to his own, and those who were his own didn’t receive him.

12 But as many as received him, to them he gave the right to become God’s children, to those who believe in his name:

13 who were born not of blood, nor of the will of the flesh, nor of the will of man, but of God.

14 The Word became flesh, and lived among us. We saw his glory, such glory as of the one and only Son of the Father, full of grace and truth.

15 John testified about him. He cried out, saying, “This was he of whom I said, ‘He who comes after me has surpassed me, for he was before me.’”

16 From his fullness we all received grace upon grace.

17 For the law was given through Moses. Grace and truth were realized through Jesus Christ.

18 No one has seen God at any time. The one and only Son, who is in the bosom of the Father, he has declared him.

19 This is John’s testimony, when the Jews sent priests and Levites from Jerusalem to ask him, “Who are you?”

20 He declared, and didn’t deny, but he declared, “I am not the Christ.”

21 They asked him, “What then? Are you Elijah?” He said, “I am not.” “Are you the prophet?” He answered, “No.”

22 They said therefore to him, “Who are you? Give us an answer to take back to those who sent us. What do you say about yourself?”

23 He said, “I am the voice of one crying in the wilderness, ‘Make straight the way of the Lord,’ as Isaiah the prophet said.”

24 The ones who had been sent were from the Pharisees.

25 They asked him, “Why then do you baptize, if you are not the Christ, nor Elijah, nor the prophet?”

26 John answered them, “I baptize in water, but among you stands one whom you don’t know.

27 He is the one who comes after me, who is preferred before me, whose sandal strap I’m not worthy to loosen.”

28 These things were done in Bethany beyond the Jordan, where John was baptizing.

29 The next day, he saw Jesus coming to him, and said, “Behold, the Lamb of God, who takes away the sin of the world!

30 This is he of whom I said, ‘After me comes a man who is preferred before me, for he was before me.’

31 I didn’t know him, but for this reason I came baptizing in water: that he would be revealed to Israel.”

32 John testified, saying, “I have seen the Spirit descending like a dove out of heaven, and it remained on him.

33 I didn’t recognize him, but he who sent me to baptize in water, he said to me, ‘On whomever you will see the Spirit descending, and remaining on him, the same is he who baptizes in the Holy Spirit.’

34 I have seen, and have testified that this is the Son of God.”

35 Again, the next day, John was standing with two of his disciples,

36 and he looked at Jesus as he walked, and said, “Behold, the Lamb of God!”

37 The two disciples heard him speak, and they followed Jesus.

38 Jesus turned, and saw them following, and said to them, “What are you looking for?” They said to him, “Rabbi” (which is to say, being interpreted, Teacher), “where are you staying?”

39 He said to them, “Come, and see.” They came and saw where he was staying, and they stayed with him that day. It was about the tenth hour.

40 One of the two who heard John, and followed him, was Andrew, Simon Peter’s brother.

41 He first found his own brother, Simon, and said to him, “We have found the Messiah!” (which is, being interpreted, Christ).

42 He brought him to Jesus. Jesus looked at him, and said, “You are Simon the son of Jonah. You shall be called Cephas” (which is by interpretation, Peter).

43 On the next day, he was determined to go out into Galilee, and he found Philip. Jesus said to him, “Follow me.”

44 Now Philip was from Bethsaida, of the city of Andrew and Peter.

45 Philip found Nathanael, and said to him, “We have found him, of whom Moses in the law, and the prophets, wrote: Jesus of Nazareth, the son of Joseph.”

46 Nathanael said to him, “Can any good thing come out of Nazareth?” Philip said to him, “Come and see.”

47 Jesus saw Nathanael coming to him, and said about him, “Behold, an Israelite indeed, in whom is no deceit!”

48 Nathanael said to him, “How do you know me?” Jesus answered him, “Before Philip called you, when you were under the fig tree, I saw you.”

49 Nathanael answered him, “Rabbi, you are the Son of God! You are King of Israel!”

50 Jesus answered him, “Because I told you, ‘I saw you underneath the fig tree,’ do you believe? You will see greater things than these!”

51 He said to him, “Most certainly, I tell you all, hereafter you will see heaven opened, and the angels of God ascending and descending on the Son of Man.”

John 2

beginning of signs at Cana, Jesus manifested his glory to his disciples

1 The third day, there was a marriage in Cana of Galilee. Jesus’ mother was there.

2 Jesus also was invited, with his disciples, to the marriage.

3 When the wine ran out, Jesus’ mother said to him, “They have no wine.”

4 Jesus said to her, “Woman, what does that have to do with you and me? My hour has not yet come.”

5 His mother said to the servants, “Whatever he says to you, do it.”

6 Now there were six water pots of stone set there after the Jews’ way of purifying, containing two or three metretes apiece.

7 Jesus said to them, “Fill the water pots with water.” They filled them up to the brim.

8 He said to them, “Now draw some out, and take it to the ruler of the feast.” So they took it.

9 When the ruler of the feast tasted the water now become wine, and didn’t know where it came from (but the servants who had drawn the water knew), the ruler of the feast called the bridegroom,

10 and said to him, “Everyone serves the good wine first, and when the guests have drunk freely, then that which is worse. You have kept the good wine until now!”

11 This beginning of his signs Jesus did in Cana of Galilee, and revealed his glory; and his disciples believed in him.

12 After this, he went down to Capernaum, he, and his mother, his brothers, and his disciples; and they stayed there a few days.

13 The Passover of the Jews was at hand, and Jesus went up to Jerusalem.

14 He found in the temple those who sold oxen, sheep, and doves, and the changers of money sitting.

15 He made a whip of cords, and threw all out of the temple, both the sheep and the oxen; and he poured out the changers’ money, and overthrew their tables.

16 To those who sold the doves, he said, “Take these things out of here! Don’t make my Father’s house a marketplace!”

17 His disciples remembered that it was written, “Zeal for your house will eat me up.”

18 The Jews therefore answered him, “What sign do you show us, seeing that you do these things?”

19 Jesus answered them, “Destroy this temple, and in three days I will raise it up.”

20 The Jews therefore said, “It took forty-six years to build this temple! Will you raise it up in three days?”

21 But he spoke of the temple of his body.

22 When therefore he was raised from the dead, his disciples remembered that he said this, and they believed the Scripture, and the word which Jesus had said.

