possessing these qualities keeps you from being ineffective and unproductive in your knowledge of the Lord Jesus Christ

8 For if these things are yours and abound, they make you to be not idle or unfruitful in the knowledge of our Lord Jesus Christ.

eyewitnesses of Christ's majesty at the transfiguration, hearing the voice from heaven on the holy mountain

16 For we did not follow cunningly devised fables, when we made known to you the power and coming of our Lord Jesus Christ, but we were eyewitnesses of his majesty.

17 For he received from God the Father honor and glory, when the voice came to him from the Majestic Glory, “This is my beloved Son, in whom I am well pleased.”

18 We heard this voice come out of heaven when we were with him on the holy mountain.

2 Peter 2:4-10

if God did not spare angels, the ancient world, or Sodom and Gomorrah but rescued Noah and Lot, then He knows how to rescue the godly from trials

4 For if God didn’t spare angels when they sinned, but cast them down to Tartarus, and committed them to pits of darkness, to be reserved for judgment;

5 and didn’t spare the ancient world, but preserved Noah with seven others, a preacher of righteousness, when he brought a flood on the world of the ungodly;

6 and turning the cities of Sodom and Gomorrah into ashes, condemned them to destruction, having made them an example to those who would live in an ungodly way;

7 and delivered righteous Lot, who was very distressed by the lustful life of the wicked

8 (for that righteous man dwelling among them, was tormented in his righteous soul from day to day with seeing and hearing lawless deeds):

9 the Lord knows how to deliver the godly out of temptation and to keep the unrighteous under punishment for the day of judgment;

10 but chiefly those who walk after the flesh in the lust of defilement, and despise authority. Daring, self-willed, they are not afraid to speak evil of dignitaries;

Paul's thorn in the flesh and God's response that His grace is sufficient and power is made perfect in weakness

7 By reason of the exceeding greatness of the revelations, that I should not be exalted excessively, there was given to me a thorn in the flesh, a messenger of Satan to torment me, that I should not be exalted excessively.

8 Concerning this thing, I begged the Lord three times that it might depart from me.

9 He has said to me, “My grace is sufficient for you, for my power is made perfect in weakness.” Most gladly therefore I will rather glory in my weaknesses, that the power of Christ may rest on me.

Recap

The message in order, in a few minutes of reading.

This message came from 2 Peter 1 and 2, and the pastor walked the congregation through what he called the "carrot and the stick" of the letter: the rich promises and qualities believers are called to grow in, followed by Peter's sharp warning about false teachers and the certainty of God's judgment on them. He was honest that this text was one he had wrestled with for a month, and that preaching the stick is harder than preaching the carrot. The thread running through everything was the authority and reliability of God's word, and what it means to let it bend you rather than bending it to suit yourself.

What was said

the pastor opened in chapter one, where Peter calls his readers to actively build on their faith by adding goodness, knowledge, self-control, perseverance, godliness, mutual affection, and love. These are not what get a person into God's family, but they are how a believer walks that out. The sobering possibility Peter raises is that someone can be cleansed from past sins and still end up ineffective and unproductive, having forgotten what God did for them.

Before moving to the harder material, the pastor spent time on verses 20 and 21, which he had introduced the previous week. He laid out the different ways translations handle the phrase "no prophecy of scripture came about by the prophet's own interpretation," noting that the Greek word for "own" (ideos) carries a sense of something private and peculiar to a single person. He concluded that the most natural reading in context is that no individual, whether the original prophet or a later reader, gets to twist scripture into their own private meaning. The bedrock point is that prophecy came from God as His Spirit carried the biblical writers along.

That foundation matters because the very next thing Peter does, without a chapter break in the original, is turn to false prophets and false teachers. The pastor made the connection plain: the reason Peter insists on the reliability and divine origin of scripture is that there are and will be people who corrupt it. They "secretly introduce destructive heresies," and the congregation was pointed to how often that pattern shows up quietly rather than all at once.

Two heresies got particular attention. The first is the idea that sincerity is what counts, that it does not matter what you believe as long as you mean it. The pastor called that idea American, understandable in a culture built on religious freedom, and still wrong. The second is a kind of soft pluralism where belief is fine as long as nobody gets too serious about it, because seriousness leads to conflict. He said that if the blood of Christ is exclusively what saves, and the world around us is lost, those two heresies should change the way we live and the way we speak to people.

