Hebrews 13:18-25

the main passage for the sermon, read and expounded as the closing of the letter

18 Pray for us, for we are persuaded that we have a good conscience, desiring to live honorably in all things.

19 I strongly urge you to do this, that I may be restored to you sooner.

20 Now may the God of peace, who brought again from the dead the great shepherd of the sheep with the blood of an eternal covenant, our Lord Jesus,

21 make you complete in every good work to do his will, working in you that which is well pleasing in his sight, through Jesus Christ, to whom be the glory forever and ever. Amen.

22 But I exhort you, brothers, endure the word of exhortation; for I have written to you in few words.

23 Know that our brother Timothy has been freed, with whom, if he comes shortly, I will see you.

24 Greet all of your leaders and all the saints. The Italians greet you.

25 Grace be with you all. Amen.

Psalm 63

cited in the pastoral prayer before singing, the line about lips glorifying God because his love is better than life

1 God, you are my God. I will earnestly seek you. My soul thirsts for you. My flesh longs for you, in a dry and weary land, where there is no water.

2 So I have seen you in the sanctuary, watching your power and your glory.

3 Because your loving kindness is better than life, my lips shall praise you.

4 So I will bless you while I live. I will lift up my hands in your name.

5 My soul shall be satisfied as with the richest food. My mouth shall praise you with joyful lips,

6 when I remember you on my bed, and think about you in the night watches.

7 For you have been my help. I will rejoice in the shadow of your wings.

8 My soul stays close to you. Your right hand holds me up.

9 But those who seek my soul, to destroy it, shall go into the lower parts of the earth.

10 They shall be given over to the power of the sword. They shall be jackal food.

11 But the king shall rejoice in God. Everyone who swears by him will praise him, for the mouth of those who speak lies shall be silenced.

Recap

The message in order, in a few minutes of reading.

This message was the closing sermon in the church's walk through Hebrews, covering the final eight verses of the letter. Pastor Ray preached it on an unusual Sunday, with most of the congregation watching from home due to the early days of the COVID-19 pandemic. He traced three movements in the passage: an earnest plea for prayer, a magnificent Christ-centered blessing, and a brief personal sign-off from the writer.

What was said

Pastor Ray started with the single word that opens the plea: "pray." He slowed down to give the Greek word its full weight, pointing out that it literally means to interact with the Lord by exchanging your own wishes and ideas for His. That is not a passive or formal act. It is continuous communication aimed at replacing human thinking with God's. He noted that the same congregation being told to obey its leaders was also being told to pray for them, and that the two commands are closely linked.

The writers of Hebrews then ask for prayer on their own behalf, saying they are persuaded they have a good conscience and desire to conduct themselves honorably in all things. Pastor Ray read "honorably" from the Greek and pointed out that the underlying idea is something winsomely attractive, not merely rule-following. He connected that directly to the church's own situation, wanting to handle a difficult week in a way that did not bring unnecessary criticism and that remained genuinely helpful to people on every side.

The specific thing the writers wanted prayer for was reunion. They wanted to be restored to the people they were writing to, and they asked the congregation to pray that it would happen sooner. Pastor Ray noted how naturally that request mapped onto the congregation's own moment, with most people scattered in homes and hoping to be together again soon.

The blessing at the center of the closing paragraph is what Pastor Ray called the magnificent blessing, one of the finest benedictions in the New Testament. He walked through six dictionary definitions of the Greek word for peace, from peace of mind to national tranquility to the Messiah's shalom, landing on the one he found most fitting: the tranquil state of a soul assured of its salvation through Christ, fearing nothing from God and content with its earthly lot of whatever sort that is. He tied that definition directly to the name God is given in the blessing, the God of peace.

The blessing then describes who this God is. He is the one who brought up from the dead the great shepherd of the sheep, through the blood of the eternal covenant. Pastor Ray pointed out that this is precisely what the entire letter has been arguing, that Jesus is better, that the new covenant surpasses the old, and that the blood of bulls and goats never satisfied what Jesus' blood accomplished permanently. The blessing then asks that this God equip believers in every good thing to do His will, working in them what is pleasing in His sight through Jesus Christ.

Pastor Ray spent time on the phrase "to whom be the glory forever and ever," turning the preposition several ways. To Jesus the glory, for Jesus the glory, in Jesus the glory, by Jesus the glory, with Jesus the glory. He wanted the congregation to feel the weight of it rather than let it slide past as a familiar closing formula. He said that any glory any believer will ever experience will be in union with Christ, not on their own merits.

