Godliness With Contentment Is Great Gain

June 17, 2018 · 1 Timothy

Scripture referenced 12 passages

The passage this message was preached from, in full, with every other passage it reached for.

Galatians 1:8-9

quoted to show that preaching a different gospel brings a curse

8 But even though we, or an angel from heaven, should preach to you any “good news” other than that which we preached to you, let him be cursed.

9 As we have said before, so I now say again: if any man preaches to you any “good news” other than that which you received, let him be cursed.

19 Go and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit,

20 teaching them to observe all things that I commanded you. Behold, I am with you always, even to the end of the age.” Amen.

1 Corinthians 10

whether you eat or drink or whatever you do, do it all for the glory of God

1 Now I would not have you ignorant, brothers, that our fathers were all under the cloud, and all passed through the sea;

2 and were all baptized into Moses in the cloud and in the sea;

3 and all ate the same spiritual food;

4 and all drank the same spiritual drink. For they drank of a spiritual rock that followed them, and the rock was Christ.

5 However with most of them, God was not well pleased, for they were overthrown in the wilderness.

6 Now these things were our examples, to the intent we should not lust after evil things, as they also lusted.

7 Don’t be idolaters, as some of them were. As it is written, “The people sat down to eat and drink, and rose up to play.”

8 Let us not commit sexual immorality, as some of them committed, and in one day twenty-three thousand fell.

9 Let us not test Christ, as some of them tested, and perished by the serpents.

10 Don’t grumble, as some of them also grumbled, and perished by the destroyer.

11 Now all these things happened to them by way of example, and they were written for our admonition, on whom the ends of the ages have come.

12 Therefore let him who thinks he stands be careful that he doesn’t fall.

13 No temptation has taken you except what is common to man. God is faithful, who will not allow you to be tempted above what you are able, but will with the temptation also make the way of escape, that you may be able to endure it.

14 Therefore, my beloved, flee from idolatry.

15 I speak as to wise men. Judge what I say.

16 The cup of blessing which we bless, isn’t it a sharing of the blood of Christ? The bread which we break, isn’t it a sharing of the body of Christ?

17 Because there is one loaf of bread, we, who are many, are one body; for we all partake of the one loaf of bread.

18 Consider Israel according to the flesh. Don’t those who eat the sacrifices participate in the altar?

19 What am I saying then? That a thing sacrificed to idols is anything, or that an idol is anything?

20 But I say that the things which the Gentiles sacrifice, they sacrifice to demons, and not to God, and I don’t desire that you would have fellowship with demons.

21 You can’t both drink the cup of the Lord and the cup of demons. You can’t both partake of the table of the Lord, and of the table of demons.

22 Or do we provoke the Lord to jealousy? Are we stronger than he?

23 “All things are lawful for me,” but not all things are profitable. “All things are lawful for me,” but not all things build up.

24 Let no one seek his own, but each one his neighbor’s good.

25 Whatever is sold in the butcher shop, eat, asking no question for the sake of conscience,

26 for “the earth is the Lord’s, and its fullness.”

27 But if one of those who don’t believe invites you to a meal, and you are inclined to go, eat whatever is set before you, asking no questions for the sake of conscience.

28 But if anyone says to you, “This was offered to idols,” don’t eat it for the sake of the one who told you, and for the sake of conscience. For “the earth is the Lord’s, and all its fullness.”

29 Conscience, I say, not your own, but the other’s conscience. For why is my liberty judged by another conscience?

30 If I partake with thankfulness, why am I denounced for something I give thanks for?

31 Whether therefore you eat, or drink, or whatever you do, do all to the glory of God.

32 Give no occasion for stumbling, either to Jews, or to Greeks, or to the assembly of God;

33 even as I also please all men in all things, not seeking my own profit, but the profit of the many, that they may be saved.

Recap

The message in order, in a few minutes of reading.

Pastor Carl worked through 1 Timothy 6:2b, focusing on Paul's charge to Timothy to teach and hold to sound doctrine while living it out in conduct. The sermon kept returning to a single tension: knowing the Bible and actually obeying it are not the same thing, and Paul knew that gap was already tearing at the church in Ephesus. The closing section pressed hard on contentment as the antidote to the love of money, which Paul calls a root of all kinds of evil.

