Psalm 34

primary text for the sermon, walked through the entire psalm

1 I will bless Yahweh at all times. His praise will always be in my mouth.

2 My soul shall boast in Yahweh. The humble shall hear of it, and be glad.

3 Oh magnify Yahweh with me. Let us exalt his name together.

4 I sought Yahweh, and he answered me, and delivered me from all my fears.

5 They looked to him, and were radiant. Their faces shall never be covered with shame.

6 This poor man cried, and Yahweh heard him, and saved him out of all his troubles.

7 Yahweh’s angel encamps around those who fear him, and delivers them.

8 Oh taste and see that Yahweh is good. Blessed is the man who takes refuge in him.

9 Oh fear Yahweh, you his saints, for there is no lack with those who fear him.

10 The young lions do lack, and suffer hunger, but those who seek Yahweh shall not lack any good thing.

11 Come, you children, listen to me. I will teach you the fear of Yahweh.

12 Who is someone who desires life, and loves many days, that he may see good?

13 Keep your tongue from evil, and your lips from speaking lies.

14 Depart from evil, and do good. seek peace, and pursue it.

15 Yahweh’s eyes are toward the righteous. His ears listen to their cry.

16 Yahweh’s face is against those who do evil, to cut off their memory from the earth.

17 The righteous cry, and Yahweh hears, and delivers them out of all their troubles.

18 Yahweh is near to those who have a broken heart, and saves those who have a crushed spirit.

19 Many are the afflictions of the righteous, but Yahweh delivers him out of them all.

20 He protects all of his bones. Not one of them is broken.

21 Evil shall kill the wicked. Those who hate the righteous shall be condemned.

22 Yahweh redeems the soul of his servants. None of those who take refuge in him shall be condemned.

1 Samuel 21:10-15

background context for Psalm 34, David fleeing Saul and feigning madness before Achish king of Gath

10 David arose, and fled that day for fear of Saul, and went to Achish the king of Gath.

11 The servants of Achish said to him, “Isn’t this David the king of the land? Didn’t they sing to one another about him in dances, saying, ‘Saul has slain his thousands, and David his ten thousands?’”

12 David laid up these words in his heart, and was very afraid of Achish the king of Gath.

13 He changed his behavior before them, and pretended to be insane in their hands, and scribbled on the doors of the gate, and let his spittle fall down on his beard.

14 Then Achish said to his servants, “Look, you see the man is insane. Why then have you brought him to me?

15 Do I lack madmen, that you have brought this fellow to play the madman in my presence? Should this fellow come into my house?”

Ephesians 5

Paul instructs speaking to one another in psalms and hymns and spiritual songs, singing and making melody with your heart unto the Lord, always giving thanks

1 Be therefore imitators of God, as beloved children.

2 Walk in love, even as Christ also loved you, and gave himself up for us, an offering and a sacrifice to God for a sweet-smelling fragrance.

3 But sexual immorality, and all uncleanness, or covetousness, let it not even be mentioned among you, as becomes saints;

4 nor filthiness, nor foolish talking, nor jesting, which are not appropriate; but rather giving of thanks.

5 Know this for sure, that no sexually immoral person, nor unclean person, nor covetous man, who is an idolater, has any inheritance in the Kingdom of Christ and God.

6 Let no one deceive you with empty words. For because of these things, the wrath of God comes on the children of disobedience.

7 Therefore don’t be partakers with them.

8 For you were once darkness, but are now light in the Lord. Walk as children of light,

9 for the fruit of the Spirit is in all goodness and righteousness and truth,

10 proving what is well pleasing to the Lord.

11 Have no fellowship with the unfruitful deeds of darkness, but rather even reprove them.

12 For the things which are done by them in secret, it is a shame even to speak of.

13 But all things, when they are reproved, are revealed by the light, for everything that reveals is light.

14 Therefore he says, “Awake, you who sleep, and arise from the dead, and Christ will shine on you.”

15 Therefore watch carefully how you walk, not as unwise, but as wise;

16 redeeming the time, because the days are evil.

17 Therefore don’t be foolish, but understand what the will of the Lord is.

18 Don’t be drunken with wine, in which is dissipation, but be filled with the Spirit,

19 speaking to one another in psalms, hymns, and spiritual songs; singing, and making melody in your heart to the Lord;

20 giving thanks always concerning all things in the name of our Lord Jesus Christ, to God, even the Father;

21 subjecting yourselves to one another in the fear of Christ.

22 Wives, be subject to your own husbands, as to the Lord.

23 For the husband is the head of the wife, as Christ also is the head of the assembly, being himself the savior of the body.

