Titus 2:11-15

recapped as the passage immediately preceding the main text, covering grace bringing salvation and being zealous for good works

11 For the grace of God has appeared, bringing salvation to all men,

12 instructing us to the intent that, denying ungodliness and worldly lusts, we would live soberly, righteously, and godly in this present age;

13 looking for the blessed hope and appearing of the glory of our great God and Savior, Jesus Christ;

14 who gave himself for us, that he might redeem us from all iniquity, and purify for himself a people for his own possession, zealous for good works.

15 Say these things and exhort and reprove with all authority. Let no man despise you.

Titus 3:1-11

the main sermon text covering submission to authorities, former sinful nature, God's mercy and regeneration, and avoiding foolish controversies

1 Remind them to be in subjection to rulers and to authorities, to be obedient, to be ready for every good work,

2 to speak evil of no one, not to be contentious, to be gentle, showing all humility toward all men.

3 For we were also once foolish, disobedient, deceived, serving various lusts and pleasures, living in malice and envy, hateful, and hating one another.

4 But when the kindness of God our Savior and his love toward mankind appeared,

5 not by works of righteousness which we did ourselves, but according to his mercy, he saved us through the washing of regeneration and renewing by the Holy Spirit,

6 whom he poured out on us richly, through Jesus Christ our Savior;

7 that being justified by his grace, we might be made heirs according to the hope of eternal life.

8 This saying is faithful, and concerning these things I desire that you affirm confidently, so that those who have believed God may be careful to maintain good works. These things are good and profitable to men;

9 but shun foolish questionings, genealogies, strife, and disputes about the law; for they are unprofitable and vain.

10 Avoid a factious man after a first and second warning,

11 knowing that such a one is perverted and sins, being self-condemned.

1 Corinthians 1:18-19

cited to explain that the message of the cross is foolishness to those perishing but the power of God to those being saved

18 For the word of the cross is foolishness to those who are dying, but to us who are saved it is the power of God.

19 For it is written, “I will destroy the wisdom of the wise, I will bring the discernment of the discerning to nothing.”

1 Peter 1

mentioned briefly in connection with the word hope as an incorruptible certainty, and noted as the next book in the study

1 Peter, an apostle of Jesus Christ, to the chosen ones who are living as foreigners in the Dispersion in Pontus, Galatia, Cappadocia, Asia, and Bithynia,

2 according to the foreknowledge of God the Father, in sanctification of the Spirit, that you may obey Jesus Christ and be sprinkled with his blood: Grace to you and peace be multiplied.

3 Blessed be the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, who according to his great mercy caused us to be born again to a living hope through the resurrection of Jesus Christ from the dead,

4 to an incorruptible and undefiled inheritance that doesn’t fade away, reserved in Heaven for you,

5 who by the power of God are guarded through faith for a salvation ready to be revealed in the last time.

6 Wherein you greatly rejoice, though now for a little while, if need be, you have been put to grief in various trials,

7 that the proof of your faith, which is more precious than gold that perishes even though it is tested by fire, may be found to result in praise, glory, and honor at the revelation of Jesus Christ—

8 whom not having known you love; in whom, though now you don’t see him, yet believing, you rejoice greatly with joy unspeakable and full of glory—

9 receiving the result of your faith, the salvation of your souls.

10 Concerning this salvation, the prophets sought and searched diligently, who prophesied of the grace that would come to you,

11 searching for who or what kind of time the Spirit of Christ, which was in them, pointed to, when he predicted the sufferings of Christ, and the glories that would follow them.

12 To them it was revealed, that not to themselves, but to you, they ministered these things, which now have been announced to you through those who preached the Good News to you by the Holy Spirit sent out from heaven; which things angels desire to look into.

13 Therefore prepare your minds for action, be sober, and set your hope fully on the grace that will be brought to you at the revelation of Jesus Christ—

14 as children of obedience, not conforming yourselves according to your former lusts as in your ignorance,

15 but just as he who called you is holy, you yourselves also be holy in all of your behavior;

16 because it is written, “You shall be holy; for I am holy.”

