In one paragraph

This message was the closing sermon in the series through 1 Peter, with Pastor reading through the letter nearly in full so the congregation could hear its major themes together, in context, all at once. He identified four threads that run through the whole book: a high view of Christ, unjust Christian suffering with resulting exaltation, obedience to the gospel, and humility. The aim was to let...

Read together

  1. 1 Peter 5:12 opening of the closing passage, introducing Silvanus as the one through whom the letter was written
  2. Acts 16:31 referenced in connection with Silas and the iconography of broken chains from the Philippian jail earthquake
  3. 1 Peter 1:1 Peter described as one sent out by Christ, writing to those residing as aliens
  4. 1 Peter 1:7 the proven genuineness of faith more precious than gold tested by fire
  5. 1 Peter 1:8-9 not having seen Christ yet loving and believing, rejoicing with inexpressible joy, receiving salvation of souls
  6. 1 Peter 1:10-12 prophets who searched out and prophesied concerning the grace, the sufferings of Christ and glories to follow, things angels long to look into
  7. 1 Peter 1:13 girding up the mind, being sober, fixing hope completely on grace
  8. 1 Peter 1:17 conducting yourselves in fear during your time of sojourn on earth
  9. 1 Peter 1:18-19 not redeemed with perishable things like silver or gold but by the precious blood of Christ, a lamb unblemished and spotless
  10. 1 Peter 2:1-5 putting aside malice and deceit, craving pure milk of the word, coming to Christ as living stones being built up
  11. 1 Peter 2:7-9 the stone rejected by builders becoming the cornerstone, Christians called a chosen race, royal priesthood, holy nation, people for God's own possession
  12. 1 Peter 4:3 sufficient time already spent carrying out desires of the Gentiles in sensuality, lust, drunkenness, carousing, and idolatry
  13. 1 Peter 5:5-6 God resists the proud but gives grace to the humble, humble yourselves under the mighty hand of God and He will exalt you

Talk about it

  1. The pastor named four major themes running through all of 1 Peter: a high view of Christ, unjust Christian suffering with resulting exaltation, obedience to the gospel, and humility. Which of those four has felt most real or most challenging in your own life this year, and why?
  2. Peter writes through Silas, a man who was singing hymns to God while sitting in chains in a Philippian jail. What does that kind of faith under pressure look like in a practical situation you have actually faced or watched someone else face?
  3. The sermon made the point that context is king when reading scripture, and that we are less likely to misunderstand it when we take it in all at once. How does the way you normally read or hear the Bible compare to that, and what difference might it make to read a whole letter in one sitting?
  4. Peter calls his readers a chosen race, a royal priesthood, a holy nation, a people for God's own possession, yet he also says they once were not a people. What does it mean to you personally to be part of a group whose only real common ground is leaning into Jesus?
  5. The sermon closed with the idea that as the outcome of your faith, other people's souls will be saved, not just your own. Where do you see that happening, or where do you think it could happen, in the relationships around you right now?