Peter's condemnation of false teachers is tied to their motivation. The pastor named the pattern directly: power, sex, and money are what the rest of chapter two addresses. The fabricated stories, the exploiting of congregations, the greed underneath it all. He was careful to say that this is not a surprise to God, and that judgment on such teachers has been, as Peter puts it, hanging over them for a long time.

The "if, if, if, then" structure of verses 4 through 10 was the next major movement. Peter stacks three examples: angels who sinned and were sent to chains of darkness, the ancient world judged by the flood while Noah was protected, and Sodom and Gomorrah destroyed while Lot was rescued. The pastor paused on Lot in particular, calling him an unlikely candidate for the word "righteous," but noting that Peter and the writer of Hebrews both use it, because Lot's distress at the sin around him and his trust in God were real, even if his life was not tidy. The point of the whole structure is the conclusion: the Lord knows how to rescue the godly from trials and to hold the unrighteous for punishment.

The pastor closed the body of the sermon by pulling back to Peter's own motivation. Peter had been told by Jesus to feed His sheep, to tend His lambs, and he was doing that in this letter by refusing to leave new believers unwarned about those who would lead them astray. The specific heresy in view was gnosticism, the idea that what you do with your body does not matter if your spirit holds the right beliefs. Peter's answer, and the pastor's, is that the body and its habits matter, that what you practice, you become enslaved to, and that the word of God is the reliable light that reveals all of it.

Here is a guide we have prepared for you: the passages in order, questions for the group, and room to write.

  1. Pastor Nathan walked through the list in 2 Peter 1 of qualities to add to your faith, from goodness all the way to agape love. Which of those qualities feels most out of reach for you right now, and why?
  2. Pastor Nathan said it is possible to be a Christian, to have your sins forgiven, and still be ineffective and unproductive. Does that sit uncomfortably with you? What do you think that actually looks like in a person's life?

