Ezekiel 34
woe to bad shepherds who eat the sheep rather than care for them, parallel to Micah 3
1 Yahweh’s word came to me, saying,
2 “Son of man, prophesy against the shepherds of Israel. Prophesy, and tell them, even the shepherds, ‘Thus says the Lord Yahweh: “Woe to the shepherds of Israel who feed themselves! Shouldn’t the shepherds feed the sheep?
3 You eat the fat. You clothe yourself with the wool. You kill the fatlings, but you don’t feed the sheep.
4 You haven’t strengthened the diseased. You haven’t healed that which was sick. You haven’t bound up that which was broken. You haven’t brought back that which was driven away. You haven’t sought that which was lost, but you have ruled over them with force and with rigor.
5 They were scattered, because there was no shepherd. They became food to all the animals of the field, and were scattered.
6 My sheep wandered through all the mountains, and on every high hill. Yes, my sheep were scattered on all the surface of the earth. There was no one who searched or sought.”
7 “‘Therefore, you shepherds, hear Yahweh’s word:
8 “As I live,” says the Lord Yahweh, “surely because my sheep became a prey, and my sheep became food to all the animals of the field, because there was no shepherd. My shepherds didn’t search for my sheep, but the shepherds fed themselves, and didn’t feed my sheep.”
9 Therefore, you shepherds, hear Yahweh’s word:
10 Thus says the Lord Yahweh: “Behold, I am against the shepherds. I will require my sheep at their hand, and cause them to cease from feeding the sheep. The shepherds won’t feed themselves any more. I will deliver my sheep from their mouth, that they may not be food for them.”
11 “‘For thus says the Lord Yahweh: “Behold, I myself, even I, will search for my sheep, and will seek them out.
12 As a shepherd seeks out his flock in the day that he is among his sheep that are scattered abroad, so will I seek out my sheep. I will deliver them out of all places where they have been scattered in the cloudy and dark day.
13 I will bring them out from the peoples, and gather them from the countries, and will bring them into their own land. I will feed them on the mountains of Israel, by the watercourses, and in all the inhabited places of the country.
14 I will feed them with good pasture; and their fold will be on the mountains of the height of Israel. There they will lie down in a good fold. They will feed on fat pasture on the mountains of Israel.
15 I myself will be the shepherd of my sheep, and I will cause them to lie down,” says the Lord Yahweh.
16 “I will seek that which was lost, and will bring back that which was driven away, and will bind up that which was broken, and will strengthen that which was sick; but I will destroy the fat and the strong. I will feed them in justice.”’
17 “As for you, O my flock, thus says the Lord Yahweh: ‘Behold, I judge between sheep and sheep, the rams and the male goats.
18 Does it seem a small thing to you to have fed on the good pasture, but you must tread down with your feet the residue of your pasture? And to have drunk of the clear waters, but must you foul the residue with your feet?
19 As for my sheep, they eat that which you have trodden with your feet, and they drink that which you have fouled with your feet.’
20 “Therefore thus says the Lord Yahweh to them: ‘Behold, I, even I, will judge between the fat sheep and the lean sheep.
21 Because you thrust with side and with shoulder, and push all the diseased with your horns, until you have scattered them abroad;
22 therefore will I save my flock, and they will no more be a prey. I will judge between sheep and sheep.
23 I will set up one shepherd over them, and he will feed them, even my servant David. He will feed them, and he will be their shepherd.
24 I, Yahweh, will be their God, and my servant David prince among them. I, Yahweh, have spoken it.
25 “‘I will make with them a covenant of peace, and will cause evil animals to cease out of the land. They will dwell securely in the wilderness, and sleep in the woods.
26 I will make them and the places around my hill a blessing. I will cause the shower to come down in its season. There will be showers of blessing.
27 The tree of the field will yield its fruit, and the earth will yield its increase, and they will be secure in their land. Then they will know that I am Yahweh, when I have broken the bars of their yoke, and have delivered them out of the hand of those who made slaves of them.
28 They will no more be a prey to the nations, neither will the animals of the earth devour them; but they will dwell securely, and no one will make them afraid.
29 I will raise up to them a plantation for renown, and they will no more be consumed with famine in the land, and not bear the shame of the nations any more.
30 They will know that I, Yahweh, their God am with them, and that they, the house of Israel, are my people, says the Lord Yahweh.