23 Now when he was in Jerusalem at the Passover, during the feast, many believed in his name, observing his signs which he did.

24 But Jesus didn’t entrust himself to them, because he knew everyone,

25 and because he didn’t need for anyone to testify concerning man; for he himself knew what was in man.

he who practices truth comes to the light so his deeds may be made manifest as wrought by God

1 Now there was a man of the Pharisees named Nicodemus, a ruler of the Jews.

2 The same came to him by night, and said to him, “Rabbi, we know that you are a teacher come from God, for no one can do these signs that you do, unless God is with him.”

3 Jesus answered him, “Most certainly, I tell you, unless one is born anew, he can’t see God’s Kingdom.”

4 Nicodemus said to him, “How can a man be born when he is old? Can he enter a second time into his mother’s womb, and be born?”

5 Jesus answered, “Most certainly I tell you, unless one is born of water and spirit, he can’t enter into God’s Kingdom.

6 That which is born of the flesh is flesh. That which is born of the Spirit is spirit.

7 Don’t marvel that I said to you, ‘You must be born anew.’

8 The wind blows where it wants to, and you hear its sound, but don’t know where it comes from and where it is going. So is everyone who is born of the Spirit.”

9 Nicodemus answered him, “How can these things be?”

10 Jesus answered him, “Are you the teacher of Israel, and don’t understand these things?

11 Most certainly I tell you, we speak that which we know, and testify of that which we have seen, and you don’t receive our witness.

12 If I told you earthly things and you don’t believe, how will you believe if I tell you heavenly things?

13 No one has ascended into heaven, but he who descended out of heaven, the Son of Man, who is in heaven.

14 As Moses lifted up the serpent in the wilderness, even so must the Son of Man be lifted up,

15 that whoever believes in him should not perish, but have eternal life.

16 For God so loved the world, that he gave his one and only Son, that whoever believes in him should not perish, but have eternal life.

17 For God didn’t send his Son into the world to judge the world, but that the world should be saved through him.

18 He who believes in him is not judged. He who doesn’t believe has been judged already, because he has not believed in the name of the one and only Son of God.

19 This is the judgment, that the light has come into the world, and men loved the darkness rather than the light; for their works were evil.

20 For everyone who does evil hates the light, and doesn’t come to the light, lest his works would be exposed.

21 But he who does the truth comes to the light, that his works may be revealed, that they have been done in God.”

22 After these things, Jesus came with his disciples into the land of Judea. He stayed there with them, and baptized.

23 John also was baptizing in Enon near Salim, because there was much water there. They came, and were baptized.

24 For John was not yet thrown into prison.

25 There arose therefore a questioning on the part of John’s disciples with some Jews about purification.

26 They came to John, and said to him, “Rabbi, he who was with you beyond the Jordan, to whom you have testified, behold, the same baptizes, and everyone is coming to him.”

27 John answered, “A man can receive nothing, unless it has been given him from heaven.

28 You yourselves testify that I said, ‘I am not the Christ,’ but, ‘I have been sent before him.’

29 He who has the bride is the bridegroom; but the friend of the bridegroom, who stands and hears him, rejoices greatly because of the bridegroom’s voice. This, my joy, therefore is made full.

30 He must increase, but I must decrease.

31 He who comes from above is above all. He who is from the earth belongs to the earth, and speaks of the earth. He who comes from heaven is above all.

32 What he has seen and heard, of that he testifies; and no one receives his witness.

33 He who has received his witness has set his seal to this, that God is true.

34 For he whom God has sent speaks the words of God; for God gives the Spirit without measure.

35 The Father loves the Son, and has given all things into his hand.

36 One who believes in the Son has eternal life, but one who disobeys the Son won’t see life, but the wrath of God remains on him.”

John 7

Jesus brother tells him to show himself publicly at the festival in Jerusalem

1 After these things, Jesus was walking in Galilee, for he wouldn’t walk in Judea, because the Jews sought to kill him.

2 Now the feast of the Jews, the Feast of Booths, was at hand.

3 His brothers therefore said to him, “Depart from here, and go into Judea, that your disciples also may see your works which you do.

4 For no one does anything in secret, and himself seeks to be known openly. If you do these things, reveal yourself to the world.”

5 For even his brothers didn’t believe in him.

6 Jesus therefore said to them, “My time has not yet come, but your time is always ready.

7 The world can’t hate you, but it hates me, because I testify about it, that its works are evil.

8 You go up to the feast. I am not yet going up to this feast, because my time is not yet fulfilled.”

9 Having said these things to them, he stayed in Galilee.

10 But when his brothers had gone up to the feast, then he also went up, not publicly, but as it were in secret.

11 The Jews therefore sought him at the feast, and said, “Where is he?”

12 There was much murmuring among the multitudes concerning him. Some said, “He is a good man.” Others said, “Not so, but he leads the multitude astray.”

13 Yet no one spoke openly of him for fear of the Jews.

14 But when it was now the middle of the feast, Jesus went up into the temple and taught.

15 The Jews therefore marveled, saying, “How does this man know letters, having never been educated?”

16 Jesus therefore answered them, “My teaching is not mine, but his who sent me.

17 If anyone desires to do his will, he will know about the teaching, whether it is from God, or if I am speaking from myself.

18 He who speaks from himself seeks his own glory, but he who seeks the glory of him who sent him is true, and no unrighteousness is in him.

19 Didn’t Moses give you the law, and yet none of you keeps the law? Why do you seek to kill me?”

20 The multitude answered, “You have a demon! Who seeks to kill you?”

21 Jesus answered them, “I did one work, and you all marvel because of it.

22 Moses has given you circumcision (not that it is of Moses, but of the fathers), and on the Sabbath you circumcise a boy.

23 If a boy receives circumcision on the Sabbath, that the law of Moses may not be broken, are you angry with me, because I made a man completely healthy on the Sabbath?

24 Don’t judge according to appearance, but judge righteous judgment.”

25 Therefore some of them of Jerusalem said, “Isn’t this he whom they seek to kill?

26 Behold, he speaks openly, and they say nothing to him. Can it be that the rulers indeed know that this is truly the Christ?

