The passage this message was preached from, in full, with every other passage it reached for.

  • John 17 Jesus praying for unity among believers, that all of them may be one

    1 Jesus said these things, and lifting up his eyes to heaven, he said, “Father, the time has come. Glorify your Son, that your Son may also glorify you;

2 even as you gave him authority over all flesh, so he will give eternal life to all whom you have given him.

3 This is eternal life, that they should know you, the only true God, and him whom you sent, Jesus Christ.

4 I glorified you on the earth. I have accomplished the work which you have given me to do.

5 Now, Father, glorify me with your own self with the glory which I had with you before the world existed.

6 I revealed your name to the people whom you have given me out of the world. They were yours, and you have given them to me. They have kept your word.

7 Now they have known that all things whatever you have given me are from you,

8 for the words which you have given me I have given to them, and they received them, and knew for sure that I came from you, and they have believed that you sent me.

9 I pray for them. I don’t pray for the world, but for those whom you have given me, for they are yours.

10 All things that are mine are yours, and yours are mine, and I am glorified in them.

11 I am no more in the world, but these are in the world, and I am coming to you. Holy Father, keep them through your name which you have given me, that they may be one, even as we are.

12 While I was with them in the world, I kept them in your name. Those whom you have given me I have kept. None of them is lost, except the son of destruction, that the Scripture might be fulfilled.

13 But now I come to you, and I say these things in the world, that they may have my joy made full in themselves.

14 I have given them your word. The world hated them, because they are not of the world, even as I am not of the world.

15 I pray not that you would take them from the world, but that you would keep them from the evil one.

16 They are not of the world even as I am not of the world.

17 Sanctify them in your truth. Your word is truth.

18 As you sent me into the world, even so I have sent them into the world.

19 For their sakes I sanctify myself, that they themselves also may be sanctified in truth.

20 Not for these only do I pray, but for those also who will believe in me through their word,

21 that they may all be one; even as you, Father, are in me, and I in you, that they also may be one in us; that the world may believe that you sent me.

    22 The glory which you have given me, I have given to them; that they may be one, even as we are one;

23 I in them, and you in me, that they may be perfected into one; that the world may know that you sent me, and loved them, even as you loved me.

24 Father, I desire that they also whom you have given me be with me where I am, that they may see my glory, which you have given me, for you loved me before the foundation of the world.

25 Righteous Father, the world hasn’t known you, but I knew you; and these knew that you sent me.

26 I made known to them your name, and will make it known; that the love with which you loved me may be in them, and I in them.”

different gifts given to each believer for the body of Christ

6 Having gifts differing according to the grace that was given to us, if prophecy, let us prophesy according to the proportion of our faith;

7 or service, let us give ourselves to service; or he who teaches, to his teaching;

8 or he who exhorts, to his exhorting: he who gives, let him do it with generosity; he who rules, with diligence; he who shows mercy, with cheerfulness.

Acts 11

Barnabas encouraging the church at Antioch to remain true to the Lord

1 Now the apostles and the brothers who were in Judea heard that the Gentiles had also received the word of God.

2 When Peter had come up to Jerusalem, those who were of the circumcision contended with him,

3 saying, “You went in to uncircumcised men, and ate with them!”

4 But Peter began, and explained to them in order, saying,

5 “I was in the city of Joppa praying, and in a trance I saw a vision: a certain container descending, like it was a great sheet let down from heaven by four corners. It came as far as me.

6 When I had looked intently at it, I considered, and saw the four-footed animals of the earth, wild animals, creeping things, and birds of the sky.

7 I also heard a voice saying to me, ‘Rise, Peter, kill and eat!’

8 But I said, ‘Not so, Lord, for nothing unholy or unclean has ever entered into my mouth.’

9 But a voice answered me the second time out of heaven, ‘What God has cleansed, don’t you call unclean.’

10 This was done three times, and all were drawn up again into heaven.

11 Behold, immediately three men stood before the house where I was, having been sent from Caesarea to me.

12 The Spirit told me to go with them, without discriminating. These six brothers also accompanied me, and we entered into the man’s house.

13 He told us how he had seen the angel standing in his house, and saying to him, ‘Send to Joppa, and get Simon, who is called Peter,

14 who will speak to you words by which you will be saved, you and all your house.’

15 As I began to speak, the Holy Spirit fell on them, even as on us at the beginning.

16 I remembered the word of the Lord, how he said, ‘John indeed baptized in water, but you will be baptized in the Holy Spirit.’

17 If then God gave to them the same gift as us, when we believed in the Lord Jesus Christ, who was I, that I could withstand God?”

18 When they heard these things, they held their peace, and glorified God, saying, “Then God has also granted to the Gentiles repentance to life!”

19 They therefore who were scattered abroad by the oppression that arose about Stephen traveled as far as Phoenicia, Cyprus, and Antioch, speaking the word to no one except to Jews only.