The sermon closed with a note on who wrote Hebrews. Pastor Ray said he believes it was Priscilla, likely together with Aquila, pointing to the plural voice in the letter, the mention of Timothy's release, and the pattern of Priscilla's name appearing first in five of the seven New Testament references to the couple. He held the view with some openness, citing the old line that only God knows for certain who wrote it. The final word of the letter is grace, and he ended there: grace as God leaning toward people with unmerited favor, through the blood of the eternal covenant, offered to everyone.

Doing a Bible study?

Here is a guide we have prepared for you: the passages in order, questions for the group, and room to write.

  1. Pastor Ray described prayer as 'switching your human wishes and ideas for God's wishes as He imparts to you faith.' What is the difference between that kind of prayer and simply telling God what you want Him to do?
  2. The writer of Hebrews asked the church to pray specifically that they could be restored to one another sooner. What does it tell us about the Christian life that even faithful leaders needed the prayers of the people they served?

3:41 Speaker 3Yes. So, Monday night is online only. Online only just like we're doing this morning. So no meal, not gathering. However, you can catch us online, and we will begin at six tomorrow.
3:59 Speaker 1With music tomorrow.
4:00 Speaker 3With music at six and a message. So please tune in via Facebook.
4:05 Speaker 1Message from Proverbs.
4:07 Speaker 3We're in Proverbs. Last week on Proverbs on the topic of patience.
4:13 Speaker 1Alright. So there that's that. Monday night, 06:00. No meal as far as we're concerned but music at six and then message after that from Proverbs. No, Awana tomorrow night.
4:24 Awana's already off for the spring break anyway. So, the next three weeks, there'll be no Awana. There will be no on the middle school, high school boys, and girls studies today and for the next two weeks because of spring break and I think that precept has decided to not go. We are leaving it up to any smaller groups that are meeting in the church whether they want to or not. Preset does have several people who have said that they will not be attending because of compromised immune systems and whatever.
4:54 So, we are probably not doing that one and I'll leave this one up to the Connells. And I imagine that that probably will still go on, but I'm not positive. So checking with her at that number would be great. (703) 987-5273. Everybody is gonna just be listening to it.
5:14 Turning Point is still carrying on business as usual. As far as I know, our campaign for the baby bottles is still happening the same way. Community groups are kind of an organic thing. And if you would talk to your community group leader, it would
5:28 Speaker 2be really nice to know whether or not they're doing it, if so, where they are. But we don't have an accurate list at this point of who's meeting and when and why. That's just the
5:38 Speaker 1way it is right now. Nursery volunteers are not needed this morning. No volunteers there. We did that one already. I think that's it.
5:45 If there were any other announcements, Diane would be looking at me and tell me, Diane. I can't think. Can't think of any new announcements. We are all in a holding pattern here. I think that's obvious.
5:54 We're trying to figure out how to do and what to do and to both be under the authorities that be the city is asking for any groups of 100 people or more to be to to to not happen. And so we don't have that many here this morning. Hopefully, there are plenty of y'all listening online. But we're just listening out and seeing how this how to ride this thing out. We are attempting to not overwhelm the medical system.
6:22 As of yet, we have cases close by, but not right here in town that we know of for sure. So we're just gonna carry on just like this is a normal Sunday. Y'all greet one another where you are in your households. You comment online if you want. Yeah, comment online if you want to.
6:38 Oh, that's opening up a can of worms. I think that that's it but we're going to go on with the song service and just keep calm and carry on. If you're here in the room, would you would you stand? If you're at home and you wanna stand, join in. Feel funny to say
6:52 Speaker 2Your love is a grating diamond bursting inside us we cannot contain. Your love will surely come fine. Paradigm hearts bursting inside us, we cannot contain Your love will surely come find us. Pleasing wildfire singing your name. God, sweet of mine.
8:52 Hail surrender to your design. May this over rain that you God of mercy, sweet love of mine. Hailed surrender to your
10:05 Speaker 3God, thank you for the gift of music that we can praise you. You say in Psalm 63, because your love is better than life, my lips will glorify you. And and so we do. We do today in this little room right here in our online gathering, but we want to offer you our our heart. We wanna offer you our praise.
10:28 We want to offer you that praise because, really, you deserve it and you're worthy of it, and you're on the throne. You truly are. And so as we sing to you, Lord, may you may you open our hearts even further.
10:45 Speaker 1Amen.
10:46 Speaker 3And would the word today would you would you make room for the word today that it would have a place in our heart as well? In Jesus' name. Amen. Amen.
