He Who Began This Good Work Will See It Through

April 22, 2018 · Luke

Scripture referenced 6 passages

The passage this message was preached from, in full, with every other passage it reached for.

  • Luke 13:10-21 the main passage read aloud and expounded upon, covering the healing of the bent woman and the parables of the mustard seed and yeast

10 He was teaching in one of the synagogues on the Sabbath day.

11 Behold, there was a woman who had a spirit of infirmity eighteen years, and she was bent over, and could in no way straighten herself up.

12 When Jesus saw her, he called her, and said to her, “Woman, you are freed from your infirmity.”

13 He laid his hands on her, and immediately she stood up straight, and glorified God.

14 The ruler of the synagogue, being indignant because Jesus had healed on the Sabbath, said to the multitude, “There are six days in which men ought to work. Therefore come on those days and be healed, and not on the Sabbath day!”

15 Therefore the Lord answered him, “You hypocrites! Doesn’t each one of you free his ox or his donkey from the stall on the Sabbath, and lead him away to water?

16 Ought not this woman, being a daughter of Abraham, whom Satan had bound eighteen long years, be freed from this bondage on the Sabbath day?”

17 As he said these things, all his adversaries were disappointed, and all the multitude rejoiced for all the glorious things that were done by him.

18 He said, “What is God’s Kingdom like? To what shall I compare it?

19 It is like a grain of mustard seed, which a man took, and put in his own garden. It grew, and became a large tree, and the birds of the sky live in its branches.”

20 Again he said, “To what shall I compare God’s Kingdom?

21 It is like yeast, which a woman took and hid in three measures of flour, until it was all leavened.”

Recap

The message in order, in a few minutes of reading.

Pastor Ray was out of town for his parents' fiftieth anniversary, so another member of the church family stepped in to lead worship and bring the message. He preached from Luke 13:10-21, focusing on the healing of a bent woman and the parable of the mustard seed, and he tied both together around one question: what does the kingdom of God look like, and can it be trusted?

What was said

The passage opens with Jesus in a synagogue on the Sabbath, where he sees a woman who has been bent double for eighteen years. He calls her over, says "Dear woman, you are healed of your sickness," touches her, and she stands straight. The synagogue leader is furious because it is the Sabbath. Jesus calls him a hypocrite, pointing out that every one of them unties an animal and leads it to water on the Sabbath, and asks whether this daughter of Abraham, held in bondage by Satan for eighteen years, should not be released on the very same day. The crowd rejoiced at what Jesus did; the leader was shamed.

That contrast, between the leader's indignation and the crowd's joy, is where the message pressed in. The leader put the letter of the law before the person in front of him, and that is a pattern easy to see in someone else and hard to see in yourself. The preacher held up a slide Ray had used in a previous sermon showing a list of ways people miss the mark, and said plainly that calling out the synagogue leader means calling out yourself too, because none of us have to work hard to land on that list.

But the whole point of Jesus entering human history, the preacher said, was not to condemn but to save. He returned to that theme more than once: God sent Jesus into the world to save the world, not condemn it. The mercy in the way Jesus spoke to that woman, "dear woman," and the praise that broke out of her, and the rejoicing of the crowd, are all evidence of what happens when a person gets pulled into the center of God's love and truth.

Jesus then moves from the healing into two parables about the kingdom of God. The mustard seed is the one the preacher stayed with. The seed starts tiny, grows into a tree, and birds make nests in its branches. He connected that final image to a passage from Ezekiel where God promises a cedar from which birds of every sort will find shelter, and read it as a prophecy about Jesus and the kingdom, showing that God's intention was always to give all people a place of refuge in the family tree of God.

The preacher described watching an animated map of how Christianity has spread across the world since its small beginning, and spoke about going with a church team to Guatemala and attending an Easter service there. The music was different, the clothes were different, people were dancing, and yet it was the same, because there they were celebrating the death and resurrection of Jesus. That firsthand experience of the body of Christ at work in another part of the world put flesh on the parable for him.

He closed by tying the mustard seed back to Philippians 1:6, the promise that he who began a good work in you will continue it until it is finally finished. Growth is not something that happens all at once. He used the image of an orchid sitting by a window, rarely noticed, and then suddenly there is a new bud. God is doing that work in each person and in the church together, carving people more into the image of Jesus over a lifetime, not in a day.

The final word was from Hebrews, a call to hold tightly without wavering to the hope we affirm, because God can be trusted to keep his promise. The preacher said he had been going through Luke and kept hearing the same question surface: do you trust me? He said he could not find any part of Jesus' life that cannot be trusted, and that is the ground on which the call to hold fast rests.

