Romans 15

quoted as God being the source of hope, filling believers with joy and peace through trust in him

1 Now we who are strong ought to bear the weaknesses of the weak, and not to please ourselves.

2 Let each one of us please his neighbor for that which is good, to be building him up.

3 For even Christ didn’t please himself. But, as it is written, “The reproaches of those who reproached you fell on me.”

4 For whatever things were written before were written for our learning, that through perseverance and through encouragement of the Scriptures we might have hope.

5 Now the God of perseverance and of encouragement grant you to be of the same mind one with another according to Christ Jesus,

6 that with one accord you may with one mouth glorify the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ.

7 Therefore accept one another, even as Christ also accepted you, to the glory of God.

8 Now I say that Christ has been made a servant of the circumcision for the truth of God, that he might confirm the promises given to the fathers,

9 and that the Gentiles might glorify God for his mercy. As it is written, “Therefore will I give praise to you among the Gentiles, and sing to your name.”

10 Again he says, “Rejoice, you Gentiles, with his people.”

11 Again, “Praise the Lord, all you Gentiles! Let all the peoples praise him.”

12 Again, Isaiah says, “There will be the root of Jesse, he who arises to rule over the Gentiles; in him the Gentiles will hope.”

13 Now may the God of hope fill you with all joy and peace in believing, that you may abound in hope, in the power of the Holy Spirit.

14 I myself am also persuaded about you, my brothers, that you yourselves are full of goodness, filled with all knowledge, able also to admonish others.

15 But I write the more boldly to you in part, as reminding you, because of the grace that was given to me by God,

16 that I should be a servant of Christ Jesus to the Gentiles, serving as a priest of the Good News of God, that the offering up of the Gentiles might be made acceptable, sanctified by the Holy Spirit.

17 I have therefore my boasting in Christ Jesus in things pertaining to God.

18 For I will not dare to speak of any things except those which Christ worked through me, for the obedience of the Gentiles, by word and deed,

19 in the power of signs and wonders, in the power of God’s Spirit; so that from Jerusalem, and around as far as to Illyricum, I have fully preached the Good News of Christ;

20 yes, making it my aim to preach the Good News, not where Christ was already named, that I might not build on another’s foundation.

21 But, as it is written, “They will see, to whom no news of him came. They who haven’t heard will understand.”

22 Therefore also I was hindered these many times from coming to you,

23 but now, no longer having any place in these regions, and having these many years a longing to come to you,

24 whenever I travel to Spain, I will come to you. For I hope to see you on my journey, and to be helped on my way there by you, if first I may enjoy your company for a while.

25 But now, I say, I am going to Jerusalem, serving the saints.

26 For it has been the good pleasure of Macedonia and Achaia to make a certain contribution for the poor among the saints who are at Jerusalem.

27 Yes, it has been their good pleasure, and they are their debtors. For if the Gentiles have been made partakers of their spiritual things, they owe it to them also to serve them in fleshly things.

28 When therefore I have accomplished this, and have sealed to them this fruit, I will go on by way of you to Spain.

29 I know that, when I come to you, I will come in the fullness of the blessing of the Good News of Christ.

30 Now I beg you, brothers, by our Lord Jesus Christ, and by the love of the Spirit, that you strive together with me in your prayers to God for me,

31 that I may be delivered from those who are disobedient in Judea, and that my service which I have for Jerusalem may be acceptable to the saints;

32 that I may come to you in joy through the will of God, and together with you, find rest.

33 Now the God of peace be with you all. Amen.

Psalm 34

referenced as the previous week's study, noting David singing alone then calling others to exalt God together

1 I will bless Yahweh at all times. His praise will always be in my mouth.

2 My soul shall boast in Yahweh. The humble shall hear of it, and be glad.

3 Oh magnify Yahweh with me. Let us exalt his name together.

4 I sought Yahweh, and he answered me, and delivered me from all my fears.

5 They looked to him, and were radiant. Their faces shall never be covered with shame.

6 This poor man cried, and Yahweh heard him, and saved him out of all his troubles.

7 Yahweh’s angel encamps around those who fear him, and delivers them.

8 Oh taste and see that Yahweh is good. Blessed is the man who takes refuge in him.

9 Oh fear Yahweh, you his saints, for there is no lack with those who fear him.

10 The young lions do lack, and suffer hunger, but those who seek Yahweh shall not lack any good thing.

11 Come, you children, listen to me. I will teach you the fear of Yahweh.

12 Who is someone who desires life, and loves many days, that he may see good?

13 Keep your tongue from evil, and your lips from speaking lies.

14 Depart from evil, and do good. seek peace, and pursue it.

15 Yahweh’s eyes are toward the righteous. His ears listen to their cry.

16 Yahweh’s face is against those who do evil, to cut off their memory from the earth.

17 The righteous cry, and Yahweh hears, and delivers them out of all their troubles.

18 Yahweh is near to those who have a broken heart, and saves those who have a crushed spirit.

19 Many are the afflictions of the righteous, but Yahweh delivers him out of them all.

20 He protects all of his bones. Not one of them is broken.

21 Evil shall kill the wicked. Those who hate the righteous shall be condemned.

22 Yahweh redeems the soul of his servants. None of those who take refuge in him shall be condemned.

Psalm 1

read and expounded in full as the first half of the morning's two-psalm study

1 Blessed is the man who doesn’t walk in the counsel of the wicked, nor stand on the path of sinners, nor sit in the seat of scoffers;

2 but his delight is in Yahweh’s law. On his law he meditates day and night.

3 He will be like a tree planted by the streams of water, that produces its fruit in its season, whose leaf also does not wither. Whatever he does shall prosper.