27 However we know where this man comes from, but when the Christ comes, no one will know where he comes from.”

28 Jesus therefore cried out in the temple, teaching and saying, “You both know me, and know where I am from. I have not come of myself, but he who sent me is true, whom you don’t know.

29 I know him, because I am from him, and he sent me.”

30 They sought therefore to take him; but no one laid a hand on him, because his hour had not yet come.

31 But of the multitude, many believed in him. They said, “When the Christ comes, he won’t do more signs than those which this man has done, will he?”

32 The Pharisees heard the multitude murmuring these things concerning him, and the chief priests and the Pharisees sent officers to arrest him.

33 Then Jesus said, “I will be with you a little while longer, then I go to him who sent me.

34 You will seek me, and won’t find me; and where I am, you can’t come.”

35 The Jews therefore said among themselves, “Where will this man go that we won’t find him? Will he go to the Dispersion among the Greeks, and teach the Greeks?

36 What is this word that he said, ‘You will seek me, and won’t find me; and where I am, you can’t come’?”

37 Now on the last and greatest day of the feast, Jesus stood and cried out, “If anyone is thirsty, let him come to me and drink!

38 He who believes in me, as the Scripture has said, from within him will flow rivers of living water.”

39 But he said this about the Spirit, which those believing in him were to receive. For the Holy Spirit was not yet given, because Jesus wasn’t yet glorified.

40 Many of the multitude therefore, when they heard these words, said, “This is truly the prophet.”

41 Others said, “This is the Christ.” But some said, “What, does the Christ come out of Galilee?

42 Hasn’t the Scripture said that the Christ comes of the offspring of David, and from Bethlehem, the village where David was?”

43 So there arose a division in the multitude because of him.

44 Some of them would have arrested him, but no one laid hands on him.

45 The officers therefore came to the chief priests and Pharisees, and they said to them, “Why didn’t you bring him?”

46 The officers answered, “No man ever spoke like this man!”

47 The Pharisees therefore answered them, “You aren’t also led astray, are you?

48 Have any of the rulers believed in him, or of the Pharisees?

49 But this multitude that doesn’t know the law is accursed.”

50 Nicodemus (he who came to him by night, being one of them) said to them,

51 “Does our law judge a man, unless it first hears from him personally and knows what he does?”

52 They answered him, “Are you also from Galilee? Search, and see that no prophet has arisen out of Galilee.”

53 Everyone went to his own house,

blind man healed so the works of God might be made manifest in him

1 As he passed by, he saw a man blind from birth.

2 His disciples asked him, “Rabbi, who sinned, this man or his parents, that he was born blind?”

3 Jesus answered, “Neither did this man sin, nor his parents; but, that the works of God might be revealed in him.

4 I must work the works of him who sent me, while it is day. The night is coming, when no one can work.

5 While I am in the world, I am the light of the world.”

6 When he had said this, he spat on the ground, made mud with the saliva, anointed the blind man’s eyes with the mud,

7 and said to him, “Go, wash in the pool of Siloam” (which means “Sent”). So he went away, washed, and came back seeing.

8 The neighbors therefore, and those who saw that he was blind before, said, “Isn’t this he who sat and begged?”

9 Others were saying, “It is he.” Still others were saying, “He looks like him.” He said, “I am he.”

10 They therefore were asking him, “How were your eyes opened?”

11 He answered, “A man called Jesus made mud, anointed my eyes, and said to me, ‘Go to the pool of Siloam, and wash.’ So I went away and washed, and I received sight.”

12 Then they asked him, “Where is he?” He said, “I don’t know.”

13 They brought him who had been blind to the Pharisees.

14 It was a Sabbath when Jesus made the mud and opened his eyes.

15 Again therefore the Pharisees also asked him how he received his sight. He said to them, “He put mud on my eyes, I washed, and I see.”

16 Some therefore of the Pharisees said, “This man is not from God, because he doesn’t keep the Sabbath.” Others said, “How can a man who is a sinner do such signs?” There was division among them.

17 Therefore they asked the blind man again, “What do you say about him, because he opened your eyes?” He said, “He is a prophet.”

18 The Jews therefore did not believe concerning him, that he had been blind, and had received his sight, until they called the parents of him who had received his sight,

19 and asked them, “Is this your son, whom you say was born blind? How then does he now see?”

20 His parents answered them, “We know that this is our son, and that he was born blind;

21 but how he now sees, we don’t know; or who opened his eyes, we don’t know. He is of age. Ask him. He will speak for himself.”

22 His parents said these things because they feared the Jews; for the Jews had already agreed that if any man would confess him as Christ, he would be put out of the synagogue.

23 Therefore his parents said, “He is of age. Ask him.”

24 So they called the man who was blind a second time, and said to him, “Give glory to God. We know that this man is a sinner.”

25 He therefore answered, “I don’t know if he is a sinner. One thing I do know: that though I was blind, now I see.”

26 They said to him again, “What did he do to you? How did he open your eyes?”

27 He answered them, “I told you already, and you didn’t listen. Why do you want to hear it again? You don’t also want to become his disciples, do you?”

28 They insulted him and said, “You are his disciple, but we are disciples of Moses.

29 We know that God has spoken to Moses. But as for this man, we don’t know where he comes from.”

30 The man answered them, “How amazing! You don’t know where he comes from, yet he opened my eyes.

31 We know that God doesn’t listen to sinners, but if anyone is a worshiper of God, and does his will, he listens to him.

32 Since the world began it has never been heard of that anyone opened the eyes of someone born blind.

33 If this man were not from God, he could do nothing.”

34 They answered him, “You were altogether born in sins, and do you teach us?” They threw him out.

35 Jesus heard that they had thrown him out, and finding him, he said, “Do you believe in the Son of God?”

36 He answered, “Who is he, Lord, that I may believe in him?”

37 Jesus said to him, “You have both seen him, and it is he who speaks with you.”

38 He said, “Lord, I believe!” and he worshiped him.

39 Jesus said, “I came into this world for judgment, that those who don’t see may see; and that those who see may become blind.”