11:07 Speaker 2I lean not. I lean not on my own understanding. My life is in the hands of a maker of yet. I lean not on my own understanding. My life is in the hands of the maker of air.
11:32 I give it, old me, God. Trusting that you make something beautiful I understanding, my life is in the hands of the maker of hair. I'll lean not on my own understanding, of me. Give it all in you, God. Trusting that you make something beautiful out of me and I will climb.
12:53 And I will climb this mountain with my hands. Wide open, I will climb mountain with my hands wide. Open, I will climb this mountain with my hands wide. Open, I will climb this mountain with my hands wide. Nothing I hold on to.
13:20 Nothing I hold on to. Nothing I hold on to. There's nothing I hold
13:28 Speaker 3There's nothing I hold
13:30 Speaker 2on on to. To.
13:31 Speaker 3There's nothing
13:32 Speaker 2I hold on to. There's nothing I hold on to. There's nothing I hold on to.
13:59 Speaker 1To
14:11 Speaker 2of in Jesus.
14:42 Speaker 3That verse comes right out of Proverbs three, five, and six. Trust in the Lord with all your heart and do not lean on your own understanding. In all your ways, acknowledge him, and he will make your path straight. Lord, may it be so.
15:06 Speaker 2This is my prayer. This is my prayer in the desert. And all that's within me feels dry. This is my prayer in my hunger need. My God is a God who provides.
15:28 And this is my prayer in a fire. Weakness or trial or pain, there is a faith proving more worth than gold. Refine me, oh Lord, through the flames. And I will bring praise. I will bring praise.
15:52 I will bring praise. No weapon formed against the shall A prayer in the battle and this is my prayer in the battle. The triumph is still on its way. I am a conqueror and coer with Christ. Firm on his promise, I'll stand.
16:36 Let's bring praise. And I will bring praise, I will bring praise, no weapon formed against me shall remain. I will rejoice, rejoice, I will declare God is my victory and he is here. And all my life in every season All my life in every season You are still God I have a reason to sing I have a reason to worship. That's so good.
17:23 Let's sing that again. All my life. All my life in every season you are still God. I have a reason to sing. I have a reason to worship.
17:43 Let's bring praise. I will bring praise. I will bring praise. No weapon formed against me shall be made. I will rejoice.
17:56 I will be there. God is my victory and he is here. Our prayer in the harvest. This is my prayer in the harvest when favor and providence flow. I know I'm filled to be emptied again.
18:28 The seed I received I will sow
18:43 Speaker 1Amen. Y'all can have a seat. And I'm not inviting the frontline team. Actually, I'm gonna invite Diane if you would. Would you grab that basket?
18:52 There is an offering basket that'll be coming around for the few of you that are here. But if you wanna learn how to do that online, maybe you could do that now. It's a time that we worship through giving. So, would you pray with me? God, we thank you for all that you are doing this morning.
19:12 Oh, the snow this morning. What a beauty. Amazing how you just overflow. Lord, it's a reminder and we can look at the things that you are doing for us, lord, and you're doing in us and you're doing all around us and we can look at em and go, why? Why?
19:29 Or we can say, wow. Lord, this is amazing. Absolutely amazing. Amen. It's just amazing and you are God.
19:37 You are good and we love you and we wanna see your gospel advance. Lord, use us in whatever way you would see fit and use these offerings in whatever way you would see fit to take your gospel to the very ends of the earth and to offer your helping hand of encouragement and mercy and sustenance to those lord who needed and will be needed. It. In Jesus name, we ask you that you would. Uh-huh.
20:04 Lord, show yourself through us to the world that does not know what's going on. Lord, may we always put our trust in you and thank you for the opportunity to repuse it, represent you here on Earth. Amen. Equip us lord to do your will and your work, in your way this morning. In Jesus name, amen.
20:26 Amen. Amen.
20:38 Speaker 2I meet with you and my soul sings out as your word throws down far away. I sing to you and my heart cries holy, held in duly upon the warning. My obedience in you look all the day long. I won't be shaken by drought or storm. A beast that passes understanding is my song, my song, my hope is in you, Lord.
21:28 I wait for you and my soul finds rest And my selfishness, you show me grace. I worship you. And my heart cries glory. I've been you here, I'm the reward here. My obedience in you, Lord, all the day long.
22:00 I won't be shaken by hand drown or stone. Beast that bounces understanding is my song now. My hope is in you alone and I'll wait on you. I'll on you. You were my prayer I feel.
23:26 Speaker 1Amen. This is the time when children usually get to get a chance to get up and stretch. Do y'all want a chance to get up and stretch? Feel free. Yeah, stretch a little bit.
23:39 We are moving forward. We're just gonna go forward. Will that thing track with me, Josh? Thank you. Hebrews thirteen eighteen through 25.
23:50 Hebrews thirteen eighteen eighteen through 25 is where we are. So, we're just plotting on through. Last week, was this, one verse. We covered just one verse and I thought, oh, 17 kinda goes with eighteen and nineteen for some reason. I didn't use eighteen and nineteen last week but kind of found out this week why I didn't.
