Realize This: The Last Days Are Here

February 3, 2019 · 2 Timothy

Scripture referenced 8 passages

The passage this message was preached from, in full, with every other passage it reached for.

  • Psalm 139:1-7 read aloud as an opening prayer and song, about God knowing everything about us and His presence we cannot escape

1 Yahweh, you have searched me, and you know me.

2 You know my sitting down and my rising up. You perceive my thoughts from afar.

3 You search out my path and my lying down, and are acquainted with all my ways.

4 For there is not a word on my tongue, but, behold, Yahweh, you know it altogether.

5 You hem me in behind and before. You laid your hand on me.

6 This knowledge is beyond me. It’s lofty. I can’t attain it.

7 Where could I go from your Spirit? Or where could I flee from your presence?

2 Timothy 3:1-16

the main preaching text for the sermon, covering the full chapter in two paragraphs

1 But know this, that in the last days, grievous times will come.

2 For men will be lovers of self, lovers of money, boastful, arrogant, blasphemers, disobedient to parents, unthankful, unholy,

3 without natural affection, unforgiving, slanderers, without self-control, fierce, not lovers of good,

4 traitors, headstrong, conceited, lovers of pleasure rather than lovers of God;

5 holding a form of godliness, but having denied its power. Turn away from these, also.

6 For some of these are people who creep into houses, and take captive gullible women loaded down with sins, led away by various lusts,

7 always learning, and never able to come to the knowledge of the truth.

8 Even as Jannes and Jambres opposed Moses, so do these also oppose the truth; men corrupted in mind, who concerning the faith are rejected.

9 But they will proceed no further. For their folly will be evident to all men, as theirs also came to be.

10 But you did follow my teaching, conduct, purpose, faith, patience, love, steadfastness,

11 persecutions, and sufferings: those things that happened to me at Antioch, Iconium, and Lystra. I endured those persecutions. The Lord delivered me out of them all.

12 Yes, and all who desire to live godly in Christ Jesus will suffer persecution.

13 But evil men and impostors will grow worse and worse, deceiving and being deceived.

14 But you remain in the things which you have learned and have been assured of, knowing from whom you have learned them.

15 From infancy, you have known the holy Scriptures which are able to make you wise for salvation through faith, which is in Christ Jesus.

16 Every Scripture is God-breathed and profitable for teaching, for reproof, for correction, and for instruction in righteousness,

quoted to clarify that the love of money, not money itself, is a root of all sorts of evil

10 For the love of money is a root of all kinds of evil. Some have been led astray from the faith in their greed, and have pierced themselves through with many sorrows.

Acts 14:1-26

cited as the record of Paul's persecutions at Antioch, Iconium and Lystra, including the stoning

1 In Iconium, they entered together into the synagogue of the Jews, and so spoke that a great multitude both of Jews and of Greeks believed.

2 But the disbelieving Jews stirred up and embittered the souls of the Gentiles against the brothers.

3 Therefore they stayed there a long time, speaking boldly in the Lord, who testified to the word of his grace, granting signs and wonders to be done by their hands.

4 But the multitude of the city was divided. Part sided with the Jews, and part with the apostles.

5 When some of both the Gentiles and the Jews, with their rulers, made a violent attempt to mistreat and stone them,

6 they became aware of it, and fled to the cities of Lycaonia, Lystra, Derbe, and the surrounding region.

7 There they preached the Good News.

8 At Lystra a certain man sat, impotent in his feet, a cripple from his mother’s womb, who never had walked.

9 He was listening to Paul speaking, who, fastening eyes on him, and seeing that he had faith to be made whole,

10 said with a loud voice, “Stand upright on your feet!” He leaped up and walked.

11 When the multitude saw what Paul had done, they lifted up their voice, saying in the language of Lycaonia, “The gods have come down to us in the likeness of men!”

12 They called Barnabas “Jupiter”, and Paul “Mercury”, because he was the chief speaker.

13 The priest of Jupiter, whose temple was in front of their city, brought oxen and garlands to the gates, and would have made a sacrifice along with the multitudes.

14 But when the apostles, Barnabas and Paul, heard of it, they tore their clothes, and sprang into the multitude, crying out,

15 “Men, why are you doing these things? We also are men of like passions with you, and bring you good news, that you should turn from these vain things to the living God, who made the sky, the earth, the sea, and all that is in them;

16 who in the generations gone by allowed all the nations to walk in their own ways.

17 Yet he didn’t leave himself without witness, in that he did good and gave you rains from the sky and fruitful seasons, filling our hearts with food and gladness.”

18 Even saying these things, they hardly stopped the multitudes from making a sacrifice to them.

19 But some Jews from Antioch and Iconium came there, and having persuaded the multitudes, they stoned Paul, and dragged him out of the city, supposing that he was dead.

20 But as the disciples stood around him, he rose up, and entered into the city. On the next day he went out with Barnabas to Derbe.

21 When they had preached the Good News to that city, and had made many disciples, they returned to Lystra, Iconium, and Antioch,

22 confirming the souls of the disciples, exhorting them to continue in the faith, and that through many afflictions we must enter into God’s Kingdom.

