Jesus Is Better Than All of These Things

December 28, 2025 · Hebrews

Series · Hebrews · Week 69 of 69
Scripture referenced 15 passages

The passage this message was preached from, in full, with every other passage it reached for.

  • Hebrews 13:1-16 primary passage preached through for practical Christian living

    1 Let brotherly love continue.

2 Don’t forget to show hospitality to strangers, for in doing so, some have entertained angels without knowing it.

3 Remember those who are in bonds, as bound with them; and those who are ill-treated, since you are also in the body.

4 Let marriage be held in honor among all, and let the bed be undefiled: but God will judge the sexually immoral and adulterers.

5 Be free from the love of money, content with such things as you have, for he has said, “I will in no way leave you, neither will I in any way forsake you.”

6 So that with good courage we say, “The Lord is my helper. I will not fear. What can man do to me?”

7 Remember your leaders, men who spoke to you the word of God, and considering the results of their conduct, imitate their faith.

8 Jesus Christ is the same yesterday, today, and forever.

9 Don’t be carried away by various and strange teachings, for it is good that the heart be established by grace, not by food, through which those who were so occupied were not benefited.

10 We have an altar from which those who serve the holy tabernacle have no right to eat.

11 For the bodies of those animals, whose blood is brought into the holy place by the high priest as an offering for sin, are burned outside of the camp.

12 Therefore Jesus also, that he might sanctify the people through his own blood, suffered outside of the gate.

13 Let us therefore go out to him outside of the camp, bearing his reproach.

14 For we don’t have here an enduring city, but we seek that which is to come.

15 Through him, then, let us offer up a sacrifice of praise to God continually, that is, the fruit of lips which proclaim allegiance to his name.

16 But don’t forget to be doing good and sharing, for with such sacrifices God is well pleased.

Matthew 24

warning from Jesus that many will come claiming to be the Christ and will deceive many

1 Jesus went out from the temple, and was going on his way. His disciples came to him to show him the buildings of the temple.

2 But he answered them, “You see all of these things, don’t you? Most certainly I tell you, there will not be left here one stone on another, that will not be thrown down.”

3 As he sat on the Mount of Olives, the disciples came to him privately, saying, “Tell us, when will these things be? What is the sign of your coming, and of the end of the age?”

4 Jesus answered them, “Be careful that no one leads you astray.

5 For many will come in my name, saying, ‘I am the Christ,’ and will lead many astray.

6 You will hear of wars and rumors of wars. See that you aren’t troubled, for all this must happen, but the end is not yet.

7 For nation will rise against nation, and kingdom against kingdom; and there will be famines, plagues, and earthquakes in various places.

8 But all these things are the beginning of birth pains.

9 Then they will deliver you up to oppression, and will kill you. You will be hated by all of the nations for my name’s sake.

10 Then many will stumble, and will deliver up one another, and will hate one another.

11 Many false prophets will arise, and will lead many astray.

12 Because iniquity will be multiplied, the love of many will grow cold.

13 But he who endures to the end, the same will be saved.

14 This Good News of the Kingdom will be preached in the whole world for a testimony to all the nations, and then the end will come.

15 “When, therefore, you see the abomination of desolation, which was spoken of through Daniel the prophet, standing in the holy place (let the reader understand),

16 then let those who are in Judea flee to the mountains.

17 Let him who is on the housetop not go down to take out the things that are in his house.

18 Let him who is in the field not return back to get his clothes.

19 But woe to those who are with child and to nursing mothers in those days!

20 Pray that your flight will not be in the winter, nor on a Sabbath,

21 for then there will be great oppression, such as has not been from the beginning of the world until now, no, nor ever will be.

22 Unless those days had been shortened, no flesh would have been saved. But for the sake of the chosen ones, those days will be shortened.

23 “Then if any man tells you, ‘Behold, here is the Christ,’ or, ‘There,’ don’t believe it.

24 For there will arise false christs, and false prophets, and they will show great signs and wonders, so as to lead astray, if possible, even the chosen ones.

25 “Behold, I have told you beforehand.

26 If therefore they tell you, ‘Behold, he is in the wilderness,’ don’t go out; ‘Behold, he is in the inner rooms,’ don’t believe it.

27 For as the lightning flashes from the east, and is seen even to the west, so will be the coming of the Son of Man.

28 For wherever the carcass is, that is where the vultures gather together.

29 But immediately after the oppression of those days, the sun will be darkened, the moon will not give its light, the stars will fall from the sky, and the powers of the heavens will be shaken;

30 and then the sign of the Son of Man will appear in the sky. Then all the tribes of the earth will mourn, and they will see the Son of Man coming on the clouds of the sky with power and great glory.

31 He will send out his angels with a great sound of a trumpet, and they will gather together his chosen ones from the four winds, from one end of the sky to the other.

32 “Now from the fig tree learn this parable. When its branch has now become tender, and produces its leaves, you know that the summer is near.

33 Even so you also, when you see all these things, know that it is near, even at the doors.

34 Most certainly I tell you, this generation will not pass away, until all these things are accomplished.

35 Heaven and earth will pass away, but my words will not pass away.

36 But no one knows of that day and hour, not even the angels of heaven, but my Father only.

37 “As the days of Noah were, so will be the coming of the Son of Man.

38 For as in those days which were before the flood they were eating and drinking, marrying and giving in marriage, until the day that Noah entered into the ship,

39 and they didn’t know until the flood came, and took them all away, so will be the coming of the Son of Man.

40 Then two men will be in the field: one will be taken and one will be left.

41 Two women will be grinding at the mill: one will be taken and one will be left.

42 Watch therefore, for you don’t know in what hour your Lord comes.

43 But know this, that if the master of the house had known in what watch of the night the thief was coming, he would have watched, and would not have allowed his house to be broken into.

44 Therefore also be ready, for in an hour that you don’t expect, the Son of Man will come.

45 “Who then is the faithful and wise servant, whom his lord has set over his household, to give them their food in due season?

46 Blessed is that servant whom his lord finds doing so when he comes.

47 Most certainly I tell you that he will set him over all that he has.

48 But if that evil servant should say in his heart, ‘My lord is delaying his coming,’

49 and begins to beat his fellow servants, and eat and drink with the drunkards,

50 the lord of that servant will come in a day when he doesn’t expect it, and in an hour when he doesn’t know it,

51 and will cut him in pieces, and appoint his portion with the hypocrites. That is where the weeping and grinding of teeth will be.

Acts 20

Paul's warning that after his departure savage wolves will come in and distort the truth

1 After the uproar had ceased, Paul sent for the disciples, took leave of them, and departed to go into Macedonia.

2 When he had gone through those parts, and had encouraged them with many words, he came into Greece.

3 When he had spent three months there, and a plot was made against him by Jews as he was about to set sail for Syria, he determined to return through Macedonia.

4 These accompanied him as far as Asia: Sopater of Beroea; Aristarchus and Secundus of the Thessalonians; Gaius of Derbe; Timothy; and Tychicus and Trophimus of Asia.

5 But these had gone ahead, and were waiting for us at Troas.

6 We sailed away from Philippi after the days of Unleavened Bread, and came to them at Troas in five days, where we stayed seven days.

7 On the first day of the week, when the disciples were gathered together to break bread, Paul talked with them, intending to depart on the next day, and continued his speech until midnight.

