Are you gonna go along today? Good morning, everybody. Hey. It's worship time. And while folks are still trickling in from the foyer, we'll kinda gather ourselves, get a smile on our face and a song in our heart.
0:15
Right? We're gonna worship with music this morning. Do I sound like I'm in a tunnel? Kinda feel like I'm in a Come on. Let's stand up and sing worship together and join our hearts.
0:25

0:40
Good to see you. Here we go.
0:43
I have a song that Jesus gave me it was sent from heaven above there never was a sweeter melody tis a melody of love in my heart, there rings a melody. There rings a melody with heaven's harmony. In my heart, there rings a melody. There rings a melody of love. I love the Christ who died on Calvary for he washed my sins away.
1:24
He put within my heart a melody and I know it's there to stay. In my heart, there rings a melody. There rings a melody with heaven's harmony. In my heart, there rings a melody. There rings a melody of love.
1:49
'Twil be my endless theme in glory. With the angels, I will sing. It will be a song with glorious harmony. When the courts of heaven ring, in my heart there rings a melody. There rings a melody with heaven's harmony.
2:14
In my heart, there rings a melody, there rings a melody of love. Alright, keep that melody going in your heart.
2:25
Since Jesus came into my heart. He's got another up tempo song that just kinda unites us this morning. There we go.
2:35
What a wonderful change in my life has been wrought since Jesus came into my heart. The last time, the last long I had sought since Jesus came into my heart. Since Jesus came into my heart. Since Jesus came into my heart. Floods of joy o'er my soul like the sea billows roar.
3:10
Since Jesus came into my heart. I have ceased from my wandering and going astray since Jesus came into my heart. And my sins whence were many are all washed away since Jesus came into my heart since Jesus came into my heart since Jesus came into my heart floods of joy or my soul like the sea billows roll since Jesus came into my heart I shall go there to dwell in that city I know since Jesus came into my heart and I'm happy so happy as onward I go since Jesus came into my heart since Jesus came into my heart since Jesus came into my heart floods of joy or my soul like the sea billows roar since Jesus came into my heart. Okay, you can have a seat.

8:12
Crystal's gonna help me sing. Okay. Here we go. We're gonna get back into singing, so kinda regather yourselves. And let's remind ours.
8:21
This is a great song for reminding ourselves. What Jesus loves will do. He will lift you up. Amen? Here we go.
8:29
I was sinking deep in sin far from the peaceful shore very deeply stained within sinking to rise no more but the master of the sea heard my despairing cry from the waters lifted me now say fam I lifted me love lifted me when nothing else could help love lifted me love lifted me love lifted me when nothing else could help lifted me all my heart to him I give ever to him I'll cling in his blessed presence live ever his praises sing love so mighty and so true merits my souls with songs faithful loving service to to him belonged Love lifted me. 11:05
Y'all sounded pretty strong there. Well done. Thank you. The longer I serve him five twenty in your hymnal, if you wanna see the how the melody goes, I've got some lovely help up here this morning. Thank you for for being willing to sing with us.
11:29
My life he controls since I gave my heart to Jesus the longer I serve him the sweeter he grows the more that I love him the more he bestows each day is like heaven my heart overflows the longer I serve him the sweeter he grows.
13:24
A little newer song for me, so thank you for helping on. Now let's have a seat. What a sweet song though talking about serving. The more you serve him, the the more you learn to fall in love with our Lord. Now we're gonna have our frontline team come forward.
13:38
Bow with me and pray as we ask a blessing for our offering this morning. Gracious heavenly father, thank you for being with us here, to filling us this morning with your spirit, directing our attention to you. Lord God, we thank you and praise you for who you are. We are especially thankful this morning for all that you have given us as we rest this morning in you. We are mindful of the many blessings that you give to us and Lord God, everything that we have is from you and we thank you and praise you for that and we give back this morning a portion of that which you have given and we ask your blessing on it.
14:24
We ask it that you use this offering this morning to extend your kingdom to the ends of the earth. We're mindful of Ray's absence this morning. We pray that he's enjoying his his time with his family and ask you to bless Carl this morning as he will be sharing from your word. Lord God, we we just thank you. We we gather in your name today to bring you honor and glory and will you bless us this morning in Jesus name.
14:53
Amen.
