Pray for All: The Universal Scope of the Gospel

March 11, 2018 · 1 Timothy

Scripture referenced 9 passages

The passage this message was preached from, in full, with every other passage it reached for.

  • 1 Timothy 2:1-7 the main passage preached through in full

    1 I exhort therefore, first of all, that petitions, prayers, intercessions, and givings of thanks, be made for all men:

    2 for kings and all who are in high places; that we may lead a tranquil and quiet life in all godliness and reverence.

    3 For this is good and acceptable in the sight of God our Savior;

    4 who desires all people to be saved and come to full knowledge of the truth.

    5 For there is one God, and one mediator between God and men, the man Christ Jesus,

    6 who gave himself as a ransom for all; the testimony in its own times;

    7 to which I was appointed a preacher and an apostle (I am telling the truth in Christ, not lying), a teacher of the Gentiles in faith and truth.

1 Timothy 1

referenced as the opening of the letter stating the aim of the charge is love from a pure heart, good conscience, and sincere faith

1 Paul, an apostle of Jesus Christ according to the commandment of God our Savior and the Lord Jesus Christ our hope;

2 to Timothy, my true child in faith: Grace, mercy, and peace, from God our Father and Christ Jesus our Lord.

3 As I urged you when I was going into Macedonia, stay at Ephesus that you might command certain men not to teach a different doctrine,

4 and not to pay attention to myths and endless genealogies, which cause disputes, rather than God’s stewardship, which is in faith—

5 but the goal of this command is love, out of a pure heart and a good conscience and sincere faith;

6 from which things some, having missed the mark, have turned away to vain talking;

7 desiring to be teachers of the law, though they understand neither what they say, nor about what they strongly affirm.

8 But we know that the law is good, if a person uses it lawfully,

9 as knowing this, that law is not made for a righteous person, but for the lawless and insubordinate, for the ungodly and sinners, for the unholy and profane, for murderers of fathers and murderers of mothers, for manslayers,

10 for the sexually immoral, for homosexuals, for slave-traders, for liars, for perjurers, and for any other thing contrary to the sound doctrine;

11 according to the Good News of the glory of the blessed God, which was committed to my trust.

12 And I thank him who enabled me, Christ Jesus our Lord, because he counted me faithful, appointing me to service;

13 although I was before a blasphemer, a persecutor, and insolent. However, I obtained mercy, because I did it ignorantly in unbelief.

14 The grace of our Lord abounded exceedingly with faith and love which is in Christ Jesus.

15 The saying is faithful and worthy of all acceptance, that Christ Jesus came into the world to save sinners; of whom I am chief.

16 However, for this cause I obtained mercy, that in me first, Jesus Christ might display all his patience, for an example of those who were going to believe in him for eternal life.

17 Now to the King eternal, immortal, invisible, to God who alone is wise, be honor and glory forever and ever. Amen.

18 This instruction I commit to you, my child Timothy, according to the prophecies which were given to you before, that by them you may wage the good warfare;

19 holding faith and a good conscience; which some having thrust away made a shipwreck concerning the faith;

20 of whom are Hymenaeus and Alexander; whom I delivered to Satan, that they might be taught not to blaspheme.

Deuteronomy 6:4-9

quoted as the Shema to connect 'there is one God' in 1 Timothy 2 to the Jewish daily prayer

4 Hear, Israel: Yahweh is our God. Yahweh is one.

5 You shall love Yahweh your God with all your heart, with all your soul, and with all your might.

6 These words, which I command you today, shall be on your heart;

7 and you shall teach them diligently to your children, and shall talk of them when you sit in your house, and when you walk by the way, and when you lie down, and when you rise up.

8 You shall bind them for a sign on your hand, and they shall be for frontlets between your eyes.

9 You shall write them on the door posts of your house, and on your gates.

23 For I received from the Lord that which also I delivered to you, that the Lord Jesus on the night in which he was betrayed took bread.

24 When he had given thanks, he broke it, and said, “Take, eat. This is my body, which is broken for you. Do this in memory of me.”

Recap

The message in order, in a few minutes of reading.

Pastor Nathan opened 1 Timothy 2:1-7 by asking the congregation a simple question: what is this passage actually about? His answer was that the passage is about the universal scope of the gospel, and he traced that single idea through every verse.