24 But as the assembly is subject to Christ, so let the wives also be to their own husbands in everything.

25 Husbands, love your wives, even as Christ also loved the assembly, and gave himself up for it;

26 that he might sanctify it, having cleansed it by the washing of water with the word,

27 that he might present the assembly to himself gloriously, not having spot or wrinkle or any such thing; but that it should be holy and without defect.

28 Even so husbands also ought to love their own wives as their own bodies. He who loves his own wife loves himself.

29 For no man ever hated his own flesh; but nourishes and cherishes it, even as the Lord also does the assembly;

30 because we are members of his body, of his flesh and bones.

31 “For this cause a man will leave his father and mother, and will be joined to his wife. The two will become one flesh.”

32 This mystery is great, but I speak concerning Christ and of the assembly.

33 Nevertheless each of you must also love his own wife even as himself; and let the wife see that she respects her husband.

Recap

The message in order, in a few minutes of reading.

Pastor Carl walked through all of Psalm 34, tracing how a song David wrote after escaping the Philistine king Achish still speaks directly into grief, celebration, fear, and uncertainty. The context was David on the run from Saul, slipping into enemy territory and faking madness to get away alive. From that unlikely place came one of Israel's most enduring songs of praise.

What was said

The sermon opened with the backstory from 1 Samuel 21. David had fled Saul, whose jealousy had grown murderous, and ended up in Gath, the hometown of Goliath. The Philistines recognized him, so David drooled on himself and scratched at the gate until the king dismissed him as just another madman. Pastor Carl noted that some commentators treat this as sin, but his read was simpler: David needed a way out, and he found one.

What makes Psalm 34 remarkable is where David goes from there. Instead of writing about the close call, he opens with "I will bless the Lord at all times, His praise shall continually be in my mouth." Pastor Carl pointed out that this is not a fair-weather vow. David is still a fugitive when he writes it. The praise comes first, before the situation is resolved.

That opening line connects to a thread running through Paul's letters. Ephesians calls the church to speak to one another in Psalms, hymns, and spiritual songs. Thessalonians says to give thanks in everything, because that is God's will in Christ Jesus. Pastor Carl held those together: gratitude is not a feeling you wait for, it is a posture you choose, and from it comes the joy the Psalm keeps pointing toward.

The middle section of the Psalm, "taste and see that the Lord is good," became the hinge of the message. Pastor Carl brought in Jeremiah 29, the passage behind the well-known verse about plans for welfare and not for calamity. He pressed into the context that surrounds it: God is speaking to people already in exile, already in a place they did not choose and do not like. The promise comes inside the difficulty, not after it ends. Seeking God with a whole heart, holding nothing back in reserve, is what opens a person to the full weight of that promise.

The Psalm's instruction to keep the tongue from evil and to pursue peace rather than hold grudges was treated as practical ground-level obedience. Pastor Carl framed it in terms of forgiveness: since we are forgiven in Christ, we are supposed to be the first ones to move toward any impasse, not the ones waiting for the other side to blink.

The closing verses of the Psalm were read as pointing past David's own circumstances toward Christ. The line about not one bone being broken lands directly on the crucifixion account, where the soldiers found Jesus had already given up His spirit and so passed Him by. "Many are the afflictions of the righteous, but the Lord delivers him out of them all" applies first to the Righteous One Himself, and then, to the extent anyone suffers for Christ, it applies to them.

The sermon landed on the Psalm's final assurance: the Lord redeems the soul of His servants, and none who take refuge in Him will be condemned. Pastor Carl tied that back to where the message had been all morning, funerals, weddings, a meeting about a new church plant, missionaries coming off the field. Psalm 34 kept showing up because it was written by someone in genuine danger who chose praise anyway, and that choice is available to anyone who is going through it right now.

Doing a Bible study?

Here is a guide we have prepared for you: the passages in order, questions for the group, and room to write.

  1. Pastor Carl opened Psalm 34 by noting that David wrote it after faking madness to escape from Achish, king of Gath. When have you found yourself turning to God or to praise in an unexpected or desperate situation, and what did that look like for you?
  2. The sermon pointed to the line 'his praise shall continually be in my mouth' and connected it to Paul's instructions in Ephesians about speaking to one another in psalms, hymns and spiritual songs, and to the command in Thessalonians to give thanks in everything. What does it actually look like, day to day, to keep praise and gratitude going during a hard season rather than just in good times?