6:28 My Sister's Closet. So My Sister's Closet is a it's kind of like a clothing swap. It's not swapping the clothing that you have on. Every time I try to describe this, have somebody come up and tell me that what I did was not the best way to describe it. My sister's closet is like a thrift store that happens for one day here on May 18.
6:49 It'll be clothes that you have that are gently used, you can bring in before that, during the week before that, and we will arrange them here. Someone will arrange them here, and they'll have them set up in sizes and set up styles, that sort of thing, so that you can pick clothes that would be good for you. But for a $10 entrance donation to raise money at the door, Saturday, May 18, you can come in and and bring some things in and take some things away, $10. Open to the community, my sister's closet. Nurse and mother's room, there is one downstairs, and there is a live feed going on downstairs so you can still hear the sermon if you wanted a contemplative space.
7:26 There was a baby that took advantage of that this morning that started off the service and was very vocal and continued very vocal until they went downstairs and enjoyed the quiet of that room. So missing a message. If you miss one, we do have a podcast on Facebook. We do video and audio so you can see the slides. Facebook Live, that's First Baptist of Jackson, Wyoming.
7:48 And if you wanna go back and hear a sermon from sometime in the past, you can go back on our website and hear the audio versions of both the nine and the 11:00 services. We have connect hours still happening at ten ish between the services down the hall with coffee and donuts and fruits and stuff. And for anything else that I've forgotten to say during the announcements, there will be in your bulletin that and prayer requests. And if you check into those, sometimes I overlook those. I don't think about them, but we have prayer requests for what's going on in different folks' lives.
8:21 Right now, there seem to be a whole lot of people who are struggling physically, and we see some who have come back from recent physical struggles, and it's really nice when we when we're keeping up with the prayer list and we know, because they show back up and it's just so nice to be in God's house this morning. John and Helen are back. So, that's really really nice. And for those of you who know Samantha McVeigh, she had she has been back and forth to the hospital, back and forth to the hospital. Would y'all be praying for her?
8:50 I'm not sure her name is on that list in the bulletin but if you would be praying for her, I'd really really appreciate that. Check your bulletin. Anything else that I'm forgetting? Nope. Anybody?
9:03 There's one. Yes. Okay. Thank you. This is their church when they're here though.
9:23 This is their church, their son of Mike and Cheryl Bowles. Thank you for mentioning that. Would you all stand up and greet one another and we will bring you back together with a song. Glad you're here.
9:40 Speaker 2Learning to lean. We're gonna be
9:42 Speaker 1learning to lean. We're gonna sing through this three times. It's a nice waltz.
9:59 Speaker 2Learning to lean, learning to lean, I'm learning to lean on Jesus, finding more power than I'd ever dreamed I'm learning on Jesus just like that Learning to lean, learning to lean, I'm learning to lean on Jesus, on Jesus finding more power than I'd ever dreamed I'm learning Amen.
11:15 Speaker 1Leaning on the everlasting arms and learning to lean on the everlasting arms is good. I believe lord but help me with my unbelief. Help me where I struggle. I will serve thee. Hymn number six sixty.
11:45 Speaker 2I was nothing before you found me you have given life to broken pieces ruined lives are why you died on Calvary your touch was what I longed for you have given life to Amen.
12:23 Speaker 1Y'all can have a seat. I'm going to invite the frontline team for to come forward. I don't know why that sounds like Jim Reeves. That song sounds a lot like Jim Reeves. I don't know if he's ever sung it before.
12:33 That's the first time I've ever heard that song. Would y'all pray with me? God, I thank you for the morning that you've given us. What a beautiful place and a time to be alive and be together. Thank lord the about the corporate nature of the church about how it is when we come together to praise you.
12:54 I know lord that when we wake up in the morning, we can. Feel the air filling our lungs and we can breathe out praise to you but lord, there's something special about when we come together and we acknowledge you together. We praise you together. We pray to you together and so God, I pray that you would use our togetherness, our oneness, and unity to make a difference in this community for you and in this world. Lord, we have hinted at that we are a worldwide church already this morning and what we're singing.
13:24 Would you, lord, use us to do your kingdom's work in this community and beyond to the uttermost parts. I pray that you'd take the tithes and offerings that are put in these plates, lord and that you would use em to do your kingdom's business that no one would divert or thwart them that they would go and accomplish the purpose that you have for em just like your word does, lord. So, we pray that we would be actively about your business, spreading your good gospel to the ends of the earth. Use us in the way you see fit, do your will. Jesus name, amen.
17:29 So, here we are. This morning, we're up to first Peter two one twenty, and I'm I introduced it last week. I said, this is one twenty and twenty one, and I gave one explanation of it that was the NIV's interpretation, and I told you that each time that, you go to translate a piece of scripture, you have some editorial choices that you have to make. You try to keep it as close to the authorial intent as you can. And so every modern translation has taken that in hand, taken the manuscript evidence in hand, and gone forward trying to transcribe it accurately, and that's good.