17 If you call on him as Father, who without respect of persons judges according to each man’s work, pass the time of your living as foreigners here in reverent fear:

18 knowing that you were redeemed, not with corruptible things, with silver or gold, from the useless way of life handed down from your fathers,

19 but with precious blood, as of a lamb without blemish or spot, the blood of Christ;

20 who was foreknown indeed before the foundation of the world, but was revealed in this last age for your sake,

21 who through him are believers in God, who raised him from the dead, and gave him glory; so that your faith and hope might be in God.

22 Seeing you have purified your souls in your obedience to the truth through the Spirit in sincere brotherly affection, love one another from the heart fervently:

23 having been born again, not of corruptible seed, but of incorruptible, through the word of God, which lives and remains forever.

24 For, “All flesh is like grass, and all of man’s glory like the flower in the grass. The grass withers, and its flower falls;

25 but the Lord’s word endures forever.” This is the word of Good News which was preached to you.

Recap

The message in order, in a few minutes of reading.

This sermon worked through Titus 3:1-11, with Pastor James showing how an honest look at what we once were, and what God did about it, shapes the way Christians treat everyone around them. The mercy and grace that saved us are the reason we speak well of others, avoid quarrels, and do good works for all people, not just for other believers.

What was said

Paul's instructions to Titus begin with a list of practical, outward behaviors: be submissive to governing authorities, be ready for every good work, speak evil of no one, avoid quarreling, be gentle, and show perfect courtesy toward all people. These are not abstract virtues but a concrete description of how the church on Crete was supposed to look from the outside.

The reason Paul gives for all of that is a backward look at what Christians once were. Foolish, disobedient, led astray, enslaved to passions, passing their days in malice and envy, hated by others and hating one another. Pastor James pressed on this: if you can hold on to knowing that you were once that person, it becomes very difficult to get high and mighty about your current standing before God.

What changed everything was not anything the believers did. When the goodness and loving kindness of God appeared, He saved them. Not because of works done in righteousness, but according to His own mercy. The distinction between grace and mercy came up here: grace is receiving something good you do not deserve, mercy is not receiving the punishment you do deserve. Both are in play, and neither has anything to do with human effort.

The instrument of that salvation is the washing of regeneration and renewal of the Holy Spirit, poured out richly through Jesus Christ. The thief on the cross was the illustration: a man who had been reviling Jesus minutes earlier said "remember me when you come into your kingdom," and was told he would be in paradise that very day. No ritual, no accumulated merit, just a response to the Holy Spirit.

The result of all this is that believers become heirs according to the hope of eternal life. Pastor James took time to explain that the Greek word translated "hope" here carries no uncertainty. It is not a wish that might not come true. It is an expectation of something certain, an incorruptible inheritance that is going to happen.

Because that foundation is grace and mercy rather than works, Paul tells Titus to insist on it and to point believers toward the good works that flow from it. Those good works are for all people, not only for other Christians. God fills people who look to Him, and then they spill out into the lives of people who are not yet looking at all.

The closing section of the passage carries a warning: avoid foolish controversies, genealogies, and quarrels about the law, because they are unprofitable and worthless. Pastor James connected this to the long history of Christian division, noting that Jesus prayed in the garden that His followers would be one. A person who insists on stirring up division, after being warned once and then twice, is to be left alone. The practical alternative is the line Paul offers: so far as it depends on you, live peaceably with all.

Doing a Bible study?

Here is a guide we have prepared for you: the passages in order, questions for the group, and room to write.

  1. Pastor Nathan pointed to the list in Titus 3 of what believers once were: foolish, disobedient, led astray, slaves to various passions, passing their days in malice and envy. How does keeping that picture of your 'before' in mind change the way you treat people who are not yet where you are?
  2. The sermon drew a sharp line between grace and mercy: grace is getting good you do not deserve, mercy is not getting the bad you do deserve. Which of those two truths do you find yourself needing to hold onto more right now, and why?