What was said

Pastor Carl opened by surveying the imperative verbs scattered across the whole letter up to this point. His reason was simple: when Paul says "teach and urge these things," he had to be pointing back to something specific. The list he compiled was long, covering conduct expected of overseers, deacons, widows, elders, younger members, and workers. All of it, he argued, belongs to the same ongoing charge rather than to separate, disconnected subjects.

The sermon stopped on an image from Pilgrim's Progress to make the point that no one stands under the law on their own. Moses knocks Christian flat, and Jesus picks him up. That picture set up the Great Commission reading: the command is not just to go and teach content but to teach people "to obey" all that Christ commanded. Knowing and obeying are two different things, and the letter to Timothy is largely about closing that gap.

Then came the text from a friend that morning: a child at a church school had earned an A in Bible and an F in conduct. Pastor Carl called that a picture of a Pharisee, and said it is possible to know scripture inside out and still fail at living it. He tied that directly to what Paul says next: anyone who teaches a different doctrine and does not agree with the sound words of Christ is puffed up with conceit, craves controversy, and produces envy, dissension, slander, and constant friction. The description sounded, he said, very much like the present moment.

Paul's target in that section is not the political world at large but the church itself, and specifically those imagining that godliness is a means of financial gain. Pastor Carl was direct that the prosperity gospel is, in his word, hogwash. God does bless his children, but He does not set up a system by which anyone twists His arm into delivering a desired outcome.

The contrast Paul draws is between false godliness used for profit and genuine godliness paired with contentment, which Paul calls great gain. We brought nothing into this world and will take nothing out of it. If there is food and clothing, Paul says that is enough to be content with. Pastor Carl acknowledged that Maslow's hierarchy of needs often gets imported into ministry thinking here, but said Paul's model is simpler: keep teaching these things, keep your conduct godly, and be content.

The sermon closed on the love of money. Pastor Carl was careful to separate money itself, which he called neutral, from the love of money, which Paul identifies as a root of all kinds of evils. He used his grandmother's saying: you cannot stop a bird from flying over your head, but you can keep it from building a nest in your hair. Temptation is not sin, but entertaining it leads to the snare Paul describes, the trap that more money will fix everything. Some in Timothy's own circle, he suggested, may have already fallen exactly that way, wandering from the faith and piercing themselves with many pangs.

Doing a Bible study?

Here is a guide we have prepared for you: the passages in order, questions for the group, and room to write.

  1. Pastor Carl worked through a long list of imperatives Paul gave Timothy, covering both content and conduct. Which one on that list surprised you or stuck with you, and why?
  2. The sermon described someone who got an A in Bible and an F in conduct. Where do you think that gap most often shows up in your own life or in church life generally?

3:15 Speaker 2Oh, this guy. Thank you very much. That's quick. That's a home run right there.
5:50 Speaker 1Y'all can have a seat. That is beautiful hymn. So, we have a few announcements this morning. Not a ton of em but there is a patriotic color run that's happening. Young Life is sponsoring it.
6:04 You can register online if you'd like to be a part of it and race. Www.jacksonhole. Younglife.org. It's gonna happen at Jackson Hole High School. They always start things a little bit off because they say they mean it.

