In one paragraph

Pastor Ray preached from Matthew 1 on the Sunday before Christmas, working through the genealogy of Jesus and the account of Joseph's dream. He showed that the line God chose to bring Jesus into the world was full of broken, ordinary people, and that what God asked of Joseph in response was straightforward obedience. The sermon closed with the quiet point that Christmas happened, in part, because...

Read together

  1. Luke 2:9-11 cited as the birth announcement of Jesus to humble shepherds
  2. Matthew 1:1 the book of the genealogy of Jesus Christ, son of David, son of Abraham

Talk about it

  1. Pastor Ray pointed out that Matthew deliberately includes Gentiles and people with troubled pasts in the genealogy of Jesus. What does it mean to you personally that God worked through such an imperfect family line?
  2. When God's word came to Joseph in the dream, he had already thought it through and resolved what he was going to do. Can you think of a time when you had settled on a plan and God redirected you? What made it hard or easy to change course?
  3. Pastor Ray said that Joseph took 'a very, very simple act of obedience' and that we are celebrating Christmas because of it. Do you think obedience in your own life ever feels too small to matter? How does Joseph's story speak to that?
  4. Aaron's baptism was described as an 'immediate and obedient step' following his decision to believe the gospel. What role does that kind of immediate follow-through play in faith, and what can make it difficult?
  5. Pastor Ray said he never wants to lose the wonder of the Christmas story even though it is told every year. What helps you stay genuinely moved by a story you have heard many times, rather than just going through the motions?