23 When they had appointed elders for them in every assembly, and had prayed with fasting, they commended them to the Lord, on whom they had believed.

24 They passed through Pisidia, and came to Pamphylia.

25 When they had spoken the word in Perga, they went down to Attalia.

26 From there they sailed to Antioch, from where they had been committed to the grace of God for the work which they had fulfilled.

Hebrews 10

mentioned in passing as the chapter CBS was studying, with a brief partial quote about drawing close without wavering in the confession of faith

1 For the law, having a shadow of the good to come, not the very image of the things, can never with the same sacrifices year by year, which they offer continually, make perfect those who draw near.

2 Or else wouldn’t they have ceased to be offered, because the worshipers, having been once cleansed, would have had no more consciousness of sins?

3 But in those sacrifices there is a yearly reminder of sins.

4 For it is impossible that the blood of bulls and goats should take away sins.

5 Therefore when he comes into the world, he says, “Sacrifice and offering you didn’t desire, but you prepared a body for me.

6 You had no pleasure in whole burnt offerings and sacrifices for sin.

7 Then I said, ‘Behold, I have come (in the scroll of the book it is written of me) to do your will, O God.’”

8 Previously saying, “Sacrifices and offerings and whole burnt offerings and sacrifices for sin you didn’t desire, neither had pleasure in them” (those which are offered according to the law),

9 then he has said, “Behold, I have come to do your will.” He takes away the first, that he may establish the second,

10 by which will we have been sanctified through the offering of the body of Jesus Christ once for all.

11 Every priest indeed stands day by day serving and often offering the same sacrifices, which can never take away sins,

12 but he, when he had offered one sacrifice for sins forever, sat down on the right hand of God;

13 from that time waiting until his enemies are made the footstool of his feet.

14 For by one offering he has perfected forever those who are being sanctified.

15 The Holy Spirit also testifies to us, for after saying,

16 “This is the covenant that I will make with them: ‘After those days,’ says the Lord, ‘I will put my laws on their heart, I will also write them on their mind;’” then he says,

17 “I will remember their sins and their iniquities no more.”

18 Now where remission of these is, there is no more offering for sin.

19 Having therefore, brothers, boldness to enter into the holy place by the blood of Jesus,

20 by the way which he dedicated for us, a new and living way, through the veil, that is to say, his flesh;

21 and having a great priest over God’s house,

22 let’s draw near with a true heart in fullness of faith, having our hearts sprinkled from an evil conscience, and having our body washed with pure water,

23 let us hold fast the confession of our hope without wavering; for he who promised is faithful.

24 Let us consider how to provoke one another to love and good works,

25 not forsaking our own assembling together, as the custom of some is, but exhorting one another; and so much the more, as you see the Day approaching.

26 For if we sin willfully after we have received the knowledge of the truth, there remains no more a sacrifice for sins,

27 but a certain fearful expectation of judgment, and a fierceness of fire which will devour the adversaries.

28 A man who disregards Moses’ law dies without compassion on the word of two or three witnesses.

29 How much worse punishment do you think he will be judged worthy of who has trodden under foot the Son of God, and has counted the blood of the covenant with which he was sanctified an unholy thing, and has insulted the Spirit of grace?

30 For we know him who said, “Vengeance belongs to me,” says the Lord, “I will repay.” Again, “The Lord will judge his people.”

31 It is a fearful thing to fall into the hands of the living God.

32 But remember the former days, in which, after you were enlightened, you endured a great struggle with sufferings;

33 partly, being exposed to both reproaches and oppressions; and partly, becoming partakers with those who were treated so.

34 For you both had compassion on me in my chains, and joyfully accepted the plundering of your possessions, knowing that you have for yourselves a better possession and an enduring one in the heavens.

35 Therefore don’t throw away your boldness, which has a great reward.

36 For you need endurance so that, having done the will of God, you may receive the promise.

37 “In a very little while, he who comes will come, and will not wait.

38 But the righteous will live by faith. If he shrinks back, my soul has no pleasure in him.”

39 But we are not of those who shrink back to destruction, but of those who have faith to the saving of the soul.

Recap

The message in order, in a few minutes of reading.

Pastor Ray opened 2 Timothy 3 by reading the whole chapter, two paragraphs at once, because leaving the congregation in the middle of the passage while he traveled to Kenya for two weeks felt wrong. The chapter gives two contrasting lists, and the sermon walked through both of them in order.

What was said

The first list comes from Paul's warning to Timothy: "Realize this, that in the last days, difficult times will come." Ray read through the full catalog that follows, lovers of self, lovers of money, boastful, arrogant, revilers, disobedient to parents, ungrateful, unholy, unloving, irreconcilable, malicious gossips, without self-control, brutal, haters of good, treacherous, reckless, conceited, lovers of pleasure rather than lovers of God. He paused on several of them to note that these are not new problems. The list was written around 64 or 65 AD, and every item on it is recognizable today.

A few entries got extra attention. "Revilers" carries the same root as blasphemy, the act of taking what God has called good and profaning it. Ray used marriage as an example: calling a God-given institution bad is a form of reviling. "Irreconcilable" was another one, a word you almost only hear today in the context of divorce, describing a hardness of heart that refuses to soften.