Doing a Bible study?

Here is a guide we have prepared for you: the passages in order, questions for the group, and room to write.

  1. The worship leader contrasted how the synagogue leader responded to the woman's healing with how the crowd responded. When have you found yourself putting a rule or a principle ahead of the person in front of you, and what did that cost?
  2. He described the marks of maturity in our lives as something we often only notice looking back, like an orchid that quietly grows a new bud. Where do you see evidence, looking back, that God has been at work in you even when you were not aware of it?

9:54 Alrighty, folks. Here we have number seven zero five. It is well with my soul.

It is well, it is well with my soul. My sin oh the bliss of this glorious thought my sin not in part but is nailed to the cross and I bear it no more praise the Lord praise the Lord my soul it is well with my soul it is well it is well with my soul lord haste the day when my faith shall be the trump shall descend even so it is well with my soul it is well with my soul It is well.
12:44 It is well with my soul.
12:51 Wonderful. Alright. This next one is a family favorite of ours, because it's my mom's favorite. So, yeah, when they told me that I was gonna be doing some music, I said, okay, well, we will, but I want to sing this one. So, alright.
13:07 As the deer, number five forty eight.
13:14 As the deer panteth for the water so my soul longeth after thee. You alone are my heart's desire and I long to worship thee. You alone are my strength, my shield. To you alone may my spirit yield. You alone are my heart's desire, and I long to worship thee you're my friend and you are my brother even though a king I love you more than any other so much more than anything.
14:25 My strength, my shield, to you alone may my spirit yield. You alone are my heart's desire and I long to worship thee I want you more than gold or silver only you can satisfy. You alone are the real joy giver and the apple of my eye. You alone are my strength, my shield. To you alone may my spirit You alone are my heart's desire and I long to worship thee.
15:32 Amen.
15:36 You all can be seated and I'll invite the the frontline team to come forward here as we participate in the worship through giving and as we do, I'd like to pray and give thanks. Praise you God. That is our song, but we make it our prayer too. That you are a shield, our strength, the source of joy and life and love. These things all describe you, God, and so much more.
16:03 And so I pray that whenever we give, whatever we give, that all these things would just be an expression, a deep expression from the bottom of our heart to who you are, to what you've done, knowing that we can't earn favor. We don't, earn grace. It is simply your unmerited favor toward us. And I pray that this would be an expression of our our love and our desire to to know you and to grow in you. Even more.
16:39 So would you use these gifts, God? Would you use them to, make yourself known? And would you use us too because you do to make yourself known. I pray that this light here in Jackson would shine bright and to the ends of the earth as well. We're not the only church.
16:58 We're just part of a bigger capital c church. The family of God with branches for everyone to rest in. And I pray that that message would come out loud and clear today. For you so loved the world you gave your son, and whoever believes in you wouldn't perish but have eternal life. That is truth and that is life.
17:20 Thank you. In Jesus name, amen.
21:51 How do we grow? By strength or resolve? Can we make it so? Can we shape the course of our lives according to our purpose and designs? Or add a single hour to the measure of our time?
22:10 How can we ever venture into what is unknown when we are incapable of the smallest change on our own? Looking back over the span of our lives, we can see the marks that testify to how far we've come, how much we've grown, how much of his grace we have been shown, The marks of maturity on our lives, the evidence of the work of Christ, the seed that he has planted in our heart. The Lord has also watered and will refine every part. It is his intention to give it growth. Until it comes to fruition, he has sealed it with his hope that he who began this good work in you will see it through.
23:08 In this lies our hope, not in what we do, but we do not grow alone. Our roots are intertwined one with another so that your strength is mine. While we wait in expectation, no growth can be seen. The tender shoots that so quickly spring up must grow strong, lest
23:35 We
23:45 do that. We for it's in his goodness that we trust to and hold fast to our commitment, resting in his faithfulness to us. His goal is for our good. On this, our assurance falls that he who began this good war will surely make it grow tall.
24:15 I really, really like that poem, and I just wanna repeat some of it because I think it's worth repeating. Looking back over the span of our lives, we see the marks that testify to how far we've come, how much we've grown, how much of his grace that we've been shown. The marks of maturity on our lives, the evidence of the work of Christ, the seed that he planted in our heart, the Lord has also watered and will refine every part. It's his intention to give it growth until it comes to fruition. He sealed it with his oath that he who began this good work in you will see it through, and this lies our hope.
24:59 It's really good. And in today's text, Jesus is gonna say that the kingdom of God is like this tiny mustard seed. It starts small, It grows into a tree. She made me think of that poem, but also this verse right here from Philippians one six. Does this sound familiar?
