A study guide · June 26, 2022 · A Harmony of the Gospels

In one paragraph

This message came from the account of the Gadarene demoniac, examined through the parallel accounts in Matthew, Mark, and Luke. Pastor Mark walked the congregation through all three versions of the story, letting the details build on one another, as the church continues its chronological harmony of the gospels. The sermon asked whether the power Jesus displayed over the supernatural realm is...

Read together

  1. Matthew 8 First gospel account of the Gadarene demoniac, read and expounded as part of the harmony of the gospels
  2. Mark 5 Third gospel account of the Gadarene demoniac, read and expounded with additional details including the herd of about 2,000 pigs
  3. Luke 8 Second gospel account of the Gadarene demoniac, read and expounded as part of the harmony of the gospels
  4. Psalm 139 Referenced as the basis for the hymn Cleanse Me, specifically 'Search me, o God, and see if there is any wicked way in me'
  5. James 4:7 Paraphrased as 'resist the devil and he will flee from you', cited in the context of demonic oppression
  6. 1 Peter 5:9-10 Paraphrased as 'resist him firm in your faith, and God will perfect, confirm, strengthen, and establish', cited the prior week

Talk about it

  1. Pastor Mark described Rembrandt painting himself into scenes from the life of Christ, and invited the congregation to put themselves into these stories. When you read the account of the Gadarene demoniac, where do you find yourself in the scene, and why?
  2. The townspeople saw a man completely restored, yet they begged Jesus to leave because they were afraid of his power. Have you ever found yourself pulling back from what God was doing because it felt costly or out of your control? What did that look like?
  3. Pastor Mark drew a distinction between demonic possession and demonic oppression, and said that whether the language of demons is taken literally or metaphorically, the reality of something that torments and controls a person is still real. How have you seen that play out in your own life or in someone close to you?
  4. Jesus told the restored man not to follow him but to go home and tell his friends what God had done for him. Pastor Mark noted that when the disciples later reached the Decapolis, there was already a community of faith there because of that one man's witness. What does that suggest about the kind of mission most of us are actually called to?
  5. Pastor Mark made a distinction between mercy and grace, saying mercy is not receiving a bad consequence you deserve, and grace is receiving a blessing you do not deserve. Looking at how Jesus dealt with the man in this story, where do you see both of those at work, and which one do you find easier to accept for yourself?
