Romans 3-5

cited to show that no one is righteous and all start as enemies of God

3:1 Then what advantage does the Jew have? Or what is the profit of circumcision?

3:2 Much in every way! Because first of all, they were entrusted with the revelations of God.

3:3 For what if some were without faith? Will their lack of faith nullify the faithfulness of God?

3:4 May it never be! Yes, let God be found true, but every man a liar. As it is written, “That you might be justified in your words, and might prevail when you come into judgment.”

3:5 But if our unrighteousness commends the righteousness of God, what will we say? Is God unrighteous who inflicts wrath? I speak like men do.

3:6 May it never be! For then how will God judge the world?

3:7 For if the truth of God through my lie abounded to his glory, why am I also still judged as a sinner?

3:8 Why not (as we are slanderously reported, and as some affirm that we say), “Let us do evil, that good may come?” Those who say so are justly condemned.

3:9 What then? Are we better than they? No, in no way. For we previously warned both Jews and Greeks, that they are all under sin.

3:10 As it is written, “There is no one righteous; no, not one.

3:11 There is no one who understands. There is no one who seeks after God.

3:12 They have all turned away. They have together become unprofitable. There is no one who does good, no, not so much as one.”

3:13 “Their throat is an open tomb. With their tongues they have used deceit.” “The poison of vipers is under their lips”;

3:14 “whose mouth is full of cursing and bitterness.”

3:15 “Their feet are swift to shed blood.

3:16 Destruction and misery are in their ways.

3:17 The way of peace, they haven’t known.”

3:18 “There is no fear of God before their eyes.”

3:19 Now we know that whatever things the law says, it speaks to those who are under the law, that every mouth may be closed, and all the world may be brought under the judgment of God.

3:20 Because by the works of the law, no flesh will be justified in his sight. For through the law comes the knowledge of sin.

3:21 But now apart from the law, a righteousness of God has been revealed, being testified by the law and the prophets;

3:22 even the righteousness of God through faith in Jesus Christ to all and on all those who believe. For there is no distinction,

3:23 for all have sinned, and fall short of the glory of God;

3:24 being justified freely by his grace through the redemption that is in Christ Jesus;

3:25 whom God sent to be an atoning sacrifice, through faith in his blood, for a demonstration of his righteousness through the passing over of prior sins, in God’s forbearance;

3:26 to demonstrate his righteousness at this present time; that he might himself be just, and the justifier of him who has faith in Jesus.

3:27 Where then is the boasting? It is excluded. By what kind of law? Of works? No, but by a law of faith.

3:28 We maintain therefore that a man is justified by faith apart from the works of the law.

3:29 Or is God the God of Jews only? Isn’t he the God of Gentiles also? Yes, of Gentiles also,

3:30 since indeed there is one God who will justify the circumcised by faith, and the uncircumcised through faith.

3:31 Do we then nullify the law through faith? May it never be! No, we establish the law.

4:1 What then will we say that Abraham, our forefather, has found according to the flesh?

4:2 For if Abraham was justified by works, he has something to boast about, but not toward God.

4:3 For what does the Scripture say? “Abraham believed God, and it was accounted to him for righteousness.”

4:4 Now to him who works, the reward is not counted as grace, but as something owed.

4:5 But to him who doesn’t work, but believes in him who justifies the ungodly, his faith is accounted for righteousness.

4:6 Even as David also pronounces blessing on the man to whom God counts righteousness apart from works,

4:7 “Blessed are they whose iniquities are forgiven, whose sins are covered.

4:8 Blessed is the man whom the Lord will by no means charge with sin.”

4:9 Is this blessing then pronounced on the circumcised, or on the uncircumcised also? For we say that faith was accounted to Abraham for righteousness.

4:10 How then was it counted? When he was in circumcision, or in uncircumcision? Not in circumcision, but in uncircumcision.

4:11 He received the sign of circumcision, a seal of the righteousness of the faith which he had while he was in uncircumcision, that he might be the father of all those who believe, though they might be in uncircumcision, that righteousness might also be accounted to them.

4:12 He is the father of circumcision to those who not only are of the circumcision, but who also walk in the steps of that faith of our father Abraham, which he had in uncircumcision.

4:13 For the promise to Abraham and to his offspring that he should be heir of the world wasn’t through the law, but through the righteousness of faith.

4:14 For if those who are of the law are heirs, faith is made void, and the promise is made of no effect.

4:15 For the law produces wrath, for where there is no law, neither is there disobedience.

4:16 For this cause it is of faith, that it may be according to grace, to the end that the promise may be sure to all the offspring, not to that only which is of the law, but to that also which is of the faith of Abraham, who is the father of us all.

4:17 As it is written, “I have made you a father of many nations.” This is in the presence of him whom he believed: God, who gives life to the dead, and calls the things that are not, as though they were.

4:18 Besides hope, Abraham in hope believed, to the end that he might become a father of many nations, according to that which had been spoken, “So will your offspring be.”

4:19 Without being weakened in faith, he didn’t consider his own body, already having been worn out, (he being about a hundred years old), and the deadness of Sarah’s womb.

4:20 Yet, looking to the promise of God, he didn’t waver through unbelief, but grew strong through faith, giving glory to God,

4:21 and being…

referenced regarding God turning people over to a reprobate mind

1 Paul, a servant of Jesus Christ, called to be an apostle, set apart for the Good News of God,

2 which he promised before through his prophets in the holy Scriptures,

3 concerning his Son, who was born of the offspring of David according to the flesh,

4 who was declared to be the Son of God with power, according to the Spirit of holiness, by the resurrection from the dead, Jesus Christ our Lord,

5 through whom we received grace and apostleship, for obedience of faith among all the nations, for his name’s sake;

6 among whom you are also called to belong to Jesus Christ;

7 to all who are in Rome, beloved of God, called to be saints: Grace to you and peace from God our Father and the Lord Jesus Christ.

8 First, I thank my God through Jesus Christ for all of you, that your faith is proclaimed throughout the whole world.

9 For God is my witness, whom I serve in my spirit in the Good News of his Son, how unceasingly I make mention of you always in my prayers,

10 requesting, if by any means now at last I may be prospered by the will of God to come to you.

11 For I long to see you, that I may impart to you some spiritual gift, to the end that you may be established;

12 that is, that I with you may be encouraged in you, each of us by the other’s faith, both yours and mine.

13 Now I don’t desire to have you unaware, brothers, that I often planned to come to you, and was hindered so far, that I might have some fruit among you also, even as among the rest of the Gentiles.

14 I am debtor both to Greeks and to foreigners, both to the wise and to the foolish.

15 So, as much as is in me, I am eager to preach the Good News to you also who are in Rome.

16 For I am not ashamed of the Good News of Christ, because it is the power of God for salvation for everyone who believes; for the Jew first, and also for the Greek.

17 For in it is revealed God’s righteousness from faith to faith. As it is written, “But the righteous shall live by faith.”

18 For the wrath of God is revealed from heaven against all ungodliness and unrighteousness of men, who suppress the truth in unrighteousness,

19 because that which is known of God is revealed in them, for God revealed it to them.

20 For the invisible things of him since the creation of the world are clearly seen, being perceived through the things that are made, even his everlasting power and divinity; that they may be without excuse.