What was said

He began by noting that the passage is a paragraph, not a list of proof texts, and that people tend to read it in pieces to support what they already believe. Some see a four-point sermon on prayer. Some see a passage about government. Some see a statement on universalism. He said the right approach is to read it as a whole, in context, with attention to what Paul was actually fighting against in Ephesus.

The word that kept surfacing was the Greek word for "all," pantone. Pastor Nathan pointed out that it appears again and again in just seven verses: pray for all people, for kings and all in high positions, God desires all to be saved. He argued that Paul was addressing a real problem in Ephesus: people had given up on certain groups being reachable. The churchy folk had narrowed the scope of who the gospel was for.

On the command to pray for kings, he noted that Nero was in power at the time. Paul was not saying to wait for a government you approve of before you pray. He was saying pray for all of them, including the ones who are making your life difficult, because you cannot change a heart but God can. Doing that, Pastor Nathan said, is what makes a peaceful and quiet life possible. You pray, you trust God with the result, and you stop carrying the aggravation yourself.

He pushed back on reading verse 4 as universalism. God desiring all to be saved does not override human free will, and the very next verse closes that door: there is one God and one mediator between God and men, the man Christ Jesus. Pastor Nathan connected the "one God" language directly to the Shema from Deuteronomy, noting that Paul's Jewish opponents would have recited it twice a day. Paul's point was not new information but a pointed extension: yes, one God, and therefore one mediator, not Moses, not the law.

The word translated "preacher" in verse 7 is the Greek word kerux, a herald or town crier, someone whose job was to carry critical public news. Pastor Nathan said Paul was describing his own commission: carry this specific message to the Gentiles. The parenthetical "I am telling the truth, I am not lying" was Paul speaking directly to people who came from the same Jewish background he did, people who would find it hardest to believe he had counted all of it as rubbish compared to knowing Christ.

He closed by pulling the thread through to its practical point. Israel was meant to be a light to the nations. When they turned inward instead of outward, the rest of the world was left without the message. He said the same danger applies now. Christ gave himself as a ransom for all, and that testimony can be shared with confidence to any person in any place, because it is genuinely for them. The congregation then moved into communion around that same idea: one mediator, one table, people from several countries in the room, and a mission team about to leave for Guatemala.

Doing a Bible study?

Here is a guide we have prepared for you: the passages in order, questions for the group, and room to write.

  1. The pastor asked whether we have given up on praying for certain people or groups. Who comes to mind for you, and what has made it hard to keep praying for them?
  2. The pastor said that people often read scripture looking for proof texts for what they already believe. Can you think of a time when you came to a passage with your mind already made up? What helped you read it differently?