If you'd like to be one of those, if you felt the kind of a motivation lately that I ought to do that. We ought to start having a little group that meets and walks through the Bible together.
3:29 We have a lot of these that are already going on but we'd like to have more of em. Maybe even regionally. So, we're considering how to, like I said, plant this, fertilize this, get thing going. We we don't want for it to be other than organic but at the same time, we do just want to encourage it, urge it on. So, we're looking for Bible study leaders.
3:47 If you let me know, I'll put you in contact with Nick Staren and that would be good. Also, his Email address is right there. Assistant@FirstBJackson.org. 5:51 But to music? I say that like this. It actually should be really, really good. Everybody still remembers when Matt spoke and he talked about his dogs and how the way that the dogs respond. And I think that this is gonna be in that vein.
6:08 It's supposed to be just a transformational experience. So, if you can go, a horse whispering demonstration with live music, August 19 at 05:30 up at the Diamond Cross. Right now media, I'm going to mention it again. If you have not signed up for Right Now it's like the Christian version of Netflix. Tons and tons of Bible studies are on there.
6:26 If you will let either Nick in the office know or if you'll let me know, there's Nick right there. Yeah. Nick in the sanctuary. That's him right there. If you will let him know, he will get you signed up.
6:36 It's like the Christian version of Netflix but it doesn't cost you anything. So, it's great. Thousands and thousands of Bible studies are available and I think that's all the announcements. If I forgotten something, it should be printed in the bulletin and you can grab one on your way out if you didn't get one on the way in. How are you this morning?
6:52 You alright? Alright. It's been a busy busy week for a lot of us and a late night for a lot of us too. Would you stand up and just greet one another and we'll bring you back together with a song.
7:39 Speaker 2He takes place and stands in front of God all night. He speaks on our behalf since we don't have the right. He flees before the God who judges ox of man. I'm here to serve the sentence for our sin, and there is. There Alright.
8:35 He found the captives. He found the captives, broke the bondage of our chains. We have redemption through the price that he has paid. He gave his life to purchase freedom from the fall. Our mediator was the ransom for us all.
9:47 Way to salvation.
10:04 Speaker 3You know where that comes from? That comes right out of second, sorry. First Timothy, two five. It says, for there is one God and one mediator between God and mankind, the man Jesus Christ. Here's another verse I wanna share.
10:20 It's from Galatians. And it says, for you are all children of God through faith in Christ Jesus. Through faith. We didn't earn anything. We didn't deserve anything.
10:34 Through faith in Jesus Christ, we become his children. Coheirs with Christ. That's really good news.
12:39 Speaker 2Right through it. My fears are drowning perfect love. You rescued me so I could stand 'm a child
13:52 Speaker 3Let's pray together. God, I thank you for this new identity that we have in you. Forgive us, God, when we look for our identity in other things and places and created things rather than you, our creator. But thank you, God, for a new identity for receiving us as as children, for gathering us together as children, and this happens through faith. Thank you, God, for your Holy Spirit that makes us alive in you that we spiritually become awake.
14:23 I thank you, God, for calling us and drawing us to yourself. I thank you, God, then for all the benefits that come with it. Specifically, I always think of peace. I thank you for peace, that transcends understanding. I thank you for the comfort that you provide us.
14:44 I thank you for the family of God that we get to be a part of, that we share everything in common because we share you, Jesus, in common. And, God, thank you for living that perfect life for us, and thank you for going to the cross for us. Man of sorrows, acquainted with grief, You did that for us out of love. In Jesus' name. Amen.
19:54 You can have a seat, and I'd like to invite the frontline team to come forward here as we participate in the worship through giving. And as they come forward, I would love to I'd love to pray. God, I thank you for your risen life. That's a theme in the songs that we've been singing that if there was no resurrection, we don't need to be here. But because you did rise, we have life, victorious life in you.
20:21 We don't need to be shackled by fear or worry, but we have a peace that transcends understanding in you. God, I pray for more of that. I pray that in all circumstances in all circumstances, whether we are doing fantastic and things have never been better, we are at the lowest of the low. As we turn to you, Lord, I pray that you would fill us up and give us more of yourself. You really are our hope and our salvation.