8 There were many lights in the upper room where we were gathered together.

9 A certain young man named Eutychus sat in the window, weighed down with deep sleep. As Paul spoke still longer, being weighed down by his sleep, he fell down from the third floor, and was taken up dead.

10 Paul went down, and fell upon him, and embracing him said, “Don’t be troubled, for his life is in him.”

11 When he had gone up, and had broken bread, and eaten, and had talked with them a long while, even until break of day, he departed.

12 They brought the boy in alive, and were greatly comforted.

13 But we, going ahead to the ship, set sail for Assos, intending to take Paul aboard there; for he had so arranged, intending himself to go by land.

14 When he met us at Assos, we took him aboard, and came to Mitylene.

15 Sailing from there, we came the following day opposite Chios. The next day we touched at Samos and stayed at Trogyllium, and the day after we came to Miletus.

16 For Paul had determined to sail past Ephesus, that he might not have to spend time in Asia; for he was hastening, if it were possible for him, to be in Jerusalem on the day of Pentecost.

17 From Miletus he sent to Ephesus, and called to himself the elders of the assembly.

18 When they had come to him, he said to them, “You yourselves know, from the first day that I set foot in Asia, how I was with you all the time,

19 serving the Lord with all humility, with many tears, and with trials which happened to me by the plots of the Jews;

20 how I didn’t shrink from declaring to you anything that was profitable, teaching you publicly and from house to house,

21 testifying both to Jews and to Greeks repentance toward God, and faith toward our Lord Jesus.

22 Now, behold, I go bound by the Spirit to Jerusalem, not knowing what will happen to me there;

23 except that the Holy Spirit testifies in every city, saying that bonds and afflictions wait for me.

24 But these things don’t count; nor do I hold my life dear to myself, so that I may finish my race with joy, and the ministry which I received from the Lord Jesus, to fully testify to the Good News of the grace of God.

25 “Now, behold, I know that you all, among whom I went about preaching God’s Kingdom, will see my face no more.

26 Therefore I testify to you today that I am clean from the blood of all men,

27 for I didn’t shrink from declaring to you the whole counsel of God.

28 Take heed, therefore, to yourselves, and to all the flock, in which the Holy Spirit has made you overseers, to shepherd the assembly of the Lord and God which he purchased with his own blood.

29 For I know that after my departure, vicious wolves will enter in among you, not sparing the flock.

30 Men will arise from among your own selves, speaking perverse things, to draw away the disciples after them.

31 Therefore watch, remembering that for a period of three years I didn’t cease to admonish everyone night and day with tears.

32 Now, brothers, I entrust you to God, and to the word of his grace, which is able to build up, and to give you the inheritance among all those who are sanctified.

33 I coveted no one’s silver, or gold, or clothing.

34 You yourselves know that these hands served my necessities, and those who were with me.

35 In all things I gave you an example, that so laboring you ought to help the weak, and to remember the words of the Lord Jesus, that he himself said, ‘It is more blessed to give than to receive.’”

36 When he had spoken these things, he knelt down and prayed with them all.

37 They all wept a lot, and fell on Paul’s neck and kissed him,

38 sorrowing most of all because of the word which he had spoken, that they should see his face no more. And they accompanied him to the ship.

Romans 16

urging believers to keep watch on those who cause dissensions contrary to sound teaching

1 I commend to you Phoebe, our sister, who is a servant of the assembly that is at Cenchreae,

2 that you receive her in the Lord, in a way worthy of the saints, and that you assist her in whatever matter she may need from you, for she herself also has been a helper of many, and of my own self.

3 Greet Prisca and Aquila, my fellow workers in Christ Jesus,

4 who for my life, laid down their own necks; to whom not only I give thanks, but also all the assemblies of the Gentiles.

5 Greet the assembly that is in their house. Greet Epaenetus, my beloved, who is the first fruits of Achaia to Christ.

6 Greet Mary, who labored much for us.

7 Greet Andronicus and Junia, my relatives and my fellow prisoners, who are notable among the apostles, who were also in Christ before me.

8 Greet Amplias, my beloved in the Lord.

9 Greet Urbanus, our fellow worker in Christ, and Stachys, my beloved.

10 Greet Apelles, the approved in Christ. Greet those who are of the household of Aristobulus.

11 Greet Herodion, my kinsman. Greet them of the household of Narcissus, who are in the Lord.

12 Greet Tryphaena and Tryphosa, who labor in the Lord. Greet Persis, the beloved, who labored much in the Lord.

13 Greet Rufus, the chosen in the Lord, and his mother and mine.

14 Greet Asyncritus, Phlegon, Hermes, Patrobas, Hermas, and the brothers who are with them.

15 Greet Philologus and Julia, Nereus and his sister, and Olympas, and all the saints who are with them.

16 Greet one another with a holy kiss. The assemblies of Christ greet you.

17 Now I beg you, brothers, look out for those who are causing the divisions and occasions of stumbling, contrary to the doctrine which you learned, and turn away from them.

18 For those who are such don’t serve our Lord, Jesus Christ, but their own belly; and by their smooth and flattering speech, they deceive the hearts of the innocent.

19 For your obedience has become known to all. I rejoice therefore over you. But I desire to have you wise in that which is good, but innocent in that which is evil.

20 And the God of peace will quickly crush Satan under your feet. The grace of our Lord Jesus Christ be with you.

21 Timothy, my fellow worker, greets you, as do Lucius, Jason, and Sosipater, my relatives.

22 I, Tertius, who write the letter, greet you in the Lord.

23 Gaius, my host and host of the whole assembly, greets you. Erastus, the treasurer of the city, greets you, as does Quartus, the brother.

24 The grace of our Lord Jesus Christ be with you all! Amen.

2 Corinthians 11

warning about false apostles who disguise themselves as servants of righteousness, with Satan disguising himself as an angel of light

1 I wish that you would bear with me in a little foolishness, but indeed you do bear with me.

2 For I am jealous over you with a godly jealousy. For I married you to one husband, that I might present you as a pure virgin to Christ.

3 But I am afraid that somehow, as the serpent deceived Eve in his craftiness, so your minds might be corrupted from the simplicity that is in Christ.

4 For if he who comes preaches another Jesus, whom we did not preach, or if you receive a different spirit, which you did not receive, or a different “good news”, which you did not accept, you put up with that well enough.

5 For I reckon that I am not at all behind the very best apostles.

6 But though I am unskilled in speech, yet I am not unskilled in knowledge. No, in every way we have been revealed to you in all things.

7 Or did I commit a sin in humbling myself that you might be exalted, because I preached to you God’s Good News free of charge?

8 I robbed other assemblies, taking wages from them that I might serve you.

9 When I was present with you and was in need, I wasn’t a burden on anyone, for the brothers, when they came from Macedonia, supplied the measure of my need. In everything I kept myself from being burdensome to you, and I will continue to do so.

10 As the truth of Christ is in me, no one will stop me from this boasting in the regions of Achaia.

11 Why? Because I don’t love you? God knows.

12 But what I do, that I will do, that I may cut off occasion from them that desire an occasion, that in which they boast, they may be found even as we.

13 For such men are false apostles, deceitful workers, masquerading as Christ’s apostles.

14 And no wonder, for even Satan masquerades as an angel of light.

15 It is no great thing therefore if his servants also masquerade as servants of righteousness, whose end will be according to their works.

