  • Romans 6:3-5 Read by Mike Mayer before baptizing Stephanie, on being baptized into Christ's death and raised to new life

3 Or don’t you know that all we who were baptized into Christ Jesus were baptized into his death?

4 We were buried therefore with him through baptism into death, that just as Christ was raised from the dead through the glory of the Father, so we also might walk in newness of life.

    5 For if we have become united with him in the likeness of his death, we will also be part of his resurrection;

Opening verses establishing Paul's apostolic authority and his greeting to the church at Corinth

1 Paul, called to be an apostle of Jesus Christ through the will of God, and our brother Sosthenes,

2 to the assembly of God which is at Corinth; those who are sanctified in Christ Jesus, called to be saints, with all who call on the name of our Lord Jesus Christ in every place, both theirs and ours:

Paul thanking God for the grace given to the Corinthians and their enrichment in utterance and knowledge

4 I always thank my God concerning you, for the grace of God which was given you in Christ Jesus;

5 that in everything you were enriched in him, in all speech and all knowledge;

6 even as the testimony of Christ was confirmed in you:

7 so that you come behind in no gift; waiting for the revelation of our Lord Jesus Christ;

8 who will also confirm you until the end, blameless in the day of our Lord Jesus Christ.

Paul pleading that they all speak the same thing and that there be no divisions among them

10 Now I beg you, brothers, through the name of our Lord, Jesus Christ, that you all speak the same thing, and that there be no divisions among you, but that you be perfected together in the same mind and in the same judgment.

1 Corinthians 1:11-13

Chloe's household reporting contentions, and the rhetorical questions about whether Christ is divided or Paul was crucified for them

11 For it has been reported to me concerning you, my brothers, by those who are from Chloe’s household, that there are contentions among you.

12 Now I mean this, that each one of you says, “I follow Paul,” “I follow Apollos,” “I follow Cephas,” and, “I follow Christ.”

13 Is Christ divided? Was Paul crucified for you? Or were you baptized into the name of Paul?

1 Corinthians 1:14-17

Paul thankful he baptized few of them, and that Christ sent him to preach the gospel not with wisdom of words lest the cross be made of no effect

14 I thank God that I baptized none of you, except Crispus and Gaius,

15 so that no one should say that I had baptized you into my own name.

16 (I also baptized the household of Stephanas; besides them, I don’t know whether I baptized any other.)

17 For Christ sent me not to baptize, but to preach the Good News—not in wisdom of words, so that the cross of Christ wouldn’t be made void.

Recap

The message in order, in a few minutes of reading.

This message was the closing chapter on the Thessalonian letters and an opening look at First Corinthians, placed in their historical setting as Paul moves into his third missionary journey. The contrast between the two churches drove most of the sermon, with the Corinthian church's factions, sins, and pride standing in sharp relief against the faithfulness of the Thessalonians. The passage covered was 1 Corinthians 1:1-17.

What was said

Pastor Carl walked through the broader timeline the series has been following, from the Gospel of John through Acts and into the letters Paul wrote along the way. First and Second Thessalonians were written from Corinth during the second missionary journey, which made the contrast between the two churches all the more striking. Paul was sitting in the middle of Corinth's chaos when he wrote back to Thessalonica thanking God for them.

Corinth itself got a fair amount of attention. It sat at the narrowest point of land between two seas, about five kilometers wide, and every ship crossing from Asia to Italy had to unload its cargo there and haul it overland. That made Corinth enormously wealthy, cosmopolitan, and morally chaotic. The Temple of Aphrodite sat on top of Acrocorinth above the city, and the whole place has been described as New York, Los Angeles, and Las Vegas at the same time. That is the world Paul was writing into.

When Paul opens the letter by calling himself "called to be an apostle," that is not a throwaway phrase. He was using it deliberately because some in Corinth were already questioning whether his authority was real. The word "called" carries the same weight as the calling of believers out of the world into the body of Christ, so Paul is framing his own identity the same way from the very first line.

The greeting "grace and peace" was not a standard salutation of the ancient world. Pastor Carl had gone back through writers like Philostratus and Epictetus and found they simply did not say that. Grace and peace come from God the Father and the Lord Jesus Christ, named together as equals, and you cannot arrive at one without the other.

The section on factions hit the church's current situation directly. Some Corinthians were claiming to be of Paul, some of Apollos, some of Cephas, some of Christ. Rather than treating that as an ancient oddity, slides of Billy Graham, James Dobson, Mark Driscoll, Joyce Meyer and others made the point that Christians still sort themselves this way. Paul's response was a string of rhetorical questions the grammar itself demands be answered with a no: Is Christ divided? Was Paul crucified for you? Were you baptized in his name?

Paul's statement that Christ sent him to preach and not to baptize was read not as a dismissal of baptism but as a clear-eyed understanding of his own particular gift. He was not saying baptism does not matter. He was saying he understood his lane, and that not everyone in the body needs to do everything. The service included a baptism, and the invitation was left open throughout.

The section ended on the sophists, the professional teachers of rhetoric and oratory who could argue either side of any question for a fee. Paul was working in an environment that prized verbal dexterity over truth, and his refusal to dress up the gospel in that kind of eloquence was itself a theological statement. Making the cross impressive by making it clever would empty it of its power, and that is where the passage stopped.

Doing a Bible study?

Here is a guide we have prepared for you: the passages in order, questions for the group, and room to write.

  1. Pastor Carl compared the Thessalonian church and the Corinthian church side by side. What struck you most about that contrast, and where do you think our own church lands on that spectrum?
  2. Pastor Carl pointed out that Paul opens his letter by establishing his authority as an apostle right from the first verse, because some in Corinth were questioning it. When have you found it difficult to receive correction or teaching from someone whose authority you were not sure about, and how did you work through that?