40 Those of the Pharisees who were with him heard these things, and said to him, “Are we also blind?”

41 Jesus said to them, “If you were blind, you would have no sin; but now you say, ‘We see.’ Therefore your sin remains.

John 17

Jesus prays to the Father: I have manifested your name to those you gave me

1 Jesus said these things, and lifting up his eyes to heaven, he said, “Father, the time has come. Glorify your Son, that your Son may also glorify you;

2 even as you gave him authority over all flesh, so he will give eternal life to all whom you have given him.

3 This is eternal life, that they should know you, the only true God, and him whom you sent, Jesus Christ.

4 I glorified you on the earth. I have accomplished the work which you have given me to do.

5 Now, Father, glorify me with your own self with the glory which I had with you before the world existed.

6 I revealed your name to the people whom you have given me out of the world. They were yours, and you have given them to me. They have kept your word.

7 Now they have known that all things whatever you have given me are from you,

8 for the words which you have given me I have given to them, and they received them, and knew for sure that I came from you, and they have believed that you sent me.

9 I pray for them. I don’t pray for the world, but for those whom you have given me, for they are yours.

10 All things that are mine are yours, and yours are mine, and I am glorified in them.

11 I am no more in the world, but these are in the world, and I am coming to you. Holy Father, keep them through your name which you have given me, that they may be one, even as we are.

12 While I was with them in the world, I kept them in your name. Those whom you have given me I have kept. None of them is lost, except the son of destruction, that the Scripture might be fulfilled.

13 But now I come to you, and I say these things in the world, that they may have my joy made full in themselves.

14 I have given them your word. The world hated them, because they are not of the world, even as I am not of the world.

15 I pray not that you would take them from the world, but that you would keep them from the evil one.

16 They are not of the world even as I am not of the world.

17 Sanctify them in your truth. Your word is truth.

18 As you sent me into the world, even so I have sent them into the world.

19 For their sakes I sanctify myself, that they themselves also may be sanctified in truth.

20 Not for these only do I pray, but for those also who will believe in me through their word,

21 that they may all be one; even as you, Father, are in me, and I in you, that they also may be one in us; that the world may believe that you sent me.

22 The glory which you have given me, I have given to them; that they may be one, even as we are one;

23 I in them, and you in me, that they may be perfected into one; that the world may know that you sent me, and loved them, even as you loved me.

24 Father, I desire that they also whom you have given me be with me where I am, that they may see my glory, which you have given me, for you loved me before the foundation of the world.

25 Righteous Father, the world hasn’t known you, but I knew you; and these knew that you sent me.

26 I made known to them your name, and will make it known; that the love with which you loved me may be in them, and I in them.”

23 For I received from the Lord that which also I delivered to you, that the Lord Jesus on the night in which he was betrayed took bread.

24 When he had given thanks, he broke it, and said, “Take, eat. This is my body, which is broken for you. Do this in memory of me.”

Recap

The message in order, in a few minutes of reading.

Pastor Mark opened the final chapter of John with a chapter that functions not as conclusion but as action step, asking what we are supposed to do with everything the Gospel has just shown us. Working through John 21 in order, he traced four movements: manifestation, invitation, motivation, and occupation, all of them folding back on each other and pointing forward into how we actually follow Jesus.

What was said

The Gospel of John ends with a purpose statement in chapter 20, so chapter 21 could easily feel like an afterthought. Pastor Mark argued it is not. John is a symmetrical book, opening with a prologue and closing with an epilogue, and this epilogue is the "so what" the whole gospel has been building toward. It answers the question of what believing actually looks like when you walk out the door.

Before getting into the text, Pastor Mark paused on the word "ichthus," the Greek word for fish, and what it stands for. Each letter corresponds to a word: Jesus, Christ, son of God, savior. That symbol on the back of a car is not just a piece of Christian culture. It is a compressed declaration of everything the Gospel of John has been arguing.

The first movement in the chapter is manifestation. Jesus shows himself to the disciples at the Sea of Tiberias, and the word John uses means to make visible or known what has been hidden. Pastor Mark traced that word through the gospel and noted it appears like brackets around the whole book. Just as Jesus made the unseen God known and real, the same task falls to those who follow him, making Jesus plain and actual to the people around them.

The second movement is invitation. Jesus has already prepared a charcoal fire with fish and bread when the disciples come ashore. Pastor Mark pointed out that the charcoal fire is the only other one mentioned in the New Testament, the fire Peter was standing near when he denied Christ. Jesus feeds them and then says "come and dine." When Jesus takes the bread and gives it to them, Pastor Mark connected that gesture directly to communion, and made the point that Jesus intended every shared meal to carry that remembrance, not just a formal church observance.

The third and fourth movements are motivation and occupation, and they belong together. Jesus asks Peter three times whether he loves him, once for each denial, and each time pairs the answer with a command to feed or tend the sheep. Peter's occupation, caring for others, flows from his motivation, love for Christ. Pastor Mark was clear that the love being talked about is first a love for Jesus, and that love for Christ is what should drive any concern we have for the people around us.

The final word Jesus speaks to Peter is "follow me," the same thing he said at the very beginning. Peter immediately looks over at John and asks what John's assignment is going to be. Jesus' answer is direct: that is not your concern. You follow me. Pastor Mark said he does not think that answer was only for Peter. The expectation Jesus sets is that each person keeps their eyes on what he is asking them to do rather than comparing their path to anyone else's. The epilogue closes with John's church community vouching for his testimony, and with the observation that the world could not contain all the books that could be written about what Jesus did.

Doing a Bible study?

Here is a guide we have prepared for you: the passages in order, questions for the group, and room to write.

  1. The pastor opened with the story of his first date with Tanya and said 'beginnings tend to set a tone.' What beginning in your own life with Christ has shaped the direction of your faith since then?
  2. The sermon described manifestation as making known what has been hidden, and said the seminary motto was 'to know him and make him known.' In practical terms, what does it look like for you to make Jesus known to the people around you right now?

