Exodus 20:1-17

the Ten Commandments listed, with particular focus on honoring father and mother

1 God spoke all these words, saying,

2 “I am Yahweh your God, who brought you out of the land of Egypt, out of the house of bondage.

3 “You shall have no other gods before me.

4 “You shall not make for yourselves an idol, nor any image of anything that is in the heavens above, or that is in the earth beneath, or that is in the water under the earth:

5 you shall not bow yourself down to them, nor serve them, for I, Yahweh your God, am a jealous God, visiting the iniquity of the fathers on the children, on the third and on the fourth generation of those who hate me,

6 and showing loving kindness to thousands of those who love me and keep my commandments.

7 “You shall not take the name of Yahweh your God in vain, for Yahweh will not hold him guiltless who takes his name in vain.

8 “Remember the Sabbath day, to keep it holy.

9 You shall labor six days, and do all your work,

10 but the seventh day is a Sabbath to Yahweh your God. You shall not do any work in it, you, nor your son, nor your daughter, your male servant, nor your female servant, nor your livestock, nor your stranger who is within your gates;

11 for in six days Yahweh made heaven and earth, the sea, and all that is in them, and rested the seventh day; therefore Yahweh blessed the Sabbath day, and made it holy.

12 “Honor your father and your mother, that your days may be long in the land which Yahweh your God gives you.

13 “You shall not murder.

14 “You shall not commit adultery.

15 “You shall not steal.

16 “You shall not give false testimony against your neighbor.

17 “You shall not covet your neighbor’s house. You shall not covet your neighbor’s wife, nor his male servant, nor his female servant, nor his ox, nor his donkey, nor anything that is your neighbor’s.”

Matthew 15:1-9

Jesus rebukes Pharisees and scribes for using the Corban tradition to void the commandment to honor father and mother

1 Then Pharisees and scribes came to Jesus from Jerusalem, saying,

2 “Why do your disciples disobey the tradition of the elders? For they don’t wash their hands when they eat bread.”

3 He answered them, “Why do you also disobey the commandment of God because of your tradition?

4 For God commanded, ‘Honor your father and your mother,’ and, ‘He who speaks evil of father or mother, let him be put to death.’

5 But you say, ‘Whoever may tell his father or his mother, “Whatever help you might otherwise have gotten from me is a gift devoted to God,”

6 he shall not honor his father or mother.’ You have made the commandment of God void because of your tradition.

7 You hypocrites! Well did Isaiah prophesy of you, saying,

8 ‘These people draw near to me with their mouth, and honor me with their lips; but their heart is far from me.

9 And in vain do they worship me, teaching as doctrine rules made by men.’”

Recap

The message in order, in a few minutes of reading.

It was Mother's Day, and Pastor Ray preached on what it means to honor your mother, drawing on the fifth commandment and several New Testament passages that reaffirm it. He acknowledged that not everyone carries the same experience of their mother into that Sunday morning, and he tried to speak to both groups. The sermon kept circling back to forgiveness as the hinge point between honoring a parent and living the life God calls us to.

What was said

Pastor Ray opened by telling the congregation he had gone back and listened to a Mother's Day sermon he preached five years earlier, in 2014, when he was working through James. He noted that almost every imperative in James, taken out of context, sounds like something your mother would say. That thread, what a mother teaches and what we do with it, ran through everything that followed.

He sang a verse of Merle Haggard's "Mama Tried" from the pulpit. He used it to make the point that no matter how hard a mother tries, what a person does with her instruction ultimately lands on that person's own shoulders. The song, he said, had been stuck in his head all week and he could not shake it.

From there he moved to the fifth commandment, reading it first from Exodus and then from Deuteronomy, where Moses restates it to the people just before they enter the promised land. He pointed out that this commandment sits at the center of the list of ten, bridging the commands about relating to God and the commands about relating to other people. It is also the one commandment that carries an explicit promise attached to it.

He brought in Paul's letter to the Ephesians, where Paul quotes the commandment directly and calls it the first commandment with a promise, and he noted that Carl would be preaching the parallel passage in Colossians the following Monday night. Then he turned to Matthew 15, where Jesus confronts the Pharisees and scribes for using the Corban loophole, declaring their resources dedicated to God in order to avoid caring for their parents. Jesus called that practice a way of making void the word of God for the sake of human tradition.