25:18 That he who began the good work in you will continue his work until it's finally finished on the day when Jesus returns. We are a work in progress, my friends. We have not arrived. God is working. He's carving us more into the image of Jesus, and it doesn't happen in one day.
25:39 It's on this little seed that continues to grow and grow and grow and to become a tree. And you know what else? That tree has a lot of branches on it, and it is ready for the family of God. There's plenty of room on the branches for everyone who would believe. So that's where we're going today.
25:59 We are in Luke thirteen ten to 21. I want to focus on the parable of the mustard seed. And as we do, I want you to just consider this, I want to put this out in front us one more time that every teaching, that every parable, that every word from God will do this right here. From Isaiah, will prosper, it will produce fruit, and it will accomplish everything that God intends. His word really is more powerful than we know, more powerful than my dull personality up here in front of you.
26:37 He can communicate these things and drive them home with his Holy Spirit through his word so much better than I can. And so know that as we're reading the word, this is God's inspired word to us. It is living and active. It is full of life giving truth. All right.
26:56 So that in mind, here we are Luke thirteen ten to 21. This is what it says. On one Sabbath day as Jesus was teaching in the synagogue, he saw a woman who'd been crippled by an evil spirit. She'd been bent double for eighteen years and was unable to stand up straight. When Jesus called or sorry, when Jesus saw her, he called her over and said, dear woman, you are healed of your sickness.
27:25 Then he touched her and instantly she could stand straight. How she praised God. But the leader in charge of the synagogue was indignant that Jesus had healed her on the Sabbath day. There are six days of the week for working, he said to the crowd, come on those days to be healed, not the Sabbath. But the Lord replied, you hypocrites.
27:47 Each of you works on the Sabbath day. Don't you untie your ox or your donkey from its stall on the Sabbath and lead it up for water? This dear woman, a daughter of Abraham, has been held in bondage by Satan for eighteen years. Isn't it right that she'd be released even on the Sabbath? This shamed his enemies, but all the people rejoiced at the wonderful things he did.
28:11 Then Jesus said, what is the kingdom of God like? How can I illustrate it? It's like a tiny mustard seed that a man planted in a garden. It grows and it becomes a tree and the birds make nests in its branches. He also asked, what else is the kingdom of God like?
28:30 It's like the yeast a woman used in making bread. Even though she put only a little yeast and three measures of flour, it permeated every part of the dough. Let's pray on that before we go farther. God, I do pray for that you'd bless the reading of the word. I thank you for your mercy, for your compassion, for your truth, that you are the visible image of the invisible God.
28:55 Come to save the world, not condemn it. And it gives you great happiness to give us your kingdom. Thank you for being a light to the nations. To every people group in the world, please take the seed that you planted and continue to do the good work that you've started in us individually and us collectively as a church body. In Jesus name, amen.
29:21 This is a verse that I revisit often. That God sent Jesus into the world to save the world, not condemn it. And I'd like to put that out in front of us again that almighty infinite creator God through the work of his son Jesus used his power and authority. For a second, can you imagine having that much power and authority? What happens to that when when people, this ordinary people get a hold of some kind of power like that?
29:55 We're talking about Jesus here using his power and authority to save the world, not condemn it. And I wanna get us thinking in that direction. I wanna get us moving in that direction because that's what Jesus did. He came to save not condemn out of love and mercy. Look, he calls out dear woman, you heal of your sickness.
30:18 It's just the mercy and the generosity of God leaning toward us saving, not condemning. Now contrast that with verse 14. Look at this, the leader in charge of the synagogue was indignant that Jesus had healed her on the Sabbath day. So that'd be like Ray and I getting angry. I can't imagine that happening, but getting angry that this hey this is a day of rest.
30:49 We don't do those kind of things here, putting the law before the person, putting the letter of the law not the meaning of the law. When I when I read this, this is kind of the picture that comes to my mind. You know an angry person shooting arrows missing the mark, And I get I don't know if it's for you, but if you read the scripture you tend to get wrapped up in a little bit and your emotions start to come out. And when I do, look at it and go, oh man, you missed it. But if I call him out, do you know who else I have to call out?
31:26 Me. I've got to call me out too because I missed the mark. Like Ray said, in a sermon a while back, doesn't this look like Ray slide right here? That if we can't see how we've fallen short on that list on the left, then we're just not looking hard enough. All we have to do is be human to land there.
31:51 I can tell you, it's not hard to get angry. It's not hard to be jealous. It's not hard to be selfish. I don't have to work very hard for those things to happen, they just happen. Here's the point though, is that when we yield our will to God's will.