20:55 Thank you for every gift that you give us. Would you help us to be generous with what you give? That really is where we find a lot of joy. We find joy and generosity and sharing because that's exactly what you have done for us. You shared your life to the point that you would give your life for us only to raise it up again.
21:21 Would you help us to follow your example? We need you. We thank you, and it's in Jesus' name.
24:07 Speaker 2I
24:14 Speaker 3words more than good
24:19 Speaker 2found your love in the open field. More than words, more than good ideas. I found your steady. Let's sing that again. From the hand to the heart, it take me on a journey.
24:58 Let it go, get it all steady. There's no,
25:44 Speaker 1We're up to Titus three. If y'all were at the fair last week, we skipped off course from Titus. We're in a chronological Bible study, a New Testament in order that it was written and we've been in it for five and a half years, something like that. It's been a long time. We're up to Titus three.
26:02 It's about sixty four AD when Paul is writing this and he's writing it to a person. He's writing it to a guy named Titus and Titus is the fellow that he has left in charge on the island of Crete and he's left in charge of establishing elders in all of the little churches and establishing kind of order in a way of all of the churches so that they're not just all wandering off course, not knowing. So, Titus three one through 11 is where we are in the text and I'm going to ramp up to this because since we did get off of this last week, I want to refresh your memory from when we were here a couple weeks ago, there was a big emphasis in the sermon and in this passage before this one about teaching. For the grace of God has appeared bringing salvation for all people. Does it say that it's bringing salvation to all people and that all will be saved?
26:57 It does not say that. Universalism is a convenient heresy that all roads lead to heaven but this says that salvation is available for all people. For the grace of God has appeared. Grace be in the unmerited favor of God has appeared bringing salvation for all people. Training us, that's teaching, right?
27:18 Training us to renounce ungodliness and worldly passions to live self controlled, upright, and godly lives in the present age. Waiting for our blessed hope. I'll explain hope a little later on in the sermon but waiting for our blessed hope, the appearing of the glory of our great God and savior Jesus Christ who gave himself for us to redeem us from all lawlessness and to purify for himself, a people, for his own possession, who are zealous for good works. Declare these things. He's saying, say this in the public assembly of believers.
27:50 Say this, declare these things, exhort, and rebuke with all authority. So, that was our ramping up to this passage. Sorry, let no one disregard you. Declare these things exhort and rebuke with all authority and let no one disregard you and then we start our passage for this week. Remind them.
28:09 The chapter titles are not inspired, okay? The chapter little numbers because this is a flow of thought. It says, declare these things exhort and rebuke with all authority. Let no one disregard you. Remind them to be submissive to rulers and authorities.
28:26 Outright and open rebellion against the authorities would not go well for Christianity. Does that make sense? The Roman government had a very very strong hand for any outright rebellion, sedition, treason, anything like that and remind them to be submissive to the rulers and the authorities. Remind them to be obedient, to be ready for every good work. Does that sound like anything that we just read?
28:52 Yes. Christ is calling out for himself a people for his own possession who are zealous for good works. God wants to see good works happen and he wants to use his obedient servants to do those good works. Remind them to be submissive to rulers and authorities to be obedient and to be ready for every good work. To speak evil of no one.
29:16 It's starting to define this now. To speak evil of no one. Let's think just for a moment since we met last. Have you heard anybody speak evil of anybody else? Is it just my position where I hear it or is it just the normal course of human endeavor that people speak evil against other people?
29:38 Partially, I think because it makes us feel better about ourselves if we put someone else down. He starts the list right here. Be ready for every good work to speak evil of no one. To avoid quarreling. There are quarrels out there.
29:57 Avoid them. Avoid quarreling. You don't have to go to every fight that you're invited to. Okay? Be gentle.
30:09 Actually, one good way of avoiding quarreling is being gentle. Gentleness has a way of softening the situation. A soft answer turns away wrath. Be gentle. These are instructions for Titus to be sure to share with the believers on Crete.
30:27 To be gentle. And to show perfect courtesy toward all people. It doesn't say show perfect courtesy toward all people within your specific branch or denomination of Christianity. To show perfect courtesy toward all people. We're created in the image of God.