Pastor Ray then turned to the harder pastoral situation in the room. Not everyone, he said, had a mother who made honoring her feel natural or easy. He mentioned that years earlier he had given an invitation and expected people to come forward for salvation, but instead three people came to him that week asking how to forgive their mother. His answer then, and his answer in the sermon, was to start with forgiveness. He said you can forgive someone unilaterally, on your own side, without requiring the other person to participate, and he grounded that in the way God forgave first, taking the initiative and the cost himself.

He worked through a long list of the "one another" commands from the New Testament, things like bearing with one another, forgiving one another, seeking good for one another, and not repaying evil for evil. He framed the whole list as the texture of a life that is learning to honor the people God has placed around it, starting with the family you were given.

He closed by speaking directly to the mothers in the room, acknowledging that Tanya had left for Guatemala that week and he had spent the previous day with mascara in his pocket at a dance recital. He said mothers have the hardest job there is, that God knows it, and that the same grace available to everyone is available to them. He invited anyone struggling to forgive, or to be reconciled to someone, to come talk with him.

Doing a Bible study?

Here is a guide we have prepared for you: the passages in order, questions for the group, and room to write.

  1. Pastor Ray sang 'Mama Tried' and said that ultimately what we do with the instruction we've been given lies at our own feet. What does that mean to you personally, and where have you seen that play out in your own life?
  2. The commandment to honor your father and mother sits right in the middle of the Ten Commandments, between the commands about relating to God and the commands about relating to other people. What do you think that placement tells us about how God views that relationship?