21 Because, knowing God, they didn’t glorify him as God, neither gave thanks, but became vain in their reasoning, and their senseless heart was darkened.

22 Professing themselves to be wise, they became fools,

23 and traded the glory of the incorruptible God for the likeness of an image of corruptible man, and of birds, and four-footed animals, and creeping things.

24 Therefore God also gave them up in the lusts of their hearts to uncleanness, that their bodies should be dishonored among themselves;

25 who exchanged the truth of God for a lie, and worshiped and served the creature rather than the Creator, who is blessed forever. Amen.

26 For this reason, God gave them up to vile passions. For their women changed the natural function into that which is against nature.

27 Likewise also the men, leaving the natural function of the woman, burned in their lust toward one another, men doing what is inappropriate with men, and receiving in themselves the due penalty of their error.

28 Even as they refused to have God in their knowledge, God gave them up to a reprobate mind, to do those things which are not fitting;

29 being filled with all unrighteousness, sexual immorality, wickedness, covetousness, malice; full of envy, murder, strife, deceit, evil habits, secret slanderers,

30 backbiters, hateful to God, insolent, haughty, boastful, inventors of evil things, disobedient to parents,

31 without understanding, covenant breakers, without natural affection, unforgiving, unmerciful;

32 who, knowing the ordinance of God, that those who practice such things are worthy of death, not only do the same, but also approve of those who practice them.

Colossians 4

compared alongside Philemon as a companion letter sent at the same time to Colossae

1 Masters, give to your servants that which is just and equal, knowing that you also have a Master in heaven.

2 Continue steadfastly in prayer, watching therein with thanksgiving;

3 praying together for us also, that God may open to us a door for the word, to speak the mystery of Christ, for which I am also in bonds;

4 that I may reveal it as I ought to speak.

5 Walk in wisdom toward those who are outside, redeeming the time.

6 Let your speech always be with grace, seasoned with salt, that you may know how you ought to answer each one.

7 All my affairs will be made known to you by Tychicus, the beloved brother, faithful servant, and fellow bondservant in the Lord.

8 I am sending him to you for this very purpose, that he may know your circumstances and comfort your hearts,

9 together with Onesimus, the faithful and beloved brother, who is one of you. They will make known to you everything that is going on here.

10 Aristarchus, my fellow prisoner, greets you, and Mark, the cousin of Barnabas (concerning whom you received commandments, “if he comes to you, receive him”),

11 and Jesus who is called Justus. These are my only fellow workers for God’s Kingdom who are of the circumcision, men who have been a comfort to me.

12 Epaphras, who is one of you, a servant of Christ, salutes you, always striving for you in his prayers, that you may stand perfect and complete in all the will of God.

13 For I testify about him, that he has great zeal for you, and for those in Laodicea, and for those in Hierapolis.

14 Luke, the beloved physician, and Demas greet you.

15 Greet the brothers who are in Laodicea, and Nymphas, and the assembly that is in his house.

16 When this letter has been read among you, cause it to be read also in the assembly of the Laodiceans; and that you also read the letter from Laodicea.

17 Tell Archippus, “Take heed to the ministry which you have received in the Lord, that you fulfill it.”

18 The salutation of me, Paul, with my own hand: remember my bonds. Grace be with you. Amen.

Isaiah 34

listed among prophecies concerning Edom cited from Easton's Bible Dictionary

1 Come near, you nations, to hear! Listen, you peoples. Let the earth and all it contains hear; the world, and everything that comes from it.

2 For Yahweh is enraged against all the nations, and angry with all their armies. He has utterly destroyed them. He has given them over for slaughter.

3 Their slain will also be cast out, and the stench of their dead bodies will come up; and the mountains will melt in their blood.

4 All of the army of the sky will be dissolved. The sky will be rolled up like a scroll, and all its armies will fade away, as a leaf fades from off a vine or a fig tree.

5 For my sword has drunk its fill in the sky. Behold, it will come down on Edom, and on the people of my curse, for judgment.

6 Yahweh’s sword is filled with blood. It is covered with fat, with the blood of lambs and goats, with the fat of the kidneys of rams; for Yahweh has a sacrifice in Bozrah, And a great slaughter in the land of Edom.

7 The wild oxen will come down with them, and the young bulls with the mighty bulls; and their land will be drunken with blood, and their dust made greasy with fat.

8 For Yahweh has a day of vengeance, a year of recompense for the cause of Zion.

9 Its streams will be turned into pitch, its dust into sulfur, And its land will become burning pitch.

10 It won’t be quenched night nor day. Its smoke will go up forever. From generation to generation, it will lie waste. No one will pass through it forever and ever.

11 But the pelican and the porcupine will possess it. The owl and the raven will dwell in it. He will stretch the line of confusion over it, and the plumb line of emptiness.

12 They shall call its nobles to the kingdom, but none shall be there; and all its princes shall be nothing.

13 Thorns will come up in its palaces, nettles and thistles in its fortresses; and it will be a habitation of jackals, a court for ostriches.

14 The wild animals of the desert will meet with the wolves, and the wild goat will cry to his fellow. Yes, the night creature shall settle there, and shall find herself a place of rest.

15 The arrow snake will make her nest there, and lay, hatch, and gather under her shade. Yes, the kites will be gathered there, every one with her mate.

16 Search in the book of Yahweh, and read: not one of these will be missing. None will lack her mate. For my mouth has commanded, and his Spirit has gathered them.

17 He has cast the lot for them, and his hand has divided it to them with a measuring line. They shall possess it forever. From generation to generation they will dwell in it.

Jeremiah 49

listed among prophecies concerning Edom cited from Easton's Bible Dictionary

1 Of the children of Ammon. Yahweh says: “Has Israel no sons? Has he no heir? Why then does Malcam possess Gad, and his people dwell in its cities?

2 Therefore behold, the days come,” says Yahweh, “that I will cause an alarm of war to be heard against Rabbah of the children of Ammon; and it will become a desolate heap, and her daughters will be burned with fire: then Israel will possess those who possessed him,” says Yahweh.

3 “Wail, Heshbon, for Ai is laid waste! Cry, you daughters of Rabbah! Clothe yourself in sackcloth. Lament, and run back and forth among the fences; for Malcam will go into captivity, his priests and his princes together.

4 Why do you boast in the valleys, your flowing valley, backsliding daughter? You trusted in her treasures, saying, ‘Who will come to me?’

5 Behold, I will bring a terror on you,” says the Lord, Yahweh of Armies, “from all who are around you. All of you will be driven completely out, and there will be no one to gather together the fugitives.

6 “But afterward I will reverse the captivity of the children of Ammon,” says Yahweh.

7 Of Edom, Yahweh of Armies says: “Is wisdom no more in Teman? Has counsel perished from the prudent? Has their wisdom vanished?

8 Flee! Turn back! Dwell in the depths, inhabitants of Dedan; for I will bring the calamity of Esau on him when I visit him.

9 If grape gatherers came to you, would they not leave some gleaning grapes? If thieves came by night, wouldn’t they steal until they had enough?

10 But I have made Esau bare, I have uncovered his secret places, and he will not be able to hide himself. His offspring is destroyed, with his brothers and his neighbors; and he is no more.