The list closes with people who "hold to a form of godliness" while denying its power. Ray said that sounds like someone who calls themselves spiritual but means only that they pursue inner peace on their own terms. He noted Paul's instruction to Timothy: avoid such people, and pastor others away from living like them.

Paul then names Jannes and Jambres, the Egyptian magicians who opposed Moses in Exodus. Their names do not appear in the Bible by name but show up in rabbinic literature, and they are understood to be the court magicians who replicated the early plagues. Ray's point was that they could do some of what Moses did, but not all of it, and eventually their folly was obvious to everyone watching. People who build their lives on the first list, he said, will eventually show themselves for what they are in the same way.

The second paragraph shifts to Timothy directly, and the tone changes completely. Paul tells him: you followed my teaching, my conduct, my purpose, my faith, my patience, my love, my perseverance, my persecutions, my sufferings. Ray set those two lists side by side. The second one includes persecutions and sufferings, which do not sound appealing, but they come from a life oriented toward God rather than self. He read Paul's plain statement that "all who desire to live godly in Christ Jesus will be persecuted," and said that when you put God first, you will run into people who tell you that is foolish.

The chapter closes with the passage on scripture: "All scripture is inspired by God and is profitable for teaching, for reproof, for correction, and for training in righteousness." Ray saved his longest comment for the word "adequate" in the final verse. He traced it back to a Greek root meaning ready for right now, fitted for the immediate present. His application was direct: whether you are a seasoned pastor or a new believer with a testimony, if you are in God's word, you are equipped for what God is asking of you today. That principle, he said, is also what will guide the team heading to Kenya to work alongside young pastors there who are just starting out with congregations.

Doing a Bible study?

Here is a guide we have prepared for you: the passages in order, questions for the group, and room to write.

  1. Pastor Ray read through a long list from 2 Timothy 3 describing how people will behave in the last days. Which items on that list surprised you most to see there, and why?
  2. Paul told Timothy to avoid people who hold to a form of godliness while denying its power. What do you think that kind of hollow godliness actually looks like in practice, and how do you tell it apart from the real thing?