32:12 When we put it in neutral, we yield our self to him. We begin to exchange what's on the left for what's on the right. The old nature for the new. Like Bobby often say, the walking around man for a spirit led person. Does that make sense?
32:36 And God is beginning to make us look more and more like Jesus. It doesn't happen all in one day. It happens over our lifetime. I don't know if you've ever grown anything in your house, but it's hard to see the growth sometimes. And then like we've got this orchid in our house and sits by the window, and I really rarely notice it, but then suddenly I will go, wait a minute, that thing just grew another bud, this flower is beautiful.
33:07 It's been hanging in there for a long time, it really loves its little place at the window. But the point is, get what I'm saying. You don't see all that growth in in in one moment. It often happens over a long period of time. And God's making us more like Jesus who hit that mark every time.
33:29 Hit the center of the mark in his life, in his walk every time. And I think about who are we without him? A lot of times we don't even know where we're aiming. We don't even know where we're headed. We'll just kind of wander and do what seems right.
33:53 And in the end, well, we've all been there. We've all hit dead ends, right? And I can say that for me. We've all hit dead ends. But God gives us a place to aim at, and it's where Jesus hit the center every single time.
34:10 As we yield our will to his, he's pulling us toward the center of his love and his truth. And so my prayer for us, you know, as I read this is that whenever we come across the generosity of God, the mercy of God, the perfection of Jesus, all he is, all those things would be pulling us toward the center of his love and truth. They would stir our affections toward Jesus. And and like this woman in in the story, here's the evidence of it. How she praised God.
34:44 That's an honest, sincere, from the gut reaction of being pulled into the center of God's love and truth. The crowd, how they rejoiced at the wonderful things he did. I love being a worship leader for these reasons right here. We get to sing God's truths together of all that God has done. We get to sing it out.
35:07 We get to express it. The evidence of God pulling toward the center of his love of truth. And I wanna focus, more on the parable of the mustard seed because this is where he goes. What is the kingdom of God like? How can I illustrate it?
35:23 Jesus says. It's like the tiny mustard seed that a man planted in a garden, it grows and it becomes a tree and the birds make nests in its branches. There are a few references to mustard seeds in the gospel. The one that I've heard most often is if we have faith as small of a mustard seed that nothing is impossible for God. I've heard that one a lot and I love it.
35:48 It's great. It's inspiring. It's true. This reference is different. The mustard seed in this parable represents God's kingdom.
36:00 It's small beginning. Think about it. It's small beginning. Jesus enters into human history. He grows into a man.
36:10 He starts calling these believers one by one, and it starts growing and growing and growing and it becomes a tree. It's expanding. And it will continue to expand until Jesus returns. I found a animated map that shows how Christianity has spread around the world, and I thought it was a a good visual of this parable. And so, Blake, can we see if if we can play this animated video of how Christianity spread around the world?
38:33 I thought that was a really good visual. And it's powerful, isn't it? How God's kingdom has spread and expanded all over the world. Most studies show that there's about 2,000,000,000 Christians in the world today, about a third of the world's population. And so the parable definitely holds true.
38:52 Small mustard seed beginning, it's been growing and expanding all over the world. It really was for me a privilege to be able to go with the team to Guatemala and see firsthand the body of Christ at work in a different part of the world. I'd I'd always been on this end and sending people out for years and years and to actually be able to go there and see it firsthand was really powerful. And some got to visit at a Easter service, and it was different, and it was different music and people were dancing and they were wearing different clothes and it was a different experience and yet the same because there they were celebrating the death and the resurrection of Jesus. It really is a powerful thing that to know that other believers all over the world are part of this big family tree of God, which is why this little ending part of verse 19 caught my attention.
40:00 It doesn't seem like it's saying much, but it's saying a lot. The birds make nests in its branches. Small phrase, I wondered, why would he add that? Or he could have stopped at the seed grows, it becomes a tree, right? Small kingdom gets bigger.
40:19 But the birds make nests in its branches. And I found a few old testament references using the same language for what God intends his kingdom to be. This one is from Ezekiel. This is what the sovereign Lord says. I'll take a branch from the top of a tall cedar and I'll plant in the top of Israel's highest mountain.
40:39 It will become a majestic cedar sending forth its branches and producing seed. Catch this part. Birds of every sort will nest in it, finding shelter in the shade of its branches. You know what that is? It's a prophecy about who?