24:10 Here is this one. Obey your leaders and submit to them for they are keeping watch over your souls as those who will give an account. Let them do this with joy and not with grief for this would be unprofitable for you. That in itself was just kind of a hard one for me to deliver if you go back and look at it. It's pretty obvious that it's an uncomfortable thing because I am one of those who will give an account and so, I don't ever wanna run anybody away from the goodness of the grace of God.
24:43 I don't wanna ever run anybody away on either side of any issue. I wanna have the dialogue open but I also have to stand on the word of God and so that was what it comes down to obey your leaders and submit to them for they keep watch over your souls as those who will give an account. We have to say what it says. We have to live what it says and it's great when we can do that with joy. I'm not the least bit upset.
25:09 I'm not the least bit afraid right here this morning. I'm filled with joy. I woke up excited this morning about coming in. I woke up excited about getting that Jeep out of the the snowbank that it was parked in and I am not grieving over this at all. I'm looking forward to the opportunity what God is gonna do with everything else that's going on in world and kinda mass hysteria, just let's keep going.
25:32 Let's keep going. We do have to go in a different route but let's keep going. Hebrews thirteen seventeen says that and Hebrews thirteen eighteen through 25 is this, it's an earnest plea to begin with. It's a magnificently Christ centered blessing and then it's personal greetings from afar. That's what the writer of Hebrews was sending personal greetings because it's the very end of the letter.
26:00 Now, it's 13 chapters long. Hebrews is 13 chapters long and as we've been going through it, we're only taking a few verses at a time, a paragraph at a time but the way that this message normally would have been delivered in the first century is all of it at once. Can you imagine just all of Hebrews dumped in your lap at once? I'm going to ask you to read it again this week because we've covered it as a church. It's so good.
26:24 It's so good to just have it wash over you especially after you've kind of gone through it little by little. It'd be a good idea and then the very last word. So, this last word, verse 25 is the last word from the writer of Hebrews or writers of Hebrews to those first century Jewish background believers encouraging them to persevere. The main thing about this is the centrality of Christ, the new covenant, and persevering in that, not being tempted to fall away. So, here's the earnest plea.
26:54 This is where we'll start off. Earnest plea starts off like this. I think these things are not quite in the right order there, Josh but I could be wrong but is pray. That's what it is. Pray.
27:09 Pray is the way it starts off and I think that sometimes, we just skip over church words and I know pray is a word we use all the time but look at what it means. Prostuch is a present imperative middle, passive, second person plural for the two grammar nerds in the room. It means y'all be praying. Y'all be praying or y'all be praying for or y'all be offering prayer. Y'all be praying but I want you to look at what that actually means, where it comes from.
27:39 Towards exchange and to wish poor. Process towards a leaning towards or an exchange to wish for or to pray. Literally, it is to interact with the Lord by switching your human wishes and ideas for his wishes as he imparts to you faith. This is straight dictionary definition. I didn't make it up for convenience.
28:03 This is what it means. Literally, it is to interact with the Lord by switching your human wishes or ideas or his wishes. Hearts, faith, divine persuasion. When I said obey your leaders last week, the word persuade, be persuaded, or be being persuaded, that's where that comes from. Accordingly, in the New Testament, praying is closely and almost always interconnected with faith.
28:30 It's a it is continuous communication with God that he would show you his way instead of you just telling him your way. That's prayer. So, we've only got one word into this so far. Pray. Here we go.
28:49 Pray for us. Pray for us. Now, this is the writer of Hebrews and I have been saying writer or writers. I've been going and correcting myself every time that I say the writer of Hebrews or writers. I've been trying to say that throughout.
29:01 This is the last sermon we're doing on. I tell you, I told you, I tell you who I think it is at the end of it. So, we're gonna do that later on but pray for us, the writer or writers of Hebrews are writing to a group of people that were well known to them. I believe, a church that they had helped to establish and the church probably that might have met in their house and the network of house churches that are all around which is great because we are right now a place where people usually meet represented by a bunch of house churches all over everywhere right now. Pray for us, the ones in leadership in the in the in the church here, I could say, but pray for us in this case was for the writer or writers of Hebrews for we are sure that we have a good conscience.
29:45 It's plural. Some people say that's the literary plural or the royal plural. I think it's an actual plural. There are two people writing the letter, I believe. At least, we pray for us for we are sure that we have a good conscience.