15:04
Laundry Love kind of got started I guess around 2005. Our group had been meeting for probably six, seven months and this Laundry Love idea came up and I said, well, I'm just going to throw it out to our group and see what they think. We kind of talked about this a little bit. He kind of mentioned some things about this thing called laundry love that I'd never heard before. He kind of explained to us what it was all about, know, going out, we're gonna try and find a laundromat that would allow us to come and do laundry for people.
15:28
We said, hey, let's just let's just run with it. You know, this is a great idea. It's a great way to, love on our community, to give some of the blessing that we've received, give that back to the community as well. Basically, the, last Saturday of the month, we show up here. It's mainly our small group, our little community group, and we bring a jar full of quarters anywhere we may spend 50 to $75.
15:49
And we just kinda go through and just pay for laundry for people. No questions asked. You know? No requirement. Show up, and we're gonna pay for your laundry.
15:56
My favorite part is watching the faces on people and you ask me if you can do their laundry and they look at you like, are you nuts? You know, why would you do my laundry? There's always a cash. Here there is no cash. It's we're doing it because we wanna do it.
16:09
We're doing it because we like doing it. We actually we meeting the people. First night we were in here we sat here for thirty forty five minutes before anybody showed up and then all of a sudden the lady came in and she started bringing more and more laundry. We said well we got the money let's just help We had done fifteen, twenty loads of laundry for her. Was talking with all of our group.
16:33
Towards the end of the night, as she's finally finishing her drying and getting things wrapped up, she said, you don't know what a blessing this has been for me. She said, I came in here and I had, I think it was $20 in her wallet. She said, I put up laundry for the whole month just because it's either do laundry or feed my kids. She said, I've been putting off laundry. Here, it's not about me.
16:53
It's it's about the people that walk in here on on a nightly basis on a Saturday night when we when we come and do laundry. Know? All a sudden, you know, I'm, you know, I'm not thinking about my world anymore. You know? What what my problems are.
17:09
It's focused on them. We may have five people in here that we help. We may have every washer and dryer full. Either way, I just come out of here just overjoyed with just being able to help people and show them some compassion and love. When it came to our our small group situation, you know, we're actually practicing what we're either being preached or what we preach.
17:33
In a lot of cases, that's that's that's a rarity. You know? I mean, you can do it once. You can do it twice in in a year. We do it, you know, 12 times a year.
17:42
People in our group have come to realize that we are called to share love and to go out into the world. It's not that we're gonna get together in our holy huddle in our living room and and meet every week. So it's just great that the the people in our community group have, you know, caught that vision as well, that they wanna be out reaching the people and caring for their needs, and that's kind of where Laundry Love came from. Before
18:10
I comment on that, Judy, where is Judy? Thank you. Thank you for that song and that the words were on that song. Yeah. It was wonderful.
18:20
Thank you. You notice one of the men in that small group say, people often ask us, what's what's the catch? What's going on here? And he said, there's no catch. There's no catch.
18:33
We do this because we want to. We do this because we like to. We we love the people. And to me, that sums up the attitude here in Romans 12, particularly verse one where it says, therefore, I urge you brothers and sisters, in view of God's mercy, to offer your bodies as a living sacrifice, holy and pleasing to God. This is your true and proper worship.
18:59
As I study this, I like to put things in my own words. And and in my own words, I would say it this way, because God has been so merciful to us, so merciful. Let's wholeheartedly offer ourselves, our whole being to him because this is a reasonable response for all God has done. So before we go any further, let's pray. Okay?
19:24
God, would you meet us where we're at this morning? I if we're coming in here flustered or distracted, I I pray that you would grab our attention, that you would give us peace, you'd give us ears to listen. You have a heart to understand. I pray that I pray that though these words would they would go from our head and into our heart and out our hands and feet. In Proverbs nine, you say that to fear you is the beginning of wisdom and that the knowledge of you is understanding.
19:59
Lord, would you give us both wisdom and understanding, so we know what to do and how to do it? And, Lord, I pray that it would also be our joy, to truly offer our whole self, our whole being to you as a living sacrifice that's holy, that's set apart for you. And, show us how that's done in Christ's name who lives in us and through us and makes all of this possible in the first place. Amen. So you heard Ray's out of town this this morning.