The thirtieth at the high school stadium. I mentioned this last week. Imma mention it again maybe for a few more weeks.
6:35 This right now media, if you don't know what it is, it is like the Christian version of Netflix. It has tons of Bible studies and tons of Christian movies and kids club type things. It's really, really good. Right now, media. If you would like to be signed up for it, you do not have to pay for it.
6:55 The church has a subscription and anybody who comes to church here, whether you're a member, regular attender, or if even if you're a visitor, if you'll take your bulletin and Email the office and say, hey, would you hook me up with Right Now Media? You can do that in a streaming web service of Christian content. So, if you want to do that, we want you to be able to. Connect Hour coordinator. So, you know what the connect hour is.
7:20 It happens at 10:00. So between services, we try to connect first service, second service by bringing coffee and bribes, I mean donuts down the hall, and fruit and cheeses and all kinds of stuff like that. So, this morning, for the connect hour, Nancy Terraziano continued in this service. She's been doing for the last two and a half, almost three years and she and other people, she coordinates the people to do it. But she's the one who oversees it.
7:47 She has moved down to Alpine. She knows in November she's going to be full time down there. But we're looking for somebody who would take her place and just be the coordinator that would sign people up. So if your gifting is that of hospitality or service and you'd like to be a part of it, and don't let my eyes bearing down on any of you make you think you have to be it. If you feel like it is it is you, then tell us and we would love for you to do that.
8:09 So connect our coordinator. This could be you. Rolling River Rampage. So we in the past have gone out of our way to decorate for Vacation Bible Schools. You know sometimes you come in here and there's just crepe paper and stuff all over the place.
8:25 Well, for the Rolling River Rampage, we decided to dig a river right in front of the church. We're going to connect Flat Creek right through the center of town and have the Rolling River Rampage. It'll be up by June 25 through June 27. They, the city is is making this difficult for us to get in or it's making everybody come in through exactly the same door. That's the way I saw more people coming in this morning because they were all funneled in one direction.
8:52 It's happening. Vacation Bible School, the twenty fifth through the twenty seventh, 9AM to noon. So, it's three hours in the mornings for three days. If you would like to be a volunteer in that, there's still time. You can sign up.
9:03 Seeing Liz Owings or signing up through our web page would work. Rolling River Rampage is going to be a fun one. So youth group this week. Dates and times change for the summer. We have we have youth group but it's happening on a text basis.
9:23 If you know one that's in the youth, if you know a youth that is going to these, then we would have you just talk to Mike directly and he is setting things up and he's going. They went and played paintball yesterday and it was quite a time over in Rexburg. Okay. So Jesus says to the maitre d, table for 26 please. The maitre d says, but there are only 13 of you and he said, yeah, but we all want to sit on the same side of the table.
9:49 Happy Father's Day. That was the dad joke for the morning. Yeah. Happy Father's Day. We are going to be talking about Paul's letter to Timothy.
10:00 He mentioned him as his true son in the faith but it's not a specifically Father's Day sermon but I do want to say happy Father's Day to all of y'all. For anything else, are there any other announcements that I'm forgetting? None. Okay. Then, that's it.
10:15 I would say we've highlighted prayer request in the bulletin and right now, I'm going take just a minute and if you would, you can look over your bulletin and see what the prayer requests are but Carl stopped before delivering the sermon on Monday night and just stopped and had a kind of an extended session of prayer for a minute. I'm not going to let this go on forever but if you have a specific request, Imma leave a little space for you to speak out your prayer request, okay? God almighty, we do come before the throne of grace. Lord, in Jesus name, we ask you for comfort and peace as we work through the difficult situations around us. We do pray specifically for these, for the family in New York, for Carol, for Rick.
11:01 Lord, acknowledging that you have saved his life. First word from all the paramedics and EMTs was that he would need a miracle to make it even to the hospital and he has shown shines of improvement, strength, and pray for Sue, his wife. That particular case, know lord. Mention them out loud. But God, for each one of the unspoken request and the others that we hold in our hearts, lord, instead of in our mouths right now.
11:30 I pray that you would give us clarity, peace that passes understanding, and that we would be able to offer a word of consolation and comfort to those who are struggling and hurting. In Jesus name, I thank you for all who are here in attendance today, and I pray that you'd impress upon each soul. Their need for you, Lord, would become a desire for you. And that you would meet those desires and grant them the desires of their heart in your son's name. Amen.
12:04 Amen. Now, can y'all stand and greet one another? I apologize to the introverts. When the piano starts up, you can start singing with everybody else.