11 Leave your fatherless children. I will preserve them alive. Let your widows trust in me.”

12 For Yahweh says: “Behold, they to whom it didn’t pertain to drink of the cup will certainly drink; and are you he who will altogether go unpunished? You won’t go unpunished, but you will surely drink.

13 For I have sworn by myself,” says Yahweh, “that Bozrah will become an astonishment, a reproach, a waste, and a curse. All its cities will be perpetual wastes.”

14 I have heard news from Yahweh, and an ambassador is sent among the nations, saying, “Gather yourselves together! Come against her! Rise up to the battle!”

15 “For, behold, I have made you small among the nations, and despised among men.

16 As for your terror, the pride of your heart has deceived you, O you who dwell in the clefts of the rock, who hold the height of the hill, though you should make your nest as high as the eagle, I will bring you down from there,” says Yahweh.

17 “Edom will become an astonishment. Everyone who passes by it will be astonished, and will hiss at all its plagues.

18 As in the overthrow of Sodom and Gomorrah and its neighbor cities,” says Yahweh, “no man will dwell there, neither will any son of man live therein.

19 “Behold, he will come up like a lion from the pride of the Jordan against the strong habitation: for I will suddenly make them run away from it; and whoever is chosen, I will appoint him over it. For who is like me? Who will appoint me a time? Who is the shepherd who will stand before me?”

20 Therefore hear the counsel of Yahweh, that he has taken against Edom; and his purposes, that he has purposed against the inhabitants of Teman: Surely they will drag them away, the little ones of the flock. Surely he will make their habitation desolate over them.

21 The earth trembles at the noise of their fall; there is a cry, the noise which is heard in the Red Sea.

22 Behold, he will come up and fly as the eagle, and spread out his wings against Bozrah. The heart of the mighty men of Edom at that day will be as the heart of a woman in her pangs.

23 Of Damascus: “Hamath is confounded, and Arpad; for they have heard evil news. They have melted away. There is sorrow on the sea. It can’t be quiet.

24 Damascus has grown feeble, she turns herself to flee, and trembling has seized her. Anguish and sorrows have taken hold of her, as of a woman in travail.

25 How is the city of praise not forsaken, the city of my joy?

26 Therefore her young men will fall in her streets, and all the men of war will be brought to silence in that day,” says Yahweh of Armies.

27 “I will kindle a fire in the wall of Damascus, and it will devour the palaces of Ben Hadad.”

28 Of Kedar, and of the kingdoms of Hazor, which Nebuchadnezzar king of Babylon struck. Yahweh says: “Arise, go up to Kedar, and destroy the children of the east.

29 They will take their tents and their flocks. they will carry away for themselves their curtains, all their vessels, and their camels; and they will cry to them, ‘Terror on every side!’

30 Flee! Wander far off! Dwell in the depths, you inhabitants of Hazor,” says Yahweh; “for Nebuchadnezzar king of Babylon has taken counsel against you, and has conceived a purpose against you.

31 Arise! Go up to a nation that is at ease, that dwells without care,” says Yahweh; “that has neither gates nor bars, that dwells alone.

32 Their camels will be a booty, and the multitude of their livestock a plunder. I will scatter to all winds those who have the corners of their beards cut off; and I will bring their calamity from every side of them,” says Yahweh.

33 Hazor will be a dwelling place of jackals, a desolation forever. No man will dwell there, neither will any son of man live therein.”

34 Yahweh’s word that came to Jeremiah the prophet concerning Elam, in the beginning of the reign of Zedekiah king of Judah, saying,

35 “Yahweh of Armies says: ‘Behold, I will break the bow of Elam, the chief of their might.

36 I will bring on Elam the four winds from the four quarters of the sky, and will scatter them toward all those winds. There will be no nation where the outcasts of Elam will not come.

37 I will cause Elam to be dismayed before their enemies, and before those who seek their life. I will bring evil on them, even my fierce anger,’ says Yahweh; ‘and I will send the sword after…

1 Yahweh’s word came to me, saying,

2 “Son of man, set your face toward the children of Ammon, and prophesy against them.

3 Tell the children of Ammon, ‘Hear the word of the Lord Yahweh! Thus says the Lord Yahweh, “Because you said, ‘Aha!’ against my sanctuary, when it was profaned; and against the land of Israel, when it was made desolate; and against the house of Judah, when they went into captivity:

4 therefore, behold, I will deliver you to the children of the east for a possession. They will set their encampments in you, and make their dwellings in you. They will eat your fruit and they will drink your milk.

5 I will make Rabbah a stable for camels, and the children of Ammon a resting place for flocks. Then you will know that I am Yahweh.”

6 For thus says the Lord Yahweh: “Because you have clapped your hands, stamped with the feet, and rejoiced with all the contempt of your soul against the land of Israel;

7 therefore, behold, I have stretched out my hand on you, and will deliver you for a plunder to the nations. I will cut you off from the peoples, and I will cause you to perish out of the countries. I will destroy you. Then you will know that I am Yahweh.”

8 “‘Thus says the Lord Yahweh: “Because Moab and Seir say, ‘Behold, the house of Judah is like all the nations;’

9 therefore, behold, I will open the side of Moab from the cities, from his cities which are on his frontiers, the glory of the country, Beth Jeshimoth, Baal Meon, and Kiriathaim,

10 to the children of the east, to go against the children of Ammon; and I will give them for a possession, that the children of Ammon may not be remembered among the nations.

11 I will execute judgments on Moab. Then they will know that I am Yahweh.”

12 “‘Thus says the Lord Yahweh: “Because Edom has dealt against the house of Judah by taking vengeance, and has greatly offended, and taken revenge on them;”

13 therefore thus says the Lord Yahweh, “I will stretch out my hand on Edom, and will cut off man and animal from it; and I will make it desolate from Teman. They will fall by the sword even to Dedan.

14 I will lay my vengeance on Edom by the hand of my people Israel. They will do in Edom according to my anger and according to my wrath. Then they will know my vengeance,” says the Lord Yahweh.

15 “‘Thus says the Lord Yahweh: “Because the Philistines have taken revenge, and have taken vengeance with contempt of soul to destroy with perpetual hostility;”

16 therefore thus says the Lord Yahweh, “Behold, I will stretch out my hand on the Philistines, and I will cut off the Cherethites, and destroy the remnant of the sea coast.

17 I will execute great vengeance on them with wrathful rebukes. Then they will know that I am Yahweh, when I lay my vengeance on them.”’”

1 Moreover Yahweh’s word came to me, saying,

Joel 3

listed among prophecies concerning Edom cited from Easton's Bible Dictionary

1 “For, behold, in those days, and in that time, when I restore the fortunes of Judah and Jerusalem,

2 I will gather all nations, and will bring them down into the valley of Jehoshaphat; and I will execute judgment on them there for my people, and for my heritage, Israel, whom they have scattered among the nations. They have divided my land,

3 and have cast lots for my people, and have given a boy for a prostitute, and sold a girl for wine, that they may drink.

4 “Yes, and what are you to me, Tyre, and Sidon, and all the regions of Philistia? Will you repay me? And if you repay me, I will swiftly and speedily return your repayment on your own head.

5 Because you have taken my silver and my gold, and have carried my finest treasures into your temples,

6 and have sold the children of Judah and the children of Jerusalem to the sons of the Greeks, that you may remove them far from their border.

