Pay Careful Attention to How You Walk

Scripture referenced 21 passages

The passage this message was preached from, in full, with every other passage it reached for.

  • Ephesians 5:15-21 main text read aloud in full at the start of the sermon

    15 Therefore watch carefully how you walk, not as unwise, but as wise;

    16 redeeming the time, because the days are evil.

    17 Therefore don’t be foolish, but understand what the will of the Lord is.

    18 Don’t be drunken with wine, in which is dissipation, but be filled with the Spirit,

    19 speaking to one another in psalms, hymns, and spiritual songs; singing, and making melody in your heart to the Lord;

    20 giving thanks always concerning all things in the name of our Lord Jesus Christ, to God, even the Father;

    21 subjecting yourselves to one another in the fear of Christ.

James 1

if any lacks wisdom, ask God and it will be given

1 James, a servant of God and of the Lord Jesus Christ, to the twelve tribes which are in the Dispersion: Greetings.

2 Count it all joy, my brothers, when you fall into various temptations,

3 knowing that the testing of your faith produces endurance.

4 Let endurance have its perfect work, that you may be perfect and complete, lacking in nothing.

5 But if any of you lacks wisdom, let him ask of God, who gives to all liberally and without reproach; and it will be given to him.

6 But let him ask in faith, without any doubting, for he who doubts is like a wave of the sea, driven by the wind and tossed.

7 For that man shouldn’t think that he will receive anything from the Lord.

8 He is a double-minded man, unstable in all his ways.

9 But let the brother in humble circumstances glory in his high position;

10 and the rich, in that he is made humble, because like the flower in the grass, he will pass away.

11 For the sun arises with the scorching wind, and withers the grass, and the flower in it falls, and the beauty of its appearance perishes. So also will the rich man fade away in his pursuits.

12 Blessed is the man who endures temptation, for when he has been approved, he will receive the crown of life, which the Lord promised to those who love him.

13 Let no man say when he is tempted, “I am tempted by God,” for God can’t be tempted by evil, and he himself tempts no one.

14 But each one is tempted when he is drawn away by his own lust, and enticed.

15 Then the lust, when it has conceived, bears sin; and the sin, when it is full grown, produces death.

16 Don’t be deceived, my beloved brothers.

17 Every good gift and every perfect gift is from above, coming down from the Father of lights, with whom can be no variation, nor turning shadow.

18 Of his own will he gave birth to us by the word of truth, that we should be a kind of first fruits of his creatures.

19 So, then, my beloved brothers, let every man be swift to hear, slow to speak, and slow to anger;

20 for the anger of man doesn’t produce the righteousness of God.

21 Therefore, putting away all filthiness and overflowing of wickedness, receive with humility the implanted word, which is able to save your souls.

22 But be doers of the word, and not only hearers, deluding your own selves.

23 For if anyone is a hearer of the word and not a doer, he is like a man looking at his natural face in a mirror;

24 for he sees himself, and goes away, and immediately forgets what kind of man he was.

25 But he who looks into the perfect law of freedom, and continues, not being a hearer who forgets, but a doer of the work, this man will be blessed in what he does.

26 If anyone among you thinks himself to be religious while he doesn’t bridle his tongue, but deceives his heart, this man’s religion is worthless.

27 Pure religion and undefiled before our God and Father is this: to visit the fatherless and widows in their affliction, and to keep oneself unstained by the world.

Paul prays for the spirit of wisdom and revelation in the knowledge of God

1 Paul, an apostle of Christ Jesus through the will of God, to the saints who are at Ephesus, and the faithful in Christ Jesus:

2 Grace to you and peace from God our Father and the Lord Jesus Christ.

3 Blessed be the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, who has blessed us with every spiritual blessing in the heavenly places in Christ;

4 even as he chose us in him before the foundation of the world, that we would be holy and without defect before him in love;

5 having predestined us for adoption as children through Jesus Christ to himself, according to the good pleasure of his desire,

6 to the praise of the glory of his grace, by which he freely gave us favor in the Beloved,

7 in whom we have our redemption through his blood, the forgiveness of our trespasses, according to the riches of his grace,

8 which he made to abound toward us in all wisdom and prudence,

9 making known to us the mystery of his will, according to his good pleasure which he purposed in him

10 to an administration of the fullness of the times, to sum up all things in Christ, the things in the heavens, and the things on the earth, in him;

11 in whom also we were assigned an inheritance, having been foreordained according to the purpose of him who does all things after the counsel of his will;

12 to the end that we should be to the praise of his glory, we who had before hoped in Christ.

13 In him you also, having heard the word of the truth, the Good News of your salvation—in whom, having also believed, you were sealed with the promised Holy Spirit,

14 who is a pledge of our inheritance, to the redemption of God’s own possession, to the praise of his glory.

15 For this cause I also, having heard of the faith in the Lord Jesus which is among you, and the love which you have toward all the saints,

16 don’t cease to give thanks for you, making mention of you in my prayers,

17 that the God of our Lord Jesus Christ, the Father of glory, may give to you a spirit of wisdom and revelation in the knowledge of him;

18 having the eyes of your hearts enlightened, that you may know what is the hope of his calling, and what are the riches of the glory of his inheritance in the saints,

19 and what is the exceeding greatness of his power toward us who believe, according to that working of the strength of his might

20 which he worked in Christ, when he raised him from the dead, and made him to sit at his right hand in the heavenly places,

21 far above all rule, and authority, and power, and dominion, and every name that is named, not only in this age, but also in that which is to come.

22 He put all things in subjection under his feet, and gave him to be head over all things for the assembly,

23 which is his body, the fullness of him who fills all in all.

James 3

wisdom from above is first pure, then peaceable, gentle, open to reason, full of mercy

1 Let not many of you be teachers, my brothers, knowing that we will receive heavier judgment.

2 For in many things we all stumble. If anyone doesn’t stumble in word, the same is a perfect man, able to bridle the whole body also.

3 Indeed, we put bits into the horses’ mouths so that they may obey us, and we guide their whole body.

4 Behold, the ships also, though they are so big and are driven by fierce winds, are yet guided by a very small rudder, wherever the pilot desires.

5 So the tongue is also a little member, and boasts great things. See how a small fire can spread to a large forest!

6 And the tongue is a fire. The world of iniquity among our members is the tongue, which defiles the whole body, and sets on fire the course of nature, and is set on fire by Gehenna.

7 For every kind of animal, bird, creeping thing, and sea creature, is tamed, and has been tamed by mankind;

8 but nobody can tame the tongue. It is a restless evil, full of deadly poison.

9 With it we bless our God and Father, and with it we curse men, who are made in the image of God.

10 Out of the same mouth comes blessing and cursing. My brothers, these things ought not to be so.

11 Does a spring send out from the same opening fresh and bitter water?

12 Can a fig tree, my brothers, yield olives, or a vine figs? Thus no spring yields both salt water and fresh water.

13 Who is wise and understanding among you? Let him show by his good conduct that his deeds are done in gentleness of wisdom.

14 But if you have bitter jealousy and selfish ambition in your heart, don’t boast and don’t lie against the truth.

15 This wisdom is not that which comes down from above, but is earthly, sensual, and demonic.

16 For where jealousy and selfish ambition are, there is confusion and every evil deed.

17 But the wisdom that is from above is first pure, then peaceful, gentle, reasonable, full of mercy and good fruits, without partiality, and without hypocrisy.

18 Now the fruit of righteousness is sown in peace by those who make peace.

1 Thessalonians 4

the will of God is your sanctification and abstinence

1 Finally then, brothers, we beg and exhort you in the Lord Jesus, that as you received from us how you ought to walk and to please God, that you abound more and more.

2 For you know what instructions we gave you through the Lord Jesus.

3 For this is the will of God: your sanctification, that you abstain from sexual immorality,

4 that each one of you know how to control his own body in sanctification and honor,

5 not in the passion of lust, even as the Gentiles who don’t know God;

6 that no one should take advantage of and wrong a brother or sister in this matter; because the Lord is an avenger in all these things, as also we forewarned you and testified.