0:01 Good morning. Good morning. Alright. I've got a couple of of slides this morning that are gonna be weird. We're gonna be in John 20 '1, but Mark, would you mind swapping over that picture I gave you just a little bit ago?
0:21 Those two skinny people are telling me from twenty one years ago. Twenty one years ago last month actually almost to the day, that was our first date and we just so happened we met in photography class so we happened to have black and white film and a black and white camera. We didn't meet in black and white but we did have black and white camera with us and we went the first time we went anywhere. It's interesting how beginnings tend to set a tone. We went because we were asked by a professor of mine, he sent us, he sent me with her actually, he found out she was doing pictures of homeless people and she was trying to help the situation, socially relevant statement about the homeless and trying to help and she was doing it by herself and he said you need somebody to help you do that and protect you so he sent me with it.
1:14 So I went with it and we went that day, we have been a couple of different times just in that role but we went down to the Dillingham Street Bridge in Columbus Georgia and there were no homeless people at home. They really weren't there and that's where they stayed. And so we rode over in the Phoenix City, Alabama and there were no homeless people to be found in their regular homes in Phoenix City, Alabama. We're not sure what. 1992 was March.
1:40 And so we decided we'll just keep going. We were enjoying each other's company and we rode up down to Eupaula, Alabama about 50 miles further down the road and there were none in the nice homes of Eupaula or any of the surrounding areas and we were halfway by that point, almost halfway to Panama City Beach. So we just kept rolling and that is completely whited out because we were in photography class and I didn't put the fixer on it like I should have. But behind us is the ocean I know that I can smell it I can look at that picture and smell it I know exactly where I was. When we were in Dublin, Alabama on the way down there, Tanya said, oh we could go to Panama City.
2:18 Actually, Destin. She Destin's a little snoorier than Panama City. I had spent the summer before in Panama City. Tanya had spent the summer before in Seaside Florida. And she said, oh, we could get a cracker roll.
2:28 She started getting this taste too. And so we went down and we had a sandwich. We stood there on the beach and we clicked the timer and I ran around and stood beside her. It's our first date. Yeah.
2:42 I knew her to be generous and caring about other people and interesting and I loved her. At this point, I had not told her, but I loved But that kind of set a tone. It was a spontaneous thing. We turned around right from there after we ate the sandwich and we drove back. It's four and a half hours there.
3:00 We turned around and drove four and a half hours back home. She went to her mom and dad's house and I went to mine. But it was, that's the beginning and like I said, y'all can't even see it right there. You can't see anything but white behind us but I know that the ocean was right back there and I can smell and it brings it back. There are certain sensory things I can see that and all those things come back to me and my heart's filled with love by the way too which is great but you can switch back over to the slides now.
3:32 John 21 if you look at the headings and like a New King James Bible it'll say breakfast on the beach, the restoration of Peter and something like the beloved disciple in his book. Y'all know we've been studying this now for a long time. John 21 is the last chapter. You would think it would be over by now. After last week, the last thing that he said was these things have been written so that you may believe that Jesus is the Christ and believing have life in his name.
3:59 So he's already given us the purpose. Why would he give us the epilogue? The epilogue John's a very symmetrical book. It starts off with a prologue and it ends with an epilogue. I told you it's like the first week of his ministry is given great priority, the gathering of the disciples, And then the last week, the passion week, I have a professor that always said that the gospels are all passion narratives with long introductions.
4:26 And John is no different than the others in that sense. One more thing before we get going, because of the breakfast on the beach and because of the catch of fish that we'll get to in a minute, this is a fishy chapter not because it's furious or we don't think that it is for real but a lot of people read that purpose statement and think why would he add this on? So some people think it's kind of fishy and that reminded me of this. One of the things reminded me of this, there's tractor. If you haven't noticed, the tractor comes all over down in Jackson.
4:52 Dave Kaufman is working on that project and people riding by, riding by, riding by. There's one guy who sits out there and his job is just to note what's going on, make sure the barrels get back in place and I was talking to the guy, not that guy that does this job, another friend of ours that does this job. And he said some of the worst drivers on the road have this simple on the back of their car. And he said they drive like they expect God to take really good care of because they're driving like crazy people. Do you all know what this Jesus fish means or where we get it from?
5:26 Some of you probably do, some might not. The Jesus fish. The word bitch in Greek is icthus. That's the transliteration, I c h t h u s. In English, it's echthus.
5:40 Normally, when you see it in the New Testament, every time that you see it, it's like that second. That's the lowercase symbols, e o, ki or ki, theta, opsilon, sigma. And then the other is uppercase. Now you don't see a whole lot of Greek written in uppercase unless it's on a sweatshirt. When you see Greek written it's usually in lowercase but the reason that this one is often written in capital letters and sometimes you'll see this fish and it has that in the in the body of the fish, it'll say Ephesus.
6:09 That's a there's a reason for that. It means that Yoda means Jesus, which means Jesus. The chi or chi means Christos, which is Christ. The theu, it's not theos' God, but theu is algod. It's a genitive, possessive genitive for those grammar nerds.
6:32 We us, Upsilon, the other, omicron, sigma is son. So Jesus Christ, son of God. And then the last sigma is for soter, which is savior. You ever heard of soteriology? It is the study of salvation.
6:49 So the Jesus fish is not just a symbol of solidarity among Christian right wing conservatives. It's not just for bad drivers. What it means when you look at that symbol, what it means is Jesus Christ, son of God and savior. It's a declaration. Jesus Christ, son of God and savior.
7:06 Now there are lots of legends about how when they were under extreme persecutions in Rome, one Christian could walk up and draw an ark on the ground and kind of stand back from it and wait for somebody else to come along and complete the little fish. And if he did, he knew he had a Christian brother and they could meet at that time probably in secret so that they would not be killed. But tons of tons of legends spring up, but this one there's no doubt about it. The reason that we have an ichthus is because it means Jesus Christ son, God, savior. So the word fish in Greek, ichus, stands for that.
7:40 That's why it came to be attached. Also, this chapter and many other chapters in, the New Testament have something to do with fish. What were the disciples? A bunch of fishermen. What was he always talking about?
7:52 Fishing for men. When Peter need to pay his taxes, what did Jesus do? Go catch a fish. He catches a fish with a corn in his mouth. Fish are all over this testament.