12:27 Speaker 2You are my strength when I am weak. You are the treasure that I seek. You are my all in all. When I fall down, you pick me up. When I am dry, you fill my cup.
13:42 You are my all in all. That's a great
14:15 Speaker 1open my eyes that I may see.
14:29 Speaker 2Open my eyes may see glimpses of truth thou hast for me place in my hands the wonderful key that
16:33 Speaker 1Y'all can have a seat. I invite the frontline team to come forward. Lord, as we look into your word today, we're going to be in first Timothy and you have very, I think, strong words from Paul to his true son in the faith about adhering to good, sound, doctrine, and the words of Christ. I pray lord that we would be attentive to what has been said, what has been written, and lord, that which has been said and written as instruction for us in our lives. I pray that it would be done.
17:12 It said and written by God almighty to his humble and obedient servants that it would be done. So, lord, as we look at this time of offering, that we would, lord, have an open hand that we would give generously and sacrificially to see your kingdoms advance. I pray lord that that is foremost in front of our mind that there are people who do not know you, that you are reaching out to save. And so Lord, I pray you would do your reaching through us. In Jesus name, I ask that you would bless this offering that we give of our own free will joyfully.
17:54 I pray that you bless the gift and multiply them. Bless the giver, lord. In Jesus name, and for his purpose, message of the cross would advance. Amen. Judy.
21:26 So, we're up to first Timothy six two B. You see the two B. Two B because it's in a different paragraph. If you look at most Bibles, the translation, the very last thing I said last week was about the relationship between bond servants or employees. I updated a bit.
21:46 Forgive me but I feel like there are not many bond servants in this room but if we look at the text, it's really close to being an employee and some employers. The last thing we said was that, but then it says teach and urge these things. You could take it as the end of that and just say, oh, I'm talking to employees and masters and then teach and urge these things. But I don't think it is that. I think the paragraph divisions are correct.
22:10 And teach and urge these things goes with the next paragraph. But it also, what are the things? First Timothy two b says, teach and urge these things. So what are these things? That prompted me as a student of God's word to go back and say, alright, if he's saying teach and urge these things, he's probably told us what it is in the text.
22:35 So, I went back looking for imperative verbs. If it's not imperative verbs, things that carry an imperative. You know, it's something for grammar nerds, excuse me. This is the way this is. You go back and say, what did he command?
22:47 What did he urge? What did he want? And I'm gonna share some of them. I won't share all of them, but look at this. This is how many of them there have been so far in Timothy.
22:56 Teach and urge these things, okay? So I'm not gonna read every single one of them. This is double spaced. If you want a copy of this afterwards, I have it right here. There's one of you that comes up afterwards.
23:04 I want a copy of that. Here's your copy and you can make copies for anybody else. Do not don't pay attention to myths and aimless genealogies which give rise to speculation rather than furthering the administration of God which is by faith. Right off the bat, he says that, fight the good fight, Timothy. Carry the message of the cross forward.
23:26 Go with the gospel. Keep faith and a good conscience. Content and conduct already right there at the beginning which some have rejected and they've suffered a shipwreck in regard to their faith because they rejected the faith and good conscience. I urge that in treaties and prayers and petitions and Thanksgiving should be made for all men. So, it really does matter.
23:50 All people matter to God and Paul is saying, don't forget that Timothy. Don't play favorites. I want men in every place to pray, lifting up holy hands without wrath in their hearts, without dissension in the ranks. Let a woman learn. It's a third person command.
24:11 So, in Greek, they do this a lot more often than we do in English. When I'm speaking to you, I might say, Bob, copy this paper for somebody and that's a direct imperative for you but it's odd in English for me to say, Bob, Judy must do so and so. Because we don't do that but especially in the case of a father to his true son in the faith who is left as the pastor of this church or as the overseer, one of the overseers in this church. He's saying, listen, this is something that that group of people needs to do and you need to ensure that they've been taught correctly to do it. Does that make sense?
24:54 It's odd in English. I know it's odd in English and it really is odd to the American individualist that feels like, you know, every tub sits on its own bottom. That's not for me but in the position of elder or pastor, overseer, deacon even, It is a requirement that Paul is laying out there. Teach and urge these things. An overseer, this is the same thing.
25:13 Third person command for a group. Overseers need to be above reproach. They need to practice fidelity, be temperate, be prudent, be respectable, be hospitable, able to teach, not addicted to wine, not contentious, but instead, an overseer must be gentle, peaceable, free from the love of money. Must be one who manages his household well. An overseer, fathers, must keep his children under control with all dignity.