20 But there were some of them, men of Cyprus and Cyrene, who, when they had come to Antioch, spoke to the Hellenists, preaching the Lord Jesus.

21 The hand of the Lord was with them, and a great number believed and turned to the Lord.

22 The report concerning them came to the ears of the assembly which was in Jerusalem. They sent out Barnabas to go as far as Antioch,

23 who, when he had come, and had seen the grace of God, was glad. He exhorted them all, that with purpose of heart they should remain near to the Lord.

24 For he was a good man, and full of the Holy Spirit and of faith, and many people were added to the Lord.

25 Barnabas went out to Tarsus to look for Saul.

26 When he had found him, he brought him to Antioch. For a whole year they were gathered together with the assembly, and taught many people. The disciples were first called Christians in Antioch.

27 Now in these days, prophets came down from Jerusalem to Antioch.

28 One of them named Agabus stood up, and indicated by the Spirit that there should be a great famine all over the world, which also happened in the days of Claudius.

29 As any of the disciples had plenty, each determined to send relief to the brothers who lived in Judea;

30 which they also did, sending it to the elders by the hands of Barnabas and Saul.

John 10

the enemy comes to kill steal and destroy, Jesus came to give abundant life

1 “Most certainly, I tell you, one who doesn’t enter by the door into the sheep fold, but climbs up some other way, the same is a thief and a robber.

2 But one who enters in by the door is the shepherd of the sheep.

3 The gatekeeper opens the gate for him, and the sheep listen to his voice. He calls his own sheep by name, and leads them out.

4 Whenever he brings out his own sheep, he goes before them, and the sheep follow him, for they know his voice.

5 They will by no means follow a stranger, but will flee from him; for they don’t know the voice of strangers.”

6 Jesus spoke this parable to them, but they didn’t understand what he was telling them.

7 Jesus therefore said to them again, “Most certainly, I tell you, I am the sheep’s door.

8 All who came before me are thieves and robbers, but the sheep didn’t listen to them.

9 I am the door. If anyone enters in by me, he will be saved, and will go in and go out, and will find pasture.

10 The thief only comes to steal, kill, and destroy. I came that they may have life, and may have it abundantly.

11 I am the good shepherd. The good shepherd lays down his life for the sheep.

12 He who is a hired hand, and not a shepherd, who doesn’t own the sheep, sees the wolf coming, leaves the sheep, and flees. The wolf snatches the sheep, and scatters them.

13 The hired hand flees because he is a hired hand, and doesn’t care for the sheep.

14 I am the good shepherd. I know my own, and I’m known by my own;

15 even as the Father knows me, and I know the Father. I lay down my life for the sheep.

16 I have other sheep, which are not of this fold. I must bring them also, and they will hear my voice. They will become one flock with one shepherd.

17 Therefore the Father loves me, because I lay down my life, that I may take it again.

18 No one takes it away from me, but I lay it down by myself. I have power to lay it down, and I have power to take it again. I received this commandment from my Father.”

19 Therefore a division arose again among the Jews because of these words.

20 Many of them said, “He has a demon, and is insane! Why do you listen to him?”

21 Others said, “These are not the sayings of one possessed by a demon. It isn’t possible for a demon to open the eyes of the blind, is it?”

22 It was the Feast of the Dedication at Jerusalem.

23 It was winter, and Jesus was walking in the temple, in Solomon’s porch.

24 The Jews therefore came around him and said to him, “How long will you hold us in suspense? If you are the Christ, tell us plainly.”

25 Jesus answered them, “I told you, and you don’t believe. The works that I do in my Father’s name, these testify about me.

26 But you don’t believe, because you are not of my sheep, as I told you.

27 My sheep hear my voice, and I know them, and they follow me.

28 I give eternal life to them. They will never perish, and no one will snatch them out of my hand.

29 My Father, who has given them to me, is greater than all. No one is able to snatch them out of my Father’s hand.

30 I and the Father are one.”

31 Therefore Jews took up stones again to stone him.

32 Jesus answered them, “I have shown you many good works from my Father. For which of those works do you stone me?”

33 The Jews answered him, “We don’t stone you for a good work, but for blasphemy: because you, being a man, make yourself God.”

34 Jesus answered them, “Isn’t it written in your law, ‘I said, you are gods?’

35 If he called them gods, to whom the word of God came (and the Scripture can’t be broken),

36 do you say of him whom the Father sanctified and sent into the world, ‘You blaspheme,’ because I said, ‘I am the Son of God?’

37 If I don’t do the works of my Father, don’t believe me.

38 But if I do them, though you don’t believe me, believe the works; that you may know and believe that the Father is in me, and I in the Father.”