16 I say again, let no one think me foolish. But if so, yet receive me as foolish, that I also may boast a little.

17 That which I speak, I don’t speak according to the Lord, but as in foolishness, in this confidence of boasting.

18 Seeing that many boast after the flesh, I will also boast.

19 For you bear with the foolish gladly, being wise.

20 For you bear with a man, if he brings you into bondage, if he devours you, if he takes you captive, if he exalts himself, if he strikes you on the face.

21 I speak by way of disparagement, as though we had been weak. Yet in whatever way anyone is bold (I speak in foolishness), I am bold also.

22 Are they Hebrews? So am I. Are they Israelites? So am I. Are they the offspring of Abraham? So am I.

23 Are they servants of Christ? (I speak as one beside himself) I am more so; in labors more abundantly, in prisons more abundantly, in stripes above measure, in deaths often.

24 Five times from the Jews I received forty stripes minus one.

25 Three times I was beaten with rods. Once I was stoned. Three times I suffered shipwreck. I have been a night and a day in the deep.

26 I have been in travels often, perils of rivers, perils of robbers, perils from my countrymen, perils from the Gentiles, perils in the city, perils in the wilderness, perils in the sea, perils among false brothers;

27 in labor and travail, in watchings often, in hunger and thirst, in fastings often, and in cold and nakedness.

28 Besides those things that are outside, there is that which presses on me daily: anxiety for all the assemblies.

29 Who is weak, and I am not weak? Who is caused to stumble, and I don’t burn with indignation?

30 If I must boast, I will boast of the things that concern my weakness.

31 The God and Father of the Lord Jesus Christ, he who is blessed forever more, knows that I don’t lie.

32 In Damascus the governor under King Aretas guarded the Damascenes’ city, desiring to arrest me.

33 Through a window I was let down in a basket by the wall, and escaped his hands.

Galatians 1

Paul's rebuke of those deserting the gospel of grace for a distorted gospel, pronouncing anathema on any who preach otherwise

1 Paul, an apostle (not from men, nor through man, but through Jesus Christ, and God the Father, who raised him from the dead),

2 and all the brothers who are with me, to the assemblies of Galatia:

3 Grace to you and peace from God the Father, and our Lord Jesus Christ,

4 who gave himself for our sins, that he might deliver us out of this present evil age, according to the will of our God and Father—

5 to whom be the glory forever and ever. Amen.

6 I marvel that you are so quickly deserting him who called you in the grace of Christ to a different “good news”;

7 and there isn’t another “good news.” Only there are some who trouble you, and want to pervert the Good News of Christ.

8 But even though we, or an angel from heaven, should preach to you any “good news” other than that which we preached to you, let him be cursed.

9 As we have said before, so I now say again: if any man preaches to you any “good news” other than that which you received, let him be cursed.

10 For am I now seeking the favor of men, or of God? Or am I striving to please men? For if I were still pleasing men, I wouldn’t be a servant of Christ.

11 But I make known to you, brothers, concerning the Good News which was preached by me, that it is not according to man.

12 For neither did I receive it from man, nor was I taught it, but it came to me through revelation of Jesus Christ.

13 For you have heard of my way of living in time past in the Jews’ religion, how that beyond measure I persecuted the assembly of God, and ravaged it.

14 I advanced in the Jews’ religion beyond many of my own age among my countrymen, being more exceedingly zealous for the traditions of my fathers.

15 But when it was the good pleasure of God, who separated me from my mother’s womb, and called me through his grace,

16 to reveal his Son in me, that I might preach him among the Gentiles, I didn’t immediately confer with flesh and blood,

17 nor did I go up to Jerusalem to those who were apostles before me, but I went away into Arabia. Then I returned to Damascus.

18 Then after three years I went up to Jerusalem to visit Peter, and stayed with him fifteen days.

19 But of the other apostles I saw no one, except James, the Lord’s brother.

20 Now about the things which I write to you, behold, before God, I’m not lying.

21 Then I came to the regions of Syria and Cilicia.

22 I was still unknown by face to the assemblies of Judea which were in Christ,

23 but they only heard: “He who once persecuted us now preaches the faith that he once tried to destroy.”

24 And they glorified God in me.

2 Thessalonians 2

urging believers not to be shaken in composure or deceived about the day of the Lord

1 Now, brothers, concerning the coming of our Lord Jesus Christ, and our gathering together to him, we ask you

2 not to be quickly shaken in your mind, and not be troubled, either by spirit, or by word, or by letter as if from us, saying that the day of Christ has already come.

3 Let no one deceive you in any way. For it will not be, unless the rebellion comes first, and the man of sin is revealed, the son of destruction,

4 he who opposes and exalts himself against all that is called God or that is worshiped; so that he sits as God in the temple of God, setting himself up as God.

5 Don’t you remember that, when I was still with you, I told you these things?

6 Now you know what is restraining him, to the end that he may be revealed in his own season.

7 For the mystery of lawlessness already works. Only there is one who restrains now, until he is taken out of the way.

8 Then the lawless one will be revealed, whom the Lord will kill with the breath of his mouth, and destroy by the manifestation of his coming;

9 even he whose coming is according to the working of Satan with all power and signs and lying wonders,

10 and with all deception of wickedness for those who are being lost, because they didn’t receive the love of the truth, that they might be saved.

11 Because of this, God sends them a working of error, that they should believe a lie;

12 that they all might be judged who didn’t believe the truth, but had pleasure in unrighteousness.

13 But we are bound to always give thanks to God for you, brothers loved by the Lord, because God chose you from the beginning for salvation through sanctification of the Spirit and belief in the truth;

14 to which he called you through our Good News, for the obtaining of the glory of our Lord Jesus Christ.

15 So then, brothers, stand firm, and hold the traditions which you were taught by us, whether by word, or by letter.

16 Now our Lord Jesus Christ himself, and God our Father, who loved us and gave us eternal comfort and good hope through grace,

17 comfort your hearts and establish you in every good work and word.

1 Timothy 4

warning that in later times some will fall away, paying attention to deceitful spirits and doctrines of demons

1 But the Spirit says expressly that in later times some will fall away from the faith, paying attention to seducing spirits and doctrines of demons,

2 through the hypocrisy of men who speak lies, branded in their own conscience as with a hot iron;

3 forbidding marriage and commanding to abstain from foods which God created to be received with thanksgiving by those who believe and know the truth.

4 For every creature of God is good, and nothing is to be rejected, if it is received with thanksgiving.

5 For it is sanctified through the word of God and prayer.

6 If you instruct the brothers of these things, you will be a good servant of Christ Jesus, nourished in the words of the faith, and of the good doctrine which you have followed.

7 But refuse profane and old wives’ fables. Exercise yourself toward godliness.

8 For bodily exercise has some value, but godliness has value in all things, having the promise of the life which is now, and of that which is to come.

9 This saying is faithful and worthy of all acceptance.

10 For to this end we both labor and suffer reproach, because we have set our trust in the living God, who is the Savior of all men, especially of those who believe.

11 Command and teach these things.

12 Let no man despise your youth; but be an example to those who believe, in word, in your way of life, in love, in spirit, in faith, and in purity.

13 Until I come, pay attention to reading, to exhortation, and to teaching.

14 Don’t neglect the gift that is in you, which was given to you by prophecy, with the laying on of the hands of the elders.