8:02 Well, you could have gotten that from a seminary education, first semester seminary class on Greek or you could have just gotten by reading this guy's t shirt. Finishing up, we have covered everything in yellow up there. The prologue, period of consideration where John presents evidence, a period of controversy where there is a growing resistance If you have controversy, eventually it will come to conflict and a death and they outright the chief priests and scribes and the barristers outright became so angry that they wanted to pursue Jesus and this became a crisis. And at the point of crisis when everything was coming to a head, John takes four chapters to tell us about this period of conferences. Jesus' period of conference with his disciples, tell him what life is gonna be like when he's not around physically anymore.
8:54 He also has a period of conference with his father where he prays for us. I have prayed for you that God will sanctify you by his truth. And then there's the period of consummation which we see as the darkest tragedy in the Bible that becomes the greatest triumph. So this is the time of the cross, the betrayal, arrest, trials, death, burial, and resurrection. That's the period of consummation and then it ends up with John's purpose statement which I've already mentioned.
9:24 But the epilogue has four main things to consider and I'm going to go over this whole chapter today. I want to look at it in order. Four main things I think that the verses show, no doubt about it, And then hopefully you'll see that it cycles back around upon us. This is, you know how sometimes when people are preaching they they expound on the word and what it means and then when they get to the end it says, so what? This is the action step that you should take away.
9:49 John 21 is an action step. It is the it is the gospel of John has been preached. It is the gospel of belief so that believing you may have life in Jesus name. But the epilogue is okay, so what I do with it? First of all, Jesus' manifestation verses one through eight in chapter 21 say, After these things Jesus showed himself again to the disciples at the Sea Of Tiberias, that's the Sea Of Galilee.
10:16 And in this way he showed himself, he manifested himself, the word right there for show is manifested. Simon Peter, Thomas called Didymus, Nathaniel, Canaan, and Galilee sons of Zebedee and two others of his disciples were together. Did you notice that that list looks almost exactly like the list at the very beginning of this chapter of those people who picked up the first week? It's almost exactly the same list. Simon Peter said to them to the other guys there, I'm going fishing.
10:50 Which is great, he's a fisherman but this is after the resurrected Lord has come to him. Some people read again well he's going back and sinful, he's turning away. No, He's going fishing. They're probably hungry. So going fishing.
11:05 And they said to him, we're going with him. They went out and immediately got into the boat and that night they caught nothing. But when the morning had now come, Jesus stood on the shore, yet the disciples did not know it was Jesus. Then Jesus yelled to them or said to them, children, boys, guys, fellas, have you any food? And they answered him, no.
11:27 And he said to them, cast the net on the right side of the boat and you will find some. So they cast and now they were able to draw it in. They were not able to draw it in because of the multitude of fish. Therefore, that disciple whom Jesus loved said to Peter, it is the Lord. Now when Simon Peter heard that it was the Lord, he put on his outer garment before he removed it and plunged into the sea, but the other disciples came in the little boat for they were not that far from land but about 200 cubits dragging the net with fish.
12:01 Then oh, let me stop right there. So you see what's going on. They're fishing, not catching anything. Is this the first time this has happened? No.
12:10 When Jesus calls out to him, if you remember when I was talking about timing out, the things you see at the beginning are the things that you still see. That's that's the way that this kind of whole chapter goes. There are linkages to the past throughout this chapter and those linkages point you towards your future too. So he manifested himself. The word here means to make manifest or visible or known that which has been hidden or unknown to manifest, I keep saying, what if our words or deeds or any other way make actual or visible, realize to make known by teaching, to be made known.
12:50 When we talk in the very first sermon, the prologue, said it was this big deal. The transcendent God has become imminent in the person of Jesus Christ. He made real that which was ethereal and above us and out of our scope of understanding. Jesus made that real. He made it known.
13:12 If you have ever been a trucker or a sea captain, probably not as likely the sea captain thing, but if you've ever been a trucker, do you know what a manifest is? There's a list of everything on that truck. If you've got a barge and you're sailing out in Mississippi and somebody pulls you over and ask you what you have on board, you should, you better have a manifest and that makes plain and clear the bundles and bundles of stuff that you have on board. It makes it known. The seminary that I went to, our motto is to know him and make him known.
13:41 It is both. It's to know Jesus personally, yes, but it's also to make him real to other people, to make him known. That's what Jesus did for God. That's what we as Christians are to do for God is to make Jesus known. So find it out and I'll read something here.
13:56 Every time this is interesting too. I'm not one I've to several of Doctor. Shea's sermons online and listened to several of them on the tapes and he's great. He's fantastic. He counts everything.
14:09 My goodness. That word's used 25 times and so this week I've got a couple of those where I've brought those out. In the Gospel of John, this is used eight times. It's used two times in this chapter and it's like brackets. He's saying he made manifest.
14:25 He showed it to be plain. He made it really, really super clear. He says that twice in this chapter and I think he's pointing back. If you'll just listen quickly to the other times in the first chapter, John the Baptist says about Jesus, at first I did not recognize him but so that he might be made manifest, made obvious to Israel, I came baptized him in water. The beginning of His signs Jesus did in Cana Of Galilee at the wedding and manifested His glory to His disciples.
14:52 He made His glory known to His disciples. The chapter three, but he who practices the truth comes to the light so that his deeds may be made manifest as having been wrought by God. For no one does anything in secret when he himself seeks to be known publicly. This is Jesus' brother who's telling me needs to go up to festival in Jerusalem and he says if you do these things show yourself, make yourself plain. They thought Jesus was being sneaky.
15:23 Jesus answered it was neither that this man sinned nor his parents. Do you remember the blind man that Jesus healed? What did he say? He said, but so that the works of God might be made manifest, find a rapport in him. And then this chapter says he has made I have made I have manifested your name chapter 17, I'm sorry, when he's praying, he's praying to God the Father and he says, I have made clear, I have made manifest your name to all of those who you give me.
15:53 Does this make sense? So manifestation is a part of this. It's not just this theopony, It's not this kind of a thing where God presents himself as something else. No. He's presenting himself as a man.
16:08 So Jesus' manifestation is very important. He is making clear the unseen and unknown God. Jesus had an invitation verses nine through 14. Then as soon as they had come to land, they saw a fire of coals there, a charcoal fire there, and fish lay on it and bread. So he already had the fish there and bread.