4:16 We're on songs and Psalms. And so we're singing and saying Psalms and going through that and dinner's on. Don't know what yet. In fact, we're looking for a cook. Somebody, otherwise it's fried chicken or pizza or something like that.
4:31 But when you think of something better and you wanna help, please do. But, no, the door's open. 06:00 tomorrow. Alright.
4:36 Thank you very much. Vacation Bible school. If you have not noticed, we have decorated for vacation Bible school. So that's happened. It starts tomorrow morning, 09:00 to twelve noon, nine in the morning to twelve noon.
4:48 It's gonna be all week this week, Monday through Friday. And if you, wanna sign somebody up, there's still time. You can still bring and add names to the list. We're hoping to get as many kids as possible. And there are probably some spaces that you could fill in for volunteers, but they have a lot of people that came in yesterday decorated, getting ready.
5:06 That's gonna be fun. Miraculous mission, Jesus saves the world, VBS. There is a color run. Do y'all know what that is? Kinda?
5:15 Yeah. They shoot powder at you at intervals. Right? That's the way that works? I thought it was just because it was the colors because it's a July 4 kinda leading up to that event.
5:25 But no, they actually are gonna douse you with colors as you go. A patriotic color run, June 29, that starts at 10:07 at the Jackson Hole High School Stadium. That's a Young Life sponsored event, so that's gonna be fun. So if you are a runner, five k, go. And if you're not, go anyway.
5:44 Alright? It's good. Young life is great. Immigrant hope is still raising as many shoes as they can get. Our office is evidence of that.
5:52 There are quite a few shoes, but keep on bringing them in. I had somebody ask yesterday, is it still okay? Can I still bring them? Yes. Yes.
5:59 Yes. So we're still working on that for immigrant hope. Volunteers are needed. We are gonna take a stateside mission trip July the tenth through the thirteenth. That's coming quick.
6:09 July tenth through thirteenth. I'm going. Who will go with me? Alright. There's there's Diane is going.
6:15 Gary's going. We've got a few more. Steve, Andy. Alright. Anybody else?
6:20 Can I yes? I see that hand. Yes. I see that hand. Alright.
6:23 There's a there is it's gonna be fun. We're taking the church van and as many other vehicles as we need to get up there. I do now have the list, the punch list of the things that we need to cover, which is always nice when you're going into a project and know what to expect. So if you wanna go, July tenth through thirteenth, Gary's right there at the back at the door. Would you wave?
6:43 Talk to Gary, we'll put you on the list. Turning Points, annual fundraising gala is happening. Melissa how do you say that name? There's a lady. Melissa Odin, I think it is, is coming to speak for dinner and a presentation that's coming up.
7:03 That'll be July 11, so that's overlapping with our mission trip, but it's Turning Point's annual fundraising gala. That's happening. Directory updates. This is Nick Stern.
7:16 There you go. Hey.
7:18 Hey. Hey. Good Hey. Morning, everybody. Every year, we pass around the directory.
7:21 And if you could just look through these, we'll pass one down this aisle, one down this aisle, and just have it end up at the sound booth back there. Look through that. And if your information needs to be updated, scratch out the old information. Put in the new information. And if you're brand new to us, won't you put in your information and then let us know to take a photo of you too.
7:39 Because working here, people are in and out all the time, and it's kind of our little cheat sheet. Ray does want you to know this is how we know who you are. So please do help us out by putting your name in there if you can. At least look it over and then send it out to the back for us. Thanks very much.
7:52 Thank you.
7:53 Alright. That's good. If you miss a message, they are are available online. Firstbjackson.org is where the audio messages are available, but there's also a Facebook page. That's a Facebook live stream that happens almost every week, and you can go back and catch those if you miss them.
8:13 Wow, connect hour. That's a get a charge. The connect hour. Between services, we have but from ten ish to around eleven ish, there's a connect hour down there with coffee and donuts and good stuff for you too if you wanna go down and just connect with people between services. Anything else should be in the bulletin.
8:34 There is one other announcement. Shane, would you and Michelle come up? Like, they are these are some unsung heroes of the faith right here. In their life and ministry, they have been here in Jackson for a long time. It's been a long haul.
8:52 Shane has been leading the prison or the jail ministry here, and he's been going on Sunday nights at 08:00 for a long time and this week, I ended up doing a funeral for Brian's mother. Brian's been helping for quite some time and I just wanted to say thank you to them but they're also heading out. So, I'd like to, if y'all would, we lay hands on people to send them out in ministry all the time. I just appreciate you. We don't talk about all of everything everybody does all the time but as y'all head out, I want to pray for you.