7 For God called us not for uncleanness, but in sanctification.

8 Therefore he who rejects this doesn’t reject man, but God, who has also given his Holy Spirit to you.

9 But concerning brotherly love, you have no need that one write to you. For you yourselves are taught by God to love one another,

10 for indeed you do it toward all the brothers who are in all Macedonia. But we exhort you, brothers, that you abound more and more;

11 and that you make it your ambition to lead a quiet life, and to do your own business, and to work with your own hands, even as we instructed you;

12 that you may walk properly toward those who are outside, and may have need of nothing.

13 But we don’t want you to be ignorant, brothers, concerning those who have fallen asleep, so that you don’t grieve like the rest, who have no hope.

14 For if we believe that Jesus died and rose again, even so God will bring with him those who have fallen asleep in Jesus.

15 For this we tell you by the word of the Lord, that we who are alive, who are left until the coming of the Lord, will in no way precede those who have fallen asleep.

16 For the Lord himself will descend from heaven with a shout, with the voice of the archangel, and with God’s trumpet. The dead in Christ will rise first,

17 then we who are alive, who are left, will be caught up together with them in the clouds, to meet the Lord in the air. So we will be with the Lord forever.

18 Therefore comfort one another with these words.

1 Peter 4

the will of God is to live no longer for human passions

1 Therefore, since Christ suffered for us in the flesh, arm yourselves also with the same mind; for he who has suffered in the flesh has ceased from sin;

2 that you no longer should live the rest of your time in the flesh for the lusts of men, but for the will of God.

3 For we have spent enough of our past time doing the desire of the Gentiles, and having walked in lewdness, lusts, drunken binges, orgies, carousings, and abominable idolatries.

4 They think it is strange that you don’t run with them into the same excess of riot, blaspheming:

5 who will give account to him who is ready to judge the living and the dead.

6 For to this end the Good News was preached even to the dead, that they might be judged indeed as men in the flesh, but live as to God in the spirit.

7 But the end of all things is near. Therefore be of sound mind, self-controlled, and sober in prayer.

8 And above all things be earnest in your love among yourselves, for love covers a multitude of sins.

9 Be hospitable to one another without grumbling.

10 As each has received a gift, employ it in serving one another, as good managers of the grace of God in its various forms.

11 If anyone speaks, let it be as it were the very words of God. If anyone serves, let it be as of the strength which God supplies, that in all things God may be glorified through Jesus Christ, to whom belong the glory and the dominion forever and ever. Amen.

12 Beloved, don’t be astonished at the fiery trial which has come upon you, to test you, as though a strange thing happened to you.

13 But because you are partakers of Christ’s sufferings, rejoice; that at the revelation of his glory you also may rejoice with exceeding joy.

14 If you are insulted for the name of Christ, you are blessed; because the Spirit of glory and of God rests on you. On their part he is blasphemed, but on your part he is glorified.

15 For let none of you suffer as a murderer, or a thief, or an evil doer, or a meddler in other men’s matters.

16 But if one of you suffers for being a Christian, let him not be ashamed; but let him glorify God in this matter.

17 For the time has come for judgment to begin with the household of God. If it begins first with us, what will happen to those who don’t obey the Good News of God?

18 “If it is hard for the righteous to be saved, what will happen to the ungodly and the sinner?”

19 Therefore let them also who suffer according to the will of God in doing good entrust their souls to him, as to a faithful Creator.

Romans 12

be transformed by the renewing of your mind to discern the will of God

1 Therefore I urge you, brothers, by the mercies of God, to present your bodies a living sacrifice, holy, acceptable to God, which is your spiritual service.

2 Don’t be conformed to this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind, so that you may prove what is the good, well-pleasing, and perfect will of God.

3 For I say, through the grace that was given me, to every man who is among you, not to think of himself more highly than he ought to think; but to think reasonably, as God has apportioned to each person a measure of faith.

4 For even as we have many members in one body, and all the members don’t have the same function,

5 so we, who are many, are one body in Christ, and individually members one of another.

6 Having gifts differing according to the grace that was given to us, if prophecy, let us prophesy according to the proportion of our faith;

7 or service, let us give ourselves to service; or he who teaches, to his teaching;

8 or he who exhorts, to his exhorting: he who gives, let him do it with generosity; he who rules, with diligence; he who shows mercy, with cheerfulness.

9 Let love be without hypocrisy. Abhor that which is evil. Cling to that which is good.

10 In love of the brothers be tenderly affectionate to one another; in honor preferring one another;

11 not lagging in diligence; fervent in spirit; serving the Lord;

12 rejoicing in hope; enduring in troubles; continuing steadfastly in prayer;

13 contributing to the needs of the saints; given to hospitality.

14 Bless those who persecute you; bless, and don’t curse.

15 Rejoice with those who rejoice. Weep with those who weep.

16 Be of the same mind one toward another. Don’t set your mind on high things, but associate with the humble. Don’t be wise in your own conceits.

17 Repay no one evil for evil. Respect what is honorable in the sight of all men.

18 If it is possible, as much as it is up to you, be at peace with all men.

19 Don’t seek revenge yourselves, beloved, but give place to God’s wrath. For it is written, “Vengeance belongs to me; I will repay, says the Lord.”

20 Therefore “If your enemy is hungry, feed him. If he is thirsty, give him a drink; for in doing so, you will heap coals of fire on his head.”

21 Don’t be overcome by evil, but overcome evil with good.

abide in the vine, the Father is glorified by bearing much fruit

1 “I am the true vine, and my Father is the farmer.

2 Every branch in me that doesn’t bear fruit, he takes away. Every branch that bears fruit, he prunes, that it may bear more fruit.

3 You are already pruned clean because of the word which I have spoken to you.

4 Remain in me, and I in you. As the branch can’t bear fruit by itself, unless it remains in the vine, so neither can you, unless you remain in me.

5 I am the vine. You are the branches. He who remains in me, and I in him, the same bears much fruit, for apart from me you can do nothing.

6 If a man doesn’t remain in me, he is thrown out as a branch, and is withered; and they gather them, throw them into the fire, and they are burned.

7 If you remain in me, and my words remain in you, you will ask whatever you desire, and it will be done for you.

8 “In this is my Father glorified, that you bear much fruit; and so you will be my disciples.

9 Even as the Father has loved me, I also have loved you. Remain in my love.

10 If you keep my commandments, you will remain in my love; even as I have kept my Father’s commandments, and remain in his love.

11 I have spoken these things to you, that my joy may remain in you, and that your joy may be made full.

12 “This is my commandment, that you love one another, even as I have loved you.

13 Greater love has no one than this, that someone lay down his life for his friends.

14 You are my friends, if you do whatever I command you.

15 No longer do I call you servants, for the servant doesn’t know what his lord does. But I have called you friends, for everything that I heard from my Father, I have made known to you.

16 You didn’t choose me, but I chose you, and appointed you, that you should go and bear fruit, and that your fruit should remain; that whatever you will ask of the Father in my name, he may give it to you.

17 “I command these things to you, that you may love one another.

18 If the world hates you, you know that it has hated me before it hated you.

19 If you were of the world, the world would love its own. But because you are not of the world, since I chose you out of the world, therefore the world hates you.

20 Remember the word that I said to you: ‘A servant is not greater than his lord.’ If they persecuted me, they will also persecute you. If they kept my word, they will also keep yours.

21 But all these things will they do to you for my name’s sake, because they don’t know him who sent me.

22 If I had not come and spoken to them, they would not have had sin; but now they have no excuse for their sin.

23 He who hates me, hates my Father also.

24 If I hadn’t done among them the works which no one else did, they wouldn’t have had sin. But now have they seen and also hated both me and my Father.