16:39 Jesus said to them, bring some of the fish which you have just caught. Simon Peter went up and dragged them at the land full of large fish, 153 and although there were so many, the net was not broken. Jesus said to them, come and dine, come and eat breakfast. Yet none of the disciples dared ask him, who are you knowing that it was the Lord? Jesus came and took the bread and gave it to them, likewise the fish.
17:04 This is now the third time that Jesus made manifest himself to his disciples after he was raised from the dead. His invitation was come and dine. There are just a few things about that that I want to bring out. For one thing, he was sitting there by a charcoal fire. When's the only time we read of a charcoal fire in the New Testament?
17:27 There's one other time and it hadn't been that long ago. Peter's denials. When Peter denies Christ it says that he was warming himself near a girl near a barrel near up I imagine a barrel. That's my own town. But he was she was warming herself near a charcoal fire and Peter was there when he denied Christ.
17:46 And so for his restoration, the sights, the smells, the charcoal fire pursues you. You sit around a campfire singing songs, you just think like it until you have a couple of good baths. So he's bringing a sensory experience and Jesus is literally providing for them. He had a fish. He didn't eat their fish.
18:10 If they hadn't caught anything, he'd still have had fish and we know what Jesus can do with fish. He could have fed 5,000 fishermen if he wanted to. He's also inviting them to join him. He was on the beach and he was going to eat. He was preparing this.
18:25 Now some people might say, oh, glorified body and all after the resurrection did he mean to? He can pass through locked doors to the eat. And what's up? Luke says that he ate broiled fish to prove to the disciples that he had literally risen from the dead. It is not a subjective experience based on what they're thinking in their mind.
18:45 Jesus really did rise from the dead and really did appear to his disciples over and over again and to 500 others Paul says. So he's inviting them to join him. And I think of this, when I read that verse that says, and Jesus came and took the bread and gave it to them. What does that call back to? Communion.
19:13 We're gonna celebrate communion here in a little while, Lord's Supper. Jesus was literally feeding them for sustenance, but he also had told them that every time you do this, do this in remembrance of me. I think that in the pompous circumstance that that many churches have taken with how we do communion, we've kinda lost the sight that when Jesus was feeding the disciples bread and wine, that's what they ate. And he said, every single time you nourish yourself, do it in remembrance of me. Does that make sense?
19:44 I agree it's a sacrament ordinance, whatever you wanna call it, and it's nice to set it apart, but I think that it's fantastic that he was having communion with his disciples after he had risen. Korean barbecue on a picnic table in the backyard is communion. If those who are celebrating it are Christians, it is communion with our risen lord. And of course, because it's Jesus, it always comes with a teaching session which is great. So far we've got manifestation and invitation.
20:15 Next we have motivation and occupation. These two go hand in hand. I'll go through them rather quickly. We have all heard sermons on this. Everybody who's heard a sermon has heard a sermon on this.
20:26 Jesus says to Peter in verse 15. Let's go ahead and read 15 through 17. 15 says, so when they had eaten breakfast, Jesus said to Simon, Peter, Simon, son of John, do you love me more than these? And he said to him, yes, Lord. You know that I love you.
20:41 And he said to him, Feed my lambs. And he said to him again a second time, Simon, son of Jonah, do you love me? And he said to him, Yes Lord, you know that I love you. He said to him, Tend my sheep. And he said to him a third time, Simon, son of Jonah, do you love me?
20:58 Peter was grieved because he said to him the third time, do you love me? And he said to him, Lord, you know all things. You know that I love you. And Jesus said to him, feed my sheep. So what is Peter's motivation to be here?
21:17 Do you love me? Do you love me? Do you love me? His motivation? Love.
21:23 Jesus is asking that, do you think he was questioning Peter's love for him, really questioning whether or not he did? Just like Peter said, you know me. You know my heart. You know that I love you. Do you think he was questioning it or do you think three times to match Peter's three denials?
21:41 That Jesus forecast ahead of time he'd do three times. So the motivation is to be loved for Jesus Christ. This is why we should be doing whatever it is that he has asked us to do. Now in Peter's case, do you love me? Yes.
21:57 Feed my lambs. Verse 15. Do you love me? Yes. Tend my sheep.
22:03 Verse 16. Do you love me? You know I love you. Then feed my sheep. That's what he tells them to do.
22:11 Peter is the great example of a man who has been humble and then given a great responsibility to shepherd. The very first series I preached here was on first Peter, and it was mainly because it's the most pastoral book in the New Testament to me. He experiences life as a man who has been broken but he has been restored. This is Jesus' public restoration before the other disciples of Peter. So we have Jesus' manifestation, his invitation.
22:45 His motivation plus Peter's occupation motivated by love is to be occupied and concerned for others. But the final expectation, the final expectation that Jesus has is in verses 18 through 23. 18 through 23 says, most assuredly I say to you, now this is Jesus speaking to Peter, when you were younger, you girded yourself and you walked where you wish. But when you're old, you will stretch out your hands and another will gird you and carry you where you do not wish. John adds a little narrator's note here, says this he spoke signifying by what death he would glorify God.
23:36 And when he had spoken this, he said to him, follow me. Then Peter turning around saw the disciple whom Jesus loved following him, who also had leaned on Jesus' breast supper and said, Lord, who who is this one who who betrayed oh, excuse me. So this is the guy. He's describing who John is. The disciple whom Jesus loved who's leaning on Jesus' breast during dinner and said, who is this that betrayed you?
24:05 Talking about Jesus. And Peter seeing him, seeing John said to Jesus, but Lord, what about this man? Doesn't that sound kind of like childish? Jesus has just said, you know, this kind of a cryptic statement about how Peter would die. And then as soon as he gets finished with his cryptic statement about how he died, he said, follow me.
24:29 What's the first thing that Jesus said to Peter in the gospel? Follow me. Drop your nuts and follow me and he did. And so the last word he's saying, follow me. Beginning to have a way of of pointing towards endings.
24:47 And so the final expectation for Peter was to follow me. Now when he said what he said, John writing this knew how Peter died. And tradition tells us it's not a biblical story that Peter was crucified, someone else stretched out his arms for him. But in humility, he did not wanna be crucified in the same manner as Jesus. He requested that he be crucified upside down.
25:10 So following Christ got him the same place that it got Christ. But Jesus' response to him was he says, but Lord, what about this man? Jesus said to him, if I will that he remain till I come back. What is that to you? You follow me.
25:34 And it's very, very emphatic. To follow me in '19, it's just follow me. But you, Peter, you, dude, follow me. You. Don't worry about what everybody else is doing.