15 Be diligent in these things. Give yourself wholly to them, that your progress may be revealed to all.

16 Pay attention to yourself, and to your teaching. Continue in these things, for in doing this you will save both yourself and those who hear you.

1 Timothy 6

warning against those who advocate different doctrine and have morbid interest in controversial questions

1 Let as many as are bondservants under the yoke count their own masters worthy of all honor, that the name of God and the doctrine not be blasphemed.

2 Those who have believing masters, let them not despise them, because they are brothers, but rather let them serve them, because those who partake of the benefit are believing and beloved. Teach and exhort these things.

3 If anyone teaches a different doctrine, and doesn’t consent to sound words, the words of our Lord Jesus Christ, and to the doctrine which is according to godliness,

4 he is conceited, knowing nothing, but obsessed with arguments, disputes, and word battles, from which come envy, strife, insulting, evil suspicions,

5 constant friction of people of corrupt minds and destitute of the truth, who suppose that godliness is a means of gain. Withdraw yourself from such.

6 But godliness with contentment is great gain.

7 For we brought nothing into the world, and we certainly can’t carry anything out.

8 But having food and clothing, we will be content with that.

9 But those who are determined to be rich fall into a temptation and a snare and many foolish and harmful lusts, such as drown men in ruin and destruction.

10 For the love of money is a root of all kinds of evil. Some have been led astray from the faith in their greed, and have pierced themselves through with many sorrows.

11 But you, man of God, flee these things, and follow after righteousness, godliness, faith, love, perseverance, and gentleness.

12 Fight the good fight of faith. Take hold of the eternal life to which you were called, and you confessed the good confession in the sight of many witnesses.

13 I command you before God, who gives life to all things, and before Christ Jesus, who before Pontius Pilate testified the good confession,

14 that you keep the commandment without spot, blameless, until the appearing of our Lord Jesus Christ;

15 which in its own times he will show, who is the blessed and only Ruler, the King of kings, and Lord of lords;

16 who alone has immortality, dwelling in unapproachable light; whom no man has seen, nor can see: to whom be honor and eternal power. Amen.

17 Charge those who are rich in this present world that they not be haughty, nor have their hope set on the uncertainty of riches, but on the living God, who richly provides us with everything to enjoy;

18 that they do good, that they be rich in good works, that they be ready to distribute, willing to share;

19 laying up in store for themselves a good foundation against the time to come, that they may lay hold of eternal life.

20 Timothy, guard that which is committed to you, turning away from the empty chatter and oppositions of what is falsely called knowledge;

21 which some profess, and thus have wandered from the faith. Grace be with you. Amen.

Psalm 50

God saying he does not need animal sacrifices but calls for a sacrifice of thanksgiving and to call upon him in the day of trouble

1 The Mighty One, God, Yahweh, speaks, and calls the earth from sunrise to sunset.

2 Out of Zion, the perfection of beauty, God shines out.

3 Our God comes, and does not keep silent. A fire devours before him. It is very stormy around him.

4 He calls to the heavens above, to the earth, that he may judge his people:

5 “Gather my saints together to me, those who have made a covenant with me by sacrifice.”

6 The heavens shall declare his righteousness, for God himself is judge. Selah.

7 “Hear, my people, and I will speak; Israel, and I will testify against you. I am God, your God.

8 I don’t rebuke you for your sacrifices. Your burnt offerings are continually before me.

9 I have no need for a bull from your stall, nor male goats from your pens.

10 For every animal of the forest is mine, and the livestock on a thousand hills.

11 I know all the birds of the mountains. The wild animals of the field are mine.

12 If I were hungry, I would not tell you, for the world is mine, and all that is in it.

13 Will I eat the meat of bulls, or drink the blood of goats?

14 Offer to God the sacrifice of thanksgiving. Pay your vows to the Most High.

15 Call on me in the day of trouble. I will deliver you, and you will honor me.”

16 But to the wicked God says, “What right do you have to declare my statutes, that you have taken my covenant on your lips,

17 since you hate instruction, and throw my words behind you?

18 When you saw a thief, you consented with him, and have participated with adulterers.

19 “You give your mouth to evil. Your tongue frames deceit.

20 You sit and speak against your brother. You slander your own mother’s son.

21 You have done these things, and I kept silent. You thought that I was just like you. I will rebuke you, and accuse you in front of your eyes.

22 “Now consider this, you who forget God, lest I tear you into pieces, and there be no one to deliver.

23 Whoever offers the sacrifice of thanksgiving glorifies me, and prepares his way so that I will show God’s salvation to him.”

Hebrews 11

reference to Abraham looking for the city whose architect and builder is God

1 Now faith is assurance of things hoped for, proof of things not seen.

2 For by this, the elders obtained testimony.

3 By faith, we understand that the universe has been framed by the word of God, so that what is seen has not been made out of things which are visible.

4 By faith, Abel offered to God a more excellent sacrifice than Cain, through which he had testimony given to him that he was righteous, God testifying with respect to his gifts; and through it he, being dead, still speaks.

5 By faith, Enoch was taken away, so that he wouldn’t see death, and he was not found, because God translated him. For he has had testimony given to him that before his translation he had been well pleasing to God.

6 Without faith it is impossible to be well pleasing to him, for he who comes to God must believe that he exists, and that he is a rewarder of those who seek him.

7 By faith, Noah, being warned about things not yet seen, moved with godly fear, prepared a ship for the saving of his house, through which he condemned the world, and became heir of the righteousness which is according to faith.

8 By faith, Abraham, when he was called, obeyed to go out to the place which he was to receive for an inheritance. He went out, not knowing where he went.

9 By faith, he lived as an alien in the land of promise, as in a land not his own, dwelling in tents, with Isaac and Jacob, the heirs with him of the same promise.

10 For he looked for the city which has the foundations, whose builder and maker is God.

11 By faith, even Sarah herself received power to conceive, and she bore a child when she was past age, since she counted him faithful who had promised.

12 Therefore as many as the stars of the sky in multitude, and as innumerable as the sand which is by the sea shore, were fathered by one man, and him as good as dead.

13 These all died in faith, not having received the promises, but having seen them and embraced them from afar, and having confessed that they were strangers and pilgrims on the earth.

14 For those who say such things make it clear that they are seeking a country of their own.

15 If indeed they had been thinking of that country from which they went out, they would have had enough time to return.

16 But now they desire a better country, that is, a heavenly one. Therefore God is not ashamed of them, to be called their God, for he has prepared a city for them.

17 By faith, Abraham, being tested, offered up Isaac. Yes, he who had gladly received the promises was offering up his one and only son,

18 to whom it was said, “your offspring will be accounted as from Isaac”;

19 concluding that God is able to raise up even from the dead. Figuratively speaking, he also did receive him back from the dead.

20 By faith, Isaac blessed Jacob and Esau, even concerning things to come.

21 By faith, Jacob, when he was dying, blessed each of the sons of Joseph, and worshiped, leaning on the top of his staff.

22 By faith, Joseph, when his end was near, made mention of the departure of the children of Israel; and gave instructions concerning his bones.

23 By faith, Moses, when he was born, was hidden for three months by his parents, because they saw that he was a beautiful child, and they were not afraid of the king’s commandment.

24 By faith, Moses, when he had grown up, refused to be called the son of Pharaoh’s daughter,

25 choosing rather to share ill treatment with God’s people, than to enjoy the pleasures of sin for a time;

26 accounting the reproach of Christ greater riches than the treasures of Egypt; for he looked to the reward.