20:31
By by the way, I have a much deeper appreciation for Ray just taking us through the book of Romans. His preaching is top notch. Would you agree? Can we let him know that, please? It might be on a recording.
20:46
Yes. I'll preface this by saying, again, I I I told him, I'm like third line JV here, Ray. Come on. What's what's happening? But he, he said, yes.
21:00
Go for it. And, I had the privilege of just getting after Romans, and and it it it became new and fresh. And really, it it it filled me up. It filled me up, and I and I pray that it will do that for you as well. Here's the thing.
21:20
I don't know chiastic construction like Ray does. I'm not gonna butcher that, but what I'm gonna do is, here here's what I know about Romans so far. Okay? This is bit the abbreviate them bottom line version. Right?
21:32
And that's the one through 11. Chapters one through 11 is what to believe, you know, doctrine, theology, the what to believe. And then the rest of the book, 12 through is it 16? 12 is how to behave. How to behave.
21:45
It's about our actions. It's about our attitudes. It's our response to everything that Paul's been saying in chapters one through 11. Make sense? The best title that I've seen for Romans 12 is this right here.
22:00
It is the outworking of God's righteousness in the conduct of believers. I thought that was so well put, so well said. It's God's righteousness that's displayed in us and then through us. That's very good. I liked it.
22:17
That wasn't mine. It was one of one of Ray's professors. But chapters 11, chapter 12, it's linked by this word, therefore. Therefore. And that conjunction right there is screaming to us.
22:33
Church, pay attention. Listen up. Antenna up here Because here is our reasonable response to the mercies of God. Our reasonable response to the mercies of God. I wanted to get to verse five today, and I can only get to two verses.
22:49
So, but these two verses, I think that they answer three very important questions for the life of a believer. Someone that is really seeking after Christ, following Christ in Christ, and they are, what is God calling me to do? What is God calling me? What is the action here that he's asking me to take? Why should I do that in the first place?
23:12
And what's the reason? And then how does that even happen? By what means? As we look at Romans twelve one and two, I think these questions will make more sense. They're gonna uncover those questions.
23:24
So let let me read it. It'll be on the screen. Two short verses and here's what they say. Therefore, remember, that's the conjunction. It's the pay attention.
23:34
Here we go, church. I urge you, brothers and sisters, in view of God's mercy, to offer your bodies as a living sacrifice, holy and pleasing to God. This is your true and proper worship. Do not conform to the pattern in this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind. Then you will be able to test and approve what God's will is, his good, pleasing, and perfect will.
24:10
Amen to that. Amen to that. If I'm a believer in Christ, what is God calling me to do? Why should I do that? How does that happen?
24:22
Beginning with, what is God calling me to do? What's the action? That's a question I've often I've often asked myself. God, what do we call I think we often would would say, God, what are you what are you calling me to do? And we we ask a lot of big questions.
24:37
Right? Big questions about life. Who do I marry? Where do I live? What what should this career path be?
24:46
What would I what would I do in these later years of life? We ask these we ask these questions. Right? But I think this one right here, this is the first one. This is the first one that we need to we need to ask God.
24:58
We need to to do because when we do this, all those other things, those details in life, they begin. God begins to unfold his will of those details. But the first one, what's God calling them to do? And the short answer is God is calling us to offer ourselves to him. Plain and simple.
25:18
He's calling us to offer ourselves to him fully, freely. Everything we are, our whole being, our whole existence, not just parts, not just pieces, not just here I am on a Sunday morning, but the rest of the week, whatever, but all all the time. All the time. The best definition I could find of offering ourselves as living sacrifices. Romans six thirteen.
25:43
I love it. Instead, give yourselves completely to God for you were dead, but now you have new life. When it says living sacrifices, that's the new life that we have from Christ. That's how it allows us to be living sacrifices. So use your whole body as an instrument to do what is right for the glory of God or instruments of righteousness, I think, a great translation for that.
26:07
But that's what it means to be a living sacrifice with a new life that Christ has given to us. We are actively, continually yielding ourselves as instruments of righteousness. Does this make sense? Well, the question becomes, well, why should I do that? You know, what reason?
26:34
Verse one, I think it'll be said in two words, and they are God's mercy. God's mercy. That's why we can offer ourselves to God. Remember early on in Romans? And we got the bad news before we got the good news.