7 Behold, I will stir them up out of the place where you have sold them, and will return your repayment on your own head;

8 and I will sell your sons and your daughters into the hands of the children of Judah, and they will sell them to the men of Sheba, to a faraway nation, for Yahweh has spoken it.”

9 Proclaim this among the nations: “Prepare for war! Stir up the mighty men. Let all the warriors draw near. Let them come up.

10 Beat your plowshares into swords, and your pruning hooks into spears. Let the weak say, ‘I am strong.’

11 Hurry and come, all you surrounding nations, and gather yourselves together.” Cause your mighty ones to come down there, Yahweh.

12 “Let the nations arouse themselves, and come up to the valley of Jehoshaphat; for there will I sit to judge all the surrounding nations.

13 Put in the sickle; for the harvest is ripe. Come, tread, for the wine press is full, the vats overflow, for their wickedness is great.”

14 Multitudes, multitudes in the valley of decision! For the day of Yahweh is near, in the valley of decision.

15 The sun and the moon are darkened, and the stars withdraw their shining.

16 Yahweh will roar from Zion, and thunder from Jerusalem; and the heavens and the earth will shake; but Yahweh will be a refuge to his people, and a stronghold to the children of Israel.

17 “So you will know that I am Yahweh, your God, dwelling in Zion, my holy mountain. Then Jerusalem will be holy, and no strangers will pass through her any more.

18 It will happen in that day, that the mountains will drop down sweet wine, the hills will flow with milk, all the brooks of Judah will flow with waters, and a fountain will flow out from Yahweh’s house, and will water the valley of Shittim.

19 Egypt will be a desolation, and Edom will be a desolate wilderness, for the violence done to the children of Judah, because they have shed innocent blood in their land.

20 But Judah will be inhabited forever, and Jerusalem from generation to generation.

21 I will cleanse their blood, that I have not cleansed: for Yahweh dwells in Zion.”

Amos 1

listed among prophecies concerning Edom cited from Easton's Bible Dictionary

1 The words of Amos, who was among the herdsmen of Tekoa, which he saw concerning Israel in the days of Uzziah king of Judah, and in the days of Jeroboam the son of Joash king of Israel, two years before the earthquake.

2 He said: “Yahweh will roar from Zion, and utter his voice from Jerusalem; and the pastures of the shepherds will mourn, and the top of Carmel will wither.”

3 Yahweh says: “For three transgressions of Damascus, yes, for four, I will not turn away its punishment; because they have threshed Gilead with threshing instruments of iron;

4 but I will send a fire into the house of Hazael, and it will devour the palaces of Ben Hadad.

5 I will break the bar of Damascus, and cut off the inhabitant from the valley of Aven, and him who holds the scepter from the house of Eden; and the people of Syria shall go into captivity to Kir,” says Yahweh.

6 Yahweh says: “For three transgressions of Gaza, yes, for four, I will not turn away its punishment; because they carried away captive the whole community, to deliver them up to Edom;

7 but I will send a fire on the wall of Gaza, and it will devour its palaces.

8 I will cut off the inhabitant from Ashdod, and him who holds the scepter from Ashkelon; and I will turn my hand against Ekron; and the remnant of the Philistines will perish,” says the Lord Yahweh.

9 Yahweh says: “For three transgressions of Tyre, yes, for four, I will not turn away its punishment; because they delivered up the whole community to Edom, and didn’t remember the brotherly covenant;

10 but I will send a fire on the wall of Tyre, and it will devour its palaces.”

11 Yahweh says: “For three transgressions of Edom, yes, for four, I will not turn away its punishment; because he pursued his brother with the sword, and cast off all pity, and his anger raged continually, and he kept his wrath forever;

12 but I will send a fire on Teman, and it will devour the palaces of Bozrah.”

13 Yahweh says: “For three transgressions of the children of Ammon, yes, for four, I will not turn away its punishment; because they have ripped open the pregnant women of Gilead, that they may enlarge their border.

14 But I will kindle a fire in the wall of Rabbah, and it will devour its palaces, with shouting in the day of battle, with a storm in the day of the whirlwind;

15 and their king will go into captivity, he and his princes together,” says Yahweh.

Malachi 1

listed among prophecies concerning Edom cited from Easton's Bible Dictionary

1 A revelation, Yahweh’s word to Israel by Malachi.

2 “I have loved you,” says Yahweh. Yet you say, “How have you loved us?” “Wasn’t Esau Jacob’s brother?” says Yahweh, “Yet I loved Jacob;

3 but Esau I hated, and made his mountains a desolation, and gave his heritage to the jackals of the wilderness.”

4 Whereas Edom says, “We are beaten down, but we will return and build the waste places”; Yahweh of Armies says, “They shall build, but I will throw down; and men will call them ‘The Wicked Land,’ even the people against whom Yahweh shows wrath forever.”

5 Your eyes will see, and you will say, “Yahweh is great—even beyond the border of Israel!”

6 “A son honors his father, and a servant his master. If I am a father, then where is my honor? And if I am a master, where is the respect due me? Says Yahweh of Armies to you, priests, who despise my name. You say, ‘How have we despised your name?’

7 You offer polluted bread on my altar. You say, ‘How have we polluted you?’ In that you say, ‘Yahweh’s table is contemptible.’

8 When you offer the blind for sacrifice, isn’t that evil? And when you offer the lame and sick, isn’t that evil? Present it now to your governor! Will he be pleased with you? Or will he accept your person?” says Yahweh of Armies.

9 “Now, please entreat the favor of God, that he may be gracious to us. With this, will he accept any of you?” says Yahweh of Armies.

10 “Oh that there were one among you who would shut the doors, that you might not kindle fire on my altar in vain! I have no pleasure in you,” says Yahweh of Armies, “neither will I accept an offering at your hand.

11 For from the rising of the sun even to the going down of the same, my name is great among the nations, and in every place incense will be offered to my name, and a pure offering: for my name is great among the nations,” says Yahweh of Armies.

12 “But you profane it, in that you say, ‘Yahweh’s table is polluted, and its fruit, even its food, is contemptible.’

13 You say also, ‘Behold, what a weariness it is!’ and you have sniffed at it”, says Yahweh of Armies; “and you have brought that which was taken by violence, the lame, and the sick; thus you bring the offering. Should I accept this at your hand?” says Yahweh.

14 “But the deceiver is cursed, who has in his flock a male, and vows, and sacrifices to the Lord a defective thing; for I am a great King,” says Yahweh of Armies, “and my name is awesome among the nations.”

Colossians 3:16-17

quoted as the benediction closing the service

16 Let the word of Christ dwell in you richly; in all wisdom teaching and admonishing one another with psalms, hymns, and spiritual songs, singing with grace in your heart to the Lord.

17 Whatever you do, in word or in deed, do all in the name of the Lord Jesus, giving thanks to God the Father, through him.

Recap

The message in order, in a few minutes of reading.

Pastor Mark opened in the book of Obadiah, the shortest book in the Hebrew Bible, before circling back to connect it with last week's message from Philemon and a preview of Colossians. The sermon sat with the weight of God's judgment on Edom before pointing toward the grace that the New Testament reveals. It was a deliberately uncomfortable morning, and he was honest about that.