31 You my sheep, the sheep of my pasture, are men, and I am your God,’ says the Lord Yahweh.”

Habakkuk 3
though fig tree does not produce fruit, will trust the lord, parallel to Micah's hope amid judgment
1 A prayer of Habakkuk, the prophet, set to victorious music.
2 Yahweh, I have heard of your fame. I stand in awe of your deeds, Yahweh. Renew your work in the middle of the years. In the middle of the years make it known. In wrath, you remember mercy.
3 God came from Teman, the Holy One from Mount Paran. Selah. His glory covered the heavens, and his praise filled the earth.
4 His splendor is like the sunrise. Rays shine from his hand, where his power is hidden.
5 Plague went before him, and pestilence followed his feet.
6 He stood, and shook the earth. He looked, and made the nations tremble. The ancient mountains were crumbled. The age-old hills collapsed. His ways are eternal.
7 I saw the tents of Cushan in affliction. The dwellings of the land of Midian trembled.
8 Was Yahweh displeased with the rivers? Was your anger against the rivers, or your wrath against the sea, that you rode on your horses, on your chariots of salvation?
9 You uncovered your bow. You called for your sworn arrows. Selah. You split the earth with rivers.
10 The mountains saw you, and were afraid. The storm of waters passed by. The deep roared and lifted up its hands on high.
11 The sun and moon stood still in the sky, at the light of your arrows as they went, at the shining of your glittering spear.
12 You marched through the land in wrath. You threshed the nations in anger.
13 You went out for the salvation of your people, for the salvation of your anointed. You crushed the head of the land of wickedness. You stripped them head to foot. Selah.
14 You pierced the heads of his warriors with their own spears. They came as a whirlwind to scatter me, gloating as if to devour the wretched in secret.
15 You trampled the sea with your horses, churning mighty waters.
16 I heard, and my body trembled. My lips quivered at the voice. Rottenness enters into my bones, and I tremble in my place, because I must wait quietly for the day of trouble, for the coming up of the people who invade us.
17 For though the fig tree doesn’t flourish, nor fruit be in the vines; the labor of the olive fails, the fields yield no food; the flocks are cut off from the fold, and there is no herd in the stalls:
18 yet I will rejoice in Yahweh. I will be joyful in the God of my salvation!
19 Yahweh, the Lord, is my strength. He makes my feet like deer’s feet, and enables me to go in high places. For the music director, on my stringed instruments.

John 15
Jesus telling disciples there are many more things to share but they cannot handle them yet, used to close the sermon
1 “I am the true vine, and my Father is the farmer.
2 Every branch in me that doesn’t bear fruit, he takes away. Every branch that bears fruit, he prunes, that it may bear more fruit.
3 You are already pruned clean because of the word which I have spoken to you.
4 Remain in me, and I in you. As the branch can’t bear fruit by itself, unless it remains in the vine, so neither can you, unless you remain in me.
5 I am the vine. You are the branches. He who remains in me, and I in him, the same bears much fruit, for apart from me you can do nothing.
6 If a man doesn’t remain in me, he is thrown out as a branch, and is withered; and they gather them, throw them into the fire, and they are burned.
7 If you remain in me, and my words remain in you, you will ask whatever you desire, and it will be done for you.
8 “In this is my Father glorified, that you bear much fruit; and so you will be my disciples.
9 Even as the Father has loved me, I also have loved you. Remain in my love.
10 If you keep my commandments, you will remain in my love; even as I have kept my Father’s commandments, and remain in his love.
11 I have spoken these things to you, that my joy may remain in you, and that your joy may be made full.
12 “This is my commandment, that you love one another, even as I have loved you.
13 Greater love has no one than this, that someone lay down his life for his friends.
14 You are my friends, if you do whatever I command you.
15 No longer do I call you servants, for the servant doesn’t know what his lord does. But I have called you friends, for everything that I heard from my Father, I have made known to you.
16 You didn’t choose me, but I chose you, and appointed you, that you should go and bear fruit, and that your fruit should remain; that whatever you will ask of the Father in my name, he may give it to you.
17 “I command these things to you, that you may love one another.
18 If the world hates you, you know that it has hated me before it hated you.
19 If you were of the world, the world would love its own. But because you are not of the world, since I chose you out of the world, therefore the world hates you.
20 Remember the word that I said to you: ‘A servant is not greater than his lord.’ If they persecuted me, they will also persecute you. If they kept my word, they will also keep yours.