18:12 But sometimes you come up with different interpretations, and so I told you I was gonna bring this back up. Before I do that, I wanna go into a little bit of the first chapter so we get up to speed. Okay? And I wanna say this too. I have prayed over and battled with this text for the past month.
18:34 Just kinda looking forward to it and praying through it and praying in this direction. But let me tell you first of all, Peter is a short book. Second Peter is a really short book. It's chapter one, chapter two, chapter three. That's it.
18:48 There are only three chapters. Chapter one is the carrot. It is these are the good things. These are the good things, the precious and great promises that God has. Add to your faith these things.
18:58 I'll see it in just a minute. We'll see it together. And then chapter two is the stick. It is about judgement especially for false teachers but also for anyone who would go with them and then chapter three affirms both chapter one and chapter two and closes it off with dear friends. Dear friends.
19:18 So, he's writing to Christians primarily. It's to Christians. It's not an evangelistic book. It is a teaching book for those who have already trusted in Christ. He mentions it multiple times throughout but he does have a strong word for you not to be deceived and for us not to deceive ourselves or anyone else.
19:35 Are you with me? Alright. I'm gonna go through the carrot first. I'm much more comfortable preaching the carrot than the stick. Okay?
19:43 But I'm gonna preach it because it's there, and we're gonna go through it together. So this is it. For this reason, make every effort to add to your faith goodness. Now Peter, by this point, has introduced himself, and he's introduced his readers and the readers are to those who have received from God an excellent faith just as excellent as our own. So, he's preaching and speaking primarily to Gentile Christians and saying that God has brought you into his family.
20:11 It's God's goodness and his sovereignty. He's done that through but you've chosen it too and you're with him and for this very reason, y'all, now that you are believers, make every effort to add to your faith. Your faith is what gets you in. It is by belief that you come to be removed from the kingdom of darkness and placed into the kingdom of light. But how you walk that out is something that depends on how you submit to the authority of God in your life, to the authority of scripture in your life, to the authority of the Holy Spirit in your life.
20:39 His divine power has given you all you need for life and godliness and for this very reason, make every effort to add to your faith, goodness, and the goodness, knowledge, and the knowledge, self control, and the self control, perseverance, and to perseverance. Godliness, you know why? Because you're gonna need it. You're gonna need it to get through in this dark time, in this dark place, in this corrupt generation. He was saying in the first century, we can still say in the twenty first century.
21:07 Add to your faith, goodness, and knowledge, and self control, and perseverance, and the perseverance add godliness. Godliness, think about things in the way that God thinks about those things. Recognize the things that are good and recognize the things that are bad because sometimes it's hard to tell the difference. Add to your perseverance, godliness, and the godliness, mutual affection, that's brotherly love and the brotherly love add agape love. That's the the pinnacle of it all is God's unconditional, sticky kind of love that the body of Christ should have for outsiders and bring them in.
21:40 The way we love one another and our loving towards them should draw people into fellowship with God. So, that's the way he starts off. He says, if you possess these qualities and what qualities? The goodness and knowledge and self control and perseverance and godliness and mutual affection and love. If you possess these, then, increasing measure then, they'll keep you from being ineffective and unproductive and who wants to be ineffective and unproductive?
22:05 In our knowledge of the Lord Jesus Christ. I hadn't gone into it in a while but I'm going to go into it now. We say like Jesus loves you and what is it? Why is it that you go to church? Well, Jesus, man.
22:18 You know, Jesus and we call him by his name because that's his name but think about this for just a second. Peter is calling it for for him and for them and for us. He's saying, our collectively, our lord. You can either say, yes, lord or you can say no but you can't say no, lord. Lord means he's in charge.
22:41 Our lord, Jesus, his name, Christ, the anointed one, exclusive and only. There's no one else like him. He is the only. In the knowledge of our lord, Jesus, Christ, but whoever does not have them is nearsighted and blind, forgetting that they have been cleansed from their past sins. Now, it is possible to be cleansed from your past sins and then, be ineffective and unproductive.
23:12 Isn't that a terrible thought? Wouldn't you rather recognize my sins have been forgiven? Lord, what would you have me do? I will serve thee because I love thee like the song says. You have given life to me.
23:23 You've washed me clean. You've made me whiter than snow. Lord, what do you want to do with me now? I can hardly wait to see what's going on. Whoever does not have these, and those are goodness, knowledge, self control, perseverance, it's possible to to not have them, to be a Christian, and to deny that.
23:44 That's a scary thought but it is possible. Forgetting that they've been cleansed from their past sins. Therefore, my brothers and sisters, make every effort to confirm your calling. For if you do these things, you'll never stumble irrevocably and you will receive a rich welcome into the eternal kingdom of our lord and our savior, Jesus Christ. Be practicing the things of God.