What was said

Obadiah arrives with no introduction and no genealogy. We do not know which Obadiah wrote it or exactly when, though most place it around 600 BC. What is clear is that God commissioned it, and that alone settles its authority. The vision is directed at Edom, the kingdom descended from Esau, which occupied a stretch of high, rocky terrain southeast of Judah and was easily three times its size. Their geography made them feel untouchable.

That feeling of being untouchable is exactly what God indicts first. "The arrogance of your heart has deceived you," He says, "you who live in the clefts of the rock." The very thing the Edomites trusted in, elevation and military position, is the thing God promises to strip away. Pastor Mark drew a line between that ancient pride and the kind of cockiness that gets celebrated in politics and entertainment today, and the line was not flattering to either.

The specific charge against Edom was not simply that they were enemies of Israel. It was that they stood aloof and watched when a brother was in trouble. Jacob and Esau were blood, and the Edomites had watched strangers sack Jerusalem without lifting a hand, and then had looted in the aftermath and cut off the survivors who were trying to flee. A story from back home made the point plain: even a family feud over a hall tree does not mean you let an outsider hurt your own.

God's verdict is announced without softening. Edom's allies will betray them, their wise men will be taken, and in the end the house of Esau will be stubble to the fire of the house of Jacob. There will be no survivor. Pastor Mark connected this to the historical record, reading from Easton's Bible Dictionary: after roughly seventeen hundred years as a people, the Edomites disappeared entirely, their language forgotten, their capital Petra left to birds and reptiles. God said it, and it settled.

The one crack of light in the whole book is a single verse: "On Mount Zion there will be those who escape, and it will be holy." Pastor Mark acknowledged that Obadiah does not tell you how. It only tells you that a way out exists. The Old Testament, he said, is the New Testament concealed, and Obadiah points toward a redeemer without naming one.

From there he turned back to Philemon and Colossians, showing the congregation that the two letters were written at the same time, carried by the same men, Tychicus and Onesimus, to the same city of Colossae. Onesimus was Philemon's runaway slave, and Paul was sending him home with a letter asking Philemon to receive him as a brother, pledging to cover whatever Onesimus owed. Pastor Mark said Martin Luther saw that plainly: what Paul did for Onesimus before Philemon is exactly what Christ did for us before God the Father. Whatever we owe, He said put it on Me. Colossians one is where the series goes next.

Doing a Bible study?

Here is a guide we have prepared for you: the passages in order, questions for the group, and room to write.

  1. Pastor James described Edom as a people who felt secure and untouchable because of their geography and military strength, and he connected that to the arrogance we see celebrated in politics and entertainment today. Where do you see that same kind of 'who is going to bring me down' thinking show up in your own life?
  2. The sermon pointed out that when Jerusalem was attacked, Edom stood aloof and watched rather than helping their brother Jacob. Can you think of a time when you stood back and watched someone struggle when you had the means to help, and what kept you from stepping in?