3:31 Y'all can have a seat Happy Mother's Day. Glad y'all are here this morning. We are carrying on this week. What's tomorrow night? Monday nights?
3:42 Yes, Monday night. Tomorrow, we're in Colossians. Paul gives instructions for household, so we have marriage and family and work. And then, we're going to eat a meal. I don't know what it is yet, but we'll eat together.
3:55 Meal, music message, 06:00. You're invited.
3:58 At the same time as that's going... Oh, I take that back. This is first week. No. Are we...
4:03 We are not doing Awana. It's kinda summer season, so Awana is taking the time off. If you wanna bring the kids to Monday night, they're always welcome. Monday night and tomorrow night will be, like you said, family. It's gonna be children obey your parents and the Lord for their to write, right?
4:16 Okay, bring em on. That'll be good. Now, the it it's got something for all of us. Barjay, the the annual Turning Point fundraiser is happening Tuesday, May 28 for the Barjay Chuckwagon has been putting that on for a long long time, long time and that's happening again, May 28. That's Tuesday, May 28.
4:39 It's always the Tuesday after Memorial Day. The clicker is not clicking there, Blake. So, My Sister's Closet, that's happening this coming Saturday. That's May 18 for a $10 entrance donation. So at the door, you go in, you pay $10 and you'll be able to choose from all of these items in all of your sister's closet.
5:01 Is that closer to what this is? I've been doing this for five weeks now. So it's actually kind of like a thrift store. People will be bringing stuff in on the fifteenth, sixteenth, and seventeenth, and Casey McCooey and several other lady... Ladies will be there setting up.
5:16 And then it'll come in and it'll be just like a one day event but it is going to be a lot of fun. So, May 18, dollars 10 donation at the door and it's open to the whole community. That's in your bulletin. There's more information if you need to call Casey. Can do that.
5:30 Vacation Bible School is coming up. You probably saw the Miraculous Mission VBS supplies setting up back there in the back. It's going to be June 24 through the twenty eighth this year in the mornings, nine to twelve, I think it is. Miraculous Mission, Jesus saves the world is the theme. So, that's a good theme and it's a good time.
5:49 VBS is coming up. There's a nurse in mother's room available downstairs. If you need it with a live feed happening at the same time as the service up here. You can see what's going on and not miss anything down there if you if you want to do that. If you do miss a message, there are some.
6:06 I might actually refer to one that was ridiculous today in the sermon and it might be something to go back. I I went back and listen kinda cringe just wondering what it was gonna be like from a Mother's Day five years ago. It's one of them that people mention from time to time and I thought, I'm gonna go back and listen to that. You can do that. On our website, you can go back and and they're archived for for six years now or actually there are some from before I got here seven years ago.
6:32 I didn't want them to record anything for the first year because I was scared slammed to death. But anyway, we've got them recorded and archived back there and if you wanna see the messages, we've been doing those for about a year on Facebook and you can go back and see the whole like video too. So that's happening. Connect hours happen in between services. That's great down the hall.
6:53 There's coffee and juice and donuts and all kinds of nice stuff usually down there. Maybe some healthy stuff too but it's a time to connect together so we feel like one church because we are two services in this church. Two on Sunday and one on Monday. It is Mother's Day. That's up there just in case I forget.
7:11 But how are y'all this morning? Everybody fine? Does anybody here... Has anybody ever had the tradition where you're from of wearing either a white flower or a red flower? There are a few heads nodding.
7:22 Okay. Good. The sermon might make sense to y'all. Would y'all stand up and greet one another and we'll bring you back together with a song.
9:17 Know nothing but the blood of Jesus. This is all. This is all my whole handpiece nothing but the blood of Jesus. This is all my righteousness. Now flip but the blood of Jesus.
9:45 So precious. Oh, precious Nothing but nothing but the blood of Jesus. Let's pray on that.
10:15 God, truly, you are our hope, and you are our peace, and you are our righteousness. And that is why we sing to you. We do not boast in our own works. We boast in the work of you, Christ, your life, and your death, and your resurrection, and your ascension, and the new life that you give us through faith, through belief. Lord, we come before you joyful this morning and thankful.
10:40 Amen.
11:02 Me with a song. I hope and deliverance from my enemies till all my fears are gone.
11:18 Ballad.
11:19 I'm no longer staying at fear. I am a child a child of God. From my mother's womb, you have chosen me. Love that's called my name. And I've been born again.
12:00 And to your family, your blood flows through my hands. I'm no longer a child of God. I'm no longer still at fear. I am a child of God, and you split the sea. You split the sea so I could walk right through it.
12:42 My fears are chomping perfect love. You rescued me so I could stand and see. I am a child of God. Let's sing that again. You split the sea.
