In one paragraph
Pastor Brian opened with the news of Linda Larue's baptism that morning, a woman who had come from Texas with cancer, prayed earnestly to make it to Jackson, and came to faith after ten days in the hospital. That story, he said, ran directly alongside the Scripture he was about to preach. The message worked through two interwoven miracles from Matthew, Mark, and Luke: the healing of a woman with a...
Read together
- Matthew 9:18-26 Matthew's shorter account of Jairus's daughter and the bleeding woman
- Luke 8:40-56 Luke's expanded account of the same two miracles
- Mark 5:21-43 Mark's detailed account, treated as Peter's memoirs, where the sermon spends most of its time
- Colossians 2 mentioned as what Carl is preaching through on Monday nights, dropping back to chapter two that week
- Colossians 3 Carl had preached from this chapter the previous week at the main service
- 1 Corinthians 13:9 quoted as 'we see in part, we prophesy in part' to acknowledge imperfect theology
- Colossians 3:12-17 read near the close as application, covering compassion, forgiveness, love, peace of Christ, psalms and hymns, and doing all in the name of the Lord Jesus
- Numbers 6:24-26 paraphrased in the benediction as 'may the Lord bless and keep you and make his face to shine upon you and give you peace'
Talk about it
- The pastor described the woman with the hemorrhage as having imperfect theology, almost superstitious, yet Jesus responded to her faith anyway. What does that tell us about what God is actually looking for when we reach out to Him?
- When the messengers arrived to tell Jairus his daughter had died, Jesus told him simply, 'Don't be afraid, just believe.' Have you ever been in a situation where fear and faith were pulling you in opposite directions? How did you respond?
- The pastor pointed out the contrast between Jairus and the sick woman, who both approached Jesus with humility, and the professional mourners, who laughed at Him and likely missed out on a blessing because of their pride. Where do you see that same contrast between pride and humility playing out in everyday life?
- Jesus told the woman, 'Your faith has saved you,' using a word that also means rescue, restoration, and deliverance. How does understanding salvation in those broader terms, not just forgiveness but wholeness and safety, change the way you think about what Jesus has done for you?
- The pastor read from Colossians about bearing with one another, forgiving one another, and putting on love, and he connected it to Jairus having to wait patiently while Jesus stopped for someone else on the way to his dying daughter. Where in your own life right now is God asking you to be patient while He tends to something or someone else?
