In one paragraph

Pastor Carl walked through James 1:13-18 on a Wednesday night, finishing up the first chapter of James. The passage deals with where temptation comes from, what it leads to, and what it tells us about who God is. The thread running through the whole message was that God uses trials and temptations, including failed ones, to make us more like Christ. James picks up right where he left off the...

Read together

  1. James 1:13-18 main passage for the sermon, read aloud and expounded throughout
  2. James 1:12 referenced as the verse they ended on last week, about being blessed for patiently enduring testing
  3. 1 Thessalonians quoted to say the will of God is our sanctification, to become more like Jesus
  4. Luke referenced for the account of Jesus telling Simon that Satan asked to sift him like wheat
  5. 1 John 1:9 quoted to say God is faithful and just to forgive our sins and cleanse us from wickedness when we confess
  6. Psalm 51 referenced to say God will not reject a broken and repentant heart
  7. Galatians referenced to explain that believers can yield either to the Spirit or to what the sin nature craves
  8. 1 Peter 4 quoted at the close, telling believers not to be surprised at fiery trials but to be glad, as trials make them partners with Christ in his suffering
  9. Romans 8:28 quoted by a congregation member to say God causes all things to work together for good for those who love Him
  10. Romans 8:29-30 quoted by a congregation member extending the Romans 8:28 thought, about being predestined to be conformed to the image of Christ and the chain from foreknowledge to glorification

Talk about it

  1. Pastor Carl shared the Max Lucado quote that God loves you the way you are but refuses to leave you that way. Where have you seen that at work in your own life?
  2. James is clear that God tests our faith but does not tempt us. When have you been tempted to blame God for a temptation, and what helped you see it differently?
  3. Peter denied Jesus and failed the test, yet Jesus had already prayed for him and later used that failure to strengthen the disciples around him. Have you ever seen God redeem a failure in your own life or someone else's and use it to strengthen others?
  4. Florian shared that the worst part of walking away from God was no longer being able to hear His voice. What habits or practices help you stay close enough to God to keep hearing Him, especially when sin is quietly growing?
  5. Several people reflected on Romans 8:28, and Ray used the image of a sculptor chipping away everything that does not look like the finished design. What does that image stir up for you when you think about the hard circumstances you are in right now?