25 But this happened so that the word may be fulfilled which was written in their law, ‘They hated me without a cause.’

26 “When the Counselor has come, whom I will send to you from the Father, the Spirit of truth, who proceeds from the Father, he will testify about me.

27 You will also testify, because you have been with me from the beginning.

Matthew 28

go and make disciples of all nations, baptizing and teaching

1 Now after the Sabbath, as it began to dawn on the first day of the week, Mary Magdalene and the other Mary came to see the tomb.

2 Behold, there was a great earthquake, for an angel of the Lord descended from the sky, and came and rolled away the stone from the door, and sat on it.

3 His appearance was like lightning, and his clothing white as snow.

4 For fear of him, the guards shook, and became like dead men.

5 The angel answered the women, “Don’t be afraid, for I know that you seek Jesus, who has been crucified.

6 He is not here, for he has risen, just like he said. Come, see the place where the Lord was lying.

7 Go quickly and tell his disciples, ‘He has risen from the dead, and behold, he goes before you into Galilee; there you will see him.’ Behold, I have told you.”

8 They departed quickly from the tomb with fear and great joy, and ran to bring his disciples word.

9 As they went to tell his disciples, behold, Jesus met them, saying, “Rejoice!” They came and took hold of his feet, and worshiped him.

10 Then Jesus said to them, “Don’t be afraid. Go tell my brothers that they should go into Galilee, and there they will see me.”

11 Now while they were going, behold, some of the guards came into the city, and told the chief priests all the things that had happened.

12 When they were assembled with the elders, and had taken counsel, they gave a large amount of silver to the soldiers,

13 saying, “Say that his disciples came by night, and stole him away while we slept.

14 If this comes to the governor’s ears, we will persuade him and make you free of worry.”

15 So they took the money and did as they were told. This saying was spread abroad among the Jews, and continues until today.

16 But the eleven disciples went into Galilee, to the mountain where Jesus had sent them.

17 When they saw him, they bowed down to him, but some doubted.

18 Jesus came to them and spoke to them, saying, “All authority has been given to me in heaven and on earth.

19 Go and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit,

20 teaching them to observe all things that I commanded you. Behold, I am with you always, even to the end of the age.” Amen.

Matthew 10

do not fear those who can only kill the body, fear God who can destroy both body and soul

1 He called to himself his twelve disciples, and gave them authority over unclean spirits, to cast them out, and to heal every disease and every sickness.

2 Now the names of the twelve apostles are these. The first, Simon, who is called Peter; Andrew, his brother; James the son of Zebedee; John, his brother;

3 Philip; Bartholomew; Thomas; Matthew the tax collector; James the son of Alphaeus; Lebbaeus, who was also called Thaddaeus;

4 Simon the Canaanite; and Judas Iscariot, who also betrayed him.

5 Jesus sent these twelve out, and commanded them, saying, “Don’t go among the Gentiles, and don’t enter into any city of the Samaritans.

6 Rather, go to the lost sheep of the house of Israel.

7 As you go, preach, saying, ‘The Kingdom of Heaven is at hand!’

8 Heal the sick, cleanse the lepers, and cast out demons. Freely you received, so freely give.

9 Don’t take any gold, silver, or brass in your money belts.

10 Take no bag for your journey, neither two coats, nor shoes, nor staff: for the laborer is worthy of his food.

11 Into whatever city or village you enter, find out who in it is worthy; and stay there until you go on.

12 As you enter into the household, greet it.

13 If the household is worthy, let your peace come on it, but if it isn’t worthy, let your peace return to you.

14 Whoever doesn’t receive you, nor hear your words, as you go out of that house or that city, shake the dust off your feet.

15 Most certainly I tell you, it will be more tolerable for the land of Sodom and Gomorrah in the day of judgment than for that city.

16 “Behold, I send you out as sheep among wolves. Therefore be wise as serpents, and harmless as doves.

17 But beware of men: for they will deliver you up to councils, and in their synagogues they will scourge you.

18 Yes, and you will be brought before governors and kings for my sake, for a testimony to them and to the nations.

19 But when they deliver you up, don’t be anxious how or what you will say, for it will be given you in that hour what you will say.

20 For it is not you who speak, but the Spirit of your Father who speaks in you.

21 “Brother will deliver up brother to death, and the father his child. Children will rise up against parents, and cause them to be put to death.

22 You will be hated by all men for my name’s sake, but he who endures to the end will be saved.

23 But when they persecute you in this city, flee into the next, for most certainly I tell you, you will not have gone through the cities of Israel, until the Son of Man has come.

24 “A disciple is not above his teacher, nor a servant above his lord.

25 It is enough for the disciple that he be like his teacher, and the servant like his lord. If they have called the master of the house Beelzebul, how much more those of his household!

26 Therefore don’t be afraid of them, for there is nothing covered that will not be revealed; and hidden that will not be known.

27 What I tell you in the darkness, speak in the light; and what you hear whispered in the ear, proclaim on the housetops.

28 Don’t be afraid of those who kill the body, but are not able to kill the soul. Rather, fear him who is able to destroy both soul and body in Gehenna.

29 “Aren’t two sparrows sold for an assarion coin? Not one of them falls on the ground apart from your Father’s will,

30 but the very hairs of your head are all numbered.

31 Therefore don’t be afraid. You are of more value than many sparrows.

32 Everyone therefore who confesses me before men, him I will also confess before my Father who is in heaven.

33 But whoever denies me before men, him I will also deny before my Father who is in heaven.

34 “Don’t think that I came to send peace on the earth. I didn’t come to send peace, but a sword.

35 For I came to set a man at odds against his father, and a daughter against her mother, and a daughter-in-law against her mother-in-law.

36 A man’s foes will be those of his own household.

37 He who loves father or mother more than me is not worthy of me; and he who loves son or daughter more than me isn’t worthy of me.

38 He who doesn’t take his cross and follow after me, isn’t worthy of me.

39 He who seeks his life will lose it; and he who loses his life for my sake will find it.

40 He who receives you receives me, and he who receives me receives him who sent me.

41 He who receives a prophet in the name of a prophet will receive a prophet’s reward. He who receives a righteous man in the name of a righteous man will receive a righteous man’s reward.

42 Whoever gives one of these little ones just a cup of cold water to drink in the name of a disciple, most certainly I tell you he will in no way lose his reward.”

Matthew 25

women at the tomb walked away in fear and joy

1 “Then the Kingdom of Heaven will be like ten virgins, who took their lamps, and went out to meet the bridegroom.

2 Five of them were foolish, and five were wise.

3 Those who were foolish, when they took their lamps, took no oil with them,

4 but the wise took oil in their vessels with their lamps.

5 Now while the bridegroom delayed, they all slumbered and slept.

6 But at midnight there was a cry, ‘Behold! The bridegroom is coming! Come out to meet him!’

7 Then all those virgins arose, and trimmed their lamps.

8 The foolish said to the wise, ‘Give us some of your oil, for our lamps are going out.’

9 But the wise answered, saying, ‘What if there isn’t enough for us and you? You go rather to those who sell, and buy for yourselves.’

10 While they went away to buy, the bridegroom came, and those who were ready went in with him to the marriage feast, and the door was shut.

11 Afterward the other virgins also came, saying, ‘Lord, Lord, open to us.’

12 But he answered, ‘Most certainly I tell you, I don’t know you.’

13 Watch therefore, for you don’t know the day nor the hour in which the Son of Man is coming.

14 “For it is like a man, going into another country, who called his own servants, and entrusted his goods to them.

15 To one he gave five talents, to another two, to another one; to each according to his own ability. Then he went on his journey.

16 Immediately he who received the five talents went and traded with them, and made another five talents.

17 In the same way, he also who got the two gained another two.

18 But he who received the one talent went away and dug in the earth, and hid his lord’s money.

19 “Now after a long time the lord of those servants came, and reconciled accounts with them.

