Scripture referenced 9 passages

The passage this message was preached from, in full, with every other passage it reached for.

Hebrews 9:1-10:20

main sermon text, extended reading through old and new covenant worship

1 Now indeed even the first covenant had ordinances of divine service, and an earthly sanctuary.

2 For a tabernacle was prepared. In the first part were the lamp stand, the table, and the show bread; which is called the Holy Place.

3 After the second veil was the tabernacle which is called the Holy of Holies,

4 having a golden altar of incense, and the ark of the covenant overlaid on all sides with gold, in which was a golden pot holding the manna, Aaron’s rod that budded, and the tablets of the covenant;

5 and above it cherubim of glory overshadowing the mercy seat, of which things we can’t speak now in detail.

6 Now these things having been thus prepared, the priests go in continually into the first tabernacle, accomplishing the services,

7 but into the second the high priest alone, once in the year, not without blood, which he offers for himself, and for the errors of the people.

8 The Holy Spirit is indicating this, that the way into the Holy Place wasn’t yet revealed while the first tabernacle was still standing;

9 which is a symbol of the present age, where gifts and sacrifices are offered that are incapable, concerning the conscience, of making the worshiper perfect;

10 being only (with meats and drinks and various washings) fleshly ordinances, imposed until a time of reformation.

11 But Christ having come as a high priest of the coming good things, through the greater and more perfect tabernacle, not made with hands, that is to say, not of this creation,

12 nor yet through the blood of goats and calves, but through his own blood, entered in once for all into the Holy Place, having obtained eternal redemption.

13 For if the blood of goats and bulls, and the ashes of a heifer sprinkling those who have been defiled, sanctify to the cleanness of the flesh:

14 how much more will the blood of Christ, who through the eternal Spirit offered himself without defect to God, cleanse your conscience from dead works to serve the living God?

15 For this reason he is the mediator of a new covenant, since a death has occurred for the redemption of the transgressions that were under the first covenant, that those who have been called may receive the promise of the eternal inheritance.

16 For where a last will and testament is, there must of necessity be the death of him who made it.

17 For a will is in force where there has been death, for it is never in force while he who made it lives.

18 Therefore even the first covenant has not been dedicated without blood.

19 For when every commandment had been spoken by Moses to all the people according to the law, he took the blood of the calves and the goats, with water and scarlet wool and hyssop, and sprinkled both the book itself and all the people,

20 saying, “This is the blood of the covenant which God has commanded you.”

21 Moreover he sprinkled the tabernacle and all the vessels of the ministry in the same way with the blood.

22 According to the law, nearly everything is cleansed with blood, and apart from shedding of blood there is no remission.

23 It was necessary therefore that the copies of the things in the heavens should be cleansed with these; but the heavenly things themselves with better sacrifices than these.

24 For Christ hasn’t entered into holy places made with hands, which are representations of the true, but into heaven itself, now to appear in the presence of God for us;

25 nor yet that he should offer himself often, as the high priest enters into the holy place year by year with blood not his own,

26 or else he must have suffered often since the foundation of the world. But now once at the end of the ages, he has been revealed to put away sin by the sacrifice of himself.

27 Inasmuch as it is appointed for men to die once, and after this, judgment,

28 so Christ also, having been offered once to bear the sins of many, will appear a second time, without sin, to those who are eagerly waiting for him for salvation.

1 For the law, having a shadow of the good to come, not the very image of the things, can never with the same sacrifices year by year, which they offer continually, make perfect those who draw near.

2 Or else wouldn’t they have ceased to be offered, because the worshipers, having been once cleansed, would have had no more consciousness of sins?

3 But in those sacrifices there is a yearly reminder of sins.

4 For it is impossible that the blood of bulls and goats should take away sins.

5 Therefore when he comes into the world, he says, “Sacrifice and offering you didn’t desire, but you prepared a body for me.

6 You had no pleasure in whole burnt offerings and sacrifices for sin.

7 Then I said, ‘Behold, I have come (in the scroll of the book it is written of me) to do your will, O God.’”

8 Previously saying, “Sacrifices and offerings and whole burnt offerings and sacrifices for sin you didn’t desire, neither had pleasure in them” (those which are offered according to the law),

9 then he has said, “Behold, I have come to do your will.” He takes away the first, that he may establish the second,

10 by which will we have been sanctified through the offering of the body of Jesus Christ once for all.