0:00 Alright. Good morning, everybody. How are doing this morning? Fabulous. Good.
0:04 It looks like we are definitely on Jackson time this morning. Just kinda lingering and hanging out, but I do appreciate that about this place. If we have some visitors, can we just see your hands? We can we can be sure to welcome you. Good.
0:18 Good to have you guys. Good to see you. Good to see you. Why don't we stand up? We'll begin by praising God.
0:23 When I wake up in the
0:26 lamb of glory with the saints, I will tell my story. There won't be one name that I proclaim. Alright. We'll sing Yours Will Be, Yours Will Be, The only name that matters to me, the only one's favor I see, the only name that matters to me. Yours won't be the friendship and affection I need to feel my father smiling at me.
1:09 You're the name that matters to me. And yours is the name, the name that I've saved me. Mercy and grace for God I forgave me. Your love is all I've ever need. Let's sing when I wake.
1:32 When I wake up in the land of glory with the saints, I will tell my story.
1:46 Let's proclaim the name of Jesus.
2:01 Just that name. Let's repeat that again. Jesus. Just that name. We're gonna sing
2:21 a few la la's. Alright? You're good at those la la's.
2:54 There will be one name. And there will be one name that I proclaim
3:05 Amen. You guys can be seated.
3:07 Amen. I don't want to electrocute myself this morning. Are having a baptism this morning. At least one and I want to tell you right now, it is open. If you are a believer in Jesus and you have never been baptized before, here is water.
3:22 What hinders you? We'll talk a little bit more about it. There's at least one going on today and I'm excited for that. Got a few announcements for you this morning. We're glad you're here.
3:31 That's good. The connect hour is between services. That is happening just as soon as this one's over and before the next one this morning and that's just a good place to go down the hall, get some coffee, hot chocolate. What am I thinking? It's summertime.
3:46 There's going to be fruit and donuts and all of that sort of stuff too but mainly, there will be people at the other end of the hall to talk to and connect with that second service and I want to mention that too. We do have another service that happens at 11:00. That's the tradition service. Now, the music will not be nearly as funky, I promise but if you like traditional hymns, 11:00 service is happening every Sunday. So, you can connect with those or you could just hang around and see what the song service is like.
4:15 That's why that's not working. Here we go. Monday nights at first B. We'll be at first B this week on Monday night, 06:15 down the hall. That's tomorrow.
4:23 Meal, music, and message and that is an eye test right there. If that looks fuzzy, your eyes are doing just fine. Wednesday morning prayer time is at 07:30 in the morning. Every Wednesday morning that usually meets in my office unless I've made a mess of it and then it's in the fellowship hall or if we have too many to meet in my office, it'll be in the fellowship hall. So, 07:30, that is a great, great time.
4:46 That's a generic slide but that is a great time. 07:30 in the morning and people come and go during that time. It usually goes from 07:30 until about nine or 09:15. So, if you get here late, you're fine. If you get here early and you have to go, you're fine.
5:01 It's just a very comfortable time of people who believe that prayer matters. Solid Rock Student Ministry, I've got a couple of slides. This is looks like a girl's trip to the village out there where they did the ropes course and this is slacklining last week. For those of you who do not know what slacklining is and my explanation didn't help. That is a slackline right there and those are three of our guys in the Solid Rock Youth Group that are standing on it and trying to walk across without holding on to the tree.
5:34 So, Renzi is coming up to do some announcements.
5:38 Alright. So, tonight, middle schoolers, we are meeting here for a movie night from six to 08:30. The bulletin says seven but I can assure you it's at six. So middle schoolers come to that. That'd be great.
5:51 Also, this next weekend, the eighteenth and nineteenth, Friday and Saturday, we're gonna do an overnight for the middle schoolers out at Crystal Creek Campground. I asked them if they want to do a backpacking trip overnight. They said they'd rather car camp. So, we'll be at Crystal Creek. We will eat well and we'll have a good time but a big thing I want to let you guys know is Solid Rock Summer schedules, dates, and times can be found in a few different places now.
6:16 They'll be in the bulletin. They're also, I believe, on the website. But down outside of my office is this really fancy cork board with all that information on it. And I actually just pinned the schedules too on the cork board at the entrance way. And if you are saying, I can't get connected because you don't have any of my information, I even made this wonderful spreadsheet.
6:38 And I put an example of my information on there. And it's just your name as a parent, your child's name, an email address, if you text, and a cell phone number. If you guys are not getting my texts or emails, make sure I have your information and I promise you will get them. And then, watch for reminder text the day before or the day of the youth events. That's it.
7:03 Alright, thank you very much and I think that's it for the announcements except for Nancy, would you come up and talk about Bridges Ministry? I have a mic up here I'll get for you.
7:15 Good morning. Oh. Yes. That's definitely working. My name is Nancy Cummins and two months ago, my husband Brad and I were led by the Holy Spirit to start Bridges Ministry and would like to give you an update as to how God is working in bridging the gap of needs and resources within the body of the first feet.
7:36 Well two things have surprised us at this point. One is is that people have stepped up offering their resources than the needs at this point which is amazing and the other is that the needs have not been personal but rather the corporate needs in the functioning of the church and I'll explain that in just a moment. Of course God can shift his ministry in the future. The kickoff event for BRIDGES that started two months ago was offering a babysitting service for the date night out in May and it was very successful and we had five adults overseeing 17 precious children. Working with children is such a blessing and would like I would like to share a blessing that I received with the children.
8:27 I gained a special friend as a result and her name is Aria Sikamai and is she here today? Would she come up please? I would like to introduce her. Aw. And I'll explain.