13:00 You spread the sea so I could walk right through it. My fears are drowned in perfect love. You rescued me so I am a child of God.
13:52 Really, that comes right out of John John one when it says, but to all who did receive him, who believed in his name, he gave the right to become children of God, were adopted into this beautiful, wonderful kingdom of God through faith, through belief. Ain't that awesome?
14:29 Before I spoke word, you were singing over me. Have been so, so good to me. Before I took breath, you breathed your life You have been so so kind
15:01 to me over the overwhelming, never ending.
15:04 Oh, the overwhelming, never me. You have been so, so good to me. When I felt no way
19:10 Would y'all pray with me? Y'all can have a seat. God, we thank you this morning for this beautiful morning. Thank you for our mothers. Everybody in this room, Lord, has one.
19:22 I'm just thankful for mine. I wanna say that out loud in the public assembly. Thank you, Lord, for mama. I thank you for what you have done. I thank you that you comfort us like a mother comforts her child.
19:36 I thank you that you are good and loving and you will mature us if we will heed your words. In Jesus name, Lord, I ask you to bless this offering this morning that we would put a bit of what we have in these plates, Lord, but that we would put ourselves at your disposal, at your service. I pray that you'd use our words this morning, that you'd use our lives this week, that you would use us to advance your kingdom. Lord, I pray that you'd multiply these tithes and offerings that go into these plates and that you do your kingdom's work with it. May nothing stand in the way.
20:16 But may we always be ready to go over every obstacle to bring someone into the kingdom of God, into the family of God. In Jesus name, would you bless this morning? Amen.
20:46 Worthy of every song we couldn't sing, worthy of every phrase we couldn't bring, Worthy of every breath we couldn't bring or live for you. Jesus, Worthy of every breath, good and great. We live for you. We live for you. Holy, there is no light here.
21:41 There is no miss hiding. Open up my eyes in wonder. Show me who you are and fill me with your heart and be with me and your love to those around me. Holy, there I will build my life upon your love. It is firm foundation.
22:49 I will put my trust in you alone. And I will not not be shaken. Holy, there is no one like you. On this side,
24:43 It's time for children's church and there they go. Yes, there's one more announcement. Sorry. If it doesn't come up on that screen, I don't say it. Sorry.
25:14 Would y'all come on up, Nancy? And would you use Carl's mic right there? Yep. Here we go. There you go.
25:27 Good morning. My name is Nancy Cummins and my announcement is in regards to the drama that the spirit of God has led me to do once again. And I'm so excited about this. It's an original script by our very own Glenn Owens. So, Glenn, if you're here.
25:49 It's gonna be, performed on June 9 at both services, and we are in need of a couple more roles to be filled. So I know there's some people out there that have the talent. And if you have the passion to do this kind of thing, please see me right after the surface in the fellowship hall or my number is in the, bulletin. So, it's gonna be really cool. It's gonna be very interesting, very different.
26:20 So if you can't be in it, I hope you'll be here to see it. Thank you.
26:27 So, I was telling you, I I went back. It's Mother's Day and I'm preaching in second Peter. In second Peter is kind of hard preaching quite honestly and back in 2014 on Mother's Day, I was preaching in James and so, James is pretty hard preaching too for coming from a guy who's I've not done this until getting here, you know, and I love the Bible and I believe that the hard teaching is great and we ought to dwell in it and hang around, but it's really hard to be the presenter of that. If your gifting is my gifting is merciful. It's mercy.
27:02 My mother has a strong mercy gifting and it's Mother's Day, so I'm thinking of her. My father has a very strong justice orientation. Very strong. And as I consider things, I consider that. And James, it it has a lot about justice in and it has a lot about controlling your tongue.
27:23 And actually, if you go back and look at James, almost every category of the 100 and something imperatives that were given, if you took them out of context and put them in your mother's mouth, they would sound exactly like she'd say, hey, you don't have anything nice to say, don't say anything at all. Tame the tongue, right? It's like looking in the mirror and just walking away like you don't know what's going on. This is things that your mom would say. Well, Peter is trying to get us to avoid some pitfalls of life and he's saying, don't go after every teacher just because they're, you know, smooth.
27:57 Don't go after every teaching or teacher. Watch out. They may be trying to kind of ensnare you, right? So, that's what Peter was doing last week and next week, we'll go back to second Peter but this week, I'm going to talk about a few other things. I'm going to do something right now.
28:13 I used to sing a song when I went back on Mother's Day twenty fourteen. I sang a song. It was funny because afterwards, I talked to Bill Miller. It was a Leonard Skynyrd song. I sang a Leonard Skynyrd song in church just picking and grinning.