27 By faith, he left Egypt, not fearing the wrath of the king; for he endured, as seeing him who is invisible.

28 By faith, he kept the Passover, and the sprinkling of the blood, that the destroyer of the firstborn should not touch them.

29 By faith, they passed through the Red Sea as on dry land. When the Egyptians tried to do so, they were swallowed up.

30 By faith, the walls of Jericho fell down, after they had been encircled for seven days.

31 By faith, Rahab the prostitute, didn’t perish with those who were disobedient, having received the spies in peace.

32 What more shall I say? For the time would fail me if I told of Gideon, Barak, Samson, Jephthah, David, Samuel, and the prophets;

33 who, through faith subdued kingdoms, worked out righteousness, obtained promises, stopped the mouths of lions,

34 quenched the power of fire, escaped the edge of the sword, from weakness were made strong, grew mighty in war, and caused foreign armies to flee.

35 Women received their dead by resurrection. Others were tortured, not accepting their deliverance, that they might obtain a better resurrection.

36 Others were tried by mocking and scourging, yes, moreover by bonds and imprisonment.

37 They were stoned. They were sawn apart. They were tempted. They were slain with the sword. They went around in sheep skins and in goat skins; being destitute, afflicted, ill-treated

38 (of whom the world was not worthy), wandering in deserts, mountains, caves, and the holes of the earth.

39 These all, having had testimony given to them through their faith, didn’t receive the promise,

40 God having provided some better thing concerning us, so that apart from us they should not be made perfect.

Recap

The message in order, in a few minutes of reading.

Pastor Mark opened the last Sunday of the year in Hebrews 13, reading verses 1 through 16 and focusing his preaching on verses 9 through 16. The sermon sits inside the church's series through Hebrews, whose running argument is that Jesus is better than everything that came before him. With that foundation laid, the practical counsel of chapter 13 becomes the natural place to end the year.

What was said

The opening verses of Hebrews 13 set the table: love the brothers and sisters, show hospitality to strangers, remember those in prison, hold marriage in honor, keep free from the love of money. Pastor Mark moved through these quickly, pausing on the promise that God will never leave or forsake his people. He noted that in Greek the statement carries five negatives stacked together, making it about as emphatic as language allows. Because of that promise, he said, the right answer to any calling God places on a person is "as the Lord is my helper, yes."

Verse 9 is the hinge: "Do not be carried away by varied and strange teachings." Pastor Mark said his goal from the pulpit is always to say what the text says, not to argue denominational positions, and that warning fits the moment at the turn of a new year. He acknowledged that the last time he preached from this passage was the week before the pandemic shutdowns in 2020, a season that illustrated exactly what varied and strange teachings look like in practice.

To show the warning is not unique to Hebrews, he read a long string of similar passages from across the New Testament. Jesus warns in Matthew 24 that many will come claiming to be the Messiah and will deceive many. Paul in Acts 20 warns of savage wolves, and in Galatians he says anyone preaching a different gospel is to be accursed. Ephesians warns against being tossed by every wind of doctrine, Colossians against persuasive arguments and empty philosophy, and Jude names people who turn grace into licentiousness. The point across all of them was the same: the gospel is Jesus, and everything that pulls attention away from him, whether toward rigid rule-keeping or toward the idea that grace permits anything, is a distortion.

Pastor Mark named those two ditches plainly. Legalism says you must perform religion in exactly the right way to be accepted. Licentiousness says grace covers everything so nothing matters. He said the gospel is neither. It is grace that forgives people on both sides and brings them into dependence on Christ.

Hebrews 13 then moves to the altar image. The author's point is that Jesus suffered outside the gate, outside the religious center, and the call is to go out to him there rather than stay inside the comfortable structures of religiosity. Pastor Mark connected this to what the text calls "bearing his reproach," and he pressed on a division he sees in the church between proclaiming the gospel for eternal salvation and living out care for people now. His answer was that those two things belong together.

The passage closes with the sacrifices God actually wants: a continual offering of praise, the fruit of lips that give thanks, doing good, and sharing with one another. Pastor Mark pointed to two women who had come into the building the previous day simply to thank God privately, not knowing anyone would be there. He said that kind of gratitude, calling on God in a tight spot and then honoring him when he delivers, is exactly the sacrifice the text describes. It is not a religious exercise. It is the response of people who have been reached by grace.

Doing a Bible study?

Here is a guide we have prepared for you: the passages in order, questions for the group, and room to write.

  1. Pastor John worked through a long list of New Testament warnings about false and strange teachings. Which of those warnings stood out to you most, and why do you think that one landed?
  2. He described two ditches people fall into: legalism on one side and licentiousness on the other. Which ditch do you think is more of a temptation for people in our church culture, and what does it look like in practice?