26:51
It seemed like those Sundays, they were long and stretched out. And the bad news really is bad news. We really can't accept and appreciate the good news until we know what the bad news is, and it was no one's righteous, not even one, none of us sitting here in this room. No one's truly wise, and no one's seeking God. All have turned away.
27:12
There was a lot of bad news early on in Romans. I Ray looked downcast for those, like, oh, man, I got bad news to share again. He'd say, having to do with our de depravity, and we know it. It was a rough few weeks. But then then came the good news, the mercies of God.
27:32
And and it was like the light started to shine in Romans three, where Paul said, but now again, antenna up here, pay attention, but now God has shown us a way to be right with him. And we are made right with God by placing our faith in Jesus Christ, by belief in Christ, his work. And then the mercies of God, they just started to they just started to tick off one by one. And I and yesterday, as I got to just kinda comb over Romans, I get to just see them. And I wanna read some of them to you.
28:09
Will you just listen? If you wanna close your eyes, go ahead, but but would you listen to some of these mercies of God? Truly meditate on them, soak in them. This is the why we offer ourselves to God. Here again, why we would even do this in the first place.
28:27
Yet, God with undeserved kindness declares we are righteous. Oh, what joy for those whose disobedience is forgiven. God will also count us righteous if we believe in him. We have peace with God because of what Jesus Christ has done for us. God has given us his Holy Spirit to fill our hearts with his love.
29:05
We were utterly helpless. When we were utterly helpless, Christ came at just the right time, and he died for our sins. Listen to this. But as people sin more and more, God's wonderful grace became more abundant. Since we've been united in his death, we will also be raised to life as he was.
29:33
Yesterday, Dot's funeral gave testimony to that, and it was beautiful. It was absolutely beautiful. You live under the freedom of God's grace. How's that for merciful? The wages of sin is death, but the free gift of God is eternal life through Christ Jesus our lord.
29:58
There's no condemnation for those who belong to Christ Jesus. Amen. Even though your body will die because of sin, the spirit gives you life. How's that from merciful? Together with Christ, we're heirs of God's glory.
30:20
Wow. And having given us right standing with himself, he gives us his glory. Imagine that God inviting in us into his home, into his presence, into his house. Yesterday at Dot's I'm I'm going back to to Dot's Memorial because it was so beautiful, but the last part of Psalm 23, and I will dwell in the house of the Lord forever. That we are invited into that.
30:55
That's pretty amazing. How about this? If God is with us, who can ever be against us? One more. Nothing can ever separate us from God's love that is revealed to us in Christ Jesus.
31:13
How is that for mercy? Right? That's why I said it's been fun. It was just combing over Romans going, mercy, mercy, mercy, mercy. Look at all this.
31:23
They just keep coming over and over again. Why should we offer ourselves to God? I think maybe a better question to ask is, why shouldn't we? Why shouldn't we offer ourselves to God? The bottom line is, God has offered himself to you to mean to us fully and freely without reservation.
31:46
Well, we weren't even thinking of him. One, he wasn't even on our radar. He was offering himself to us fully and freely. Why wouldn't we return the favor? Right?
32:01
I think I love short verses, and this has been a very this said, like when my family is fighting, you know, or my kid, whatever. I go, listen, here's our verse. Here it is right here. Let's say it together. We love because he first loved us.
32:21
You know, that's a great summary of all the mercies. When Paul says, therefore, I urge you brothers and sisters in view of God's mercy. I love I love to study this because I found that this word urge, it's a non coercive word. It's a call to respond voluntarily. And I love that because I think that is the natural response that we ought to have.
32:50
It's a voluntarily, oh, yeah. You've given yourself to me. I'm on I'm with you. God isn't forcing us to offer ourselves as living sacrifices. It doesn't seem to be a style.
33:06
He is compelling us. He is winning us over so that we might offer ourselves as living sacrifices. It is a beautiful thing to be won over by Jesus. As we were singing those songs, I was like, I just felt like skipping almost this morning because they are so it's they really they they're they're about the joy that we have in Christ because of his mercies. It's like a couple.
33:39
I'm looking around and seeing there have been lot people married for many years. Right? But if you can remember back, back to the wedding vows that you said to one another, that there were traditional wedding vows. And you get to the part that says, with all that I am and all that I have, I honor you. Do you remember saying that to one another wholeheartedly without reservation?