28:28 The message of Simple Man was the message of James, I was saying. It's like he's saying just chill. Right? Just be simple. Don't go after the rich man's gold.
28:40 Don't go after this. Find a woman. Find love. You know, that sort of thing. So I dwelled on that.
28:46 It's 05/11/2014 is when that was. I looked it up yesterday. I'm gonna see. Lord, forgive me.
28:56 The first thing I remember knowing was a lonesome whistleblowing and a young'un's dream of growing up to ride. On a freight train leaving town not knowing where I'm bound. No one could change my mind, but mama tried. One and only rebel child from a family meet and mile. My mama seemed to know what lay in store.
29:27 In spite of all my Sunday learning, towards bad I kept on turning till mama couldn't hold me anymore. And I turned 21 in prison doing life without parole. No one could steer me right, but mama tried. Mama tried. Mama tried to raise me better, but her pleading I denied.
29:51 That leaves only me to blame because mama tried. Dear old daddy, rest his soul. Left my mom heavy low. She tried so very hard to fill his shoes. Working hours without a rest, wanted me to have the best.
30:12 Tried to raise me right, but I refused. And I turned 21 in prison doing life without the road. No one could steer me right, but
30:35 Yeah.
30:43 Paul used pagan prophets on Mars Hill. Merle Haggard, he had a lot of really, really good songs. He had a lot of songs about mama and that one is one that I have have been able to get away from all week. It ultimately lies at our feet what we do with the instruction that we've been given. You know, mama tried to raise me better but her pleading, denied and that leaves only me to blame because mama tried.
31:12 No one could steer me right but they can try. So, I mentioned the white and the red flowers in the announcement. So, where I'm from, little bitty town of Shiloh, Georgia, 492 was the population when I moved. So, at church, I we would go in on Mother's Day and there would be white flowers and red flowers. The white flowers signified that your mother had passed.
31:34 Red flowers meant your mother was still living and those were the two classifications of mothers. They were alive or dead and I had always still would wear a red flower. You know, my mother is alive and well and I've described her to y'all on multiple occasions but my mom always wore a white flower. Her mother died before I was born, four years before I was born and so my grandmother who I've mentioned multiple times in the last few months because she died in January this year. So, my dad's wearing a white flower this morning for the first time.
32:07 Had a great mother named Grace, amazing Grace. As I was looking into what do I preach? What do I preach? What do I teach? What I talk about?
32:17 I couldn't get away from Merle Haggard. So, I've done that. I've already mentioned where are we here, Blake There we go. Happy Mother's Day. I already mentioned this, the Leonard Skinner sermon What I kept being drawn back to also the 10 commandments 10 commandments and there, that's the list of em right there.
32:39 If you go and look at em, that one right there says, honor your father and your mother. That your days may be long upon the land which the Lord your God has given you. Amen. He's given to them after he has taken him out of slaves. We sang no longer a slave to fear this morning, right?
32:57 They're no longer slaves and they're walking through the desert and he says, to Moses on Sinai, signs it with the finger of God, right? He signs off on this and gives him these 10 commandments and this is one of em. Then, right before they go into the promised land, no longer they're slaves. They're going into the land that God has given them. He restates Deuteronomy means second law, the second telling of the law.
33:25 So, Deuteronomy has the 10 commandments again. It's in Deuteronomy five seven through 21 and that one says, in Deuteronomy, honor your father and your mother as the Lord your God has commanded you because he's referring back to Sinai, Exodus 10 commandments. That your days may be long and that it may be well with you in the land which the Lord your God is giving you. Where it is that he's taking you into the land of promise. He wants for you to survive.
33:59 He wants for you to do well. What does a lot of mamas have been praying, lord, let him just lift. To get past that place. Honor your father and mother. As the Lord your God has command you that your days may be long, that maybe well with you in the land which lord your God has given you.
34:17 So, that's the 10 commandments right there. This back from Exodus and I just simplified em. I took out all the other verbiage around them and put em up there. These are the 10 commandments. You shall have no other gods before me.
34:28 That's about your relationship with God. You shall make no, you shall make for yourself no no carved image. You shall not make for yourself a carved image. No idols. That's about your relationship with God.
34:40 You shall not take the name of the Lord your God in vain. That's about your relationship with God and others I think too but definitely God. Remember the Sabbath day, keep it holy, that's about God. So, those first four are how we relate to God almighty. Then, the second ones are all about our relationship to other people.