4 The wicked are not so, but are like the chaff which the wind drives away.

5 Therefore the wicked shall not stand in the judgment, nor sinners in the congregation of the righteous.

6 For Yahweh knows the way of the righteous, but the way of the wicked shall perish.

Psalm 2

read and expounded in full as the second half of the morning's two-psalm study

1 Why do the nations rage, and the peoples plot a vain thing?

2 The kings of the earth take a stand, and the rulers take counsel together, against Yahweh, and against his Anointed, saying,

3 “Let’s break their bonds apart, and cast their cords from us.”

4 He who sits in the heavens will laugh. The Lord will have them in derision.

5 Then he will speak to them in his anger, and terrify them in his wrath:

6 “Yet I have set my King on my holy hill of Zion.”

7 I will tell of the decree. Yahweh said to me, “You are my son. Today I have become your father.

8 Ask of me, and I will give the nations for your inheritance, the uttermost parts of the earth for your possession.

9 You shall break them with a rod of iron. You shall dash them in pieces like a potter’s vessel.”

10 Now therefore be wise, you kings. Be instructed, you judges of the earth.

11 Serve Yahweh with fear, and rejoice with trembling.

12 Give sincere homage to the Son, lest he be angry, and you perish on the way, for his wrath will soon be kindled. Blessed are all those who take refuge in him.

2 Peter 2:9-10

quoted to affirm that God rescues the godly and holds the unrighteous for punishment, especially those who despise authority

9 the Lord knows how to deliver the godly out of temptation and to keep the unrighteous under punishment for the day of judgment;

2 Peter 3

referenced for the statement that God is not slow in keeping his promise but is patient, not wanting anyone to perish but everyone to come to repentance

1 This is now, beloved, the second letter that I have written to you; and in both of them I stir up your sincere mind by reminding you;

2 that you should remember the words which were spoken before by the holy prophets, and the commandment of us, the apostles of the Lord and Savior:

3 knowing this first, that in the last days mockers will come, walking after their own lusts,

4 and saying, “Where is the promise of his coming? For, from the day that the fathers fell asleep, all things continue as they were from the beginning of the creation.”

5 For this they willfully forget, that there were heavens from of old, and an earth formed out of water and amid water, by the word of God;

6 by which means the world that then was, being overflowed with water, perished.

7 But the heavens that now exist, and the earth, by the same word have been stored up for fire, being reserved against the day of judgment and destruction of ungodly men.

8 But don’t forget this one thing, beloved, that one day is with the Lord as a thousand years, and a thousand years as one day.

9 The Lord is not slow concerning his promise, as some count slowness; but is patient with us, not wishing that any should perish, but that all should come to repentance.

10 But the day of the Lord will come as a thief in the night; in which the heavens will pass away with a great noise, and the elements will be dissolved with fervent heat, and the earth and the works that are in it will be burned up.

11 Therefore since all these things will be destroyed like this, what kind of people ought you to be in holy living and godliness,

12 looking for and earnestly desiring the coming of the day of God, which will cause the burning heavens to be dissolved, and the elements will melt with fervent heat?

13 But, according to his promise, we look for new heavens and a new earth, in which righteousness dwells.

14 Therefore, beloved, seeing that you look for these things, be diligent to be found in peace, without defect and blameless in his sight.

15 Regard the patience of our Lord as salvation; even as our beloved brother Paul also, according to the wisdom given to him, wrote to you;

16 as also in all of his letters, speaking in them of these things. In those, there are some things that are hard to understand, which the ignorant and unsettled twist, as they also do to the other Scriptures, to their own destruction.

17 You therefore, beloved, knowing these things beforehand, beware, lest being carried away with the error of the wicked, you fall from your own steadfastness.

18 But grow in the grace and knowledge of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ. To him be the glory both now and forever. Amen.

Recap

The message in order, in a few minutes of reading.

This message worked through Psalm 1 and Psalm 2 together as preparation for an upcoming series in Hebrews. Pastor Mark traced a Hebrew literary structure running through both psalms and showed how it points forward to Jesus as the anointed king, priest, and prophet. The sermon ended by connecting that structure to the word "Abba" and the invitation to become a child of God.

What was said

Pastor Mark opened by noting that he has been building toward Hebrews for several weeks. Because most people in the church have grown up in the age of grace, he wanted to steep the congregation in the Old Testament soil that Hebrews grows out of. Psalm 1 and Psalm 2 are the ground he chose, partly because Psalm 2 is quoted more than almost any other Old Testament passage in the New Testament.

He walked through Psalm 1 using what he called a chiastic or ABBA structure, borrowing the Swedish pop group as a memory device. The first movement is dissociation from the wicked, the man who does not walk in the counsel of the wicked, stand in the path of sinners, or sit with scoffers. The second movement is association with God, the man whose delight is in the instruction of the Lord and who meditates on it day and night.

At the center of the psalm stands a contrast: the righteous man is like a tree firmly planted by streams of water, yielding fruit and never withering. The wicked are like chaff the wind drives away. The psalm then mirrors its opening, returning to God's perspective rather than earth's, with the Lord knowing the way of the righteous because, Pastor Mark said, Jesus walked that way himself in complete submission and without sin.

Psalm 2 runs the same ABBA pattern but on a larger stage. The first movement shows the nations, understood not as lines on a map but as family lines descending from Noah, conspiring together against the Lord and against his anointed, saying they want to throw off every cord that binds them to God. Pastor Mark said this has always been the condition of those outside God's people, and it is still visible today.