0:00 Alright. Good morning, everybody. You made it. You made it. It's nine and you lost an hour of sleep, and you're here.
0:08 Glad to see you. How about this? Why don't we stand up together? We'll wipe the sleep from our eyes and sing, what a friend we have in Jesus.
0:24 What a friend. A friend we have in Jesus. All our sins
0:32 and grease have been.
2:58 Hang on. Hey. Hey. There it is. Announcements this morning.
3:01 Just a few of them, and they've been scrolling while you were coming in. We have Monday nights happening. Monday nights at first b happens at 06:00. Monday evenings. What's going on?
3:12 Smile music message. Tomorrow, I I forget what's on the menu, but it's gonna be good. I know that. And the message is enter through the narrow door. That narrow door is Jesus.
3:22 Amen.
3:23 That lines up with today's message. Joanna is happening at the same time in this room is where they start out on the game circle. Awana is kids matter to God and so we're pouring scripture into the hearts and minds of children of the community. So, that's Awana happening tomorrow night at 06:00. Youth group is happening on Tuesday night, 06:30 to eight and that is for middle school and high school.
3:47 Both together, 06:30 to eight on Tuesday night. Baby bottle campaign. If you saw the little bassinet out in the in the foyer out there, Turning Point is our local pregnancy resource center and one of their fundraisers. They hand out empty baby bottles to all of the churches in town and otherwise, and they, raise money by you filling up those bottles and bringing them back in. And I saw two full bottles come back in today, but that's Turning Point's, fundraiser that's happening.
4:15 Guatemala, we are sending a trip to Guatemala, the first week of April. So just after Easter, our mission trip begins. Some people are going down a little earlier. We were trying to find flights. So the last week of March, first week of April is spring break, and we will be going down for a mission trip to Guatemala.
4:34 There is a team meeting this Wednesday night from 05:30. If you are going on that trip, we'd like for you to come. There are 33 people that are scheduled to go. Yeah. 33 of them.
4:45 The youngest one is less than a year, and the oldest one we won't mention. I don't know the age on the oldest one, but it's it's a wide range, let's say. So there is a Mangelson photograph that is hanging at the end of the hall down there, and that is on raffle today. We're going to sell tickets for fifteen minutes after the service is over. When the long winded preacher shuts his mouth, we're gonna sell tickets for fifteen minutes on that photograph and a frame photograph and on this snowmobile.
5:18 At the back, back there, there is a little table, and Paul Sandretto will be back there. He donated the snowmobile and knows all of the answers about the questions if you have any of those. And we're gonna do that for fifteen minutes, and then it's over. We're gonna draw for it. Everybody with me?
5:35 Y'all are still asleep this morning. Alright. We'll reconvene. Spaghetti dinner as a fundraiser has been canceled. We are not doing the spaghetti dinner.
5:44 If you put it down on your little calendar in phone, you can go ahead and just cancel that. That's not gonna happen. You can if you're looking for spaghetti, you're gonna have to find it somewhere else. 06:30, March 16. Alright?
5:54 And if there are any other announcements or prayer requests, they will be in the bulletin. We keep up with these fairly meticulously, keep up with a lot of stuff that's going on in the community and in the church and also prayer request and it is a huge ministry. This week, I will say one of em that's been in there for a while, Ben Upton, Mark Upton's son, had a surgery down in Salt Lake City and there are a lot of y'all who were praying for him because you found out about it one way or another but you can find out about all of those type of prayer request in our bulletin. So thank you for doing that. And Ben's surgery went great.
6:30 He was expected to have to spend two days in the ICU and then five to fifteen in recovery. And when he came out of surgery, he did not have to go to the ICU at all. And they said that the the tumor that was removed was it was easier than they thought, and it was much smoother surgery, and he probably will not have to be in the hospital but about a week. So, anyway, amen. Praise God for that and would you stand and grieve?
6:58 Oh, one more. I knew I was going to forget it. So, we do the third Thursday of each month. The third Thursday of each month. First B, in the form of Heather and John Fisher.
7:08 They usually handle the Good Samaritan mission meal over there, at the Good Samaritan. So it's making a meal for how many people, Heather? About one right now. Okay. So about 20 people.
7:20 If there is anyone who would like to volunteer right now, and I'll auction it off. Anybody. No. Not really auction. Anybody that would like to, would you raise your hand, or would you just see Heather Fisher after this is over?
7:30 It's one Thursday because they're out of town, not gonna be able to make it this time. They do it almost every third Thursday of the month. If you would like to help out with that, please let Heather know. Thank you for doing that. And I think that's it.
7:41 Would you stand and greet one another warmly, and we'll bring you back together with a peppy little song. You're up. What's that? It's marinated. It's just there.
7:59 Yeah.
15:46 God, we wanna pause just to to say thank you for who you are and what you've done, that you are truly the name above all names. You are the God above all gods. Thank you God for the peace and the comfort that you provide. Thank you God that salvation is found in all of us