30:46 We bear God's image. As image bearers, treat everyone, everyone well. Show perfect courtesy toward all people. That's the way he starts off in here in chapter three. Why?
31:01 Then he answers it. I like to only ask you why when I know that Paul answers it right after that, okay? Why? For we ourselves once were foolish. Can I get a witness?
31:13 We ourselves once were foolish. We were disobedient. Again, anybody can attest to that? Yeah. I knew the way from very early on that I always walk in it.
31:27 Led astray listening to voices, convenient voices sometimes but being led off of the path, led astray. We once were foolish and disobedient. We once were led astray and we once were slaves to various passions and pleasures. There's a way that seems right to a man but in the end, it's the path of destruction. We were once.
31:56 He's he's pointing backwards. We all once were and if you hold on to the fact that you do not deserve the current status of salvation that you have. The current position in Christ that you have. If you don't start to think that I deserve this in some way, if you can hold on to knowing that we once were foolish and disobedient, led astray, and slaves to various passions and but for the grace of God, literally go high. If you can hold on to that, it'll help.
32:23 Passing our days in malice and envy. Malice is when you have I think it probably starts from hatred in your heart but malice is when you wish ill on someone instead of wishing for someone's good. Love is hoping for the best good for the other and malice is the opposite of that. It's wishing them bad and envy. A lot of times when we have malice, it's because we're jealous and that's not just the second, third, fourth grade thing that your mama said.
32:54 They're just jealous. It probably was true in the second, third, fourth grade too. Passing our days in malice and envy, when we look around and see people that have more or different or better stuff, ideas, lives, whatever. Oh my goodness, the Facebook. Every happy picture of everybody can draw you into thinking, wow, those people are living such a great life and I'm not living that life.
33:20 I hate those people. Malice and envy. Passing our days in malice and envy. Hated by others and hating one another. He's not saying that's the current state for the Christians on creed.
33:35 He's saying, this is the way that you were. If Christ has set you free, if you're no longer a slave to fear like we just saying, if you're no longer a slave, then, don't live like that. Don't live with hatred in your heart and hating one another. Don't divide but oh my goodness, I love an extra large adversity of conjunction. Cannot lie.
33:57 I love bud. This but it's like right there but when the goodness and loving kindness of God, our savior appeared, he saved us. That takes it completely off of us, right? It's for by the grace we were saved. Grace of God, his unmerited favor.
34:15 By grace, we were saved. Through faith, we do have to exercise our faith. He's given us all a measure of faith and we can put that trust in whatever we see as true. He's urging us to put that faith that he has given in him. When the goodness and the loving kindness of God, our savior appeared, it might have been before that that you didn't see it, you'd never seen it before, you didn't know about the goodness and the grace and the loving kindness of God but when the goodness and the loving kindness of God our savior appeared, he saved us.
34:51 Not because of works done by us in righteousness because we really have no righteousness of our own. I was talking to somebody this week. I think it was Mike, the youth guy, Mike, Demetrius. He said, so often we lift up and go, look what I did, God. He goes, yeah, filthy rags.
35:12 No, but they're great filthy rags, aren't they? I did this. In a way, God sees that and says, yeah. Yeah. But the most fantastic thing that we could do of our own for him is filthy rags.
35:28 Now, are we able to do work where God works through us and we do good works? All over this passage, it says that we can but motivated by our own self, we cannot. Are you with me? You understand? Not because of works done by us in righteousness.
35:45 Did he save us? He saved us when his loving kindness and goodness appeared. It is according to his own mercy. What is mercy? So, I've been saying grace.
35:54 Grace is unmerited favor. It is getting something good that you do not deserve. That's grace. Mercy is not getting something bad that you do deserve. It is by God's mercy.
36:07 All of us have sinned. All of us has fallen short of the glory of God and because of that, we all deserve separation from God. We all deserve it. According to God's mercy, he saved us, not because we deserved it. If we keep that in mind, we don't get high and mighty.
36:28 We don't put other people down. We don't go through the whole malice and envy and being led astray and foolish and disobedient. We don't do that if we recognize it's by God's grace that he is offered something good that we didn't deserve. An incorruptible hope in heaven. An abundant life here By his mercy, we don't get the punishment we do deserve According to his own mercy and by the washing and regeneration and the renewal of the Holy Spirit.