God's response from heaven, the second movement, is not panic. He who sits in the heavens laughs, and then speaks: "I have installed my king upon Zion, my holy mountain." The decree that follows, "You are my son, today I have begotten you," is the line that the author of Hebrews returns to repeatedly. Pastor Mark described it as a split-range prophecy, already fulfilled in Jesus's first coming as the one who came to seek and save the lost, and still to be fulfilled when Jesus returns to judge.

The psalm closes with a warning and an invitation running together. Earthly rulers are called to show discernment, to worship the Lord with reverence, to do homage to the Son before his wrath is kindled, and then the final line: "How blessed are all those who take refuge in him." Pastor Mark tied this back to Psalm 1's opening word, "blessed," showing the two psalms ending and beginning in the same place.

He finished by tracing the word "Abba" from Jesus in the garden, sweating and anguished, saying "Abba, Father, not what I will but whatever you will," through Paul in Galatians and Romans, and into John's statement that to as many as received Christ, he gave the right to become children of God. The whole structure, the choosing of sides, the dissociation from wickedness, the association with God, and the rule of the Messiah, comes down to whether a person cries out "Abba, Father" or does not.

Doing a Bible study?

Here is a guide we have prepared for you: the passages in order, questions for the group, and room to write.

  1. The pastor walked through Psalm 1 as a description of the righteous rather than a list of rules, saying it shows who the righteous are, not just what they do. How does that distinction change the way you read passages like this one?
  2. Psalm 1 puts the righteous person alongside a tree firmly planted by streams of water and the wicked person alongside chaff blown by the wind. Which image do you find yourself identifying with most honestly right now, and why?