0:00 We're halfway through. We've got we've got six of em under our belt. We got six more to go. I considered it this morning but I wanted to end on a a new covenant Sunday, right? The prophets are looking forward to all of their old covenant guys who are looking forward to the new covenant in Jesus and so I thought what better book to go to than Hebrews.
0:20 Hebrews is a it it hasn't the argument in Hebrews at least is that Jesus is better than and so Jesus is better than as the argument and it is in the first few or the first 12 chapters we see that Jesus is better than the prophets. Hey, that's good. That's why we chose it this morning, right? Jesus is better than the prophets. He's better than angels.
0:46 He's better than Moses and the law. He's better than Aaron's priesthood. He's better than old covenant sacrifices. He's better than the old covenant and better than those sacrifices. Jesus's blood offers that once for all, perfect atonement, making the old system of the repeated sacrifices obsolete and inferior, just a shadow of things to come that came in Jesus and Jesus is better than the law and all of the traditions associated.
1:14 So, we're going to Hebrews and all of that has been said throughout the first few chapters. We've already heard in Hebrews the Hall of Faith and we've already gotten the practicality of 12 before we get to this. Really good, really practical advice from Hebrews 13. I'll read this first and try not to preach through the whole passage but I'm really going to concentrate effort on nine through 16. So, Hebrews thirteen one through 16 today but I'm going to read this first and then I'll preach through nine through 16.
1:46 So, practical advice. After you've heard Jesus man, Jesus is better than all of these things. Jesus is what, this is the way that God has called you into his kingdom of glorious light by the light. Jesus, man. Practical advice is, alright.
2:04 Now that you've been called out of your various tribes, now that you've been called out of your various interpretations, Jesus is better than all this. Now, let love of the brothers and sisters continue. Don't matter what their background was. We've been all called out of our affiliations and into this overarching affiliation with Christ. So, let love of the brothers and sisters continue.
2:31 It's a given that it's happening at the beginning of this chapter which is really helpful. Y'all love one another. Okay. How are they going to know that we're Christians? By our love.
2:42 So, y'all let love of the brothers and sisters continue. Don't neglect to show hospitality to strangers and outsiders. For by this, some of y'all have entertained angels without even knowing it. Now, I mention every time I mention angels over the Christmas season, I say, angels are messengers. Angels are those who carry a message and sometimes, when you open yourself up, when you open up your table for table fellowship or you open up your home for hospitality and you invite people in, you might end up receiving the message from those angels, those messengers and you might not even expect it.
3:17 You're trying to do your best to help them. I think that the angel tree is that way. Like, we think what we're doing but man, what a blessing it is to be a part of what's going on. Don't neglect to show hospitality, openness to strangers. For by this, some have entertained angels without even knowing it.
3:33 Remember, the prisoners. Remember prisoners as though you're in prison with them and those who are ill treated, since you yourselves are also in this one body, we know that we have brothers and sisters who are being persecuted in other parts of the world. Now, we are not. I don't feel like we are. We're not but there are places in the world where Christianity is is really under persecution and that's true and we should be praying for them and it should cause us some concern and it should make our hearts ache but we pray for them because God does provide and he will provide.
4:09 We pray for them that they'd be strengthen in the midst of it. On a local level and on the worldwide level. Locally, Jeff, Jeff Brown has just started going to the jail here and on a fairly regular basis, he'll be there and he'll be ministering to the people there for whatever it is that they need spiritually speaking, whatever he can help with their needs otherwise and he's going to be there unified with them. If they don't know the gospel, he's going to share the gospel. If they do know the gospel, he's going there to encourage them to hold on to the faith, right?
4:41 So, Jeff has started that. If you want to be a part of that jail ministry, talk to him. I'm sure he'd love to have help. So, as though you're in prison with him, since you're in the same body, marriage. Marriage is to be held in honor among all.
4:57 Prioritize marriage. Marriage is to be held in honor among all and the marriage bed is to be undefiled. For fornicators and adulterers, God will judge. He's saying, don't let the way of the world influence your way, brothers and sisters. Marriage is to be prioritized and upheld.
5:17 It's a it's a good thing. So, make sure that your character is free from the love of money. How are doing on that, Jackson? So, make sure that your character is free from the love of money. Don't be greedy.
5:32 Be content with whatever it is that you have. That immediately makes me think of Paul's letter where he says, listen, I've learned how to be content whatever my circumstances. Whether I'm in plenty or I'm in want. Acknowledging that there are times when we're in need, right? He says, but I've learned to be content whatever the circumstances.
5:51 I'm thankful for whatever God has given me. He allows me breath in my lungs to be able to carry forth his good news and to be able to keep on going. So, be content with whatever you have and he gives a justification for that for he himself has said, I will never desert you nor will I ever forsake you. I read a sermon on this passage that I'll never leave you nor forsake you passage and in Greek, they don't mind a double negative, okay? So, in English, if we say, ain't no way I'm doing that, you know, ain't no, that's that's a double negative and it just makes people bristle, right?
6:28 Grammarians don't like that at all. Double negatives, we feel if it's two negatives, then it negates the other and it means a positive. Wait a minute. In Greek, the more negatives, the better, the more you mean it and when Jesus says, I'll never leave you nor forsake you, it's a quintuple negative, okay? Ain't no way never, no, not never.
6:49 Okay, it's maybe I did sextuple right there but it's five times in that sentence. It's it's saying, I'm not going to leave you. I'm not going to forsake you. I'm with you always. So, we can confidently say, the Lord is my helper.
7:04 I'm not going to be afraid. What will man do to me, right? This passage, the Lord is my helper. I'll not be afraid. I think of ordination ceremonies and I think we're heading towards one soon but an ordination ceremony when I was ordained, one of the things that the people did, they grilled me pretty good at a little presbytery session and they asked me a bunch of questions before time and when they decided to lay hands on and ordain me, what they ask were a bunch of questions that you endeavor to serve the Lord for the rest of your life come what may blah blah blah and the proper response to that instead of yes is as the Lord is my helper.
7:45 Yes. Right? Because the Lord is my helper, I can confidently say yes to that. I'm not going to be afraid. What's man going to do to me?
7:54 Remember, those who led you, it's kind of neat at the end of the year to look back and go, okay, there's been a lot of change in our church in this past year with Carl leaving, having somebody voted in, having somebody brought in, having new blood in here. Remember those who led you. Remember the ones who spoke the word of God to you and considering the result of their conduct, be imitating their faith. Jesus Christ is the same yesterday, today, and forever. Amen.
8:26 And then it starts the passage I want to preach. Don't be carried away. Do not be carried away. Don't be carried away by what? Don't be carried away by varied and strange teachings.
8:41 My goal up here is always to just say what it says. We're doing it somewhat systematically, chronologically, whatever. We're trying to go verse by verse, paragraph by paragraph usually. And I try not to get into, okay, this is what the Southern Baptists believe about this. This is what the American Baptists believe about this.
8:58 This is not what the Methodists think. This is not Catholic, Protestant. What I try to say is just what it says. Give the context, Old Testament context, New Testament context, the political system of the time so that you can hear what the message of what it's actually saying. It's not a dispensational or reformed or whatever covenantal view.
9:19 Not that those are necessarily bad things, but why don't we just pay attention to what it says? Right? So don't be carried away by varied and strange teachings. The last time I presented from this passage from Hebrews was the week before we were all flattening the curve in 2020. Okay.
9:42 Don't be carried away by various and strange teachings. Would you say that was a time where there were some varied and strange teachings? Lord, have mercy. I mean it. Yeah, various of different colors and stripes of different diverse properly of various kinds, manifold.
9:58 There was a full spectrum of understanding and belief about what was going on during that time and the word of God did not change but we saw a segment of society only paying attention to what this said and we saw another segment was only paying attention to what this said and the truth is in the whole council of God's word, there's a lot of wisdom and let's just stay right there. Let's unify instead of diversify. Alien, new, novel, strange, foreign, outside influence. So that's don't be carried away by varied and strange teachings. Now, this is a warning.