2:45 Speaker 1Amen. Thank you. So, this morning, following that, God said it, I believe it, and that settles it for me. Y'all know that I usually preach in order from the New Testament and today, we are going to go to Obadiah. Obadiah.
3:03 Alright. God's word of a dark cloud of impending judgment. God said it and I believe it and that settles it. Obadiah is a very, very dark cloud indeed. There's very, very little to hope for especially if you are of Edom or of the line of Esau but Obadiah is where we're going to start.
3:24 I'm going to do a kind of a sharp turn towards the end and work us back towards the New Testament but this week, as I was considering what to preach, I know the next book that we're going to and I'll let you know before the end of this sermon. We have been doing a chronological study. We started just by studying the life of Jesus in the book of John. I know that it's a late book but it gives us the gospel. It's the gospel of belief.
3:48 So we studied first from John, then we studied the book of Acts and we've been using that as a framework. Off of that, we've been building our chronological study of the rest of the New Testament epistles. Last week, I went through from Acts and I went through with maps and everything else moving forward from the time when Paul was writing to the Romans from Corinth and his whole travels between that time before he actually got to Rome. He didn't get there the way that he thought he would. He got there arrested and he's under house arrest in Rome and from Rome, he writes the book of Philemon, shortest book in the New Testament or well, it's a short book, not the shortest in New Testament.
4:28 It's a short book, one chapter 25 verses and we went through the whole book last week. So, if you missed it and a bunch of you did, the Nixal alert scared us all. The the government alerting us that it was the snow was coming and it would not stop. It would not lull. It kept a lot of us home.
4:43 So, if you have not heard about Philemon, we'll touch on it at the very end of this message but the from Philemon will go forward from there. Obadiah first though. So, here we go. Obadiah, the vision of Obadiah. Obadiah is named here but it doesn't even tell who his father is.
5:03 It doesn't tell which Obadiah. If you look in the Old Testament in different places, you'll see actually quite a few guys named Obadiah. We don't know which one this was. We don't know from the text where exactly this was or what time period. There are some people that think it was earlier, eight or nine hundred BC.
5:23 Most people think it's around six hundred BC when this was written but this is the vision of Obadiah. There's no doubt. It's scripture. God said it. I believe it.
5:32 That settles it. Actually, God said it and that settles it. I don't have to believe it for it to settle it. God spoke. The vision of Obadiah, thus says the Lord God concerning Edom.
5:43 We have heard a report from the Lord and an envoy has been sent among the nations saying, arise and let us go against her for battle. The her there is referring to Edom. Now Edom, if you don't know where it is or what it is, it is a kingdom. The Kingdom of Edom is down here in yellow. You can see the Moab, Kingdom of Moab, the kingdom of Ammon.
6:11 You remember the Moabites and the Ammonites from your studies of the Old Testament. Jerusalem is right here. This is the Kingdom Of Israel and Judah. So this Philistine state, the Philistine Plain over here, these are all of the surrounding areas around Judah. Now, the Kingdom Of Edom lasted from the thirteenth century or some people say a little early earlier than that, BC until one twenty five BC when they were defeated utterly by the Hasmoneans.
6:42 So that's the Kingdom Of Eden. This is at its largest berry largest it was about this size and you see the dark red is where it was even encroaching and moving towards Judah and Jerusalem and they were encroaching on Israel, Jacob's territory. Right? This is what it looks like. Looks like kinda like the cliffs of insanity from the movie, The Princess Bride, doesn't it?
7:08 So, that is a hard, hard thing. If you've got the high ground here, it's a hard thing to work against. So it's easy to defend. You just lean over with your arrow and shoot the people as they climb your wall. It's a it's an easy place to defend and the Edomites or Esau, could we turn these lights right here off so that we can see the slides a little bit better?
7:32 That thank you very much. So that is what they were thinking. Now, look how the size of that as compared to Judah, it is two, three times the size of Judah and the next verse here too says, behold. Now this is the Lord that has declared this. Behold, I will make you small among the nations.
7:56 You are greatly despised, hated. All of your neighbors can't stand you. Now I'm gonna make you small and it's the Lord that's speaking. So does Edom look small? No.
8:09 It's not small. The arrogance of your heart has deceived you. You who live in the clefts of the rock, in the loftiness of your dwelling place. Most of their cities were cities on a hill that had a flat top, easily defended, and every other place in the Bible where it mentions the clefts of the rock. It's a good thing to be.
8:37 You have hidden my soul in the cleft of the rock. Cover me there with your hand as the hymn says. Usually, for the people of God to be in the cleft of the rock is a safe, safe place. But he's saying the arrogance of your heart has deceived you, you who live in the clefts of the rock and the loftiness, the high upness, the loftiness of your dwelling place who say in your heart, now who's gonna bring me down to earth? In Hollywood, in Washington DC, on the news, and in the on the television, arrogance is seen to be a good thing.
9:11 Cockiness a certain amount of cockiness is expected of a politician or of a movie star or of a sports figure. But can you hear anybody saying that? Who's gonna bring me down to earth? Who's gonna who's gonna stop me? Who will bring me down to earth?
9:26 That is arrogance. It's not a good thing. God resists the proud that gives grace to the humble. Now, it's a dark cloud. We're not going to talk about grace at all in this book.
9:41 Though you build high up like the eagle, though you set your nest up among the stars. From there, I will bring you down and Obadiah reinforces it, declares the Lord. This is the Lord God almighty. He is the all powerful one. He has the strength to do it.
9:59 From there, I will bring you down. Declares the Lord. If themes came to you by night or if robbers by night and then he has a little parenthesis here. He goes, oh, how you will be ruined. The next verse here says, would they not steal only until they had enough?
10:20 If thieves came in, you know, thieves come in, they look for the valuables, they take that, and then they go, right? He's saying, it's going to be worse than that. It's not just the little stuff. It's not just what you think is valuable. It's all going to be gone.
10:34 Everything. This is a book of impending judgement and doom on the house of Edom, on the enemies of God. Now, as Protestants, as Christians, we have taken this to be for all of the enemies of God. Obadiah was specifically speaking in his time about Edom and this is one of what we would call a split range prophecy. It is true in the near future and then it is true in the future.
11:00 Does that make sense to you? It's a short range prophecy for just Edom but for all enemies of God. Would they not steal only until they had enough? If grape gatherers came to you, say a whole army of people came and they were going to steal your vineyard and that grape gatherers came to to you. Would they not leave some gleanings?
11:18 You could go behind them and still find some grapes. Nope. That's not the way it's going to be. Oh, how Esau will be ransacked. Actually, it was the, oh, how you will be ruined and then, oh, how Esau will be ransacked.
11:33 Now, Esau, I highlighted his name there because Esau is the father of the Edomites. Most of you probably remember that. Sarah and Abraham, you know, God makes a promise to Abraham. He says, get up and leave the land which you know and go to a place that I'll show you and Sarah follows along with Abraham in that promise and then he says, and I'm going to make great generations and a great nation out of you and the two of em got together and figuring we're old. We can't that now.
12:03 Y'all remember the story, right? So, they devise a plan for Abraham to take Hagar and they come up with Ishmael which was not the child of the promise and the Ishmaelites are still still tormenting us actually. Still tormenting Israel too. That was not the plan of God. That was not the promise of God but Abraham and Sarah would have a son.
12:27 This child of promise would be Isaac and they did and then Isaac and Rebecca had two sons, Esau and Jacob. Now, Esau was the older brother. Y'all remember this from Old Testament, right? From Sunday school, this is a good Sunday school lesson. Esau, the ruddy hunter, red faced, and strong and Jacob, the mama's boy who hung around and cooked with mama.
12:51 That's the way it was presented to me anyway. Jacob was a heck of a cook. He made some stew and then Esau traded his birthright. Now, Jacob was a trickster. He was a deceiver.
13:01 He was not a great guy. He grabbed on to the heel even from the earliest. He grabbed on to the heel of his brother as they're coming through the womb and he was always a deceiver. His name even means deceiver. So we got two guys.
13:17 Actually, Esau looks like a pretty good guy. But he sells his birthright. Jacob, aka Israel, took that birthright and he became the father of the 12 tribes of Israel and that's what we see. Now, Esau became the father of the Edomites. So, this message of judgement that we have in Obadiah, the whole book of Obadiah is about how Edom will be utterly ransacked and ruined.
13:46 Oh, how Esau will be ransacked and his hidden treasures searched out. Can we say at the very beginning that to be an enemy of God is not a favorable position or a place to be envied? To find yourself at odds with the almighty. That's a bad bad spot to be in. All of the men that are allied with you will send you forth to the border.