11 Every priest indeed stands day by day serving and often offering the same sacrifices, which can never take away sins,

12 but he, when he had offered one sacrifice for sins forever, sat down on the right hand of God;

13 from that time waiting until his enemies are made the footstool of his feet.

14 For by one offering he has perfected forever those who are being sanctified.

15 The Holy Spirit also testifies to us, for after saying,

16 “This is the covenant that I will make with them: ‘After those days,’ says the Lord, ‘I will put my laws on their heart, I will also write them on their mind;’” then he says,

17 “I will remember their sins and their iniquities no more.”

18 Now where remission of these is, there is no more offering for sin.

19 Having therefore, brothers, boldness to enter into the holy place by the blood of Jesus,

quoted via Hebrews 10 as the new covenant promise, God writing laws on hearts and remembering sins no more

31 “Behold, the days come,” says Yahweh, “that I will make a new covenant with the house of Israel, and with the house of Judah:

32 not according to the covenant that I made with their fathers in the day that I took them by the hand to bring them out of the land of Egypt; which covenant of mine they broke, although I was a husband to them,” says Yahweh.

33 “But this is the covenant that I will make with the house of Israel after those days,” says Yahweh: I will put my law in their inward parts, and I will write it in their heart. I will be their God, and they shall be my people.

34 They will no longer each teach his neighbor, and every man teach his brother, saying, ‘Know Yahweh;’ for they will all know me, from their least to their greatest,” says Yahweh: “for I will forgive their iniquity, and I will remember their sin no more.”

Recap

The message in order, in a few minutes of reading.

This message was the heart of Pastor Jonathan's long journey through Hebrews, covering chapters nine and ten in a single extended communion service. He walked the congregation through the contrast between the old covenant system of repeated sacrifice and the once-for-all sacrifice of Jesus, and then led everyone to the Lord's table with that contrast still in the air. The point was simple and serious: the old system was always pointing here, and there is no going back.

What was said

Pastor Jonathan opened by acknowledging that the Hebrew Christians he was preaching to were tempted to walk back into old covenant Judaism under pressure from both Jewish and Greek persecutors. He has said throughout this series that most people in the room are not tempted to go back to temple worship, but they may be tempted to return to whatever way of life they lived before Christ. The argument Hebrews makes against retreating is the same either way.

He described the layout of the tabernacle, the two rooms, the lampstand and table in the first, and the ark of the covenant in the second, the most holy place. The point was not architectural detail for its own sake. The point was access, or rather the lack of it. Only the high priest entered that second room, and only once a year, and even then he carried blood for his own sins as well as the people's sins committed in ignorance. Outright, knowing rebellion was not covered by that system at all.

The writer of Hebrews calls all of that a shadow and a copy, not the real thing. The gifts and sacrifices offered under that system could never actually cleanse a person's conscience. They reminded worshipers of their sins year after year but had no power to take those sins away. The system was good, Pastor Jonathan said, as far as it goes. Given by God, it was meant to show people their need and point them forward to the One who was coming.

Christ, by contrast, entered the true most holy place, not one made by human hands, and he did it with his own blood, not the blood of animals. He did this once. The repetition in the text is deliberate, and Pastor Jonathan kept returning to it: once for all time. Because the sacrifice is complete and the work is finished, Christ sat down at the right hand of the Father. A priest under the old system stood and kept standing because the work was never done. Jesus sat down.

The passage from Jeremiah 31 that the writer of Hebrews quotes brings the whole argument home. God promised a new covenant in which he would put his laws on people's hearts and minds and would never again remember their sins and lawless deeds. When sins have been forgiven, there is no need to offer any more sacrifices. That is the covenant Jesus announced on the night he was betrayed when he said, this is the new covenant in my blood.

Pastor Jonathan was careful to explain why the congregation was about to take communion if sacrifice is finished. This is not a sacrifice, he said more than once. It is not something that transmits grace through the person leading it. It is a remembrance and a celebration. The old sacrifices reminded people of their sins. This remembrance looks back to the One who dealt with those sins once and for all, and it proclaims his death until he comes again.

Doing a Bible study?

Here is a guide we have prepared for you: the passages in order, questions for the group, and room to write.

  1. The pastor described the old covenant as good but temporary, pointing toward something greater. In what ways do you still catch yourself looking for something other than Christ to deal with your guilt or make you right with God?
  2. The sermon said the old system could cleanse ceremonial impurity but could not cleanse the conscience. What is the difference, in your own experience, between feeling less guilty and actually being forgiven?