0:05 Good morning, everyone. How are you? Good
0:09 to see you this morning. What do you say we stand and we begin by singing? As you're standing, I'll share a verse from Psalm eight. When I consider the heavens, the works of your fingers, the moon and the stars for which you've set in place, what is mankind that you're mindful of them, human beings that you care for them? Lord, our lord, how majestic is your name in all the earth.
0:30 Let's sing of it.
0:54 How majestic is your name and all here. Let's sing that again. Oh, oh, I know How majestic is your name and all the earth. And we behold, we behold the rising sun. Earth awakes.
1:25 Your hope has come. We look to you. We long for you, oh Lord. We behold the breaking Oh, oh, our Lord. How majestic is your name and all the earth?
2:03 And we behold the falling rain. We behold the falling rain like waters rise. Flood this place, we reach for you. We cling to you, oh, Lord. Oh, our Lord.
2:21 Oh, our lord. Oh, our lord. How majestic is your name and all the earth. And oh, your name. Oh, your name is a light and darkness.
2:40 Oh, your name is a word of truth. Oh, your name. Oh, your name. Let's sing that together. Oh, your name is a light and darkness.
2:56 Oh, your name is a word of truth. Oh, your name. Oh, your name. Oh, our lord. Oh, our lord.
3:12 Oh, oh, our
3:58 Amen. Y'all can have a seat. Is this thing on? Can you hear me? Okay.
4:05 We've got a few announcements this morning. Not as many as last week, I don't think. Monday nights at first B.
4:10 Yes, we're on tomorrow. Felix and and Guadalupe are are cooking dinner and it's always delicious. It's at six and we are in songs and Psalms. So Songs and Psalms,
4:23 06:00 in the fellowship hall.
4:25 That's right.
4:25 Meal music and a message tomorrow night, Felix Guadalupe are cooking. Fantastic. Immigrant hope is still I've gotten texts lately. Are they still collecting shoes? Yes.
4:33 They're still collecting shoes. They are partway to their goal. I won't say how far of 25,000 pairs and that's a lot of them. So immigrant hope is collecting shoes, dear. Still, we are going to Gillette on a mission trip.
4:48 So it's a stateside mission trip, but it's a long drive, but it's gonna be fun. So we have the van, and we have a pickup truck going too, and that's happening July 10 through the thirteenth. We will leave on the tenth from here, and we will get back on the thirteenth. But here's the plan. Two main days of work being the eleventh and twelfth.
5:09 We have a list of everything that needs to happen there, and the supplies will be there. We're taking the tools with us, so we should be able to get that. If you wanna go, if you're skilled or unskilled, does not matter. If you wanna go, let me know afterwards or let Gary know. Gary, would you stand for a second?
5:23 You can let me know or let Gary know, and we'll get you on the list of people that are getting the information about it. And it'd be fun to go. Bless our brothers and sisters up in Gillette. Turning Points annual fundraising gala is happening on the eleventh of this July, and it's happening at 05:30 at the Gill Ranch down past Shooting Iron Ranches, and Melissa Oden is the speaker. That ought to be a really good good time to get together and kinda encourage one another in that.
5:58 This is an interesting one. So draw near. Every last Sunday of the month, it's usually the fourth, but this is the fifth. Our Lady of the Mountains has Cari Miller and Florine is playing and we have a few other people from different churches around the valley. They're meeting at Our Lady of the Mountains, Catholic Church, and singing praises to God.
6:17 It's actually happening tonight, Sunday, June 30 6PM at OLM right over there. It's just a few blocks away. Fun time. I went the last time and it's the music is good. So, do y'all know Karim Miller?
6:30 You know, she is Karim Miller Jagger. She is going be playing tonight there and Christine Schuller, one of our faves too. This will be fun. If you miss a message, you can find them. They're on the Internet.
6:41 If you wanna go back and get to something, I've been building towards Hebrews. Today, we're gonna keep on building Psalms in there. Connect hour is happening between services right down the hall. That happens about ten ish and I think that's it. There is one more announcement I want to make.
6:59 Let me breathe for a second. VBS was this week, and it was fantastic. Is there somebody here? Is Liz here? She's probably taking care of Young and somewhere.
7:09 That's what she does. Liz, would you like to give a report? We we arrange everything so that it's seamless. Right? It's always just smooth and seamless and everybody knows what to expect.
7:25 We have a click track. Not really. Thank you. I would not do it justice. I showed up in a yellow shirt one day, and I looked like a poser because I didn't have hardly anything to do with this.
7:38 He did not. No. VBS was awesome. If you volunteered, do wanna raise your hand real quick or stand up even? It was awesome.
7:48 We had around 40 volunteers. Thank you. A 112 kids, 30 of whom do not claim a home church at all. And, I didn't talk to miss Crystal to get our full report of how many kids gave their life to Christ this week, but it was up there in the double digits. So praise God.
8:12 We had so much fun, and God is good.
8:15 Thank you. Thank you very much. And thank you for thank you for coming up to tell us about it too, Liz. They did a great job. It was just smooth as could be.
8:27 And two hours after it was over, it was no longer decorated like we were on a mission to the outer space. So it was pretty amazing. Anything else, Carl? That's it. Would you all stand up and greet one another?
8:39 And we'll bring you back together with a peppy little song.
9:49 Spirit of the living God. Spirit of the living God. Come found fresh on me. Come wake me from my sleep. Roll through the caverns of my soul.
10:19 Pour me to overflow. Oh,
10:31 Alright. Let's sing Awaken My Soul. Awaken
10:37 My Soul. Come on in. To worship with all your strength.
10:58 Spirit of the living
10:59 God. Spirit of the living God. Come fall to overflow.
11:29 Let's sing spirit. Come and fill this place. We'll make it our prayers.
12:14 Spirit of spirit of the living God, come fall afresh on me. Come wake me from my sleep. Blown through the caverns of my soul, poured me to overflow, to overflow.
13:02 I share a verse from Romans 15 that says, I pray that God the source of hope. Catch that, God is the source of hope, will fill you completely with joy and peace because you trust in him. Isn't that amazing? As we trust in him, what comes from that? Joy and peace from the God of hope.
13:25 Then you will overflow with confident hope through the power of the Holy Spirit. Let's pray on that. Lord, I pray for more trust that develops more peace and more joy and more hope in your church in us believers. In Jesus name, amen.
13:55 Seated above and thrown in the father's throne. Destined to die, poured out for all my kind. God's only son, perfect and spotless one. He never sinned but suffered his if he did. And all authority is his.
14:32 And all authority, every power in hand speaking the father's plan, sending a salt light in this broken land. And all the glory, every victory of all our praise. You overcame Jesus awesome and and powerful ever. Awesome and great is your name. And you all came and we will overcome.
18:03 From first John four four, the one who is in you is greater than the one who is in the world. Lord, we thank you for the authority that you have over everything, that you are sovereign and good, that you are in control of all things, or that we will overcome. Sometimes it may seem like we are defeated, but we're not. Truly, the victory is yours. The victory has been won, and we will overcome by your sacrifice and our testimony, our testimony of our love and our faith in you.