10:34 It's obvious. At the end of this year, looking forward to the next year, I think it's appropriate to look back and say, what do we need to be looking out for? Be looking out for varied and strange teachings. You're going to hear all kinds of nonsense but is this unusual in the New Testament? Are there other similar warnings in the New Testament?
10:51 There are warnings, okay? So, are there other similar warnings? Can you think of any? I have a list. How about I read the list?
10:59 And there are a lot more than this but these are just the ones that I thought sounded appropriate with the context of this and there are a lot of em. Would you just get ready for a scripture bath? I'm going to just pour it on you. Matthew from the lips of Jesus. Matthew 24.
11:12 See to it that no one misleads you for many will come in my name claiming, I am the Christ and they will deceive many. I am the Christ. When he says Christ, that is the Greek word Christos that is translating the Hebrew word Meshiach which is Messiah. I am the Messiah. Really, in context, what Messiah means, what Christ means is I am the anointed one.
11:38 Many are gonna come saying, I'm the only one that can solve this problem. And they will deceive many. Don't go for it. Turn your eyes upon Jesus. Look full in his wonderful face.
11:52 Follow after him and his way. That'll be good for you. Acts 20, I know that after my departure, this is Paul. I know that after I leave, savage wolves are going to come in here among you and they're not going to spare the flock. Even from your own number, folks will rise up and they'll distort the truth and they will attempt to draw away disciples after them.
12:16 Don't go for it. Romans 16, end of the letter. It's funny how awesome often comes up after all the theological underpinning and the application and then we get these warnings. Now, I urge you brothers and sisters, keep your eye on those who cause dissensions and hindrances that are contrary to the teaching which you learned, and turn away from them. Pay attention so that you can turn away from them.
12:41 That's not gospel I'm turning away from it. Second Corinthians 11. Why? This is I hear Paul's voice. Why?
12:50 Why? Because I don't love you. No. God knows I love you. But what I'm doing, I'm going to continue to do so that I may cut off opportunity from those who desire an opportunity to be regarded just as we are in the manner about which they're both we're they are boasting.
13:06 For such men are false apostles. They exist. People have taken it on themselves to go out and deceive. They're deceitful workers. They disguise themselves as apostles sent out ones for Christ but no wonder because even Satan disguises himself as an angel of light.
13:24 Therefore, it's not surprising if his servants also disguise themselves as servants of righteousness whose end will be according to their deeds. Not everybody that says that they're Christian or Christian. That's true but you, you pay attention to Christ. Turn your eyes on Jesus. Maybe I just say it like this, Jesus, man, right?
13:43 Jesus, man. That's it. That's one of my best friends. His testimony is that for the first few months, after Jesus had gotten a hold of his life, it changed the way he thought it, changed the way he acted, it changed the way he interacted with people, and a lot of times through tears, people say, man, you're different. What's the deal with you?
14:01 And he just say, Jesus, man. And I love that. That's the point of this message. Jesus is better than all of these other things. Here we go.
14:10 Back to this. Galatians one. Paul says, after he calls him foolish Galatians, who has bewitched you? I'm amazed that you're so quickly deserting Jesus who called you by the grace of the anointed one for a different gospel. You're going back to the law instead of trusting in the grace of Christ.
14:32 It's really not another gospel. Only there are some of you of who are disturbing you and they want to distort the gospel of Christ. They want you to do these things in a certain way and you have to do everything just so in order to be saved. Paul says, but even if we, me, Timothy, even if we or any angel that you see from heaven comes down and preaches a gospel, contrary to that which which preached to you freely, freely, grace of God, that one is to be accursed. Just as we have said before, so I say again now, if any man is preaching to you a gospel contrary to what you receive, he is to be cut off, a curse, anathema.
15:10 Outside, that is somebody that's stirring up trouble. The good old gospel way, it is about Jesus. Ephesians, as a result, we are no longer to be like children tossed here and there by waves and carried about by every wind of doctrine and by the trickery of men, by craftiness and deceitful scheming. Let no one deceive you with empty words. It's because of these things that the wrath of God comes upon the sons of disobedience.
15:39 Therefore, don't be partakers with them. You will have voices on both sides. So, we've got a legalistic bitch. We've talked about this a lot. There's legalism that says, you must do these religious things in this order, in this way in order to be saved.
15:51 Good Christians act like this only. This is the way they are. If they don't act like us, exactly like us, then they're not here. They're not Christians and then we've got the folks over here. So, man, you know, I got all the liberty in Christ.
16:03 Do whatever I please. He made me with these desires. I'm just going to go for em. That's libertine, licentiousness. That's not the gospel.
16:12 The gospel is a gospel of grace. He forgives both of those and brings you into a place dependent upon his grace. Colossians, I say this so no one will delude you with a persuasive argument. I told this story in the first service and I I didn't plan to but I'm going tell it again in this one. So, when I first came out here as as an intern, Roseanne's Bible study that's been going on forever up at the senior center was being handled by Jean DeMarsh and Jean called me and probably her upper 80s and she's leading this service and there are bunch of little ladies in this Bible study.
16:49 Asked her, she said, would you come to that? There's this guy who keeps keeps on kind of upsetting things. He keeps on saying stuff that's not true and it's not based on anything. He argues against the Bible and he argues against stuff and he keeps on doing until all the little ladies in the room are just not in agreement with him and it breaks my heart and can you come and just see what you can do to help? And I said, well, she said, I don't have the I don't have the biblical like understanding to to negate what he's saying.
17:17 So, would you come in? I said, sure and I went and sat in a little old lady's Bible study when I was 40, man, you know, and the guy that was coming in was a man and he came in and when it would start, he'd wait for the scripture to be read and then he would start blasting the authority of scripture, the inerrancy of scripture. He would question everything that was said and he keep on talking and I saw what she was saying. He'd start and I'd say, hold on just a second. Hey, wait just a second and talked about the history.
17:46 That's not quite so and blocked him a couple of different ways gently, I thought and then, he was getting a little more and more testy and mad if that somebody was questioning him at all and I finally kind of said, hey, sir, this is a Bible study. Everybody in the room except for you believes that this is true. We're hanging on the word of God as if it's the very words of God because we believe that it is, and you're here just to throw shade on it and negate that time after time? I said, this is not really the place for that. You're welcome to speak up, but when you're trying to take the word of God and trash it, that's we're not gonna stand for that.
18:28 And he goes, if you'd let me just say my peace for five minutes, I'd get out of here and I'd never come back. I said, you have the floor. And he spoke for a little more than five minutes. He pointed his finger in my face and said, I apologize for people like you. Those who believe the gospel is exclusive to only Christians and only this and only that.
18:47 I said, listen, sir. I let him speak but God is communicating a way that all may be saved. He has an open invitation for anybody who would accept. The exclusivity comes by the will of the person that has presented with the gospel. And so, he did say his peace, dragged his oxygen tank, and left.
19:08 And he didn't come back. And so when I was up for being the next guy here, the board that was on at the time receiving letters from people, Jean DeMarsh wrote a letter that said, I saw him bounce somebody from a Bible study. Yeah. See So, to it that nobody deludes you with a persuasive argument. See to it that no one takes you captive through philosophy or empty deception according to the traditions of men, according to the elementary principles of this world.
19:43 The one that I see as an elementary principle of this world, at least our world, is the capacity that we have for choosing sides. We almost always if you're betting on which bird's going to fly off a fence first, people will split into two different teams. The elementary principles of this world are deceptive. Christ is not. He's calling us into a unity.
20:08 He's calling us into oneness. Second Thessalonians two, I got to write on this one this for first being the Bible this week. That y'all not be quickly shaken from your composure. This is what I'm praying. That y'all not be quickly shaken from your composure or be disturbed either by a spirit, small s, or a message or a letter as if it was from us that is to the effect that the day of the Lord has already come.
20:35 Let no one in any way deceive or upset you. If you put your faith in Christ, you won't miss the last day. Okay? You don't have to figure out the Bible code to be figuring out that Jesus loves and he's calling us into the kingdom by his grace. First Timothy four.
20:55 But the spirit explicitly says that in later times, some will fall away from the faith. Don't be surprised by that. Paying attention to deceitful spirits and the doctrines of demons by means of the hypocrisy of liars who are seared in their own conscious as with a brand in our. Men who forbid marriage and advocate abstaining from foods. Those are strange and various doctrines.