29:59 Actually, the we are sure there is we are persuaded. It's exactly the same. Sometimes, you don't get plays on words if they're not the same word. Obey your leaders is this, same word. It is, obey your leaders.
30:13 Y'all be being persuaded and we are persuaded. We are persuaded that we have a good conscience. We're persuaded that we are doing the right thing. It was a hard call this week by the way to say what we're gonna do for church. We don't wanna forsake the assembling of ourselves together but we also wanna submit ourselves to the government.
30:34 We're trying to figure out how to do both of those things and we'll go forward and we will prayerfully meet as a staff and as elders and we'll figure that out going forward but we're sure that we have a good conscience. We have a slight crowd here. Hopefully, there are more of you out there and we'll listen later on but this writer or writers of Hebrews, if they're saying, pray for us for we're sure that we have a good conscience. It sounds like they might be defending themselves a little bit. What have they said?
31:02 Don't fall for various or strange teachings. Stick to Jesus. Don't go back to the old covenant rituals. Stick to the new covenant. Don't go back to that.
31:13 So, while these leaders are away, backed away from this church that they've been raising up and they know the other leaders. They know em. They said, obey your leaders. They said, respect the leaders that you had in the past but there are some people among you who are trying to lead you astray. Don't let that happen.
31:32 Pray for us for we're sure that we have a good conscience and everything that we've written so far in Hebrews. I'm positive about this. We're good with God about this. We're completely persuaded and we are desiring to conduct ourselves honorably. Honorably means, we're desiring to conduct ourselves in a good way, an honorable way, a noble way but the dictionary definition I didn't put in here this time is is winsomely attractive.
32:02 That's what we want to be. We want, we desire to be winsomely attractive to people in both ditches, to people who don't get it at all, to people who don't know God at all, to people who don't know what's going on. We want to be helpful and we want to have a good conscience in doing so. We won't sacrifice on the word. We have to say what it says but we want to conduct ourselves in our daily practice honorably.
32:27 Now, this could be a weed that is saying, we, I want this and I I know y'all want it too. Could be that but I think that it is ourselves honorably. It's the writers of Hebrews. So, desiring to conduct ourselves honorably how? In all things, in everything that they do.
32:44 There was persecution at this time. I think that it was probably written sixty six, sixty seven AD before the fall of the temple. It's I'm pretty sure of that. These folks, whoever's writing this back are writing it to a group of people that they know and know well, knew their leaders before, they know people are trying to lead them astray. Pray for us for we're sure we have a good conscience.
33:09 We haven't said anything out of bounds. We desire to conduct ourselves honorably in all things and in the twenty first century, I can say that's what we're doing too. We're going forward proceeding as best we can. We wanna do so in a way that does not bring fire. Does that make sense?
33:26 Christians have been blamed for lots of stuff throughout the ages. If you go back through church history, you know, just before this, Nero blamed him for starting the fire in Rome. Just so happened that he built his palace on top of the part that was burned but hey, he blamed the Christians and proverbially, he fiddled while it burned. I urge you. This is an exhortation.
33:52 The whole letter is actually an exhortation. I believe it's a sermon. I believe it's one sermon and I urge you, it goes from the we to the eye there but I urge you all the more. We have heard all the more. Jesus is so much better than the angels.
34:08 So much the more, all the more as you see the day approaching. It's a common theme. All the more. To do this, be putting it into action. I urge you to do this.
34:19 What? Pray for us. Really be praying for us. Don't let thinking about the situation and trying to figure it out take the place of praying. Interchange your ideas and your wishes for God's ideas and God's wishes.
34:36 The church historically has done very well under persecution and in difficult times. Times. So, do not neglect to pray. Pray for us. For we're sure we have a good conscience desire to conduct ourselves honorably in all things and I urge you all the more to pray for us.
34:54 Do this in the first century and in the twenty first century so that I may be restored to you sooner. Ain't that crazy? How this lines up? This person was probably not exiled but wanted to return and what their prayer was is I want to get back to you. We'll see that in a few minutes.
35:13 I want to get back to you but as I'm trying to get back to you, pray for us. Pray for us and pray specifically this that we can get together again soon. Amen. That's what we're praying for. First century, twenty first century.
35:29 Same prayer. Lines up to me just beautifully. Meeting in homes and small gatherings like I said. So, that's the earnest plea. That's the first part.