37:01 Amen. It is by God's grace that Christ came and lived a perfect life. We're going to celebrate communion here together in a little bit. It is by God's grace that Christ came sacrificially, lived out a perfect life with no sin debt to pay. He voluntarily gave that life on the cross at Calvary for anyone who would put the measure of faith that God had given them in him.
37:28 For anyone that believes in him, the moment you believe, remember the thief on the cross? It says that there were two thieves. They were on either side of him being crucified at the same time and when it it says that they were being nailed, he was being nailed, they were being tied to the cross. The thieves both were reviling him and as they stood the cross up, Jesus saying, father, forgive them for they know not what they do. As they stand the cross up, one of the thieves who had just been reviling him said, remember me when you come into your kingdom and Jesus said, today, right now, that's the moment, today, you'll be with me in paradise.
38:11 This is it. That's that's the good news. It's the washing and regeneration and renewal of the Holy Spirit. Are there any rights that must happen? Do you have to be baptized?
38:20 Do you have to be immersion baptized? Do you have to be, does everything have to be just so or do you just have to respond to the Holy Spirit? Ask and receive. Regeneration and renewal of the Holy Spirit. By the washing and the regeneration and renewal of the Holy Spirit, whom he poured out on us richly, that is whom the Holy Spirit, whom God poured out on us richly through Jesus Christ our savior.
38:51 It is through Christ and his sacrificial death. That's the message of the cross. I know it sounds like foolishness. According to first Corinthians one eighteen and nineteen, it is foolishness to those who are perishing but it is the power of God to those who are being saved. He poured out on us richly through Jesus Christ, our savior.
39:14 So that. I love a good so that. So that being justified by his grace, we might become heirs according to the hope of eternal life. Now, hope there, I told you I was going to explain it a little further. Hope in the Bible, this is the word for Ephes.
39:28 Ephes from elpo means to anticipate or welcome. It is looking forward to something and we might all say, well, I hope something happens but there's a degree of it might not happen in English when we say hope. There is no degree of it might happen in the Greek use of this word. It is going to happen properly. It is an expectation of that which is sure.
39:50 An incorruptible hope, Peter says, we're going to first Peter next by the way. We finish here. Properly, it's an expectation of that which is sure or certain. Help us. So, the hope of eternal life.
40:05 Oh, the pain of the finality of death on earth. There is no denying how hard it is. When you love someone, when you barely know someone, and they just no longer are here. It is almost unbearable for us to deal with. But this hope that we have, which is a certainty of eternal life.
40:26 So, that being justified by his grace, we might become heirs. Now, the might in there dramatically leaves it open. It's contingent upon how you respond to the gospel. It's good news. It's good news that you can respond to but not everyone will.
40:51 When we go through hard times in life and when things happen Those are some of the times where it is the most apparent that God is saying, trust me. And it's the most difficult time to do it so that being justified by his grace, that unmerited favor that he's offering and his mercy, we might become heirs with Jesus. Carl said this morning, join heirs with Jesus, co heirs. According to the hope of eternal life. Now, the saying is trustworthy and I want you to insist on these things.
41:30 He said, teach, teach, teach, teach, declare, encourage, or exhort, and rebuke and now he's saying, insist on this. Don't let this get out of whack. If you let this get out of whack where it becomes about our works, where it becomes about what we deserve because of what we have done for him, then, you've got it all wrong. Insist on the fact that it is by belief and placing your faith in Christ. Insist on this.
41:58 Teach. Sound doctrine. Teach. Be a model. Teach.
42:03 Exhort. Rebuke. Insist on these things. So that those who have believed God. This is speaking for Christians in particular right here.
42:12 So that those who have believed in God may be careful to devote themselves to good works and it's good works for all people. They don't have to just be Christians, okay? Do you understand what I'm saying? It is our job once we know Jesus. To just be walking in the good works that he has established ahead of time for us.
42:35 So that those who have believed in God may be careful to devote themselves to good works. These things are excellent and profitable for people, for all people. That's a wonderful way that God is communicating his love. He pours into individuals who look to him and then he spills out of those individuals into lives of people who don't really care or not yet. These things are excellent and profitable for people.