22:27 Y'all can have a seat. How we come to the time in the service right now where we voluntarily and with intention and care decide to give back from that inexhaustible well that you've given to us, lord. This is a a showing that we trust you. Lord, I thank you for taking what we offer and always, always, always, always doing something with it. 23:09 Lord, would you accomplish your will in your way You have told us lord that we would be your witnesses Jerusalem, Judea, Samaria, and the uttermost parts. Would you start from right here and go out from here, lord. Lead us in the steps that you'd have us walk in. In Jesus name, we ask for you to multiply these gifts to do your kingdom's business. Amen.
26:08 Church Thank you, Carl and the band. You listen to the songs and you paid attention to the words this morning and Carl always does this. He reads ahead in the text, knows what's coming, and then kind of prays about it, fits the song service around it. If you paid attention to the lyrics this morning, it is the sermon today and if I get to the sermon here, the slides up here. It's Hebrews nine one through ten twenty And you know, I usually do a paragraph at a time or two or three sentences at a time.
26:56 Really, really. We're doing nine one through ten twenty. And the reason being, it is an extended communion experience. So we have up here on the the communion table that this do in remembrance of me table. We have prepared cracker and, you know, bread and and a cup, little cups of Welch's grape juice in this case but it's a remembrance, a reminder of that night that Jesus was betrayed when he instituted this and it's an extended communion experience.
27:30 Now, I have been preaching through Hebrews for some time now and this is the heart of it. It is the very heart of the book of Hebrews and it seems like, well, he's shying away and going to do a whole lot at one time. I'm going to do a whole lot at one time. I think this requires a whole lot of explanation. I think that the author of Hebrews has been building to this place and now is going to give kind of not a final argument but good arguments about why you should not retreat in the first century.
28:02 The Hebrews that he was writing to, the people who had been raised in the Jewish background, Greek speaking Jewish background, people who had trusted in the way were being tempted to walk away from Jesus and go back to old covenant Judaism. Now, I've said multiple times since I started this study that we are not tempted to go back to old covenant Judaism. Most of us in this room, most of us are not tempted to do that. We may be tempted to go back into whatever previous lifestyle we live but we're probably not going to go back to old temple worship. We're just not doing that.
28:38 But they were tempted at this time. Temple still stood when this book was written, we assume and so, looking forward to that time of the New Covenant is what all of the Old Covenant was about. I had somebody I told y'all this last week stop me two weeks ago and said, I don't like the word flawed. You say flawed or faulted each time you're talking about the old covenant and I don't like that. It it bothers me because it's from God and it was good and Paul says it was good and we know that it was good because it was given by God.
29:12 It was good because it was given by God to point us towards our need for a savior Jesus who is coming and so there when he said, what is it that's flawed about it? What is it that faulted about it? And I said, well, it has no power to say. Yeah, but it's still good. Well, it is good as far as it goes.
29:30 It lets us know about our sin. Paul says that in Romans. The writer of Hebrews says it's powerless to perfect. The law is powerless to perfect or to make things right with God. So, what is it?
29:45 And I said, I think it's just the temporary nature We've been talking about the old high priest multiple and there's that list of all the weaknesses and then the perfection of Christ and now that he has come, this old covenant was pointing towards him and is now fulfilled in Christ and now it's new covenant. That's where we're going today because every time that we do the Lord's supper, we talk about Jesus saying, this is the new covenant in my blood. People had been anticipating this for from Hosea from Isaiah and from Jeremiah for hundreds of years hundreds of years and when Jesus said that this is the new covenant in my blood. We're going to be comparing back and forth with the writers or writer of Hebrews today for an extended communion service. Now, last week, I did say, now, the main point of everything that we've discussed so far is that we have such a high priest that's talking about Jesus and then I said, all of these verses that are to come, we haven't hit yet have to do with the same subject.
30:50 So, nine one through twenty eight and ten one through 20 have to do with that. We have such a high priest and there's going to be a comparison between Old Covenant and New Covenant and we've got a couple more verses up there that we'll hit later on after the great hall of faith in chapter 11 and after the closing gets going but I want you to just try to stay in the flow with me. I changed the Bible version this week to the New Living Translation which is easier to read It's easier to stay with the flow of it rather than me stopping and quibble and having to explain what the English means. We're just gonna read it. And I I don't do this very often, but it's a lot.
31:32 And so we're just gonna go through. I have half as many slides today as I usually do, but they have three times as many words on them as they usually do. I don't want for this to be death by PowerPoint, okay? I know that it can seem that way. I'll try to animate as we go, but this is the heart of this book.