40:57 About Jesus and the kingdom of God, showing God's desire to give all people a place of refuge and safety in the family tree of God. I go back to this verse right here in Luke twelve thirty two, it says, it gives your father great happiness to give you the kingdom. To give us the kingdom. Let's try to I I don't believe we really can, but let's let's attempt to wrap our minds around that that God is giving his kingdom to us. We don't earn it.
41:35 We don't deserve it. We receive it by the grace of God through faith in Jesus. It comes back to the good news of the gospel. Everything comes back to the good news of the gospel. That Jesus lived a perfect life.
41:54 That life we could not live. He hit the center of the mark in his life and his walk. He gave us the that point, that place to aim for. He died a sacrificial death in our place for us and that was meant for us. He took it on himself.
42:13 He was buried. He rose from death. So that through his death, we are raised to life as he has. As I'm up on stage and I'm looking back here, there'll be Sundays where we take these these things off and fit with this thing is filled with water and somebody will be baptized. And I think what a powerful illustration, so simple.
42:38 It's just water, but what a powerful illustration baptism is because it represents dying to ourselves. We go into the water. Raised to new life with Jesus, we come out of the water. It's all the grace of God. Being buried with Christ, being raised with him as he lives.
43:05 And again, I would encourage us to see God's kingdom for what it is. It is a big family tree of God, much bigger than any of us and God invites us to rest in it, to find our home in it. He came to save not condemn. Let's be thinking in that direction. Let's be moving in that direction.
43:31 If Jesus being perfect came to save not condemn, well, what should our goal be? Well, to heal, not hurt. This tree, this kingdom of God, this can't be cut down either. It's been growing and expanding exponentially since Jesus established it. And it will continue to grow until until he returns.
44:04 Be confident in that. Know that. This family tree is gonna continue on. And there's gotta be something to it if there are over 2,000,000, 2,000,000,000 believers in in the world today. But it's not about numbers.
44:18 It's about the truth that the gospel works. That it really does bring forgiveness, and peace, and hope, and light. And Jesus is pulling us toward the center of his love and truth. That's his design. Because we will miss the mark if if if we're out on our own just to our own devices, we're gonna miss the mark.
44:42 We may be kind of excited about that little journey we take, but eventually, we'll miss the mark. But Jesus is aiming us toward the sin. He's aiming us toward love. He's aiming us toward truth. He's aiming us toward life.
45:00 So I wanna encourage you from this verse in Hebrews. This is what I wanna end on. Let us hold tightly without wavering to the hope that we affirm. If you have affirmed this hope, if you have grabbed hold of it, if you've grown up with it, stay with it, stay the course unswervingly because God can be trusted to keep his promise. Look at the life and the ministry of Jesus, and I've been asking myself lately, is there any part of Jesus life that I can't trust?
45:33 Because as I'm going through Luke, I keep seeing this theme of trust pop up over and over and over again. I'm hearing him say, do you trust me? Do you trust me? Do you trust me? And yet I don't see any part of Jesus life that can't be trusted.
45:51 All I see is a God who can be trusted. And so, let us hold tightly without wavering to the hope that we affirm for God can be trusted to keep his promise. That's what I've got for you this morning. I really do hope it's encouraging to you. And holding tightly to this hope, but as we have opportunity and friends, have opportunity to share this hope with people around us.
46:20 Because there is plenty of room, more room than we know on the family tree of God for all who. Amen to that? So let's let's pray on this and I'm gonna invite Judy and Jake back up. We're gonna sing one more song and I really like this one. It's I'm so glad to be a part of the family of God.
46:42 And we're gonna sing that a couple times, I I wanna I'd like to pray first. God, I thank you for these nuggets of truth, for the good news of the gospel, for your perfect life, for aiming us to the center of your love and truth. I pray for more of that. We have missed the mark and we confess that we miss the mark. But God, you are gracious, slow to anger and full of unfailing love.
47:10 And, I pray that the more we see of you and the more that we yield our will to yours, that you would carve us into the image of Jesus, that you would aim us right at the center of the target. But we need you in this, that's what our prayer is that you'd help us as we yield our will, to look more like you and experience this life that you are giving. This you're true. You're right. You're forgiving.
47:51 You're full of life. You're offering us eternity. Lord let's go there with you, in Jesus name, amen.
48:05 Number four nineteen.
48:08 I'm so glad I'm a part of the family of God. I've been washed in the fountain, cleansed by his blood, join heirs with Jesus as we travel this odd for I'm part of the family the family of God I'm so glad I'm a part of the family of God I've been washed in the fountain cleansed by his blood joint heirs with Jesus as we travel this odd for I'm part of the family the family God
49:11 Isn't that great though really to be a part of the family of God? Let me leave you with this. Let us hold tightly without wavering to the hope we affirm for God can be trusted to keep his promise. Amen.