9:22 If we would, y'all pray with me. God, I thank you for both Shane and Michelle and what you're doing in their lives and through their lives and lord, I pray that that would not stop when they're when they depart here from Jackson but as they go forward, lord, I pray that you'd show em step by step the way that they would continue walking the journey of faith and I pray lord that they would sense your presence and your blessing that your praise would be as we'll talk about this morning continually in their mouth, and Lord, that they would be effective and productive ministers of your good gospel. I pray that you'd give them peace and comfort as they head out from this place forward. In Jesus' name, Lord, we ask your blessing. Amen.
10:07 Amen. Love y'all. Thank you. I think that's it. If y'all would, get up and greet one another too and we'll bring you back together with a song.
11:18 You have been so so good to me. For chases me downright still, and I found these the nine to nine. I couldn't earn it. I don't deserve it. Still, you gave yourself away.
12:10 On the overwhelming, ever ending with this love of God. But I want your phone,
12:38 When I feel no way, you paid it off for me. And you have been so so
12:50 kind. Good The overwhelming, ever ending, reckless love of God. Oh, which
15:40 Amen. Let's let's pray on that, shall we? God, as we sing that song, I can't think of you but being light and being truth, that there's no lie that you wouldn't tear down to to get to us. And, Lord, as we, look into your truth and and as we look at you as light this morning, I pray that we would see more and more just how generous and loving and kind, and merciful that you truly are. That all of your promises and every one of them is yes and amen.
16:13 Second Corinthians, for all of God's promises have been fulfilled in Christ with a resounding yes. And through Christ, our amen ascends to God for his glory.
18:33 And in your promises. My confidence is your faithfulness. I will rest in your promise.
20:19 Pray on that again. God, you truly are faithful. And I thank you for calling us to this sweet fellowship with you that, through absolutely everything, you are constant. And you are strong, and you are our shield, and you are our strength. And truly, your promises are yes and amen.
20:39 Everything that you say is true, and you can be trusted. Amen. Amen. Psalm 34. Ray's gonna be here today in the scripture but I want to sing of it before we read of it.
20:53 Psalm thirty four eight. Does this this sound familiar to you? Taste and see that the Lord is good. Isn't that so true? Taste and see that the Lord is good.
21:04 Oh the joys of those who take refuge in him. Joys. Church, there is joy in the Lord. Amen.
21:56 The Lord her deed and save me from my end of the song.
25:56 Y'all can have a seat. God almighty, we thank you and we praise you and lord, it's exciting to be together in your name. I I think about that Psalm. Lord, magnify the Lord with me. If we are solo and in a very very desperate situation, lord, we can cry out to you and lord, you do answer but when we are together, lord, may we always be magnifying your name and be making the claim, making the claim lord to what you have done.
26:30 In Jesus name, lord, we ask you that you'd remind us that your praise would continually be in our mouth and on our lips. I pray lord that we would look to you. You're the author, you're the perfecter, the finisher of our faith. Lord, you know what we need and you give it. In Jesus name, lord, I ask that you bless this offering that you would share that through us.
26:55 You'd share this good gospel through us, lord. May everything that goes into these plates be effective and productive for the ongoing of your kingdom. Lord, in Jesus name, we trust your word and though we walk through the valley of the shadow, lord, we'll fear no evil but we'll turn continually to you, and we know, Lord, that we will be without lack. In Jesus' name, we ask your blessing on this offering this morning. Amen.
30:56 They comfort me. They comfort me. They comfort
31:22 Amen. Thank you. So, Carl's been doing Psalms and Psalms. We had a missionary speak last Monday night but before that, for a couple of weeks, he's been doing songs and Psalms and Psalms, of course, are songs. It's Israel's hymn book And as we were going through, I've been concentrating a lot of effort on reading the Psalms lately, and it's got something for every human emotion in there.
31:45 No doubt about it. But Psalm 34 has been echoing. I finished second Peter last week in our chronological New Testament study, and we're going towards Hebrews but Hebrews, that is a full grown up portion, alright? So, before I started, I want to study for a couple extra weeks. So, this week, we're going to go to Psalm 34.
32:08 We'll go through the whole Psalm. We just sang it a few minutes ago, not the whole of the Psalm. In this week, just since we were last together, I've been in a a part of a meeting about the possibility of a new church, a new church plant, a fellowship group. We don't know what it's going to look like but that was right after this service last week and then, from there, going and being with missionaries who are home, you got to meet em last week and talking through some of the difficulties of coming off the field and so there's these kind of hills and valleys, right? On Friday afternoon, I got to do a funeral for someone.
32:53 I I love the son of the woman that passed, and I got to meet her about three years ago and have been getting to know her over the past two years. Precious little lady that passed away and so, did a funeral with a grieving family that all love the Lord because of their mama, right? And then, got to do a wedding yesterday. Psalm 34 fit every single one of em. In fact, when I got to the wedding yesterday and we were doing, it was actually at Chapel Of The Sacred Heart.