21:19 Okay? They abstain from foods which God has created to be gratefully shared in by those who believe and know the truth. Don't be dragged aside by that. He goes on in first Timothy six. If anyone advocates a different doctrine than the gospel and does not agree with these sound words, those of our Lord Jesus Christ and with the doctrine conforming to godliness, that person is conceded and understands nothing.
21:45 But he has a morbid interest in controversial questions. Do you know anybody that has morbid interest in controversial questions? There are a lot of folks. And they dispute about words, out of which arise envy and strife and abusive language and evil suspicions and constant friction between men of depraved mind and deprived of the truth. I think so often of the turn your eyes upon Jesus.
22:11 Look full in his wonderful face and the things of earth will go strangely dim in the light of his glory and grace. Leave all that other stuff behind. Everything that the world is arguing about is really answered in Christ and following after him. Those who suppose that godliness is a means of gain. He says elsewhere, yeah, there are folks who preach the gospel for the wrong reasons.
22:36 Ah, whatever. Oh, Timothy. Timothy, guard what has been entrusted to you, the gospel. Avoiding worldly and empty chatter and opposing arguments and what is falsely called knowledge. You can figure out all kinds of different theological persuasions and you can argue them tooth and nail but ultimately, that is not the gospel.
23:03 Beloved, don't believe every spirit. Test the spirits to see whether they're from God because many false prophets have gone out into the world. Jude, beloved, while I was making every effort to write to you about our common salvation, I did feel the necessity to write to you appealing that you contend earnestly for the faith which was once for all handed down to the saints. For there are certain persons that crept in unnoticed. Those who were long beforehand marked out for this condemnation, ungodly persons who turn the grace of our God into licentiousness and deny only deny our only master and Lord Jesus Christ.
23:41 A lot of these seem to be aimed at the legalistic ditch because I think that as Christians, as religious people, we tend to go for this ditch but this one's explicitly is aimed at this ditch, right? There are people that say, oh, it just doesn't matter. The grace of God covers it all. Why don't I just send more so that grace may abound? No.
23:59 It's for this ditch too, the gospel. These are men who are hidden reefs in your love feasts. When they feast with you without fear, carrying only for themselves, they're clouds without water, they're carried along by winds, they're autumn trees without fruit, they're doubly dead, they're uprooted. These are the folks he's talking about. The people who would delude you into thinking that, hey man, if it feels right, do it.
24:24 Or no, you must do it exactly this way. Both of those are covered by this. So, are there similar writings in the New Testament? We've only made it through half of one verse. The rest of it's pretty fast.
24:35 Yes. Yes. Yes. There are warnings throughout scripture that say, stick with the gospel. It's Jesus, man.
24:43 So here we go back to Hebrews. Do not be carried away by buried and strange teachings for it is good for the heart to be strengthened by grace. Amen. Grace is central. God's grace must be central.
24:58 If it's about religiosity, it's not grace. Okay? God's grace must be central. It's not foods, eating them in this perfect way through which those who were so occupied, they weren't benefited by doing that thing in the proper way, the way that they thought was right. That doesn't benefit them at all.
25:21 There may be all manner of other sincere religious practices and we do baptism different from some other denominations. We do communion different. We do communion different. Half the time we do it here, don't do it the same way. There may be all manner of other sincere religious practices that really are not beneficial at all, and different different strokes, different folks.
25:42 God's grace must be central. If grace is not in the center of it all, then, it's not the gospel. Do y'all, are y'all with me? We have an altar, Christians. We have an altar from which those who serve the tabernacle have no right to eat.
25:59 Now, of course, it's talking about the Jewish practices which at this time when Hebrews was written were still continuing. They'd only continue until seventy AD when that temple was torn down. All of those practices were pointing towards Jesus, the author of Hebrews is saying, Jesus, man, it's about Jesus. We have an altar from which those who serve the tabernacle have no right to eat. For the bodies of those animals whose blood is brought into the holy place and it's a big show by the high priest as an offering for sin.
26:26 Those bodies are burned outside the camp. Therefore, Jesus also. Jesus also that he might sanctify the people through his own blood, the ultimate sacrifice. He suffered outside the gate. Remember the cross where that happened outside the gate?
26:45 So, let's go outside the gate. Let's go out with him. Let's go out to him outside the camp. Let's don't get hung up in religiosity. Let's go out there.
26:59 I'm gonna skip that. Bearing his reproach. So, right now, there are there's a division in our country and that's obvious. I won't talk about that. There's a division in Christianity.
27:12 Which is it? Is it the priority of proclamation of the gospel or is it living out the social gospel? Marry those two things together. Bring those two things together. Yes, it is about eternal salvation and it's about helping people now.
27:26 Both of those things matter. Be willing to bear Jesus' reproach. He did not do the religiously popular thing most of the time. He was open to people who were hurting. So, Jesus, be willing to bear his reproach.
27:42 Be willing to stand up for what you believe Jesus would do. For here, we don't have a lasting city on Earth. We're pilgrims and strangers here but we're seeking that city which is to come. In Hebrews 11, it talks about Abraham and says, that he was looking for the city which has foundations, whose architect and builder is God and we should be thinking with a future mindset of we live in today for now in light of eternity. Through him then, that's Jesus.
28:12 Through Jesus then, let us continually be offering up a sacrifice of praise to God. That's the sacrifice that he's looking for. That is the fruit of lips that give thanks to his name. It was a real blessing to me yesterday to just accidentally be here, right? Accidentally here when these two ladies came in and for them to do this, they didn't know anybody would be here.
28:38 Actually, Blake was up in the booth working on his part too but for them to come in and just say thank you to God privately. I got to pray with them before they left too. I'll mention them again towards the end. Through him then, let's continually offer up a sacrifice of praise to God. That is, let's have the fruit of lips that give thanks to his name.
28:58 This is God speaking in Psalm 50. If I were hungry, I wouldn't tell you. What are you going to do about it? The world is mine. All that it contains.
29:07 Should I eat the flesh of bulls or drink the blood of male goats? No. No. Offer to me a sacrifice of thanksgiving. Pay your vows to the most high.
29:21 Call upon me in the day of trouble, and I shall rescue you, and you will honor me. Ain't that sweet? That's literally what this little lady said yesterday. I was in a really tight spot, and I called out to God, and he delivered me. Don't neglect doing good.
29:38 Don't neglect doing good. It's not a religious exercise. Can't be. Don't neglect doing it though and don't neglect sharing. Take care of one another.
29:51 For with those kind of sacrifices, God is pleased. So, here we are. One more slide and this slide is just the same thing said a slightly different way. Don't get carried away. Good advice.
30:08 Calm down. Y'all look pretty calm this morning, honestly. Don't get carried away by various and strange teachings but Jesus, man, because of Christ, because you're saved by God's grace, and because you're sanctified by God's grace, because of that, do be ready to go outside the camp. Bring em in. Bring them in.
30:27 Bring them in from the fields of sin. Go out. Rescue the perishing. Care for the dying. Go to the jails.
30:32 Go. Go. Go. Be ready. Go outside the camp.
30:35 Bear the reproach of Christ and because of Christ, Jesus, man. Do continually be giving to God. It's not just the offering, right? It's not just that. It is that but it's not just that.
30:48 Do continually be given to God. Be given him praise. Be given him thanksgiving. What is his will for you in Christ Jesus? His will for you in Christ Jesus that you do this.
30:56 Be grateful. Whatever the circumstances. And do good to one another. Take care of one another. Do unto each other as you would have it done to you.
31:10 Take care of one another. Be generous and caring and hospitable. Do good to one another and share and call upon God in the day of trouble. He'll rescue you and you will honor him. He loves it when we do that.
31:23 This is the sacrifice that's pleasing to God. So, as we approach this New Year, I'll invite Judy to come back to the front. I'll leave the slide up there for a minute. All of this is only possible in Christ. Amen.
31:37 And so, I think we're going to sing come thou long expected Jesus and you just think that from the minor prophets to the author of Hebrews, that was a huge leap forward from the old covenant to the new covenant and so in our hearts, we pray is one of the lines in this. What we're praying for is that Jesus, the son of God, would come to bear on everything in our lives, on our decisions, on our level of gratitude, on our joy, on everything that Jesus would come to bear on that. Would you stand with me and we'll close with