35:01 If you notice that, it's prioritized list. Treat God well. He's the Lord your God. He's taking in you into a life of promise and transformation. So, treat God well and treat people well.
35:18 What's the motto of this church by the way? With all we are, loving God and loving people through Christ. So, Jesus summarize the 10 commandments by saying, love the Lord your God with all your heart, mind, soul, and strength and love and have yours yourself. Boom. Right in the middle of that list is this one.
35:36 It's absolute center of the list and it's longer than others because it's got a promise there with it. Honor your father and your mother that your days may be long upon the land which the Lord your God has given you. So, honoring your mother today since it's Mother's Day. Dads, you got a day coming. But honoring your mother is what I want to talk about today.
36:01 So, so far, that's all Old Testament and you might think, wow, Ray goes off the New Testament. He goes back to the Old Testament. Just la la la la la. But it love your mama. Come on.
36:12 Honor your mother Ephesians six one through three says this, we already mentioned that tomorrow, Carl is going to be preaching from Colossians three and he's going to talk about husbands and wives and then he's going to say, children, obey your parents in the Lord for this is right from Ephesians. Paul quotes, honor your father and mother which is the first commandment with a promise that it may be well with you and that you may live long on the earth and Jesus concurs if you think, well, that's just Paul. It's all Bible I love this because Jesus is talking to everyone and the Pharisees and the scribes, they come up out of Jerusalem. So, they're tracking him down out into wherever he's teaching. The Pharisees and scribes came to Jesus from Jerusalem and they said, why do your disciples break the tradition of the elders?
37:13 For they do not wash their hands when they eat. And he, that's Jesus, answered them and said, and why do you break the commandment of God for the sake of your own tradition? How many of us break the commandment of God for the sake of our own traditions? Jesus goes on to say, for God commanded, honor your father and your mother He also goes on in the so that you may live long upon the earth. Did you know that the punishment for not honoring your father and mother in the Old Testament?
37:49 You know what it is, really? Stoning. Really? Thank you lord for the new covenant. Honor your father and mother that you may live long upon the earth.
38:02 I've always thought, well, if I go with my mama's advice, it means I'll live a long time. Maybe but it also means if you don't, you could be stoned for it in the Old Testament. God's serious about this. He's really, really serious about this. Jesus doubles back.
38:19 When he's talking to the Pharisees and scribes, it says, for God commanded you, honor your father and mother and all that is entailed in honor is taking responsibility and caring, loving them, right? And then he goes on and says, and whoever reviles or does not honor, father or mother must surely die. Wow. But you, Pharisees and scribes, you say, well, if anyone tells his father, it's technicality, you have said out loud. In the presence of two or three witnesses and you say out loud, what you would have gained from me, I have given to God Corbin is what they used to call it in the Old Testament Corbin is this idea that you can take away from your parents if you give to God because in priorities, your relationship with God is before your relationship with your parents but God is saying, you're cheating and you know it.
39:14 You're cheating and you know it. You're cheating your family out of what they should have. Your loving concern, care, and honor. What you would have gained from me, I have given to God or is given to God. He need not honor his father.
39:30 If anyone tells his father and mother, what you have gained from me is given to God, then he need not honor his father. That's just not true, Jesus says. So, for the sake of your tradition, you have made void the word of God. This is hard preaching too, isn't it? I think that we are wrapped up in self.
39:52 I think our country reaffirms wrapping ourselves in self. This honor your father and mother doesn't have until you're a certain age. It just keeps going, you know? Actually, Matthew fifteen seventeen when Jesus goes on, he says, you hypocrites, you're just acting. You're acting like you love God.
40:16 You hypocrites. Well or very well, did Isaiah prophesy of you, Pharisees and Scribes? When he said, this people honors me with their lips but their heart is far from me. In vain, do they worship me? Teaching as doctrines, the commandments of men.
40:39 Now, you would think, wow, that's tough, Jesus. He goes back and quotes Isaiah. So, he's going back to the Old Testament, bringing it back up. This is Isaiah twenty nine thirteen. I didn't go to with 14 here, just 13.
40:51 The Lord said, because these people draw near to me with their mouth and they honor me with their lips while their hearts are far from me and their fear of me is a commandment that's taught by men. Children obey your parents in the Lord for this is right. It it is right to follow after your parents and be obedient to them. If they were trying to get you to sin, then, yeah, your your obedience is to God for sure. It's multiple times it mentions that, says that, over and over.