25:48 Don't worry about what I've got for them to do. If everybody takes the attitude that we need to follow after Jesus and do exactly what he is telling us to do at the speed he's telling us to do it, then everybody's gonna be better off rather than looking around. You follow me. I don't think that's just the expectation for Peter. I think that's God's expectation of all of us.
26:09 It's just you don't pay attention to whatever anybody else is doing. You just follow me. And so how do we follow Jesus? That's like a that's like the question. If you get to the point where you believe, okay, well, I'm gonna follow after.
26:23 This is what I wanna do with my life. I wanna I wanna follow Jesus. Well, how do you do that? Well, just from this chapter alone, I think it's a cyclical thing. It looks like to me, you manifest him to others.
26:35 You make Jesus claim to other people. How do you do that? He says, let your light shine before men so that they may see your good deeds and glorify your father who's in heaven. So make God and Jesus manifest to others. Make him real to them.
26:49 Invite him to come and die. That's not a bad idea. Meal, music, message on Monday night. So the reason meal is in there, Jesus literally was providing for their needs. He did want for them to join him in what he was doing so that he could have a conversation.
27:03 There's nothing like dinner time around the family supper table. Nothing else replaces that. There's something to it coming down. Motivated by love for Christ. Not necessarily love for the people in front of you to begin with.
27:19 If you don't know him, he's commanded you to love whether you're enemies or not, but your love for Christ is what should motivate this. You should be occupied by a concern for other people. It should not all be about you. It should not all be about me. So this is exactly what Jesus was modeling in this.
27:39 And then the expectation of following Jesus is that eventually we will be where he is. We're saved by grace alone. Don't get me wrong. I'm not trying to say works. I'm not trying to say it's all how many people you feed or how many you teach, anything like that.
27:54 Fully expecting to arrive where Jesus is is what you get when you follow him, when you believe him. You will not follow him unless you believe him. That makes sense. Actions follow belief. It is not the other way around.
28:08 Then the last note about this is the disciple fill up a book, and this is what it says. This is the disciple who testifies of these things and wrote these things. And then this is funny. He kinda has a chorus of the elders of his church chime in, And we know that his testimony is true. I think that's great.
28:24 It signed off on it, wouldn't it? And there are also many other things that Jesus did which is they were written one by one, I suppose that even the world itself could not contain the books that would be written. Amen. What does amen mean? So be it.
28:39 So that's the end of the gospel of John. There is no doubt that he presents Jesus as the son of God. Jesus is the Christ and the son of God. He has said it over and over and over again. But do you believe it?
28:54 The answer to that question makes all the difference in this world and in the next. It makes all of the difference, period. Do you believe that Jesus is the Christ, the son of God? Is he your savior? Can you put the fish on your cock?
29:10 Can you, do you believe that little egg fooch? Do you believe? Jesus Christ us. Son of God, savior. Amy, would you come up?
29:24 We're gonna go into a town. I'm gonna invite you to come and dine. This is an open table, open communion table to anyone who has received Jesus as their savior. If you believe him to be the son of God, if you believe him to be the Lord of your life, he says that he will be. And so I'm gonna ask for the communion team to come forward too and we're gonna just go into a time of communion.
29:49 I do and I went through with seminary professors over and over again about this because I I think that what Jesus was saying was every time that you get together and you ingest anything and you do it in remembrance of me, this is what I'm talking about. So every time we eat, do it. But this is a special time where we together as a family have table fellowship. So if y'all would, you can go ahead and distribute the bread. For I live deliver to you first of all that which I also receive, that Christ died for our sins according to the scripture, that he was buried, that he rose again the third day, according to the scriptures, and that he was seen by Cephas, that's Peter, then by the 12.
33:28 After that, he was seen by over 500 brethren at once of whom the greater part remains in the present, but some fall asleep. God, I pray that you would be with us in a very real way, Lord, every day as we partake of anything you have given, Lord, may remind us of the sacrifice that you've made on our behalf and call us to greater holiness living before you. The Lord that which I delivered also to you, the Lord Jesus. On the same night he was betrayed. When he had given thanks, he broke and said, take.
34:06 This is my body which is broken for you. Do this in remembrance of me. In the same manner, he also took the cup after supper saying that this is the cup. It's the new covenant in my blood. In Revelation, it says that we will overcome or actually it says evil will be overcome and we will overcome By the blood of the lamb and the word of our testimony.
37:57 This cup is a new covenant in Christ's blood. He said this, do as often as you drink of it in remembrance of him. Get get the band to come back up. We're gonna sing one more song. Paul says that as often as we eat this bread and drink this cup and proclaim the Lord's death until he comes.
38:27 We're gonna sing a song called overcome in just a minute, and it is about overcoming by the blood of the lamb, but also by the word of his testimony is how people will be overcome because other people still don't know him. So we need to be making a manifest and inviting him to know him. We need to be motivated by love, occupied by concern for them. And I wanna say one more thing about the Gospel of John because if I were to say this at the beginning or end, I forgot it at the beginning so here it is at the end. This is by one of the best commentaries I've read on the Gospel of John.
38:58 It says opening opening paragraph it says, I like the comparison of John's Gospel to a pool in which a child may wave and an elephant may also swim. It is both simple and profound. It is for the various beginner in the faith and for the mature Christian. Its appeal is immediate and never failing. It is a simple gospel.
39:20 The humblest believer can read it and understand it and profit by it. But there are unplumbed depths in the clarity of the writing. What at first appears plainly obvious is presently seen to pose problems. Most students would agree that after years of close study of this gospel, they don't leave you with a feeling of having mastered it but rather the conviction that it is still strange, restless, and unfamiliar. I would say that if you are someone who has never reached the Bible, read John.
39:48 It's the first place to start. If you're somebody who's been a Christian a long time, read John. It's the great place to be. And if you ever get confused by things centering the focus back on Jesus as the person and work is right where you need to be and that's what John is. I know more than one person that when you ask them how and when they became a Christian they can't make a date but they could say it was somewhere between John three and John four or John six and John seven.
40:11 Have a good friend that says John nine. John nine is where I became a Christian. He doesn't have the date and year doesn't it? But read John and encourage others to do so. Let's sing.