39 They sought again to seize him, and he went out of their hand.

40 He went away again beyond the Jordan into the place where John was baptizing at first, and there he stayed.

41 Many came to him. They said, “John indeed did no sign, but everything that John said about this man is true.”

42 Many believed in him there.

Ephesians 6

the armor of God to stand firm against the strategies of the enemy

1 Children, obey your parents in the Lord, for this is right.

2 “Honor your father and mother,” which is the first commandment with a promise:

3 “that it may be well with you, and you may live long on the earth.”

4 You fathers, don’t provoke your children to wrath, but nurture them in the discipline and instruction of the Lord.

5 Servants, be obedient to those who according to the flesh are your masters, with fear and trembling, in singleness of your heart, as to Christ;

6 not in the way of service only when eyes are on you, as men pleasers; but as servants of Christ, doing the will of God from the heart;

7 with good will doing service, as to the Lord, and not to men;

8 knowing that whatever good thing each one does, he will receive the same again from the Lord, whether he is bound or free.

9 You masters, do the same things to them, and give up threatening, knowing that he who is both their Master and yours is in heaven, and there is no partiality with him.

10 Finally, be strong in the Lord, and in the strength of his might.

11 Put on the whole armor of God, that you may be able to stand against the wiles of the devil.

12 For our wrestling is not against flesh and blood, but against the principalities, against the powers, against the world’s rulers of the darkness of this age, and against the spiritual forces of wickedness in the heavenly places.

13 Therefore put on the whole armor of God, that you may be able to withstand in the evil day, and, having done all, to stand.

14 Stand therefore, having the utility belt of truth buckled around your waist, and having put on the breastplate of righteousness,

15 and having fitted your feet with the preparation of the Good News of peace;

16 above all, taking up the shield of faith, with which you will be able to quench all the fiery darts of the evil one.

17 And take the helmet of salvation, and the sword of the Spirit, which is the word of God;

18 with all prayer and requests, praying at all times in the Spirit, and being watchful to this end in all perseverance and requests for all the saints:

19 on my behalf, that utterance may be given to me in opening my mouth, to make known with boldness the mystery of the Good News,

20 for which I am an ambassador in chains; that in it I may speak boldly, as I ought to speak.

21 But that you also may know my affairs, how I am doing, Tychicus, the beloved brother and faithful servant in the Lord, will make known to you all things;

22 whom I have sent to you for this very purpose, that you may know our state, and that he may comfort your hearts.

23 Peace be to the brothers, and love with faith, from God the Father and the Lord Jesus Christ.

24 Grace be with all those who love our Lord Jesus Christ with incorruptible love. Amen.

Luke 4

Jesus using the word to combat the enemy's attacks during the temptation in the desert

1 Jesus, full of the Holy Spirit, returned from the Jordan, and was led by the Spirit into the wilderness

2 for forty days, being tempted by the devil. He ate nothing in those days. Afterward, when they were completed, he was hungry.

3 The devil said to him, “If you are the Son of God, command this stone to become bread.”

4 Jesus answered him, saying, “It is written, ‘Man shall not live by bread alone, but by every word of God.’”

5 The devil, leading him up on a high mountain, showed him all the kingdoms of the world in a moment of time.

6 The devil said to him, “I will give you all this authority, and their glory, for it has been delivered to me; and I give it to whomever I want.

7 If you therefore will worship before me, it will all be yours.”

8 Jesus answered him, “Get behind me Satan! For it is written, ‘You shall worship the Lord your God, and you shall serve him only.’”

9 He led him to Jerusalem, and set him on the pinnacle of the temple, and said to him, “If you are the Son of God, cast yourself down from here,

10 for it is written, ‘He will put his angels in charge of you, to guard you;’

11 and, ‘On their hands they will bear you up, lest perhaps you dash your foot against a stone.’”

12 Jesus answering, said to him, “It has been said, ‘You shall not tempt the Lord your God.’”

13 When the devil had completed every temptation, he departed from him until another time.

14 Jesus returned in the power of the Spirit into Galilee, and news about him spread through all the surrounding area.

15 He taught in their synagogues, being glorified by all.

16 He came to Nazareth, where he had been brought up. He entered, as was his custom, into the synagogue on the Sabbath day, and stood up to read.

17 The book of the prophet Isaiah was handed to him. He opened the book, and found the place where it was written,

18 “The Spirit of the Lord is on me, because he has anointed me to preach good news to the poor. He has sent me to heal the broken hearted, to proclaim release to the captives, recovering of sight to the blind, to deliver those who are crushed,

19 and to proclaim the acceptable year of the Lord.”

20 He closed the book, gave it back to the attendant, and sat down. The eyes of all in the synagogue were fastened on him.

21 He began to tell them, “Today, this Scripture has been fulfilled in your hearing.”

22 All testified about him, and wondered at the gracious words which proceeded out of his mouth, and they said, “Isn’t this Joseph’s son?”

23 He said to them, “Doubtless you will tell me this parable, ‘Physician, heal yourself! Whatever we have heard done at Capernaum, do also here in your hometown.’”