14:11 Now who is the you? The you is Edom. All of the men who have allied with you, Edom, they're going to send you out to the front lines and the men who are at peace with you will deceive you and they will overpower you. So, even the folks that you think are on your side are going to be against you. His first line said that this envoy had been sent out to the nations to let's make war against her, Edom.
14:39 They're gonna deceive you and overpower you, the ones you think are your friends. They who eat your bread out of your bounty. Those are the ones that are going to set an ambush for you and trap you. There's no understanding in him. There's actually the King James version is even more dramatic.
14:57 I think in this. It's almost Shakespearean. All the men of thy confederacy have brought thee even to the border. They pushed you out to the brink. The men that were at peace with thee have deceived thee and prevailed against thee.
15:10 They that eat thy bread have laid a wound under thee. There is none understanding. In him, in all the land of Edom, nobody is understanding this properly and then Obadiah goes on with the words of the Lord which are true and will come to pass. Will I not on that day, declares the Lord, destroy wise men from Edom and understanding from the Mountain Of Esau? Can I not take that away?
15:36 I'm almighty God. Then, your mighty men will be dismayed, oh Teman, and Teman is the southern part of Edom. So that everyone may be cut off from the Mountain Of Esau which is supposed to be indefensible, right? I mean, it's supposed to be easily defendable, excuse me. So that everyone may be cut off from the Mountain Of Esau and how?
15:59 By slaughter. Because of the violence to your brother, Jacob. Now, how was Esau or how was Edom against Israel? He says, because of the violence to your brother Jacob, you're sinning against the chosen ones of God, the people of God because you were violent towards them. You will be covered with shame and you will be cut off forever.
16:29 Forever. Utterly. On the day that you stood aloof, on the day that strangers carried off his wealth and foreigners entered his gates and cast lots for Jerusalem. How many of y'all have brothers or sisters, siblings? Most of us do.
16:47 Now, when my brother and I were little actually, I told this story day before yesterday. We had one pair of boxing gloves. I was the older brother, so I got we're both right handed. I got the left hand boxing glove. My brother's right handed and he was younger so he got the right handed boxing glove.
17:03 He could jab a little better with his right and we fought like cats and dogs. We just fought all the time, fought. We had cousins that fought worse than we did. Reggie and Ted were even worse when we were being real bad. My mom would say, y'all are fighting like Reggie and Ted.
17:18 Anyway, if Reggie or Ted or Jeremy or Thomas or anybody else in town was to mess with my little brother, no. You don't mess with my little brother. He's saying on the day that you stood aloof and watched someone whip your little brother. On that day, when you watched a stranger not of the house. Now Jacob and Esau were still brothers, you know, and their peoples were really related.
17:47 Edomites are Semitic peoples. He's saying that as close as our relationship was, I know that there was some animosity. I have another story from back home. There was a family that I knew that this part of the family did not talk to this part of the family. I knew both parts of the family could talk to both of them just fine.
18:07 And when I came down to what exactly was the reason why y'all don't talk to each other? Why does this part never talk to this part? So and so, four generations ago, had gotten a hall tree after a death in the family. A hall tree is the thing you hang your hat and coats on. That hall tree was the beginning of two factions that never spoke to each other because so and so got that hall tree after so and so passed.
18:41 It's the it's a true story. On the day that strangers carried off as well and foreigners entered his gate and cast lots for Jerusalem, you two were just as one of them. You didn't say, you know what? I'm gonna help him out. I've got this great army.
18:56 I've got this position, and they have to go through me in some ways to get to them. You stood aloof and watched as someone whipped your little brother. You were as one of them. Do not gloat over your brother's day, the day of his misfortune, and do not rejoice over the sons of Judah in the day of their destruction. How many times did Judah get whooped?
19:19 It happened. You know, it happened. He's saying, don't be happy about your enemy's downfall. Don't be happy when your little brother gets it. Yes.
19:30 Do not boast in the day of their distress. Do not enter the gate of my people, capital m. That's God almighty speaking. Don't enter the gate of my people on the day of their disaster. Yes, you, Edom, enemy of God.
19:44 Do not gloat over their calamity in the day of their disaster. And do not loot their wealth in the day of their disaster. Now, if I were to bring it forward into today, do you know when a pastor falls or when a minister falls? Do you know how many people just sit there and go, I love it when that happens. Bunch of hypocrites.
20:05 Christians are all like that. That's a lot like this. Don't gloat when people fall. Don't be upset. I mean, don't don't when other people are upset, be happy about it.
20:17 Don't gloat over their calamity in their day of their disaster. Don't loot their wealth in the day of their disaster. Do not stand at the fork of the road just to cut down their fugitives, the ones who are fleeing the fight, tripping them up, cutting them down, and do not imprison their survivors in the day of their distress. Strong words. And then, this dark cloud has a thunderclap of lightning.
20:44 And it is this, for the day of the Lord draws near on all the nations. Now, when you hear me mention the day of the Lord, up until today, pretty much every time you ever hear me mention the day of lord, it's with a smile on my face and with a sense of expectation that we will be reunited with Christ. The day of the great and mighty day of the Lord. Ultimate salvation when we will know as we're known and when we love as we're loved. But for those who are enemies of God, it will not be that way.
21:17 That great and mighty day of the Lord is a sword that cuts both ways. For the day of the Lord draws near on all the nations. Just as you have done, it will be done to you. Your dealings will return on your own head. And I I realized that this is the reverend doctor Martin Luther King junior weekend and Monday is his holiday and when I read this, the day of the Lord draws near on all the nations just as you have done, it will be done to you.
21:46 Your dealings will return on your own head. I remember a quote. He would say this fairly often. It comes up in a lot of his sermons that the that the arc of the moral universe bends toward justice. It's a long arc.
22:02 It says, the arc of the moral universe is long but it bends toward justice. Remember when he said, I may not enter the promised land but I've seen it and I know that it's coming. It bends toward justice. As you have done, it will be done to you. Your dealings will return on your head.
22:19 That peaceful man and that peaceful message. He trusted in the justice of God. He trusted in the word of God. He trusted that as people have done, it would be dealt back to them. Now, again, there's no grace mentioned here for Edom, for the enemies of God, for Esau.
22:41 Because just as you drank on my holy mountain, all of the nations will drink continually and they will drink and swallow and become as if they never even existed. 16 says 17, but on Mount Zion, there will be those who escape, and it will be holy, and the house of Jacob will possess their possessions. This is the only silver lining in this whole dark, dark cloud right here. There will be those who escape. Praise God.
23:10 There is a way out. Now, from our study of Romans, especially three, four, five. There's no one that's righteous. No, not one and so we're all enemies of God. We start out as enemies of God.
23:23 We start out in the position of Edom with the wrath of God hanging over our head. In the great awakening, there was a preacher named Charles Finney. He all know Charles Finney. Have you ever heard of him? So, he would go into a town.
23:34 They'd set up a tent. It wasn't just revivalism. It was a place where the actual great awakening was happening. Charles Finney would go in and preach 28 sermons in a row on the judgment of God. Night after night after night after night, the judgment of God.
23:50 You stand condemned and the wrath of God is just hovering over you. You're are a rebellious and enemy of God and he would offer no invitation and no hope for a whole month. After twenty eight days, then he would bring the gospel of the cross of Jesus and people would be wailing and and coming forward. He had the first two rows where the anxious seats for those who are not believers in Jesus and they would accept that but so far, this is the only silver lining that we've got. On Mount Zion, there will be those who escape and it will be holy.
24:29 The Old Testament is the New Testament concealed. This points toward a savior. It points towards a redeemer. It points to a way out but it does not reveal what it is. And it will be holy and the house of Jacob will possess their possessions.
24:47 Then the house of Jacob will be a fire and the house of Joseph, a flame, but the house of Esau will be as stubble. Now, and flame and stubble. Which one's going to win? Fire and flame are going to do pretty good. And they will set them on fire and consume them so that there will be no survivor, not even one, utterly destroyed of the house of Esau.
25:08 For the Lord has spoken. God said it. That settles it. The Lord has spoken. Then, those of the Negev, we could do a geography lesson.
25:18 I'm just gonna move through it quickly. Then, those of the Negev will possess the Mountain Of Esau And those of the Shephelah will possess the Philistine Plain and all also possess the territory of Ephraim and the territory of Samaria. And Benjamin will possess Gilead. Not only is Edom going to be thoroughly covered up. All of the rest around it is gonna belong to the people of God and the exiles of this host of the sons of Israel who are among the Canaanites as far as Zarepheth and the exiles of Jerusalem who are in Sepherad will possess the cities of the Negev.