16:06 but you and you are.
16:08 I pray that meet us right where we are right now. Be comfort and strengthen each person.
16:16 In Jesus'
20:14 soul,
20:16 my light, my ear.
20:22 Amen. Would you pray with me? God, our true. Thank you for, your never ending, relentless love toward us. Thank you, God, for using your power and and your authority as God to make yourself a servant and come and rescue us.
20:46 God, that is the good news of the gospel, that we've fallen short, but that you have died in our place for our sin, that you've raised us to new life, and that's why we're here. That's why by grace we draw near to you because you have drawn near to us. And so, God, we just wanna pause and thank you. Thank you for every good and perfect gift that comes from you. And I pray that and through this worship of of giving, it extends far beyond this.
21:17 I know. But I pray that you would use the the gifts that we that we offer, that you've equipped us with in the first place, that we can use them as a light for you. I do pray, God, that the bright spots in Jackson, would even grow brighter, and it really and truly would overcome, the darkness. And, I pray, God, not not just that for this little church and and this little town, but for the gospel worldwide. We are a family of God, and help us to see this that as well in Jesus' name.
21:50 Amen. You can have a seat.
22:22 How did you come to the end of no sail? Do you thirst from the train from the well? Jesus is calling. Jesus is calling. Bring your sorrows and trade them for joy.
23:26 From the ashes, a new life is born.
26:21 There they go. The children are dismissed to go down to children's church They certainly may stay up here if you would like. Good morning. Good morning. How are you?
26:44 How'd you sleep last night? When you woke up, was it dark? I am up to first Timothy two. We're going in our chronological study of the New Testament going forward in the order that the books were written as best we could tell and we're up to first Timothy two. This is verses one through seven and this part of first Timothy two is a joy to preach and I'm going to ask you to pray for me next week as I encounter some verses that are going to be for some of you difficult.
27:19 I ask you to go ahead and start looking now. Please, if you would. Not right now but sometime this week. Our aim as Paul says to Timothy at the beginning of this letter, the aim of our charge, Christians, is godly love, is love, agape love that issues from a pure heart and a good conscience and a sincere faith. So the aim of our charge is love that issues from a pure heart, and we are shooting for that.
27:51 And if we fall short, if we miss the mark, we do have a savior, we do have a sanctifier as we submit our will to his. He purifies our hearts. We can go to sleep with a good conscience because we have that sincere faith in Jesus Christ and that makes all the difference. You can have a sincere faith in something that's not true and just be completely out of it. So the aim of our charge is this, and we'll go forward, maybe.
28:26 We're having all kind of technical glitches this morning. Can I get the most charismatic person in the room to raise their hands and pray? Lord, would you please fix all of these little details because this Sherman's going to get real short real fast. There it goes. Hey.
28:41 So, first Timothy two one through seven. I'm going ask you what the passage is about. Usually, I preach my way through. I'm going to reveal all the verses first this morning. On the next four slides, you will see the whole passage we're going to cover but I want you to be thinking about in your mind, what is this passage about?
28:57 First of all, then, I urge that supplications and prayers, intercessions and Thanksgivings be made for all people, for kings, and all who are in high positions that we may lead a peaceful life, a quiet life, godly and dignified in every way. This is good and it's pleasing in the sight of God, our savior, who desires our all people to be saved, come to the knowledge of the truth. For there's one God, there's one mediator between God and men, the man, Jesus Christ, or Christ Jesus, who gave himself as a ransom for all, which is the testimony given at the proper time. For this, I was appointed a preacher and an apostle. I'm telling the truth.
29:40 I'm not lying. A teacher of the Gentiles in faith and truth. That is the passage. It's just these seven verses and what's it about? What's the passage about?
29:54 I'm opening it up. This is not a, we've got communion today but it's not a long passage. I just want to see what you say. Is it about prayer? First verse, start off like this.
30:04 First of all, then, I urge. Paul is urging them. It's not a command but it's an urge, urging them to supplications, prayers, intercessions, and Thanksgiving. It's four different words for prayer. Quite possibly and I think it is.
30:22 They have a little bit of a different connotation each. Supplications, prayers, intercessions, and Thanksgivings and if you were just given this one verse on a typical Sunday morning, then, you might think, hey, that's a four point sermon right there. Supplications, prayers, intercessions, and Thanksgivings. We can build a theology off of that about prayer. Is it about prayer?
30:41 Is it about government? Because some of y'all hit this. For kings, praying in four different ways, for kings, and all who are in high positions. Is it about government? Is it about our inner peace?
30:57 Is that what it's about? That we may lead a peaceful and a quiet life, godly and dignified in every way. Is that what it's about? The passage. Is it a clear statement of universalism?