31:50 If you get this, you might not be tempted to go back to temple worship but you might be tempted to go back into whatever licentious behavior was your jam before okay? And you might be tempted to go back into the world's view, the prevailing world view of the time now that all roads lead to a good place, a good place. It's they'll stop short and say in heaven now. Okay. Here we go.
32:22 This is nine one through twenty eight and ten one through 18 all the same. So, and I kept the headings in there too. I kept the headings. I don't I don't usually do that. They're not inspired but I think it's helpful to hang this on.
32:33 So, old rules about worship and it's nice. It says, old rules because those were old ones that were pointing towards the new way. That first covenant between God and Israel had regulations for worship and a place of worship here on Earth. There were two rooms in that tabernacle. Tabernacle simply means tent.
32:55 That's the word for it. The Greek word is tent. There were two rooms in that tent. So, there's a big tent. In the first room was a lamp stand and a table and sacred loaves of bread on the table and the room was called the holy place.
33:11 Now, I could go into artistic representations of those things but I won't and I won't because the author of Hebrews doesn't, okay? Just simply says, you know this. Y'all don't might not know this but those folks knew this. Yeah, there's a lampstand, there's a table, sacred loaves, bread on the table. Then there was a curtain and behind that curtain was the second room.
33:35 Second room called the most holy place. Room right there is tent. There's a second little tent inside the big tent. In that room, were a gold incense altar and a wooden chest called the ark of the covenant. I mean, that was the actual ark of the covenant.
33:49 What they carried the 10 commandments in which was covered with gold on all sides and inside that ark were a gold jar containing manna from their time in Israel. A lot of Israel's experience was looking back to the time when God had provided for them, right? So, inside of the ark of the covenant, there was manna and there was Aaron's staff that sprouted leaves. That's Old Testament story. They knew it very very well.
34:16 That was kept inside of the ark and there were stone tablets. The stone tablets, the 10 commandments were kept inside that ark of the covenant. Some of y'all know this best from writers of the lost ark. I know that. They knew this very very well.
34:29 They knew what was in there. So, he's not making the argument for this is the architecture of the place but here we go forward. Above the ark were the cherubim of divine glory. So, there were two angels bowing towards wings outstretched, whose wings were stretched out over the ark's cover, the place of atonement, the mercy seat, the place of atonement. But we cannot explain these things in detail now.
34:55 So if you've got an artistic representation of it, it's from the Old Testament, not from Hebrews. When these things were all in place, the priest regularly entered the first room. That's normal. That was a holy place. They regularly entered the first room as they perform their religious duties but only the high priest ever entered into the most holy place and there was only one guy who was high priest at a time.
35:22 They didn't have multiples at the same time. Only the high priest entered into the most holy place, the holy of holies and him only once a year I've mentioned this multiple times as we've been building up to this in Hebrews because we don't know the first century stuff like they did and he always offered blood for his own sins because he had sins. That's one of his weaknesses He had to offer blood for his own sins and for the sins of the people that have been committed in ignorance. Oh my goodness Outright rebellion against God was actually not covered by that atonement. Think about that for just a minute.
36:07 They knew the law and sometimes just knowing the law, what makes you want to break it, right? He always offered blood for his own sins and he offered that blood for the sins of peep that the people had committed in ignorance, not knowing. We step in it from time to time. We bump our heads, right? From time to time.
36:31 Actually, ignorance where we just didn't know or we weren't paying attention to what we did know. Ignorant or misguided. He always offered blood for his own sins and for the sins of the people that had committed in ignorance and by these regulations, these were the rules. Yes, by these regulations, the Holy Spirit revealed that the entrance to the most holy place was not freely open as long as the tabernacle and the system represented were still in use. They were not.
37:00 It was a very, very secluded, very distant place and it was set up and there are regulations about how you would approach this. Sin had to be dealt with and there was a system that pointed to the new covenant but while that tent and that system were represented were still in use, it was not freely open. It was a very limited access. This is an illustration and this is an illustration. This is an illustration.
37:33 That's what the writer of Hebrews says. I'm not giving you a new illustration. This is illustration to the present time for the gifts and the sacrifices that the priest offer are not able to cleanse the consciences of the people who bring them. It didn't do anything for actual guilt. It was a system that pointed to Christ for sure, their need for a savior.