0:01 Good morning, everybody. Good morning. How are you? Beautiful winter wonderland outside, isn't it? It really is pretty.
0:09 But I'm glad you're here. Glad you made it here safe. Would you stand up and we'll sing together? We'll make this our prayer, our our song. Let's start with a Psalm here.
0:18 Psalm one thirty nine, it says, oh Lord, you've examined my heart and you know everything about me. God knows everything about you right here, right as you are. Good or bad. You go before me and you follow me. You place your hand of blessing on my head.
0:31 Such knowledge is too wonderful for me, too great for me to understand. I can never escape from your spirit. Isn't that great? We may try to run away from the Lord but he is right there. I can never get away from your presence.
0:44 Thank God for that. Let's let this be our prayer and our song. Alright. As I wait, let's sing this part.
1:34 As I wait, heart of God me. And as I go, as I go, and God might have failed on my side
3:27 Let's sing of his life and his death.
4:43 I have a few announcements, and we have a baptism this morning too. A couple of baptisms this morning. So, y'all didn't miss a church Email about casual Sunday and we're not in a basketball tournament. It's just, this is the way we dress when we baptize. So this is the offer I do at least.
5:02 So I've got a few announcements. This is Monday nights are coming up tomorrow night. You wanna describe that Carl? And communion. So we're doing a Monday night kind of a musical special in a way.
5:18 If you are interested in in praying and praising God and going through Psalms and hymns and spiritual songs and interspersed with scripture and testimony and ended with communion. That's tomorrow night, Monday night. Meal music, message happening 06:00. At the same time, this thing's not clicking over there. Yeah, Monday nights.
5:39 There's a hippo, Carl's favorite animal. We are also going to Africa. That's to remind me of that. Tanya and Pascal and I and Carl are all going to Nakuru, Kenya, and we're leaving tomorrow after Monday night. So we're doing this special service, and then leaving out after that, we fly out from Salt Lake the next morning.
6:00 So would you be praying for us as we go that God would be very,
6:05 very
6:05 that we would sense his presence. We know he's omnipresent. We know he's omniscient, and we feel surrendered to the spirit to go and so we're excited about being there and being involved with the school and the churches of the area. So that's happening. Awana is also happening tomorrow night right here.
6:21 We gather in this room to begin with. 05:45, six ish is the start and they go till 07:30. And it is awesome. It's a good, good program for kids, little kids up to fifth grade. Young Life is looking for volunteers and leaders who love to connect with teenagers.
6:39 So you can get in touch with jacksonhole younglife dot org with Allie Lane. There's her phone number if you want that and you forget about it, it's in your bulletin too, the paper bulletins. We have a CBS prayer group. It's a Bible study. They're going through Hebrews right now.
6:56 What are you up to, Anne? How far along are you? Chapter 10. Oh, like one of my favorite passages in the whole of scripture is, let us draw close without wavering about the confession of our faith. It's so so good.
7:09 So, come on and join in with CBS. That's great. Oh, chapter 10 of Hebrews. Wonderful. 09:30 on Wednesday mornings or 06:30 in the evenings.
7:18 Turning Point has started up their baby bottle campaign. Do y'all know about this? Have you heard about it before? Yes. Most of you have heard about it before.
7:25 There are some baby bottles on the back table back there in the foyer. If you would, grab one of those and fill it with change or dollar bills or big dollar bills or whatever, checks if you want to, and return those back to us and we'll return them back to Turning Point. I think that's it. How long is this campaign going, Carolyn? One month.
7:45 Okay. One month. So get them in as quickly as you can. This is a major, major move fundraising wise. This is a major move forward with Turning Point every year.
7:54 So grab a baby bottle and fill it and bring it back. Precept classes on Thursday mornings at nine. They're studying through ACTS. And now we have baptism. So we have first of all, first candidate here is Aileen Marsteller.
8:19 And so a microphone here before we get in. Eileen, is there something that you'd like to say? You're making a statement today by being baptized, but
8:29 Yes. So I just wanted to say that I want to get baptized because I want to do this in obedience to God because all the things he's done for me and for his love. And second of all, I want to thank my parents for helping me in my Christian walk since the time I was saved, which was 03/01/2014 until now, and for helping me understand what baptism truly means and what God says about baptism, and for answering my questions that I had about baptism for those three years that I was saying no to baptism because I was letting fear control me. And this is the year that I decided that I wanted to get baptized, 2019 and that I was going to say yes to baptism and no to fear.
10:47 I'll be brief. Yeah. I just kinda look at this as a sort of a new start, just a commitment to living a a holier life, an outward testimony to an inward faith. Been wanting to do this for a while, and here's the opportunity. So thanks.
12:14 Let's sing Bring Your Tide. Every time I fall, every time I fall, there'll be those who call on this state. Well, that's okay. Because I hear the Lord send people's
16:09 Amen. Ain't that great truth in that song? There'll be days when we lose the battle but grace says it doesn't matter because the cross has already won the war. We may be fighting battles in here right now but Jesus has won everybody. Jesus has won that war already.
16:26 Amen. Another great song. Love this song. Second Timothy, I'm not ashamed for I know whom I have believed and I'm persuaded he is able to keep that which I've committed. That faith that you have put in Christ, that stands solid and good the day that you see Jesus in his return.
16:47 He will keep that faith that you have entrusted to him. Hold on to it. We pray on that. God, don't always know. We don't always know how this thing works.
20:11 Why this wondrous grace you would impart to us. How this saving faith you you you just give to us so freely. How the spirit moves and convinces us of of our sin and your righteousness or when you may come. We there are a lot of unknowns. But the thing we do know is that faith that we have entrusted, that faith that we have in you, that is good.
20:35 That is good. The day that we see you face to face, we're not gonna be standing with anybody else. It's gonna be you and I, you and I, you and us, with Christ as our mediator in between, pleading on our behalf. Thank you, Jesus, for what you have done. Thank you that the gospel truly is the good news for all who would believe.