8:46 This precious little girl, mom's going to bring her, that's cool. Every Sunday when Aria sees me, she runs up to me with the biggest smile on her face and gives me a hug. I was thinking about this in the middle of the night last night and I started crying, so I hope I don't break down. But can you come up? Can mom bring her to?
9:08 Mom is Michelle, dad is Joe. Is she shy? Aw, I want them to see her beautiful face so. Aw, today. We'll see mom's beautiful face.
9:23 Can you say hi real quick, talk in the mic? This is your chance. This is how old is she? She just turned five. She is really a beautiful child, thank you Michelle, appreciate that, we tried.
9:38 You know that simple act of just her coming up and smiling and giving me a hug is such an act of love and it just really touches my heart. So I have a new friend at the age of five, now I have my grandchildren and they're very precious but to have an additional friend at the age of five is really big to me. Well our children here are future leaders and servants in the church And there are numerous requests for another date night out and we encourage anyone who has a spirit led heart's desire to work with the children to serve in this manner, you know, please let us know. Another great way to serve and utilize their God given gifts is helping in the nursery in regards with children and we ask that you contact Pam Valdez who is the nursery coordinator if you are interested and according to my information there are few faithful servants in this area in regards to nursery and we need more helping hearts to lighten their load. Children are precious and I never dreamed I would gain a friend by babysitting that night it's just really awesome.
10:50 Lastly there is a need for a wedding coordinator within the church. This person or person just needs to coordinate with the party. In regards to the reception following the services Brad and I do for the funeral coordination, for funeral or memorial services. So it's not that difficult and it's just a really necessary thing. What's happening is when people don't use their gifts in the areas within the church and I call this corporate needs as opposed to personal needs, is our staff ends up doing it or the elders end up doing it and everything and we do not want to burden them any more than they already are.
11:32 And so this is why God grants gifts, spiritual gifts to each of us as believers to utilize these gifts to help benefit the body. So I'm encouraging you to, if you feel led and have a passion and a desire in your heart that's been given to you by God, I pray that you obey that leading. If you are interested in any of the things that I have mentioned please contact us through the usual venues like website, email, phones or text. We do text in our sixties. Our service elder is Todd Lampa and so if you need to talk to him about anything more you're welcome to contact him as well.
12:20 We want to thank, oh my husband was wanting me to remind you that we've been sending out email blasts and if you have not been receiving them would you please contact the, church office so we can get you in on that list if you're not receiving the, newsletters through the email blast. So lastly I wanted to thank each and every one of you who are serving and I'm amazed by us taking on this ministry, how many of you serve in the smallest and the biggest ways. It's incredible, I don't think I've ever been a part of a church where so many people are participating and contributing and I thank you for that and I want to thank those who are willing and have a desire in the future to utilize their gift in in helping this body. Thank you so much for your time.
13:13 Mike Mayer is he is one of the elders of this church who is not currently serving as an elder. Come on up, Mike, if you would. And this morning, Mike has a little to say too because he is gonna baptize. I
13:29 think we'll just go ahead and get wet if that's alright. It was warm. Thanks, Carl. So, I just like to start by sharing a verse. This is out of Romans chapter six.
13:47 I'm going start at verse three. Do you not know that all of us who have been baptized into Christ Jesus were baptized into his death? We were buried therefore with him by baptism into death in order that just as Christ was raised from the dead by the glory of the father, we too might walk in newness of life. For if we have been united with him in a death like his, we shall certainly be united with him in a resurrection like his. Stephanie, would you like to please join me up here?
14:17 So, this is my niece, Stephanie, and it is a great honor to be able to to baptize her. She asked if she'd be baptized. So, I said, well, have you put your faith and trust in Jesus Christ as your lord and savior? And so, we sat down at the table that night and and said that prayer and I'd like to go through that again with you right now. So, Stephanie, do you believe that Jesus Christ died on the cross for your sins?
14:46 Yes.
14:47 Do you believe that he was buried and then rose again in fulfillment of scriptures? Yes. So by your proclamation of faith, Stephanie, I'd like to now baptize you in the name of the father, the son, and the Holy Spirit.
15:06 Amen. Amen. Alright. Are there any other takers? That's that is hardcore evangelism right there, isn't it?
15:25 Isn't that look fun? No. We are going to go on then. Carl, would you come on up with the band and would y'all stand up and greet one another and just welcome folks in this morning?
15:37 Who is his king glory and that pursues me with his love and haunts me with his shearing My spirit's still longing before his grace in which to stand. Who is this king of ring? A son of God, a son of man. His name is Jesus. Let's sing it out.
17:00 His name is Jesus. Precious Jesus. Lord almighty, king of my heart, king glory. Who is this king glory? This king glory.
17:28 But strength and majesty. And wisdom beyond measure. The gracious king of kings, the Lord of earth and ever. The creator of all things, Who is his king of glory as everything's reign. Sing his name.
18:04 His name is precious Jesus, the Lord Almighty, the king of my hopper, the king of glory.
18:23 He's the Lord of earth in heaven.
18:26 The Lord on earth and heaven. As the creator of all things, who is his king glory. He's everything to me. His name is Jesus, precious Jesus. The Lord almighty, the king of my heart, the king of glory.
19:04 It's the Lord almighty. The Lord almighty, the king of my heart, the king glory.
19:19 Lord, we wanna give our just our thanks, our praise to you this morning. I thank you for that sweet testimony of faith and just that simple act of of baptism. And and what it symbolizes are are are death to ourself, our our new life being raised to new life in you. And what a joy. What a gift that is.