24:08 Recognize it. So, I will always remind you, Peter says of these things, even though you know them, you're Christians, you know em, you've already accepted these things as true and you're firmly established in em. You believe them and that's what's giving you the new ground in the kingdom of light but I think it's right to refresh your memory as long as I live in the tent of this body. Said, I'm living in this temporary dwelling place, my body and as long as I live here, I'm going to keep on reminding you because I know that I'll soon put this tent aside as our lord, Jesus Christ, has made clear to me and I I will make every effort to see that after my departure, you will always be able to remember these things. You know, Peter was murdered '65, '66, '67 right in there, the beginning part of Nero's persecution And we're still reading this because he made every effort to write down the things that he was gonna remind us of after his departure.
25:13 And then he just goes into a personal experience and then he'll follow the personal experience up. He says, for we did not follow cleverly devised stories, things that were made up when we told you about the coming, the second coming, by the way, the Perusia, the second coming of our Lord Jesus Christ and power but we were eyewitnesses of his majesty. I saw it. Me, James, John, I, James, and John saw him. He received honor and glory from God the father when the voice came to him from the majestic glory saying, this is my son whom I love.
25:49 With him, I am well pleased and we talked about the transfiguration last week. How Jesus was transfigured before them and he began to shine with the glory that he had had before coming to Earth. We ourselves heard this voice that came from heaven when we were with him on the Holy Mountain. He goes on from there and starts the into the passage I'm going to talk about today. We also have the prophetic message as something completely reliable.
26:19 So, he's saying, I don't depend only on my personal experience. My personal experience is valid. More than one person saw it. It was Jesus and his glory. It was the voice of God the father.
26:29 It was shown at his baptism but it was shown on this mount of transfiguration and he is going to come again in power, he says. We also though have the prophetic message. It's confirmed by his experience, but this is the bedrock foundation. We have the prophetic message as something that is completely reliable, and you will do well to pay attention to it as to light shining in a dark place. How many of you would agree that we live in sort of a dark place?
26:59 It's beautiful, but it's a dark place. And pretty much everywhere on Earth is pretty dark place, spiritually speaking. You will do well to pay attention to it as to light shining in a dark place. That's an external thing. The light is shining in a dark place is there is this there is this truth in scripture and it shines a light on everything that is going on around it in darkness.
27:25 Are you with me? It's external. So, an insidious heresy of our time is all you have to do is just believe that little light inside yourself. No. Believe the prophetic message given from God that is completely reliable.
27:43 You'll do well to pay attention to it as to light shining in the dark place. It can lighten up your heart until that day dawns and the morning star rises in your hearts. Above all, it is of first importance or above all, you must understand that no prophecy of scripture came about by the prophet's own interpretation of things. That's one way to take that verse and that's fine. He follows up with 21 and says, for prophecy never had its origin in the human will but prophets, though human, spoke from God as they were carried along by the Holy Spirit.
28:18 This is as far as I got last week. This is true. Verse 20 there is true the way that it is interpreted here in the NIV. I don't have a problem with their interpretation. It's accurate grammatically, and it's accurate.
28:31 Above all, you must understand that no prophecy of scripture came about by the prophet's own interpretation of things. But since this clears that up and says prophecy never had its origin in the human will, but prophets, biblical prophets spoke though they were human, they spoke from God as they were carried along by the Holy Spirit. Let me illustrate this for just a second. This is another version. That's one interpretation of it.
28:59 That's the NIV. That's the reason I used the NIV for this one because they made an editorial choice right there. And it's fine, grammatically speaking, it's fine, but I don't think that's what Peter is talking about here. This is the ESB's version of it and it says, knowing this first of all that no prophecy of scripture comes from someone's own interpretation. That one's left ambiguous whether it means the prophet or the reader.
29:24 It's ambiguous which is fine because it's ambiguous in the Greek too. For prophecy, for no prophecy was ever produced by the will of man but men spoke from God as they were carried along by the Holy Spirit. So, God inspires scripture. There's a dual authorship. God through his prophets has spoken.
29:47 That is God had the thought. He sends it through the prophet and we have a reliable, completely reliable word from God. Are you with me? I think that the interpretation that this is going for. I've given you two options now.
30:03 One is it's the prophet's own interpretation and second is the reader's own interpretation. No prophecy of scripture is really about the prophet's interpretation or the readers. This is the word right there, the own in in there. It's ideos. Ideos is the Greek word.
30:23 You know what idiosyncratic means? It's a quirk that is someone's own thing. They're quirky in a certain sort of way. Ideos is properly it is uniquely one's own, peculiar to that individual. Idios is stronger than the simple possessive pronoun own.
