Lineage of the Savior

A study guide · December 29, 2016

Watch or read it

In one paragraph

The message came from Matthew 1 and traced the genealogy of Jesus from Abraham to Joseph, showing how God worked through ordinary, flawed, and even foreign people to bring about the birth of Christ. The central point was that Joseph's quiet act of obedience, choosing to follow God's word over his own settled plan, is what we are celebrating when we celebrate Christmas. Simple obedience to God, the...

Read together

  1. Luke 2:9-11 introduced as the birth announcement of Jesus to lowly shepherds
  2. Matthew 1:1-25 primary text of the sermon, read through the genealogy and birth narrative of Jesus
  3. Genesis 3 referenced as the seed of woman who will conquer Satan
  4. Genesis 38 referenced as the story of Tamar, described as not a pleasant story
  5. Romans 15:5-6, 13 read as a benediction closing the service

Talk about it

  1. The preacher pointed out that God chose to announce the birth of Jesus to ordinary shepherds rather than to the rich or powerful. What does that tell us about how God works, and where do you see that same pattern in your own life?
  2. Walking through the genealogy in Matthew 1, the preacher highlighted people like Tamar, Rahab, Ruth, and Bathsheba as outsiders and people with messy histories who were still included in the line of Jesus. What does their inclusion say to you about who God can use?
  3. The message noted that the list of ancestors includes kings who were clearly not good men, yet the line of God's promise kept moving forward through them. How does that shape the way you think about God's faithfulness when the people around you, or you yourself, fall short?
  4. Joseph had already made up his mind about what to do with Mary before the angel appeared to him in the dream. The preacher described his response as 'simple obedience' after hearing God's word. Is there a situation in your own life where you have already resolved on a course of action that God might be asking you to reconsider?
  5. The preacher closed by saying the message of the genealogy is that no background, no past decision, and no family history is insurmountable if a person will believe the gospel and respond in simple obedience. How does that land for you personally, and what would simple obedience look like for you this week?