38:04 But the gifts and sacrifices that the priest offer, they're not able to cleanse the consciences of the people who bring them. For that old system only deals with food and drink and various cleansing ceremon physical regulations that were in effect only until a better system could be established. Does that mean that we're just thinking about how this is going to be or does that mean that God was pointing us toward the system that would be established his way his truth, his life. Physical regulations. Catch that.
38:41 Physical regulations. So, Christ is the perfect sacrifice as the heading in the New Living Translation for these next few verses. So Christ, Christ has now become the high priest over all the good things that have come. He has entered that greater, that more perfect tabernacle, that tent in heaven. The actual or the true is what it has called this last week in the sermon in the text.
39:07 He has entered that greater, more perfect tabernacle in heaven which was not made by human hands. This is not part of this created world. It's holy other and Jesus has entered it with his own blood not the blood of goats and calves He entered the most holy place once for all time and secured our rede forever. If you've gone for the way, the truth, the life, don't turn back to sacrificing goats and calves. That pointed to this and this is the once for all time.
39:42 For everybody who ever committed a sin and ignorance and plead with the priest on their behalf and plead with God on their behalf and dealt with it, they were looking forward to Christ's blood. It says, once for all time. We have to look back to Christ the way they had to look forward to him. God would provide a way. Go back to the story of Abraham and Isaac, right?
40:08 God would provide a way. With his own blood, not the blood of goats and calves, he entered the most holy place once for all time and secured our redemption forever. Under the old system, the blood of goats and bulls and the ashes of a heifer could cleanse people's bodies from ceremonial impurity. So there's a way of saying you're unclean, ceremonial unclean for seven days after such and such happens. You touch a dead body, you're ceremonially unclean for a certain number of days.
40:39 And in order, you have to let the time pass or you have to sacrifice something. Shedding of blood was an important part of that system. Pointing towards the blood of perfectly innocent Jesus Christ. Under the old system, blood of goats and bulls and ashes of a heifer could cleanse people's bodies from ceremonial impurity. Just think, how much more the blood of Christ then will purify our conscience It said before that it could not purify the conscience of people who committed sin Blood of bulls and goats could never do that but just think how much more The blood of Christ will purify our conscience from sinful deeds so that we can worship the living God.
41:27 Amen. For by the power of the eternal spirit, that's the Holy Spirit. Christ offered himself to God as a perfect sacrifice for our sins. The lamb that had to be without blemish or spot, right? Christ was without blemish or spot.
41:46 He lived a perfect life in complete submission to the eternal spirit. Voluntarily, he was tempted in every way just as we're tempted yet he was without sin. He was without blemish and he offered himself to God as a perfect sacrifice for our sins and that is why he is the one who mediates. By the way, the New Living Translation does not capitalize deity. It doesn't capital the H as in he.
42:11 I started to go through the whole thing and do it but they don't do it. I'm not I'm just put it up there just like it is. New Living Translation. That's why he Christ is the one who mediates a new covenant between God and people. He is fully God.
42:25 He is fully man He is the mediator of this new covenant between God and people so that all who are called can receive the eternal inheritance that God has promised them. It is a very real invitation to put your faith and trust in Christ. Those he called, he also justified. Those he justified, he also predestined to be conformed into the image of God, the image of Christ. So, if you're a believer here this morning, you've been called and you've been justified, and God has predestined you to be conformed into the image of Christ, his son.
43:10 He wants to make you holy. Now you submitting your will to his will is a requirement for you to become holy because you can resist him. The argument here is don't. Don't resist him. He's made the perfect sacrifice.
43:28 All of your sins of the past have been dealt with and you've been given power in the Holy Spirit to walk forward holy. You can receive the eternal inheritance God has promised you For Christ died set them free from the penalty of sins they had committed under that first covenant. So, that is them looking forward to. These are people of the first covenant. They're looking forward to Christ and the blood of Christ is what makes all that they had done before whole and fulfilled and complete.
44:01 Everything else was a shadow or a copy leading up to this and then this shed blood was what purchased the salvation and redemption of all. Anyone who look forward to or anyone who looks back and trust God for his provision. Now, when someone leaves a will, now, if you're reading along in your Bible, it might say covenant right there. The word is covenant or will. It's the same word, okay?
44:27 But the argument works, I think, in English this way. Someone leaves a a will, it's necessary to prove that the person who made it is dead. Right? Like you can't just start to enact the will after while somebody's still alive. They've got to be dead.