24 He said, “Most certainly I tell you, no prophet is acceptable in his hometown.

25 But truly I tell you, there were many widows in Israel in the days of Elijah, when the sky was shut up three years and six months, when a great famine came over all the land.

26 Elijah was sent to none of them, except to Zarephath, in the land of Sidon, to a woman who was a widow.

27 There were many lepers in Israel in the time of Elisha the prophet, yet not one of them was cleansed, except Naaman, the Syrian.”

28 They were all filled with wrath in the synagogue, as they heard these things.

29 They rose up, threw him out of the city, and led him to the brow of the hill that their city was built on, that they might throw him off the cliff.

30 But he, passing through the middle of them, went his way.

31 He came down to Capernaum, a city of Galilee. He was teaching them on the Sabbath day,

32 and they were astonished at his teaching, for his word was with authority.

33 In the synagogue there was a man who had a spirit of an unclean demon, and he cried out with a loud voice,

34 saying, “Ah! what have we to do with you, Jesus of Nazareth? Have you come to destroy us? I know you who you are: the Holy One of God!”

35 Jesus rebuked him, saying, “Be silent, and come out of him!” When the demon had thrown him down in the middle of them, he came out of him, having done him no harm.

36 Amazement came on all, and they spoke together, one with another, saying, “What is this word? For with authority and power he commands the unclean spirits, and they come out!”

37 News about him went out into every place of the surrounding region.

38 He rose up from the synagogue, and entered into Simon’s house. Simon’s mother-in-law was afflicted with a great fever, and they begged him for her.

39 He stood over her, and rebuked the fever; and it left her. Immediately she rose up and served them.

40 When the sun was setting, all those who had any sick with various diseases brought them to him; and he laid his hands on every one of them, and healed them.

41 Demons also came out of many, crying out, and saying, “You are the Christ, the Son of God!” Rebuking them, he didn’t allow them to speak, because they knew that he was the Christ.

42 When it was day, he departed and went into an uninhabited place, and the multitudes looked for him, and came to him, and held on to him, so that he wouldn’t go away from them.

43 But he said to them, “I must preach the good news of God’s Kingdom to the other cities also. For this reason I have been sent.”

44 He was preaching in the synagogues of Galilee.

Recap

The message in order, in a few minutes of reading.

This message was Pastor Ray's continuation through Acts, picking up at chapter four verse 32 and running through chapter five verse 11. The passage covers three things: a description of the early church's common life, a positive example in Barnabas, and a hard negative example in Ananias and Sapphira. Pastor Ray worked through all of it, application and difficulty included.

What was said

The recap opened with a quick review of Acts so far: the Holy Spirit coming at Pentecost, the healing at the temple gate, Peter and John before the high council, and the believers gathering afterward not to pray for safety but to pray for boldness. That boldness and unity set the stage for everything that follows in chapter four.

Verse 32 describes the congregation as "one of heart and soul," and Pastor Ray spent time on that before moving on. He connected it to Jesus' prayer in John, where Jesus asks that his followers would be one just as the Father and Son are one, so that the world would believe. The point was plain: unity is not just an internal church matter, it is part of the church's witness to the world.

The early believers held their possessions loosely, selling land and property and laying the proceeds at the apostles' feet so that no one among them was in need. Pastor Ray drew a line back to Deuteronomy, where that same care for the poor was supposed to be flowing through the temple. His point was that now, with the Holy Spirit dwelling in believers, the church had become the temple, and what the old system was meant to produce was finally happening.

Barnabas gets named as the clear positive example. He sold land, brought the money, and is described elsewhere in Acts as a good man, full of the Holy Spirit and faith, who encouraged a frightened and scattering church to stay true to the Lord. Pastor Ray followed Barnabas through Acts to show how encouragement, used faithfully, shaped the early church, including his role in bringing Paul alongside him and later mentoring John Mark.

Then comes the hard part. Ananias and Sapphira sold property, kept back some of the money privately, and presented only part of it as though it were the whole amount. Peter confronts each of them separately, and both die. Pastor Ray said plainly that he does not know why the punishment was so severe, but he pointed to what Peter names as the real issue: they had not lied to men but to God, and they had colluded to test the Spirit of the Lord. The enemy was at work inside the church, and what was threatened was the integrity and unity of something God was building.

He quoted one of Ray's seminary professors: if God acts to preserve the integrity of the community the gospel produced, that gives us increased confidence in the truthfulness of the message itself. The fear that fell over the church afterward was not only terror. Pastor Ray described it as reverence and awe, a recognition of who God actually is, and he pointed ahead to what Acts shows next: that this fear drew multitudes to the Lord.