18:36 In Jesus' name, amen.
20:03 I hear my mocking voice. All now among the skies. It was I cannot give in answer, but this I know with all my heart. His wounds have paid my
22:09 Would you pray with me? God, we thank you for this beautiful week that you've given. We thank you lord for breath in our lungs. We thank you that you continue to give, lord. That's just who you are.
22:24 It's how you are and God, we wanna we wanna be like you. We want to be godly. Oh, to be able to forget offenses and throw em as far as the east is from the West. Lord, we long to be godly. Lord, you're good and you've given and the things that you've given are good lord and you sustain us and we ask lord that you would through these gifts that we're putting in the plates right now.
22:55 The gifts that you've given to us and we give em back to say, lord, spread this around and give your good gospel to others. We pray that you would advance your word and your kingdom, lord, particularly here on earth. May it be lord as it is in heaven. In Jesus name, we pray. Amen.
23:26 God I look to you I won't be overwhelmed give me vision to see things like you do God I look to you you have my help come strong give me wisdom you know just what to do
27:52 Amen. Thank you. Thank you, DD. And the band Alright. This morning, we are up to, well, I keep, I say that all the time because we're up to something, aren't we?
28:10 This is a one two punch this morning, alright? This is not our standard. We have been in the New Testament for a long time now. Six and a half years just going through it in order. We're finished with second Peter.
28:20 We're headed towards Hebrews but in between, I've been wanting to study. Honestly, I've been wanting to study. Everybody that has been in a Bible study here in the past three or four years. Hey, has studied Hebrews. It's like every Bible study studied Hebrews and it's going to be like preaching in front of a seminary crowd.
28:39 So, I want to study and get ahead of you a little bit but the one two punch this morning is do you all remember this? I never actually boxed but I did like rock em sock em robots and a one two punch typically is a left jab and a right cross, It's kind of a finishing thing, so we're going to try to finish this this morning. Didn't box much. We only had one pair of boxing gloves and there were two brothers. I'm a lot bigger and two and a half years separate us and we had a one pair of boxing gloves.
29:11 So, he got the right hand. We're both right handed and I got the left hand. The one two punch. Psalm one and Psalm two. It's two Psalms in one morning this morning.
29:22 So, there's just six verses in Psalm one. We're going to study a scheme kind of that is present in both Psalm one and Psalm two and I enjoyed this this week. I really have enjoyed the Psalms and Songs series that Carl's been doing on Monday nights and it's good. It's really really good to praise God and like Didi singing this last song that we just did, she starts out singing by herself like David last week in Psalm 34 and then he says, let us exalt his name together. There's something about praising God together.
29:57 That is really, really powerful. So, Psalm one and Psalm two, this is in preparation for Hebrews because most of us having grown up in this age, you know, the age of grace. In the church age, however you want to put it, the last times. If you've grown up now, you might not have nearly as much appreciation for the book of Hebrews as the people it was originally intended for. So, I'm trying to steep us a little bit.
30:25 Psalm 34 last week and then Psalm one and two this week. Psalm two is quoted multiple times and there are tons of illusions to it even when it's not quoted. So, Psalm one and two, here we go. Psalm one, New American Standard Version of the Bible for this one. How blessed is the man who does not walk in the council of the wicked?
30:46 He doesn't take the advice from wicked people nor stand in the path of sinners. That doesn't mean standing in the pathway trying to stop them, okay? It's meaning standing in the path with them where they stand. Standing in the path of sinners, being on the way of sin is what that's alluding to. How blessed is the man who does not walk in the council of the wicked nor stand in the path of sinners nor sit in the seat of scoffers.
31:17 We just had finished second Peter and it said that in the last days, there would come those who would be scoffing at you for believing the truth. So, this is the do nots right here. Blessed is the man who does not do these things. Before we go further, y'all know who this is? Well, here are their names.
31:38 Benny Anderson, Annie Fried Lindstad, Agnatha Foxdog, and Bjorn Ubias. Does that help? Abba. Yeah. Her name's Frieda.
31:51 It doesn't work nearly as well as this FBBA or ABBF, but Abba, that's Abba. Abba. The Swedish supergroup Abba. Yeah. This is a weird one.
32:01 I know. Mnemonic device, hopefully. We've started off here. Psalm one, how blessed is a man who does not walk in the council of the wicked nor stand in the path of sinners nor sit in the seat of scoffers. I'd say this is the A of an ABBA scheme and if you've studied the Old Testament or the Psalms very much, you know that there are a lot of there's a lot of Hebrew parallelism what it's called and so they'll start in one place and they'll end in that same place and as they get towards the center and they build out from the middle.
32:34 It's weird for us. We don't think that. We think more foundationally, I think and then go up from there but dissociation from the wicked. How blessed is the man who dissociates himself from the council of the wicked and the pathway that they take and he doesn't sit with them and just scoff, okay? So, that's dissociation from the wicked.
32:54 The next one, this next verse is the B section, I'd say, but his delight is in the law of the Lord in Torah. Torah, you can look at Torah officially as the first five books of the Bible but I think that when Torah is used in this sense, it's the instruction of God, right? I mean, this is in itself scripture now but when they wrote this Psalm, when the Psalm was first sung or first recited, they might not have considered it that the holy and authoritative word of God. It is but they might not have considered that. So, they're looking back to Torah, the definite instruction of the Lord.
33:36 His delight is in the law of the Lord. His delight is in the instruction of God. And in his instruction and in his meditation and in the in the way of God, in the Torah, he meditates day and night. Oh, so this is the things that the righteous do. I would say, it's association with God.
34:02 So, this is the B section of an ABBA chastic structure if you will. How blessed is the man who does not walk in the council of the wicked nor stand in the path of sinners nor sit in the seat of scoffers but big turn right there. His delight is in the instruction or the law of the Lord. I I I keep going to instruction because in our day and time, law, when you say law, it just takes on a whole different meaning because we put it in the courts and not just in life. In the way that things are and if it comes from God, who is the author of life?
34:39 His delight is in the law of the Lord, the instruction of God in Torah and his law, he meditates day and night and night. If you were of the original audience for this and you knew that you were one of the chosen people of God, Israel. You were one of the Hebrews. You were one of the Jews. His set apart chosen people and you read this, you would hold on to Torah very very tightly.