33:24 Ben, Walter, and Sarah Rock got married if y'all don't know them or if you do know them and as we're getting to the responsorial Psalm, you know, we have an Old Testament passage from Song of Solomon, how fitting for a wedding, great and then we had this Psalm and I flipped to it and it's Psalm 34. Put to music by the grooms he composed. The groom's brother composed Psalm 34 to music and then it was sung by one of the teachers that teaches with him at the classical school and it was just beautiful. Just plain beautiful and Psalm 34, there it is again I I can tell you the reason why it fits but I'm going to go into some context and background here for just a second. So, this says, if you look at the attribution or the lead off line in most Bibles, it says this, Psalm 34, a Psalm of David, when he feigned madness before Abimelek, who drove him away and he departed.
34:22 What a weird time to write a song. One would think but it fits and it fits very well. So, you might also see it named this, a name heading in my Bible is the Lord, a provider and deliverer. Okay. Now, it's starting to make sense why it makes sense in so many occasions.
34:42 The context from first Samuel, this is a quick little story just 10 through 15 of Samuel 21. Then, David arose and he fled that day from Saul because Saul wanted to kill him. There have been some people singing a song. Songs are powerful, right? Do you agree?
34:59 Songs can be really powerful. So, there's a little song that was going around Israel and Saul was the king, big, big, big man, right? He's the king. He's the one in charge and yet the song that's going around Israel, something along the lines of Saul has slain his thousands but David, his tens of thousands. David, this as a little boy fights Goliath and they retell that story over and over and then he's a leader into battle on a lot of occasions and Saul becomes very very jealous.
35:30 He also had been dabbling in other things. He certainly turned his face away from God. David's already been anointed but David's also loyal to his king but he's the king is super jealous and David realized that he has to get away or Saul's going to kill him Then, David arose and he fled that day from Saul and he went to Achish, king of Gath but the servants of Achish said to him, is this not David, the king of the land? Did they not sing of this one as they dance, saying Saul has slain his thousands and David is tens of thousands. David took these words to heart and he greatly feared Achish, the king of Gath.
36:14 So, he knew that his reputation preceded him. He was trying to get away from Saul. He was actually fleeing Gath is in the land of the Philistines. These are the folks that he has whipped their giant, right? When he was a boy, he's now a man and he is in the process of trying to get away from Saul.
36:31 So, where will they not look? Well, it probably won't look in the Philistines camp. So, he goes and then he hears that these guys recognize me. They didn't have Instagram. They didn't have Facebook.
36:44 They didn't have, you know, a web search. Who knows what David looks like? We've heard of him but they recognized him and they knew who he was and so he was kind of scared. So, he disguised his sanity before them and he acted insanely in their hands. He scribbled on the doors of the gate and he let his saliva run down into his beard.
37:06 Isn't that weird? And then Achish, who is the king, says to his servants, behold, you see this man behaving as a madman. Why do you bring him to me? They're bringing him because he's the already anointed David warrior, and it would be a real trophy if they were to just capture him. Right?
37:29 So he says, you see this guy behaving as a madman. Why do you bring him to me? Do I lack madmen? Aren't there enough crazy people around here already? We're full up.
37:42 Do I lack men? Do I lack madmen that you have brought this one to act the madman in my presence? Shall this one come also into my house He's like, get that guy away from me and he got away Now, there's all the commentators that write about this say, David sent. David sent. He sent and then I would say, no, it wasn't sin.
38:03 That was smooth. He got away from somebody that could have killed him, captured him, held on to him, made fun of Israel and their God because they had him. I don't care whether he did or didn't. He got away. That was the point, right?
38:18 Now, I don't think he sinned. I think that he was just looking for a way out and he was like, This is Psalm 34. It starts off. I will bless the Lord at all times. So, for a funeral, Psalm 34 was appropriate.
38:32 So, for a wedding, Psalm 34 was appropriate. When you're acting like a madman and you get away from a bad guy, appropriate. His praise shall continually be in my mouth. When I open my mouth, what comes out of it is praise to God. I love that.
38:50 The Psalms are full of those sort of references. Let everything that has breath. Praise the Lord. You take in atmosphere and when you breathe it out, praise God Oh, so nice Actually, spirit in the New Testament and in the Old Testament especially, there's this raw. That's what spirit, the word for spirit is raw.
39:14 It's when you breathe out, you're breathing. Praise to God. He's let me have another one. Another night, another day, another breath. Praise God.
39:22 I will bless the Lord at all times. His praise shall continually be in my mouth. Paul picks that up in Ephesians and he instructs us to look into the Psalms. It's the hymn book. Of Israel, it's it's our hymn book too.
39:38 Speaking to one another in what? In Psalms and in hymns and in spiritual songs, singing and making melody with your heart unto the Lord. Always giving thanks for all things in the name of our Lord Jesus Christ to God even the father. Always giving thanks for all things. Your praise will continually be in my mouth.