42:59 Now, that sounds really positive. I could end right there. We go right into communion. Everything's great. There are about couple more sentences here and they are somewhat negative, alright?
43:08 But I think that if you listen to em, you'll see that this is our experience. It's exactly our experience and when Paul writes, he's writing to people in real time, in real space, and people are the ones who are understanding this. So, he goes in verse nine and says, but avoid foolish controversies. Avoid them. Foolish controversies.
43:27 He already said, avoid quarreling. He says, we once were foolish. Now, he's saying, avoid foolish controversies. It is really easy to fall into picking a side because that's the way we're built. I remember going to one of the churches we used to play against in church softball when I was a little kid.
43:46 I was surprised they were preaching the gospel. I had set them up to be so foreign from us. West End Baptist Church, I was like, really? And so then when I figured out that they actually really had the same gospel we did, I thought, wow, that's wonderful. Then, I went to a Methodist Church and I was like, oh my goodness, they're preaching Jesus too.
44:08 I think we need to avoid the foolish controversies, people. If Jesus prayed in the garden before his arrest, he's praying his high priestly prayer and he says, Lord God, make them one just like we are one and we divide and divide and divide and divide. We even call it denominations. We denominate. We we move away from nominate the one name.
44:34 We denominate and we separate ourselves. I think that's horrible. Avoid foolish controversies, genealogies, dissensions. Dissensions is anything that divides, right? Dissensions and quarrels about the law.
44:49 For they're unprofitable and worthless. How many unprofitable and worthless conversations have you had this week? As for a person who stirs up division, this one's hard for me. I'm a mercy guy. As for a person who stirs up division, after warning him once and then twice, have nothing more to do with it.
45:10 Well, that's where we get denominations from. He's wrong. I'm gonna go over here. I think if if if we were to have a soft heart, all of us, then we wouldn't have a reason to divide. If we all very humbly thought, you know what?
45:28 I believe this to be true based on what I see right here. But I might be wrong. I might be wrong. I believe what this says. I don't understand it completely and perfectly all of the time but I trust in the one who sent me this love letter.
45:46 I trust in him and I'm looking to him. I don't insist on having my own way. The passage you read yesterday at the wedding. Love does not insist on having its own way. Christ knew that his way was the way, that he was the way, the truth, and the life, and he knew it but he did not force anyone's hand to accept that.
46:05 He made the offer. The grace of God is available. The mercy of God is available. Now, it's up to you to place your faith where you will. As for a person who stirs up division after warning him once and then twice have nothing more to do with him.
46:18 Knowing that such a person is warped and sinful and he is self condemned. I love communion. I love this time not because it is one of our like an institution of the church. It's it's not because it's that. It's because to me, every time that we do this, I think, from all the various backgrounds that we come in, this room from, we are called out of and into, out of the world, out of every tribe, tongue, and nation.
46:43 We're called into one family and this is a representation of being called into the family of God. It is by Jesus's work, not by our work. It is his perfect life and his shed blood that have made the way for us to be a part of the family of God. So, we're going to go to that in just a second. I don't want to end on that negativity.
47:08 So go back to this. If possible, so far as it depends on you, live peaceably with all. Okay? Because you can't control the one issue voter that just has this one particular thing that they are going to insist on being right about and you're wrong. Once, twice, and then don't engage with that kind of argument, okay?
47:32 Engage all over in the ways that you agree and build up. Seek the things that make for peace. But man, it's hard. If possible, so far as it depends on you, live peaceably with all. So, though it may be a little negative, there's a lot of positive in being able to walk that way because you can waste a whole lot of time trying to turn, turn, turn but the way you live your life makes more difference.
47:56 More than words, more than good ideas, right? More than words, more than good ideas. The way that you live your life, peace. So, Imma leave you with this and I'll invite the elders forward to come up and distribute the bread for communion. Imma leave you with this.