31:09 If you've been in seminary circles or if you're in theological debate, even in small groups sometimes, people will bring up well, it says right here and they bring one verse and if you see this verse, this is good. It's pleasing inside of God, our savior, who desires and God get what he wants, right? God desires all people to be saved. Some translations, God's will is that all be saved and we know God's will happens. Is it a statement about universalism?
31:37 Actually, the next set of verses says, for there's one God, there's one mediator between God, men, the man, Christ Jesus, who gave himself as a ransom for all. Is that a statement on universalism? Does that mean that no matter who you are, what you do, what you believe, everyone eventually will end up with God in heaven. That's what universalism teaches. Love wins.
31:59 Have you read it, Rob Bell? Is it a statement on universalism? Is it Paul touting his authority? Again. He starts off.
32:10 He says, by the commandment of God, I'm an apostle. Right here, he says, for this, I was appointed a preacher and an apostle. Tell him the truth. I'm not lying. A teacher.
32:22 So, he's a preacher, an apostle, and a teacher of the Gentiles in faith and truth. Is it Paul touting his authority? What's the passage about? What do y'all think? The highlighting makes a big difference, doesn't it?
32:36 You can see things the way that you want to see things and people typically look through scripture looking for proof text for what they already believe. In this place, in this time, Ephesus is where Timothy was stationed and he was put there by Paul and he was given a seal of approval in this letter and before that, to preach to the concerns of the time and place. Now, we have concerns in our time and place. I think they match up pretty well with the time and place of Timothy. But what's this passage about?
33:11 I'm going to go through it and I'll try to highlight differently now because I think that this stands out. If you read the text, this is a paragraph. It's not just individual thoughts for the day or proof text for your seminary professor, okay? It's a paragraph. That's the way we communicate in sections of thought and this two one through seven is that.
33:33 First of all, then, the all. The word there is pentone. Has anybody ever worked in painting cars, art, screen printing, anything where you had to deal with color and ink much? Pantone is the Pantone matching system. And I thought, man, what a genius thing.
33:53 When I would learn the word Pantone, was really easy. I used to work in screen printing, and I knew that Pantone was this color wheel of all the different colors. You fan it out and say, okay, to match whatever somebody asked you to match, you can use the Pantone matching system. It's color number this. You look up the formula for that color and then you come up with it.
34:12 You can do that. The Pantone Matching System, I thought, wow, they're brilliant because Pantone is the Greek word for all. All colors are included in this matching system. That's beautiful. Actually, more I thought about it though, the Pantone Matching ing System is abbreviated PMS, and maybe they didn't think about it all the way through.
34:30 It's been around for about a hundred years. That acronym probably was not being used at the time, but it is all or of every kind of, the whole Pantone, and that word comes up a lot in this text. First of all, then, and he could've said lots of other ways. First of all, then, I urge that supplications, prayers, intercessions, and thanksgivings be made for all people. All.
34:57 All the whole of humanity, for every kind of person as the Pantone matching system, for every color of person, for every race, for every gender, for every geographical area, for all, every kind of person, for people, for kings and all who are in high positions. He says it again. All, all, all, all. It stands out and then he says that or so that, it's the henna clause. I'm so fond of because it tells the preacher what that sentence is about.
35:32 All, all, be praying for all. First of all, pray for all. All low socioeconomic level up to all kings and all who are in a high position of authority so that we, Christians, those believers in Jesus Christ, those of us who've already accepted him so that we may lead a peaceful and quiet life. It does not have to be aggravation all the time. It does not have to be offense all the time.
36:04 It doesn't have to be an argument all the time. Pray for all. You can't change someone's heart. No matter how good your argument is, you can't change someone's heart. Pray for them.
36:16 God changes heart. Pray for all so that we may lead a peaceful and quiet life. Godly and dignified in every way that every is even, it's a, it's not exactly pentone but it's posse. It's the same. All, it comes through.
36:34 You can maybe lead a peaceful, quiet, godly, and dignified life in all that you do and this is good. Do you hear rumblings of Old Testament right there? God did this and it was good. This is good. What we've seen so far in first Timothy and if you look at first Timothy, second Timothy, and Titus, those are the pastoral epistles.
36:58 If you look at those three together, we see that his main opponents or his main people that he is attempting to straighten or rebuke, reprove in first and second Timothy and in Titus are folks who are from a Jewish background that still feel that the law must be kept. This is good and it's pleasing in the sight of God, our savior, all, all, every, all. Pray for all of em. We only have one side of this conversation. I told you a few weeks ago, it's like listening to a phone call.