The sermon closed with three things Pastor Ray drew from the text: to encourage one another, using whatever gifts God has given; to be alert, because the enemy actively works against the unity of the church and the armor of God described in Ephesians six is meant to be worn; and to fear the Lord, not as something negative but as the beginning of wisdom, a clear-eyed recognition of every part of who God is, including his holiness, his power, and his coming judgment.

Doing a Bible study?

Here is a guide we have prepared for you: the passages in order, questions for the group, and room to write.

  1. The pastor described the early church as being 'one of heart and soul,' and connected that unity to Jesus' prayer in John that believers would be one so that the world would believe. Where have you seen genuine unity in a church community draw people toward Christ, and what do you think threatens that kind of unity most?
  2. The sermon pointed to the list from Acts 2 of what the early believers devoted themselves to, and said these are 'the basics we never want to depart from.' Which of those four things, the apostles' teaching, fellowship, sharing meals including the Lord's Supper, and prayer, do you find easiest to stay committed to, and which is hardest for you personally?

Spirit lit the flame. Now, this gospel truth of old, it shall not kneel and it shall not faint. By his blood and in his name and his spirit, I am free. For the love of Jesus Christ that's resurrected me. Isn't that good?
Ray's brought us up to chapter four. Here, let me see if I can get this clicker working. There it is. Enjoy this picture of him as I share some review. That's one of my favorites of him.
He can share the story with you later. So Luke picks up where the gospels leave off. Jesus has risen from death. Just consider that for a minute. That is huge.
Jesus is risen from death. He's appears to his disciples several times. He tells them, hey, stay in Jerusalem. Well, the promised Holy Spirit comes and sure enough, what happens? The Holy Spirit comes at Pentecost filling the believers and those from surrounding regions.
They didn't speak the language. They were confused because they understood. People from regions everywhere. How is it that we're hearing the wonders of God in our own languages? And Peter says, hey, listen, church, this is the Holy Spirit.
These guys aren't drunk as some of you may assume. It's only nine in the morning. God made this Jesus whom you crucified to be both Lord and Messiah. He says, repent. Turn to God.
Be baptized in the name of Christ. You too will receive this Holy Spirit. And this is the wonderful part. Moved by the Holy Spirit and the message, thousands come to believe that day. And they devoted themselves, I want you to hear this because it's gonna come up again and again today.
They devoted themselves to the apostles' teaching, to fellowship, what we're doing right here, to sharing meals, including the Lord's Supper and prayer. Those are the basics we never want to depart from. And so the church continues to grow in Jesus' name. Peter and John heal man that could not walk since birth. They heal this man.
The high council, they're walking past this person every week. They know what's happened. It's an undeniable fact that this man is healed and the high council, Peter and John stand before him, the high council goes, hey, knock that off, you guys. Would you stop this? And Peter and John say, nope, we can't.
We cannot stop talking about everything that we've seen and heard. So they get thrown in jail and then released for fear of a riot. And we left off last week where the believers gathered together full of the Holy Spirit, and they prayed for safety in preaching the word. Does that sound right? What did they pray for?
For boldness. They prayed for courage in sharing the word. So that brings us to chapter four verse 32. I'd like to read up to chapter five verse 11. This is the church's common life.
We'll get to see a description of the church. What is it that these believers did when they met together? We'll see a positive example, that being Barnabas, and then a negative example being Ananias and Sapphira. Of course, some application throughout. Are you ready?
We're going to have so much fun. So beginning with verse 32, it says this. Oh, it's not up there. Verse 32 says this, and the congregation of those who believed were one of heart and soul. So I don't want to skip over this part because at the foundation of this healthy and growing and vibrant church, there was unity among believers.
There was a common heart and there was a common purpose with Christ at the center. And this is the unity that Jesus prayed for in John. Do you remember this? Jesus says, my prayer is not just for them alone. I pray for those who will believe through their message, through the disciples message that all of them may be what?
One. Father, just as you are in me and I am in you, may they be in us, the unity of the Godhead and the church, so that the world may believe that you have sent me. Just so consider this for a second. Our unity together, our unity together shows the world that we belong to Christ. So disunity, not a great example.
Unity, a good example. And it's happening right here, one of heart and soul. And it says this, not one of them claimed that anything belonging to him was his own, but all things were common property to him. Can I take you back twenty years? Twenty years.
So this was me as a youth pastor before I moved here to Jackson. The guy in the back middle row, no beard. By the way, Brad, you were right. A beard is really makeup for men, and thank you Brad for that. I'm wearing my makeup today.
And you know what's neat too? This so cool. Of that group in there, I got to officiate a wedding for one of those ladies in there. Over the summer, another one of those ladies came to Jackson for a visit with her family. She's married now.