19:37 And, Lord, we confess that we often forfeit that gift because we're chasing other things rather than you. And and I pray that you'd steer us back to you, that we would truly see that you're the giver of life and you give life to the full measure. And so we offer our praise, we offer our our allegiance, our devotion to you once again.
28:57 For allowing us lord to be here in your presence lord as we are out and about every day. You're everywhere. We can't get over it lord. You've entrusted us with so much with your gospel, with your good news, lord, because we all know the bad news. Lord, would you take this offering and use it for the advance of your kingdom here on earth?
29:21 Would you show this church exactly how you would have us to move. And you we live and breathe and have our being. Lord, would you please bless this offering that we give? We're bringing back a very small portion of what you've given to us. But lord, we are doing so cheerfully.
29:40 In Jesus name, amen. Alright. This morning, we are in transition. If y'all were keeping up from last week, Thessalonians, we came to the end of Thessalonians and as we're getting ready for this morning, I thought it'd be good to say goodbye to Thessalonians and introduce Corinthians. Now, they are very very different.
35:42 We'll go through these one slide at a time and kind of see that but we're saying goodbye to the Thessalonians today and an introduction to Corinthians and I want to go over one more time. For those of you who have been here a while, you know that this is the way we've been doing things. The chronology of Christianity. The way thus far. So far, we've gone through the gospel of John together.
36:03 One section at a time, detailing the preexistence, the life, ministry, death, burial, resurrection, and session of Jesus. It's been called the gospel of belief. We did that about year and a half ago and it took us a while and then, the Acts of the Apostles was the next thing and that took us a long time because it's long but it details the history of the Holy Spirit empowered growth of the early church. It's an accurate historical record. Now, we've taken that record and we've put it against other verifiable things that we can see throughout history and we've come up with this framework and approximate dates of some New Testament events.
36:42 Now, I know it's not literally zero. For some of you, when you see this, the figuring was wrong. It's probably about four AD that Christ was born but it's just easier to say zero, okay? Zero to 33. Some people are 30 AD people and some people are 33 AD people.
36:58 If you don't know, it doesn't matter. 33 AD, life and ministry of Jesus. In '33, Jesus died and rose and Pentecost happened. Thereafter, we have the early thirties. This was a huge event in the life of the early church.
37:15 Stephen was murdered and when Stephen was murdered, it scattered the church of Jerusalem and you know how Jesus said, you will be my witnesses here in Jerusalem, in Judea, in Samaria. The martyrdom of Stephen kind of forced their hand a bit. They might not have been ready to go but they went. Jesus was building his church. He converts Saul on the Damascus Road.
37:40 Jesus himself appears to Paul in the early 30s as Saul and he changed his name to Paul. Saul, it's interesting the name there. Saul is a grand name, a big name, about a big guy who makes big important decisions and then when he changed it to Paul, that's a diminutive name and he brought him down. You know how John the Baptist said, I must decrease and he must increase. Paul was the same way.
38:06 Peter and Philip ministered in Palestine during the 30s and 40s. So, this is not long after the crucifixion resurrection of Jesus. Paul and Barnabas get together and minister in Antioch and they take their first missionary journey together '44 to '49. We're pretty sure of those dates. The late 40s or early 50s, James was written and we covered James together.
38:30 So, what I've asked y'all to stick with me on is we're going do this chronologically. Go forward in the order that the New Testament was written as best we can tell. Some people would argue Galatians came first. Maybe. I won't arm wrestle you over it.
38:44 James written to Jewish Christians in the late 40s, probably '49 or '50. Fifty to fifty two is Paul's second missionary journey. That was right after Paul and Barnabas split. You remember in Acts where they came to that place where Barnabas felt like they ought to take John Mark and Paul said, no and so they split and when they split apart, Paul went on his second missionary journey picking folks up along the way. Timothy and Silas being two of those.
39:08 50 to '52 and in the early 50s, Paul writes while he's still on his second missionary journey from Corinth, he writes first and second Thessalonians. That's what we've been covering for the past six weeks or so. So, that brings you almost up to speed. It's an interesting thing. First and second Thessalonians are written from Corinth and you can see after we get into Corinth a bit, you can see why he was so thankful for the Thessalonians.
39:36 The Thessalonians were a great, great church, a group of people that listened to what he said and put it into practice and the Corinthians were hard headed and stubborn and they had several things that were just not all that great. So, on Paul's third missionary journey, he wrote first Corinthians. Now, first Corinthians is not the first letter that Paul wrote to the Corinthians. He wrote a letter that we don't no longer have. Wouldn't it be interesting to know what that says?
40:07 God says, no. It's not in the canon. It's not something that God knew that we needed. Now, the Corinthians might have needed their fanny's kicked and he probably did that in that first letter. I know he did it in the third letter because he says so in the fourth letter which we call second Corinthians.
40:24 Are y'all with me so far? Okay. Paul's third missionary journey about 55 from Ephesus, Paul writes first Corinthians. So, that's where we are and we're saying goodbye to Thessalonians introduction to Corinthians. I want to look at this.
40:40 The Thessalonian church like I described, it was fertile ground. Paul says, it hit the ground. The message of Christ hit the ground running. It spread very very rapidly. It was fertile ground.
40:51 They were mission minded. He said, everywhere that I go, people are telling me that you have already told them about this story about Jesus. So, they're mission minded. They trusted Paul's authority. That's interesting because I've said multiple times, he was not an authoritarian.
41:07 He was not a dictator but he did say some things in the name of Christ and expected them to be carried out. He carried Christ's authority and the Thessalonians recognized that. They wanted to know from him about those end times matters and so, they trusted him. There was no sin emphasized in that whole book. Y'all might be remembering last week's message where I was talking about laziness or idleness and that's the only one.