44:44 There has to be a death. And the will goes into effect only after the person's death. While the person who made it is still alive, that will cannot be put into effect. Okay That's why even the first covenant was put into effect with the blood of an animal. If you remember all of the covenants that God made all throughout had something to do with the shedding of blood That's why the first covenant was put into effect with the blood of an animal.
45:10 For after Moses had read each of God's commandments to all the people he took, the blood of calves and of goats along with water and he sprinkled both the books of God's law and all the people using hyssop branches and scarlet wool. They knew this very well. That sounds kind of like, wow, primitive religion to us maybe They knew this and then he said, this blood the death of whatever It's it's death This death this blood confirms the covenant that God has made with you and in the same way, you sprinkle blood on the tabernacle, that tent and on everything that was used for worship, everything had to be cleansed with blood. In fact, according to the law of Moses, nearly everything was purified with blood. It's all about blood.
45:58 Sounds awful to us. Don't it? But I think that's because we're living on our side of history where the blood of Christ once for all. A lot of us have been raised in church and it just seems like, wow. But think about this, all of that primitive religion all over the world where they're still sacrificing chickens and everything.
46:15 That's it sounds crazy to us, right? It sounds crazy to us because our one sacrifice has already been made. There is an inherent sense within humans that knows we are lacking and we need to be made right. And so even the copies that are primitive religion even those copies are pointing to the truth of God that without the shedding of blood, there's no remission of sins. This blood confirms the covenant that God has made with you and in the same way, he sprinkled blood on the Taber and everything used for worship everything nearly everything was purified with blood for without the shedding of blood, there's no forgiveness That's why the Tabernacle and everything in it which were copies of things in heaven.
46:58 There we go. So, the Tabernacle and everything in it. Exodus 25, God tells Moses exactly how to do. It might be 24. My exactly how he is supposed to set things up to be a copy of the things in heaven.
47:13 That's why the tabernacle, the tent, and everything in it which were copies of things in heaven had to be purified by the blood of animals but the real things in heaven had to be purified with far better sacrifices than the blood of animals. For these few verses, these three verses go together. They're kind of small but for Christ did not enter into a holy place that was made with human hands. Which was only a copy of the true one in heaven He entered into heaven itself to appear now before God on our behalf. Where is Christ right now?
47:51 Seated at the right hand of the father interceding for us. And he didn't enter heaven to offer himself again and again and again and again and again like the high priest here on Earth who enters the most holy place year after year with the blood of an animal. Here we go again. If that had been necessary, Christ would have had to die again and again ever since the world began in every generation for all people, but that's not the way it is. Now, once for all time, that says once.
48:23 It says on up there, but it says once in the text. Now, once for all time, he has appeared at the end of age to remove sin by his own death as a sacrifice. In his goodness and righteousness and complete submission to the spirit, he knew that his voluntary sacrifice is the only thing that would remove sin, that would deal with the guilt, the actual guilt. A lot of the goal of therapy is that you don't feel guilty, right? If you're guilty you're guilty Christ's death dealt with actual guilt not with a feeling of guilt only.
49:11 And just as each person is destined to die once and after that comes the judgment, so also Christ was offered once for all time as a sacrifice to take away the sins of many people. He will come again not to deal with our sins but to bring salvation to all those who are eagerly waiting for him. Ultimate salvation will be on that great and mighty day of the Lord. But those who are eagerly expecting will be those. The the old system, this is Hebrews ten one and two two.
49:46 The old system Christ sacrifice once for all. The old system under the law of Moses was only a shadow, a dim preview of good things to come, not the good things themselves. The sacrifices under that system were repeated again and again. Year after year but they were never able to provide perfect cleansing for those who came to worship. If they could have provided perfect cleansing, the sacrifices then would have stopped.
50:08 For the worshipers would have been purified once for all time. Now what were they being tempted to do? They're being persecuted as Christians for being godless among the Greeks because they only believed in Jesus of in God. They were monotheists, Trinitarian monotheist problem. The best way to put that but they were being persecuted by Jews because they had added to God.
50:34 They were being persecuted by the Greeks because they wouldn't worship the emperor. The text here, the old system under the law of Moses was only a shadow, a dim preview of good things to come, not the good things themselves. The sacrifices under that system were repeated again and again, year after year, never able to provide perfect cleansing for those who came to worship. If they could've provided perfect cleansing, the sacrifices would have stopped. For the worshipers would have been purified once for all time and their feelings of guilt would've disappeared.