She's got two kids. And it was just so sweet to see twenty years later these kids in this youth group that are, they're not kids anymore, they're adults. And and just how well they're doing and walking with the Lord and I'm just thankful. Anyway, this youth group and I, we took a a road trip to the inner city of Chicago. Oh, I'm hoping this will show up.
To a place called Jesus People USA. Has anyone ever heard of Jesus People USA in Chicago? You have. Okay. One.
I'll I'll explain. It it has been around for over forty years. It's now a group of about 200 people living communally in a 10 story building in Chicago's Uptown neighborhood. And listen to this, they don't get paid directly for their work. Instead, the money that they earn goes into a common purse where, and here's the quote from the website, that it frees up individuals to give themselves wholly to the work of ministry and to family and life.
Now, I am not I am not suggesting that you move to Chicago and pull your resources. My wife is like, sounds a lot like socialism. I'm not suggesting that you do this and move there and all that. But I will say, I will say that this was fun to witness. It was fun to see these believers, and what was fun to see is that they were holding loosely to what they owned.
And with a common heart and a common purpose with Christ at the center and Jesus teaching at the center, they were feeding and clothing the poor, and they were buying up buildings, and they were turning them into women and children's shelters and on and on. They do a great work. So like the early church, all things were common properties. Just thought I'd throw that illustration in there. So verse 33, with great power, the apostles were giving testimony to the resurrection of the Lord Jesus.
It's like this. It's like Peter and John saying, listen, we cannot stop talking about what we have seen and what we have heard. They were filled with his spirit. They're doing miracles in Jesus name, and God was using their witness to draw people to himself. There was momentum and the church was growing.
And it says this, this is one of my favorite parts, that abundant grace was upon them all. You know that I love grace. You know that I talk about grace a lot. God's unmerited favor that he just gives to us. There was plenty of that to go around, and church, there still is.
God's abundant grace is available to us. I love that. Verse 34, for there was not a needy person among them, for all who were owners of land or houses would sell them, and they'd bring the proceeds of the sales, and they would lay them at the apostles' feet, and they would be distributed to each to the extent that they had need. Now some say it was a special era in the church that some knew that because of Roman occupation that that their land was going be taken anyway. And so they some say that they just gave of their land.
They they they sold it and used the money. Whatever the reasons, it's not only generous, but k. Luke is our author here of Acts and also the Gospel of Luke. To Luke's Jewish audience, for him to include believers taking care of the poor would have signaled back to the Torah in Deuteronomy where this practice was supposed to be happening through the temple and through its leaders. Look at this from from Deuteronomy.
It says, there should be no poor among you, for the Lord your God will greatly bless you in the land that he's giving you. Goes on to say, give generously, not grudgingly, for the Lord your God will bless you in everything you do. This was supposed to be happening in the temple. This was God's intent. But here's what I love.
Now the Holy Spirit has come. Now the Holy Spirit has come, and there's a new temple where God resides where? Right here. Right here. It's not about a building.
God resides right here. We, church, are his temple. The believers in Christ, the local church, fulfilling the purpose for which God always intend intended to fill the temple, us, with his spirit and with love and with unity and with generosity, testifying about the risen Christ. And look at this, I I love this part. This comes after Luke chapter two verse 42 that as the disciples were devoting themselves to the apostles' teaching and the fellowship and sharing meals, including the Lord's Supper and to prayer, they were filled with his spirit and with love and with unity and with generosity testifying about the risen Jesus.
And what's better is that these friends, these these things right here, church, these are still as winsome and attractive as they ever were. These will always work. And first b, I want to encourage us. I do because and I want to fan the flame because I see these things in our body. And of course, we're not perfect.
We make mistakes. But to the best of our ability, as God leads, we are pursuing this right here. So may I pray just for a moment on that? In fact, I wanna do this. First, I'm gonna shut the blinds for these poor folks here.
Watch this. Batteries are dead. We just changed them yesterday. Or not. Sorry if some of you like sunlight.
I'm just watching these poor folks squint over here or practically crying. May I may I pray here for a moment? Lord God, would you help us to to continue oh gracious, to be to continue to be this kind of a church, a church that is full of your spirit and love and unity and generosity and batteries that work in the blinds, and God, to be a channel of blessing, to be a channel of blessing to this community and to the ends of the the earth as we devote ourselves to the scripture and fellowship, sharing meals and prayer. In Jesus name, Lord, thank you for your church. Alright.
Here we go. Moving on. Verse 36. Now Joseph, a Levite of Cyprian birth. So this is a Jewish believer from the island of Cyprus who is also called Barnabas by the apostles, which translated mean means son of encouragement.
He owned attractive land and he sold it and he brought the money and he laid it at the apostles feet. Barnabas. I love this guy, the encourager. Now, I don't know who these ladies are. This is just a Google image.
But I like their bus. It's the Barnabas bus. It's the Barna bus. Barna bus. Moving on.