41:28 But children, obey your parents. In the Lord, for this is right. Y'all thought, why'd you send the young ones downstairs then? They should be hearing this. Honor your father and mother which is the first commandment with the promise that it may be well with you and you may live long on the earth.
41:43 So, honor your mother. So, I can say with utmost confidence and love that I love my mama and my mama did a lot of really, really good things for me. She allowed me to mature as a baby by just giving me straight up unconditional love, providing the things that I needed before I knew I needed them. When I cried, she comforted me and that's the way that it was. And then when I got to be older, she gave me more and more responsibility, little more leeway, lot more advice, right?
42:22 I remember the talk with my mama actually. Like I said, she's merciful. I remember the talk with my dad too but the talk when I was a teenager was, Ray, yes, ma'am. You know you have to respect girls, don't you? And I said, yes ma'am.
42:43 He said, good. Alright. I counsel a lot of people and the old joke about counseling is when you go to a counselor, the first question they ask is, how do feel about your mother? Right? How do you feel about your mother?
43:05 No pressure, ladies. I think of another, a buddy of mine that when he would hear somebody cuss, he always said it. He'd they'd curse or cuss or swear, whatever you want to call it and he'd go, you kiss your mama with that mouth? Like there was something filthy dirty and you know your mama wouldn't approve. That guy's mother passed away when he was in the ninth grade.
43:30 He wore a white flower. Right? I don't think that they're just too white or red flower. I think that there are those of us who are very thankful for our mother recognizing everyone's human limitations though. Some of us didn't have a good experience with our mom.
43:49 I did. I did. But that doesn't mean that y'all did. And so how do I honor my mother? I I lift up her name and always call her blessed.
44:03 She is blessed and loving and caring. But how do you honor your mother when she was just not really all that interested or really all that good with you? How do you honor that? Forgive her. Forgive her for crying out loud.
44:21 Mama tried. Okay? Forgive her. If you are a Christian, what you need to do is forgive her. I remember coming to an invitation several years back and I was saying, I don't know what it is if you need to accept Jesus into your heart today or if you need to forgive your mama and I didn't have anybody walk the aisle to receive salvation or join the church but I did have three people that week that came in and said, can you tell me how to forgive my mama?
44:47 I can. I can tell you that and I can help you get through it. So if you think my mom was great, praise God, honor her, call her today, send her flowers, be nice, sweet, tell other people, you know. If you had a great mama and you feel like that you're, you know, with God's help and guidance that you are doing the best you can, you're trying right now, you can help somebody who didn't have a good experience with mama. If we will share one another's burdens actually, I think the next one is the one anothering.
45:22 It's right in the middle of that God and other people the golden rule obviously is kind of summation of that too but that honor your father, mother being right in the middle. It's a good place to get used to the concept of bearing with one another and when there's mercy and when there's grace, it's a good social experiment for how the world will be. It's much more loving than the world will be in most or many cases, but it's not always the way it is. And some of us are kind of in bondage because of our fear of retribution and our fear and our relationships that did not provide what we needed as we were little. So, I'll get back to it again.
46:06 What do you do when that's the case? Start with forgiving. Start with forgiving. It is the very center point of all the whole Christian message is the love of God made available through the sacrifice of God, sacrificing his son, sacrificing his son. He's made available the forgiveness and one of the one another command.
46:29 It's bearing with one another. I've got a list of em. Y'all know em but be at peace with one another. Don't grumble among one another. Be of the same mind with one another.
46:47 Accept one another. Wait for one another when you're doing communion. It says, wait for one. I'm going read them all. Do not bite, devour, or consume one another.
46:59 Seriously. Don't boastfully challenge or envy one another. Gently, patiently tolerate one another. Be kind, tender hearted, forgiving one another. Bear with and forgive one another.
47:16 Seek good for one another. Don't repay evil for evil. If you feel like my mom was just evil. Don't repay that evil for evil. Forgive her.
47:26 Give her a clean slate, completely clean slate, and then start over. I know. I'm looking around the room. I know a lot of y'all and you're thinking, my mama's great. Wonderful.
47:37 Love her. Enjoy her. Share her with other people. Confess your sins to one another. If you've been holding on to anger, bitterness, or resentment against anyone, confess that and get it out.
47:54 And then, work on forgiving and reconciling, okay? Every relationship probably does not need to be reconciled. There is a place where there's a sharp disagreement. You have to just go separate ways but you can forgive someone unilaterally. Do you believe that?