21 But all these things will they do to you for my name’s sake, because they don’t know him who sent me.
22 If I had not come and spoken to them, they would not have had sin; but now they have no excuse for their sin.
23 He who hates me, hates my Father also.
24 If I hadn’t done among them the works which no one else did, they wouldn’t have had sin. But now have they seen and also hated both me and my Father.
25 But this happened so that the word may be fulfilled which was written in their law, ‘They hated me without a cause.’
26 “When the Counselor has come, whom I will send to you from the Father, the Spirit of truth, who proceeds from the Father, he will testify about me.
27 You will also testify, because you have been with me from the beginning.

Recap
The message in order, in a few minutes of reading.
The pastor worked through the first five chapters of Micah, the sixth of the twelve minor prophets, showing how the book holds judgment and hope in tension rather than separating them. He traced Micah's announcements against Samaria and Jerusalem alongside his forecasts of the Messiah, pointing toward the same Jesus his own congregation now looks back to. The service ended mid-chapter, with the next installment promised for a future Sunday.
What was said
Micah was a man from Morasheth Gath, about 25 miles southwest of Jerusalem, writing around 750 to 700 BC while both the Northern and Southern Kingdoms had been drifting from God for roughly five hundred years. Isaiah was writing at the same time, but where Isaiah's book is longer and broader, Micah is specific: the Messiah will be born in Bethlehem, he will be a shepherd, and he will be our peace. The pastor color-coded the slides red for judgment and yellow for hope, because those two threads run side by side through every chapter.
The opening chapters announce that the Lord himself will be a witness against Samaria and Jerusalem. The "high places" where idol worship happened will be trodden down, the cities of Samaria reduced to rubble. Micah does not deliver this coldly. He says he must mourn and wail himself, go barefoot, tear his clothes, because the wound is incurable and judgment is genuinely coming on his own people, including his own hometown.
The second chapter shifts to a woe against those who plan evil at night and carry it out by day, people who seize fields, take houses, and strip the unsuspecting of what little they have. The pastor connected this directly to things happening in the congregation's own week, including a family defrauded of three thousand dollars. The scammers and the oppressors of Micah's time are not a historical curiosity; the minor prophets line up with the present in ways that are hard to miss.
Chapter three turns the same charge against the leaders specifically. Rulers are supposed to know the difference between good and evil, yet Micah describes them tearing the people apart like meat in a cauldron. Priests teach for pay, prophets divine for money, and all of them lean on a false sense of security, telling themselves that catastrophe cannot come because God is on their side. The pastor set that against Micah's own self-description in verse eight: filled with the Spirit of the Lord, with justice and with courage to name what is wrong. A doctor who tells a seriously ill patient that nothing is wrong is not being kind.
Chapter four opens the hope wide. The mountain of the Lord will be raised up, nations will stream to it, and swords will be beaten into plowshares. Even the gathering of those who limp and those who have been scattered, though it sounds like more judgment, is framed as God taking his people through a hard place in order to lift them up. The Babylonian exile is named directly, and then immediately followed by the promise that there in Babylon the Lord will redeem them from the hand of their enemies, a pattern the pastor said sounds exactly like Daniel and the three Hebrew children.
Chapter five brings the passage the congregation hears every Christmas Eve, Bethlehem Ephratah, too small to be among the clans of Judah, yet the place from which a ruler will come whose origins are from long ago, from the days of eternity. This one, Micah says, will be our peace. The pastor noted that what once bothered him about people who lived before Jesus is actually the mirror image of where his own congregation stands: those people had to look forward to Messiah the same way Christians now look back to him, and Jesus is the center point of all of it.
The session closed at chapter five verse nine, where the remnant of Jacob is described as being among the nations like dew from the Lord, and where the promise stands that all of God's enemies will ultimately be eliminated. The pastor acknowledged the service stopped there not because the book does, but because Micah 5:10 through chapter 6, including the well-known verse about doing justly, loving mercy, and walking humbly, still lies ahead for the next gathering.
Doing a Bible study?
Here is a guide we have prepared for you: the passages in order, questions for the group, and room to write.
- Micah describes himself as mourning and lamenting even as he delivers God's word of judgment. What does his reaction tell us about how we should feel when we see people facing consequences for turning away from God?
- The sermon pointed out that Micah keeps moving back and forth between judgment and hope throughout the book. How does that pattern change the way you hear the hard parts of the message?