41:33 It's at the very very end of the book. It was not overemphasized. He said, you're already doing this church discipline thing. You're already doing it and I know you're going to be doing it because it is the natural thing for a loving Christian to do is to bring people into the fold. Bring em back in.
41:50 It was all about reconciliation but no sin was emphasized. I want to say that again. They were not selfish people. They may have been a little gullible, sincere but they were not pretentious. They didn't believe that their way was the right way.
42:05 They didn't stand up and say or argue back and forth. They were sincere and not pretentious. There were some people that might have gotten into the church teaching, pretending to be Paul. Somebody sent a letter pretending to be Paul and they were confused by it and they admitted to being confused by it rather than saying, we know what we're doing here. Sincere, not pretentious, maybe a little bit gullible but they did care about others and that showed.
42:31 They were caring about even the ones who were not working for themselves. Let's look at the Corinthian church. Side by side, it's a black and white comparison here. Fertile ground, I think the Corinthian church probably is a field full of weeds. There are a lot of other things that are trying to choke out the gospel and we'll see those things.
42:52 Some of em are pretty ugly, pretty thorny weeds but the message still did take root and he's working on that garden in this letter. He's tending the garden. Factions divided them. I've noticed something from being on the mission field for several years that we could have different denominations come down to the place where we were in Mexico serving and team to team to team to team, I couldn't tell the difference. Now, if I hung around for worship at night, the forms might change a little bit.
43:23 You would never see somebody in the pulpit normally in a baptist church where I'm from dressed like I am right now. I dress for a baptism but if I hung around for the forms of worship at night, sometimes I could tell the difference but when your hands are put to the work, your mission minded, then the factions seem to dissipate a bit. It's about the cross of Christ. Did they trust Paul's authority? Some of them did.
43:52 Some of them questioned his authority and he mentions that a couple of times in this letter and as a matter of fact, when we get into the scripture this morning, I'm going to call out a few things. The Holy Spirit inspired Paul to write this letter but he starts mentioning the question of authority in the very first verses when he opens up because he knows that some people are questioning his authority. So, he is having to work against that in a way. Multiple sins. Throughout this whole book, there are multiple sins and some of em like I said, are pretty doggone ugly.
44:25 Paul says, not even among the Gentiles have they thought about doing this. They are selfish. I say probably very pretentious. I hold that word a little bit because I don't want to say that people are pretending. They may actually believe that they should sin more so that grace may abound more but it sounds like a convenient excuse to me.
44:49 It sounds like a convenient heresy. So, they're probably pretending to be. So, probably very pretentious and they were immature and it shows multiple times. Paul even uses sarcasm. I'll try to point it out when we get there.
45:04 There are couple of places that if you read it straight, you think, well, he's saying that they're rich. Oh, he's going, Oh, already you've become rich. That's what he's saying. I'll try to emphasize that as we go through in the next few weeks. Goodbye, Thessalonians.
45:20 This is not your father's Oldsmobile. This is not the same place. An introduction to Corinthians. So, we'll get into it. First Corinthians one one and two.
45:32 Paul, called to be an apostle of Jesus Christ. Remember when I said about the authority issue? That sounds like, oh, that's no big deal. Paul called to be an apostle. No, no biggie but he's starting off in the very first verses.
45:48 He says the same thing in Romans but the word called there is the same base that we base the church on where you're called out of the world. You're called together into one body. Usually, when Paul talks about being called, he's talking about people being called into the body of Christ but he's saying that his calling from the very beginning, opening verse here, his calling is this, an apostle of Jesus Christ. Now, called an apostle, called means set apart or called out from one thing into another thing, set apart for the ministry of being an apostle. Apostello means to send one out.
46:29 So, he is someone who is sent out. Now, he specifically sent out. If you read three different times in the book of Acts, he tells the story of his conversion and that he was sent out to be an apostle. Someone sent out to to the Gentiles specifically. Corinthians are Gentiles primarily.
46:47 Paul, called to be an apostle of Jesus Christ through the will of God. He's saying that this is not something that I wanted to do. It's through the will of God. He named me to be this. So, he's given me this authority and I'm exercising it at his will and Sostane is our brother, the Sostane is I'm sure the Corinthians would know.
47:08 To the church of God which is at Corinth. Now, Corinth, if you don't know where that is, it is in it was in ancient Greece. This area right here is around the Aegean Sea and Paul's missionary journeys took him up into this area on the first journey and across from Troas over into Macedonia, Philippi, Thessalonica, down to Athens, and Acts 17, he was in Athens, and then at eighteen one, it says, and from there, he went to Corinth. So, this is just to give you, some of y'all are map people. I've had, I don't know how many of you have come up to me afterwards and say, I like the maps.
47:42 I really like to know that this really happened in time and space. So, there's another map. It's a little closer. Asia being here, Italy being here. This is Akea and Corinth is on Akea.
47:57 Just off the tip of. It's part of ancient Greece but it's just moving away from Macedonia and Athens. Oh, that is really fuzzy. We'll just skip that one altogether. The best shipping lane from Asia to Italy for those of you who are logicians and you want to know why you wouldn't want to be here, why Carth was located there.
48:20 The best shipping lane from Asia to Italy and the old boats that they had was not in the open sea from here to here and around or here and around. They would not want to do that in the deep water. They would not want to do it in the winds and the waves and it was sketchy. Paul was shipwrecked three different times, we know. So, the best way is to have land near you at all times and so they would go through here and Corinth is right here.