35:06 That's what it says. You should be studying this. You should be living by this. You should find out from Genesis, Exodus, Leviticus, Deuteronomy, and Numbers. You should find out the way of God and you should walk in it.
35:19 They have different experience of the Holy Spirit at this time but it was something that was old covenant but it was a covenant that God made with his chosen people. How blessed is a man who does not walk in the council of the wicked nor stand in the path of sinners nor sit in the seat of scoffers but his delight is in the law of the Lord and in his law, he meditates day and night. Okay, that's the A and the B. So, we're right up to there in Abba, alright? I would say that Psalm three is different.
35:53 I don't think it's the B yet again but it's right in the center here. He will be like a tree. This is the righteous. He will be like a tree firmly planted by streams of water. By the way, there are three trees that went up right in front of the church this week.
36:10 Did y'all see em when you came in? Did y'all know that Cache Creek from up there to Karnes Meadow goes up under Kelly? It's in a big old pipe up under Kelly. That means nothing but I just thought that was funny. It'll be like a tree firmly planted by streams of water.
36:26 Which yields fruit in its season and its leaf does not wither and then whatever he does, he prospers. He's content. He's content in whatever is going on. So, we're right there in between the AB and the BA and this C is really opened up a contrast between the righteous and the wicked. In fact, if you have a new American Standard Version, the Bible, the heading for this is the right and the wicked contrasted It turns very quickly.
36:55 The wicked are not so. Again, like the butt of the first verse, you know, the righteous one does not do this but does do this and then it says, he'll be like a tree firmly planted by streams of water which yields its fruit and its season and its leaf does not wither and then whatever he does, he will prosper that prosper. I don't know as much about Hebrew verbs as I do about Greek verbs but it's an imperfect forward looking. He will continually be prospering. The wicked are not so.
37:28 But they are like chaff which the wind drives away. There's a big difference in between a piece of sagebrush that is planted and growing and still green, grayish green as they are, and a tumbleweed that is blowing across the road in front of you on Highway 80, right? They're like chaff which the wind drives away. Whatever way the wind is blowing is the way they're going. Therefore, because of this, the wicked will not stand in the judgment.
37:57 My goodness, we have seen judgment over and over and over again for the past few weeks in Peter and Peter is just affirming something that has always been true. There are but two paths. There are either the righteous or the wicked. Therefore, the wicked will not stand in the judgment nor sinners among the assembly of the righteous. So, that's the contrast right there.
38:26 Now, we're back now. Right there. This the B section. Last verse, that's why we're doing one and two. For the Lord knows the way of the righteous.
38:37 Think about that. The Lord knows the way of the righteous. Jesus is lord, right? Jesus is lord and he knows the way of the righteous. How does he know it?
38:50 I know this was written a thousand years ahead of time, maybe more than that. He walked it. He walked it in complete submission to the spirit of God throughout his life. He was tempted in every way just as we're tempted. Yet, he was without sin.
39:04 The Lord knows the way of the righteous. You look at it as God looking down and seeing the way and seeing how hard it is but you can, I think, get a fuller experience as a New Testament and this age person, you can look and say, wow? Thousand years beforehand, they're already writing down that Jesus knew the way of the righteous because he walked it in humility and in submission to the spirit of God, in obedience, the whole time. So, that would be the B section. This little thing is not cooperating, Blake.
39:48 There it is. B, God's association with the godly. So, do we see it before? It is a disassociation from the wicked and an association with God and now, after that contrast in the middle, we see it coming back around and now, this is God's association. So, it's just shifted perspective from Earth to heaven.
40:09 God's association with the godly. For the Lord knows the way of the righteous. And then it ends off Psalm one just like this but the way of the wicked will perish. So, from the very beginning of Psalms, we have these two paths. God's removal of the wicked.
40:31 It is the casting out. It is eternal separation from God. We see that from other books. But this is a very simple six line song or poem that points toward this. It's also first.
40:47 Now, what's the first hymn in most hymn books? Just wondering if y'all know. Holy, holy, holy. It's almost always first or second. It's the way it is.
40:54 This was first in their in their list, you know? This is the way it looks if you turn it up sideways. Hey, B. And then there's that contrast in the middle, firmly planted by streams of water, yielding fruit in its season, or blown about by every wind and will not stand in the judgment. We often say it's not a list and do's and don'ts.
41:22 This is just a description of the righteous. The righteous will not do this. They will do this. There's a contrast and then God knows the way of the righteous. He's walked it and the way of the wicked will perish.
41:41 So, that's it. This association dissociation from the wicked, association with God, and then change in perspective, God's association with the godly, God's removal of the wicked. Alright. This is Psalm two. Here we go.
41:56 Just forward. It's Independence Day. Do all know that? Coming up this weekend. So, whenever we see nations in the Bible, the way that we think about nations and the way that they thought about nations is really kind of different.
42:14 We see geopolitical boundaries and little lines on a map, right? That's what we see and we see power over that particular space of the globe. Nations, in fact, if you got a King James Bible, it'll say hidden right there. It's anybody that wasn't Jewish. Any anybody that was not a part of God's chosen people were everybody else and everybody else up through King James time, we called Heathens.
42:44 Now, we call em nations. Nation is good because it's built from a place like from the line of Shem, from Abraham through Noah, the line of Shem, and it goes forward branching out and that's a family, right? It's a family. Why are the nations in an uproar? Why are the peoples, peoples devising a vain thing?
43:23 The kings of the earth, these are the people in power over that. The kings of the earth take their stand and the rulers take counsel together. They plot and they get together. Do you agree with this? You see where this is going?
43:34 This is always been the way that it is on Earth. Whether it's a family or a nation. I'm trying to remove you out of the geopolitical and put you just into the Old Testament time and seeing that of what family you were was really important. The genealogies are in the Bible because it was really, really, really, really important to them. It's not as important to us.
43:51 A lot of us here disconnected with family, some by choice. We have separated ourselves from our family. Some have come out because God called. Some came seeking something. Mountains and beaches draw people, right?
44:07 Why are the nations in an uproar and the peoples devising a vain thing? The kings of the earth take their stand and the rulers take counsel together against the Lord, against the Lord. Capital L. That is Jesus, right? Against the Lord, oh I guess it's God in this case, excuse me.