20 He who received the five talents came and brought another five talents, saying, ‘Lord, you delivered to me five talents. Behold, I have gained another five talents besides them.’

21 “His lord said to him, ‘Well done, good and faithful servant. You have been faithful over a few things, I will set you over many things. Enter into the joy of your lord.’

22 “He also who got the two talents came and said, ‘Lord, you delivered to me two talents. Behold, I have gained another two talents besides them.’

23 “His lord said to him, ‘Well done, good and faithful servant. You have been faithful over a few things, I will set you over many things. Enter into the joy of your lord.’

24 “He also who had received the one talent came and said, ‘Lord, I knew you that you are a hard man, reaping where you did not sow, and gathering where you did not scatter.

25 I was afraid, and went away and hid your talent in the earth. Behold, you have what is yours.’

26 “But his lord answered him, ‘You wicked and slothful servant. You knew that I reap where I didn’t sow, and gather where I didn’t scatter.

27 You ought therefore to have deposited my money with the bankers, and at my coming I should have received back my own with interest.

28 Take away therefore the talent from him, and give it to him who has the ten talents.

29 For to everyone who has will be given, and he will have abundance, but from him who doesn’t have, even that which he has will be taken away.

30 Throw out the unprofitable servant into the outer darkness, where there will be weeping and gnashing of teeth.’

31 “But when the Son of Man comes in his glory, and all the holy angels with him, then he will sit on the throne of his glory.

32 Before him all the nations will be gathered, and he will separate them one from another, as a shepherd separates the sheep from the goats.

33 He will set the sheep on his right hand, but the goats on the left.

34 Then the King will tell those on his right hand, ‘Come, blessed of my Father, inherit the Kingdom prepared for you from the foundation of the world;

35 for I was hungry, and you gave me food to eat. I was thirsty, and you gave me drink. I was a stranger, and you took me in.

36 I was naked, and you clothed me. I was sick, and you visited me. I was in prison, and you came to me.’

37 “Then the righteous will answer him, saying, ‘Lord, when did we see you hungry, and feed you; or thirsty, and give you a drink?

38 When did we see you as a stranger, and take you in; or naked, and clothe you?

39 When did we see you sick, or in prison, and come to you?’

40 “The King will answer them, ‘Most certainly I tell you, because you did it to one of the least of these my brothers, you did it to me.’

41 Then he will say also to those on the left hand, ‘Depart from me, you cursed, into the eternal fire which is prepared for the devil and his angels;

42 for I was hungry, and you didn’t give me food to eat; I was thirsty, and you gave me no drink;

43 I was a stranger, and you didn’t take me in; naked, and you didn’t clothe me; sick, and in prison, and you didn’t visit me.’

44 “Then they will also answer, saying, ‘Lord, when did we see you hungry, or thirsty, or a stranger, or naked, or sick, or in prison, and didn’t help you?’

45 “Then he will answer them, saying, ‘Most certainly I tell you, because you didn’t do it to one of the least of these, you didn’t do it to me.’

46 These will go away into eternal punishment, but the righteous into eternal life.”

Acts 5

Ananias and Sapphira lied about land sale, God struck them dead, great fear fell on the church

1 But a certain man named Ananias, with Sapphira, his wife, sold a possession,

2 and kept back part of the price, his wife also being aware of it, and brought a certain part, and laid it at the apostles’ feet.

3 But Peter said, “Ananias, why has Satan filled your heart to lie to the Holy Spirit, and to keep back part of the price of the land?

4 While you kept it, didn’t it remain your own? After it was sold, wasn’t it in your power? How is it that you have conceived this thing in your heart? You haven’t lied to men, but to God.”

5 Ananias, hearing these words, fell down and died. Great fear came on all who heard these things.

6 The young men arose and wrapped him up, and they carried him out and buried him.

7 About three hours later, his wife, not knowing what had happened, came in.

8 Peter answered her, “Tell me whether you sold the land for so much.” She said, “Yes, for so much.”

9 But Peter asked her, “How is it that you have agreed together to tempt the Spirit of the Lord? Behold, the feet of those who have buried your husband are at the door, and they will carry you out.”

10 She fell down immediately at his feet, and died. The young men came in and found her dead, and they carried her out and buried her by her husband.

11 Great fear came on the whole assembly, and on all who heard these things.

12 By the hands of the apostles many signs and wonders were done among the people. They were all with one accord in Solomon’s porch.

13 None of the rest dared to join them, however the people honored them.

14 More believers were added to the Lord, multitudes of both men and women.

15 They even carried out the sick into the streets, and laid them on cots and mattresses, so that as Peter came by, at the least his shadow might overshadow some of them.

16 The multitude also came together from the cities around Jerusalem, bringing sick people, and those who were tormented by unclean spirits: and they were all healed.

17 But the high priest rose up, and all those who were with him (which is the sect of the Sadducees), and they were filled with jealousy,

18 and laid hands on the apostles, and put them in public custody.

19 But an angel of the Lord opened the prison doors by night, and brought them out, and said,

20 “Go stand and speak in the temple to the people all the words of this life.”

21 When they heard this, they entered into the temple about daybreak, and taught. But the high priest came, and those who were with him, and called the council together, and all the senate of the children of Israel, and sent to the prison to have them brought.

22 But the officers who came didn’t find them in the prison. They returned and reported,

23 “We found the prison shut and locked, and the guards standing before the doors, but when we opened them, we found no one inside!”

24 Now when the high priest, the captain of the temple, and the chief priests heard these words, they were very perplexed about them and what might become of this.

25 One came and told them, “Behold, the men whom you put in prison are in the temple, standing and teaching the people.”

26 Then the captain went with the officers, and brought them without violence, for they were afraid that the people might stone them.

27 When they had brought them, they set them before the council. The high priest questioned them,

28 saying, “Didn’t we strictly command you not to teach in this name? Behold, you have filled Jerusalem with your teaching, and intend to bring this man’s blood on us.”

29 But Peter and the apostles answered, “We must obey God rather than men.

30 The God of our fathers raised up Jesus, whom you killed, hanging him on a tree.

31 God exalted him with his right hand to be a Prince and a Savior, to give repentance to Israel, and remission of sins.

32 We are His witnesses of these things; and so also is the Holy Spirit, whom God has given to those who obey him.”

33 But they, when they heard this, were cut to the heart, and were determined to kill them.

34 But one stood up in the council, a Pharisee named Gamaliel, a teacher of the law, honored by all the people, and commanded to put the apostles out for a little while.

35 He said to them, “You men of Israel, be careful concerning these men, what you are about to do.

36 For before these days Theudas rose up, making himself out to be somebody; to whom a number of men, about four hundred, joined themselves: who was slain; and all, as many as obeyed him, were dispersed, and came to nothing.

37 After this man, Judas of Galilee rose up in the days of the enrollment, and drew away some people after him. He also perished, and all, as many as obeyed him, were scattered abroad.

38 Now I tell you, withdraw from these men, and leave them alone. For if this counsel or this work is of men, it will be overthrown.

39 But if it is of God, you will not be able to overthrow it, and you would be found even to be fighting against God!”

40 They agreed with him. Summoning the apostles, they beat them and commanded them not to speak in the name of Jesus, and let them go.

41 They therefore departed from the presence of the council, rejoicing that they were counted worthy to suffer dishonor for Jesus’ name.

42 Every day, in the temple and at home, they never stopped teaching and preaching Jesus, the Christ.

Acts 9

the church had peace walking in the fear of the Lord and comfort of the Holy Spirit

1 But Saul, still breathing threats and slaughter against the disciples of the Lord, went to the high priest,

2 and asked for letters from him to the synagogues of Damascus, that if he found any who were of the Way, whether men or women, he might bring them bound to Jerusalem.