25:44 Not a new convert. Deacons, likewise, men of dignity, not double tongued, not addicted, not fond of sordid gain of money comes up a couple of different times. Overseers and deacons and then later for widows too. These folks must first be tested before you put somebody in a position of leadership. There needs to be some testing going on.
26:10 Timothy. Women are to be dignified, not gossips, temperate, faithful in all things. Deacons need to practice fidelity, be good managers of the household. He says again to Timothy, have nothing to do with worldly fables. Discipline yourself.
26:31 Exercise godliness. Discipline yourself. Train yourself in godliness. Prescribe and teach these things. He said it again.
26:39 Teach and urge these things. Teach and preach these things. Prescribe and teach these things. In speech, show yourself an example. In conduct, show yourself an example.
26:49 Content of the speech, conduct of the person. In love, show yourself an example. In faith, an example, in purity as an example. Give attention to the public reading of scripture which is what I'm doing right now. Give attention to exhortation.
27:05 Give attention to teaching. Don't neglect your spiritual gift but use it. Take pains with these things. Be absorbed in em so that your progress will be evident to all. Pay close attention to yourself.
27:19 That's conduct. Pay close attention to your teaching. That's content. Persevere in all things. In these things, not sharply rebuke an older man but treat him as you would a father, younger men, his brothers, older women, his mothers, younger women, his sisters, and all purity.
27:39 Honor widows who are widows indeed. Let the elders who rule be considered worthy of double honor especially those who work hard at preaching or teaching. Those who continue to sin and it's a possibility even in leadership that people would resist and do that. So, church discipline is a part of what he's been teaching Timothy. Let those who continue in sin or for those who continue in sin, rebuke them in the presence of all.
28:05 Maintain these principles though without bias. Don't have favoritism. Don't be partial. Don't lay hands on anyone too hastily to make them an elder or a pastor. Don't do anything out of a spirit of partiality.
28:21 Keep yourself free from sin. Conduct keeps on coming up and then, we get up to the message that I shared last week which was all of you who have to work. All of you who are under the yoke as bond servants regard their own masters as worthy of honor. Whether they are or they aren't. And then whether they're believers or not, you are to do all things as if unto the Lord.
28:45 That's where we get to before he says, teach and preach these things. So, that's what we've been looking at and that's a lot. That's a heavy list. When I see this, I think of this. Of course, I'm a baptist preacher.
28:57 So, any verse I see, I see the great commission in it but the great commission says, go therefore, make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the father and of the son and of the Holy Spirit, teaching them. Now, if I ask you to see the verbs here, the imperative there is go right off the bat, right? Kinda. It does carry imperatible force, sure. But if I were to ask you the verbs, you'd say, go, make disciples, baptize, and teach.
29:23 That's good. It goes beyond that and I'll say, yesterday morning at 08:52AM, I got this text. Can y'all see that from where you are? This is a text from anonymous. I won't tell you who it is but he's back east somewhere and he said, so my son got an A in Bible for the year.
29:42 He's going to a church school and an F in conduct. An A in Bible and an F in conduct. My next blurb right there says, Pharisee and I and I hit sin before I realized it and I said, I find myself being a Pharisee all the time. You know, trying to pedal backwards but when I sent it to Carl, I just said, well, somebody just sent me this. Carl sent back a picture of a Pharisee from the Jesus, the passion movie.
30:08 It is possible to know the Bible inside out, upside down, and backwards and still have an F in conduct and I think that Paul's letter to Timothy is saying, that's a lot of what's going on in your church, Timothy. People know this and they're going and they're straining the net on some of these verses and going to great extents on genealogy to prove their point but they're not acting like they're not acting about. Does that make sense? I like this woodcut. It's one of my favorite images that's ever hit that screen up there.
30:38 There's Old Testament and there's New Testament. Old Testament certainly is necessary. Do you remember Pilgrim's Progress? Have you all read Bunions Pilgrim's Progress? Christian, he's walking along the road and all of a sudden, he is waylaid.
30:53 Wham, over the head, knocked down, and then as he starts to get up, wham, he's knocked over the head again. And then, he's picked up, scooped up. Right here, it shows Jesus is scooping him up and he goes, what just happened to me? And he said, that was Moses. And he hit you over the head with the law and no man stands.
31:15 Not one of us stands under the scrutiny of the law. But Jesus is there. He stood under the scrutiny of law and was without sin and because he was without sin, he had a perfect record that he could sacrifice on our behalf for all who believe and that Christian represents those who have believed. The next thing in the great commission is teaching them what? To observe all that I've commanded.
31:46 Some versions say, teaching them to obey all that I've commanded you. I think that makes the message even more clear. It is not just going, making disciples by baptizing and teaching content. It is about showing them proper Christian conduct. Allowing the spirit of God to live in and through you and behold, I'm with you always even to the end of the age.