48:45 Now, that shipping lane hits a spot right there where it's land. That's land and it's about five kilometers wide but it's the narrowest point and the rest of it is clear open sailing and so at that narrowest point, nowadays, they have dug a trench one side or another like the Panama Canal and ships go through it all the time nowadays. They have had the plan since ancient Greece. Julius Caesar had the plans to build that canal. The French actually completed it sometime in this past century but five kilometers of land right there meant that ships had to take their cargo off, load it on the carts, and travel across to put it back down in the in the Corinthian Gulf, the Saronic Gulf to the Corinthian Gulf and Corinth is located right here.
49:35 So, Corinth made all the taxes off of anything that had to cross through their land. Corinth has been described as being like New York, Los Angeles, and Las Vegas all at the same time. It's a very very wealthy place. As far as the lay of the land goes, if that helps you any, Thessalonica's up here where we're saying goodbye. They went down to Athens.
49:59 You know, response that he got in Athens was mixed. He spoke to Epicureans and Stoics who are on rather opposite ends of the spectrum and they said, yeah, we'll hear you again on this matter. Some decided. Anytime that you proclaim the gospel, you'll have some that will that will make the decision, the realization that that God is reaching out them and they will accept the message but some will resist. Some resisted there and he moved on from Athens down to Corinth and he could walk across because he didn't have to cross that canal.
50:30 The ruins of ancient Corinth. From this position right here, you're actually standing in what used to be the Temple Of Apollos down in actual Corinth. It was a big, big deal. This temple was a huge deal and then, this behind it is Acro Current, Upper Current which is a butte for y'all. It's a mountain for me.
50:51 It's eighteen eighty three feet rising up above it. It actually looks kind of like Stone Mountain in Georgia if any of y'all have ever seen that without all the carvings of the Confederate Dead. It's it's right here but on top of that, Acro Corinth, there was another temple built and it was the Temple Of Aphrodite. The Temple Of Aphrodite is said, I was trying to figure out a delicate way of saying this. It was said to have a thousand female prostitutes at the top of this thing.
51:20 People would track up to the top to worship. The plethora of gods that the Greeks had is what Paul was working against. He preached down here in the Agora in the marketplace right there in front of the Bema, the the the judgment seat. He also preached up at the top of Acrocarat. He was encountering a very very licentious world.
51:48 He was encountering a very very free world. And he was engaging them with the message on the second missionary journey. That's where he wrote the Thessalonians from. So, I'm sure he was in this milieu of what was pretty funky, rich, dirty, sinful place and he was writing back saying, oh, thank you guys. I should thank God all the time for you Thessalonians.
52:11 Because look at this place. My goodness. Now, this is from Acrocarat looking back down towards the Peloponnesian Peninsula there and it's kind of like being on top of Snow King. It's that. So, Paul, called to be an apostle of Jesus Christ through the will of God.
52:28 Sosten is our brother to the church of God which is at Corinth. To those who are sanctified in Christ Jesus, called to be saints. You know what I'm saying? When Paul says called, he's calling them out of the world, in that, out of this milieu, he's calling them out of that to be saints. Now, he knows that the church has problems when he writes this letter.
52:48 In fact, he's responding and he'll tell us that in just a minute. He's responding from verbal information and he's responding later on in the letter to a letter that they've written him back, wanting to clarify some things. To those who are sanctified in Christ, Jesus called to be saints. With all who in every place and I should add every time, call on the name of Jesus Christ, our lord, both theirs and ours. Grace to you and peace from God our father and the Lord Jesus Christ.
53:17 So, all who in every place call on the name of Jesus Christ. Why does this matter to us? Do you live in a sinful society? Do you live in a place where my goodness, I wouldn't have even thought of sin like that. Yeah, we do.
53:32 We live in a place that's probably a lot like Corinth. Are we wealthy? Yes. As a nation, we're incredibly wealthy. Probably much better off.
53:41 This was an emerging middle class city. I've heard it described a couple of different commentaries say that way. So, this was this is not ruins of a temple. This is a real active thing and that struck me this week too is all these ruins of all these temples, two thousand years later, there are still churches everywhere. This message rings true and has since the beginning and it will carry on.
54:05 It includes us. All who in every place call on the name of Jesus Christ and here we are. First B, Snow King Mountain rising in the background just like the Acro Corinth 1,571 feet. Grace to you and peace. Now, I've read a few people this week and I read this and I love grace and peace.
54:22 I just love that to start off with and I've read a few people saying, you shouldn't put too much in this. This is just a standard salutation. Well, I went back through Philostratus and Strabo and Epectitus and all these other guys. They don't ever say grace and peace to you. We have a monopoly on grace and peace because it comes from God, our father, and the Lord Jesus Christ.
54:45 So, they're very different. Grace to you and peace from God our father and the Lord Jesus Christ. Now, does this sound familiar? Have you all heard that phrase anywhere else? Yes.
54:58 You heard it about a month ago? The first Thessalonians or second Thessalonians and first Corinthians start off the second verse is exactly the same. Grace to you and peace from God. You don't get to peace without grace and you don't get to grace without God. Grace to you and peace from God our father and the Lord Jesus Christ.
55:25 He links them together. This is the deity of Christ. They are equals. God, our father, and the Lord Jesus Christ. Moving on, I thank my God always concerning you for the grace of God which was given to you by Christ Jesus.
55:42 Do you read between the lines there a little bit? Whoo. Gracious y'all are sinful people. I thank my God for his grace. You know what?
