James 4
humble yourselves before God, resist the devil and he will flee from you
1 Where do wars and fightings among you come from? Don’t they come from your pleasures that war in your members?
2 You lust, and don’t have. You murder and covet, and can’t obtain. You fight and make war. You don’t have, because you don’t ask.
3 You ask, and don’t receive, because you ask with wrong motives, so that you may spend it on your pleasures.
4 You adulterers and adulteresses, don’t you know that friendship with the world is hostility toward God? Whoever therefore wants to be a friend of the world makes himself an enemy of God.
5 Or do you think that the Scripture says in vain, “The Spirit who lives in us yearns jealously”?
6 But he gives more grace. Therefore it says, “God resists the proud, but gives grace to the humble.”
7 Be subject therefore to God. Resist the devil, and he will flee from you.
8 Draw near to God, and he will draw near to you. Cleanse your hands, you sinners; and purify your hearts, you double-minded.
9 Lament, mourn, and weep. Let your laughter be turned to mourning, and your joy to gloom.
10 Humble yourselves in the sight of the Lord, and he will exalt you.
11 Don’t speak against one another, brothers. He who speaks against a brother and judges his brother, speaks against the law and judges the law. But if you judge the law, you are not a doer of the law, but a judge.
12 Only one is the lawgiver, who is able to save and to destroy. But who are you to judge another?
13 Come now, you who say, “Today or tomorrow let’s go into this city, and spend a year there, trade, and make a profit.”
14 Whereas you don’t know what your life will be like tomorrow. For what is your life? For you are a vapor, that appears for a little time, and then vanishes away.
15 For you ought to say, “If the Lord wills, we will both live, and do this or that.”
16 But now you glory in your boasting. All such boasting is evil.
17 To him therefore who knows to do good, and doesn’t do it, to him it is sin.

1 Corinthians 10:13
no trial or test will be allowed that he knows we cannot bear
13 No temptation has taken you except what is common to man. God is faithful, who will not allow you to be tempted above what you are able, but will with the temptation also make the way of escape, that you may be able to endure it.

Matthew 4
the account of the enemy tempting Jesus, referenced in the closing prayer
1 Then Jesus was led up by the Spirit into the wilderness to be tempted by the devil.
2 When he had fasted forty days and forty nights, he was hungry afterward.
3 The tempter came and said to him, “If you are the Son of God, command that these stones become bread.”
4 But he answered, “It is written, ‘Man shall not live by bread alone, but by every word that proceeds out of the mouth of God.’”
5 Then the devil took him into the holy city. He set him on the pinnacle of the temple,
6 and said to him, “If you are the Son of God, throw yourself down, for it is written, ‘He will put his angels in charge of you.’ and, ‘On their hands they will bear you up, so that you don’t dash your foot against a stone.’”
7 Jesus said to him, “Again, it is written, ‘You shall not test the Lord, your God.’”
8 Again, the devil took him to an exceedingly high mountain, and showed him all the kingdoms of the world, and their glory.
9 He said to him, “I will give you all of these things, if you will fall down and worship me.”
10 Then Jesus said to him, “Get behind me, Satan! For it is written, ‘You shall worship the Lord your God, and you shall serve him only.’”
11 Then the devil left him, and behold, angels came and served him.
12 Now when Jesus heard that John was delivered up, he withdrew into Galilee.
13 Leaving Nazareth, he came and lived in Capernaum, which is by the sea, in the region of Zebulun and Naphtali,
14 that it might be fulfilled which was spoken through Isaiah the prophet, saying,
15 “The land of Zebulun and the land of Naphtali, toward the sea, beyond the Jordan, Galilee of the Gentiles,
16 the people who sat in darkness saw a great light, to those who sat in the region and shadow of death, to them light has dawned.”
17 From that time, Jesus began to preach, and to say, “Repent! For the Kingdom of Heaven is at hand.”
18 Walking by the sea of Galilee, he saw two brothers: Simon, who is called Peter, and Andrew, his brother, casting a net into the sea; for they were fishermen.
19 He said to them, “Come after me, and I will make you fishers for men.”
20 They immediately left their nets and followed him.
21 Going on from there, he saw two other brothers, James the son of Zebedee, and John his brother, in the boat with Zebedee their father, mending their nets. He called them.
22 They immediately left the boat and their father, and followed him.
23 Jesus went about in all Galilee, teaching in their synagogues, preaching the Good News of the Kingdom, and healing every disease and every sickness among the people.
24 The report about him went out into all Syria. They brought to him all who were sick, afflicted with various diseases and torments, possessed with demons, epileptics, and paralytics; and he healed them.
25 Great multitudes from Galilee, Decapolis, Jerusalem, Judea and from beyond the Jordan followed him.