35:40 We've got two other parts and a very last word. The magnificent blessing. This is one of the best benedictions in the New Testament. For my taste, I think this high crystallogical blessing is wonderful but it also has a component about how we apply it to our lives. So, this is a magnificent blessing.
36:00 It's what I call it magnificently Christ centered blessing and here we go. Now, It's a paragraph unto itself. It's a blessing unto itself and now may the God of peace. Another word we use all the time. Got a lot of meanings.
36:18 I'm gonna give you the straight dictionary definition for six of them, okay? Six of em. The first one is just straight dictionary definition from the lexicon is peace or peace of mind. Irene, Irene, the name Irene comes from peace. Irenic is peaceful.
36:38 Irene or Irene's, peace or peace of mind. An invocation of peace is a common Jewish farewell. That's what they normally said and at the end of letters, it was often peace be with you. That sort of thing as a farewell. In in the Hebrewistic sense of the health of an individual.
36:57 So, specifically, as health is concerned, peace. Peace be with you. May your goings be well. So, Iran is peace. A state of national tranquility.
37:10 That's what we most often probably think of when we hit peace. An exemption from the rage and havoc of war. This is Thayer's lex icon. It's a Greek lexicon. So, exemption from the rage and havoc of war.
37:24 Second is peace between individuals. We talk about that a lot. To have peace with God and individuals is what we look for. In fact, loving God and loving people is the motto of this church. Peace with between individuals to have harmony and concord and we know in our land today that it's incredibly polarized and it was at this time and what we are trying to do is bring harmony and concord and peace and bring people towards God's ideas not their own ideas because our own ideas are flawed.
37:56 The third one is, after the Hebrew, I don't know that word. Don't know how to say that word but that's the Hebrew word right there and it means security, safety, prosperity, or felicity and if you think about it, make sense because peace and harmony make and keep things safe and prosperous. This was during the Pax Romana. Y'all remember that the Pax Romana is the Roman peace. It was an enforced peace military.
38:23 A lot of people say that the age we're living in is the Pax Americana where it's an enforced peace but it's a a peace of some sorts. Safe and prosperous is the norm but it's not always the case and under the surface, there's less than that going on. So, let's go to the fourth definition. Specifically, it is the Messiah's shalom. The Messiah's peace which ties right into the fifth definition.
38:49 According to a conception that is distinctly peculiar to Christianity, it is the tranquil state of a soul assured of its salvation. Through Christ and so, fearing nothing from God and content with its earthly lot of whatever sort that is. Ain't that beautiful? I like definition number five and I think that that's what we're looking at here in the twenty first century there in the first century and then closing off definition six is of the blessed state of the devout and upright after death. Paul says, to live as Christ, to die as gain when Paul was wondering about which would be better, he said, it would be better for me to go and be with Christ but for you, for you, I will remain and so that's the idea there is there's a peace, the blessed state of the rest, and peace of the devout and upright after their death.
39:47 Now, may the God of peace like that. May that God, almighty God. Now, the God of peace and then it's going to describe who he is, who brought up from the dead, the great shepherd of the sheep, capital S, that's Jesus. Now, may the God of peace who brought up from the dead this great shepherd of the sheep through the blood of the eternal covenant. What is this book been about?
40:10 It's been about the centrality of Jesus. The difficult road that he followed as a son invites us into. He's not just a servant. He's a servant who is a son and he invites us into that road. He's the great shepherd of the sheep and he's asking his sheep to follow and it says, through the blood of the eternal covenant, not the old covenant, not the blood of bulls and goats that never satisfied, not any of those other sacrifices that pointed to him in the new covenant but the blood of the eternal covenant.
40:47 Jesus is the same yesterday, today, and forever. Does not matter where you are or how you're meeting. Now, may the God of peace who brought up from the dead, the great shepherd of the sheep through the blood of the eternal covenant. That's Jesus. Even Jesus our lord, make it explicit.
41:05 Now, may the God of peace and it describes who he is and then it says, may he equip you in every good thing to do his will. That's what we're looking for. What is it you would have me do in my situation today, lord? How may I bless you and others? How may I bless?
41:26 Show me what to do, lord, and I will do it. May the God of peace equip you in every good thing to do his will. Working in us all, that which is pleasing in his sight, There is a difference in being secure in Christ and being outside of Christ and wondering and hopeless. May we be able to take that peace and tranquility that we have. And offer it to others others in a way that makes a difference.