30:40 It's emphatic, and it means private and personal. It's their own unique way of seeing things. Like, if you read a novel, oftentimes novels, the writer of a novel has a very unique voice. It's idiosyncratic to that particular person. Right?
30:54 We also get our word idiot from this word. Really? And sometimes our thoughts are just idiotic. They just are. They're our own little thing that we have made up.
31:07 So if I look at this, there's one more interpretation, and these two are both exegetical and good. They come out of the text. It's either the prophet's own or the reader's own. Those two options are completely valid. Choose which one you will.
31:20 I think it's because of context, I think it's more about the reader's own interpretation of it. But there's one more, and the other one is verse 20 refers not to how we interpret prophecy, but how prophets interpret history. The point is that the private individual cannot interpret that prophecy on his own. Are you with me? Not quite?
31:44 Have I confused you? So there are some churches and some authoritarian structures throughout the history of the church in different ways and different places. When a church really feels like we're right and we get to tell you what's right, they would interpret this to say, no prophecy of scripture comes from one idiot's opinion. It comes from the church's opinion, and we say what it means, and you just have to listen to us. I think what's obvious in the text, I don't think there's any doubt about it at all by the time you get to the end of second Peter.
32:20 He's saying that don't play with God's word. He delivered the word. Let it bend you rather than you bending it. Are you with me? Okay.
32:33 So, we've clarified that. Now, we're going into something more difficult. Prophecy was never produced by the will of man. I I think about this too. So my job up here is to present what it says, what it means, hopefully how we're gonna apply it to our lives, but what it says and what it means primarily, proclaim it.
32:53 I think of Amos, and Amos gives me a lot of comfort because Amos, the little short minor prophet, right? I don't know what size he was. His book is short, though. Anyway, he he has he has given us this prophecy and it was bad news for the king and when he's going to go deliver bad news to the king, it's a a prophecy from God and the king's guy receives Amos, the prophet and Amos says, the prophecy and the guy says, the king's not going to accept that. That's not good news.
33:25 He goes, well, I know it's not good news but listen to me, I was neither a prophet nor the son of a prophet but the word of the Lord came to me and he said, deliver this message to the king and I'm trying to do that. I was minding my own business. I'm not doing this for the money. I was minding my own business, tending my sycamore figs. I was taking care of my sheep and goats and the word of the Lord came to me and said, deliver this message as unpleasant as it is to the king and the king rejects it outright and he did so to his peril.
34:00 Do you understand that? The guy rejects it and says, you can't bring that message. It's bad news. Now, there might have been other prophets in the land and there were actually in Amos' case. There were other guys that had good news for the king but it was a lie and they were doing it for the money.
34:15 Are you with me? If so Amos, I like Amos because he says, I'll mind my own business when this dropped in my lap, but I have to be faithful to deliver the message just as I received it, and here it is. So here we go. This is the two choices right here between that. It's the no prophecy was ever produced by the will of man but have you ever heard anybody that produced a prophecy that was their own will?
34:39 Oh, I'm seeing right now. I've got a vision. I've got a vision that God's going take me home if I don't raise $80,000,000. No prophecy was ever produced by the, no scriptural prophecy was ever produced by the will of man but men spoke from God as they were carried along by the Holy Spirit but there were, there's no chapter break in the original. It just goes straight through but there were, I have to say, there were false prophets among the people just as there will be false teachers among you.
35:15 There are. There are false teachers. James says, let not many of you be teachers because you'll incur a harsher judgment. And so for someone who is a teacher who stands up here each Sunday trying my best to send it, I had a lot of soul searching to do this week to make sure that there weren't any competing agendas besides just presenting what this says. There were also false prophets among the people just as there will be false prophets among you and they will secretly introduce destructive heresies.
35:53 That's terrible, and it's true. One of the most destructive heresies of our time, I think, is this one. It doesn't matter what you believe as long as you're sincere. Does that sound just like our society? It is our society.
36:11 It's American. It's American to have religious freedom, and that's good. It was set up to protect people, and I think that that's wonderful. And it doesn't matter what you believe. And I don't care what you sincerely believe.
36:22 You have the right to believe that, but you can be wrong. Okay? So that's one way. It doesn't matter what you believe as long as you're sincere. That is heresy.
36:31 That is wrong. It does matter what you believe. There is an exclusivity to our Lord Jesus Christ that will only be for those who have made Christ their lord, trusted him at his word. Another pluralist heresy is this, because in order to live together and live in peace together, we have made the decision that we're not going to fight about things. So, there are a lot of people who believe this.
37:03 It doesn't matter what you believe so long as you believe it doesn't really matter. Alright. Did that sink in? Do you know what that means? I don't care.