34:13
You're going, oh, yeah. Of course. Of of course, I'm gonna give myself to you, but you've given yourself to me. We we are one because you want to, because you're compelled to, and you mean it. The last part of verse one, answering the question, why should we offer ourselves as living sacrifice to God?
34:46
It says, this is your true and proper worship. Other translations say, this is your reasonable service to God. And I wish every translation said that. I just think it's wonderful because truly, service to God is a reasonable thing. Sometimes we're unreasonable people.
35:13
But sometimes we are reasonable people. And I know that if someone's communicating to me, I like it when they're reasonable. And I like to think of myself as a reasonable person. Here are a couple if then statements that I pulled from the mercies of God. Make it reasonable.
35:37
If the wages of sin is death, but the free gift of God is eternal life through Christ Jesus, then isn't our service to God reasonable? Consider that. Wages of sins, death, gift of God, free gift of God, eternal life. Isn't that readable? Reasonable?
35:59
If there's no condemnation for those who belong to Christ Jesus, isn't our service to God a reasonable thing? How about this? If together with Christ, we are heirs of God's glory. Again, he's inviting us into his kingdom, his place, no more sorrow, or pain, eternal glory. Is it not a reasonable thing for ourselves to him?
36:31
Again, as we study through Romans and we look through all these mercies, they're compelling. Are they not? They're so compelling. They're winsome. They're reasonable.
36:48
And they ought to compel us to voluntarily offer ourselves to God. In the next couple of weeks, Ray's gonna be preaching. It's more of the hands to the plow kind of thing. So we might need to prod a little bit. Okay?
37:01
I'm warning you. But today, I'm asking you to sit, to consider all the mercies of God. Why you would even offer himself why you would offer yourself in the first place? Gonna be a shorter sermon here. Ultimately, though, how does this all happen?
37:22
Really, how does it happen? Know? Is it our own just our just our our will, and we just will it to happen. I don't believe so. This is a work of God.
37:40
This is a work of God. It's nothing short of a miracle that God would draw us to himself, show us his mercies, transform the way that we think. As we trust in the work of Christ, as we yield ourselves to him, God's spirit is born in us. That's the means in which this happens. God's spirit is born in us.
38:04
We're a new creation. The old you, that's gone. The new, that's come. Why? Because of Christ's righteousness in you that enables you to do all this stuff in the first place.
38:18
And as we walk in our spirit and we are a new creation, he transforms the way that we think. For the better. For the better. He renews our minds so that we can do this, that last part of verse two. I'm not just conforming to the parent in the world.
38:41
We know how the world works. Yep. And we can get in that stream and go. And this is an uphill battle. It really is.
38:50
It's it's going against the current in many ways, isn't it? But God can give us the mind to go against the current So that we can test and approve what God's will is. Not my will, not yours, not the world's, but what God's will is. And his will is good, and it's pleasing, and it's perfect. A lot of us ask the question, God, what's your will for my life?
39:24
What are you calling me to do? Look no further than Romans 12. Offer ourselves fully and freely to God first. That's step one. All those other bigger questions that we have in life, they begin to fall in place when we first answer this one.
39:47
Offering ourselves fully and freely to Jesus. Now, why should we do that? Read through Romans again. It's because of the mercies of God. Again, if there's no condemnation for those who belong to Christ Jesus, then our service to God is reasonable.
40:11
We have a reasonable faith church. I wouldn't be standing here in front of you if our faith wasn't reasonable. God is more than reasonable with us. He's downright merciful to us. And that's something I just wanna put on your radar this week.
40:30
But how does this all happen in the first place? Again, church, this is a sweet work of the Lord. It's him. It truly is. It is God.
40:41
It's his righteousness that's imputed to us. His spirit is born in us. He begins to renew our mind the way that we think, and then that transforms then how to how we act. Right? Because when we have this new mind, we begin to think, well, what what would God want me to do in this situation?
41:01
We begin to think like that, whereas other ways, we've just kind of ignore some of it. Right? But when God transforms the way that we think, we begin to go, God, what would you have me do here? And we're we're shooting up those little bullet prayers. Right?
41:14
During the daytime, God, what what should I do here? Should I pause? Maybe we should talk here with you you know what I mean? It's just it's a beautiful life lived in the spirit. How God leads and guides and he begins to answer those bigger questions that we have.