25:58 The deliverers will ascend Mount Zion to judge the Mountain Of Esau and the kingdom ultimately, this is the last of last word of this whole book. The kingdom will be the Lord's. God almighty has spoken. The kingdom will be his, and the rest of them will be utterly cut off. Now that is a dark, dark cloud, isn't it?
26:18 Aren't you glad we have the New Testament? I understand Greek a whole lot better than Hebrew, and I understand grace, I think, though it makes no sense. Better than I understand law. When I look at Obadiah and I think, poor Edomites. Poor Edomites.
26:37 Poor enemies of God. Is there no hope? No. There was no hope for them. When we were in early Romans in the in chapter one and it said that God would turn them over in their sin to a reprobate mind.
26:51 They were past the point of being able to recognize their sin or God's holiness, and they would just be done for. Edom had already passed that point, and Obadiah was delivering the message. So the takeaways from this short, shortest book in the Hebrew Bible are enemy of God is not a position to be envied. As as bad as some people think that they are and flouting the cross and flouting God in front of people. I think of all the folks who just say, ah, I'd rather rule in hell.
27:25 Well, you're not gonna be ruling in hell than serve God. Enemy of God is not a position to be envied. To be arrogant is not a good thing no matter what Hollywood or Washington DC tell us. Cockiness or arrogance is not a good thing. Don't be so high and mighty.
27:43 The Lord God can and will bring you down. Security, I think of Peter. Humble yourselves under the mighty hand of God, therefore. Security in your earthly wealth is illusory. Trust in the Lord alone.
27:58 For the day of the Lord draws near on all the nations. Now, that's Old Testament. That's a scary, scary thing. New Testament, that's an overjoyed statement. The day of the Lord is coming for all every tribe, tongue, and nation but we haven't gotten to that.
28:12 This is Old Testament right here. For those who remain enemies of the Lord, there will be no survivor. You will not make it out. So how about an invitation right now? No.
28:26 Diane said, you you you backpedal away from that Old Testament. You don't like that Old Testament. I don't like that Old Testament. I I recognize that it is the law of God and I recognize that it it points toward the new but without bringing the New Testament into it, it's really hard. I couldn't be Charles Finney.
28:41 28 of 28 messages of that in a row? No gracias. Why do people come back? Obadiah. So, last week, we were in Philemon and Philemon is a book that was written to a particular individual.
28:56 That individual was Philemon. He was a master. He had a church that met in his house and he was a master of at least one slave. Paul speaking on behalf of that slave sent one letter to one individual, Philemon. And we talked about it last week.
29:15 And to begin Philemon, we did the whole enchilada last week, one through 25. To begin, in the third verse, he said, grace to you and peace. He leads off with grace. My point every time we start a book is always start with grace and peace. That's what we have to offer as Christians.
29:30 The grace of God is what we have to offer and peace with him. He starts with it. The last verse in Philemon one twenty five is the grace of the Lord Jesus Christ be with your spirit. He ends with grace. I love that.
29:47 Grace and peace. Grace and peace. Now, there was none in Obadiah standing under the judgment of an almighty God. We all stand condemned but what he's offering is grace. The New Testament is the Old Testament revealed.
29:59 So Philemon, if you look at the whole book of Philemon and the chapter four of Colossians, there's some very interesting correlations. Now when I put them on my computer screen, I could read this. Yeah. I put those up there. They're basically the same length.
30:15 They're about the same length. If you look closely, this says Paul. It's from Paul. That's from Paul. Grace be with you.
30:26 Grace to you and peace. Archippus is there. He's also here somewhere. Right there. Archippus.
30:34 We look and we see Onesimus. Onesimus is there. Onesimus is there. A slave. Oh, masters.
30:40 Grant to your slaves. Epaphras is here. Epaphras is here. Luke is here. Luke is here.
30:46 Demus. Demus. Archippus again. All of these guys over here, most of them are mentioned over here, and most of them that are mentioned here are mentioned here. Philemon lived in Colossae.
30:58 He had a church that met in his house there and so when the letter was sent from where Paul was imprisoned in Rome to Colossae, it was sent with a couple of guys. This is this section up here in orange, which I can read and y'all probably can't. Excuse me. In Philemon, we saw, I have sent him back, Onesimus. I have sent him back to you in person.
31:22 That is I am sending my very heart. I love this guy. This guy whom I wished to keep with me. He became a Christian while I was here in prison. Onesimus came and met and he has become a Christian whom I wish to keep with me so that on your behalf, he might minister to me in my imprisonment for the gospel.
31:41 That's Onesimus. Onesimus is Philemon's runaway slave. Philemon had every right under Roman law to beat him or even to kill him. Martin Luther says, even as Christ did for us with God the father, Paul also does for Onesimus with Philemon. He's pleading Onesimus' case and he's saying, whatever he has done to sin against you, Philemon, put that to my account.
32:09 I will pay but receive him just as you would me. That's exactly what Christ did to step in between us and holy God and say, whatever they've done, put that on me and he did on the cross. Now, Colossians four says, so this guy, Onesimus, Paul said, I'm sending him back to you in person with this letter, this runaway slave. Imagine becoming a Christian, learning about Jesus, and working it out practically in your life by taking this back to a guy you knew could kill you. Taking that letter back.
32:47 It's about effective Christian faith that puts action with belief. Onesimus, Paul knew, was a believer. He knew that he was washed clean in the blood of the lamb, and he knew that he stood guilty before Philemon. And when he was sending him back, he was trusting in God almighty and in the godly character that Christ had produced in Philemon that he wouldn't kill him. That he would use him as a Christian brother in the mission of the gospel or send him back to Paul.
33:18 Now, look at Colossians. As to all of my affairs, Tychicus, our beloved brother and faithful servant and fellow bond servant in the Lord, will bring you information for I have sent him to you for this very purpose that you may know all about our circumstances and that he may encourage your hearts and with him, I have sent Onesimus. So now Onesimus and Tychicus are walking from Rome and getting to Colossae together. He sent an individual letter to Philemon to say, this is the right thing to do and I know that you'll do even more than that to Philemon and he sent to the Colossians, Tichicus and Onesimus and said, this is the gospel and he ends on this note, the very last verse of Colossians is I, Paul, write this greeting with my own hand, remember my imprisonment, grace be with you. It's the grace that's available through the cross of Jesus Christ.
34:13 That's Colossians four eighteen. Now we'll get into Colossians one next time that I preach. But I wanted you to see that these are hand in hand. They're going exactly same time period. It was delivered at the same time to the same place with the same heart from the same man.
34:30 Grace be with you and it is the grace of Jesus Christ on the cross. So, what happened historically to the Edomites? Does anybody know? I'm going to read something from the Easton. I'm looking for my glasses, Dale.
34:46 Let me borrow em. There you go. You got yours. Here we go. The Easton's Bible Dictionary says, there are many prophecies concerning Edom in the Old Testament.
34:57 Isaiah 34, Jeremiah 49, Ezekiel 25, 35, Joel three, Amos one, all of Obadiah, Malachi one, and they have been remarkably fulfilled. The present desolate condition of the land is a standing testimony to the inspiration of these prophecies. After an existence as a noble people for or as a people, excuse me, for about seventeen hundred years, it says here. They have utterly disappeared and their language is even forgotten forever. In Petra, where kings kept their court, Petra was their capital.
35:35 It was actually called Selah at the time. But in Petra where kings kept their court and where nobles assembled there, no man dwells. It is given by lot to the birds and the beasts and the reptiles. It is utterly destroyed. God said it and that settles it.
35:54 But what he's proclaiming in the New Testament is his grace available through Jesus Christ. If you find yourself today standing as a rebellious enemy of God saying, I'll make my own way. Thank you very much. I pray you'd reconsider and accept the grace he's offered. In Jesus' name, would y'all stand with me and we're gonna sing where he leads me, I will follow.
36:16 Scott, would you come up and help out? If anyone would walk forward, I would receive you and turn off my microphone. When they
36:32 Speaker 2hear my savior calling, I can hear my savior calling, I can hear my savior calling take thy cross and follow follow me where he leads me I will follow Where he leads me, I will follow. Where he leads me, I will follow. I'll go with him, with him all the way I'll go with him through the judgment I'll go with him the
37:30 Speaker 1I'll go with him through the
37:34 Speaker 2judgment judgment I'll go with him with him all the way Where he leads me, I will follow. Where he leads me, I will follow. Where he leads me, I will follow I'll go with him with him all the way will you give me grace and glory he will give me grace and glory he will give me grace and glory and go with me with me all the way where he leads me I will follow where he leads me I will follow Where he leads me, I will follow. I'll go with him. With Amen.
38:57 Speaker 1So, would you let the word of Christ richly dwell within you and all wisdom, teaching, and admonishing one another with psalms and hymns and spiritual songs, singing with thankfulness in your hearts to God and whatever you do in word or indeed, do all in the name of the Lord Jesus, giving thanks through him to God the Father. Amen.