51:09 Amen.
51:13 But instead, now typical of the writer of Hebrews, we're going get into some Old Testament arguments here. The whole of chapter nine had illusions and references but no direct quotes and then chapter 10 is given quotes behind all this. This stuff we heard before in chapter eight but instead, those sacrifices actually reminded them of their sins year after year. Now, we're going into a time of communion today. We do this about once a month.
51:39 We usually do it. We try to do it on the first week of the month but this is something that we do over and over but this is not a sacrifice. This is not a sacrifice. This is a remembrance of something. This says, instead, those sacrifices actually reminded them of their sins year after year.
51:56 It didn't do anything to take em away. That make sense? It just reminded them how sinful they are. That does humble you and it does put you in a position of throwing yourself on the mercy of God. And if you find yourself humbled and putting yourself in a position of mercy and you call out on God before Jesus, you call out on God to save you mercifully.
52:22 He says that everyone who calls on the name of the Lord will be saved. They had to look forward to him just like we have to look back to him. For it's not possible for the blood of bull and goats to take away sin. That's why when Christ came into the world, he said to God, you did not want animal sacrifices or sin offerings but you have given me a body to offer and you were not pleased with burnt offerings or other offerings for sin and then I said, look, I have come to do your will, oh God, as is written about me in the scriptures. That's Psalms 46 through eight.
52:58 It's translated directly from the Septuagint version. For first Christ said, you didn't want animal sacrifices or sin offerings or burnt offerings or other offerings for sin nor were you pleased with them. Oh my. Doesn't that throw you off? Well, know Psalms is true even if I'm first century.
53:15 I know Psalms is true and so, I've never really understood that before because we keep doing this and for trusting in the system, we're trusting in what the system points to. It's what the writer of Hebrews was saying. You did not want animal sacrifices, sin offers, or burnt offerings, or other offerings for sin nor were you pleased with them though they are required by the law of Moses. Then he said, look, I've come to do your will. Did Jesus do God's will?
53:41 Amen. He did. Look, I've come to do your will. He cancels the first covenant in order to put the second into effect for God's will was for us to be made holy by the sacrifice of the body of Jesus Christ once for all time. Do you notice that the sacrifice of Christ is a once for all time and it says it over and over and over and over again?
54:06 Under the old covenant, the priest stands and ministers. The standing is kind of important here. He stands and he ministers. Before the altar, day after day, this is outside of the Holy of Holies. Only once a year did he go into the Holy of Holies.
54:20 It was very reserved time but normally, they go in, they take their turn, they stand, and they minister before the altar day after day offering the same sacrifices again and again which can never take away sins but our high priest offered himself to God as a single sacrifice for sins, good for all time, then he sat down. The work of Christ is finished. You can't add anything to it. You have to accept it as finished. You can't add anything to it.
54:47 You can live your life in thankfulness to him, bending your will to his will to walk forward, but it does not earn you favor with God. When God looks upon a believer in Christ, he sees the righteousness of Christ. He sat down in the place of honor at God's right hand and there he waits until enemies are humbled and made a footstool under his feet. That is definitely not a universalist stance there. There will be those who believe and there will be those who reject Christ.
55:27 There he waits until his enemies are humbled and made a footstool under his feet for by that one offering, he forever made perfect those who are being made holy. Remember the message of the cross, message of the cross from first Corinthians one eighteen, for the message of the cross is foolishness to those who are perishing but to us who are being saved. It's a progression. We're being saved. That great mighty ultimate day of the Lord will be when we are ultimately saved, glorified even but to those who are walking this out in this life, the message of the cross is foolishness to those who are perishing but to those who are being saved, it's the very power of God.
56:10 And from first Timothy, I'll throw that in there too. This saying is trustworthy and deserving of all full acceptance that Christ Jesus came into this world to save sinners. That's who we are. Sinners, we're either sinners saved by grace or we're sinners condemned justly. The Holy Spirit also testifies that this is so for he says this and this is through the prophet Jeremiah.
56:35 Jeremiah 31. This is the new covenant that I will make with my people on that day, says the Lord. I will put my laws in their hearts and I will write them on their minds and then he says, I will never again remember their sins and their lawless deeds. Amen. That's Jeremiah thirty one thirty one through 34 is what he's quoting right there and then closes off with this and when the sins have been forgiven, there's no need to offer any more sacrifices and then you might think, well, why do we do this?