55:49 Because the Thessalonians and all of that look like was good about them. All of the righteousness on Earth is like filthy rags before God. He recognized that the way is grace. God's grace. I'm thankful for the grace of God which was given to you by Christ Jesus that you were enriched.
56:07 Now, later on, we'll see this enriched. I've already mentioned it one time where he's being sarcastic. He's being serious right here. You are being enriched with every spiritual blessing. You have the access to the riches that are in Christ Jesus.
56:20 By your belief in him, In everything, in all utterance. Y'all know towards the end of this letter, he starts talking about speaking in tongues. And it was very disruptive in this church. He's saying in all utterance, in all knowledge, we have a problem with the sophists even the beginning of gnosticism is happening at Corinth and that's it's a religion based on knowing, on knowledge, elevating self by what you know but he's thanking God for the very thing that God has enriched them. He has given them all this utterance, all knowledge, even as the testimony of Christ was confirmed in you.
57:00 He is not doubting their salvation because they have some sin among them. That's gracious in itself because many times when we start to divide ourselves, we say, I don't even know if that person's saved. You know what I'm talking about? Especially, it's convenient when you're in the middle of an argument with someone. If you're on the other side of a divisive situation and you go, I'm not even sure they're saved.
57:26 That's not exactly a Christian attitude, is it? Paul is saying this to people who are having problems in a lot of different areas and he's saying, the testimony of Christ was confirmed in you and I've got that, I'm sure. So, that you come short in no gift. He speaks about spiritual gifts for several chapters toward the end of this letter. He's forecasting everything he's going to talk about in this blessing at the beginning.
57:50 You come short in no gift. You might not be using them appropriately right now. But we're going to get the right people in the right seats on the bus before this is over. Eagerly, you're waiting for the revelation, the revealing of our Lord Jesus Christ. So, they were looking forward to the second coming just like the Thessalonians were.
58:11 That you may be blameless in the day of our Lord Jesus Christ. The second coming ever looms. That is our eternal hope. It's our hope of glory. It is something that is never fall from far from Paul's writing.
58:25 No matter who he's writing to. God is faithful. By whom you were called into the fellowship of his son. He's saying it again. You were called into fellowship.
58:36 You don't lack in any gifts corporately but Nancy was talking about a little while ago with Bridges Ministry. We have the gifts within this church to accomplish what God wants accomplished in this valley. If he wants more accomplished, he'll bring more with the those gifts. Does that make sense? The gifts that we're lacking, he will supply as we turn to him, as we yield to him our gifts, he will use him.
58:57 God is faithful and you are called into the fellowship of his son, Jesus Christ, our lord. Now, I plead with you brethren. By the name, this is one of those places where he's calling that authority again. In the name, through the name, by the name, by the authority that God has given me. That you all speak the same thing.
59:23 Some says, you be in one accord. Some versions say that but it literally means that you all speak the same thing. You all have the same story on your lips which is the gospel. Center yourselves around the center of the gospel and that there be no divisions among you but that you be perfectly joined together in the same mind and in the same judgment. For it has been declared to me concerning you, my brothers and sisters, my brethren.
59:51 By those of Chloe's household. You know, this is not gossip. If somebody names where it came from, that's a little bit of a tendency. I hadn't just been hearing it. I've been hearing it from Chloe.
1:00:04 Chloe says and I trust her that there are contentions among you. Now, I say this, that each of you says, I am of Paul or I am of Apollos or I am of Cephas, that's Peter or I am of Christ. Is Christ divided? Was Paul crucified for you? Or were you baptized in the name of Paul?
1:00:26 You hear what he's saying? These are rhetorical questions. Is Christ divided? Christ is not divided. He was crucified but he also came together whole, completely whole.
1:00:42 He ascended into heaven. He is not divided. There are not two. Was Paul crucified for you? No.
1:00:53 He didn't have the option. Thank you. He had not lived a perfect life. He could not die a perfect death. He could not swap his sinless, spotless life like Christ could for anyone.
1:01:06 So, was Paul crucified for you? No. Or were you baptized in the name of Paul? Was Stephanie just baptized in the name of Mike? No.
1:01:17 Alright. You were baptized into the name of the father, son, and the holy ghost. In Christ, he was the only one that could make that sacrifice. Mike loves you but he couldn't do it. No.
1:01:31 And actually the grammar begs for a no response. If you can't pick up on it, the grammar begs for a no. Now, is this silly? We look at it and we think, why would they even say that? I'm of Paul.
1:01:44 I'm of Apollos. I'm of Cephas. Why would they do that? I don't know. Let's look.
1:01:47 Is it silly? We like him. Some of us really really like him. Some of us really like him. That is Billy Graham, James Dobson, John McArthur, Charles Stanley, Chuck Swindoll laughing which is his normal stance.
1:02:09 None of these guys want you to go for them. All of these guys are preaching Christ. We may be a bit uncomfortable with a few of these and we might just see it come into focus a little bit more. Ravi Zacharias, Joyce Meyer, Benny Hen I've heard some powerful messages from Benny Hen on the gospel and then he gets away from and he gets into other areas that are disputable matters without a doubt. Francis Chan, Mark Driscoll.
1:02:45 Is it silly to even be thinking about it? Do we think that that's just something of the past? That was a first century problem. No. No.
1:02:52 It is silly. That we still do it. I I like a lot of those folks up there but I just want you to see that there is there are still divisions among us. There are some, they're more popular in certain areas. There's some more popular for what they're saying.
1:03:13 There's some that are up there just completely faithful but feel like they're the only ones that are completely faithful. That is division that exist in the American church right now. I thank God that I baptized none of you except Christmas and Gays. I'm not saying that. I'm dressed for baptism.