48:10 The meat of this passage is right in the center. I put it all on one slide. Titus three five through seven says this, he saved us not because of works done by us in righteousness but according to his own mercy, by the washing of regeneration and renewal of the Holy Spirit, whom he poured out on us richly through Jesus Christ, our savior, so that being justified by his grace. So, do you see how that's Christ work and the Holy Spirit's work? By his grace, we might become heirs according to the hope of eternal life and that hope of eternal life is a certainty.
48:43 There is no doubt. That is going to come to pass. Alright, would the elders come forward? Would you play something pretty? The Bible says that on the evening that Jesus was betrayed, he called his disciples together and John gives us whole four whole chapters of what happened on that evening and the instruction that he gave.
49:14 I like one of the phrases that he gave to his disciples. He said, there's much more that I'd like to share with you but you can't bear it right now. I like that. Four full chapters of John and then he kind of closes with that. There's more I want to share with you but he is continuing to show and reveal himself through the comforter, the Holy Spirit.
49:33 He told him about that night. We practice an open table here. So, an open table of communion means that if you believe in Jesus, you are welcome to take communion. You don't have to be of a specific denomination and it maybe a stretch for some of you. Some of y'all know that you're from a church that has a closed table and you're so used to seeing it closed.
49:54 Jesus said as often as you will, do this in remembrance of me. So, as often as you will, I'll leave it with you to decide whether you will or you won't. If you believe in Jesus, I urge you to accept this. If you don't, then just let it pass. We pray a blessing on you.
50:10 As you let it pass, you know where you stand, you know what you believe. No one else can tell you but whether you've known for eighty years or whether you just decided during the middle of that sermon to put your faith in Jesus. This is an open table and you're welcome to take me. In Jesus name, lord, is the way that we come together. It's the only name.
50:30 As Paul as Carl said, there's one mediator and he was it. Jesus, thank you for your perfect life and your shed blood. We ask your blessing God on this little representation of that life. Amen. The way that you have made this offer for everyone that accepts it, lord.
54:38 Hope means certainty. Lord, in Jesus name, we come thanking you for the perfect life lived and for the sacrificial death where he paid the debt for our sins. Ask that you'd bless this cup as we distribute this little plastic glass of grape juice, lord. It's a representation of Christ's blood, the sacrifice made on behalf of all of those who put their faith in him. In Jesus name, amen.
59:13 In the same manner that he had taken the bread, he also took the cup and he spoke to his disciples there and he speaks to his disciples here this morning and said, this is the new covenant. This is not a covenant of works. This is not a covenant of sacrifice after sacrifice after sacrifice. This is the new covenant in my blood once for all. Take this and drink and do it as often as you will in remembrance of me.
59:46 And then Paul says that as often as we do that, we proclaim the death of the Lord Jesus Christ to a world that's lost and dying. Now, the resurrection is after that. Absolutely. May we never get far from the cross of Christ. I got one more question for you and then I'll let the people say, amen, I hope.
1:00:14 How long does repentance take? How long does repentance take? The twinkling of an eye. In between the time I just snap my fingers and now, someone could have repented. I want you to hold on to that.
1:00:34 How easy it is but as Billy Graham says, you may never be any closer than you are right now. Would you stand? We're going to sing. Carl's up here. We're to sing all the people said amen.
1:00:55 Speaker 2Alright. Let's sing this together. You are not alone. If you want only you and you feel afraid, you'll not be only. We are all safe in need of mercy to be forgiven and be free.
1:01:19 It's all you got to lean on, but thank God it's all you need. And all the people said, amen. And all the people said, amen. If thanks to the Lord for us, thou never ends. And our people said, amen.
1:01:46 Well, if you're rich or poor, well, it don't matter. Weak or strong, no love is our after. We're all home broken, we're all in this together. God knows we stumble and fall. He so loved the world, he sent his son to save us all.
1:02:13 And our people said amen. And all the people said, amen. Give thanks. Give thanks to the Lord for his love never ends. Are the people hungry for another star.
1:02:49 This is the kingdom, the kingdom of God. And let's sing all. And our people said amen. And all the people all the people said amen
1:03:27 Speaker 1Let's close out with this. The saying is trustworthy and I'm going to insist on it. So that those who have believed in God may be careful to devote themselves to good works. Look for opportunities this week to share your faith by what you do and defend it with what you say. In Jesus name, amen.
1:04:38 Amen.