44:28 Against the Lord and against his anointed because that's definitely pointed. Psalm two is considered a royal Psalm and when they sang Psalm two, they were looking forward to the next Davidic king. The next one in the line of David because that line would be established forever and he was going to conquer and everybody was looking forward to that being Israel would conquer everybody, okay? This family that traced its line through all of those. This family that has grown.
44:57 There was a way in. You could be adopted in and they had rights foreseeing that happen but everybody else, why is it that the hidden that everybody else is always in an uproar and all of the peoples are devising this vain thing. It's vain because they've set themselves up no matter who they are. Kings of the Earth, the kings of the Earth take their stand and the rulers lesser than kings but still rulers. They take counsel together against who?
45:22 Against God. Is that a smart move? No. When Paschal was itty bitty, she's like two years old. We went to a playground.
45:29 There was a boy who got on a slide and he put his head downwards. He had gone down it every way he could. He put his head downwards. It was laying on his back. He's about seven or eight and he started just before he went.
45:40 Paxo said, is that a good decision? He flipped over. He took the word of a two year old. You you're right. You're probably right.
45:54 What happens when I get to the bottom? Kings of the earth take their stand. The rulers take counsel together against the Lord and against his anointed saying this, let us tear their feathers apart. Anything that has kept us to good, anything that has kept us towards God which they're shunning not as being good. Saying, let us tear their feathers apart and cast away their cords from us.
46:19 Why should we be saddled with this? Why should we have to continue? We don't believe that. We're against that and then set themselves up against it. Whoo.
46:30 Do you see it happening? Why are the nations in an uproar? And the peoples devising a vain thing. The kings of the earth take their stand and the rulers take counsel together against the Lord and against his anointing saying, let us tear their feathers apart and cast away their cords from us. So, that's the A section right there.
46:50 This one doesn't have a C contrast in the middle. This is ABBA. The rebellious nations and nations, like I said, at the time, was not considered to be geopolitical. I know that you think of it that way. I wore a red, white, blue shirt this morning.
47:05 I know. It's Independence Day. He's saying that if you are not on God's side, you are part of the rebellious families of the earth. Next, verse four says, he who sits in the heavens laughs. The Lord scoffs at them Do we like to think of God that way?
47:29 You've heard the old saying that if you want to hear God laugh, tell him your plans. That's basically what this is saying. We plot together and we take counsel together and we say, let's throw off everything. There's no reason why we should be stuck in that superstition. Sorry.
47:47 What's the difference? We can live the way we want to live. What's inside of me is all I need to know. And he who sits in the heavens laughs and the Lord scoffs at them and then, he will speak to them in his anger and he will terrify them in his fury. Saying, it's interesting how the A section had a saying, let us tear off the feathers and throw them down and then, this says what God is going to say but as for me, I have installed my capital M, capital K, king.
48:27 As for me, God says, I have installed my king, Jesus, upon Zion, my holy mountain. This is the way it is. Counsel or not. Take your stand or not. What is going to be is based on what I say.
48:44 As for me, I've installed my king upon Zion, my holy mount. Now, the original folks that would have heard this knew where Zion Mountain was. They knew exactly where it was and they knew they were of the chosen people of God and so when they sang it, they're looking forward to a day when they would conquer, Take over everything, not just sea to shine and see. Everything. All around everywhere.
49:11 I'd say that this is God's rule in heaven because it does say, but he who sits in heaven laughs. So, God's rule in heaven and then, we get to the turn here and it's a quote and this is the quote that is quoted several times, three or four times in Hebrews and it's also mentioned more than any other Old Testament quote, okay? In the New Testament. I will surely tell of the decree what God has said. I will surely tell of the decree of the Lord.
49:47 He said to me, capital M, you are my capital M, capital S, son. Oh my. I will surely tell of the decree of the Lord. He said to me, you are my son and I have begotten you. Now, we capitalize names of God in the Bible.
50:06 They were not originally capitalized. I always make the distinction to help us keep up. I will surely tell of the decree of the Lord. He said to me, you are my son. Today, I have begotten you and this had to be confusing for them when they got that.
50:24 How how exactly does that work? So, the author of Hebrews says, this is exactly how that works. Old Testament and New Testament concealed, New Testament, Old Testament revealed. I will surely tell you the decree of the Lord. He said to me, you are my son.
50:39 Today, I have begotten you. This is Messiah, the anointed one. Ask of me, God said, and I will surely give you all of the families as your inheritance and the very ends of the earth as your possession. That's interesting all the New Testament writers that pick up and say, you'll be my disciples. Jesus even said it.
51:03 Jerusalem, Judea, Samaria, and to the uttermost part, to the very extent of the whole earth. Ask of me and I will surely give you the families of the earth, the nations as your inherit ance and the very ends of the earth as your possession and this is rather shocking and you, Jesus, shall break them with a rod of iron and you shall shatter them like earthenware. He came to seek and to save those who are lost, right? He gave that opportunity. So, this is I think an example of a split range prophecy where there's something that's happening.
51:38 Jesus has been installed as prophet, priest, and king forever. And you're either going to be on his side or it's going to be the end of you. You shall break them with a rod of iron. That Jesus coming back in judgement is still to come but it is to come. That's the B section.
52:05 Again, we've turned the corner. This is God's decree. I will surely tell you of the decree of the Lord, Jesus said. He said to me, God said to Jesus, you are my son. Today, I have begotten you.
52:18 That is not to be confused with. He's a created being. He's not. Eternally existent. He is.
52:26 Today, I begotten you ask of me and I will surely give the nations as your inheritance and the very ends of the earth as your possession. There will be people from every tribe, tongue, and nation. Who will come into and under his authority into the family of God by the way of Jesus. And you shall break them with a rod of iron and you shall shatter them like earthenware. There will be those that don't.
52:53 This is God's decree. Psalm two ten goes on to say this, now therefore, because of that, I love this. Now, therefore, because of all that, oh kings, little K, earthly rulers, whether you're the ruler of a nation or a family, a line of people, a line of thinking, an ideology. Now, therefore, oh kings, little K, show discernment. Think about it.
53:24 Is that a good decision? Take warning, oh judges of the earth. There is a judge. He came in mercy and in grace. He came in absolute humility, died the death that he did not deserve on a cross so that any who would believe would be a part of his family.