3 As he traveled, he got close to Damascus, and suddenly a light from the sky shone around him.

4 He fell on the earth, and heard a voice saying to him, “Saul, Saul, why do you persecute me?”

5 He said, “Who are you, Lord?” The Lord said, “I am Jesus, whom you are persecuting.

6 But rise up, and enter into the city, and you will be told what you must do.”

7 The men who traveled with him stood speechless, hearing the sound, but seeing no one.

8 Saul arose from the ground, and when his eyes were opened, he saw no one. They led him by the hand, and brought him into Damascus.

9 He was without sight for three days, and neither ate nor drank.

10 Now there was a certain disciple at Damascus named Ananias. The Lord said to him in a vision, “Ananias!” He said, “Behold, it’s me, Lord.”

11 The Lord said to him, “Arise, and go to the street which is called Straight, and inquire in the house of Judah for one named Saul, a man of Tarsus. For behold, he is praying,

12 and in a vision he has seen a man named Ananias coming in, and laying his hands on him, that he might receive his sight.”

13 But Ananias answered, “Lord, I have heard from many about this man, how much evil he did to your saints at Jerusalem.

14 Here he has authority from the chief priests to bind all who call on your name.”

15 But the Lord said to him, “Go your way, for he is my chosen vessel to bear my name before the nations and kings, and the children of Israel.

16 For I will show him how many things he must suffer for my name’s sake.”

17 Ananias departed, and entered into the house. Laying his hands on him, he said, “Brother Saul, the Lord, who appeared to you on the road by which you came, has sent me, that you may receive your sight, and be filled with the Holy Spirit.”

18 Immediately something like scales fell from his eyes, and he received his sight. He arose and was baptized.

19 He took food and was strengthened. Saul stayed several days with the disciples who were at Damascus.

20 Immediately in the synagogues he proclaimed the Christ, that he is the Son of God.

21 All who heard him were amazed, and said, “Isn’t this he who in Jerusalem made havoc of those who called on this name? And he had come here intending to bring them bound before the chief priests!”

22 But Saul increased more in strength, and confounded the Jews who lived at Damascus, proving that this is the Christ.

23 When many days were fulfilled, the Jews conspired together to kill him,

24 but their plot became known to Saul. They watched the gates both day and night that they might kill him,

25 but his disciples took him by night, and let him down through the wall, lowering him in a basket.

26 When Saul had come to Jerusalem, he tried to join himself to the disciples; but they were all afraid of him, not believing that he was a disciple.

27 But Barnabas took him, and brought him to the apostles, and declared to them how he had seen the Lord on the way, and that he had spoken to him, and how at Damascus he had preached boldly in the name of Jesus.

28 He was with them entering into Jerusalem,

29 preaching boldly in the name of the Lord Jesus. He spoke and disputed against the Hellenists, but they were seeking to kill him.

30 When the brothers knew it, they brought him down to Caesarea, and sent him off to Tarsus.

31 So the assemblies throughout all Judea and Galilee and Samaria had peace, and were built up. They were multiplied, walking in the fear of the Lord and in the comfort of the Holy Spirit.

32 As Peter went throughout all those parts, he came down also to the saints who lived at Lydda.

33 There he found a certain man named Aeneas, who had been bedridden for eight years, because he was paralyzed.

34 Peter said to him, “Aeneas, Jesus Christ heals you. Get up and make your bed!” Immediately he arose.

35 All who lived at Lydda and in Sharon saw him, and they turned to the Lord.

36 Now there was at Joppa a certain disciple named Tabitha, which when translated, means Dorcas. This woman was full of good works and acts of mercy which she did.

37 In those days, she became sick, and died. When they had washed her, they laid her in an upper room.

38 As Lydda was near Joppa, the disciples, hearing that Peter was there, sent two men to him, imploring him not to delay in coming to them.

39 Peter got up and went with them. When he had come, they brought him into the upper room. All the widows stood by him weeping, and showing the coats and garments which Dorcas had made while she was with them.

40 Peter sent them all out, and knelt down and prayed. Turning to the body, he said, “Tabitha, get up!” She opened her eyes, and when she saw Peter, she sat up.

41 He gave her his hand, and raised her up. Calling the saints and widows, he presented her alive.

42 And it became known throughout all Joppa, and many believed in the Lord.

43 He stayed many days in Joppa with a tanner named Simon.

Recap

The message in order, in a few minutes of reading.

Pastor Josh walked through Ephesians 5:15-21, continuing the church's series in Ephesians. The passage shifts from the earlier chapters' teaching on who believers are in Christ into what that identity looks like on the ground, in daily life. The sermon traced four ways the text calls followers of Christ to walk: wisely, diligently, on course, and filled with the Spirit.

What was said

The opening point came straight from verse 15: pay careful attention to how you walk, not as unwise but as wise. Pastor Josh was clear that wisdom is not the same thing as experience or gray hair. Biblical wisdom runs against the grain of a culture that lets emotion and desire drive decisions without asking what Scripture says. The good news, he noted, is that James promises wisdom is available to anyone who asks God for it.

From there he moved to the phrase "making the most of the time" in verse 16, and paused on the Greek word used there, kairos, which carries the sense of a season or a window of conditions ripe for action. His point was that the season between Christ's resurrection and his return is exactly that kind of window. Believers who understand this will be looking for opportunities to act, to speak truth, to pray for a suffering brother or sister, rather than coasting through life as if nothing is at stake.

Verse 17 introduces the command to understand the Lord's will, and Pastor Josh pushed back on the idea that God's will is mysterious or inaccessible. He walked through several passages that state the will of God plainly, including sanctification, thankfulness, living no longer for human passions, and the Great Commission. Not knowing what is plainly written, he said, is just foolishness.

The center of the passage, and the center of the sermon, was the command to be filled with the Spirit. Pastor Josh noted that the verb is a present active form, pointing to something ongoing rather than a one-time event. He laid the contrast between drunkenness and being filled side by side: one takes control to destroy, the other to transform; one leads to reckless living and morning regret, the other to new mercies and clarity.

The participles that follow the main verb each received attention. Speaking and singing to one another in psalms, hymns, and spiritual songs is not just private worship but addressing each other in truth, which is part of what the congregation does together on a Sunday morning. He was candid that he cannot sing well, but his point was that the command is not about ability.

On giving thanks for all things to God the Father, Pastor Josh admitted this was the hardest piece to sit with. He distinguished it from giving thanks in all circumstances, noting that Paul says here to be thankful for everything, good and bad. He tied it to trusting the Father's goodness and power, and to an honest reckoning with what we actually deserve, which makes gratitude for anything, even hard things, more genuine rather than less.

The final participle, submitting to one another in the fear of Christ, brought the sermon to its close. Pastor Josh grounded mutual submission in the example of Jesus, who submitted himself to the Father's will, took on human life alongside sinful people, and went to the cross as a servant bearing the wrath owed to others. If submission is hard, he said, it helps to remember whose we are and what we are here for. He held the fear of Christ alongside the comfort of the Holy Spirit, drawing on examples from Matthew and Acts to show that Christian life holds both together, and circling back to where he started: the fear of the Lord is the beginning of wisdom.

Doing a Bible study?

Here is a guide we have prepared for you: the passages in order, questions for the group, and room to write.