Look what it says about that's a dad joke. Look what it says about Barnabas in chapter 11. And this in chat when we get to chapter 11, this was a very difficult time in the life of the church. Stephen had just been martyred. The church is scattering from Jerusalem.
You can imagine the anxiety and the fear that the church must have felt. And Barnabas goes to Antioch and it says this, that he encouraged them to remain true to the Lord with all of their hearts. He was a good man. He was full of the Holy Spirit and faith, and a great number of people were brought to the Lord. Doesn't sound like the kind of guy that you want to know?
The kind of guy that encouraged the believers. And Barnabas went to Tarsus. He went to look for Saul. And when he found him, he brought him to Antioch. And so for a whole year, Barnabas and Paul became best buds, and they met with the church, and they taught great numbers of people.
Isn't that awesome? That this is the guy that was discouraging excuse me, encouraging the discouraged saying, friends, church, stay true to the Lord. Keep running this race. It's gonna be okay. Keep on keeping on.
So full of the Holy Spirit and faith, he taught with Paul. Later, he would mentor John Mark, and he would be a conciliator between John Mark and Paul. You remember the split? Barnabas was the one who brought them back together. I love that part.
But all to say, he used his gift of encouragement well. And may I encourage us from Romans 12 verses six through nine. Here's some application here throughout. We have different gifts according to the grace given to us. Every one of us in here has different gifts to be used for the body of Christ.
If your gift is prophesying, foretelling or forthtelling, prophesy in accordance with your faith. If your gift is serving, serve. If it's teaching, teach. If it is to encourage, give encouragement. If it's giving, give generously.
If it is to lead, do it diligently. If it is to show mercy, do it cheerfully. And I can see the faces around this room as I read these gifts and I'm looking at you going, there's that gift, there's that gift, there's that gift, there's that gift, and I love it. Love must be sincere, hate what is evil, and cling to what is good. So this is a great segue into chapter five.
We've looked at a description of the church's common life from Acts. We've looked at a positive a positive example, that being Barnabas. And then we get to Ananias and Sapphira. No doubt, this is a very difficult teaching. I've been wrestling with this for weeks.
Now you get to. And and and Lord help us to take in the whole counsel of scripture, the good examples and the bads. So here it is starting at five verse one. I'm just gonna read to 11 and you can follow along with me here. But a man named Ananias, with his wife Sapphira, they sold a piece of property.
And they kept back some of the proceeds for himself with his wife's full knowledge. And bringing a portion of it, he laid it at the apostles' feet. But Peter said, Ananias, why has Satan filled your heart to lie to the Holy Spirit and to keep back some of the proceeds of the lamb? While it remained unsold, did it not remain your own? Was this not yours to do what you wanted to with it?
And after it was sold, was it not under your control? Why is it that you've concede this deed in your heart? You've not lied to men, but to God. And as he heard these words, Ananias collapsed and he died, and great fear came over all who heard about it. Verse six, and the young man got up and covered him.
I've been thinking Ray kept saying to me, and the youth group came and they took him away. And I just I just had a funny image of mine, Carl and his youth group carrying this person away. It's not funny actually at all. Sorry. But why the youth group?
I don't I don't I don't know. The young man came up and they covered him and after carrying him out, they buried him. Now an interval of about three hours elapsed and his wife came in not knowing what had happened. Poor thing. And Peter responded to her, tell me whether you sold the land for this price.
And she said, yes, for that price. And then Peter said to her, why is it that you've agreed together, collusion, to put the spirit of the Lord to the test? Behold, the feet of those who've buried your husband are at the door, and they will carry you out as well. And immediately she collapsed at his feet and died. And the young man came in, and they found her dead, and they carried her out and buried her beside her husband.
Verse 11, and great fear came over the whole church and over all who heard about these things. Again, this is a very, very difficult teaching. Ray did give me the option of not of not preaching. He said, you you could stop at at Barnabas. And I thought, I'm a big boy.
I can handle it. I'll do it, Ray. But it does raise a lot of questions, doesn't it? You know, why why did Ananias and Sapphira lie? You know, what was their motivation for not telling the truth?
Was it recognition? They saw Barnabas and they thought, oh, I want to be like Barnabas, but we'll keep back some of this, you know. And then of course, the question is, you know, why such a severe punishment? And the truth is, I don't know. I really, I don't know.
But I do know this, that the enemy was at work in the church and in the hearts of Ananias and Sapphira. And Peter exposes it. He says, why has Satan filled your heart to lie to the Holy Spirit? He'd not lied to men, but to God. This is an offense against the Lord.
And why have you agreed to put the spirit of the Lord to the test? And and really the bottom line here is that these are the things that threaten the integrity and the unity and the purity of the church. This new era that God was ushering in, the holy led by the Holy Spirit, and the believers are all united together, and this was bringing disunity. And as one of Ray's seminary professors points out, if God acts to preserve the integrity and commune of the community that the Gospel produced, we can have an increased confidence in the truthfulness of the mess itself. Let me read that again.