48:09 You can forgive someone unilaterally. You can do it on your side. As much as it depends on you, live at peace with all. Don't complain against one another. Seek good for one another.
48:23 Confess sins to one another. Love one another, mention one, two, three, four, five, six, seven, eight, nine, ten, eleven, twelve, thirteen, fourteen, 15. I don't know all about the end times, eschatology. I don't understand it all, and I don't know it all, but I knew know that love one another 11 times in the New Testament is easy to understand. It's hard to do but it starts with forgiveness.
48:51 Through love, serve one another, Tolerate one another in love. Greet one another with a kiss of love. I want to check before you do that. Make sure they're expecting that one, alright? Give preference to one another.
49:06 Regard one another as more important than yourself. Serve one another. Wash one another's feet. Don't be haughty. Be of the same mind.
49:13 Be subject to one another. Close yourselves in humility towards one another. Do not judge one another and don't put a stumbling block in another's way. So, how are we supposed to forgive? Just as God in Christ has forgiven you.
49:33 Who made the first step in that arrangement? God did. Who made the sacrifice in that step? God did. How are we supposed to be forgiving one another?
49:41 Taking the first step. Going forward. Leaning in. That that kiss is coming up again. Greet one another with a holy kiss three times.
49:56 Bear one another's burdens. Speak the truth to one another. Don't lie to one another. Comfort one another. Concerning the resurrection.
50:06 There is better stuff coming. Encourage and build one another up. Stimulate one another unto or stir one another up towards love and good deeds. Pray for one another. Be hospitable to one another I think that's a good idea of how we should go forward with our mothers If we're seeking to honor them let's seek to live out the life that Christ has given to us.
50:40 Now, if you are a mama, most of this has been, all of us have a mama. So, all of us been to all of us but if you are a mama right now and you're feeling like, I didn't. I hadn't done a very good job. I... You got the hardest job in the world.
50:52 Tanya left on Thursday to go to Guatemala. Good grief. Are you with me? I'm not Pascal's mama. I'm Pascal's daddy.
51:01 Pascal's mama does a whole lot of stuff that I had not anticipated. I had an extra thing of mascara in my pocket yesterday all day long because she was dancing at the dancers workshop. It's not an easy job. I think that we need to give a little more grace and a little more leeway to our mamas. But if you're a mama, give yourself a break too.
51:22 You know, y'all have a toughest job in the world and seeing that that's the very first commandment. God recognizes that fact. He gives grace and he gives mercy and he gives love to get it through. You can love your kids because he's first loved you. Are you with me?
51:38 I think that that's all. I don't think there's another slide up there. I I love y'all and I appreciate you tolerating this ridiculous mess. Carl, come on up. Thank you.
51:57 Rescue me here. My heart is thumping out of my chest this morning. What are we singing next? Yeah. Seriously, if you...
52:14 If you're struggling with how you might forgive anyone, please, please, please. My... I said mercy, but I think peacemaking is probably my strongest trait. So if you are trying to make peace with anyone, if forgiveness is gonna have to happen in order for y'all to restore a relationship. If y'all will come to me, please.
52:32 If it's forgiveness from God you're seeking or forgiveness from someone else, or if you think you deserve forgiveness from them. Does that make sense? If you wanna get through the process, would you just come talk to me and let's... Give us a chance to kinda put the relationship back together if possible. In Jesus' name.
52:48 Alright.
52:49 Let's sing. Amen. Let's sing together. We'll stand together. No.
52:53 Not mama tried, although it's really good. And I I would like to hear you sing it again.
52:57 We're gonna sing Christ be all around me.
53:33 And be my side. As I wait, heart of God, satisfy and sustain. As I hear voice of God. Lead me on. Be my God.
54:13 Be my God. Above and loath me before and behind me. In every eye that sees me, grasp me all around me above humble and loamy before and behind me. In every yacht sees me, grasp me all around me, above and below me, before and behind me. And every eye that sees me, you're gonna be me.
55:59 Your death, your blood was shed for every moment. Every moment above and below me, Before and behind me in Dariena sees me. I spiel around me above and loam me.
56:46 Colossians, little commercial for tomorrow night. Be obedient to your parents in all things. For this is well pleasing to the Lord. Lord, would you use us this week? Would you convict our hearts in the places they need to be convicted but you would you also convince us lord of your righteousness shown to us whether it was because of our mom or through our moms or in spite of our moms, would you show us lord that you have used them in our lives to bring us, to be the people you have today to do with it as we will and go forward.
57:16 In Jesus name, we ask for your blessing. Amen.