32:10 Christ is going to empower and do that. Teaching them to obey all that I have commanded. So, teaching us these things. Back to Paul talking to Timothy, teaching us these things. If anyone, if there is anyone who teaches a different doctrine.
32:24 Now, what does he say in Galatians? In Galatians one eight nine, he says, if anybody teaches or anybody preaches a different gospel than that which we have already shared with you, the message of the cross which I just explained. If anybody shares with you a different gospel, let him be anathema, cast out, completely separated from God and man. If anyone teaches a different doctrine, Paul says here, and does not agree with the sound words of our Lord Jesus Christ, Paul definitely saw what he was teaching as being in the in the complete and total within the traditions of what Jesus had established. If anyone teaches a different doctrine and does not agree with the sound words of our Lord Jesus Christ and the teaching that accords with godliness, he's puffed up and conceit and he understands nothing.
33:14 What does Paul say that knowledge does in first Corinthians? It puffs up and so if you get so comfortable in what you know but you're not practicing it, it's really easy to become puffed up with conceit. If anyone teaches a different doctrine, doesn't agree with the sound words, he's puffed up with conceit and he understands nothing. That person has an unhealthy craving for controversy. Now, as we read the Bible, sometimes my job is to take it from first century to twenty first century and say, okay, so this is what they used to do and this is how we are today.
33:51 Has anybody seen anyone with an unhealthy craving for controversy in the last, I don't know, week? Yeah, this is so relevant. If anybody doesn't agree with sound doctrine, he has a unhealthy craving for controversy and for quarrels about words. Have we seen both sides of any issue? Let's say legalism and license like we always do.
34:17 Let's say, political spectrum right and left. Each side reads the Bible and wants it to be their way. So, they'll bend those words and they'll quarrel over what they mean and it does this with the Bible. We also do it over the constitution. What I believe is right, therefore, the constitution must agree with me.
34:39 What I believe is wrong is wrong. I have to figure out a way to make this document say that. He's telling him to stick with what it actually says. The plainest meaning of the text. For quarrels about words and those quarrels about words produce envy.
34:59 That's jealousy. They produce dissension. Oh my goodness. Dissension means a pulling apart, a rending of that which was whole. Now, it is separated.
35:12 Have we seen a more polarized time? I can't think of one. But this was producing the same thing. It's not something that's new. It's been around forever and the Bible does speak to it.
35:23 So, which produce envy, dissension, slander. Oh, that now, not just do we disagree with one another but we're going to speak ugly and throw grenades across at the other side and speak mean of other folk because of our unhealthy craving for controversy. For evil suspicions, oh, it's so easy, so easy to question other people's motivations. Do you agree with that? Oh, they did that because such and such.
35:53 Most of what we do in life, I think it's stumbling along trying to get through. And I think most people are that way. I love to say every woe is intentional about what they do but I don't think that's the case. I want to be more intentional about being godly. One of the reasons, I don't want to be questioning other people's motives but taking what they say at face value.
36:15 Evil suspicions and constant friction among people who are depraved in mind and deprived of the truth. Constant friction. Sounds like today to me. Depraved in mind, deprived of the truth. So, Paul is speaking relevant words to us but he's speaking them directly to Timothy and then this comes in and this is where we introduce not a new subject.
36:38 It's the same subject. He's hit it several times already. Imagining that godliness is a means of game. So, he's not talking about the broad political spectrum at large. He's talking about church life.
36:50 In the church life, these people that are all over one side or the other and then, imagining that godliness is a means of gain. I I I say often the prosperity gospel comes up a lot in scripture. It's not affirming the prosperity gospel. Every time I mention it, I say, prosperity gospel is hogwash. It's hogwash.
37:12 God does want to bless his children. God does not guarantee how he will bless. He does not set up a system by which you are twisting his arm into fulfilling what you want. He doesn't do that and we don't see it in scripture. Imagining that godliness is a means of gain.
37:32 Then, he says, but godliness with contentment is great gain. Godliness with contentment is great gain. For we brought nothing into this world and we can take nothing out of it. Does that sound like Job? Yeah, that's the oldest.
37:45 We think, the oldest recorded book of scripture is Job. We brought nothing into this world. We take nothing. Can't take anything out of it. Carl used a slide on Monday night of a hearse pulling a U Haul.
37:58 Don't work that way. You can't take it with you and I had a little kid come up afterwards after the sermon this morning and he said, you can't take it with you and it's going to burn up anyway. But if we have food and clothing with these, we will be content. So let's rewind for just a second. Rewinding through that, through that, through that, through that.