40:00 Thessalonians says the same thing. In everything, gives thanks. Sometimes, there are bad things that happen. There is no doubt. We've all experienced that but he says, in the midst of those things, give thanks.
40:12 For this is God's will for you in Christ Jesus. How many of y'all are praying for God's will? God, show me your will. God, show me your will. This is God's will for you in Christ Jesus and everything.
40:23 Give thanks. Gratitude is a great basis because from a place of gratitude, we can have joy. Psalm 34 continues on. I'll bless the Lord at all times. His praise shall continually be in my mouth.
40:38 My soul, deepest part of our being, my soul will make its boast in the Lord and the humble, those who are meek and humble and able to receive, they will hear it and they will rejoice. So, if you know the extent of the goodness of God and without him, the wickedness of your soul, you'll hear another person making its boast in the Lord and you'll rejoice. Praise God Paul picks that up in first Corinthians two so that just it is written, let him who boast, let him boast in the Lord Jeremiah nine twenty four says, but let him who boast boast of this that he understands and knows and this is from God directly through his prophet Jeremiah but let him who boast, let him boast or brag about this that he understand and he knows me and that I am the Lord who exercises what? Loving kindness and justice and righteousness on earth for I delight in these things, declares the Lord. Amen.
41:46 He delights in loving kindness and justice and righteousness. Psalm 34 goes on and says, oh magnify the Lord with me. Where do we get that verse of that song, Carl? The chorus of the one saying Psalm 34 says, magnify the Lord with me, come exalt his name together, glorify the Lord with me, come exalt his name forever. That is awesome And it's not just for Carl singing in his study as he's practicing this and it's not just for me in the car while I'm going, wow, that's pretty good.
42:26 It's saying, join us. Join us, my friends. This is great. Magnify the Lord with me. Let us exalt his name together.
42:34 We are stronger together than we are apart. I sought the Lord. This is individual. I sought the Lord. I was looking for him.
42:40 I sought the Lord and he answered me. Praise God. I was looking for him and he answered me and he delivered me from all of my fears. Now, when he wrote this, he was still on the run from Saul. He was under the gun basically.
42:56 He was under threat from the king. He's under threat not just from somebody, some old somebody. He's under threat from the king and since he was a victorious warrior, he's under threat from all these other people. He was fleeing into the camp of the enemy to begin with and he says, truthfully, I sought the Lord and he answered me, deliver me from all my fears. Psalm nine ten says, and those who know your name, they will put their trust in you, for you, oh Lord, have not forsaken those who seek you.
43:28 We do go through hard times. There is no doubt about that. But we need to lean into God during those hard times. Jeremiah twenty nine eleven, we hear a lot that I know the plans I have for you, declares the Lord. There are plans for welfare and they're not for calamity to give you a hope and a future.
43:49 That's a great verse and it fits on a coffee mug and a bumper sticker. And it's really really good. Follow-up with what it says actually before you should read what it says before because he talks about some people that have been sent away from Jerusalem into Babylon in exile. They didn't want to be there. It was a miserable place for them.
44:09 They didn't like the food. They didn't like the people. They didn't like anything about it and they were exiled and God says to them, I am the one who exiled you here. I put you in this place and I have plans for your good through this difficult time. Put down roots.
44:26 You're going to be here for a while. If anybody prophesies, it'll be less than seventy years. They're lying to you. And then he says, I know the plans I have made for you. Their plans for welfare not for calamity to give you a hope and a future and then, like right now, you don't see it but then, you will call upon me and you will come and you will pray to me and I will listen to you and you will seek me and you will find me.
44:52 When you search for me with all of your heart, if you're holding something back, if you're holding it back in your reserve, you're not going to taste the complete goodness of God. Then, you will call upon me and you will come and you'll pray to me and I will listen to you. You'll seek me and you'll find me when you search for me with all your heart and I will be found by you declares the Lord and I will restore your fortunes and I will gather you from all the nations and from all the places where I have driven you declares the Lord and I will bring you back to the place from where I sent you into exile. He's delivered me from all my fears. Even though it looks really really bad right now He can and still delivers you.
45:37 Put his praise continually in your mouth. Meditate on his goodness The reason for songs is they're memorable too, right? This actually is an alphabet Psalm. So, every verse starts with the next letter of the Hebrew alphabet. It starts basically, it's the ABCs.