37:12 You know, if whatever they, whatever they want to believe but they don't need to get too radical about it. Well, if it's exclusively the blood of Christ that saves. And we live in a world that's lost and dying. It should change the way we live. It should change the way we speak to people.
37:35 They certainly have the right to be wrong, and we can certainly be wrong. I should say that too. This says that they will secretly introduce destructive heresies even denying the sovereign lord. Once you've said that all roads lead to heaven, you have denied the Lord. You've denied the master.
37:57 They will secretly introduce destructive heresies even to the denying of the sovereign lord who bought them and that will bring swift destruction on themselves. Now, many, many will follow their depraved conduct. You know, they raised the $80,000,000 by the way. They did. They raised it and God didn't take him.
38:20 So, he next time he said, see, you're, I was right. Many will follow their depraved conduct and it will bring the way of truth into disrepute. Many will follow after their depraved conduct and will bring the truth into into disrepute. In my lifetime, forty seven years, I remember a lot of different scandals of the church that have called the truth to be in disrepute because of the fallible man that had been delivering it and at some point got off track. They went for a destructive heresy and it might have been insidious and they didn't even realize it at the time.
39:05 Oftentimes though, it's about power or sex or money, and he goes into those things explicitly in the rest of this chapter. Like I said, this is the chapter about judgment. In their greed, here it is, money. In their greed, these teachers will exploit you with fabricated stories. Now, if I were to come in here and say, you know what?
39:26 I have gotten a holy vision. I've taken the last two weeks and I've prayed and God has shown me one idiot, right? He's shown me the way and if everyone here this morning would just give $7.70 if you can afford. If you can't afford it, just go on faith and trust and give it to me. That's what God is waiting to unleash health and wealth and wisdom on you and all you have to do is believe and trust me.
39:57 That's not right. I don't know what God has for you, and I don't know what he's gonna unleash on you and why. I don't know what he's telling you to do. We do have to be cautious about the possibility that there could be greedy, false teachers among us. Peter says that there will be.
40:17 They will exploit you with fabricated stories, and Peter says their condemnation has long been hanging over them, and their destruction has not been sleeping. It's not gonna surprise God when somebody takes his word and distorts it for their own gain, whether that be through greed or power or sensuality. Now this next paragraph, and I'll stop at the end of this paragraph. I'll stop at the end of 10, but this is gonna be about listen, it's an if, if, if, if, then is what it is. For if God did not spare the angels when they sinned, some of the angels sent.
40:54 They're more powerful than we are. They are more cognizant of God than we are in a lot of ways. They did, if God did not spare angels when they sinned and they did sin, you can refer back if you want to to several different places. Some people go to Jude, some people go back to Isaiah, some people go back to other old times but the verse says it itself. There were angels that sinned and if God did not spare the angels when they sinned but he sent them to hell.
41:22 Say, Lucifer, devil, and those who followed after him. If God did not spare the angels when they sinned but he sent them to hell, putting them in chains of darkness to be held for judgement and if he did not spare the ancient world when he brought the flood on its ungodly people but he did protect Noah. He's he throws that in there. There is judgment, judgment, there's rescue. He did protect Noah, a preacher of righteousness and seven others.
41:53 We get elsewhere in the Bible that Noah preached for one hundred and twenty years to turn from their wicked ways. While he was constructing The ark on God's command. And seven others, if he condemned the cities of Sodom and Gomorrah by burning them to ashes and made them an example of what is going to happen to the ungodly and said so. And if he rescued Lot, a righteous man. Now, that right there carries a lot.
42:20 Sorry. No pun intended. He rescued Lot and it calls him a righteous man. Have you read about Lot? It's hard to call that man righteous but Lot did trust in God.
42:32 Abraham prayed and Lot was rescued. A righteous man declared to be so not just here but also in Hebrews because he was distressed by the depraved conduct of the lawless for that righteous man who was living among them day after day, he was tormented in his righteous soul by the lawless deeds that he saw and heard. How many y'all feel like lots sometime? Where you just feel like we're surrounded by awful, ugly, filthy sin. It doesn't have to just be in Vegas although I met somebody that recently went to Vegas and said, glad I don't live there.
43:14 It's here too. It's everywhere. But that righteous man living among them day after day, he was tormented in his righteous soul by the lawless deeds that he saw and heard. Y'all we live in a dark place. We live in a dark time and it should be tormenting to a soul that is after God to see it happen.
43:32 If this is so and it is so, he both judged and rescued. If this is so, then the Lord knows how to rescue godly from trials and to hold the unrighteous for punishment on the day of judgement. The Lord knows how to rescue the godly from trials. The word right there is the lipsis. The lipsis means trials or temptations.
43:54 It's based on context and I think that both of those are true too. The Lord knows how to rescue you from your trials that you are going through. They may not be temptations but it's external stuff that is coming down on you by somebody else's will or someone else's sin and it puts you in a place of trial. God is able to rescue you out of that trial but he's also able to rescue out of that temptation. He is able to rescue you out of any temptation that is before you.