37:37 You don't really know the whole phone call from one side but you can get a pretty good idea. And if you study this as a whole in context and you're not trying to just cherry pick verses here and there. You see that what he's up against is that people were limiting the scope of their prayers. So, have you given up on anybody? Have you given up on a group of people?
38:03 I don't bring politics up very often. I don't think but have a have you given up on the other side of the aisle? And I'm speaking to both sides of the aisle right now. Have you given up on a certain geographic location of the world saying, whatever. Have you given up on anyone?
38:26 Have you given up on one of your neighbors? Ugh. I just quit praying for that guy. Oh, oh, oh, every. It's good.
38:38 It's pleasing in the sight of God, our savior. Our savior. He's saying, we are in one family. We're going to do communion. We're going to come to the Lord's table and this is the place where we all come together because no one deserves salvation.
38:58 But Christ offers it and anyone who will accept it. He desires that all people will be saved. He does not interfere with your free will But he does want for all to be saved. If I were looking for a verse on universalism, I might go here but I'd have to divorce it from its whole context. The problem that Ephesus, especially the churchy folk in Ephesus were confronting is that they had given up on the possibility of certain people being reached.
39:31 When he mentions four kings, Nero was in charge at this time. For all who are in positions. We just got through studying the book of Philippians and he said, the whole Praetorian Guard knows. Everybody around Nero knows about Jesus because he'd been carrying this message. Paul didn't say, he's a Roman soldier.
39:58 He's oppressing Israel and he's oppressing Christians. I'm not going to pray for him. He's outside of the scope of the gospel. He was sharing it. Sharing the message that changed his life.
40:10 God, our savior, who desires all people to be saved and to come to the knowledge of the truth. For there is one God. Hey, does this sound familiar, Old Testament folks, scholars? For there is one God. This is from Deuteronomy six.
40:28 Hero Israel, the Lord our God. The Lord is one. It's the Shema. The Shema is the daily prayers. They were to recite once in the morning, once in the afternoon.
40:37 Bind them on their frontlets. It's this, hero Israel, the Lord our God. The Lord is one. There is one God. You shall love the Lord your God with all your heart and all your soul and all your might.
40:46 These words that I command you today shall be on your heart. You shall teach them diligently to your children. You should talk of them when you sit in your house, when you walk by the way, when you lie down, and when you rise, you shall bind them as a sign on your hand and they will be as frontlets your eyes, you shall write them on the doorpost of your house and on your gates. This is something the Lord is one. The Lord is one.
41:09 And then they extend, he extends that idea and he says and there is one mediator. One mediator. So, Paul, the pharisaical Jewish guy who persecuted Christians, Saul, I should say, Saul, who was from this background is having a deep, deep empathy for those who are still stuck in the thinking that the law is what mediates between God and man or that Moses, they would count Moses as their mediator, called him that several times in the Old Testament. Paul says through Timothy two Timothy, for there is one God and there is one mediator between God and man. Jesus said, I am the way.
41:53 I am the truth. I am the life. No one comes to the father except through me. In context or out of context, that is an exclusivity to the gospel. It is for all who believe in Jesus Christ, the one mediator between God and men.
42:09 Remember when I was writing my theological statement, this one comes up a lot especially in our time because most people nowadays are universalist kind of or they believe there's nothing, nihilist, nothing afterwards. For all roads lead to heaven, if you follow whatever it is that you believe, if you follow your own code or whatever religious code you choose, all roads lead to heaven and this says, no. That is not true. That is not good. That is not it.
42:39 There's one God and there's one mediator between God and man, the man, Christ Jesus, who gave himself as a ransom for all. What impressed upon me when I was little is that the pastor said, I've been in church my whole life. I was 10 years old and I'd heard the message many, many, many, many, many times. I'd had an invitation more than you would believe. Every time.
43:07 There's an invitation but I went to a camp when I was 10 years old and this pastor said, all, every, each, one. So, if you had been the only sinner, Christ would have died in your place. It wasn't a numbers game for him. He cared deeply for everyone of you, for all. He gave himself as a ransom for all which is the testimony.
43:33 This is the testimony. This is this is the information that needs to be shared, given at the proper time. Galatians says, at just the right time, in the fullness of time, Christ was born of a woman under the law. So, he might redeem those who are under the law. This proper time is the idea of it being an opportune moment and anytime that you share this testimony, there's the possibility that someone would accept it.
44:00 So, it's an opportune moment. It's not just Chronos time, it's Kairos term. It's a testimony given at the proper time that Christ died for you and you can say that with confidence. If they accept it, they're in. If they reject it, pray someone else will share it with them again because they're either going to reject, accept, or hear more later.
44:24 And for this, I was appointed a preacher. This is an unusual word in the New Testament. Only happens three times. It's twice in the pastoral and once in Peter. Paul doesn't use it very often.