20:55 Praise you, God. Thank you, God, for your word. It shows where else are we gonna go? What else are we gonna say? Your word is what gives the power to be saved.
21:04 The power unto salvation for all who would believe. Thank you for your word. The grass withers, the flowers, they fade away, but your word stands forever. Amen. Let's sing, let me hear your voice.
21:52 Would you repeat that with me? We'll sing that verse again. Oh, yes. Lord, the words of these these songs ring true. They truly do.
25:25 Thank you, God, for your presence with us. Thank you, God, for your provision for us in all things. God, even in our even in our suffering, we can see your provision. Even in hard times, we can see your mercies made new each day. God, we hold on to each mercy that you give.
25:45 Each little glimpse of grace that you give us, we hold on to it. Thank you, God, for taking care of us in every way, for for meeting every need as you do. And, Lord, when our faith is weak, would you strengthen us? Thank you, God, for every gift. Pray that that you would use these gifts, multiply them as only you can so that others can know this great news of this gospel message.
26:17 In Jesus' name, amen. You can be seated.
26:55 The end of sail? Do you thirst from, drink from where Jesus has come? Oh, come
30:23 a
30:23 crown. Tell the world of the treasure found Jesus is called.
30:52 Come up. They're gonna be
30:54 leaving tomorrow night. So we just before Ray gets started here, we're
30:59 gonna just. I'll go here.
31:04 If you guys will connect here.
31:12 Don't be shy guys.
31:15 We are we are privileged. The Bible tells us that, this is the testimony God has given us eternal life through the death, burial, resurrection of Jesus Christ, the blood that we were just talking about and, share that treasure with the world. So that's what our hope is and these guys are going out by their own volition and, they're going to go encourage other believers who are working at the dump there in Nkuru, which is in near Nairobi Africa Kenya. Okay? And we just wanna pray for them.
31:44 Lord Jesus, you have given us a treasure in yourself, and we have forgiveness of sins. We've been made clean. You have come to make dead people alive and we thank you for that. Lord, we just wanna pray our blessing upon these dear folks of ours and send them out with your anointing, with your joy, with your peace. Lord, with your endurance, with, just the spirit of suffering and serving.
32:10 And I thank you for their hearts. And we just we just ask that you give them multiple opportunities, Lord, to edify, to build up, to encourage, to show compassion, to show grace, show mercy. And Lord, give them words to speak and just, we we we long to hear stories when they come back of young people and old people who have accepted you and come to know Jesus, who were introduced to Jesus. And we thank you and we pray for that in Jesus name. Amen.
32:43 It's a full morning. Baptisms, missions prayers song service that already preached the sermon and it's Boy Scout Sunday Boy Scouts leaders right over here and if you're Boy Scout here, the church has been hosting the Boy Scouts for eighty six years, I think. As best I can tell, it's eighty six years the Boy Scouts have been meeting at 1st B. Wherever 1st B was, they were there. 1st B has not always been right here in this building but it was right over there.
33:15 It was on the square. It's been all over the place in that long but amen. The kids already took off, right? I didn't hear the cavalcade because I was talking. Alright.
33:25 So we're up to in our study, is everybody am I on? Can you all hear me? Okay. In our study, we're up to second Timothy three and I'm gonna do one through 16. It's the whole chapter.
33:39 I wanna do that because it's two paragraphs this time. Usually I do one paragraph at a time context wise. That's about as much as y'all can take. If I just did one paragraph this week, it would leave you in a hole. And I don't wanna leave you in a hole and then go for two weeks.
33:53 Okay? So I'm gonna dig you back out of the hole hopefully before that. Two paragraphs, two list, listen fast. Realize this, he starts off but realize this, this is a new American Standard version of the Bible. It's actually if I was going to say it, he says, mark this.
34:08 Mark this literally or take note. Write this down. If you're George Strait, write this down. Take a little note. You know what I'm saying?
34:15 He's saying, realize this. Realize this, Timothy, that in the last days, difficult times will come. Okay. He's gonna describe the difficult days here. This was, think about this, this was almost two thousand years ago.
34:32 Was written. It was written about 6465, sixty six AD. And we are in 2019 now and see if this looks like difficult times have come, okay? Realize this that in the last days, difficult times will come. For men will be list number one, paragraph number one right here Lovers of self the ones that bear repeating or going into the Greek definitions I'll do but lovers of self means they love themselves.
35:03 That's it Lovers of money Now, in first Timothy, we heard from him and he said, for the love of money not for money but for the love of money is a root of all sorts of evil. It's not the love of money is the root of all evil. It is The love of money is a root of all sorts of evil. Money can certainly be used for God's kingdom. No doubt about it.
35:28 Some by longing for money have wandered away from the faith and they've pierced themselves with many griefs. So, if the men will be lovers of self and lovers of money, boastful. They are saying thing, boastful is saying things out loud that lift themselves and puff themselves up on Super Bowl Sunday. Have you all heard anything this week that sounds that way? Lovers of lovers of money, boastful, arrogant.
35:58 God resist the proud but gives grace to the humble, right? Arrogant. Revilers. This one, I just wanted y'all to see. Blasphem, blasphemoy, blasphemoy.
36:11 Sounds like, looks like blasphemy and it is. It is that which is blasphemous, reverses spiritual and moral realities. That which God has called good, someone is taking it and profaning it and making it not so. Have you heard anybody? Marriage is God's idea, right?
36:29 Have you heard anybody running down marriage as an institution lately? That is a form of reviling It's calling something that God has called good bad. It reverses reality The spiritual and moral reality Revilers. It's also just evil speaking all the time. It's reviling It says that when Jesus was crucified, there were two thieves and they were reviling him.
36:57 They were blaspheming him and jeering and mocking him, saying bad things, reversing and calling the son of God something that he wasn't. That was before one of them turned to him. At the last moment and said, remember me and Christ saved him. At any point, this can turn. Realize this that in the last days, difficult times will come.