57:08 Why do we get together and do this? This is not a sacrifice. This is not a means of the grace of God. You don't have to do this. You get to do this as a celebration of the sacrifice that Jesus made, but it's not a requirement.
57:28 It's not something that it's gonna transmit from me, the guy that stands between you and heaven. Okay? I'm not the mediator of this covenant. This is the mediator is who we're celebrating right here The mediator of this covenant is by Christ blood, the representation that he gave on the night that he was betrayed and said, this is the new covenant in my blood. Take this and do it as often as you will in remembrance of me.
57:55 He's talking about remembering this and that's why we did such a long passage this morning. All of this says, the old covenant was looking forward to the new. Grab on to the new. Next week, we get to my favorite little blurb in all of scripture, I think and I'll give you two verses of it right here and so dear brothers and sisters, we can boldly enter into heaven's most holy place because of the blood of Jesus. We can't.
58:23 Normal human beings that just accept the truth of Jesus. In our limited understanding, we put our faith in him and he gives us access to God. By his death, Jesus opened a new and life giving way through the curtain, the veil into the most holy place. I want to invite the elders to come forward while I pray. God, would you bless this time, lord, this extended introduction into communion where we compare and contrast the old covenant and the new.
58:59 Lord, would you draw us in close into that new covenant? May we not just see this as old regulations for how things go? Would you, Lord, write it on our hearts and minds? May we, Lord, have the the proper lenses, the lenses of humility to be able to see what it is that you've said and to walk in accordance with it, to walk forward in the steps that you prepared in advance for us. In Jesus name, lord, we ask you to cleanse our consciences from sin before we even take this communion, lord.
59:40 I I go back to the section where it said, for sins committed in ignorance or we do bump our heads and step in it every once in a while but lord, there may be something that we were outwardly rebellious about or some sin that we want to hold on to and lord, may we make a choice here today to accept the blood of Christ to cover all past guilt and his submission to the spirit to cover us into the future day by day, our higher power, that which we're powerless over, may he take it on the cross and deal with it and may we walk it out day by day. Lord, I I pray that you'd forgive my own personal sin and I pray that people would take this opportunity before we celebrate Christ's perfect sacrifice together. Thank you lord that you have. I praise you lord that you say, if we're confessing our sins, you're faithful and you're just to be forgiven our sins and cleansing us of all unrighteous. Thank you that you're at work doing.
1:00:42 In Jesus name, would you bless this communion right now As we distribute this bread, amen.
1:01:09 I can hear my savior calling. Can hear my savior calling. Take thy cross and follow. Follow me. Where he leads me, I will follow.
1:04:18 On the same night that he was betrayed and I say that every time I say that I think we betray you lord. We betray you lord On the same night that you are betrayed after supper, after that supper where you cleansed all of your discip feet, lord. After supper, he took bread and he broke it and he said, this is my body which is given for you. Take this and eat and do it in remembrance of me. Thank you Jesus for your perfect life.
1:04:51 I thank you that you voluntarily chose to walk in those steps exactly as the Holy Spirit laid them out no matter the difficulty, no matter the mocking or the scorn. May we, lord, by your sacrifice of your blood, be cleansed and purified and sanctified to be able to do likewise. Would you bless, lord, this cup as we distribute it. May everyone who partakes, lord, sense a oneness with all Christendom lord, may we together represent you well.
1:05:40 God
1:10:04 And in the same manner that he had taken the bread, he took the cup and he said to his disciples, this is the new covenant in my blood. You take this and you do it as often as you will in remembrance of me. Oh, the culmination of time. This is the new covenant, Trusting in Christ and the sacrifice that has been made once for all. They were looking forward to it just into that weekend and we're looking backward to it around two thousand years but it's once and for all.
1:10:40 This is the new covenant Jesus said in my blood. Take this and drink and do it as often as you will in remembrance of me. Paul says, we proclaim the Lord's death until he comes again. Imma ask the band to come on back up for one chorus of a song. If y'all would stand, this is one Tim and the Glory Boys actually sang this the other night.
1:11:07 It's a benediction. I think the name of it is benediction. So, this is the blessing for the skedaddling.
1:11:18 There it is. Let's learn a chorus first. Would you meet me at the chorus? The chorus is,
1:11:24 to God be the glory forever never. To God be the praise of all men. To God be the glory forever never. To God be the glory of men. And make face to shine upon.
1:12:05 And when we part ways, to God be the glory forever and ever. To God be the praise of all men. To God
1:12:56 and now may the Lord direct your hearts into God's love and into Christ's perseverance. In Jesus name, may you walk out with a blessing, carrying it for all. Amen.