Recap
The message in order, in a few minutes of reading.
This message worked through the final temptation of Jesus in Matthew 4, looking at what it means to live visibly different from the world and to serve God only. The preacher drew on a story from Eric Sandras's book Buck Naked Faith alongside several passages of scripture to show how the enemy exploits our desire to blend in, and how God uses trials to shape and prove us. The sermon closed with the assurance that nothing comes to us without God's knowledge and care.
What was said
The sermon opened with a pattern many Christians recognize: the pressure of always being "on," always being the spiritual one, and the quiet pull toward just being like everyone else for a night. Eric Sandras told that story on himself in Buck Naked Faith, describing how he led a campus ministry of 250 students while secretly living a double life. The moment that broke him was not getting caught by a friend or a pastor. It was five words from a stranger: "I thought you were different." He knew she was right, and he knew he had used the megaphone of his life for the wrong side that night.
That image of a megaphone ran through the rest of the message. Whether we think of ourselves as influential or not, our lives speak. The question the sermon put to the room was simple: are we different, or are we just part of the world? Being in the world but not of it is not optional. God places us here to shine.
The third temptation, where Satan offered Jesus all the kingdoms of the world in exchange for worship, pressed that question further. The preacher noted that those kingdoms are already promised to Jesus, so the offer was empty to begin with. But the deeper point was what Satan was really asking for: just a little, just a piece, just some compromise. Jesus gave him none of it. He said get out, and the enemy left.
That moment in Matthew 4 connected to James 4: humble yourself before God, resist the devil, and he will flee. The preacher was direct that Christians sometimes give Satan far more credit than scripture does. Colossians 1:13 says God has already rescued us from the kingdom of darkness and transferred us to the kingdom of His Son. The enemy can whisper, and he will find our weak spots, but he has no authority over those who belong to Jesus.
From there the sermon turned to why God allows testing at all. In both Testaments, the word "test" means to prove by trial. What God is proving, the preacher said, is that He can be trusted. There is no suffering greater than His faithfulness. Psalm 46:1 was quoted: "God is our refuge and strength, always ready to help in times of trouble."
The preacher was honest that Christians are not immune from trouble and tears. Jesus said as much. But whatever reaches us is, as she put it, "father filtered," and Romans 8:28 promises He is working it together for good. The purpose behind that, Romans 8:29, is that we be conformed more and more into the image of Jesus.
James 1:12 added a further word: God blesses those who endure testing, and afterward they receive the crown of life. First Corinthians 10:13 closed the thought, with the assurance that nothing will be allowed to reach us that God does not already know we can bear through Him. Even the anxiety of reading a frightening news article the day before, the preacher said, gets answered by John 14:27: "Let not your heart be troubled and do not be afraid."
Doing a Bible study?
Here is a guide we have prepared for you: the passages in order, questions for the group, and room to write.
- Eric Sandras said he was drawn to 'the freedom of not being known for being different.' Have you ever felt that pull? What was going on in your life at the time?
- The preacher said our life is a megaphone whether we think so or not. Who in your life is actually watching how you live, and how does that reality sit with you?