37:22 For men will be lovers of self, lovers of money, boastful, arrogant, revilers, disobedient to parents. Wow. That's something that God has set up. The family is something that God has set up. A structure that he has set up and disobedient to parents is one that makes the list.
37:40 I know that some of us are looking for things that we're really, really, really against. And we go, it's it's not in this list. It's in a lot of other list but it's not in this list but disobedient to parents is. Honor your parents. First commandment with a promise, right?
37:57 But your days may be long. Arrogant, revilers, disobedient to parents, ungrateful. That means ungrateful, not thankful for that which you have. Unholy, not set apart, not consecrated, not living differently. Unloving Does this sound like today to y'all?
38:24 Irreconcilable When do you hear the word irreconcil Divorce. That's the only time I can think of you ever hear that. Irreconcil differences That's what drives people apart Irreconcilable. It's about a hardness of heart that is so hard that it will not be softened. Malicious gossips.
38:53 Not just gossips but malicious gossips. It's saying something about someone else behind their back but doing so with bad intent. Without self control brutal brutal haters of the good You thought hater was just a new term, didn't you Haters. They're haters Haters of that which is good Treacherous living in a way that puts them right up to the edge. Reckless conceited boastful arrogant, conceited seem to all go together, don't?
39:42 Actually, all these go together Lovers of pleasure rather than lovers of God. Y'all know why I didn't leave you in the first paragraph now? This is where we live. This is where the world is. This is what it is.
39:58 So, he goes on to say, they hold to a form of godliness. How many people do you hear that say, I'm a spiritual person I'm a spiritual person. They hold to a form of godliness Although they have denied its power They've denied God's power. It's inner peace That's what I go after for myself no matter how much it annoys everyone else. They've denied the power of God.
40:30 So, the list number one, this is a long list. This is it. Lovers of self, lovers, money, boastful, arrogant, revilers, disobedient to parents, ungrateful, unholy, unloving, irreconcilable, malicious gossips, without self control, brutal, haters of good, treacherous, reckless, conceited, lovers of pleasure rather than lovers of God and they are denying God's power. He said, mark this, write it down to Timothy. This is what it's going to look like and it was already happening in that day and I know that every generation if I read you something from the Greeks way back in the same time and they're talking about the next generation, they'd be talking about how they've fallen off the wagon and they're absolutely immoral but this is the list and do you see it?
41:15 So, this is the milieu. This is where we live and we are called to live differently than this and that's what it gets to in the next paragraph. He says, avoid such men as these. Now, we know that Christ was a friend of sinners and he hung out with people that were apart from God. He hung out with sinners.
41:36 Since he's writing as a apostle or to a pastor, he's saying that it's not just outside. It's not just the world. There will be people within the church that will act like list number one. Does that make sense? He's saying avoid that Avoid it at all cost.
41:55 Pastor them out of this. Pastor them by living differently and he'll say that in the next paragraph. We're going to get to that, okay? You're a pastor, Timothy. Help people to see that going along with the world being just like they are is enmity with God.
42:14 You're setting yourself up against and you put yourself in a position of pride when you do that and God resist the proud but he gives grace to the humble. Avoid such men as these. He's already named a couple of em in this book that have walked away from the truth and they've started spreading heresy. He then goes on to something that's a little unusual for among them, among these people are those who enter in the households and captivate weak women, weighed down with sins, and led on by various impulses. Now, who is the them right here?
42:46 I'll get back to the women part here in a minute. Among them, to such men as these, these are the people that are living in list number one. And some of them holding to a form of godliness and sneaking up on people unawares. When he says, they enter into households and they captivate weak women. It's not saying that all women are weak.
43:08 Please don't read it that way. It's saying they take advantage of the people who are weak. Does that make sense? They captivate weak folks that really can't defend themselves and their predators towards those people. Weighed down with sins led on by various impulses.
43:29 List number one comes up there. Always learning and never able to come to a knowledge of the truth. He's saying these people get better and better and better at doing what it is that they do. But they don't ever come to the truth because you can't seek after those things and come up with truth. Does that make sense?
43:51 If you go for it, absolutely go for it and lift yourself up above all else. You are not going to come to the truth by doing that. If you list money as the number one thing and you go after that, you will not arrive at truth from that. You set yourself up against God if you are boastful and arrogant and conceded You will not arrive at the truth. If you're disobedient to parents and then somebody will always throw out there, what if my parents are terrible people?
44:20 Honor them anyway Go back to the last paragraph that says, gently correct them in the hopes that God may turn them Pray for them. Honor them still though with your life. Do what you can Lovers of pleasure rather than lovers of God denying God's power. Don't deny God's power. Here, let's go ahead on forward.
44:42 Always learning and never able to come to the knowledge of the truth because the end of the road of any of those roads is rock bottom. Now, God can pull you up from rock bottom. He can pull you up at any time that you reach out for him and anytime you call for him. He can do that. But it's going to be by going against this list and not going with this list.
45:01 Does that make sense? Alright. So, list number one is there. All and never even able to come to the knowledge of the truth. And then, he does this, just as Janus and Jambres opposed Moses.
45:15 Who are Janus and Jambres? If you're looking in the Bible, you're not going to find them anywhere else. If you look in the rabbinic literature of the time, you'll find them. If you look in stories since then, you'll find them. Just as Janus and Jambres opposed Moses, so these men also oppose the truth.