38:21 Back to this. Imagining that godliness is a means of gain. So, in this church at this time, we don't know exactly what all of their arguments were but we can see there were some troubles with people who were preaching a theology of prosperity and financial gain. We could see that. We can see that there was some trouble among widows and who qualified, classified.
38:45 There was some struggle about people actually being holy instead of just knowing the Bible. Imagining that godliness is a means of gain. Is contrasted directly with but godliness with contentment is great gain. Do you get that that's true? Those are two different things, completely different things.
39:09 Pretending to be godly or putting forth a certain type of godliness but denying the power therein. People are seeking. Have you anybody in mind? Television, radio, books that is promoting a theology of prosperity. And they are making a killing off of.
39:35 Are you with me? That's not right. Godliness is not a means of gain. But godliness with contentment is great gain. He follows it up saying, we're not going to take anything out of this world anyway and so, just stick to what it says, Timothy.
39:53 Preach it and teach it. Care about God. Love him. Teaching them to obey all that I commanded you. What did Jesus command?
40:03 A new commandment I give to you not as the world gives but I give you this commandment that you love one another. Just as I have loved you, you love one another. That kind of godliness and being content with that, that's great gain. I think of this. This rattles around in my head all the time.
40:19 Godliness with contentment is great gain. It is a cure for covetousness to know that godliness with contentment being content. It speaks to us in our society as a whole and it speaks to us in particular in this place. But if we have food and clothing with these, we'll be content. Now, right here, I did have a slide and I took it out this morning.
40:42 Have you ever heard of Maslow's hierarchy of needs? Any of y'all who've ever done any psych psychological or psychiatric type work, you know, Maslow's hierarchy of needs is something we list and the very basic is food and shelter, clothing. There are a few others listed on some list, but it builds up to self actualization. Creativity, wanting to be heard, all of these things. And there's some benefit I think in looking into that but Paul is saying, be content with the absolute bottom level.
41:14 Godliness in these things, recognizing and being thankful for the basics that you have been given It's great gain to hold on to that. I think that there's more to it than that. I that's why I took the slide out but it's still something that everybody thinks of. Oh, Maslov's hierarchy of needs. This is the way we need to do ministry.
41:32 That's not a ministry model. Paul tells us the ministry model right here. Bring it down to keep on going forward. Keep on teaching these things. Keep on paying attention to what it says.
41:43 Keep your conduct. Godly. And be content. Thank you. In all circumstances.
41:52 And then the but there. But those who desire to be rich. Those who desire to be rich fall into temptation. Now, is it a sin to be tempted? No.
42:07 Thank you. I'm glad that y'all know that. I was talking to a guy in town who is he's actually a Jewish therapist and he said, is it a sin in Christianity to be tempted? And he said, I thought I know the answer to this but will you answer this? And there's another pastor, friend said, no.
42:27 No. It's not a sin to be tempted because the Bible directly says and Jesus was completely without sin. Jesus was tempted in all the ways that were tempted yet he was without sin. So, no, it is not a sin to be tempted. Jewish therapist was saying, I'm having a lot of people lately that are coming in saying, I've got this temptation to do so and so.
42:49 I've got this temptation to do so and so and it is to the point where they're almost suicidal over it. It is not a sin to be tempted and I'm going to use a little bit of wisdom from my grandmother right here. I asked for prayer for her in the first service. She is 87 and she's beginning to fade both physically and mentally. So, she's going into sundowners and it's a difficult time for her and for the family.
43:13 So, I want you to pray for but this is her words of wisdom from way back and repeatedly, she was my Sunday school teacher for a long, long time. You can't stop a bird from flying over your head,
43:24 Speaker 2but you can keep it
43:25 Speaker 1from building a nest in your hair. So if you are tempted, that is not a sin, but if you entertain that temptation, you will eventually fall, and that will be a bird in your hair, alright? You can't stop a bird from flying over your head but you can't keep it from building a nest in your hair. He's saying that those who desire to be rich fall into temptation. Temptation is not a sin but a snare has been set.
43:49 It's been set by the evil one. It's been set by the devil. Our flesh goes after it too. The snare is a trap that more money will do. More money will be the thing that makes it all better.
44:02 But those who desire to be rich fall into a temptation into a snare, into many senseless and harmful desires. Oh my. Our system is built on senseless and harmful desires. Do you all know that? The world system I should say.