If God acts to preserve the integrity of the community that the gospel produced, we can have an increased confidence and the truthfulness of the message itself. That's good news for the inquirer, but bad news for anyone who would take a casual approach to entering the kingdom of God. So that's been sitting in my lap for a while. Now I get to set it in yours. You're welcome.
And then verse 11 ends with, great fear came over the whole church. And this can actually mean real fear like terror, but it can mean reverence and awe and respect, a recognition of God's power and holiness. So in the negative sense, fear of judgment or danger, but in the positive sense, a reverence for God. But as we go on in Acts, we're gonna see as a result of that fear, look at this, when we approach this next week, that the fear of God, it produced this in the church. Multitudes of men and women were constantly added to their number.
So there was this good, healthy fear that was drawing people to the Lord and to the church. And so as a matter of application, I'm wrapping up here. Here are just a few points that I'm drawing from the text today. Okay? And they are to encourage one another to be alert and to fear the Lord.
Encourage one another, be alert and fear the Lord. Now, I understand that not everyone is a Barnabas. Right? But we can still do this. We can still do this.
We can still encourage one another and build each other up. Whether that is a word of encouragement, or an act of service, or generosity or compassion or whatever it is that God has gifted you with, we can use it to build up the body of Christ, to encourage one another and build each other up. So there's one application point. I also believe that there is a warning here that we can draw from the text, that to be alert. Do you remember Jesus in John 10?
And he says, the enemy comes to kill and steal and destroy. Do you remember that part? Do you remember what Jesus said he does? I've come that they might have full and abundant life. The enemy, however, comes to kill and steal and destroy.
Whatever unity God has placed in us and with one another, the enemy seeks to destroy that. First Peter says, he prowls around like a roaring lion looking for someone to desire. This is awful. This is discord. This is this is disunity.
This is the wolf coming into the the the fold of sheep. The enemy did not want unity in the church then. The enemy does not want unity in the church now. And you can guarantee he is hard at work to to bring unit disunity and and and discord. The good news is here though, and I wanna say this, because it's not just about being alert, is we have the armor here of God.
You remember this in Ephesians six? We have armor to stand firm against the strategies of the enemy. And Ephesians six tells us, church, put it on. Put it on. Just even this morning as I was waking up.
And you know how you you have this kind of the the mind is a battleground, and you start to have a a thought, and you start to go down, you know, maybe kind of some stinking thinking and that kind of a stuff, that kind of stuff. And and it's like, we we do, we need to battle against this. And we have armor here, it says, from Ephesians six. We've got God's truth and his righteousness. We've got the gospel.
We've got faith. We've got the hope of our salvation. We've got the word of God. Now think of Jesus being tempted in the desert in Luke chapter four, and what does he use to combat the enemy's attacks? Use the word.
We have prayer, but all to say, we are not defenseless against the enemy. And the warning here is to be alert. And then last is to fear the Lord. I think we tend to see the fear of the Lord as something that is negative. Proverbs tells us this though, the fear of the Lord, that's the beginning of wisdom.
The fear of the Lord is the beginning of wisdom, and the knowledge of the holy one, that's understanding. These are good things. To fear the Lord is a good thing. And when we view God with reverence and awe and respect, recognizing him for who he truly is, every part of God, Not just his grace and not just his love, but to know that he's a conquering king. That when he comes back, he will judge the world.
This is true about God. And to fear him, that's the beginning of wisdom. That's the beginning of wisdom, for real wisdom. And so there it is. Acts four thirty two through five eleven, we've got a description of the church's common life.
Excuse me. We've got a positive example of that being Barnabas. Let's be a Barnabas to one another. And a negative example being Ananias and Sapphira. And a few application points here to encourage one another church.
And all the more as you see the day approaching, as the scripture would say, to be alert. It really is important that we are aware. To protect the unity and the integrity and the purity of the church, it really is that important. And to fear the Lord. To fear the Lord is a good thing, church.
And don't let anyone tell you otherwise. There is a good, healthy reverence and awe and respect that God deserves. Amen? So with that, I'm gonna invite our worship team, well, a duo today. Some of our worship team got stuck at the airport yesterday and they're traveling back.
So thank you, Seth. Had to be up here not alone. And well and would you stand? And and while you're standing, can I pray? Lord God Almighty, I'm just absolutely amazed by you that you would speak to us through your spirit and through the word.
God, we're taking the whole counts counsel of scripture. The parts we want to hear and the parts, God, that are difficult to hear. God, may your holiness and your might and your power and your sovereignty, God, may we see it, recognize it, be in awe of you. And God, thank you for your church. As we devote ourselves, Lord, to your teaching and to fellowship and sharing meals and prayer like the early church did, God, would you fill us with your spirit and with love and with a real unity and generosity?
And as you taught us to pray, God, would you protect us from the evil one? Anything that would threaten the unity of the church. Yours is the kingdom and the power and the glory forever. Amen. Shall we sing?