45:31 So, these two guys are somebody who opposed Moses. Have you all seen the 10 Commandments? Did you see the video that was in there? In the thing? Let's just go with pictures instead.
45:43 How about this? This is Charlton Heston playing Moses in the 10 Commandments and this guy next to him is Aaron right there and Moses is saying, let my people go to Pharaoh alright? And he's doing it with overacted Charlton Heston fashion right here towards Yule Brenner and he's got this staff and then he hands off the staff to Aaron and then Aaron throws the staff down on the ground at Pharaoh's feet. Y'all don't have to play the clip. Oh, no.
46:16 He throws the staff down and you remember in this miraculous 1939 CGI, that staff turns into a cobra. And the pharaoh says, cheap magician's tricks. And then he calls Janus. He says, Janus. He doesn't say Janus but by tradition, these two guys are the magicians from Egypt that set themselves up against God and they throw their staffs down and they turn into snakes also And then Aaron's snake eats those other snakes up.
46:55 It's featured in art a lot of times. But Janus and Jambres are the chief magicians. They are the best that Egypt had to offer. And they're listed all over the place as being the ones who are opposed. Some people actually list them.
47:09 There are couple of guys in Revelation that they say this is pointing towards. People who set themselves up against Christ. Set themselves up against God and what Paul says to Timothy is just as or in the same way that Janus and Jambres opposed Moses and thinking that they had it and they could do it just like he did it. In the same way they oppose the truth, these men oppose the truth. Men of depraved mind and rejected in regard to the faith.
47:38 They're trusting himself only and their ingenuity and their tricks. It's an Old Testament example. Exodus seven eleven and Exodus eight seven if you want to read it. I'm not going to read it today. But they will not make further progress.
47:53 Now, Janice and Jambriss were able to turn that stick into a cobra, make it look like that, had an illusion of some sort that made that work And they were able to turn water into red that looked like blood like the Nile had done. And they were able to do a few things. But when at a certain point, they could do no more. Does that make sense? Like they couldn't keep on replicating the plagues.
48:17 God's power was much greater than any power that they had even if their power was obtained demonically, okay? They will not make further progress for their folly will be obvious to all and Janice and Jabbers might have looked like the guys on the day where they turn those staffs into snakes but when it came a long time and the plague were getting worse and worse and Janice and Jambers were scratching their heads and couldn't do anything with it They look like fools. He's saying that these people that go after these things will show themselves for who they are eventually. Just as Janice and Jambers folly was also. It was evident to all that they were just cheap magicians.
48:58 So, that's first paragraph. Second paragraph, here we go. Now, you. Oh, you worry about yourself. Now, you.
49:05 He's talking about lots of other people in that first paragraph but he said, now, Timothy, you, you, you, you followed my and here's list number two, you followed my teaching. Oh, yeah. What's Paul's teaching based on? The word of God. You followed my conduct.
49:21 What was Paul's life based on? What he learned in the word of God and what was revealed to him through the Holy Spirit and directly by Christ. You followed my teaching, you followed my conduct, you're with me a long time, Timothy. You followed my purpose. You knew that the gospel of grace was my purpose.
49:40 You know it. You followed my faith. You followed the actual faith that is in Christ. Not some legalistic version of that and not some wild party called spirituality. You followed my patience.
49:59 You saw how it was that we dealt patiently with people hoping that God would give em the grace to turn, that they would accept the merciful offer to turn. You followed my agape love, godly, unconditional love. You followed my perseverance. I know you're having a hard time right here, Timothy, but you followed and you know how it is. Sometimes, we have hard times in this world especially if we are seeking to serve Christ.
50:23 So, you followed that. So, that's oh We've taken a turn. Persecutions, you followed me and you know the persecutions and the sufferings. How many sermons in a row have we mentioned suffering? A lot of em.
50:38 It's like seven and a half months. I don't think we've missed a Sunday yet. You followed me through all of these and that's all part of it. List number two is this. Now, you followed my teaching, my conduct, my purpose, my faith, my patience, my love, perseverance, persecutions, and sufferings How's that stack up against that other list?
50:58 It looks a lot better, right? Now, persecutions and sufferings doesn't look so great but if you are seeking to live a holy life, you will come up against people who are saying, that's ridiculous Just do what you want to do. You gotta look out for number one. If you put God number one, you are looking out for number one, right? List number two Persecutions and sufferings such as those that happened to me at Antioch and Iconium and Lystra.
51:26 Now, this is Timothy home land right there. Lystra, Derby, Iconium, Antioch. These are all places that Timothy knows and knows well and he saw firsthand because he was there. He picked up on the journey in Paul's second missionary journey but on the first missionary journey when Paul was going through these, it's in Acts 14 if you want to read it one through 26. You'll see that he heals a lame man in Lystra and through God's power, he saw that God's power was there and the man had faith to be healed and so he was given the credit for the healing and immediately worshiped as a god and they started sacrifice bulls to Paul That bothered him worse than almost anything else that happened in his whole missionary career and so he tore his clothes and said, no, this is not the way and he goes on down the line and when he goes down to the next town some people came along and said, this is what happened in the last town and they didn't want any part of it.
52:22 So, they took him outside the city wall and they stoned it. So, he says, this is first missionary journey map here. This is Antioch and Syria and then the northern most one there is Antioch, Pasidian Antioch. That's where this all was taking place. Antioch, Iconium, Lystra.
52:40 He says, such as what happened at Antioch, Iconium, and Lystra, a little inside information we don't know all about. We know some about Hermat. What persecutions I endured but out of them, the Lord rescued me from all of them. Out of them, all, the Lord rescued me. Indeed, he says, indeed, that's an amplifier for whatever he's gonna say next.