44:35 I like it. Keruks is the Keruks is the word and it's a herald. Someone who is like the town crier. At this time, the way that they transmitted news, if you've ever watched old movies about Rome, a lot of the segues between so that you know what's going on in town is they let you listen in on the town crier. What he's saying?
44:54 So, he stands up on a platform and he says, Caesar, whatever Caesar had done that day, whatever decree had come forth, whatever the new law or change was, we use newspapers and internet, all kinds of different ways of spreading news but he says, I'm a herald, a preacher, a proclaimer, the town crier, proclaiming critical news for the public, someone who communicates the message. So, Paul says and he was, if you read back in Acts, he tells a story three times and the central part of his story is that Jesus conferred upon him a message that had to be carried to the Gentiles and he was the one that carried it. For this, I was appointed a preacher and an apostle. An apostle is someone who is sent out, someone who's sent. Telling truth and I'm not lying.
45:43 He says parenthetically, a teacher of the Gentiles in faith and truth. Now, when all, all, all, all, all, all, every all was all over this and we know that he's saying endless genealogies and myths in Titus. He says, Jewish myths. He says that. It's not anti Semitic.
46:04 The gospel is for the Jews too, obviously. He's just saying, I'm telling you the truth. I'm not lying. I know how weird sounds. I came from the same place you come from and it seems like all of that that we did twice a day, every day, which still makes some kind of sense but Paul says in Philippians, I counted all as rubbish.
46:22 It's all rubbish when compared to knowing Christ, the power of his resurrection. I'm telling truth, I'm not lying. I'm a teacher of the Gentiles in faith and truth. He commissioned me to go. What we had wrong, we were supposed to be a light for the nations and we turned inward instead of outward and when we turn inward instead of outward, we left the rest of the world damned.
46:46 Does that make sense? We have the only hope that there is. We need to be sharing it because Christ died for all. Alright. So, what's the passage about?
47:07 I think the passage is about the universal scope of the gospel. It is for everyone who will believe. First of all, then, I'm going read it again. I urge you all for supplication. Supplication is deep seated request.
47:24 Gut level request was the burning need and desire of your heart. Oftentimes, the closest one for you is about you. It could be about somebody else but supplications is a deep desire before God that you will share with. Prayers is simply communication with God. So, it's speaking to God but it's also listening for what he might say in return.
47:47 Intercessions, the connotation there is praying for someone else like you are praying for others. Thanksgivings. Be thankful for all. I think he's actually stacking words for, you know, he's just going through in one, two, three, four different words for prayer but they all do have a slightly different connotation. He wants that to happen for all of the people, for kings.
48:13 Nero, my goodness. If you thought the last administration was bad or you think this administration is bad, it wasn't as bad as Nero. And Paul is saying pray, okay? For all who are in high position, for Pete Muldoon, our neighbor, right there, the mayor. Whether you like him or not, be praying for him.
48:41 I cannot imagine being mayor of this town and I'm a pastor in this town and I cannot imagine being the mayor of this town. I think what Paul is saying right here is, you do all you can do. You can't do anything to change their mind but God can change their heart. Be praying earnestly, sincerely, and when you have done that, you can be peaceful about it because you've done what you can do. Godly and dignified in every way.
49:17 The other thing about the quiet life there is the more you seek to do the right thing and the more out there you are, the more fire you draw. So, I think that Paul in this time actually was saying, peaceful and quiet life is okay. Godly and dignified. Even if you die for what you believe, you'll die dignified. This is good and it's pleasing in the sight of God, our savior, who desires all people to be saved.
49:49 He doesn't limit that at all. He doesn't limit who he wants to see saved. I don't want to be a limitation on who God saves because I won't tell the message. God is completely sovereign. Yes and we are absolutely responsible.
50:10 Yes. I don't think that this negates either of those things. We are plan A. There's no plan B. He says that you'll be my witnesses.
50:21 He desires all people to be saved and come to the knowledge of the truth. You can proclaim the gospel with confidence that it is for the person that you're speaking to. For there is one God and there's one mediator between God and man, the man, Christ Jesus, who gave himself as a ransom for all which is the testimony given at the proper time. And for this, I was appointed a preacher and an apostle, telling truth, not lying. I know how it is, people.
50:48 I understand. Yes, I know that that person treated you wrong and you're right about it. They did treat you wrong. And it's not right before God but you can still forgive them and you can still pray for them. Do you get that?
51:03 Grace is unmerited favor. I'm not arguing that they're better than you think they are. They're probably worse than you think they are but you can still extend grace. You can still extend mercy because that's what God has done for you. A teacher of the Gentiles in faith and truth.