1:03:30 If y'all want to get baptized, I'm up here. No. I thank God that I baptized none of you. He's saying that for a reason because some people were saying, I am of Paul. It was probably those he baptized.
1:03:43 Lest anyone should say that I have baptized in my own name. Yes, I also baptized the household of Stephanus. Besides, I don't know. Besides that, I don't know whether I baptized any other. He doesn't remember.
1:03:56 He's been so many places and he knows that it's important for him to baptize because Jesus said, go you therefore into all the world, baptizing and teaching them to obey all that I've commanded you. He knows that that's important but he knows it's the important step for the believer to make acting in obedience to identify themselves with Christ. For him, it's obvious that if he's baptizing someone, it's always in the name of Christ. For Christ did not send me to baptize but to preach the gospel. That me is interesting.
1:04:29 Especially with the context of spiritual gifts that he's going to talk about throughout this letter. He's saying, we don't all need to do it all. My job is to proclaim. He says in another place, woe be unto me if I do not preach the gospel. This is what Christ has given me.
1:04:45 Very, very clear understanding of this. Woe be unto me if I do not preach the gospel. Christ didn't send me to baptize. I'll delegate that. Administrate that out.
1:04:55 Let somebody that loves to get wet. Get in there and baptize those folks. Christ didn't send me to baptize but to preach the gospel. Not with wisdom of words, lest the cross of Christ should be made of no effect. The wisdom of words.
1:05:12 This is what I was alluding to a little while ago that the sophists were folks who would teach skills of oratory and rhetoric and they did so for a fee. It was a private school actually of oratory and rhetoric. They trained up statesmen and lawyers. Actually, the first lawyers were sophists. They could argue either side of an argument.
1:05:35 It was not driven by true belief in most cases. It was an argument made of eloquent words that was built to persuade. They were known for their skills of debate and their verbal Olympics were quite impressive. I put verbal Olympics because the Isthmian Games like was second only to the actual Olympics. The Isthmian Games happened right there at Corinth.
1:05:58 It was a huge, huge deal. They were, you know, we talk about how much Corinth in America like they were huge sports fans. The big sports fan but they also love to people hear people debate different philosophies. So, sophist, it's not necessarily a bad term especially if it's used of the first sophistic. This area of time, this time period was 50 to 100 has been called the second sophistic age.
1:06:28 Now, before that, the sophists were active like five hundred years before and that was a little bit less disingenuous. By this point, it had gotten to the point where they were seen as we see lawyers honestly today. When you hear jokes about it, you hear jokes because it does not seem to be motivated by anything more than greed. So, when Paul is defending himself by saying it's not with the wisdom of words, a made up wisdom. Have you all ever read philosophy?
1:06:58 Oh my goodness. You can just spin and spin and spin and spin those words till you confuse somebody into the point of believing almost anything. Christian philosophy, I was reading earlier in this week and I passed it along to several of y'all. GK Chesterton, where he does the same thing with the words. He spends them like crazy and makes you look at things from all angles but he comes down in the right place.
1:07:21 Paul might sound eloquent and impressive to us but apparently, he thought that it was just ugly compared to what everybody else was saying but it was true and he would not be swayed. There's no way you'd ever catch Paul arguing for the other side. He's going to argue from the position of the cross. That's the only thing he has to stand on and he knows it and so, he presents it to everyone that he meets. He starts in the synagogue and then moves from there.
1:07:51 He did the same thing when he was at Corinth as he did at Thessalonica as he did it everywhere he went. It's not with the wisdom of words. Lest the cross of Christ should be made of no effect. Tune in next week. That's it.
1:08:13 The takeaways from all of this. We had a long service today. Takeaways from all this. We should always lead off with grace and peace. It's a good place to start.
1:08:21 Extending the grace that God has given to us as Christians. That's the only thing that offers peace. You can't get around it any other way. Be confident in God as it concerns other believers. Like he said, rather than accusing someone and not even being a Christian because they don't agree with you, start from the position of God still working on that person and he's still working on you.
1:08:43 Be confident in God as it concerns others. Unity among Christians is very, very important to God. When Jesus was praying in the garden, what did he pray for? Lord, that they may be one just like we are one and he means it. We should be centered on the cross and pulling people towards the middle.
1:09:07 The truth of cross of the cross is what matters most. Those are the takeaways and I'm going invite Carl and the band back up here and anyone else that wants to be baptized because the cross of Christ is what matters the most. We're centering ourselves on that this morning. Christ lived a perfect life and he voluntarily made a sacrificial offering of his perfect life in your stead. If you've never placed your faith in him, today is the day of salvation.
1:09:37 And would you stand with us as we sing? You're Not where you just have to come down the aisle right now. You're welcome to come anytime. I'm here all the time and there are lots of elders that love to talk to you.
1:09:48 Alright. It's a newer song. Sang it this morning. Invite you to to sing again with us.
1:09:56 When I wake up in the land of glory with the saints I will tell my story there won't be one name that I proclaim Alright, Jesus. Be your name that matters to me. Be your name's favor, see. Be your name that matters to me. Yours won't be the friendship and affection I need.
1:10:38 To feel my father smiling on me, you're the name that matters to me. Yours is the name, the name that'll save me. Mercy and grace, the power that forgave me. Your love is all I'd ever need. When I wake up in the land of glory with the saints, I will tell my story.
1:11:15 There'll be one name that I proclaim. Let's sing the name of Jesus. Jesus. Jesus. Just thy name.
1:11:40 Jesus. Just that name.
1:11:54 We'll sing a few la la's. Alright?
1:12:14 And I wake up in the land of home with the saints. I will tell my story. There be one name that I proclaim. There will be one name. Amen.
1:12:38 May the Lord bless him.