53:04 Indeed, all those who desire to live godly in Christ Jesus will be What do you think is gonna be next? Lifted up, exalted, made rich and famous, given a personal jet? No. Persecuted. Indeed, all who desire to live godly in Christ Jesus will be persecuted.
53:32 But evil men and impostors, so evil men being just bad guys, they're bad guys. They don't claim to be anything else but impostors are those who are claiming to be sage wisdom from God evil men and impostors will proceed from bad to worse both deceiving and being deceived. Some of em are actually being deceived and that's why they spread such nonsense and heresy because they actually believe it but there are others who don't believe it and they're able to just do a trick like Janice and Jambres. You know, they're able to do a trick. They may have believe it too for all I know.
54:09 Seiving and being deceived. Verse 13, you, oh my goodness, you worry about yourself. You, Timothy, your pastor, you're supposed to be pastoring these people and helping them through in the best way for you to do that is live out what you know. You, however, you, continuing the things that you have learned. Oh, you follow my teaching.
54:31 You follow my conduct. You, however, you continue in things you have learned. Those things. Knowing from whom you have learned them. He know, he's not, I think he's talking about himself but also himself as representative of Christ, as a minister of Christ Jesus, as a slave of Christ or a servant of God, a bond servant.
54:53 No one from whom you have learned and our Psalm this morning. I know whom I have believed. I know I've believed God and he is trustworthy and in addition to that, that from childhood, before I even knew you, from childhood, you've known the sacred writings. You know why we do Awana? So that from childhood, people can know these sacred writings.
55:15 And that from childhood, you've known the sacred writings which are able. There's the ability there. There's a power there to give you the wisdom that leads to salvation through faith which is in Christ Jesus. It must be through Christ Jesus. You can't just read this book and when you finish it, sign off on the last page and you're in.
55:33 There's the truth in there to bring you to a place of knowing who Christ is and it's sufficient for you to be able to place your faith in him. And then we have the last closing one. Closing little two verses right here and the whole of ministry I think has to be built on this foundation. It has to be Jesus Christ as revealed in God's word. All scripture, God's word.
56:04 All scripture is inspired by God and it is profitable for teaching, for reproof, for correction, and for training in righteousness. That's why we have it. That's why God gave it to us. I will break that down at a later date but we're going to close off and just say that scripture is what our ministry must be based in. When we go to Africa, they're asking us to to train pastors and to come alongside and train teachers and so Tanya and Pascal and several other folks will be working in the school and they've asked Carl and me if we will be working with ministers in the area.
56:40 There's a church that has planted a whole bunch of other small churches right now but they have a lot of people and they're young and I'm not young anymore comparatively speaking. In this room, maybe I am. No, I'm just kidding. In the second service, will be anyway. So, over there, there are lot of 20 pastors that are just starting out and they're starting out with congregations and I think it's a time for a Paul and Timothy moment and a Peter and fellow elders moment and so would y'all be praying that we'd be able to do whatever it is I'm hesitant on the front side of a mission trip to say what we're going to do cause I know how flexibility needs to be maintained there.
57:25 All scripture is inspired by God and it's profitable for teaching and for reproof and for correction, for training in righteousness so that the man of God may be what? Persecuted? No. He's not persecuted this time. Adequate.
57:43 What does that word do for you? Just good enough. Amen. It is good enough for the now. And so whether you are a pastor and you are pastoring someone or you are a fresh new believer, you have a testimony and God prepares you and equips you through his word to be good enough for the now.
58:05 Does that make sense? It's actually Artiosis based on the word which means now and viewed in terms from right now and so it's like saying in Spanish we say, someone when they say they're smart or they're ready. They're ready. They're ready right now for what they need. For that job, that guy's least though.
58:27 He's ready for that job right here and now. That's the those are the people to do that job for the now. So that the man of God may be adequate. It's perfect for that job, for the now, complete fitted, just the right one and ready and that that doesn't just mean me because I'm have this job but it means you, if you know Jesus, you are looking in his word, you'll be ready for the here and now. Properly, it is.
58:55 Ready now, prepared to function efficiently in the immediate present. You know what it is that you need to know to do what it is that God wants you to do. As you are doing it, he'll be revealing more. All scriptures inspired by God and profitable for teaching, for reproof, for correction, for training in righteousness so that the man of God may be adequate and equipped for every good work. Amen.
59:20 Would y'all stand? I'm going to ask the band back up here. If there's anybody here that does not know Jesus, does not, has not trusted in him, has not placed their faith in him, and you wanna talk about that? I'm here to let customer serve today. Alright?
59:37 We're leaving tomorrow. Come on. But if there's there are tons of people around you right now that are ready, they're adequate and ready and equipped for every good work. So ask them. Ask em how they came in.
59:49 It's gotta be by the grace of God and it's gotta be through faith placed in Jesus Christ. In Jesus name,
1:00:09 This is how firmer foundation.
1:00:14 How firm a foundation you say so the Lord has laid for your faith is excellent Lord. What more can it say than to you, he said, to you who who reached in Jesus' land. And fear not. Fear not. He is with us, so be not dismayed for he is our God or our sustainer instead.
1:00:48 He'll be our defender and cause us
1:03:11 Amen. Amen. New Living Translation of Luke 12. Seek the kingdom of God above all else and he'll give you everything that you need. In Jesus name, lord, we pray that right there, that we'd be seeking after you and that you'd be given everything we need.
1:03:28 We know that that is a not just a principle but a promise, lord. In Jesus name, amen.