45:52 So, this is something to teach from the time a child is young. We're having VBS tomorrow. Bring em up and then nurture and admonition of the Lord and teach em the truth about God and then they'll have a deep well to draw from They look to him. So, the first one says, I sought the Lord and he answered me and delivered me from all my fears and then he recognized that there were other people around him and it says, they looked to him and they were radiant. They looked to him.
46:24 I saw other people that trusted in God and I could tell on their face that they were at peace. They looked to him and they were radiant and their faces will never be ashamed. This poor man cried and the Lord heard him and saved him out of all of his troubles. He said, I sought him and he answered me. He delivered me from my fears but now he says, this poor man and he's talking about this guy, this poor man, this poor man.
46:54 Cried and the Lord heard him and saved him out of all of his troubles. Now, he was still in trouble as far as we're looking at it, right? For several more chapters, he's still in trouble with Saul, the king who's after him But during the midst of the difficulty, he said, you, hey, you're with me this far? You're with me this far, God and I trust you. Saved him out of all of his troubles.
47:17 The angel of the Lord encamps around those who fear him. And rescues them. He will rescue you. If you think, well, that didn't work for my aunt so and so or that didn't work for so and so. They were a good Christian and they still died.
47:37 Ultimate rescue. Ultimate rescue is not on this side. David is looking beyond just his earthly existence right here. The angel of the Lord encamps around those who fear him and rescues them. Oh, taste and see that the Lord is good.
47:54 Taste and see. Check it out. For crying out loud. Check it out. Trust me.
48:00 David saying, taste and see the Lord is good. How blessed is the one who takes their refuge in him because they have nothing to be afraid of. He is no fool who gives up that which he cannot keep to gain that which he cannot lose, right? Oh fear the Lord. Reverence for God is important.
48:21 We've talked about towards the end of second Peter that people blaspheme and they talk against the Lord and they twist his words to say what they want him to say. Peter obviously was holding them very, very, very high. His his view of the authority of scripture was very high. He's saying, oh fear the Lord, you as saints, revere him, all of you who are holy, you're made holy by him. So, hold that with reverence because those who fear him, for those who fear him, there is no want.
48:51 You find your sufficiency in Christ. You know, Paul's saying that I've learned how to be content. There's no want when you're content. I've learned how to live in abundance and I've learned how to live in severe need but I'm content. I fear the Lord, you as saints, for to those who fear him, there is no want.
49:12 The young lions do lack and suffer hunger but they who seek the Lord shall not be in want of any good thing. If you're in the moment right now of pain, turn to these truths of scripture and see that this is true. If you're trying to get it for yourself like a young lion and you're going out and you're going after all the prey that you can get, you may suffer, won't. If you find your contentment and your sufficiency in God, you will not be in want of any good thing. So, come you children.
49:45 This is the latter half of the chapter here. Actually, this is right in the middle. It's an alphabetic psalm, so that says it's for kids to sing. It's for people to memorize. It's even got mnemonic devices so that you can get through it in order but it's right in the middle of it.
50:02 It's saying, come, children. I think it's children of God to come you children and listen to me and I will teach you the fear of the Lord, the reverence for God. He's doing that right now by by the way. He's teaching the fear of the Lord by being in the midst of troubles and saying, he's delivered me from my fear. I'm able to go forward in faith.
50:22 Who is the man who desires life and loves length of days that he may see good. I think there are a lot of us who spend a lot of time thinking, good grief could it be any more miserable on this planet? Are you with me? I think that there are a lot of us that just feel like, come Lord Jesus for crying out loud. It's so hard here.
50:43 It's just pain every day and just seems to get worse. David is flipping that and saying, do you want more days here so that you can see good? Look for the good. Who is the one who desires life? Loves length of days that he may see good.
51:00 Well, do this. Keep your tongue from evil. Keep your tongue from evil. Don't spread slander. Don't spread gossip.
51:12 Don't just talk about the bad things. Keep your tongue from evil and your lips from speaking deceit. Tell the truth. If you're telling the truth and you're talking about God, good things will come out of your mouth. Depart from evil and do good.
51:29 Seek peace and pursue it. Instead of holding a grudge, instead of holding on to things and unforgiveness, let it go. Let it go. Go after peace. Pursue it.
51:44 If we as Christians are supposed to be forgiven one another just as God in Christ forgave you, then, we need to be on the front side of it taking the first step towards any kind of impasse that we've hit with anybody, any type of disagreement where we feel like we're right and they feel like they're right and we're just at loggerheads against each other. Depart from evil and do good. Lean in. Grace is unmerited favor. Lean towards them because that's the way God is.