  1. The pastor talked about how worldly wisdom and biblical wisdom often point in opposite directions, and he used his family's decision to leave home and move to Alaska as an example. When have you felt that tension between what the world called sensible and what you believed God was calling you to do?
  2. The sermon drew a distinction between kronos, clock time, and kairos, a season ripe for action. What does a season that is ripe for action look like in your own life right now, and what might it look like to actually purchase that time rather than let it pass?

and 3 more questions in the guide

0:00 You can have a seat? Good morning, everybody. Man, what a great start to to this morning with a baptism. If you haven't been baptized, we can schedule it out or we can have a baptism every Sunday, right? Wouldn't that be awesome?
0:41 Yes. Alright. Josh is pulling up the slides. We're going be in Ephesians five. We're going to be continuing on where we've been in Ephesians for, I don't know, many weeks and it's so good.
0:54 I I was talking to Ray earlier this week and every every week, he's so excited about. He's just like, the text is just, it's so good and I'm like, it is so good and I get to again, I I got to hang out in Ephesians three where Paul is praying for us and this text is more application. So, we've seen in the beginning where we are hearing from Paul about who God is and who we are in Christ and the amazing benefit that we have in Christ and now in in these later chapters is really application heavy and hey, because you're in Christ, act this way, do this, do that, and so if you if you don't have the context of the beginning of Ephesians, it sounds like really legalistic, you know, but it's not. So, we can't read through it all because I have way too much that I've planned to talk about. So, we will just start off It's not working.
1:57 Oh, you did it for me. Thank you. Alright. So, the context verse eight talks about walking as children of light. We're we were once in the darkness but as the follower of Christ, we are children of light and so there's this the the picture that's not my picture.
2:16 I've put a little website there if you want to, you know, check it out but we can partner with darkness. That's what we just were talking about. That remember that slide from from last week, all those things and some, we all struggle with some of those. At least one of those, right? We can partner with those things, partner with darkness, or we can partner with the light.
2:36 So, we have this opportunity to understand whose we are in Christ and let that impact how we live our life And then the last awake, rise from the dead, and Christ will shine on you. Do want me to just pretend like I have the clicker? Like, I'm ready for the next one. Thank you. Alright.
2:57 So, we don't always do this but we already did something this morning that's not normal with the so I invite you to stand in reverence of the reading of God's word. So, Ephesians five fifteen, pay careful attention then to how you walk, not as unwise people but as wise, making the most of the time because the days are evil. So don't be foolish but understand what the Lord's will is and don't get drunk with wine which leads to reckless living but be filled by the spirit speaking to one another in psalms, hymns, and spiritual songs, singing, and making music with your heart to the Lord, giving thanks always for everything to God the father. In the name of our Lord Jesus Christ, submitting to one another in the fear of Christ. This is the word of the Lord.
3:45 You may be seated. Thank you. Alright. So, this whole paragraph is from this first sentence and which points back to where we're at last week. Pay careful attention then or therefore, pay careful attention to how you walk, how you walk.
4:06 And so today, we're going to be talking about because we follow Christ, because we are now children of light and not darkness, pay careful attention, slow down, think, have caution in how you walk. And you could say don't waste your life. That's kind of what came to my mind. There's three like positive, negative commands or it's actually negative and then the positive, but I added a fourth one in there. Walk diligently is kind of a sub point of walk wisely.
4:43 So this is kind of where we're headed today. The first one is not as unwise people, but as wise. So walk wisely. Walk wisely. That's in Chamonix.
4:58 I just threw it in there because I'm thinking there there is a climber that I'd met who was using this really old soft gear one day, not on this trip, but he was like, man, I've been doing this for thirty years using old stuff. And I was like, well, you might have been doing that for thirty years the wrong way. You know, like, I hate to tell you, but but there's wisdom and when you're when you're climbing or walking or or whatever and it and you don't just stumble into it. Like, I'm starting to get some gray hairs, but I'm not wise. I'm not I could be like, the amount of gray hair I have could could help me understand, you know, how much experience I have, but not how much biblical wisdom I have.
5:42 Right? Like, Timothy was a a younger guy, but I bet he was wiser than than me even if he was younger. So just a little a little bit on wisdom. There could be a whole sermon on wisdom and stuff and and some other things too and so I I'm not doing the doing it justice. We could we could hang out here for a long time but each each of these points, I kind of give an antonym.
6:07 So, unwise, it's an obvious antonym. Foolish, worldly wisdom, worldly wisdom would be an antonym to biblical wisdom. When when my wife and I went overseas, worldly wisdom said that's crazy. Like, you're wrecking your career. You're, you know, selling all your stuff.
6:27 The Andersons are moving into a camper. They're leaving their home. They're leaving family behind, which is an amazing opportunity for them to be near their family. They're dying to things of the world to go pursue what God has for them, to be a part of kingdom advancement in Alaska. Right?
6:48 The world would say, you're crazy. Like, you're going to go live and you're putting your family in this little camper or whatever. I don't know. Some people of the world probably think it's cool but alright, in inverted priorities and blindness, reckless living, those are all antonyms to walking in wisdom. But the good news is in James.
7:10 James is really encouraging. He says that we can pray for wisdom. If any of you lacks wisdom, ask God and it will be given to you. That's a promise for us and then in earlier in chapter one, here in Ephesians, Paul says, he prays for us to be given the spirit of wisdom and revelation in the knowledge of God. So, our our former walk and this kind of goes back to the we can partner with darkness or we can partner with light.
7:41 Our former walk was according to the ways of the world. But now, as followers of Christ, we're a new creation and we walk differently now. Our wisdom is impacted by that. In our culture today, I I find myself often saying, oh, I feel like going and doing this, or I feel like going to take this job or whatever. Like, I feel like this.
8:07 Y'all hear that all the time. Right? Like, our that's what we that's our language. Sometimes it really means you're I feel hungry, so I'm gonna go eat. Sometimes it it's I feel like this, but you're actually talking about how you think and process, but I think our culture today and I know and I'm in this camp, we will let our emotion and our desire make these decisions without taking the time to think, what does scripture say?
8:37 How can I be wise in this choice? If I if I struggle when I'm alone with a screen, how can I be wise and not put myself in a situation like that or or whatever the struggle is? I was talking to somebody this morning that had that struggle. Jeremiah seventeen nine says, the heart is deceitful above all things and desperately sick. Who can understand it?
9:02 So don't depend on that, right? Here's a few verses on wisdom. We don't we're not going to cover all of them, but one is the fear of the Lord is the beginning of wisdom, and we're going to circle back to fear of the Lord at the end. The fear of the Lord is wisdom and to turn away from evil is understanding. In James, wisdom from above is first pure, then peaceable, gentle, open to reason, full of mercy.
9:32 There's a lot there that we're not going to get into. So walk wisely. The next one is walk diligently. Like I said, it's kind of a sub point in in the text. So we walk.
9:45 We pay careful attention then to how you walk, not as unwise people but as wise, making the most of the time because the days are evil. This part to me, this is specifically the wisdom that he's talking about. You know, there's all kinds of categories of biblical wisdom, but being diligently, oh, that looks horrible. What happened? Okay.
10:13 There it is. There's my ugly slide. We I've had some issues with the slides. Ray was helping me out, but I don't know what happened. Okay.
10:19 It's okay. The antonym would be inefficient. So if you're diligent, the antonym would be inefficient. Other words would be squandering? Yeah.
10:34 Squandering. In my notes, says inefficient. They're both antonyms, careless, lazy, coasting, stumbling, stumbling through life. That's not diligent. There ten years ago, I wanted to climb the Grand, and it was a it was I feel like climbing the Grand sort of thing.
10:53 It wasn't a wise choice. You can be wise in how you do it, but I was this was just feeling it. So I put a note over at Lupin Meadows. Said, hey, if you want to go climb the Grand, call me and this guy from India was here to climb and he I shouldn't waste time telling the story but now I have to. His partner was sick and so we met at Dorning's and we talked about it and we got our equipment together and we hiked up, camped at the saddle, and then we kept going.