53:50 Now, therefore, oh king, show discernment, take warning, oh judges of the earth, and worship the Lord with reverence and rejoice but even rejoice with trembling. A fear of God is beginning of wisdom. Worship the Lord with reverence and rejoice with trembling and do homage to the son. In his humble visit here and the short life that he lived. He was without sin.
54:18 He made propitiation. Hebrews will say, for our sins. Do homage to the son that he not become angry and you perish in the way because those are the options. Either you bow the knee on this side to Jesus or you will perish. And then it says, for his wrath may soon be kindled.
54:41 Well, how can we listen to that? It's a thousand years old because it hadn't happened yet and it's coming, okay? Second Peter two nine and ten says, the Lord knows how to rescue the godly or the righteous from trials and to hold the unrighteous for punishment on the day of judgement and this is especially true of those who follow the corrupt desire of the flesh and despise authority. The kings get together and they say, let's throw off this oppressive thing. For his wrath may soon be kindled and then it ends up with, how blessed are all those who take refuge in him.
55:19 It's a solemn warning but it's the truth. I hit this one a couple weeks ago too. The Lord is not slow in keeping his promise. If you think, well, it hadn't happened yet. Come on.
55:29 That's just the old book of superstition. Aren't you making a bad decision here? Lord is not slow in keeping his promise as some understand slowness or slackness. Instead, he is patient with you. So, this is pointing and it's basically asking, which side are you on?
55:47 Which side are you on? And if you think, well, I don't know. Then, you've already made your your choice. He's not wanting anyone to perish but everyone to come to repentance. So, this comes back to A and I'd say, this is the rule of Messiah on Earth and it is to come but it can be now.
56:10 Are you are you with me? I said it once this time. This is amazing to me. The rule of Messiah on Earth. We look at it as future because there are still a lot of people who are plotting against and going against the things of God right now and we see it every day all the time and we feel like in temporal things, it seems like the wicked are prospering and everybody I know is a good person is not.
56:41 That's what it looks like but that verb that says, they shall prosper, they shall continually be prospering and content. Is there's not an end to that? It keeps on going forever. But there is a day when the wicked will be cut off and utterly so. The rebellious nations, God's rule in heaven, and then God's decree sets up for the rule of Messiah on Earth as prophet, as priest, as king.
57:10 We'll look into that in Hebrews starting next week, I pray. Now, if the only thing you think of when you leave here is the Swedish supergroup Abba, I am sorry. That's on me. Alright? But that scheme of the turn and seeing things happen is very common and often it starts at Earth and then it has that great reversal of heavenly perspective brought into it.
57:36 This is how that reversal happens. This word is Abba. It's Greek. It looks almost just like it was written in English, doesn't it? Abba.
57:45 And it's used three times in the New Testament. If you're saying, how can I be one of the righteous? How can I get to that? If you're telling me everybody starts off as wicked, they do and that if I choose not to decide, I've still made the choice and I'm sticking with wicked. This is what Jesus said in the garden at his greatest moment of temptation, tempted by the devil.
58:11 He did that forty days. In the garden, he's sweating and he's bleeding. Sweat drops of blood. And he's anguished and he's feeling the full weight of all the sin and he says, this is too much. This is too much.
58:31 He's absolutely hit by him. This is too much. His disciples are falling asleep and he was saying, Abba, father, Now, you probably heard that it's said that that's like daddy, it's a sweet papa and it is in Hebrew nowadays. It means papa or daddy but it's it means father. It's just an Aramaic.
58:52 It's a Hebraic language that Jesus spoke and he's saying, Abba, father, my father, specifically, my father or dad, daddy, patter father, all things are possible for you. Praise and you can see what he wants and he's removed this cup from me but he doesn't stop there. All of us are tempted. And we want our will and sometimes we pray for our will but I love what he did right here at the end and said, remove this cup from me yet, not what I will but whatever you will, That's what needs to happen. Let's do that.
59:37 Let's go with that and that's what he did. The cross was what it took for him but it's eternal exaltation forever and salvation for everyone who would believe in his name is what hinged on that. Galatians says, because you are sons, sons and daughters. God has sent forth the spirit of his son into our hearts crying, Abba, father. Jesus is interceding for us.
1:00:07 Hebrews will talk about his session. Seated at the right hand of God interceding for us as our priest forever. Abba, Father, your will be done in this life. Romans eight fifteen, Paul used it again and says, for you have not received the spirit of slavery which is leading to fear again, but you, because of your belief in Christ, have received the spirit of adoption as sons and daughters by which we cry out, Abba, father. John.
1:00:46 Oh, this is chronological order right there. Jesus said that first and Paul said it in Galatians. Paul said it in Romans and now John has this idea, who gets to call a father daddy? Father. As many as received him, as many as have received Christ, to them, he gave the right to become children of God and you can.
1:01:12 Because Jesus offered his sinless perfect life and took the punishment for your sin. As many as received him, to them, he gave the right to become children of God even to those who believe in his name and you might look and say, oh those double digits that she spoke of this morning in Bible school, they're kids. What do they know? Enough who are born not of blood nor of the will of the flesh nor of the will of man but of God, born from above I think that's the last lie. I started to call you Paul for some reason, Carl.
1:01:56 Seeming mighty apostolic this morning. Paul, come forward. And the band. Yeah. Not just Carl.
1:02:07 Would you all stand and we'll sing this last song? The only king forever. He he's not the only small k king which lasts for a little while and then they're gone. He's the only capital k king forever. Now, where is your citizenship gonna be?
1:02:25 I know this is Independence Day. Is your citizenship in your nation, your family, or is it in your God, the only king forever? The altar is open for prayer. If you'd like to talk to me, I'm available. I'll stop playing the bass and turn off my microphone but if you want to talk to me this week, I'm also available.
1:02:42 Sing it out.
1:02:56 Alright, our God. Our God, a firm foundation.
1:05:20 Alright. And we lift our banner high.
1:05:24 We lift our banner high. We lift
1:06:28 Amen. One more thing I forgot during the announcement. River Crossing, that's now Gateway. Mike Atkins last Sunday there and they're send sending him away doing a send off party like a farewell. That's happened and started about thirty minutes ago but if you want to go, I'm going to go.
1:06:48 If y'all wanted to go down there and just say goodbye to Mike, I think that'd be good. Give him a blessing as he heads out from this valley. Here we go with the benediction. God is our mighty fortress. He is always ready to help in times of trouble.
1:07:03 God, may we realize your kingship and submit to it and may we find ourselves within your camp. Amen.