44:26 It's especially true of those who follow the corrupt desire of the flesh and despise authority. I said at the beginning, the authority of God is something that we need to voluntarily put ourselves under and the authority of scripture, we have this prophetess message that is completely reliable and when the Bible says something is wrong, it's not good for us. We don't have to question why. If society says something is right and the Bible says something is wrong, the Bible is completely reliable. We can still be loving and believe that it's wrong because the Bible says it's wrong.
45:04 Are you with me? Okay. That's the this is the end. Like, that's the last slide. I hate to leave you right there but the force of the text and the emphasis of the text is the stick this week.
45:17 It's about judgment and it's hard for me because I know that it's grace and mercy and peace and love are all extended all the time but what ticks Peter off is when, you know, Christ restored him and said, do you love me? He said, yes. He said, feed my sheep. Do you love me? Yes.
45:36 Feed my sheep. Do you love me? Tend my lambs, my little ones. And Peter is attempting to do that to live out the call of Christ for his life. He's reminding the people of the things.
45:47 Christ said to live in holiness. Christ also said, if someone causes one of these little ones to go astray, it would be better for him on the day of judgment to have a millstone tied around his neck and be thrown into the depths of the sea. Peter's remembering that, and he sees that among these new believers, there are people that are introducing destructive heresies. One of them was gnosticism, and gnosticism teaches that you can believe in the spirit something to be true, but what you do with your body doesn't really matter. Peter's saying, that's not true.
46:25 What you do with your body will cause you to be enslaved to whatever it is, and it could be a lot of different things. The text goes on, 11 on through the end of the chapter. It's pretty hard, and I'll get to it. I'm probably gonna skip Mother's Day though. Yeah.
46:40 I'll just tell you right now that I'm gonna preach a Mother's Day message on Mother's Day. If God works it up where I can preach second Peter two eleven through the end of the chapter on Mother's Day, I'll let you know. But to me, this is the hardest one in the book because it's directed at people who are teaching specifically, but it's also directed at anybody who might go with them. Are you with me? Okay.
47:03 God forgive us where we fail you and bring us into your truth. You say that you will guide us into all truth, that your Holy Spirit's job is to convict of sin and to convince us of your goodness and righteousness to illuminate your word which is a completely reliable message. So, lord, would you be doing that in our lives and lord, would you lead us in the way that you would have us go? That we would not straight to the left or to the right, that we would not fall into the ditch of legalism or in the ditch of license but we would keep our eyes fixed on Jesus, the author and perfect of our faith In Jesus name, lord, would you do your will in our way as we follow after you where you lead lord we'll follow. Amen.
47:51 Would y'all stand with me? We're going to sing hymn number five ninety three where he leads me. I can hear my savior calling. The other thing that I want to mention right here is you do have truth. You do have truth.
48:05 It's in God's word and you don't need me to explain every word of it to you. I'm I love it and I love to do it and if you come to me and ask, I'll be glad to open it up with you and we'll go through it but to have that authoritative word of God right there and accessible and trustworthy is really really good. I mentioned a few weeks ago to read through the book of John or read through the book of Acts or read through the book of Romans and just see what it is that God was doing then and what he is doing now by you submitting your will to his and your and his authority. Jesus
48:47 Speaker 2I can hear my savior calling I can hear my savior calling I can hear my savior calling take thy cross and follow follow me Where he leads me, I will follow. Where he leads me, I will follow. Where he leads me, I will follow. I'll go with him, with him all the way. Judgment.
49:40 Amen. I'll go with him through the judgment. Where he I will follow where he leads me I will follow I'll go with him with him all the way. He will give me grace and glory. He will give me grace and glory.
51:14 Speaker 1Amen. So, I've got a benediction for you too this morning. It's I mentioned that there are a lot of people who are hurting right now and I think that this was Paul's physical problem that he called and said, I have a thorn in the flesh. I have this thing that is bothering me God and I want for you to take it away. Please, take it away.
51:32 Now, he had seen tons of people healed and he had been the instrument of God's healing in people's lives but he had something that was bugging him and he prayed three times for God to remove it but he said to me, my grace is sufficient for you. For my power is made perfect in weakness. Trust me, right? My grace is sufficient for you. My power is made perfect in weakness and Paul says, therefore, I will boast all the more gladly about my weaknesses so that Christ's power may rest on me.
52:03 May we, this week, be willing to share our weaknesses with another so that we may be strengthened and so that they may be encouraged. In Jesus name, I pray that lord, our cognizant minds would be stayed on the fact that your grace is sufficient. We do fail you but as we look to you, you rescue us. You rescue us from the power of cancelled sin and you transform our lives into holy, righteous lives. In Jesus name, lord, would you do your work among us and through us this week.
52:38 Amen.