11:21 There's a storm that night. There's ice on the route. Look at the exposure. Like, this is a iPhone probably four or something, so it's not that great. Like, you could easily die.
11:33 One non diligent step, and you're like you're you're dead. Right? And I think blindness, days are evil, what's going on? What does Satan like to do? He likes for us to not think that that's our situation.
11:54 To be blind, to to not be children of light, to be partners with darkness, and we can just just slip. We give the devil a foothold. Boom. Oh, it's not that big of a deal. And I I was so convicted last week when Ray was talking about, you know, the crude joking and stuff and the the specific joke.
12:14 Like, I'm like, yeah. What am I doing? Like, that's a foothold, and he's helping us to recognize we shouldn't give that to Satan. We we need to see the dangers. And alright, so just to unpack making most of the time, there's that CSB.
12:34 There's a lot of different Bible translations. The word time is important to unpack. So kronos would be a Greek word for time. That's like, hey, what's the kronos? It's nine thirty eight.
12:49 Okay. That's not the same word. This is kairos, which is like more seasonal in nature. Sorry. I'm kind of sick today.
12:58 I almost I almost didn't get sick. I tried hard not to. Kairos is different. It's seasonal. This room gets seasonal more than anybody back home in Alabama.
13:11 Hey, it snowed a bunch. Like, it's time that the the conditions are perfect for action. What do we what's the action? Leave your job for the day. I'm sick.
13:24 I have to go shred powder. Like, that's the Kairos that we're taking advantage of. Or today, you know, the weather is supposed to be perfect conditions for first BBQ. We're going to set up a million tables and chairs and buy tons of food and and we're going to eat. It rained a little bit but hopefully, conditions are still perfect Or for mountain biking, whatever your thing is, right?
13:46 Like, we understand the conditions being perfect to take advantage, to take action. Alright. Now think about what is he saying, making the most of the time, making the most of the season. Christ has given us the opportunity to take advantage of the time. He has another translation says, purchase the he's telling us to purchase the time.
14:12 Jesus has redeemed us and has purchased us and has essentially purchased a season of life for us to live. If you're not a follower of Christ, I'm sorry. You're wasting your life. If you are a follower of Christ, you don't have to waste your life anymore. It's been redeemed.
14:35 And then also we live in this in between, like Jesus has rose from the grave. Right? And we live in this liminal season. We're talking about this in a small group, but liminal means it's just like in between time. From his ascension to when he returns.
14:53 This is a season. This is an opportunity for us to live. We don't know if he's coming back tomorrow. Right? We don't know how long like, life is a vapor.
15:02 Boom. But we right now are in a season where we can take advantage, take action of this perfect condition to know this is what the gospel is. Here's somebody that needs it or here's a brother in Christ or sister in Christ that's suffering and needs me to pray for him. I'm going to stop whatever the thing is, and I'm gonna take advantage of the time. Right?
15:28 There's another picture of, like, the shrewd merchant. Jesus has given us tons of talent or like spiritual money, right, and a money bag. And we're walking around and we see an opportunity. We purchase. Boom.
15:48 We take action. Boom. We speak truth. Boom. We get up in the morning.
15:53 We study the words, those in our minds so that we can take action when the perfect conditions arise. Everybody tracking with that? And it's similar to the parable of the talents when Jesus is talking about, don't just bury your talent. Hey, don't waste your life. Walk wisely.
16:09 Walk diligently, right? In 2021, we saw like record low interest rates, right? Thank God. I mean, I'm not a guru but we got to buy a house that year. It just happened.
16:23 We got back from overseas but a bunch of you or maybe not you but my neighbors back home, they were like, hey, I'm going to refinance my house and they refinanced. They jumped on this opportunity to refinance their house, keep their payment the same, and then they got like $80 out of their house for free, right? It's not for free. They paid for it somehow. But they took advantage of that season, and they jumped at the opportunity to purchase, and we should be looking for those opportunities.
16:54 Galatians six ten talks about take every opportunity to do good to one another. Right? Amen. Alright. And then the days are evil.
17:04 Temptation lurks around every corner. We've already kind of talked about this, and there's this inner battle between our spirit in us and our flesh. And when we let our flesh take control and we act on our feelings instead of in wisdom, then then we start slipping. I'm going to skip the priority walls analogy. Alright.
17:30 You can ask me about it later, though. Alright. So walk wisely, walk diligently, walk on course. Verse 17, so don't be foolish. He said, so because the days are evil, don't be foolish, but understand what the Lord's will is.
17:48 Oh, man. Now, it's messed up too, right? Walk on course. Don't be foolish so the negative is foolish. The antonym is to like not understanding or being off course to be lost.
18:03 So hopeless, ignorant, aimless, asleep or dead, misguided. So what's the Lord's will? That's another sermon. Right? What's the Lord's will?
18:21 Man, there's a lot in the Bible that directly says what the Lord's will is. And not knowing his will is foolishness. Sorry, this here, here we get this right. I keep messing with him. First Thessalonians four says, it says, the will of God is your sanctification and abstinence.
18:43 It's like it can't get any more clear. So, we know the will of God is our sanctification to look more and more like Jesus and our abstinence from the slide that we saw last week. Later in chapter five, he said, the will of God is to be thankful in all circumstances. We're going to get on that in the next slide. First Peter four, the will of God is to live for the rest of time in the flesh.
19:12 So, we have to live in the flesh but no longer for human passions like we were talking about that battle between the spirit and the flesh. And Romans 12 says, be transformed by the renewing of your mind. That by testing, you may discern what is the will of God, what is good and acceptable and perfect. These are like, this is like, what is the will of God? T ball verses.
19:41 It's like very clear, very clear. Colossians one nine through 10 says, we are praying that you may be filled with the knowledge of his will. So there's prayer involved in understanding God's will. In all wisdom, again, we just talked about wisdom and spiritual understanding. So as to walk or to live in a manner worthy of the Lord, fully pleasing to him, pleasing to God, like that's what we want, bearing fruit in every good work and increasing in the knowledge of God and I think we hit on this before in John 15 when Jesus is talking about abide in me, abide in the vine in in the vine, we are the branches.
20:27 He says, my father is glorified by this that you produce much fruit. So we know that bearing fruit is part of the will of God for us. And then Matthew 28, right before Jesus ascends, he gives a command. So in my mind, anything Jesus commands is probably like the will of God for us. Right?
20:46 We can agree with that. Jesus commands us, followers of Christ, his disciples, to go therefore and make disciples of all nations. And and then he says what? He says, baptizing them in the name of the father, son, and Holy Spirit, teaching them to observe all that I have commanded you. Does that mean we shouldn't baptize our local brothers and sisters?
21:14 No. But we should all take part somehow in the nations. We have a missions committee here. I didn't know if you knew that. And all of you are giving so much.
21:27 Like, I think I calculated right. Like 14% of our whole budget is going to global missions. That's yes. That's not normal. Like, at best, I think average is is somewhere in this range of five to 15 and but they split that down the half down the middle and half is going to local and half is but I'm pretty sure that all 14% of what I said is is to global missions and the missions committee is very intentional about where that money goes and and and getting to know these these missionaries and who they are and what they're doing, what their mission is, how does their goal and their theology align with what we believe.
22:11 Right? It's if you want to be a part of that, get with me, get with the office, like we want to help you get plugged in to obey this command. Knowing His will helps us to walk in the light. So walk wisely, walk diligently, walk on course, and then be filled with the spirit. That's the rest of the of the whole thing.
22:37 And don't get drunk with wine, which leads to reckless living. That's the third negative positive. But be filled by the spirit. Speaking to one another in psalms, hymns, and spiritual songs, singing, and making music with your heart to the Lord, giving thanks always for everything to God the father in the name of our Lord Jesus Christ, submitting to one another in the fear of Christ. So, the main verb there is filled, and I'm trying to be nerdy like Ray.
23:09 He's got this going on. What's the continual perfect verb? Present. Present active. Yeah.
23:16 That's what it is. When you're saved, you're filled. You're right then, you're filled with the spirit. But he says You're being filled. You're being filled.
23:25 Yeah. But he he said, so you're filled, but be filled. It's like both. So you you're filled with the spirit when you're saved, and then there's a constant being filled, being asking to be filled, praying for fullness. So then he's got five supporting participles.