52:14 Seek peace and pursue it. Now, the eyes of the Lord are toward the righteous and his ears are open to their cry. Amen. The eyes of the Lord are toward the righteous and his ears are open to their cry. The face of the Lord is against evildoers to cut off the memory of them from the earths.
52:37 In Peter, second Peter, we had so much about judgment and it was fallen into either the camp of the kingdom of darkness or the kingdom of light and it was by Jesus that we could be removed from one to the other, either lost or found, lost or saved. The eyes of the Lord are toward the righteous. How are you made righteous? Through Christ alone. There's not another way.
53:05 His ears are open to their cry. The face of the Lord is against evildoers but repentance is possible and he has according to second Peter three nine. He's not slow and he's not slack. He's doesn't want any to perish but he wants all to come to repentance. So, that's always a possibility.
53:27 The righteous cry out and the Lord hears and he delivers them out of his troubles. David is speaking from first hand experience. He's already said that he did this. I think he kinda couldn't believe it worked. Are you with me?
53:40 He's like, I coulda I coulda been killed, but it came upon me to Just do that. The king's like, get this guy out of here. We got enough crazy going on in Gath. The righteous cry out and the Lord hears and he delivers them out of their troubles. The Lord is near to the brokenhearted.
54:03 Amen. Blessed are those who are poor in spirit. Blessed are those who mourn. The Lord is near to the brokenhearted, and he saves those who are crushed in spirit. Many are the afflictions of the righteous.
54:21 I think this is messianic in a way, and we'll follow that up with the next verse, but it's many are the afflictions of the righteous. If we capitalize that r right there instead of the righteous one of Jesus Christ, we could all agree. Yeah, many are the afflictions. He had constant conflict with the Pharisees. He had constant conflict with the world around him.
54:42 There are people that are always putting him to the test which he stood up to every time. To the test Many are the afflictions of the righteous. Would you agree that Christ suffered as he walked this earth? Yes. To the extent that you suffer for Christ, this applies to you.
55:09 Many are the afflictions of the righteous but the Lord delivers him out of them all. Whether it be this side or the other. There are martyrs and martyr actually by the way means testimony or witness. If there's something that you're willing to put down your life for, that's what you believe. Many other afflictions of the righteous but the Lord delivers him out of them all.
55:32 This is definitely messianic pointing towards Jesus. He keeps all his bones. Not one of them is broken on the cross when they came around. They broke bones to speed the process of crucifixion when they got tired of watching the agony and when they came to Christ, he had given up his spirit already. They need not break any of his bones.
55:54 Psalm thirty four twenty one says this, evil shall slay the wicked and it looks like evil prospers on this Earth. Actually, you go through more Psalms, you keep going forward in Psalms and you see David said, how long lord? How long? How long must I wrestle with my thoughts and every day have sorrow in my heart? How long will my enemy triumph over me?
56:16 How long will the evil go unpunished? The evil though, he says, in the end shall slay the wicked and those who hate the righteous will be condemned. Those who hate Christ will be condemned. Those who hate you for your love of Christ will be condemned, found guilty is the word right there. But the Lord redeems, pays for the soul of his servants and none of those who take refuge in him will be found guilty, wanting will be condemned.
56:51 Are you with? We talked about judgment in the New Testament from second Peter and we're going forward in the Hebrews and a lot of Hebrews is going to talk about, it's going be Old Testament references every Sunday all the way through. It's good stuff. Really, really good stuff. 18 different quotings of the Psalms.
57:09 That's one of the reason I was going back and reading the Psalms, thinking about it. Lots of quotes from Isaiah. Lots of different quotes from all over the Old Testament. They all point to this. The Lord redeems the soul of his servants and none of those who take their refuge in him will be found wanting, will be found guilty, or will be condemned.
57:29 The Lord redeems the soul of his servant. I think that's the last line. Would you join me? We're going to stand and sing another praise to God. If y'all would all stand and and we'll sing forever.
57:41 Forever God is faithful and I think that in times where you feel like, not right now. He's not faithful right now. I'm going through it and it's horrible right now. Put this song in your heart. Put this praise on your lips that forever God is faithful.
59:59 God is faithful God is strong God is with us forever
1:00:57 God, I pray for the weary and the hurting right now, for those who are having a hard time trusting in you. I pray that you draw em really, really close, lord. I pray that you'd give em something and lord, I think you have. This morning, I think you have in Psalm 34, something to hold on to. I will praise the Lord at all times.
1:01:13 I'll lean into him. So, may the blessing be this. Be anxious for nothing but in everything by prayer and by supplication with thanksgiving. Let your request be made known to God and the peace of God which surpasses all understanding will guard your hearts and your minds through Christ Jesus.
1:01:32 Amen.
1:01:33 In Jesus name, I pray that this will be true for you this week. Amen.