42:06 Working in us that which is pleasing in his sight through Jesus Christ. That's the only way. It's not through human wisdom. It's not through a winning personality. It is through Jesus Christ because he's the same yesterday, today, and forever.
42:20 No matter what society does, no matter what happens, Jesus is the same. He offers that salvation. He was offering it to them and he's offering it to us now and the sanctification that comes with it and hard times are good for sanctification. May the God of peace equip you in every good thing to do his will working in us that which is pleasing in sight through Jesus Christ to whom be the glory forever and ever. Sounds like a good place to end right here, doesn't it?
42:52 Well, there's another little paragraph I'm going to go through and one closing thought but don't let this just slide past you seeming like, well, that's a benediction of course. Oh, forever and ever, amen. It's fun to pause but don't don't let it don't let it slide past you. Think about it. Through Jesus Christ, the letter is about Jesus Christ, about his seat at the right hand of the father interceding for us right now.
43:19 About him holy, holy, holy, elevated. To whom? Now, the preposition for two can be two four in by or with. I want you to think about it all different ways, okay? To whom we give to Jesus the praise that he deserves, the glory, the fame that he deserves.
43:36 To Jesus be the glory forever and ever. Unto the end of the age, it says, unto the end of the ages. So, Jesus Christ, we give to you the glory. We give it to you. We hand it over.
43:51 You deserve it. We don't. If we've ever taken it, lord, forgive us. You are the one that deserves all praise and glory. For whom be the glory?
44:02 Any glory that exist is for him. That is why that the angels are singing, holy, holy, holy. The Lord God almighty for whom? Be the for whom is the glory. In whom be the glory.
44:18 If you are going to have any part in any heavenly glory, it will be in Christ. Union with Christ because you don't deserve it and I don't deserve it. Union with Christ is what it's about and in Christ, there is glory forever and ever. By whom? The glory.
44:39 The B in italics right there, the word B, they add that in italics to make it make sense. To him be the glory but by whom is the glory forever and ever. I think of the old song with Jesus in my boat, I can smile in the storm. You know that song? It's a Bible school song.
44:58 By whom be the glory forever? With whom be the glory forever and ever. Sit there and think about that for just a minute. God is good and though we do not understand his ways on this side, we will and there will be absolute glory forever and with him, we'll experience. And then, this this word transfers over from Hebrew and the Greek directly and then into English directly.
45:25 Amen. Amen. Amen. It means so be it. It's an affirmative statement of what has just been said.
45:32 So, this blessing, the magnificent blessing, benediction is this. Now, the God of peace who brought up the from the dead, the great shepherd of the sheep through the blood of the eternal covenant, even Jesus our lord, may he equip you in every good thing to do his will, working in us, that which is pleasing in his sight. God, would you do that? That's what I'm praying this morning. You would use your church to do what you want us to do to offer hope and help and love and sustenance, whatever you would have us do, lord.
46:06 I pray that you direct us. I thank you for the relationships between the pastors here in this little town. For Jimmy at Saint John's, for Eric at Cornerstone, for Ben at PCJH, for Jim and Aaron down at Gateway, for Brian over at Tribe for Inger at Shepherd of the Mountains for David Boddett Redeemer. For Allen at the Church of Christ. For Jeff, Flat Creek Community Church.
46:36 Lord, for all of these brothers and sisters in Christ. I pray lord that you would bless them exactly this way and equip them for every good thing to do your will working in all of us that which is pleasing in your sight through Jesus Christ to him be the glory forever and ever. Amen. Amen. And I think that's a magnificent blessing.
47:03 We're probably gonna hear that again at the end. The benediction. Greetings from afar. So, here we go into the last little sign off. This is pretty normal for a letter of this time too.
47:14 I urge you brother. Hold on a second. Yes. I urge you brother. I am still urging you.
47:22 It should say, it's been an urge since the very beginning. An exhortation towards goodness, holiness, perseverance, and this says, I urge you further brothers and sisters to bear with this word of exhortation. This is funny to me because I'm a preacher and I know what it's like to see on your face is the hope of I think he just meant in the conclusion. In conclusion, you know, this is this is the end of this letter. It's getting to the very end of it and it says, I urge you to bear with this sort exhortation just because it's been out here for so long.
47:56 Bear with this word of exhortation for have written to you briefly. There is so much more that could be said. There is so much more that could be said but these 13 chapters, this sermon that would have lasted who knows how long. I've written to you briefly. There's so much more.
48:12 John says that if everything were written down about Christ, the whole world cannot contain the books. I urge you brothers and sisters, bear with this word of exhortation for I've written to you briefly. Yeah. Briefly. Take notice that our brother Timothy has been released.