23:43 Yeah? Yes. I like having you here. This is good. Speaking and singing and making music, giving thanks, submitting to one another.
23:55 Another one says, making noise, maybe, making music. Alright. Keep going. So, don't get drunk with wine which leads to reckless living but be filled by the spirit. This picture, I know we got to see a baptism this morning.
24:07 So awesome. Right? This is this is amazing. Another baptism. This I got to be baptized with this brother in on January twelve twenty fifteen, twenty sixteen, and he was a a Muslim background believer, and he would describe Islam is like, it only goes so it it it doesn't penetrate who you are.
24:28 It's like a shell of a of a religion. Okay? So he's been doing all these things and then and then he meets he has an encounter with Jesus and he describes it as it it penetrated who he was, and it totally changed his life. He's from Northern Sudan. And in that moment, I've never taken a picture that that you can almost see the spirit in there, like in him.
24:58 And he's still preaching God's word today. So, comparing contrast, and we're going to get more into that. But to compare and contrast, I thought this was interesting. The negative and positive. So, drunkenness versus being filled with the spirit.
25:16 One brings or they're both similar and that they both take control of you in different ways, right? Unfortunately, that's true with drunkenness but it's fortunately true with the spirit. One brings temporary change, Right? One brings eternal change. One brings confusion.
25:43 One brings clarity. One waste your life totally, leads to reckless living, and one transforms your life for good. One brings regret in the morning, more wastefulness, and one brings new mercies in the morning and understanding and wisdom and all these beautiful things. But for some reason, sometimes we are confused in in which way to go. Hey, this slide looks good.
26:17 Be filled with the spirit, speaking to one another in psalms, hymns, and spiritual songs, singing and making music with your heart to the Lord. But what if I'm not good at singing? Like I think that was you know disgust when they hired me like man can't really sing. So I don't know how it's going to go. It's true, I can't.
26:37 Is that a problem if we're called, if he's saying to sing to one another psalms and hymns and spiritual songs. Piper and all of us were doing chores this week our house and they were like, I hate chores. I hate cleaning. This is miserable. And I started singing.
26:58 Was like, take out the dishes to the water. Take out the trash, sweep the floor. That's my singing? I know, it's horrible. But they thought it's great, and they start singing, and we're dancing and doing chores and all of a sudden our whole mentality shifts and at the end she said, You know what dad?
27:16 It's way more fun to do chores when we're singing and dancing and it goes by faster. I was like, Yeah, there's something to that. But so these verbs speaking to one another in psalms, hymns, spiritual songs, and then singing and making music to the Lord, that's what we were doing this morning. When we worship together and we're singing together, we are addressing one another in truths. Some of these songs we sing, I wish I had a better memory because I'm as we're singing, I'm like, oh yeah, this is addressing one another.
27:49 The who we are in Christ, like we're standing on a firm foundation, and then some of the songs are more like worshiping who God is. Like, He is amazing God who created us and made a way for us to be with Him, and He's the alpha and all the things. Like there was one song, it was just listing out who God is. I can't remember the lyrics, but you do probably. So toward others and towards God, and in Psalm 95 says, Let us come into His presence with thanksgiving, and let us make a joyful noise to him with songs of praise.
28:21 That's what I was thinking where it says noise. Right here, it says noise. That's more like where where I'm at. Okay. Next, giving thanks always.
28:30 This is the fourth part of syllable. Giving thanks always for everything to God the father in the name of our Lord Jesus Christ. There's a ton here. Okay. This is a genuine thankfulness.
28:43 This one was hard for me to wrap my mind around. At first, I thought one Thessalonians five eighteen where he calls us to be thankful in all circumstances. That's hard. But here he says to be thankful for all things, to be thankful for the good, to be thankful for the bad. How do you do that?
29:06 Like, I'm kind of a sarcastic person, and when somebody does something to me that's not cool, I'm like, thanks, man. But I'm not thankful. I'm being hypocritical. I'm not being truthful. So how do we do that?
29:23 And he says to God the father, because of Jesus, we can go to the father and we can trust his goodness, we can trust his power, and we can trust that our minds are fickle and his ways are so much greater than our ways. James one calls us to rejoice in our trials. I think it's parallel. That is impossible without understanding what we actually deserve. If we actually think about what we deserve, it really helps us to be thankful for for what is given to us, good or bad.
30:02 Ephesians one eleven talks about he works all things in agreement to the purpose of his will, and then Romans eight twenty eight is similar. He works all things for the good of those who love him. But how do we get there? That when I was preaching to the windshield this morning, this came to mind, it might have been last night, but I was thinking, you know, when I put my kids to bed and I pray over my wife at night, it's tough sometimes because I have a fear that's not true that they're going to be taken. And then I encourage myself, not in wisdom, but in feeling, encourage myself, oh, it'll be fine.
30:45 Like, my mom died when I was young, so no way my wife would die. Like, that's not how God works. Right? I don't need to have an expectation that I'm going to have this life of ease, a long life, and all my kids are going to live. I mean, but I also don't want to have a fear that one of them is going to be taken.
31:08 We have to trust that we are His and He is good. Didn't mean to get emotional. Alright. Last one, submitting to one another in the fear of Christ. At first, I wrote reverence.
31:27 ESV translates the word reverence. Reverence is close. Fear the the word is phobos. So we know that that means fear. What in the world does that mean?
31:39 First, we'll talk about submitting to one another. So, it takes humility. We're called to count others more significant than ourselves. We we submit ourselves to Jesus, right? Jesus doesn't submit to our will but in a way, he positions himself as a servant for us.
32:00 He totally presents himself as a servant by putting himself under. He submitted to the father's will by coming here to earth and being close to us nasty, stinky human beings and lived a perfect life with us. Right? And then He chose to be obedient to the Father's will to go to the cross. And He hung there, submitting Himself under as a servant for us to take on the wrath of God.
32:37 And in that moment, experiencing horror, not just physically, but horrific separation on the cross just in that moment from the Father as He takes on as our servant, which is mind blowing, our sin, the payment for our sin. That's remember the will of God is our sanctification, being more like Christ. That's the model. Like, this looks really pretty, but it's super gruesome and deathly. Right?
33:14 Yes. If if so why do we have a hard time with the word submit? It says submitting to one another. I'm not even talking about verse 22. It says submitting to one another.
33:27 We have to take the pride out and remember whose we are and what our goal is in this life. We want to submit others and serve them and remember to take advantage of that season if someone's having a difficult time or someone needs an encouraging word. But then the fear of Christ, what what does that mean? In Matthew 10, Jesus is saying, don't fear those who can only kill your body. Who do we fear?
33:58 God, who can who can who can destroy both body and soul? Fear not, you are more than sparrows. Oh, okay. So we've got both and. Fear, don't fear.
34:12 Matthew 25, the women go into the tomb. Right? They see an angel. The tomb's empty. It's powerful, it's wild, and they walk away in fear and joy.
34:27 To be a Christian involves knowing how both of these fit together. In Acts five, Ananias and Sapphire, remember they had a land sale and they lied about it and God struck them and killed them. That's fearful. The great fear fell on the whole church. But then in Acts nine, the whole church had peace being built up, walking in the fear of the Lord and comfort of the Holy Spirit.
34:53 This is a piper John Piper analogy. God is like a blazing fireball, Okay? And we're like a tiny little twig. And we can either run away or ignore him or run to him. That's fearful.
35:12 Right? But all terror is removed and sweetness remains. And remember that earlier slide that the fear of Christ is the beginning of wisdom. Like, it all fits together. The wisdom, walking carefully, fearing God, taking every opportunity to let the spirit work in us to serve and love God and others.
35:38 Here's a sermon in a sentence right here. May we all carefully walk through this life in wisdom, diligently in the direction of God's will with the reliance on the fullness of the spirit to worship together and humbly serve others in the fear of the Lord. I left that part out. I'll invite the band to come up. We'll pray.
36:01 Lord, thank you so much for today. Thank you for your word. Help us to understand it. Help us to be impacted by your word and to make wise choices to be careful and diligent in our steps lord. We love you.
36:15 In Jesus name, amen.