41:34
Renewing our mind to test and approve God's good, pleasing, and perfect will. So here's my my encouragement to you. Stay tuned. Okay? Because when Ray gets back, he's gonna get into all those tangible ways that this gets played out in the life of the believer.
41:52
K? So, again, there might be a little alright. There might be some poking. There might be some prodding here, but for the best, truly for the best. So if you would read through that whole of chapter 12 again this week, you're gonna be glad you did.
42:07
Everything that we covered today. Right? These these three questions, what's God calling me to do? How should I do that? How does that happen?
42:17
Everything that we covered today, it's gonna start coming together as we read the whole of Romans 12, and you're gonna be jumping out of your seats. Just excited, rearing to go, rearing to serve, rearing to be transformed by the renewing of your mind. That's my prayer anyway. It truly is church. Earlier this week, as we were talking about this passage passage and staff, Diane, she she just shared a little story about, sitting in in in in one of the pews, in one of the chairs, you know, early on in her Christian faith.
42:51
And she said that, she just came to the it was like God was was kinda really speaking to her and saying, Diane, you are not a sponge. You are not a sponge. And I I would say that to all of us. You're not a sponge. To to just have information somebody's once said to have information without application is an abomination, and okay, that might be a little harsh, but really, it is.
43:20
We are meant to take that in in information, and then it just it ought to shoot out. Enjoy. In service to God. Why? He's merciful.
43:29
So amen? I'm gonna I'm gonna invite up the worship team. We're gonna have one last song here. And while they're coming up, I think it'd be more than appropriate that we pray because we need God's help in this. Okay?
43:42
God, I thank you for your mercies. Let's just start by saying that. Thank you for your mercies. There are so many. There are so many, and I thank you for giving yourself fully and freely to us even when we weren't looking for you.
43:55
And in view of that mercy, here's my prayer. I pray that we would willingly yield ourselves to you as instruments of righteousness. So it's no longer I that live. It's no longer us that live, but it's you that live in and through us. That's the way to do it.
44:11
I think of the verse in Romans that says, when we let your spirit control us, when controls our mind, it leads to life and peace. And how true is that? We are all looking for life and peace. We're searching for it. And all the while, it is found in you.
44:30
And so my prayer is that which you would continue that good work if we are truly in you, believers in you. We remain on your vine, and you begin to work and continue to work through us as we yield ourselves to you, and that there would be true fruit that comes from our life. That sweet fruit of the spirit as we offer ourselves to you in Christ's name. Amen. Let's sing again.
45:01
You
45:03
don't have to sit down, Carl.
45:05
Stand let's stand and sing together. I am thine, oh Lord. I am thine, oh Lord. I have heard thy voice and it told thy love to me. But I long to rise in the arms of faith and be closer drawn to thee.
45:32
Draw me nearer nearer blessed lord to the cross where thou hast died. Draw me nearer nearer nearer blessed lord to thy precious bleeding side consecrate me now to thy service lord by the power of grace divine let my soul look up with a steadfast hope and my will be lost in thine amen Draw me nearer, nearer, blessed lord, to the cross where thou hast died. Draw me nearer, nearer, nearer, blessed lord, to thy precious bleeding side. Oh, the pure delight of a single hour that before thy throne I spend. When I kneel in prayer and to thee my God I commune as Brenda with friend draw me nearer nearer blessed lord to the cross where thou hast died draw me nearer nearer nearer blessed lord to thy precious bleeding side.
47:05
There are depths of love that I cannot know till I cross the narrow sea. There are heights of joy that I may not reach till I rest in peace with thee draw me near near nearer blessed lord to the cross where thou hast died draw me nearer nearer nearer, blessed lord, to thy precious bleeding side.
47:45
Amen. How about this for our last benediction so we really make it click. I I'm asking us to read this in full altogether. I took I kinda deconstructed it, but let's all together here and say it together. Ready?
48:01
Therefore, I urge you, brothers and sisters, in view of God's mercy, to offer your bodies as a living sacrifice, holy and pleasing to God. This is your true and proper worship. Do not conform to the pattern of this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind. Then you are able to test, approve what God's will is, his good, pleasing, and perfect will. Amen.
48:33
Live it out.