51:22 I'm teaching them what they need to know. That's the truth. I'm giving them what it is That they need to believe and it is the message of the cross. That Christ died for sins. Now, we're going to go into the time of communion right now.
51:39 I pray for you. I mean, the aim of our charge right here, pure heart, good conscience, sincere faith. Imma give you a second. Imma ask the elders to come forward to distribute these elements. But I'm gonna give you a second.
51:58 We practice an open table here, and I believe, I looked around the room this morning, we have people from about five or six different countries in here. I know we have some from Jamaica, some are from India, some from Romania, some from Mexico. There are folks from all over the world and I think the all, all, all, all, every, we're sending out a team to Guatemala. We've got somebody in Kenya right now. It's all people.
52:25 It's all people that we're shooting for. The aim of our charge is this, a pure heart. The only one who can purify the heart is Jesus. He lived a perfect life. We are going to distribute this little cracker and it's a representation of Christ's body or his life that was lived perfectly.
52:49 Surrendered willingly. Would you pray with me? Lord God, I thank you for the life that Jesus lived here. Though he was tempted and tried in all of the ways that we are. There's nothing that was not common to man.
53:04 It was exactly the same ways that we are tempted to a greater extent than most of us experienced. I thank you that he was without sin, that he walked a perfect life and had a perfect spotless record to give to any and everyone that would accept it. In Jesus name, lord, would you bless this? Representation of Christ's body as we distribute it. And as we look into our hearts, lord, and we look to see if we do actually have a good conscience.
53:39 I pray lord that you would forgive me where I've gone astray this week where I slip over into the flesh. And lord, I give the opportunity and the time right now for everyone else to examine their life and see where they stand with you. In Jesus name, lord, would you bless the distribution of this prayer? I praise God that he says in first John one nine that if we are confessing our sins, he's faithful and just to be forgiving our sins. He says elsewhere that he will throw them in the sea of forgetfulness and remember them no more.
57:12 But throw em as far as the east is from the West. The first John one nine continues to say and he will cleanse us from all unrighteousness. Thank you Jesus for your perfect life. Well lived despite all temptations from the beginning to the end. And on the same night that Jesus was betrayed, he took bread after supper and after he had given thanks, he broke it and he told his disciples, this is my body that is given for you.
57:42 Take this and eat and do it in remembrance of me. Thank you lord for Jesus. I thank you for the perfect example that he lived but I thank you that it was more than a perfect example. That through the shedding of his blood, our sins though they be as scarlet can be as white as snow. In Jesus blood, lord, you wash anyone who calls out.
58:25 So, lord, I pray that you would bless this cup as we distribute this little cup of grape juice. Lord, I pray that you would bless each one who partakes. Lord, if there's someone here who does not believe and must let the plate pass because they don't believe. I pray that the person sitting next to him and the rest of us in the room would live our lives in such a way that it would draw them into close relationship with you. And that they would put their faith in Jesus Christ.
58:56 In Jesus name, Lord, would you bless this representation of his blood as we In the same manner that he had taken the bread, he took the cup after supper, and he told his disciples and he tells us today, that this is the new covenant. There is one mediator. By Jesus's blood, he is it. This is the new covenant in my blood, Jesus said. Take this and drink and do it as often as you will in remembrance.
1:03:03 Would you all stand up with us? I'm going to invite the band back up to sing about our one mediator and then John Micus, would you come forward and pray for us at the close of this song?
1:03:38 Takes a place. He takes a place. That stands in front of God all night. He speaks a lot. He have since we don't have the right.
1:03:52 He pleads before the God that judges hearts to salvation. He found. He found the captives, broke the bondage of our chains. We have redemption through the price that
1:06:10 Lord, thank you. I was just struck to pray for our mayor. Pray for our town, our state, our country, our planet. Father God, this is our home. You called us to Jackson.
1:06:21 We live here. But father, your glory your glory is what I pray. It shines so bright, lord. Pray for our government here. Lord, I pray for unity in the town of Jackson that comes from knowing that all fall short, that all of us fall short, Lord, and to come from a place of praying for our neighbors, praying for our leaders so that all of us, God, can understand your goodness, your glory, but mostly God, unity.
1:06:57 I pray for the unity in that, power that comes from that, and show us how to give and give and give for once so that we can lose our lives so that we can gain it, Lord. Let your sweet spirit prevail in this place. Lord, and in this country, and in all the leadership that goes on from our homes to this church, to this town, and and to the world and I pray this prayer of unity God and of love and glory. Jesus name, amen. Amen.
1:07:30 And the benediction today is from Colossians. Be wise in the way that you act toward outsiders and make the most of every opportunity. Let your conversation be always full of grace, seasoned with salt so that you may know how to answer everyone. Amen.