48:29 Now, here's a clue as to who this is and it used to be almost a test of orthodoxy to believe that Paul is the one who wrote Hebrews and there are people that I respect greatly that believe Paul wrote Hebrews. There's some of them in the room. He's smiling and nodding and raising his hand. Able to We're Timothy. Take notice that our brother Timothy has been released.
49:03 Do From the New Testament, we didn't even know Timothy had been jailed. We didn't know that this was going on. Take notice that our brother Timothy has been released. This was news to the people that were receiving this letter that would have been really good news and then, the writer goes on and says, with whom I'm coming with Timothy, if he comes to me soon, I'll see you. We're coming together.
49:27 I can't wait to get back home. Pray for us so that we will be back together sooner. So, I'll come see you as soon as I can. Greet all of your leaders. Word for leaders there is leaders like chiefs or officers.
49:41 Greet all of your leaders because this is a leader that had been leading in that church, I believe and it's saying to the whole populous of the church, the whole congregation, hey, greet your leaders and then doesn't stop there. It says, and all holy ones, all of the saints. We love y'all and we want you to know it. Greet them for us. If you hear this and they don't hear it, that's kind of the way we spread the word about church today.
50:06 If you hear this and you figure somebody might not have heard, call em. Greet all of your leaders and all of the saints. Those from Italy greet you. Now, in the first century, in the twenty first century, Italy right now is suffering. Really, really, really suffering.
50:21 So, I say pray for those in Italy but isn't it amazing how God's word just lines up sometimes? Those from Italy greet you. I believe that these folks were out from Italy. They were out of Rome. They were kicked out of Rome.
50:39 So, greetings from far in the twenty first century. Greetings, everybody out there who's afar off. This Sunday is an oddity. In one hundred and nine years, has anybody come up with it? Did you find that?
50:50 We look back and see, in one hundred and nine years, no one here can recall or find a record of a Sunday when church didn't happen in the usual manner. It just happens because it's what we do and we are doing it here this morning. We're still going forward. It's a little different obviously. It's odd, indeed and so, who wrote Hebrews?
51:08 I believe Priscilla wrote Hebrews. I think that Priscilla and Aquila together wrote Hebrews. They're mentioned seven times in the New Testament. Five out of those seven times, Priscilla's name is first. She has a Greek name, a Roman name I should say and I feel like I'm not positive and I won't arm wrestle over it.
51:31 It's one of those things that if I were to hit the the pulpit and say it must be Priscilla, that'd be a varied and strange teaching and you shouldn't listen to me. I think Priscilla wrote Hebrews and I think it bears following that down, tracing it down, and thinking about it and if you don't think that that's what it was, let me know who you think it was. Let's talk about it. That would be fun. So, who wrote Hebrews?
51:54 Origin said, I think are Eusebius or Origin one said, in truth, the only person who or the only one who really knows who wrote Hebrews is God and we can ask him when we get there, alright? So, here's that's what I think about that. Now, for the last word. The last word today is Hebrews thirteen twenty five and Carl, you can make your way on back up here. It's just a a few short sentence really and it is grace.
52:20 That's what it starts off with. Grace. Now, the church word, I try to define it every time because I think if you just hear it and you go, Grace, oh yeah, my grandmother's name Grace or if you hear and mine was and Tanya's was and a lot of y'alls were probably. If you just hear grace and you think, yeah, church where grace is the end, that's what he's saying, grace. Grace is a leaning towards with unmerited favor.
52:45 That's what it means. God is leaning towards you with unmerited favor. You don't deserve it. I didn't deserve it. I don't deserve it but God willingly is offering it through the blood of the eternal covenant through Jesus Christ our lord.
53:02 He offers grace and at the end of this letter, it's grace be with you all. This is an offer that is being extended to absolutely everyone. Grace be with you all. May God's grace abide with you all. May you live not just in his saving grace but in his sanctifying grace and recognize that that's what he's doing is leaning towards you with unmerited love and favor.
53:28 God, would you touch hearts this morning and in the reverberations hereafter, may you equip your saints to do the work of the church. God, would you use your word to peak our interest in your way of doing things? Would you, lord? Switch our human ideas for your divine ideas. We pray for you, for your peace.
53:55 You're the God of all peace and we pray lord that your grace that we would be carriers of your grace that when we contact someone, when we come close to someone, they would see your grace upon us and they would willingly receive it. In Jesus name, amen.

55:32 Jesus paid it all. All to him I hail. Sin had left to crimson state, he up from the dead. Oh, praise the one who paid my debt and raise his life up from the dead. Oh, praise the one who Jesus paid it all.