44:22 Into many senseless and harmful desires that plunge people into ruin and destruction. The constant need for more, more, more is not good for us and Paul knew that and he wanted Timothy to know it for sure and to preach it and to teach it and I stand in that line of continuing to do so. Senseless and harmful desires that plunge people into ruined instruction for the love of money, not money but the love of money. The love of money is a root of all kinds of evil. This has been misquoted forever and ever.
44:54 Money is the root of all evil. Money is the root of all evil. You hear it all the time. No, no, no, no, no. Money can be used.
44:58 It's a neutral. It's completely neutral. It can be used for good. It can be used for bad. The love of money taking the place of the love of God or love for God is a root of all kinds of evil.
45:15 I think also of inventors of new ways to do evil. There are people who are constantly trying to come up with a quick way to make a buck, quick way to make a buck and it takes over any security that one might find in Christ alone. So, the love of money is a root of all kinds of evils. Remember, he said this already about both the overseers earlier and then the deacons in 380 says, they should not be greedy for dishonest gain. The temptation is, well, if I do things right, I won't make as much as if I do things wrong.
45:52 And so, I'm going to do this wrong and end up winning and I can give the rest of that money to the church. They must hold the mystery of the faith with a clear conscience. That is right up against not greedy for dishonest gain. It's through this craving, the love of money. It's through this craving that some have wandered away from the faith and it might be that Alexander and Hymenaeus, the guy he mentions in the very beginning of this, that might have been what was going on with them.
46:19 They were teaching a dishonest doctrine to gain from the sheep. They were bad shepherds. It's through this craving that some had wandered away from the faith and they have pierced themselves with many pangs. So, when Paul says to him, the aim of our charge, Timothy, is a sincere faith. It's love that issues from a sincere faith, a good conscience.
46:48 When he says that at the beginning and then he points out different ways, he said, if you pay attention to these things, you will save yourself and your hearers. It's constant instruction and honestly, it's it's a lot of instruction. It really is a lot of this imperative but he's saying, stick to these things, hold them, and live them out because if you don't, you're going to pierce yourself with many pangs and there are others who have already fallen to that. That's the last slide. That's it.
47:21 We've still got time. I wanted it to land. I think in our society, we have glorified preparation for and we've glorified money to the point that that's where we find our security. And I don't think we can do that. I don't think we should do that.
47:39 I don't want to do. So now we're going take up another offering. No, I'm totally kidding. Totally joking. Sorry.
47:48 Sorry. I couldn't resist. Sorry.
47:55 Speaker 2Judy, would you come on up?
47:59 Speaker 1Would you pray with me? Would you stand? We're going to sing one more song. God almighty, I I do pray that you are our all in all that we do trust you. There are certainly principles in the Bible about saving and taking care of the our future lord but I think the overarching principle of scripture is lean holy on God almighty through Jesus Christ.
48:22 I pray lord that you would keep us right in the center of your will, right in exactly the way you would have us be. But lord that you would take control In Jesus name, I pray for your provision, for your supply. Amen. Before you start playing, I knew there's one more thing I was forgetting. The illustration this morning that came up, I was talking with a friend earlier in the week too and he said, that 1%, we hear the term, the one percenters, the one percenters, the 1% wealthiest in The United States are the ones that blah blah blah blah.
48:59 You hear it on the news whether you're watching the right or the left. You you hear it on the news and the one percenters is what they talk about but the gospel is a worldwide gospel. It is for the whole world. Go you therefore into all the world. And if you look at things as an American, you look at things and you go, what is the top 1% of the world as far as income is concerned?
49:24 $32,400 is the break. Dollars 32,400 is the break between 99% below and 1% above. So if you make $32,400 you are a one percenter. There's also a study I heard between services from a reliable source. He says, a British study about this, and up to about $30,000 people who make more money are happier.
49:50 The more money they make up to about $30,000 and then at 30,000, it starts going the other way. The more money you make, the worse off you feel. So, if you're thinking about that and you're thinking about the love that will not let you go, I say again, teaching them to obey all that I have commanded you, Jesus says, where your treasure is there, your heart will be also. So, God help us. In Jesus name, amen.
50:16 Now, Scott, would you come on up and we're going to sing, oh love that will not let me go. If you know this one, in this tune, sing loud.
50:25 Speaker 2Help his wavering voice.
52:30 Speaker 1So, considering whether you have food and clothing, consider this, whether you eat or drink or whatever it is that you do, do it all for the glory of God from first Corinthians 10. In Jesus name, lord, I ask that you would bless and that you would give us the conduct that matches the content, lord. Or if we make an A, let it be in conduct even if we struggle with the word. In Jesus name, would you use us to reflect your good gospel on the lost and dying world. Amen.
